He seems like a really smart guy who really knows his stuff, but unfortunately is unable to share his knowledge with his students because of his poor teaching. The class is very challenging, and the material very obscure and for more of an upper level class rather than entry. Take him if you want a challenge, otherwise don't.
he is so full of himself and teaches at a 300 level! he expects you to set up a study time in his office at least once a week but even then he pushes you out of his office as fast as he can! DON'T TAKE A CLASS TAUGHT BY HIM!!
The. Worst. Ever. I actualy looked forward to philosophy but this guy has cured me for life. So smart and so desparate to let you know it. Take one of the other philosophy prof's or avoid this class entirely.
Very challenging professor. Knows exactly what hes talking about. You have to work at his class you cant just skate by. You actually have to work for your grade. Very Good Professor
He turns people off to learning & tells his students that they know nothing about anything, without a shred of irony. He doesn't provide helpful or constructive advice. No, this prof. seems only interested in grandstanding his own brilliance. My bf even visited his office and left feeling bad about himself and his academic interests. Bad teacher!
We had lots of reading and only 3 exams. Class was very boring and he rarely discussed what was on the test. I went to his office hours for help only for him to tell me that he didn't believe I had read the material. He wasn't helpful and avoided questions that varied fromm his belief. I do not suggest him to anyone.
This guy should not be teaching; he acts like life should revolve around his views of philosophy. He is not helpful. There only 3 exams, one is the final, and no other points available. Attendance affects your grade. He repeats the same unclear ideas over and over during lecture, and you walk away knowing he was contradicting himself repeatedly!
Most people in my class had to work their asses off to get a good grade. It is vey difficult and not entry level material, but I learned A LOT. If you do ALL the work (and I would strongly encourage going to his office hours, make sure you do the reading before hand) you'll be okay. Keep in mind he is kind of socially awkward, though. Good luck!
Very difficult professor, but his was the only class I actually learned anything in. If you want to do well, make sure you read all the material and go into his office hours. He really is a nice guy, he just doesn't tolerate incompetence.
I liked his class a lot. I never read any of the material and got an A. It's in your best interest to do the study guides and go to class (he gives all the answers in class) and look over the study guides a lot!
This guy is horrible. He assigns ungodly amounts of reading and only gets to talk about a fraction of it, and if your answer on his tests doesn't coincide with his views, its completely wrong. I strongly recommend you DO NOT take this guy. He's lost in his own world of useless theories.
I would not take his class if you can avoid it. There is a lot of reading, the material is very dense and you only know what he is talking about some of the time. Not very helpful either. Just AVOID him!
I am really enjoying this class, the material is kind of difficult but it is interesting as is the reading, he is easy to understand and its also easy to discuss things with him if you are confused
Do not take this guy. He's arrogant and not very open to others' opinions. A little bit to narrow-minded and focused on his own agenda rather than teaching Philosophy objectively. Tests are all essay questions. Even if you give the right answers, he often counts them wrong if they don't agree with his view of the world.
If you want a challenging class that you hate, then I suggest this one. He knows what he's talking about, but the amount of reading material is ridiculous -- way too much to comprehend. Definitely not worth the amount of work you put into the class.
This guy is terrible. Extremely opinionated and the class is very hard to get a good grade in if you don't agree with him. At least 2 hours of homework every class. Avoid whenever possible!
This guy is terrible. Extremely opinionated and the class is very hard to get a good grade in if you don't agree with him. At least 2 hours of homework every class. Avoid whenever possible!
I thought he was challenging and equally (if not more) helpful. Alot of reading but if you show up for class he explains the points, especially the ones pertaining to the exam. The material is facinating and obsure.
Tests are hard
There is a TON of reading involved in this class, but he goes over most of the important things you'll need in class. The tests are 5 short answer and 1 essay. Those that say you have to agree with him to pass are wrong. He doesn't care what your view is, but you have to logically support it, and you have to understand other philosopher's views.
Thick and obscure material but you could never read anything and just listen to the lectures for the answers. Must take notes! Very helpful for developing analytical skills.
The class is hard. You will have to read A LOT (20+ pages a day). He gives 3 tests worth 50 points. 5 short ans. worth 5 pts each and an essay worth 25. If you pay attention in class the essay is a breeze, and if you read or have good internet surfing skills the short answer ?s come straight from the study guides he gives out. Good Class
Did the reading, participated in class, and studied. I was able to secure the grade I needed in this class. Philosophy is what I know and love, but Shain wasn't interested in the philosophies of anyone but himself. Agreeable? I disagree. I recommend someone else if you are interested in a forum of open discussion and debate.
Shain does not give much guidanc and is definitely not open to discussion. It is early in the semester but I can already tell he has his mind made up and is shutting out anything but his own opinion. I have tried staying after class but he always seems to try to end the conversation quickly with no real discussion. Definitely Not a good PHI teacher
Terrible class. Extremely hard. You read entire books within three or four class periods and he only skims over most material and goes into detail about two or three points. I recommend taking a different professor if you want to take this class. Nice guy. Awful teacher.
There are rarely CLASS discussions, and sometimes you read 50+ page chapters about things that you wouldn't relate to philosophy. All of the short answer questions on the exams come from the study guides he gives over blackboard. My advice: do them. And get a study group. His exams are HARD. Half the class will fail the first one.
This class is just an annoyance, if anything. He's not a very good teacher and will get off topic all the time. My advice is to just read the text and answer the questions on the study guide; those go right on the test, word for word. If you study from the study guide, you'll be fine. I usually just bull on the essays, but still get a good grade
I have taken several classes from Shain, and gotten A's and B's. As long as you read everything and pay attention to the sections he finds important, you will do well. He is difficult to understand at fist, but you get used to it. Take good notes. Study your notes. Justify your opinions. Speak up in class. Do the readings. GO TO CLASS!
Very hard class, first test I thought I knew the material and got a D. But Shain does have some interesting points, and you do learn a lot. There is some class discussion, but not much. Attendance is mandatory.
Very, very intelligent professor. Go to class, listen, read assignments. Office hours/after class is time that is opportune for getting help. Those who aren't familiar with a philosophy class will complain that his course is ridiculous, but how does one learn without being challenged?
Horrible. He doesn't teach the class with an into to philosophy book like every other professor for this class. I know nothing about philosophy after taking this. Doesn't even try to explain any of the reading or teach us anything about how its philosophy. Does not teach it as a 100 level course, more like a 300 or 400 level. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
I would recommend Professor Shain to any philosophy major. Sure there is some anxiety over grades, but he is fair with students and a talented philosopher to boot. It is a shame that his reviews are so negative, though I think this is due to the number of which comment on his 100 level classes.
If you have a philosophical viewpoint prior to this class, you'd better hope it matches up with his. Unkind to views other than his own. If you're comfortable enough to talk with outside of class, he's a great board to bounce your ideas off of and he will challenge you to defend your point, but he will never concede that you may be right.
Hard class, you will be challenged. While he won't accept ideas that are different than his, he's fair and won't dock your grade for it. Go to class, listen, and take detailed notes, otherwise you won't make it.
He is always willing to talking to you if you are having difficulty with the material, which is to be expected because not all philosophy is upfront. Tests are fair and he gives a study guide so you know what to expect. Read the material and go to class; it's college, so don't gripe about it.
The reading is extremely thick and demanding and only a few points are talked about in class, some of the reading was skipped over completely. Class was just one giant argument.
Shain only talked about a few points in class and also did not take criticism well. Made everyone feel like they were stupid and did not have good hours. Also would not reply to emails or post grades to blackboard. He has a quiz once a week and tests follow study guides. MEMORIZE THE STUDY GUIDES and definitely create a study group!
The readings are hard but if you want a good grade you must do them. He goes over most of it in class which helps clarify it. He gives study guides for the quizzes and tests and some of the time tells you the questions that will be on the quizzes. Lectures can be pretty boring and definitely challenging however he is always willing to help.
He is an extremely difficult teacher. He doesn't discuss much that will be on your quizzes and exams. He also is not very willing to help outside of class. I read and studied for dozens of hours and still failed. He teaches the class like a 300 or 400 class, makes the class much more difficult than a 100 level should be.
Very bad professor for intro level, grades hard, tests were short answer and essay. Would not recommend.
Dr. Shain is an amazing professor. If you're just looking to get through the class, get your grade, and get over it, you're really missing out on the valuable education you can receive from him. Yes, there is a lot of reading, but if you're not reading, you're not learning! I can tangibly feel how much smarter I've grown from taking his class!
He is the worst professor to take. He teaches the class like he is teaching it to honors classes. I had no idea what he was talking about most of the time and he isn't very helpful. He makes you feel stupid when you want to know something and his test are so hard. I thought I knew everything and completely bombed the test. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS
Speaking as a middle-aged science major who's graduating with top honors, I can say unequivocally that this was one of the two most valuable classes I've had in college (the other being public speaking). This is a hard class with complex readings, but if you truly want to develop your critical thinking ability, take this class with Dr. Shain.
The most difficult class I've taken in college. Lectures droned on forever and were incredibly hard take in. He taught his opinion and tended to ignorebelittle opposing ideas. I love philosophy and this class was awful.
The tests are extremely hard all short answer and you almost have to go meet with him during his office hours to get a full understanding of what he wants. He provides study questions for each reading assignment, but doesn't always answer them in the class discussion.
He requires you to read a lot of tough readings that are super hard to understand and when you ask him specific questions about the readings he never actually answers questions. Your grade is all test based, so if you fail one exam then it's extremely hard to pull your grade. The exams are also all short answer and essay questions.
Would not recommend taking him.. Hardest class I have had so far. Tests are extremely difficult, he's not helpful. Over half the class dropped at mid-terms. Only 4 tests which consists of your whole grade for the semester. Also, extremely strict in the classroom.
HORRIBLE CLASS. This class was so hard for me. I studied and read all of the materials and even did all of the study questions. Never passed a single test. I had to drop the class at midterms. Grades only come from 4 short answeressay exams. Makes you feel stupid every time you ask a question about something you don't understand.
I read reviews on Rate my professor and he sounded challenging. There are 4 tests the entire semester and I was congratulated on the first one for the grade I received (it was a D). Tests are difficult and he taught nothing in class. Attendance is mandatory even though I never learned anything from the lectures. Refuses to answer many questions.
Most difficult professor I've ever experienced.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND. Maybe he is a bit difficult for a first semester, but don't miss out on this brilliant man based on a few angry freshmen! He truly loves what he teaches, and is really nice and helpful if given a chance. Yes, for 300-lvl, the class is somewhat more demanding, but with effort an A is feasible--and you will learn MUCH along the way!
Lectures are unclear ramblings that may or may not be helpful on the exam. Go ahead and get the reading list ahead of time and begin prior to the beginning of the semester. That's the only way you'll ever get through it. Doesn't really answer questions clearly. Take another class if you can - bottom line.
You get 4 grades in the class: the 4 exams. And each exam is nothing but short answer questions, however they come straight off of the worksheets he gives you. If you don't like reading, don't take him because that's all the class is. What he doesn't tell you though, is at the end of the semester he ups your grade if you had good attendance.
Worst professor I've ever taken! Is not helpful at all, and expects way too much from students. The tests are very hard, and doing the readings is expected even if you don't understand what you read. Avoid taking, if possible!
The readings are difficult, but it was one of the most rewarding classes I've taken. Dr. Shain is quite an interesting fellow (in a good way), and I certainly hope to learn from him again when he returns. An "A" is manageable, but you will have to read quite a bit. Don't expect the lectures to be enough.
Man he is a tough professor, but his lectures are very interesting and engaging! If you need any help, he will do whatever he can. My grade was slipping and I went to his office hours, which helped a lot and pulled my grade up in the end. Fantastic guy who really cares and wants his students to succeed, but he WILL make you work for it!
He is terrible. Very rude and lectures make no sense most of the time.
His tests consist of 5-8 short answer questions and an essay(s). He is a VERY tough grader. During class discussions he encourages participation. However, he is VERY vast when asking questions for answers that when you do try to answer that is when he gets specific about how he wants you to answer. 2 of 3 right answers is a pass on his 18 quizzes.
Dr. Shain is awesome. He's gives engaging lectures and is very willing to explain things if you don't understand them. He did have us read some bizarre stuff, but I went to his office hours before the last two tests, and did well. He is a little strange (but aren't we all?), but he has a kind heart. Just respect him and he'll respect you.
Shain is by far the worst professor I have experienced. Instead of a book, Shain requires you print reading materials. We printed 50+ pages in the first two weeks. Further, his lectures are incoherent and often follow no pattern, leaving students guessing what was important. He grades this class with only 3 exams and a paper.
If you enjoy intellectually challenging work, this is a great course. Three tests, two papers. He gets off topic easily but is incredibly knowledgeable. Very open to questions in class if you are confused. If you pay attention in class but don't read much of the text, you'll get a B. You MUST read the text in order to get an A in the class.
Warning. This class is ROUGH. Shain teaching this class was impossible to understand ( if you are a student who isn't majoring in philosophy). He would assign huge readings every week that are more hard to interpret than the bible. I dropped out before the second exam because he gave us 15+ study papers with answers he doesn't give. Only 4 tests.
Unless you know a lot about Philosophy or are super into the subject, I wouldn't take this professor. He does not post grades on black board and makes you read A LOT, stuff that doesn't make sense. His lectures are unorganized and its hard to take notes. He doesn't have guidelines or a power point so attend class and take good notes.
He comes into class and he rambles; it is tough to understand what is important and what is not important. The class started with over 30 people and is ending with about 10. He gives study questions to help and the study questions he gives are on the test. But the problem is, he gives over 50 study questions and 5 are on the test. Terrible teacher.
Shain is a good professor, but his class is extremely tough. Your entire grade is based off 4 tests and if you plan on skipping class, think again. He takes attendance, but more importantly, if you skip a class you will miss so much information that it will be almost impossible to catch up. Be ready to read and take good notes in order to pass.
If you enjoy being made to feel stupid you will love this class. Class participation is encouraged but if you ask a question he will make you feel stupid for asking it. Terrible teacher, opposed to everything modern. Does not care about anything else you may have going on in your life because he only wants you to read philosophy outside of class.
The WORST professor I've had at MO State.
His lectures don't make sense, and his tests are based off of the study guide he gives you. He asks you questions, but doesn't explain them in a reasonable way that could make sense.
All we do in class is listen to him talk about stuff that no one actually cares about. He never answers your questions directly which makes it seem like he actually has no idea how to answer any question thrown at him. He is very antimodern which conflicts with almost all of his students. Never tells you when to read for the next class period.
I quite enjoy his class. Although his class is quite tough and very rigorous for a 110 course. This being said I found his lectures to be for the most part engaging and quite informative. His class really make you work for the grade you get but at the end of the day, it is well worth the effort put in. I am finding his class quite eye-opening.
This is the worst class I've ever taken. He lectures from beginning to end and has no idea how to organize his thoughts so taking notes in impossible. He doesn't know how to answer your questions and intentionally makes you feel stupid when you have one. I am a straight A student and failing this class. I will be dropping, it's 100% not worth it.
I WOULD NOT recommend this class to ANYONE! The whole 1 hr 15 minutes all he does is lecture in no specific order. When you ask a question he never knows how to answer it or he makes you feel like a complete idiot. ALSO when you raise your hand to ask a question he tries to act like he doesn't see it. You can spend HOURS! studying and still fail.
Shain does his best to make the lecture interesting but if you didn't do the reading (or at least bring it to class) you'll be lost because the lecture is entirely based on the readings. Lecture notes are also not posted anywhere so coming to class is important. Tests are always short answer and essay questions so studying for exams is a must.
Highly suggest not taking this professor's class. He tries to make lectures interesting but fails. Probably one of the worst professors I have ever had. Clearly knows the material, but can't explain it properly so students will understand. Dropped the class with like a 26%, and so did about 3/4th of students in the class.
This class is very boring. Shain explains things well but gets off topic very easily. The test arent too bad and he gives you the questions on the test.
Know everything on the study guide; take vigorous notes and use google. The assigned readings are very complex. There are a few essays and tests. An upper B is considered an A. Attendance makes understanding material easier. Unexpectedly a funny guy. He takes the time to try to answer questions. He never forces participation. Long lectures.
The philosophy class I took with Dr. Shain was very difficult, but if you're willing to show up to class and at least read the materials once you'll get an A! Just don't take his class if you're looking for a blowoff class. His office hours are soooo useful, take advantage of them! He wants to see you succeed!
What a legend
If you want an easy blow off class, this is not it. If you want to study your butt off and feel rewarded at the end of the semester by passing one of the hardest classes you will ever take, this is it. Grade is based off of 4 exams and the study guides are crazy long. If you go to his office hours he will help you. This is my hardest gen ed.
If you have high test anxiety, have trouble taking notes, or have trouble paying attention in class try a different teacher. You have 4 exams that make up 100% of your grade, but they're easily passable if you read the material, pay attention in class, and engage in learning and the study guide. As a teacher, Shain does a fine job at conveying info
DO NOT TAKE HIM!! when you try to ask questions in class he makes you feel stupid. while he does have knowledge of philosophy, he does not explain the information well.
A few notes for Prof Shain: 1. Do the readings and bring your study guide to class; the lectures are hard to follow unless you know exactly what he wants you to know for the test 2. He can be condescending when you ask questions 3. Attendance is mandatory and is vital to your grade 4. His lectures are very, very hard to pay attention to Good luck
Ralph is an interesting guy. His class is pretty difficult and DO THE READING!!!! It makes lecture a lot easier, but his lectures are still very thorough. If you want to learn philosophy and are willing to put in the effort, you can get an A. I highly recommend doing all the readings and starting the study guide a week in advance.
This philosophy TEACHER thinks, for some reason, that he himself is a philosopher. He is not. He is a pretty condescending guy and really enjoys playing word games, which is his idea of philosophy. If you actually are interested in philosophy I wouldn't take his class. If you want an easy pass, I wouldn't take his class. In general, I wouldn't.
I had this prof fall 2020 for a blended/online class. There were only 8 graded assignments the whole semester, all essays dependant on listening to long, rambling recorded lectures and heavy reading. Attendance was not mandatory due to covid-19, but attending in-person lectures was the only opportunity for feedback. Prof does not answer emails.
Not only is his grading style set up for failure, his assignments are as well. He posts the lectures AFTER the assignments are due on purpose & the lectures are what helps you make sense of the readings. I have reached out to him for help & he barely helps or responds. If you don't interpret the readings the same way as him you get graded poorly.
Trust me, you do not want to take this class. There were only around 10 of us to start with and Im pretty sure that there might just be about 5 of us left. I regret taking this course.
There is no point in trying for this class. Is studied more for this class than I did for my major classes. You can do the readings and study guides and still fail the test after studying for a week straight. TRUST ME DO NOT TAKE!!!
Once you get thru the quizzes or whatever your grade is solidly based on tests that are 5 short answer and 1 essay question. You can do the study guides and everything studying for days on end and you will only pass if you can actually understand the philosophy somehow. No zoom available for the class but zoom is available to meet about class work.
This professor wants to hear exactly what he thinks is correct or else you are just dead wrong. He is unhelpful when you email him and really just doesn't care about how awful his class is set up. Exams are 5 questions, which sounds easy enough right? Wrong. They are short answer and have to be written EXACTLY as he wants to you get a 0.
If you get part of the question wrong on the test you get a zero. There aren't many assignments. Most of your grade depends on your test. You have about 4 quizzes and 3 tests and a final exam. Not much way to get points for this class.
Difficult to work with. Graded on three exams and few quizzes at the beginning of the semester. If he doesn't like wording, you will get zero points. Never failed a class before but looks like I will have to drop the class or get an F. Provides a study guide with overwhelming amount of questions (most of which will not be on the exams).
Taking this class and coming away from it with a passing grade or higher is the truest test of a student. This was by far the hardest class I have ever taken in my life. I got a B in the class through sheer force of strength and determination. If you take this class and do well, that success will remind you of how much of an academic weapon you are
Dr. Ralph Shain is God's gift to education.
tbh I'm only a month into the semester and I have absolutely no idea how I'm going to pass this class. walked into it having no clue what type of professor was and I'm a little terrified about my gpa. good luck
I had to withdraw from class because the lectures were so bad and the quizzes were too difficult. No visual aspect, just verbal lecture. Mulitple different textbooks, hard to figure out what to read. Extremely monotone/boring class.
he is the worst teacher ive ever had. he doesn't care about his students and only cares about his own opinions. It would be a mistake signing up to take his class
This class is lecture and reading heavy. His perimeters for the exam are astronomical. His “study guides” consist of 50 short answer questions, of which only 5 will actually be on the exam. Also, there are 3 essay questions, of which only 2 will be on exam, but must have an outline prepared to answer 1 of the 2??? GOOD LUCKKKK FOR REAL!
This class is a real challenge, but unstuck ai can be a game-changer for study prep. The tests are tough, so stay on top of the readings and use all available resources.
Always attend lectures and take exact notes about everything said (examples from lectures go to quizzes). He's a very particular grader, so things like lack of specificity may cost points. Always read the material (I recommend watching YT videos in conjunction with lectures and readings). He's very knowledgeable/ willing to discuss with students.
It is possible to succeed in this class. if you love reading for hours on end, do not need to be taught by a teacher, and enjoy figuring stuff out individually. Philosophy in itself is already complex and this guy does not make it any easier. I would not recommend taking PHI101 with him, but if you want a challenge, to each their own.
Super lecture heavy and he doesn't put any grades on brighspace so good luck figuring out your grade. Hard grader and if you don't have the answers he is looking for you won't do good on the tests. In my experience he is not very kind or helpful when you meet with him. Interesting class but horrible teacher. Would not recommend this class.
The worst class I think I have taken at MSU. Do the readings or you will have no idea what is going on, and even then, good luck. ChatGPT didn't even know what was happening. Lectures are just a 75-minute ranting session with no visual aides and barely any engagement. The exams are graded based on if he agrees with your philosophy or not. Avoid!
