extremely enthusiastic about material and gave GREAT lectures!
vastly overrated. inaccesible/material weak. skimmed over jung; good for yuppies
Ralph isthe most accessible professor I have ever encountered. He is very positive and makes the material totally fun and entertaining! A UCSC experience isn't complete without one of his classes!!!
The most over-rated professor *ever.* Nice guy, but I haven't learned a thing from him.
do not leave school without taking a class from him
Funny, creative, engaging, great overall professor.
Ralph is one of the best professors I've ever had! He has a very engaging, energetic, and captivating teaching style, and his faith in the amazing things his students can do is truly refreshing. Even if you're not a psych major, don't miss out!

Ralph was the most amazing and influential teacher I have ever experienced. He's only over-rated to students who don't put in the effort.

Probably the best teacher I have ever had. I can't put into words how much his classes have done for me on a personal level. I've become a better student in other classes by having him as a teacher.

A very interesting and entertaining teacher. I love how he relates everything to personal experiences. A real down-to-earth kinda guy! One of the best teachers here!
Ralph is quite possibly the best professor on campus. He is so passionate about his subject matter and really enjoys his job to the fullest extent. He is caring and loves to include the 500 or so students he has for a given course. Ralph rocks!
Amazing, inspirational, wonderful speaker. Biased in his teaching, but he makes you forget it in his passion. Most caring professor I've ever had. Wonderful person.
and inspiring teacher. at the end of every lecture everyone applauded.
Very good teacher with a lot of enthusiasm... one of the best teachers ive had in UCSC... it made me realize that some teachers still care about teaching and their students
Ralph was great. Don't miss out.
He is the BEST teacher I've ever had!!! Nobody can miss his class if you are in Santa Cruz even you are not Psych major!!! You will learn and enjoy his class!
Ralph is one of the most amazing human beings I have ever met. He was inspirational and a true diamond in the ruff. He lives life with passion and expresses it to all his students. He not only teaches the material, but you will learn a lot about yourself.
Ralph is a beautiful human being. His lectures aroused applause every single day of class. I wish he was in my family. He is literally and constantly enthused. His lectures are very clear. But he's a bit too easy. He does not ask much from his class
He is an excellent professor with a real passion for what he teaches. The concepts are often very abstract, but he manages to teach them in a way that makes sense without preaching beliefs.
He's my favorite!
dude, wow. i'm takin another one of his classes. that was literally enlightening. (psych/religion class, that is)
inspiring man
good lectures, but the humanistic and psych&religion lectures were mostly exactly the same, same examples, everything. you can do well in these classes from just going to most of the lectures. inspiring man, makes a roomfull of 300 people feel close knit.
his lectures were always so interesting. This professor made you want to come to every single class bc of the enthusiasm he has everytime he starts lecturing. He was able to make a class over 300 feel close. I highly recommend taking any of his classes
I chose to switch majors because of this man. Partly because I want to take every class he offers. He is an inspiration and amazing lecturer!
He's god, if there was one.
Good prof. as noted by others. Clinical is much more intensive and he is much less leniant. Lectures always interesting. You have to do the reading to get by in this class. Tests are much more difficult.
ralph is, without question, the best teacher i've had at ucsc. i plan on taking as many of his classes as possible. he's inspirational and enthusiastic and passionate and wonderful!
one of the greatest teachers i've had here. he makes we WANT to go to lecture, where i actually PAY ATTENTION. he's engaging and approachable, and i learned a lot from his class.
will you father my child??? You are a badass!
Humanistic Psych is a good class to take if you're feeling down/need some inspiration. It made me more passionate about the psych. major. Quinn is a great lecturer, and the readings are incredibly interesting.
he's a really great lecturer...i found the subject not so interesting, however...i still managed to fall asleep often
One of the best professors here at UCSC! The course consists of three quizzes, a paper, and selection participation. He is very good at explaining concepts and is very interested in how students are doing academically and personally.
Reminds me of a horrible motivational speaker. Tried to define people by their place on a one dimensional 'spectrum of functionality'. I don't know about you, but I feel that more things go into a person than can be expressed in a single line.
Ralph is probably the best teacher I've ever had, he is amazing, he is fantastic, I can't express it enough. I want to study humanistic psych in grad school. Everyone I know agrees with me!
Captivating speaker! Very motivating, great personality, just a little unclear at times. Very entertaining class.
I was a little dissapointed in this class. I had heard a lot of hype about Quinn and i guess my expectations were too high. he's really easygoing and fun to talk to, but for someone who encourages his class to not worry about grades he's a tough grader
Ralph Quinn is one of the greatest teachers I have ever had. He his an excellent speaker and professor. You will learn a ton in his classes even though the workload is mild. In my freshman year I would sit in on his lectures for fun! Take Quinn's classes!
i love ralph! he danced for us. psych and religion is the only class i look forward to and the only class where the professor gets applause at the end of each lecture.
this class was way too wacky and easy for me to care at all. Boring!
I love Ralph Quinn! He is quite possibly the best lecturer ever. I really can't say enough good things about him. The guy just radiates positive energy, and he actually cares about his students. I was just blown away by his class, and everyone I know feels the same.
Really great lecturer!!!
Chill teacher, very easy grader, and friendly but didn't learn very much. I was hoping to get a lot more out of the class than I did. He's a really nice guy and very understanding but too much of class was devoted to allowing self-aggrandizing potheads relate their trips to the class.
This has got to be the best teacher at Santa Cruz. He's really nice and a great lecturer
Amazing class, life changing. Makes you think about spirituality in a whole different way. I love Quinn and i miss him now that its over. Believe me, you'll get attached. This class fills up quick (80A).
This class is all fluff and no substance. Quinn is only "life-changing" if you're one of his many crazed fans who would take a bullet for him. Ralph is nice but every class is like a motivational tape. Topics jump from dancing to meditation to energy, but without any legitimate explanation/study.
Quinn's a great guy! I love him and his motivational talks, but I will agree with others, in that I was hoping for less of the inspiration and more of the actual learning. Makes me think twice before taking Humanistic. But, he's a trully wonderful man and one of the funnest classes at UCSC.
On halloween he got up and danced to Sympathy for th Devil, not just for a few seconds but for the ENTIRE SONG, dancing around the media theater and such. He made learning about what could have been very dry materials, quite enganging. Not recomended for Psyc majors who take psyc very seriously.fun.
The hottest man alive. Thrilling, inspiring, wise, has his faults but don't we all? Absolutely real and genuinely involved with each person in the class through mind and words...I wish body. he is awesome!
I had him for Psych and Religion and well as Humanistic. He was phenominal, just such a wonderful teacher. he is open, caring, and just so fun. I was never bored in his class. he inspired my whole life. I would deffinetly recomend him to anyone wanting a truely amazing teaching experience.
P & S was the most dissapointing class that I ever took at UCSC. It was so easy, and instead of learning anything, people just talked about their feelings the whole time. People just like the class because he is a nice guy. The material was good, but the hippie check in was so annoying
Ralph was the best professor I ever had a ucsc. He truly inspired me to go further in psych. He actually cares about his students and it shows. I'm proud to say I'm a Quinnie!!!!!!!!!!
Ralph is amazing! Everyone should take a class with him. I recommend psych and religion.
Taking a seminar with Quinn just kicked ass. He is extremely knowledgable and is able to convey abstract concepts in a clear and concise manner. This class was life changing.
great professor! i learned a lot!
Feels like a discussion, not boring at all. He give you 8 essay questions, four of which will be on final. Amazing lecturer, room always crowded with people both enrolled and not enrolled in the class. Looking back, the material wasn't that interesting, but he made it incredibly fascinating. Best teacher I have had so far at UCSC.
Ralph has some difficulties with keeping appropriate emotional boundaries with students. His classes are of the psychological "touchy-feely" variety, and he's damaged people. A very dynamic lecturer, but watch your back, and psyche.
Very Very Overrated. He's a good motivational speaker, but if you're looking for substance and actual psychological theory, not a good idea. Easy classes, but have nothing for the true psych student.
THE MOST AWESOME INSTRUCTOR EVER!

BEST. TEACHER. EVER.
My favorite class of all at UCSC. Just all around kicked butt. And he is always passes around a petition to create a religious studies department at UCSC, which would be a very good thing.
His classes are not easy, but they are very interesting and he is a great guy.

Moral psych changed my life. Take it (if you can get in...)
amazeing!
The most memorable teacher, very motivational and ever class I wondered what was next. From dressing up like Sigmund Freud, cigar and all, even with the mustache falling off, to the sections located in the caves, to the slides of him climbing to the top of
ralph is awesome. he's super excited about you, the class, you and the class, and the class and you. he wants you to learn and enjoy learning. he really, really wants you to feel as though the material applies to you and will always take the time to tal
The greatest professor on campus, he's a real gem, just fab! So brilliant, so amazing!!!! love him!
Urgh, maybe when I was a freshman I would fall for his crap but b y the time I was a senior I couldn't stand his self-absorption.
i took 3 out of the 4 classes he teaches: clinical, humanistic and psych/ religion... he has a massive following of student groupies lol... a very charismatic teacher who hops around the stage... his material is easy to comprehend and his finals are either in class or take home essays..... his classes are enjoyable! but considers himself some type of guru... i highly recommend taking one of his classes for the amusement of the groupie factor but also his classes are chill
the best psych professor you will ever have!
Though I'm not sure I buy into everything he preaches, it is a very inlightining class and is one of hoes few classes that actually helped me to better myself as a paerson. I recomend this class too everyone.
I heart Ralph!!!
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. His lectures are inspirational. I would reccomend ANYONE taking this class!!
i love ralph quinn. a lot.
Great instuctor. Has the most passion for the subjects he teaches. Makes learning involved. Is there away to add like three more chillie peppers
Most inspirational teacher I've ever had. I've never talked about in class material outside of class as much as I have for this. It's exciting and applies to life. Amazing!
Ralph is by far the most influential and inspirational professor I ever had, and I've been through grad school! If I could I would continue going to his classes even now. Ralph made me anxious to go to class, excited about assignments and always hungry for more. It was the highlight to my college career and one of the things I miss the most.
Ralph is a nice guy and very intersting and VERY charasmatic. Sometimes he can get a little over the top though, but overall it is worth it to take his class. TA's grade everything, though, but the course material wasn't too difficult.
excellent professor ever. i heart him! his lectures are very clear and fun!
he's basically the best teacher i've ever had. his lectures were insightful and interesting, not to mention that he had the most vibrant personality and was super enthusiastic.
He's the best psychology professor I've ever had. His class involved a lot work, but the assignments were so interesting I actually enjoyed myself while doing them. He made every class fun and interesting. He also gave a wonderful talk on the last day of class about graduate school and jobs in psychology. He's awesome!
Hands down best professor at UCSC
Best psych teacher I've had. Lectures and what's expected of you is clear. And he's extremely enthusiatic and passionate about what he teaches.
his classes are truly inspirational and life-changing
I have long since graduated from UCSC and am now a grad student, MFT..I feel blessed to have known him/been taught by his example of kindness
Innovative and enjoyable lecturer who makes you want to go to class everyday. Workload is heavy and writing intensive. Makes you come up with your own theory of personality, treatment plans. A very useful class.
WITHOUT A DOUBT ONE OF THE BEST PROFESSORS ON FACULTY AT UCSC YOU LEARN THING ABOUT YOURSELF YOU NEVER DREAMED OF KNOWING! KNOW YOURSELF AND TAKE HIS CLASS!!
Although it seems that every class is "Storytime with Ralph", he is a well-organized teacher who captivates his students.
Amazingly interesting class, made so mainly by his presence in lecture.
The best professor I have ever had, and one of the best learning experiences too. The world would be a much better place if everybody could take a class from Ralph Quinn.
"Storytme with Ralph" says it. So does "you learn alot about yourself" I came here to learn about psychology, not to be in group therapy! Lecture was often biased but entertaining for sure. Got an A, never read anything.

I am not as obsessed with Ralph as many are, but he is an amazing lecturer, and a joy to listen to. He also "canceled" the final for us, which was awesome.
ralph rocks. class is fun and relaxed. not hard to get a good grade. 10pg paper & a midterm but not very hard stuff. optional section. don't take it if you want history of religion or psychological science stuff. do take it if you want to learn about meditation, wicca, death, and different forms of consciousness. my favorite class of the quarter.
Interesting, fun, easy- take this class!!!
An easy A if u pay any attention at all. Not a good class 4 critical thinkers, tho - every lecture will leave a bad taste in ur mouth. If u take Psych and scientific research seriously, u will be horribly disappointed by this farce. His cult following is ridiculous - this is the kind of class that should be taught in a HS, not at a UC.
He is a genius
Ralph is an amazing professor, my favorite so far in college.
Humanistic was, for the most part, a great class. Ralph is great at inspiring students to live their life at the fullest, which is what 2/3 of this class focuses on. However, the last 1/3 of the class is pretty much BS, focusing on New Age therapies. If staring at a lit vase for an hour helps you, great. If not, just do what makes you feel better.
Quite possibly the best profesor you will ever get the privelage to have. He is so happy and cares so much about his students. SO much wisdom and knowledge to share. Word's can not descibe how amazing he is! He gets standing ovations after most classes!
psyc and religion was a cool class...good stories and wayyy easy. for sure a slacker class, but if that is what you are looking for, take it! also do the readings because class makes more sense and they are good!
Ralph's a wonderful lecturer. That being said- The subject matter of his Psych & Religion class may be considered "controversial" regarding its place in a college psychology department. Granted he fits the archetype of what one might expect from Santa Cruz, HE HAS SPIRIT! I definitely recommend this class, and that you steer clear of Ralph's cult.
What a joke. Students write essays on their personal spiritual journeys! His reputation is built on the fact that he’s very charismatic and very easy. Basically, this is a man that runs class like a self help seminar. It’s inappropriate and frustrating for people that are academically inclined.
You may be entertained, if you like spending your college tuition on watching someone put on a wig and dance/sing along to "sympathy for the devil." The class is poorly organized, devoid of content, and it's impossible to get anything done, especially since his administrative TA is both lazy and computer illiterate. Really, take something else.
ralph really is the****. manages to strike the balance between being chill and commanding respect. what other class do you go to where the vast majority of the class shows up and claps at the end every time? relatively easy if you put it some work but mostly really fun (even if youre not into spirituality)
class is very ambigious, TAs are very incompetent, especially melissa and what is expected of you on the papers was changing every session
Quinn is nice etc. but this class was not the best. Seemed all over the place. Some days attending lecture was vital for passing the class, other days you could have napped. Difficult midterm, study guide somewhat helpful. I had an awesome TA and found sections to be more beneficial. Lots of writing; TAs grade so discuss papers with them.
One of the coolest professors I've had. Has a lot of good messages about life. Its a slacker class though.
This was the best class EVER!! Ralph is the best!! the class is full of life lessons and he is very inspiring if you go to all lectures you will def. learn a lot and pass for sure. Totally recommend this class!!
Do not take this class if you are a cynic. It will be annoying and frustrating and a complete waste of time. However, if you never go to class and just read the material, you'll still get an A.
AMAZING. all you zombies who are forgetting what life could really amount to, he could bring you back to life.
I took Psychology and Religion from Ralph and he is AMAZING. Every time I walked out of class I thought, "Wow, my money is being well spent here." I learned so much and did well. At the end of a lecture, it isn't rare for him to receive a standing ovation. That's how great he is! Take the class!!
If you came to college to just to learn from a text book about stuff that has no value to you in real life, then this is definitely not the class for you. Ralph charesmatically and effectively will open up your mind to new ways of thinking and interpreting the world. Go in with an open mind and you'll come out with a better one.
Best prof ever. favorite class so far.
Ralph's reputation among students is based on his charisma. He will try to convince you in this class that miracles, magic, and spirituality are real forces while winking that maybe we should try be scientific about it. He bases nothing in this class on empirical evidence, but teaches off of his own special spiritual experiences.
He is an awesome teacher! He's really helpful and explains the concepts, ideas, theories, and examples very well. At first, when I took this course, I was expecting the course to be something else. At first I didn't like it very much. But, as the class progressed, I enjoyed it more and more. A MUST TAKE CLASS BEFORE YOU LEAVE UCSC!!!!
Best teacher I've ever seen. You will learn something, guaranteed. One midterm and Final Paper, thats it!
Theres a Cult of Personality surrounding Quinn, but be prepared - this class is a touchy-feely look at religious experiences which, I feel, does not benefit anyone. The last lecture is just one long ego-trip for the professor. Although, its a nice class to do a crossword, or other homework, in if you need time away from home.
Great class. There was a midterm, and a final paper (10-15 pgs), OPTIONAL final. Really interesting class. Didn't go to section. Quinn should definitely be a stand up comedian. I never fell asleep in this class, and never dreaded going. Take this class if you get the chance, highly recommended.
Very interesting Psych & Religion class, Ralph lives up to his reputation of being a fun-loving, charismatic sweetheart. I must say though-- don't expect to come to any conclusions or encounter any controversy in this class. Atheists and skeptics will walk away from this class unfulfilled! (But you should read the assigned books anyway, for fun)
Dont take the class unless you really want to go into clinical. It's not structured well. and the TAs are NOT helpful AT ALL. Sections are mandatory, but useless."Tell the class what animal you feel like today" Ralph is a nice guy. i heard his other classes are great, but this class is very different from the way he teaches the other classes.
Easily the best professor at UCSC.
what a joke of a class. it's basically storytime with ralph quinn/creative writing course. it's a bunch of b.s. and the people that worship him are pathetic & i had to refrain from vomiting all over them each class i did attend...which was not once after the midterm & got an A in the class & on my fake "spiritual journey" paper.
Ralph is by far the most amazing professor on this campus. His tests are straightforward and he's a really nice person. TAKE THIS CLASS
UNCONTESTED! AWESOME TEACHER! HUMANISTIC PSYCH, TOTALLY GREAT. IF YOU DON'T LIKE HIM, LOOSEN UP!
Incredible. If you go to UCSC and don't enroll in at least one of Ralph's classes, I feel sorry for you. He doesn't just make you smarter; he honestly and truly enriches your life. You will grow so much from any of his courses.
Ralph is the most amazing professor I have ever had. He has inspired me more than words can say. Take one of his classes, you definitely wont regret it.
Ralph is probably one of the best professor's I've ever had/will ever have here in UCSC. He's amazing!
i love love love love him! i will probably go to his lectures even though ive already taken the class! worth every penny of my college tuition! totally enhances your life and enriches your thinking :)
Professor Quinn's teaching skills are overrated. Students take his class for an easy A, not to challenge their minds. In subjects that I would be eager to pursue, Professor Quinn dumbs down the material, caters to his need to maintain popularity, and slacks on the standards boasted by high caliber schools such as UCSC.
Extremely enthusiastic about teaching and the subject. He has a lot of experience and love for the subject of Psychology and Religion.
Ralph grew on me. DO NOT miss the lesson on wiccans in the Porter Meadow... one of the best experiences of my life!!! A fun and easy class.
He is the best teacher I have ever had. Quinn is extremely entertaining, you will never be bored in this class. I have friends who are not even in the class wanting to tag along with me to his lectures. He is hilarious, open-minded, & a great teacher not to mention the material is fascinating. I highly suggest this class or any that he is teaching.
Best class ever. I will miss it. The last day of class he surprised us by telling us the final was optional, informed us with great importance of the approach of Global Orgasm Day, and encouraged us to engage in passionate yet tender lovemaking. He also assured us that if we didn't have a partner, it was ok to take matters "into your own hands".
I would not count myself as part of the cult-like following that Ralph has accumulated, but he was a very entertaining and engaging teacher. Gives you midterm questions ahead of time, just memorization, fairly easy A. I would suggest this class.
Are discussion sections mandatory for PSYCH 65 Humanistic Psych??????
waste of time/$$. there was no point in attending lecture (midterm ?'s given ahead of time and answers given in section). i found ralph rather annoying. wika lecture was fun. easy A tho.
Ralph is awesome. He is very entertaining and informative and lectures in such a way that you understand the material, yet are still interested in what he has to say. Go to the lectures take down the key points and vocabulary and you should be ready to rock and roll!
Religion and Psych class was the best thing ever. He is amazing and every class is like a therapy session. Go to class, read, do everything. This class provides so much insight into life, death, and society. He is the best teacher I have ever had and is extremely entertaining. He likes to dress up in costumes.
Ralph is an amazing professor and a wonderful lecturer. He is an engaging story teller and teaches you things relevant to your life. This is the class you really look forward to attending. Take a class with him if you can. He is very helpful and the material is easy to learn if you attend class.
Ralph is an amazing educator and a truly genuine person. The class is very interesting and filled with knowledge that you will want to hold dear the rest of your life. If you have the opportunity to take a class with Ralph, do so! You will not regret it.
Best teacher I have ever had in my entire life.
ralph is the best professor ever. this is the most important and transformative class that you will ever take.
He is a great professor- if you're in high school...or a freshman. I was told this would be the best class I've taken at UCSC and I was sorely disappointed. He is quite overrated and class was barely academic. Ralph told stories all the time. As a philosophy major I was very sorry to have this be my first Psych class.
If you are looking for a fun/easy class, look no further. The tests are heavily off lecture notes and you can BS your final paper and no one will care. Easy A. More of a entertainment class so dont expect this class to have any academic value or you will be disappointed. Take this only when Quinn is teaching. Hes a good guy
Everyone told me this was going to be the most amazing class I've ever taken but I was really disappointed. You could tell that Quinn knows he's the****, and I found his lectures pretentious and showy. No academics needed for the class, everyone gets an A.
Best teacher iv'e had. random dances in class, funny stories, all around great class.
I like to call this lecture "Ralph Quinn's Story Hour" because he loves to tell stories in order to illustrate concepts. Psych&Religion is a really engaging class that I am always excited to attend. Doing the reading is a little time consuming, but definitely important in order to better understand the lectures. Ralph always lets class out early
Best class I have ever taken. Quinn is the bomb and I love the way he teaches. I recommend this class to everyone. His methods are different and I think all classes should be more like this.
Ralph Quinn is one of the most amazing people you will ever meet. If you have the chance, definitely take a class with him. Psychology and Religion was a life-changing experience for many people and it was very enjoyable. If you don't like meditating, dancing, talking about orgasms, or experiencing new things, don't take the class.
Ralph Quinn is incredible. I have recommended this class to everyone I have talked to. Super easy, super interesting. Loved every minute!
Ralph Quinn is one of the most inspirational and motivational teachers EVER! His lectures were always interesting and relative to real-life. I loved the story-telling of his personal experiences, which really related to lectures. Very moving professor. Will definitely take more classes with him in the future!
He rocks.. probably never ever get such a cool professor like him again.. easy as it gets. fun as it gets. iam definitely taking him again for another class. so awesome!
Professor Quinn's Psychology & Religion is a MUST-TAKE course. He is an inspiring and thought-provoking professor. This class was an all-time favorite, and definitely worth taking (even if you're not a psych major)!
Ralph is a top notch professor. His lectures are captivating and this class is amazing. If you are at a tough point in life, this class might help you discover what you really need. 1 midterm and a 10-15 page paper on your spiritual journey. Attend the lecture and you'll do fine.
so amazing!
An inspiration of a human being. If you think Ralph is overrated, you have no soul.
I recently graduated from UCSC. Ralph Quinn is the best professor I had there. I can't recommend him highly enough. I took his class based on recommendations about him with no interest in humanistic psych going in. It honestly changed my life. Don't miss the opportunity.
He is a great prof for undergrad classes. Many students enjoy his classes because he keeps it real. He also relates to the student too. The only downfall is that he has a lot of groupies and it is hard to get a hold of him. Class is very easy to pass.
Don't hate Ralph Quinn for being so modestly impressive. How is it possible not to be awed by an actual Self-Actualized man, who cares so deeply? I would venture that mostly guys, I'm one too, are intimidated and/or jealous since females in class often gaze at him like Professor Indiana Jones in "Raiders". Remember The eyelids painted "LOVE YOU"?
He is the best teacher I have had so far. His class is awesome and he is so passionate! if every teacher was like him i might actually go to class :)
awesome teacher!!!!!! he's hilarious and plays great music :D I can't recommend psych and religion as a GE more than this class.
I've never been so moved by a teacher or a class. Ralph was a fantastic lecturer. He told great stories and made all concepts relatable. If you have an opportunity to take any class with him, do it. It might just change your life...
Ralph Quinn is the most deep, spiritual man that I have met in my entire life. He is the only Professor I have ever encountered that has a genuine and caring compassion for his students, "Greet everyone as if they are the blessed one." He is the shaman of knowledge, the God of our classroom. Team Quinn for life!!! Namaste.
This class, and Ralph, changed my life. Ralph is compassionate, knowledgeable, and full of contagious energy. He made me into a more spiritual person, and a happier person. I am absolutely taking a class from him again. Don't believe the haters - he's an amazing human being and deserves the praise he gets. I wish this class had never ended...
He would be an awesome minister or shaman type, or dad. I'm not sure how much I actually learned in this class about psychology; I'm in psych to learn about others. He is very entertaining. But, hey, maybe that's why we all love him--we get to write and think about ourselves all quarter and get credit for it!!!
There are no adequate words to describe Ralph. Just know he is probably the best psych teacher on campus and his classes are fun and interesting. I love him!
Awesome lecturer. I can go on and on about how interesting and fun he makes his lectures. His Psych and Religion class is a great experience. Will take more of his psych classes in the future. GREAT GUY!
Honestly, it was my first quarter and I didn't read the book after the first week, and still got an A-. If you're an extremely practical person (living on the fast track) you may not like this class. If you have an open mind, he can show you many doors. He is very spiritual and passionate about teaching. Delve into the "Vertical" and have fun!
Definitely one of the best teachers here at UCSC. This class is a MUST take. He will leave you inspired after every class. Wonderful person overall
An amazing lecturer. I would take this class 100 times.
Awesome lecturer!! Honestly didn't do much of the reading and still got a B. He is awesome!
I don't care that Ralph is probably in his 60s. He is hot, engaging, and most of all a wonderful professor. One of the best in UCSC. THANKS Ralph!
Best teacher on campus. You shouldn't graduate without takeing at least one of his classes. Take this one as a W because it actually seems easier then a non W. You write a lot more, but get more direction on what to write. If you are thinking about clinical work this is the class to take.
At first I thought this guy is hyped up by the students but after a few classes what he was saying make some sense. He is clear when lecturing and tell amusing stories. His tests and final essay are easy and won't take up much time to prepare for. All in all, he is quite a character.
THE BEST PROFESSOR !!!
the BEST professor i've ever had and one of the most amazing people i've ever met. to the core, he's genuinely kind and this class will change your life! Definitely recommend it.
I feel sad for those who seem to think Ralph's class was worse nothing because it was 'based on personal spiritual experiences'. This man understands that real teaching and real knowledge is ENTIRELY based on personal experience, and I felt I gained more from this class than any "scientific" class I have EVER taken. He teaches what is truly real.
I know I'm in the minority on this but I was disappointed with the class. I didn't learn anything academic, he told stories but I didn't learn anything. Really easy A. Just a multiple choice midterm and a final essay. Go to class and and you'll get an A
I loved listening to him talk and his stories were amazing. However, I got a 98 on the midterm and ended with a B in the class. My essay was "too creative" for the TAs I guess. Sucks
Amazing teacher. Everyone must take one of his classes before graduating. He's extremely engaging and the class is not difficult: one midterm and an essay in addition to an OPTIONAL final.
Quinn is an awesome guy. He cares for his students and humbles himself, making him easy to connect with. You can tell that he's reached that level of upper awareness and is a perfect role model for humanistic psychologists. However he doesn't teach rigorously, so those looking for a trying and tough education won't get it here. Awesome guy, though
Ralph is the professor, everyone should take a class with him. Most hilarious and genuine professor on this campus. He excepts you to work on your own but he is there to support you along the way.
Ralph is by far one of the most appreciated professors I've ever had here in UC Santa Cruz. He is the one teacher that receives a round of applause at the end of every lecture. And also, the one you feel a great connection with even if you don't approach him. Definitely recommend him. Take my word for it, he is WORTH taking the course.
Ralph is hands down the best teacher I have ever had. He loves his students and it truly shows. The content was extremely interesting, and I would recommend that every single person take this class!!!! I learned so much.
Ralph is a nice enough guy, but for those legitimately interested in the field of psychology: stay away from this class. I am in the minority. The meetings have more in common with a sermon, than a lecture. The core of the course is about transpersonal experiences on the "vertical" plane. Nothing empirical here. Avoid.
RALPH IS AMAZING! My favorite professor so far at UCSC for sure! He is so entertaining, passionate, and knowledgable. There is a decent amount of reading, but so worth it. This class will blow your mind! Take his Humanistic Psych class too!
Ralph is a great teacher, he tries to make everything easy to understand and writes out an outline for each lecture so it is easy to follow.
Ralph makes a strong connection to his students, and easily makes Psych and Religion one of the most entertaining and intriguing courses on campus. With only a midterm, final paper, and non-required section; you really get out of it what you put into it. He challenges you to think about your life... the world could benefit from more like him.
Amazing! This class helps you begin/continue finding yourself. A lot of reading but I only did 1 of the readings and got 100% on the midterm, so yeah. Just pay attention in class and take good notes. Consists of 1 midterm, 1 optional final, and 1 final paper (on your spiritual journey). HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. SERIOUSLY. TAKE IT. RALPH IS AWESOME.
Ralph is the best. You have to take a class with him.
quinn is very lenient. there is no structure. one midterm and a few papers. easy A if you do your work, but you'll definitely pass if you do SOMETHING
Ralph is interesting, entertaining, funny, and knowledgable. I find it really easy to connect and understand his lectures and never feel offended or super confused. I very strongly recommend psych and religion to everyone.
Ralph is a great guy, super caring and loving. His lectures are really interesting! I'd highly recommend this class
Awesome in every possible way
Quinn's lectures are amazing and inspirational. I always leave class feeling more enlightened and it's one of the best classes I've taken. There's one midterm, an optional final and one long essay on your spiritual journey. Not necessary to have the textbook as he does cover most topics in class, but they are good reads.
Great class to take and learn about life and how to open up yourself.
Ralph is amazing. I took Psych 80a my first quarter here, and it was a major part of why I fell in love with UCSC so quickly. I loved it so much that this year I (unofficially) audited the class so I could take it again. Psych & Religion was incredibly informative, has always stuck with me, and in many ways changed my perspective. Thank you Ralph!
taking psych and religion was one of the best decisions i've ever made. perfect way to start my career at ucsc. I did most of the readings, but not super necessary if you attend lecture (trust me you'll want to). I ended with over a 100% in the class, with a decent amount of effort but nothing major. TAKE THIS CLASS, you'll enjoy every minute.
He was my favorite professor of my favorite class for my first quarter in college. I always recommend this class to those who read about it and would definitely take it again if I had to. :)
Quinn was a great professor and when I went to his office hours I could tell he cared about me as a student-he took time to get to know me and help me despite the large class. His lectures are interesting but just note that you're not going to learn much about psychology as much as learn about spirituality and respect. But I had such a great time!
Honestly one of the best class experiences I've had. He's a great guy and an amazing teacher and his positive attitude and quirkiness only add to the amazingness of the class. The class itself is usually pretty easy, as long as you cram before exams and at least skim your reading and take notes during lecture.
You don't have to go to lectures if you do the readings. You don't have to do the readings if you go to the lectures. You have to study for the mid-term, other than that, his final is a creative essay. I'm almost done with the class, will update.
It's a life changing class. If you go with an open mind it will truly shift your views of the world. There are many readings however I found that it is not necessary to read them all(although you should because they're carefully picked by Ralph and they're very interesting). In addition there's 1 midterm and a 10 page paper that counts as the final
He is amazing. seriously recommend this class for any major. Best professor at this university
THIS CLASS IS NOT A GE! IT's a GE from 2010 and they still have these for the students who took a leave of absence. Do not take unless you have to, or you're a spiritual person. I thought it was interesting. Easy if you show up and pay attention. One mid-term, one final essay. You didn't even have to show up to class after the mid-term. He's nice
never had a better professor or teacher. he's amazing and I felt like I had a genuine connection with him even though it was a 400 person lecture hall. everyone needs to take this class just for the experience
He is just so so great. He inspires students and just simply his personality makes you want to come to class '.
Hands down one of the best classes I've had the opportunity to take at UCSC. If you're at all interested in spirituality this class is an absolute treat. Ralph is one of the best professors I've had so far. He starts each lecture asking the class how they are and you can tell he genuinely means it and cares about his students. A must take class
80A is an experience, not a class. I took this class my first quarter as a freshman and it truly made me fall in love with this school (especially after the class led by a wiccan guest leader in the porter meadow). Ralph is a great guy, he truly cares about his students and his lectures make you feel like you're the only person in the room.
Ralph is an amazing professor. He loves what he does and it definitely shows! Would definitely recommend taking his class!
Ralph is an amazing teacher, possibly one of the best I've ever had. Even though I have not met him, I feel like I know him because he is so personable, hilarious, and kind. The class is all lecture, but I rarely, if ever, get bored. You are graded on three things (midterm, final, and 10-12 page paper), but I wouldn't worry about them.
Ralph is a man who is very humorous and humbled. He uses a lot of stories from his life to lead into detailed lectures. He finds ways to engage with students personally despite having a very full class. Always was willing to answer questions after lectures. The readings can sometimes be dense, but you don't have to read them to pass the class.
This class is more of an experience than a class. I took it my first quarter of my freshman year and it was absolutely amazing. I totally would recommend it to a friend.
he's amazing
He has all the traits you can expect from a good professor :)
Incredible class taught by an incredible teacher. 100% recommend this class.
He's so awesome.
Ralph Quinn is the most captivating lecturer I have ever experienced. Not only were his lectures informative but also deeply emotional and inspiring. Quinn is a true gem of a human being, and I'd recommend not only taking his classes but also visiting his office hours, as he's just a true joy to be around.
The best class I have ever taken. He made the final optional and the big end of the year paper was the single most meaningful piece of writing I have ever made. Just an amazing professor, you feel like you are in a philosophy class almost. I have never had a professor that cares for their students as much as Ralph does.
Best class i have ever taken at UCSC. This class is more than just a regular lecture, it's a wonderful experience. The whole class feels like a family and is connected more than any other class. The way professor Quinn lectures is more like telling a story. You can tell he really cares about his students. 10/10 would recommend this course.
Ralph is so sweet and caring, he truly cares about how his students are doing. The lectures are more like a story than an actual lecture, and he allows a lot of freedom for student input and examples. He's more than happy to give advice in and outside of class, and he has a lot of great ideas and perspectives that are often missed in academia.
I took Ralph's class, Theories in Moral Psychology, 20 years ago. I am now a PhD & professor in a different state. I just looked him up out of curiosity, as he was my favorite professor in college. Ralph's class affected my entire life, from how I teach to who I married to the ways I think about my fellow humans. Wow! Thank you, Ralph! 3
Ralph deserves more than 4.5. I can just feel his passion on class. He gave me the force and strength to send me onto my own spiritual path. And know what, Ralph dressed up on class, and took us to the meadow for a group dance!
Prof Quinn's course on the Psychology of Religion was the most intellectually and academically dishonest experience of my educational career. The class does not cover the psychological, sociological or biological origins of religion, features no references to research. Quinn relies heavily on Jung to encourage magical thinking among his students.
Easily one of the best professor I've had at UCSC. I started convincing friends to come sit in on his lectures with me because he was so inspiring and entertaining. Very easy class. Not a traditional psych class, but valuable none the less. Chose my major based on my experience in Psych and Religion. :) 10/10 would recommend
Took this class because of the things I heard about it. I really enjoyed it. What an experience. I only regret not going to all the classes. One of my favorite classes I've taken. I would recommend to everyone before you graduate to take the class and see for yourself.
Ralph Quinn is the sweetest old man alive. He is like who everyone wishes was their ideal grandpa and he cares about all of his students so much. You don't have to go to class, but his lectures are so powerful and amazing you almost feel guilty when you skip. The class isn't hard either and it is easy to get an A. Love this man
Psych and Religion was a great class and it's definitely worth taking. Ralph is amazing, to put it frankly. Easy pass as long as you pay attention to lecture and don't put off the final paper till the night before. Tip: utilize the TAs, sections are optional but they often have good midterm review sessions and study advice.
He's amazing! Recommend everyone take 80A
AMAZING. Bought all the readings and never read them so I finessed myself out of my own money lol, but still got an A. Theres one midterm and the final was a 12 page paper. Lectures are clear and story-like, hes great. Everyone should take this course.
You will undoubtedly love Professor Quinn. Good material covered in class, he teaches in a way that will help make it stick. If you are genuinely interested in the subject, studying will feel just like reading. The only class I have taken where I WANTED to go every session. I might just be a fan of him, but to me this class was unforgettable.
I graduated from UCSC 11 years ago and still think about Ralph and the classes I took with him. He's so genuine, caring and the lectures are truly life changing.
