never take it

Very difficult to understand. Definitely not the instructor for the working adult. Tardy students need not enroll.
This man is a Jerk. He thinks he is at Berkeley trying to teach but he is not. He is so full of himself its sad. Very hard to understand. I pitty whoever takes this man.
This is not the class to take if you can't struggle through on your own or with tutors. The man provides no instruction. He also grades very harshly and is quite the taskmaster.
He grades very hard. Very anal wants everything to be just perfect and takes off points for simple stuff. Is helpful if you don't ask a dumb question. I learned alot but not to his standards. Take if you have no choice.
Very bad class to take if you don't already have a very strong background in Chemistry. 99.99% of the class got C's or lower. This class will do damage to your GPA.
Very difficult class. But professor is very knowledgeable. If you study hard you'll learn a lot.
He is the worst prof I've ever had. It's not that he is that challenging, it is that his teaching style is so confusing that everyone always feels lost. He intimidates you so that you are scared to ask him questions. Total Hell.
he's tough in the past,,, but he has change his grade system!!! he curves at all testes... The total point is 200... but he curves down to 140... i'm sure he knows the material and expected us to know the materials too
He is very thorough, grades fairly, and holds office hours for those needing help. Not an easy class, so expect to work for your grade.
Very difficult teacher. His lectures are ok, but he tests about three levels above what he teaches. He has a big curve though. Definately have to study a lot.
Very intense/heavy lectures so keep up w/ ur reading and don't miss class. His tests r kinda long but he does give partial credit. If by the end of the semester u have learned what he expected you to, then you have already learned the material 4 chem 200!
WORST professor of my life!!! He can't teach, so if you feel that you can basically teach yourself this course, then go ahead. Makes his students feel stupid and small. Plays obvious favorites and his grading is unfair. Belongs as a lab rat!
his class is for "A" chem students only. he has no time & doesn't even fake concern for students who need extra help. sure, he's smart. but can he teach well? does he make o-chem interesting? is he helpful? NO,NO&NO. totally unsympat
most difficult teacher i've had yet! plays favorites, unfair grading, belittles students, tests are rediculous! daily frustration with this class. i've had teachers that couldn't speak english that were better.
He has the most ridiculously difficult exams I've ever taken. He knows the matterial, but has little patience for people who don't get it - especially if he thinks they aren't keeping up on reading/homework. Teke him only if you're good at chem.
This guy is an A S S! Tests are too hard, lectures are unhelpful, he picks favorites, grades unfair, DOESN'T DO ANY PROBLEM SOLVING, keeps you for the entire lab time, and everything is F-ING "very, very important, is it not?".
yeah he's cool just sit back and blaze one and time just flies.
Awful teacher!!! he needs a microphone b/c he mumbles a lot, good luck figuring out what he is saying. Not patient and speak condecendingly to students. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME WITH THIS GUY.
What he teaches and he tests on are on two seperate scales. What he teachesis on the same scale as the book, what he tests on is are things an actual o-chemist should know. Cant study for test because the tests arent from his notes or the book, where are they from, from the deep catacombs of his mind.
TEACHES BASICS OF NEEDS TO BE LEARNED. YOU MUST BE ABLE TO APPLY CONCEPTS THAT ARE TAUGHT. READ THE BOOK BECAUSE SCANTRON PORTION OF THE TEST USES A LOT OF INFO DIRECTLY FROM THE READING. IT IS A HARD CLASS BUT ITS NOT IMPOSSIBLE..JUST PUT FORTH THE EFFORT. LAB TESTS ARE HARD. STUDY A LOT FOR IT.
OMG! the worst experience ever! his tests are nothing like the book and he talks down to his students. good luck, I wouldn't do it if I knew...
If you want to learn a lot and are interested in Chemistry then this is the class for you. If you want an easy A ... take another class. If, however; you are interested in Chem and do take this class be prepared to learn and study on your own!
Worst teacher of my life. His tests are completely ridiculous. I probably studied around 30 hours a week and barely pulled a C. Has no patience for questions that he thinks are dumb. He acts like it is an inconvenience for him to be there and we are just wasting his time. Needs to be fired!
basically, if you want to pass with a decent grade you better be able to teach yourself otherwise your screwed..he has office hours but if you're taking night classes and you work..good luck making it. you will lose a lot of points on lab reports cuz he grades them very tuff. choose diff. teahcer...
He's a nice teacher and I think he wants to be helpful. BUT he is not good at explaining stuff and his exams are insanely hard and often cover stuff that he didn't lecture on!!
Lectures are useless. He speaks to you like your an idiot if you ask a question. Tests are insanely difficult. Class is curved so you'll probably pass but fail Ochem-2. Do not take this class unless you're prepared to teach yourself.
dope teacher, by far one of the best. but dont think he's going to give you an easy A.
I still have post traumatic stress disorder from this class. This instructor belongs in a lab, absolutely not in front of a class. Unhelpful, condescending, arrogant, unknowledgable, uncooperative, unfair in his grading, and his grades were weeks late in being reported. Take anyone but this guy.
VERY HARD CLASS! Tests WAY ABOVE text or lecture- but is very nice and wants you to do well. If you ASK for help he WILL HELP YOU. Frustrating testing process but good instructor overall, very passionate about O-Chem- which I appreciate. Be prepared to work!! BUY STUDY GUIDE and work every prob!
At first glance, he seems nice. Then you ask a question and are treated to a huge helping condecention. He appears to by annoyed that students don't absorb everthing he says at lightening speed. His tests are insane. He lectures at a level 3 but tests at a level 300. Try to take it with someone else...
Clear in his lectures but lectures are useless. He just talks with the ppt. slides! You need to sit yourself with the book down and study and work homework problems. Exams are juicy with detailed mechanisms and include multiple choice and can be up to 7 pages of written responses.
very hard teacher...not very clear at all. you need to be wide awake and study your a$$ off if u even want to pass! im serious.
This teacher is very knowledgeable and very cooperative. He basically tests from the homework, which few people do. If you understand the homework he has given (not just work it out), then you will have no problem with his tests. Chemistry is not an easy subject, and he is not an easy A. Study and you will be rewarded with knowledge and an A.
He is not an easy A, the slide shows are enough to put anyone to sleep. Just listen and he will tell you what the test is over, homework ,specific notes ,and charts in the book. WORK out the homework!!!! That is the biggest part of the test, plus he gives partial credit if you were on the right path. Overall I think he is a good teacher.
You must study harder than you ever would imagine and he makes the exams too long so you don't have enough to finish them
Luckily the book is very clear. His teaching in class is vague and he spends too much time on very simple concepts then breezes through difficult ones. Also he speaks with an accent and sometimes that becomes a distraction. On the plus side he is very fair in his grading and follows his syllabus.
He takes off points for hand-ins that have a date missing or that have any tears no matter how small. The book used for the Lab is made poorly so you have to "cut" the pages out rather than tear them.So basically he's punishing the student for the administrations decisions.Trys to make everyone chemistry wizards when we're there just for the grade.
He is NOT and easy A. He has pet-peeves about folded papers, and won't hesitate to mark off points. Make sure when you have a question, it's an "intelligent" one because he will tell you straight off not to waist his class time. He's passionate about his work, but somehow has seemed to have lost his ability to reach out to his students.
This class is what you make of it, if you want an A-work for it. Work ALL the homework problems, all quizzes and tests questions are taken from those materials. You will not turn it in- but you will not do well without it. He follows the syllabus exactly. You know what to expect. Don't cry if you fail - you earned it!
this class is as hard as they say. not helpful, teaches at level 1 but tests are impossibly hard.not what he lectured or in the book, 2/3 class dropped I was passing with a B only because his curve is so large, but what are you really learning? gets off track the rest of the class has to cram 7 ch into 6wk.pulls 5.5 hr lectures when he gets behind
His class is difficult but not impossible to pass or even get a good grade in. Prefers students to try problem solving on their own before consulting with him but he's willing to meet with students during office hours. No HW, but highly recommend doing practice problems in textbook because his practice problems in class do not mirror his exams.
The only chemistry teacher ive ever had that covers all the material. He is probably the hardest OChem teacher out there but if you work hard in his class he will help you develop an understanding beyond your expectations. I fell in love with chemistry after taking his classes and now its my major. I only recomend him for serious chemistry students
Very difficult but fair. Material is straight forward and he is very willing to help students who take the time to ask. Doesn't take jokes about making life easier on students but always in good humor.
Professor Gurumurthy is obviously a man who feels very passionately about what he teaches. Unfortunately, I think that research might be a more appropriate place for him, as he has a hard time connecting with his students and/or making the subject material interesting. His lab final was extremely difficult, and everyone in the class did poorly.
I took his Intro to chemistry; His class seemed hard but, I am now at the University of Texas at Austin and I flew through CHEM-I & II with no problems. I am glad I took his class after I look back it really prepared me. If your looking for just an easy class is not for you, but if you are moving on through CHEM I & II you'll be ready & do well.
SERIOUS DAMAGE TO GPA! He makes it impossible to pass the class with a decent grade. Definitely plays favorites. Not helpful at all when asking questions. Sure he's a genius in his area, but is it worth it when you can't teach? Do not take his class. He is a discouragement towards people wanting a career in Chemistry.
He's very repetitious and crystal clear, but cannot think outside the box. It's true, he does teach a bit lower than the tests require, but his tests are based off the book. As long as you aren't a slacker, you should do well. He does dock points for torn paper, bad handwriting, and bad notation. Put in some effort and he'll help you succeed.
I think he presented the concepts well and offered help many times. O chem isn't supposed to be easy!
Most of what he taught was directly from the text. Even the power point slides he used are pages directly taken from the book. However this is useful because he allows you to print them out. I printed all the sections out and put them in a folder, which I then used to write all class notes on. Show him your interested and he will favor you.
Definitely not the kind of class where you just go to lectures and expect to do well. It's important in this class to keep up with the reading. Here's a secret on how to do well in his class: do his sample tests and chapter questions until you know them backward and forward. Overall I enjoyed this class and learned a lot!
Doctor Gurumurthy is an extremely intelligent man. City College should feel honored to have him. He is the real McCoy. If you have the desire and focus you will learn more than you can imagine from him. Thank you Dr. Gurumurthy!!
Oh lordy...he was as hard as they say he is and just as concerened with the appearence of your work as its content. Not an easy class, but not impossible. READ, READ, READ!! Do the example problems he give you in the syllabus and study like mad for the final in lecture and lab...good luck.
Whew, made it out alive with a B. His test questions are not the simple define this and step A to Step B type problems...often they are 5-6 steps long and rely on knowledge of previous chapters, so if you don't read you're SOL...hint learn your ions as soon as you get the book, do the chapter problems assigned in the syllabus...good luck guys.
Chem is hard but he does a really good job in explaining everything. His exams are hard and he is a pretty difficult grader to boot. He's a very nice guy though. He'll prepare you for CHEM 200 very well. He might seem impossible at first but I don't regret taking him. I'd take him again.
okay job at lecturing clearly, hard to understand sometimes with his accent and speed at which he talks. The one time asked him a question his reply was "WHAT DID I SAY IN LECTURE". That was the last time I asked anything. Chem is very hard for me and he has not been much help in helping me understand!!!!
He was very fair, and had a nice curve. Don't think it'll be easy to do well though. You do have to work hard. Working problems and studying helps a lot. Tests are not difficult if you study. He would talk A LOT in lab, and therefore left us very little time to actually do the lab itself.
Ram knows his stuff, and sometimes teaches at a higher level than students are ready for. However, if you work hard and keep up, you will learn alot. Lazy people shouldn't even bother with this class. Nice guy, grades on curve. Don't ask stupid questions, he won't answer. Refers to class as 'my dear friends'. Show interest 2 get in his good graces.
It was a night class for me, and he was so mono-toned. I always fell asleep. His class isn't hard, I rarely ever listened and a skipped class a number of times. The learning I did was mainly on my own because he lectures never helped me. He grading is very fair.
Love him!Super helpful, great teacher. really cares about ur lrning exp. I got an A, many failed, but it is b/c they don't care.He enjoys teaching. Actually helped me w/my nutrition hmwrk. Overall this guy is amazing. Take him if you want to really learn chemistry. well organized and a perfectionist, but that is what makes him great!
At first I didn't like him that much. He sets the standard high and maintains that level all semester long. He earned my respect and made me want to learn chemistry. He is a brilliant teacher who genuinely cares about teaching chemistry. Take him if you really want to learn.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASSES! (Go to Mesa and take Chem w/Fremland instead). If you decide to torture yourself DO NOT SMILE while in his class. He will throw you out of the classroom. I'm not joking. He makes Chem way harder than it needs to be. Find another prof.
Undoubtedly the best teacher I have ever had. Dr. Gurumurthy takes his role as a professor seriously and has high expectations, but will give of his time and expertise without question. The seemingly impossible questions he asks on exams are thought provoking and will help you in the long run, even if they hurt your brain and pride for a moment.
The class was easy, but unnecessary. Lectures were straight out of the book. Any question I asked was answered with either "I already covered that" or "You won't need that in this course".
Dr. Gurumurthy is a very serious and dedicated professor and expects the same from his students. He is brutally (very brutally) honest, and could be considered critical. If you are someone who needs a professor to pat you on the back and tell you that you are special, look elsewhere. Do ALL the homework (a lot) and come to office hours = success
Where to start... He is really rude and thinks that everybody should live and breath for chemestry. His test are really challenging and has a serious problem to accept remark from student (even if your right). The only good thing in this class is that the curve is pretty good.If you think you will have a hard time in chemestry take someone ELSE!!!!!
Study his lectures, Do HW/Practice problems, Read the Book, GO TO CLASS, = FAIL = Large curve, get a C, move on.
he hates being asked questions and will demean you if you even ask. of course at the begining of the semester he says he loves to answer ?tions. total b.s. after he humiliates you for asking. why does he even teach if he hates students?
poor instructor, I don't know where they found this guy, but he didn't even know about nuclear transmutation. I am very unimpressed with him and SDCC choice in hiring him.
I agree with every comment about Chem 152 I read. Do not depend on him to teach you anything. He is arrogant and useless as a teacher; I could write volumes on how useless he is as a teacher.
Organic chem in general is hard> make fash cards. Prof gurumurthy is pretty clear on what he expects you to know and willinf to help when u dont understand. Key is to be engaged in his lectures/lab everytime and know whats going on and you will do well.
This class is very hard, and he does not appreciate disruptive students who think they are still in high school. He is in no way a jerk, and breaks down the material well. He will not answer a question only if he feels it will throw off the entire class. This guy really is not that bad. He realizes his course is tough and throws in a huge curve.
His class is hard and the lectures are out of the book. He is always willing to help if you ask. You need to be pro-active in learning if you want to do well. Learned a lot and he knows loves the subject. Great Professor.
Total Tool. Clear, yet impersonal. Teaches class based on his assumptions, often full of his perspective thoughts. I learned more from the text book, but uses his notes for the exams. Total Tool
I took Ram for 152, 231 and 233. Anyone that talks bad about him is just lazy and unmotivated. Of course it's hard, it's chemistry people! If you can't get through his class, then you definitely won't make it as a science major...he is so smart, and really nice once you get to know him. Thanks to him I feel fully prepared to go to UC. Thanks Ram.
A great chemist and very smart, but cannot teach.
Chem is my major, if I didn't already have an interest I would have been miserable. He basically reads off a powerpoint which you can get offline. He knows his stuff for sure. Hates stupid questions and will make you look like an idiot if you ask one in class. Whole grade is based off 3 tests and a final. Tests go way longer then the allotted time!
I took him for both 152 and 231. This guys is just odd, everything you won't want in a coworker is what this guy is. He is Painstaking and Obsessive. He doesn't like to repeat himself, forget about asking questions. Forces you to take both lab and lecture with him, even though are not legal obligated to and totally plays favorites. Avoid past 152
He is really hard. He tests way above the lectures and homework. Almost no way to get an "A" unless you are gifted or a favorite of his and he "curves" your test well. I've seen him give more points to certain students. I studied 40+ hours a week and earned a B. Had an A going into the final but impossible! I learned from him but GPA suffered.
Pros: Grades on a curve; knows the material; approachable during office hours; directly explains what he's looking for (very specific) - I personally like this direction; some might view this as picky. Cons: Difficult exams; no extra credit; lecture grade is strictly based on exams. I would take CHEM 233 w/him.
He's very particular when it comes to his requirements, and expects students to be diligent about HW. He doesn't require you to submit them, but it helps a lot on his tests. His tests are very long (100+ pts,but that's more chances for you to make good. He grades on a curve, so that could work for or against you.
Very difficult class but good professor. Ochem will be hard no matter who the prof is. He teaches the material well and wants his students to work hard. If you study hard, you will earn an A. But if you slack off, it is not impossible to pass. Exams are out of 150 but with 175+ points possible. Strict professor, but he good if your major is chemist
Dr. Gurumurthy is a great teacher. I did learn alot from him, however there was a disconnect in my learning of this material, and the tests. Do your best on the first two tests, because the third test and final are very difficult. The amount of material one must memorize is horrible. I definitely had a hard time, and feel defeated.
Professor Gurumurthy is great. He tells you exactly how to pass his class: Do the end of chapter review questions and check them with your solutions manual! It is a lot of work, but if you put in the effort, you will pass. He curves all his exams. Stay on top of your work throughout semester because his final will make your brain sweat. Goodluck!
He is not helpful at all. If you have a question, he makes you feel stupid, and wont answer. He repeats himself OVER and OVER on stuff we already understand. He grades SUPER hard. For example, if you turn in a lab, and it says that a part of the color spectrum "appears pink" he may mark it wrong, and ask you to write that it's "magenta"...
I told the dean on this guy! He's very rude and does not answer questions treats you like your in high school still or even enough preschool! He's unhelpful and very hard to understand at times.
This prof is very bad DON't ever take him you will fail your class. he is not explaining very well plus his tests are so hard and tricky DON'T TAKE HIM I device you he is not clear. and have a bad attitude
If I didn't need this class, then I would've skipped it. He lectures with powerpoint and gives out hw problems to practice. He's rude if you ask him a question regarding the lecture or lab. He'll belittle you by saying that you should know this "stuff" by now if you incorrectly answer.
Awful teacher. He is really rude and condescending, which makes it very intimidating to ask questions. He treats students like idiots when they ask for help. He has an arrogant attitude. The first day of class he commented that "American students do not understand that they must work hard to achieve an A in chemistry." DO NOT TAKE!
he is really not clear, bad temper, hard with the materiel. he doesnt expalin well and DON't ever take him you will fail
Holy Moses, this class is hard. Particularly the cumulative lab final. Tests are difficult. If you want to do well, do the problems in the text book, do his practice problems, and try to keep up with studying. He curves tests and gives a few bonus quizzes. Might be 2 As in the whole class.
Difficult class mixed with a hard to understand teacher equals bad semester. This guy is very strict in grading, I was marked off puts for putting a wrong date of all things. His lab final was ridiculously hard. He repeats very simple things over and over, difficult things he doesn't.i didn't ask questions cuz he makes everyone who asks feel stupid
Hard class mixed with bad teacher equals bad grades. Dr. Gurumurthy has bad attitude, bad temper and very rude. his lecture is very boring and not interesting at all. he tests in what he not lectures. will make you look stupid if you ask him a question. his tests are way hard than the book or the slides. his slides are useless. do not take him.
Dr.Gurumurthy is a good professor, but the test questions can be harder that the material he covers. YOU NEED TO READ THE TEXTBOOK!!
If you are naturally gifted at Chemistry or have all the time in the world to read the book cover to cover you will do well. If you never took a Chem class, his class will be challenging. He doesn't take kindly to questions and can make you feel stupid for asking sometimes. All that being said I tested poorly(F) on 2/4 tests and still got a C.
Chemistry is a difficult subject, but this professor makes it very clear... He is better than Cryspen. His tests can be difficult but doable. Take it!! You'll learn.
If you are planning to go to Chem 200 or beyond do yourself a favor and take Dr. Gurumurthy. You will be well prepared. His expectations are clear. Chemistry is a science and there are conventions you have to abide by. I think he is a great teacher. He prepares you well for your next level class and also in how to approach college level coursework.
Took both the lab and the lecture in summer so it was twice as fast as the regular 152 he greatly prepares you for chemistry and demonstrates how challenging it is. If you study you can get the A.
Professor Gurumurthy is the best chem teacher I have had at City, I took this class for summer and, while the test were not easy, your lecture notes should be sufficient study material.
I have taken 2 classes with Gurumurthy. It is clear that he loves chemistry and teaching, but he is not very considerate of his students. Don't bother asking for clarity if you have difficulty understanding something in class. He will most likely insult you, and he will make an example of you in front of the class for a good 25min.
Dr. Ram is probably one of the most rudest teachers Ive ever had in my lifetime. Im 31 years old and am saying this to keep you safe. Stay Away! He's very tough and not helpful at all. If you even try to ask him a question he won't answer it. He makes you feel stupid. He has bad attitude and just overall isn't the nicest person.
He uses an online homework system that is frustrating. He is very rude to the students in the class. He politely ask you to shut up! In addition, he has a tick english accent. don't take this class
He is a tough and super picky professor. The online HW is very expensive to buy-$40- and it's very difficult n time counduming. He's not patient enough in teaching. Lectures are too long n boring. He speaks so fast n unclear to understand. It seems he's teaching by himself for himself only. If you do struggle with math , do not take this class!
I couldn't understand anything he said. He was a nice guy and pretty helpful but I would not take him again.
Professor Gurumurthy is a respectful professor. He really teaches Good and his lectures are very detailed and excellent to read. But tests are really hard, today wee had a test and i can say Oh my god! I spent lots pf times, frankly, but! It was very hard. If you study ,it must be easier,
I took Gurumurthy 2 semesters ago, and I'm glad I did! Last semester seemed like a breeze to me because thanks to Gurumurthy I was well prepared. I admit he's rude, but he does know his stuff. I recommend everyone to take this class although you'll have to work HARD to get a good grade. PS. Use your textbook! Its a great help!
Dr. Gurumurthy is a true professional. I appreciate that he sets boundaries with students and expects college level work. The only thing I didn't like was when he occasionally scolded students. Other than that he is a great instructor. He will prepare you for higher level Chem courses. If you truly want to learn something he is the one to take.
He is articulate.
Honestly this man has a very thick accent and speaks on a microphone he is very hard to understand!!! I laugh myself through the course because it was just impossible to focus from his microphone squeaking to being too low or too high with the volume. He is the toughest test grader I have had so far read your book and teach yourself!!
Knows his Chem. Little brutal if you don't communicate w him. He values that students make an effort inside and out of class. Blackboard has everything from lecture to lab materials he covers in class+ online hw. Don't be afraid to ask questions! Make sure you do the problems he has outlined for practice (test Q's are modeled from there usually)
DO NOT TAKE FOR LAB! he instructs you to read the lab for that week ahead of time but then takes FOREVER to go over EVERY tiny detail (I should add the lab manual explains step by step what to do) he pretty much just reads the lab manual during that time. He's SUPER picky about the formatting of the labs you hand in too (every lab is turned in).
He was ok for lecture, but SUPER BORING! Also, SUPER condescending, he asks the class questions and if you get it wrong he more or less says "someone needs to study more" (even though we just started that chapter) in addition just makes you feel dumb. The exams are pretty straight forward though, about 5 exams total.
I've been an A student all my life and he's the first F i've ever gotten. Lectures and Tests are brutal Long, repetitive, he lectures from the same powerpoint you have access from blackboard. My main issue is he can keep things simpler but he chooses to explain it in the most complicated long way. He's grading system is so screwed up.
He is a very good professor. At first I was scared to take him because of the negative reviews. I was really surprised! He is a nice professor, just very strict. He really wants you to understand the material! I would take him again!
No no no , he is tough and the lectures are too long n boring, home works r time consuming.
he's a nice teacher, but he's VERY tough and expects a lot from you. so if chem is not your best, then you should probably take a different proffesor.
His lecture is simple. The homework is very difficult and more advanced then the lecture or book covered. His lab grading is brutal. He is very particular starting with how you write the date to the paper being slightly torn from removing it from the book. He often will talk to the class like a high school class which is annoying when you're grown
He is not helpful and is very intimidating.
He talks a lot and there is lots of homework. He grades the homework fairly and he has a fair grading scale.
IF you are taking this course for credit you better know your staff before then otherwise he will screw you GPA sack at teaching
This guy is horrible please do not take his class you cannot ask questions or he won't insult you stating that you're wasting time. You're basically teaching yourself and he is not flexible and you can understand his very strong accent literally bad bad bad. The homework online is difficult because you have to draw a bunch of orbital's
If you work hard you will succeed, just like anything in life. He expects his students to be adults and put in the work as they should. I feel uber prepared for chemistry to come.
Couldn't understand anything he would say because of his accent. Basically have to teach yourself. Could be rude when you ask him questions. Really strict and his tests are really long and hard.
Dr Gurumurthy is a vert fair professor he doesn't expect you know anything he hasn't thoroughly gone over. his lectures are very clear and leaves no confusion, he always gives practice exams that are similar to what he plans to test you on. the online hw module was extremly frustrating but had nothing to do with his teaching skills
A teacher who actually teaches! I find his lectures to be very clear and engaging. He teaches the material you need to know, so if you show up and pay attention you are gold. There is homework, but not too much, and it is good practice for the exams. He wants you to take learning seriously, but is funny too. Getting my money's worth with him.
He gives you everything you need to know. Make sure you study both lecture notes (which he gives you online ahead of time and book. If you don't understand something he feels has been explained well in class go to his office hours. He will do his best to see and understand why and what it is you are not getting. Step by step he will get you there.
Teacher is very monotoned. Makes you feel dumb when you ask questions that are obvious to him but not to the rest of the class. I taught myself the material basically the whole semester.
Rude, yells at students as if they are like children. Very condescending and unapproachable. Rushes lectures not allowing time for questions or any classroom participation. Be prepared to sit there and listen. He has extreme control issues and tries to run his class like a prison, do not take his class.
Poor attitude. It's not a comfortable environment and he's very easily agitated. He is not very accessible. His lectures are directly from the slides provided by the book publisher. He covers the material, but it's dry. His tests are fair, and he grades very easy. All HW online. 2 tests in class, 1 online, +cumulative final. Unpleasant, but easy A
He is a bit dry, but he truly loves chemistry and is an excellent teacher. Takes difficult concepts and makes them easy to understand. Isn't approachable at first, but if you are persistent and show you care, he is receptive. Show up to class and take a little time to study and you'll get an A, mainly because he explains chemistry so well.
Prof Gurumurthy wasnt that bad. Chemistry is hard in general. he gives lots of homework(scantron form) but if you read his powerpoints you'll be able to answer all of them. he encourages students to pass. i didnt buy the textbook and i did pretty good. the exams were not so bad, 90% of them discussed in the class so try your best not to skip class.
This guy will work you like a dog. DO NOT TAKE DURING SUMMER!!!He is smart and passionate about the subject that is something that does show. He says to approach him but he is unapproachable, not only will he not answer your question, but make you question your question. He expects you to get it on your own. If you don't have time for tutoring, no
Gurumurthy uses Wiley for homework and online test. Compared to ALEKS, Wiley is obsolete. On top of an outdated computer program, his teaching methods are no different. Incredibly unapproachable and belittling. His moods were the hardest part of the class. DO NOT TAKE DURING SUMMER and steer clear in general for a teacher if you can.
The most TOUGH grader plus the most ROUGH exam. Today we had our first exam and oh my god, the worst and hardest exam ever. I never recommend this class however he is very respected and well educated. Professor Gurumurty I hope you read my comment and give us the other exams much easier. Your first exam was not fair at all. V r not chem major. Thx
He explains on the blackboard that two plus two is equal four, but the question that he asks you on the exam is to explain why two plus two is equal to three minus one and how it relates to something plus something times to double of the first thing !? And the bad news is that there's no partial grading!
Exactly! The questions in the exam never been covered during the class. He teaches very basic during lecture and asks you in detail and advanced on exams. For example, in lecture he says C4h is butane and you are happy that you got it! But the question in exam will be like this //+ / is equal to /// or ///!? And it would have 20 points!
You will hear things you won't understand and things of that nature. Has an accent so sometimes its hard to understand, indeed.
Save your gpa by not taking this class. You expect getting A but he grades you somehow to get F
Do not ruin your life by taking this class. He is the most tough and rough professor ever. You will regret. Exam questions are come from another planet except the planet earth. I wish i could read the rates befor taking this horrible and super duper hard class. Too much homeworks and too much slides to study plus the book. Hard and horrible
if you attend the lectures and study weekly you are ok
Amazing teacher! Don't except an easy A, as chemistry is a difficult area of study, but if you do the homework, come to class, and study you will do well. He sets very clear expectations for the class from the get go, and is an excellent lecturer making difficult topics easy to understand.
Professor is clear at the very beginning of semester on his expectations. Don't be fooled by how inspirational he may sound. His lectures are strictly power point presentations straight out of the book. He does not engage the class nor does he teach much. Save your GPA, if you have an option for another professor do yourself the favor.
Here's what you need to know: lectures are in depth, he takes time to explain concepts-he wants you to pass. You need to put in the work-read, work the problems and use his office hours if you need them. Not much homework, tests are tough but he tells you what he tests on. He is strict and holds you accountable, overall a great teacher!
You have to get used to him and he can at first come off a little blunt but he is a terrific professor. He's passionate and wants students to get the material. Do the reading and "practice tests" and you should do well in his clas. Don't be afraid to ask questions and pay attention in lecture. He won't stand for distractions so turn off your phone.
Beware of this class. It took a group of friends and a lot of study sessions in the LRC to be able to pass this course. This professor is unapproachable (by experience) very monotone, ask questions he'll make you feel stupid. The test are somewhat hard with some curving. The lab easy as long as you pass his rules for the grade! You been warned.
Dr. Gurumurthy definitely shows interest in the subject he teaches. He is a bit dry and will not hesitate to call you out in front of the whole class if he suspects that you're doing something wrong, or if you simply ask a question on matetial he believes he already covered. There were about 4 homework assignments and the exams are tough so study!!
Gurumurthy is a serious guy. He expects you to prepare and pay attention in class. He invites questions during lecture, but his communication style often makes his responses sound condescending. His grading is very reasonable and you'll always know what's expected of you.
hes very tough. The only upside was that he was somewhat leniant with curving the tests. Otherwise, hes kinda a jerk. Condescending, he is angry when people dont anwser immedieately. He is boring, and with a thick accent, is hard to grasp at times. A regrettable class from day one.
Good at explaining lectures. Breaks down information efficiently, makes it easier to digest. Its great that his teaching method works for most of us. Yet.. He angrily raises his voice at students when asked simple questions. Gets irritated very, very easy. Its disrespectful and unprofessional. There are more appropriate ways to communicate.
There is a homework for every quiz but they are worth the same. The quizzes are hard, but he usually grades on a curve. Also, an A is 100-87 %, B is 87-75 % etc. His teaching style and accent can be hard to get by which leaves you to go over it all again at home. Self-learning is used by most here.
DO NOT TAKE HIM. I repeat. This guy is rude and talks to his students super conscending. He blames his "accent" but really he would put you down and make you feel small if you ask a question. I literally had to drop his class because I couldn't stand how much of a rude person he is. He also teaches slow and is unorganized literally not worth it.
He doesn't let you leave early without permission and lectures for the entire period. He is VERY thorough with his lecture, and explains things in a way that makes it easy to understand. I sat at the front of the classroom and made sure to participate because that helps me learn better. If you pay attention, and study a bit at home, you'll pass.
Just 3 homework and 3 exams.. he is not very approachable or kind to talk to but I rather take him than Parker because his class is Less heavy compare to Parker class. I just cant deal with tons of homework since she use aleks. you will feels like he is always mad especially when you make little mistake but just try your best and seek for tutor.
Thorough lectures. He really cares about chemistry and that comes through in his lectures. He marks a lot on papers for grading but he gives fair scores. He wants you to know what you did wrong so you're able to work on it and get better. I am hoping to take him for Chem 200.
hes not as bad as most people. he just seems intimidating, but if you actually pay attention and read (like youre supposed to do at college), youll get it. hes passionate about the subject as well. hes actually funny once your deep into the class.
You really have to study. His exams require you to memorize and master the subjects. Doing the practice questions in the text book after each chapter is helpful.
i dont mind him as a teacher and lecturer, but his chem 231 mid term was difficult to finish even though the content was not even that hard. the lack of time alone was enough to result in many low grades.
mmmm I wish i failed his class so that i can repeat it for better gpa... :..(
Not as bad as people make him seem to be. Just go to class, pay attention, practice the problems and you'll be fine. Avoid being on your phone, he will snap at you, besides that hes very passionate about chemistry
Dr. Gurumurthy is a great chem teacher but at times can be a bit intimidating. Pay attention to your significant figures and keep up with the class.
Professor is not the greatest, he expects you to teach yourself. You ask a question, he answers with read the textbook. Very tough grader and incredibly boring, he won't make lecture interesting in any way. If you don't study hard core you won't pass, you better like chem. (Don't do it)
He does not answer questions well, expects students to know. Not recommend take someone else
Regardless of the fact that I got a B+ I would not recommend this teacher to anyone. I was off by .01% to get an A. He expects you to know things off jump and he has bad communication skills. Your whole grade revolves around only 3: things two test and the homework given. He gives no extra credit at all or chances to get your grade up. 0% lenient!!
His lectures are boring and he never tries to make them interesting in any way and the homework is excessive, yet it can take a huge chunk of your grade if you don't do it, though the tests are ok. The worst part about him is that he's unapproachable and seems to overly berate his students on anything they do, even when they just ask questions.
I needed to take this class to take care of my requirements... and I regret taking this teacher. He is not approachable and has a very short temper (I only had one zoom meeting with him because this was an online only class). If you have the choice to not take this class with this professor, I suggest you find another teacher.
As others have noted, do not take this professor unless you intend to teach your self the material. There were 2 midterms and a final...that's it. No PP uploaded, hw, quizzes or extra credit to monitor or improve progress. Just him uploading a recorded lecture and 3 all or nothing tests to determine your grade. Not worth the money or time imo.
Please do not take this class. Besides not explaining correctly he is not accessible outside of class. Your grade depends solely on exams and 1 quiz, that is it. No homework or extra credit to help your grade. This is a self-taught class. Topics on exams are not reviewed much, and topics reviewed in lectures don't show on exams.
He depends solely on the website to grade aside from the exams taken in canvas. He is very stern and has no compassion when it comes to real life events. Snaps through email or just avoids responding all together. Exams don't always correspond to what's taught in lectures. Ample amount of time given to complete assignments.
He lectures well but it's fast paced and doesn't really follow the slideshow. You will do well if u take notes before class and ask questions during lecture. He is picky about small things. Do the hw and get close to 100% bc it helps a lot. You will be graded on 4 things so you need to study. If you are not a chem/stem major his class will be hard.
Letter grades will be assigned based on the average percentage of total points earned on 1 quiz, 2 exams, and 1 final exam, 87-100% = A 75-86% = B 60-74% = C 50-59% = D
Amazing professor
Professor Gurumurthy's teaching style mainly involved using lecture slides and mostly multiple choice question scantron exams. If you are great at test taking and following along in lectures then you will do fine in the class.
Very particular about his lab reports and strict about lab policy but the criteria is generally simple to understand. Has a pre-lab lecture so make sure to listen. Yes he can come off as intimidating but he is helpful when you ask questions. Overall a lecture heavy professor so take notes in his lecture classes and listen to his rules in the lab.
Prof. Gurumurthy's chemistry course was ideal for my learning style. Lots of reading, studying, quizzing, and testing. But if you are serious about math and science, there's no reason you shouldn't get an A.
Prof. Gurumurthy's class can be tough, but if you stay focused and use resources like the textbook and Unstuck ai, you'll do well. Engaging with the material is key - the lectures are worth attending.
