caring
really wants you to understand
Very hard, go to a different school to take A&P!!!!!!

Go to TCC to take A&P
Very challenging, great for med school preparation!
You'll come out with a lot of knowledge. He really wants you to comprehend the material and how it all interacts--and that makes it really hard. It is a good preparation, but don't plan too many other tough classes in the same semester(s).

Amazing teacher - you will learn so much in this class, but you will have to work for an A.
Plan on learning the material on your own. Lectures are not only confusing but contradictory from day to day. You will have to work very hard to earn an A.
His lecture and his test are very very hard. don't expect to get above a 50 on most of them. he usually gives about a 30 point curve so it works out. second semester is harder than the first. His class is passable.
Class is very hard, his lectures and reading are completely different..if your not in a "study group" you will get screwed no matter what kind of grades you make..Take A&P at TCC..i wish i had
Very hard class, but if you are willing to study a lot you can at least pass with a B. He is very blunt and to the point and doesn't sympathize with students but is willing to help people who are working hard.
VERY hard class, if you take it during the summer plan on not having a life. He expects you to know 4 weeks worth of info in 1 week and it doesn't seem to help much to over-study cause what you spend so much time learning isn't usually even on the test.
Great teacher! Try to get to know him outside of the lecture hall. He's really not that intimidating.
Difficult, but makes you ready for grad school. Will help you as much as you want to help yourself. Great at making his students grow up.
He has to make his points his way and you have to understand it the way he wants..I suggest the best way to deal with this class is to take a tape recorder in class and read every day for 45 min..
Doesnt talk about anything anatomy related in class, only politics and how much the bookstore is ripping us off. they dont teach in labs, you teach yourself this class- and its VERY VERY HARD!
This class is HARD!!! If you need take Anantomy and Physiology, don't take it here. His tests are extremely difficult, some tests worth up to 300 points. Don't ever expect to score more than a 50 on any test. Quizzes every saturday. Just don't do it.
Everyone that writes in here that Dr. Stevens class is too hard and he is not fair, is well, just LAZY.....Grow up, study, spend more than 5 minutes reading and quit complaining...Good Work Dr. Stevens....I guess I'll get back to my 7th hour of studying..
i did not like this teacher at all. He was mean and tries to embarass the students.
If you are 100% & positively sure you are ready for a challenge in any medical profession then take his course. He is very well knowledgable and will challenge you. All tests are fort knox hard. Take both in the summer and get it over with. Serious inquiries only. Experience the pain it's fun.
wake up call to anyone who thinks they are gonna skate through ODU. Not an easy class at all. DO NOT take unless you have lots of extra time to study and spend in lab. Its passable, with work, lots of work.
Awesome!!! Dr. Stevens' has an obvious enthusiasm for what he does and genuinely wants his students to UNDERSTAND the material and how it's all interconnected- not just memorize it long enough to take a test. Yes, it's TOUGH, but it prepares you for what's to come- med/nurs/PT. THANKS DR STEVENS!!!
All I have to say is that those people who are like "Aww he is a good teacher,I'll get back to studying, get off your lazy butts, etc" You are one goody goody. Dr. Stevens is very hard and challenging, yes,he is very smart and knows his stuff but he does not teach the subject well. Go to TCC!
THIS CLASS IS HARD! yet with a little bit of effort you can pass with a C. he curves all his tests and you do in class questions which can help your grade out too. he answers all questions beyond expectations and makes his students critically think. THOSE WHO SPEND7 HOURS STUDYING BETTER HAVE AN A!
Ahhh! Ever had a teacher that's dyslexic AND ADD? Take Anatomy and Physiology if you wanna know what it's like...but you don't, trust me.
Anyone whining and complaining about Dr. Stevens' class isn't cut out for the medical profession. If you can't make it through, you better stick to basket weaving. Yes, it's HARD! Get over it and stop ecpecting life to be easy!
This class is very hard, but it was such a good experience. You will be surprised at how much you learn. My advice: take it over the summer. It's only 2 months, and he's very helpful. Lab is fun. Tough it out, you can do it!
Taught me a lot just hard to follow at times, he jumps all over the place. Good to have a study group, he really pushes that
You will never get an A on one of his tests and the final is over 4 hours long.

Very knowledgeable..but very arrogant. If you can handle his ego, then you shouldn't be going into a profession filled with individuals with "god" complexes..
Got an A in both I and II. Right now in chiropractic school. Helped big time..The secret to getting A's in Stevens class is to bust your a** in lab and get as close to 100 as possible. When doing the phatho/phys books, kick butt on those.
He has such are large curve at the end of the semester that you have to be pretty dumb to not pass that class, I got an A both semester and put very little effort into the class, his test are all multiple choice, you can't get anything easier than that.
Loved the class....but unclear in some details
Took it during the summer and it was hard as h***, but I actually enjoyed it. I got pretty good grades, but hated that d*** microphone. Overall a pretty good class in the summer, but I heard it sucks to take it any other time.
he's a jerk but knows his stuff. he's hard as hell, even when you DO study for 5+ hours a day. and to those who call those of us complaining 'lazy', maybe we just learn differently than you, so back the hell off
Stevens is an awesome teacher. Confusing at times but he'll try his best to better explain himself to you if you still don't understand. He's definitely hard but take his advise and join/form a study group! That's what saved my butt in his class! He knows his stuff and he puts it all into format in which you can understand it... even if he may have wanted to strangle me a couple times, I loved his class!

he sucks. if you ask for help, he'll ask you a bunch of hard questions to get you to think. he has good intentions of making you a better student. if your not familiar with a bunch of medical terms, youll have a hard time. not a good teacher.
Don't think that you can skate by in his class, you'll drown. You will learn a lot though

This was the WORST CLASS EVER in my life! Biggest waste of time and money...forget about taking the class here and take it at a Community College or elswhere where you can actually learn...forget this. I[m serious..I'm warning you...some people may "love" Dr. Stevens..well you obviously don't know what "love" is..
I had him for A&P and Dev. Bio.... he's hard and very demanding; but you learn in his class. if you wanting to go to med school you're only prepared for it, if you take his class.... do the work, read the material and study and you will be fine.
i hate this man with a passion. he ruined freshman year. i dont like the way he teaches as he never really teaches anything just embarrasses and puts other people down the whole time. he relaly doesn't care about anything. and i dont like the people who LOVE him, how can you love him when all he does is swear at eight in the morning!give me a break
He's okay
LOVE him. very INTERESTING. His way of teaching is unusual. He is very HELPFUL. His tests are very hard, but he realizes this and curves. if you want to know the subject, take his class.
Hate to tell you kids that decide to go the easy route and take it at a community college, you won't learn a thing. I did that, and I'm taking it with Stevens, and I've learned so much more! If you want the A, go to TCC, but if you want to pass your MCAT, suck it and up and actually open a book and LEARN, not memorize.
Stevens is very informative and intimidating. I went to his office hours and he made me cluster EVERYTHING that begins with the letter G. I have no idea what that was for.My advice is to talk to him as often as possible because he will boost your grade if he sees that you are trying in his class. STUDY FOR HIS TEST! The final exam is 460 questions.
He knows his stuff. He's a good teacher if you don't mind the rants and yelling. I feel I could have learned more if he had stopped cursing at everyone and got to the point. His tests are hard as hell, but he adds like 20+ points to each one so the class can pass. I might not like him, but I did learn a lot from him
Hands down the hardest class that I ever took. He doesn't really go by the lectures, nor the book. You have to both study the book and outside sources. All his tests are real hard, but he gives a big curve. I never got higher than a 55 on his tests and got a B. Form study groups, we meet 4 times a week for two hours, and cluster EVERYTHING!!
You will work hard but he is the besr prof. ever
worst class ever....but you can't skip becuse of clicker points. biggest a**hole i have ever met
Hey students! if you are planning for med-school, nursing or any post-grad! it's time to take his class. I stdied everyday, formulated a study group(effective), attended weekend labs and lectures, never missed his class, still ended up with B!Try to learn u'r study pattern&skills. He is WITTY! use him as u'r mentor, do well in his class. I miss him
This class is very hard. I feel as though he teach like we should already have the material down pact. Most of the students that understands with ease are already in the medical field or have relatives that are. He always try to make you think and loves joking(half the class is wasted) I wouldn't take this class with a bunch of other hard classes.
hate it all. do not take it with him!!!
i love dr stevens...study hard and ask him for help if you dont understand...he will be your best friend if you try hard and work your a** off, if you are a slacker he will be your worst enemy
After taking Dr. Stevens class I have a new respect for doctors and the medical profession. Dr. Stevens is not hard; the material that has to be covered is detailed as the function of the body. Go to lab, use a study group (I don't learn well this way!) and let him know if you need extra help!! and Julia is wonderful in lab, very helpful!!
I hated it at first! but once I got the hang of things and understood his expectations it wasn't that bad.if you're going into any graduate studies in the health field YOU NEED TO TAKE HIM. He knows his stuff-maybe more than he should! It is a lot of hard material to grasp, but read the book(s),cluster, and ask questions. p.s- julia is a good lab TA!
i took this class my freshman year and it was hard. i did better in the first part than i did in the second half but that is becuase i didnt put all my effort into this class. i would not suggest taking chemistry and anatomy at the same time if you would like to get A's in both classes. if i would have put the time in that is needed for this cla
stay away... u get a less than a B in his class and u cant get into med school... its better that u take it in your senior year or take it at william and mary over the summer as a nondegree seeking student.. that way u dont take community college course and u avoid stevens... then get into med school with mcat and 3.8+ gpa
Dr. Stevens can be very intimidating, but he is really a nice guy. You will do terrible on the tests (the average was usually between 45-50), but he curves so that you will get 2-3 letter grades higher than your original score. It really helps to have taken other biology or biochem classes before taking this class because some subjects repeat.
I had him for 250 and 251. I hated his class while I was in it, but now that I am in nursing school I am soooo grateful for everything he taught us. I am way ahead of most people in the class in terms of knowledge about diseases and everything. He is incredibly hard, but the information that you walk out with makes this class worth all the trouble.
if you go to class and get to know him a little bit he will help you out. i did terrible on all the lecture exams but kicked butt in the labs. that's the only reason i got an A.
Dr. Stevens classes are hard, but you learn so much, and know you will be ready for any career in the medical field! Dr. Stevens knows so much, and will explain anything, if you ask! He really cares that students understand the information and also know how to relate it to real life.
Hardest class I've ever taken! Take it over the summer...you do not want to balance A&P with 3-4 other courses. Dr. Stevens is incredibly intelligent and he may seem intimidating, but he will bend over backwards to help you if you make an effort. Talk to him if you're struggling, I can't stress that enough! Oh..and form a study group. I wish I had!
If u plan on taking developmental...start reading and clustering info at least 6 months in advance. You will put all other classes on the back burner otherwise. Be prepared to live in the lab but he keeps it interesting and pushes you especially in this class because there maybe 20-25 students. Go to class and do not slack!
I highly recommend taking this class if you want to pursue anything in the medical field. I am rating it now - almost 8 years after taking it because I am in grad school (for PA). I only wish I had gotten a better grade, but he really does know how to prepare you for med school and the like. You will get a better education from ODU than you think.
The course is fantastic. Dr. Stevens is not the problem; he's a teddy bear. The problem is his students- those who aren't smart and don't desire to become so- the students who complain, skip classes, earn poor grades, and then write scathing reviews of a phenomenally dedicated professor. Come on guys, you're supposed to grow up a little in college.
I love this teacher. He is dedicated to the success of his student. I was pregnant when taking his class and I felt no discrimination. I would like to take him again bec. I learn so much from the discussion.
Get a study group ASAP! Take the learning assessment exam and do what it says. I wish I would have taken him before my junior year.
it is a real hard class, but he is an amazing teacher.
Very hard class but, he is a great teacher! I recommend that you get a study group, and attend every class. Make sure you read all the notes and the chapters. you will learn a lot in this class, you will never find someone else to teach it as well as he does!
Very hard but that is mostly the material that is being taught
If u want a true feel of a medical school, take this class. He is an extremly smart man. I went to other classes and fell asleep b/c teacher just talks. Dr. Stevens is the kind of teacher that will interact with his students. He makes you think out the box and makes you use ur knowledge. Hard now, but you'll appreciate it later. great advisor too.
Well, his class is hard, but not impossible. It just takes a lot of work. Get in a study group on the first day. Start studying for the exams at least two weeks before each one. Don't panic if you see a 45 as your 1st exam grade, he curves at least 30 points. Also, read the required chapters before going to lecture, it helps!
Read the material before class and it won't be so bad. I got an A+ but I did alot of reading. Do internet searches for simple explanations of complex material covered in this course. Good Luck! Test questions don't always have a correct answer. REVISE YOUR TESTBANK PLEASE DOC!!
An asset to the community college that is ODU. One of the best professors I have ever had in my academic career. Makes me actually feel like I learned something and did not waste my money being spoon-fed concepts that I could have learned anywhere. Keep doing what you do Dr. Stevens. You are the A&P messiah! A++++++++++++++
weird... Dr. Steven's presentations are very informative and interesting. Dr. Steven's ,probably, does not have the best teaching style, but I got very valuable experience out of this class.
Not a wise choice for non-majors with no prior biology or chemistry coursework.
This class is hard and requires 100% of ur time. I'm Not kidding! If you can avoid Dr. Stevens, please do. Especially if you have more than one class. He's too smart for his own good and you need to read the entire chapter before he starts it in lecture, in the anatomy and pathophysiology book. You'll be lost otherwise. Tests r HARD!
avoid this class he is impossible to please and no matter how hard to study or how much you read you will never even be close to knowing what he wants you to know and the tests suck learn grammar and spelling!
Dr. stevens is an amazing teacher. He is really difficult and I recommend reading everything plus doing internet research on important topics. I know that I will succeed in gross anatomy for PT school because of him.
Dr. Stevens is the worst teacher I have ever had!! His lectures are way over the top and you cant follow anything he is saying. Labs are basically you go and study and figure it out on your own. It is possible to get a C though. Do all the quizzes and get as many clicker points as you can. His tests are crazy hard and its basically a guessing game.
I have no words to describe how painful it is to sit through one of his lectures. Avoid this man at all costs, especially if you've taken his class before. He'll stop you in the hall and ask you impossible questions until you just walk away.
Best Professor EVER!!!!!! He will teach you in a way that will help you in medical school/professional programs. Those who put in the time and effort for understanding the material usually do well and if you're willing to study for a good grade, you will earn it. :) He's very dedicated and wants all his students to do well!
Just finished 250 and 251, And Dr. Stevens is one of the best professors I've ever had. He is truly dedicated to the success of his students, and will stop whatever he is doing to explain a concept if you have a question. He makes you think and learn instead of just memorizing. I will miss the class and the people I got to know (study groups)
One of the most amazing professors I have ever had. I took the first part, 250, twice. It is by no means an easy class to go through, but it's 100% worth it. Depending on the amount of work you put in, you get the grade you deserve! You will learn more with him than with anyone else, just be wise and listen to his advice early on-study groups!!!
Dr.Stevens is an A-hole. No matter how much you study. You wouldn't get it. He's test are extremely hard. He'll tell you to study chapter 1-5 for the test but none of that will be on his test. Most of his test are guess work. Try to get a 30 or 40. He curves it. Do not take this class with other hard classes.
Dr. Stevens is a difficult teacher and has the tendency to jump topics during the class. I recommend just approaching the class with some humor. Its hard but not impossible...he curves (regardless of what the syllabus says). Hes nice and is funny I honestly think he cares about his students. Its a learning experience, take him but be ready to work.
Do good in lab...you'll come out fine. If you go to lectures and get clicker points they help. You can even go to friday night lectures to get extra points.
This was the worst class of my life. It should be worth 12 credits due to the amount of work you have to do. Lab tests are ridiculous. He asks a question and then has answers A-J. If you want to get into med school this class will really HELP! Otherwise take it somewhere else because it will bring down your GPA!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Dr. Stevens is absolutely ridiculous and impossible. I am an Honors College student and struggled to pass this class. All his tests could be written in a different language and you would still get the same grade. Lab is TOO much information and relates nothing to lecture information. THIS HORRRRRIBLE MAN.
Dr. Stevens is an amazing teacher. His class is incredibly difficult, but it takes dedication. Most of the complaints you see are from students who did not attend class regularly or did not read deeper into what we were learning. This is an anatomy class, if you didn't pass his class, you are not fit to be in the medical field. It isn't his fault.
he rambles, i love the subject but hated his class, if this class is all u have to do for 15 weeks u might pass
He's not hard. the material is. I had no interest in A/P, took it as an exploratory class, decided not to pursue a medical career however I learned a lot. I'm a slacker and found this class easy enough. anyone who thinks otherwise literally puts no effort into it.
Why do people assume the professor is bad when they don't put in the effort to do well? Dr. Stevens is a great guy and he teaches well. Getting to know him and visiting office hours helps. Yes, the material is VERY hard. Read, read, read and study! Stevens can't help you be a better student, but he presents you all the material to know and master.
Dr. Stevens is one of the best teachers I've ever had. He's so willing to help those who make an effort and wants his students to succeed. He's awesome!
Best professor I've ever had the privilige of having. He helped me into medical school and made me get back on focus with my schooling
Although the class is difficult (only because a lot of information is covered and the complexity is overwhelming), Dr.Stevens is extremely helpful and wants you to understand. The people that fail are those that do not deal with challenges well. Read for understanding and review 100+ powerpoint slides for chapter.Make educated decisions about test
His teaching style is berating, and he insults his class for the majority of the lecture. I asked for advice and he told me I would never get into nursing school (he was wrong). I ended up taking the second half at TCC and learned more from Dr Galyon(M.D.). I now have my BSN and was just accepted to a MSN program, so dont get hung up on his B.S.
Go to class for the clicker points. Highest anyone got in a test for the whole semester was 61%. Class ave exam score was in the high 30%. Long online quizzes. Uses SEVEN books ($$$) & uploads over 50 documents on Blackboard Online. I am a Junior with a 3.85 GPA and this was the only time I did not get an A (Bs both times).
Professor Stevens is a great professor and cares for his students. A majority of the students complaining on this site DO NOT LISTEN to the instructions he gives almost EVERY DAY IN CLASS about forming a study group. I finished with an A in the class, now in medical school and definitely appreciated all his help and knowledge! Great professor!!
YOU HAVE TO STUDY STUDY STUDY for this class! If you don't read and study you will NOT do well. Stevens is okay.Rambles alot in lecture but wants to see his students do well, but he expects YOU to put the time and effort in. Study groups help but for me reading the material over and over helped the best. Go to class for clicker points. They help!
This professor is among the best I've ever had. The people who say he is unclear, too hard, and you have to study to much are not taking his class for the right reason. If you want to succeed in any type of medical field, I would highly recommend taking his class. Helps relate the real world to things you will absolutely NEED to know!
He's Amazing but it's not easy. He makes you think and ask questions. He's willing to help you.
Sporadic during lecture, but helpful when you approach him yourself. The lectures alone don't even cover half the test material so you really have to put in A LOT of extra study time.
Tests are over 200 points but he gives a lot of points bonus (30-40 pts) so it's very possible to get an A. The TA's are amazing so don't be shy to ask questions if you need to. Take advantage of the lab times and stay as long as you have to. Stevens will randomly call on people during lectures but so it's a little intimidating.
The class is hard but don't fret! The TA's are very helpful. He teaches you how to learn..the right way. He's funny...yes he is ADD so just go with it. Don't think you can be a loner in this class. Find study buddies on day 1! You should attend more than one lab and go to all lectures. Don't let test scores scare you! There's a 30-40pt adjustment.
Dr. Stevens is a very playful, witty, sarcastic, fashionable, well groomed, YOUNG man. His class is entertaining. He is a book full of fun facts about Anatomy and life in general. The class is literally freezing even in the summer. The class is challenging and makes you actually think. Dont wear bright colors!!!!
Dr. Stevens is an amazing professor. He teaches you a new way to learn and it helps with the content of the material.
Do not come into this class expecting the professor to teach. He TELLS you to read certain chapters, but does not TEACH or EXPLAIN anything, you must teach yourself. He expects you to already have basic knowledge of anatomy. Took it at TCC, passed with flying colors and actually RETAINED the info that I was taught.
Dr. Stevens' brain is apparently so full of stuff that he spews random and untrue "facts" in the middle of lecture. I recommend bringing your computer and googling what he's talking about while he's talking about it. Make sure to read and research because you can't rely on him to stay on track. Obamacare was discussed as much as anatomy
Definitely a challenging course. If you are looking for an easy A, this is not the class for you, but you will learn a lot. As long as you put in the time and do not allow yourself to be intimidated you will do fine. Great teacher and really cares about the success of his students.
Ok Dr. Stevens... I hated this man for the 2011-2012 year. This is a challenging course and he will pick on you especially if you wear bright colors to let your classmates (of 400) how much you don't know! But I will say that you will learn no matter what grade you receive at the end. You will work your hardest in this class.
By far, the worst teacher I've ever had. Doesn't teach at all, but loves to hear himself talk. Absolutely no organization. Gives assignments with no explanations of what he expects. Biggest waste of time and money ever. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
This class is really interesting, and there is a LOT of material, but to get an A, you'll have to pretty much teach yourself the multiple textbooks he has you buy as well as spend a lot of time in lab. It's not easy so don't take it lightly. I recommend taking this class at a community college instead and having the chance to get a good grade.
I don't recommend taking this professor if you want to learn. He has to curve each test to make everyone pass. He bounces around and I never know what I need to study. I do appreciate his cluster technique which helps but the exams just test how well you can guess. He doesn't teach.
Dr. Stevens... such a fun, happy man but such an unbelievably hard class. Took it over the summer and it became my entire life. He's very, very confusing and hard to follow during lecture. Thank god for the TA's, they are the only thing that kept me passing the class.
Bad Bad Bad. Very little of what he goes over is on the test, he lives to pick on students in lecture. He voices his beliefs way too much and wastes lecture time telling you about his political views. You can email, call, leave voicemails but he'll never reply. Genuinely upset I enrolled
Easily the worst teacher I've ever had. He never covers material that you're tested on. He refuses to posts grades, so you never know how you're doing. If you try to ask him to explain something he talks to you like you're an idiot. I don't understand how he still has his job.
Class requires dedication and motivation. Yes he is vague with what is going to be on tests, but if he wasn't then he would be giving you the answers. He tests you on everything possibly related to each section People who complain about it to being way to hard obviously don't try. Worked full time, took ochem, calc, and analytical chem noexcuses
Dr. Stevens is not a hard teacher, he want you 2 Connect the dots with the info. He does focus on some parts more than the other, but you have to read the book and his powerpoint. Majority of his test comes from pictures, being able to disset the picture. you do need to attend friday night class. you get more done there. Go to more than one LAB too
you learn a lot... tests are hard, but you WILL learn
Dr. Stevens is a very knowledgeable professor. His lecture style is modeled after medical school lectures. Tests are atrocious and most students struggle to get a C, but he curves generously. Many opportunities to earn points with in class quizzes and online quizzes. Requires a lot of time, but in the end very worth it.
A&P is not for whimps. You are expected to read the texts, form study groups, & NOT memorize everything. Connecting the dots to have a whole picture is what is required of this course. You WILL learn IF you ask questions & actively participate in discussions (both lab & lecture). I worked my tail off for that A & don't regret it.
Dr. Stevens was a well educated proessor with a great sense of humor. Although such qualities exsisted he was a horrible teacher. He is very unorganized in his thoughts and will go off on tangents that you cant understand. He wants you to learn by "clustering" which is a very unorganized way on learning this material.
Dr. Steven's means well. You guys can call him an ass all you want. With that being said, his class is extremely difficult and I literally have not stopped studying for his class the entire school year!! His tests are curved so do the best you can. YES you will actually learn and be ready for nursing school or any professional school,Good Luck!
He says he doesn't curve, instead he deviates your scores or something. Truth is, you don't learn what's on the test, the highest grade anyone I knew got was a 60 before the curve, which is around 20-30 points. That's kind of a lot. He will help if you ask, however, he will mercilessly heckle you for not knowing it already
Only professor for Anatomy. Class is very difficult. You must study with a study group. DO NOT be upset if you get a 50 on the exams he will curve it with about 40 points! You have to bust your butt to get an A but it's definitely possible! Attendance is done through clicker questions. If you truly love anatomy you will love this class.
Dr. Stevens has good intentions. Honestly the trick to this class is to go to lab more than once a week, form a study group with the people you frequently see in lab, and get to know Dr. Stevens because he will help you out. Numerically speaking, I was supposed to recieve a B+ in the class, but I got an A. My test scores ranged from 41-63.
Toughest class I've taken, but not impossible to pass. May seem that way at first because receiving an F for every exam is not exactly uplifting. He adds 30% to every test grade you receive but the key to getting an A is to ace the lab exams. Go to class to receive clicker points because they add up to count as one whole test grade. Good luck.
Dr. Stevens is great. Clustering works and it is how you have to think in the real world. Read the book before class and you will understand the lectures. He makes you think & work and does not just hand it you. You will be thankful for the way he teaches and makes you learn. Read, be prepared, and ask questions. No better teacher.
Dr. Stevens teaches as if this is a 600 level class. He curves ridiculously which in the end helps out; however, you wont learn anything.
I took this class over the summer and Dr. Stevens is one of the worst college prof I have had. Does not answer questions or respond to emails. Wastes time talking about irrelevant junk and is very opinionated and rude. The lecture tests are impossible and he even gave us the wrong test one week. He also makes you learn the anatomy of cats too.
Self absorbed, disorganized and rude. Three adjectives that could describe this teacher, however, they would be insufficient. If you like to not know what you're doing 99.9% of the time, finding out about things last minute, busting your butt on material he wont even cover, or generally hate yourself more than pouring HCl in your wounds, take him.
Big pros and cons to this professor. He is tough, and he will make you BUST ASS but if you're going into the health care field it is worth it if you put in the effort. He is opinionated and sarcastic, you just have to take him with a grain of salt. This class made me pull my hair out. As a person, he's great. As a professor, not my favorite.
The only reason I went to the lectures were for clicker points and intel on the lecture exams which were impossible to get anything higher than a 60 on. He's highly opinionated and spends half of the lecture telling stories and ranting on politics. If you enjoy having zero life and spending countless hours at Perry take this class.
This guy is a character. He's full of cool science facts but spends too much time ranting about politics. He genuinely cares about students though. YOU MUST READ. Read each chapter twice, preferably before class and then before the exam. And I mean read and take detailed notes, not just skim. Tests are hard but "grade adjustments" are big.
Stevens goes on rants and sometimes discusses stuff that is irrelevant to what the lecture is about. Sometimes it is useless to take notes in the class. I recommend taking notes from the books, which is the key tool in this class. Form study groups and attend multiple labs & you'll be fine. It is not an easy class and you must study plus work hard.
Dr. Stevens is the only teacher that ever challenged me and taught me how to study hard and actually be a student. Yes he rambles in lecture, but he does cover the material and he expects you to know it. You can't look for professors to spoon-feed you information. STUDY, YOU'RE IN COLLEGE NOW! I got an A both semesters with hard work and dedication
Stevens is the best professor I have ever had. I took him years ago & have gone back to school became a RN and about to go for my DNP. Clustering Works!Nursing school was easy b/c of him. Very helpful! Ask him questions bc he helps you figure it out & so you retain the information. Lectures are great if you not read but understand what you read.
WARNING! DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! If you are lazy, don't take this class because this class is a challenge. It requires more than just studying before exams and hoping for an A. You'll have to study and you'll have to practice, but if have the desire to really learn something then take this class. You'll appreciate Dr. Stevens for every minute of it
He reminds me of Zach Galifianakis. He is hilarious and fun, but the class is VERY difficult. Be warned, he chooses people to answer his questions based off of bright colored clothing, so dress in black or white! MUST read textbook, as not all info is given in lecture. Use ppts, get a study group. Take over the summer so it is your ONLY focus!
It is extremely difficult. I study 30+ hours a week studying and have a B. Taking it in the summer is a mistake because there is a crazy amount of information in a short amount of time. Do not expect to just get by in this class. You will have to work even for a B. The good thing is no class will be as stressful after you take this course.
Professor Stevens is the only anatomy professor and overall he was an okay professor. His lectures are very boring and he talks about nothing. His exams are very hard to pass. He curves the grades like 30 points so if you get a 50-60 on the test you passed. Overall take anatomy at a different school. Like TCC its way easier.
This class is no joke. Read the book prior to going to class and you'll get the most out of lecture. Watch khan academy videos. Clicker points really help with your final grade. He curves 30ish points on the exams. His sarcasm can be obnoxious at times but after you finish you will have learned a lot from this class if you take the time to study!
Stevens is a very smart man, but in my opinion a bad teacher. He always goes off about things that no one understands and doesn't teach anything. BIO250 is a very difficult class. Lab and lecture are 2 different classes packed into one. Be sure to do good in lab, because the average test score for lecture tests is usually a 45%. Not even joking.
Even with the harsh reviews, his class is a MUST-TAKE for anyone going into health sciences. And NOT just because it's a general education requirement. He does a great job of exposing you to the material, all of the material, so when you get to higher education you've at least seen it before. Also pushes you in lab, which is amazingly helpful.
Wish there was a different teacher. I love the subject. Hate this class!
His class is tough, but it's worth it. He teaches you a new way to study and if you ask for it he will help you or find someone that will. Strongly encourage study groups. Personally didn't read the books much, I tried to study his powerpoints as much as possible. Go to more than 1 lab a week to study
I was very excited in the beginning but as the semester went on I noticed that we had 10 exams between the lab and lecture which is too much. It was a very difficult class and I would not recommend taking it in a semester that you're taking multiple science courses. Lots of reading outside of class and lots of time being spent in the lab.
Dr. Stevens clearly shows he enjoys teaching this class however, he goes off topic way too much. His test are almost impossible to get above a 40 on. Lecture and lab are two completely different classes. If you have to take anatomy don't take it at ODU. Especially if you are taking any other course. You have a slim chance of passing his class.
Interesting class, but not easy! Reading the textbook is essential to passing this course. Stay in lab as long as possible and ask a lot of questions!
Tendencies to come across as rude and abrasive. Very unhelpful and seems to lack any genuine interest in preparing for matters regarding pre health matters. Seems to have an opinion about everything. Frankly, the main way I managed to pass the course with an A was through avoidance (studying with others and staying far from him). Avoid if you can.
Worst teacher I've ever experienced in my life... Unlike most science classes you need to study more for lab cause that is what is gonna make you pass, his lecture test are absolutely impossible, I don't even try to study for them anymore they are all MCAT questions and insanely hard. Nothing he says ever makes sense or is relevant to anatomy
This was the easiest class I've ever taken at odu. I usually end up getting a c in all my classes but I got an A in his class and I didn't even have to try that hard. I would take him again if he taught another class I needed
This man knows what he is doing and is trying to help out prospective med students the people who end up failing are just to dumb to apply them selves. His test are great but challenging I like them because they are preparing for my MCAT Dr Stevens has inspired me to apply myself in a way I couldn't before BEST CLASS EVER
Dr. Stevens is definitely a touch one. He really prepares you for the future and doesn't babysit you. YOU are the reason you get a certain grade. He does have a huge curve to make passing possible, however, do not depend on this, you will not pass if you depend solely on the curve. He is a great professor and I hope I get to take him again.
Take the Friday night lecture!! You can go to any but this ones the best. You'll get more out of it.
Love Dr. Stevens. He has taught me more in 2 semesters than I have learned in all my other science classes combined. He is sarcastic and can be crass. Sometimes he can come off as rude, but if you pay attention he always has your learning at the forefront. He really cares that his students "get it". If you put in the effort you'll be fine. STUDY!
Never got above a 60 on the lecture exams but definitely one of my favorite classes. He's a sarcastic ass sometimes but he's always willing to take the time to help you. Getting in a study group is so important.
This class was horrible. He teaches unnecessary things. Its impossible to pass a test.
First. I LOVED this class If you plan on taking this class and not putting much work in, don't take it. Dr. Stevens teaches his class at a very high level, you HAVE to study or you wont understand a thing he says. His tests are hard, but the curve is very fair. There is no reason you can not make a B. 20-30 hours of study a week will get an A.
Professor Stevens is a great guy but he is a hard professor. It was one of the hardest classes I have taken and if you aren't prepared to work for it then don't take the class. A tip would be sit up front, you will get called on but that is the best way to learn in his class. Be prepared to work and spend most of your time on the material.
Stevens is a genius and really knows what hes talking about but doesn't teach it. Highly recommend having a good understanding of chemistry. His lectures aren't helpful, but attendance is recorded and extra credit points are given so it helps to attend. Test are medical school level. An A is possible with adequate study time 20-30 hours.
Dr. Stevens is brilliant, there is no doubting that for a second. However, getting material from his head into your brain is not his forte. He calls on students in class, asking questions he hasn't given answers to yet, causing embarassment. Avg. test grade will be low, but always gets 'curved' 30 points because he only covers 40% in class.
He is very demanding. The average on tests is a 30 to 40 then adds 35 points to curve it. You feel like you aren't learning anything after 'failing' every test. He requires 4-5 textbooks that you will spend $300-500 on. Studying won't change your performance on a test. I recommend taking anatomy at TCC.
Dr Stevens is a great professor. If you take this class you need to be prepared to do the work. If you don't study, his lectures will make no sense. If you do study his lectures become very helpful. Dr Stevens teaches his students how to study to prepare for higher learning. I look forward to taking his upper level classes.
Unless you are a pre-med student I do not recommend you taking Dr. Stevens class. He uses test questions from the M-Cat which is the pre-entrance exam for medical school. You're basically teaching yourself so get a study group asap! You will not pass doing this class alone!
Yes, its a hard class, and lectures are kinda tough to follow sometimes. But this class is made for Pre-health students. However, this prof is very kind and wants your to succeed in life, not just his class. He's also a very good pep-talker. No hw for this class though. like med school, GET A STUDY GROUP. Also also, Khan academy Med is a lifesaver
Steven's is a pain in the ass, but I loved him. He scares most kids in class by asking questions expecting you to have done the reading. He doesn't lecture to give you new information, he reinforces what you should have read. Attend PASS, go to class, read the books, yeah, 3 of them at least. Spend extra time in lab. Ask him questions. STUDY!
Dr Stevens is insanely smart & knows what he's talking about, no one can deny that. He's an awesome person. But he rambles during lecture and doesn't actually teach what'll be tested. He stresses one thing, tests on another. It's really discouraging to study for hours on end just to fail no matter what. Take a&p at community college.
Dr Stevens is a genius. You will have to work hard for the grade but you will learn so much.
by far one of the best professor's Ive had. He helped me learn to study to actually learn the material. Tests are extremely difficult (get a study group!) but he puts a heavy curve on everything and offers extra credit. He cares about the students, so while he may be intimidating, he is always in your corner if you just talk to him.
He is very smart and no one can deny it. This class requires books($513) and a clicker. But I used only one book(P&T) and got information from PASS. Actually, I could learn more from PASS than lectures. You will have a cat presentation, 5 lecture exams, 4 lab exams. Exam average is usually 40-50, so he will add 25-30 extra points to curve it.
Go to pass and you will be fine. Go to lab multiple times a week and you will be fine. There are so many people who complain about this course. Simply put, if you cannot handle Steven's anatomy, how do you expect to handle med school and liability later in life. If you step up, do the work, and put in the effort you will get an A.
He is the ONLY anatomy teacher at ODU. You will fail every lecture test and every lab test. I mean you'll get like 20's and 30's out of a 200 point test. You basically have to teach everything to yourself. Nothing he goes over in class is on the test and makes absolutely no sense what so ever. Good luck! Find someone else!
This class is for medically dedicated students. He teaches at a PhD level, pulls questions from the MCAT, and lecture is only necessary to pass because of clicker points. You have to be so dedicated to this class to do decent. Stevens is incredibly smart, but not a good teacher. Self-taught class. Learn lab stuff to do good on lecture tests!
What he teach doesn't be on the test, you email him he doesn't respond, and isn't accurate for what we should focus on when studying. By far the worst professor I've ever had in life!!
Steven's is a tough teacher. You need to prepare yourself for a lot of work out of class... I didn't have him for part 2 but part one the Pathophys book was my best friend. I read it and took notes for every single unit which really prepared me. go to multiple labs if you can. Go with a friend. Study with a friend. Create mnemonics for drop downs!
Overall this course is difficult. Its a great way to see if you can really hang with a future bio degree. If you make an effort he will go above and beyond to teach you. He will sit in lab and explain things to you until you understand. he has an abrasive teaching method but it works. FIND A STUDY GROUP you will not make it with out one.
Without a doubt, highly difficult course. However, with that being said, this definitely is a make it or break it class and Dr. Stevens teaches it just as that. If you put in the effort, he will help you tremendously! Be ready to devote your life to this class though. Make a study group and use his study techniques and your hard work will pay off!
Go to PASS. This class is challenging but extremely rewarding. Grading is on a curve, and he will take a week or two to post grades. You will not score perfect scores on your tests, ever. Go to PASS. Study the Patho. Phys. book. Don't get discouraged by early grades, this is how he pushes you. GO TO PASS!
Don't take him if you're expecting to do bare minimum & get an easy A. DO take him if you want to be pushed harder than you ever have & want to understand EVERY aspect of the concepts being taught & WHY! He's an amazing wealth of knowledge, doesn't lecture on track so that can be frustrating. Follow the syllabus with your reading & going into exams
If you wanna do medical take this class hard and requires effort but if you put in the effort you will be fine. Doctor Stevens is my favorite and I would 100% take his class again - you just have to put in the work and it is a lot of work but worth it and go to all the lectures morning and night
Very nice person but not the the best lecturer. Rambles and goes off on tangents. His grading is unclear until the very end of the semester.
Professor Stevens is not the best lecturer. He does not teach the material to you and goes off on random tangents about politics. Also he wont ever answer your emails!
Very confusing style of grading. He doesnt clearly explain how assignments are weighted, etc. Also, he curves the tests so much that even when you score a 30 it ends up being an 86 which never made sense to me. Overall, I dont suggest taking his class. Take it at a community college instead
This was the worst class I have ever taken by far. He preaches about studying in groups and clustering but none of those things prepares you for his exams. His exams are AWFUL. He would tell us what to study for, and the test would be about something entirely different. He is super disorganized, and always goes off topic during lecture.
So if you're a memorizer, you won't pass his class. He teaches you how to problem solve based on clinical aspects-if you don't like him, its because you want answers handed to you. You can memorize all you want, but you won't memorize enough-especially not enough to pass the MCAT. This man literally teaches you everything, if you can't adapt--bye!
Fraudulent teaching style defined by embarrassment and shaming for those who aren't going the MD route.. and he never went MD and has like 6 publications over 30 years. Uses class time to discuss half baked politics and to trash talk students instead of teaching materials. I am in Medical School now, and he is still a fraud.
1. Do not email him, he will not respond 2. If you have a question, catch him after class 3. His morning lectures will leave you more confused 4. If you are looking to be taught the material, you are in the wrong class. 5. YouTube, TAs and google will help you get through his class. He is very intelligent but not the best instructor.
Very hard professor. The tests have nothing to do with what is in the reading or Connect assignments. His lectures are not helpful at all. He rambles about random stuff. He will say that clustering works, but it won't. When you ask how to pass the class, he will say cluster and study groups. Still doesn't help. Also, the lab exams are very hard.
Sure, to the average college student Professor Stevens sucks. If you do not put in the study hours outside of class you will not pass. Professor Stevens is extremely smart and expects his students to read the basic material before class so he can build upon the basics with harder more complex info. DON'T take this if you're looking for an easy A.
Dr. Stevens simply does not teach. He goes off on random tangents for his lectures. There really is not point of even going to his classes besides participation/clicker point. He is VERY hard to get ahold of (don't even waste your time). You won't know your grade till the end of the semester beacuse his point system is so messed up. Do not take him
I've had much worse professors than Dr. Stevens. His test are hard to prepare for and often questions are hard to understand and the material is beyond any anatomy and physiology class or the area. The connect resources are pretty much useless and his lab exams are difficult to study for. With all that being said his does care and curves his exams.
Dr. Stevens class is VERY difficult. His exams are based on MCAT questions and things gone over in class, but the topics are tested in a way that makes you think critically rather than regurgitation. His "documents" area is pretty unorganized, but if you go to PASS, read the chapters, and put forth the effort- you will get an A. (Curves Generously)
Dr. Stevens is the most unorganized professor I have ever had. His notes are very scattered and hard to decipher half of the time. He is very hard to get ahold of, and most of the time will not respond to emails. Also, he can go on and on about one topic in lecture and on the exam the topics will be completely different. You have to teach yourself.
Dr. Stevens isn't an easy A by any means. He often goes on tangents about irrelevant topics but does adequately inform you of what to study to do relatively well on the exams. The PowerPoints he provides are the majority of what he covers with a few questions coming from left field on the exams. He curves everything and grades attendance/clicker.
Dr. Stevens is extremely knowledgeable on Anatomy and Physiology. He encourages and makes students participate during lecture. He builds in multiple opportunities to increase your letter grade through a group lab project, clicker/attendance and connect quizzes. Curves on the exams are reasonable given the difficulty. Most of all he cares!!
Dr. Stevens is extremely knowledgeable. His class is very difficult, even for students who have a decent background in biology/chemistry or A&P. His exams are hard to study for due, to the wording of questions, but he curves them generously. He does varying amounts of clicker points everyday and counts attendance into that to give an exam grade.
Dr. Stevens is basically Jesus in pants. He is unquestionably brilliant, welcomes questions, doesn't pull punches (totally tells you if you're being a whiny little you know what lol, and wants everyone willing to work their butt off to succeed. He throws A&P at you in a way that will challenge you to think for yourself. My 3yo even loved him!
The exams are extremely tough, but he curves them by like 30 points. During lecture he gets sidetracked really easily, and goes on political rants a lot. You HAVE to read a lot outside of class. There was a lot of homework. Some weeks we had 7+ HW assignments that were atleast 100 questions each. He is very willing to help anyone who seeks him out.
If you are a student who expects him to teach you step-by-step on AP, he is not for you. You are expected to read and understand all BASICs and he emphasized hard on the chemistry behind AP. I enjoyed his class a lot but not so much on the exam questions. However, he curved generously!
Not the best teacher ever, but is willing to help. Clicker points almost every class, Asks people questions during lectures, lab exams are difficult however if you stay after for lab or go to open lab w/ the TA the models used in lab exams are accessible for study. Exam questions are difficult and cumulative; however, he curves VERY generously.
Worst teacher I have ever taken in my life. I highly recommend not taking him. His tests are extremely difficult that he had to curve them 30-40 points on every test. He is extremely brilliant, but difficult to follow.
Attendance is very important as well as turning point questions. Lecture exams are curved massively 30-40 points. Exams are impossible to study for all end up cumulative. If you try you can easily get a good grade but do not learn anatomy per se but random facts Dr. Stevens thinks are important. Very smart man, entertaining but not a good educator
Dr. Stevens is a very smart man but he treats this class like we are already physicians. Tests are impossible, only 2-3 out of 100+ people pass the test prior to him curving it 40-50%. Do not take him w/o prior medical experience (This is the only reason I passed with an A). He makes the class unnecessarily tough by not explaining topics fully.
Very unorganized, things that are talked about in lecture do not show up on what you are tested on and is impossible to get in contact with.
Please do yourself a favor and do not take his class. He never responds to emails, can't give a straight answer, and is rude af. He curves every test because he knows people will fail. I currently have an exam tomorrow and there's 5 chapters on it. He has only covered 2 of the chapters. Oh and the connect assignments 60+ questions
Worst professor ever. Never responds to emails, terrible lecturer, awful organization skills, and even tests contain thousands of typos and dont even make sense. Reading the textbook did not help at all. Only thing is is that he curves. Useless professor avoid if possible
Avoid Professor Stevens at all costs. It is basically impossible to get in touch with him, he doesn't know the dates of his own tests, very unorganized, just an overall terrible teacher. His tests are nearly impossible to pass the only good think about him is that he gives 30-40 point curves. Worst professor I have had at ODU so far.
My only major complaint is how he conducts tests. When I was told what he says in lectures doesn't pertain to his exams, I thought they were just being harsh. They were right, be careful if you just need a class and don't need this specific class. He isn't a bad guy at all, but his teaching style might throw you off.
I survived his A&P and embryology courses 14 years ago. I still think of him often and how difficult his classes were. However, if you are interested in pre-med, his classes effectively weed out students who lack devotion or intelligence. He is the sun, and we are all mere shards of dust in his universe. haha! Coming from one with a Doctorate...
