Amazing Prof!! He doesn't move on unless everyone gets the lesson and he goes in depth with all his lessons even if you don't get Calculus at all guaranteed at least a C+.
Awesome lecturer, really cares for his course. I strongly recommend for calculus.
I was not looking forward to this course because im an economist and find all math hard. But I found Dr. Covas teaching style amazing and he is so helpful I got B- it is A+ to me!! High recomendation for this instructor!
LOVED HIM! Very entertaining, Really dumbs down the material so everyone gets it. Throws some tricks in on tests so watch out. (He loves absolute values)
HE IS THE BEST!!!! LITERALLY PEOPLE NEVER TAKE MATH WITH ANY OTHER PROFESSOR!!!! :D
Very entertaining prof !
awesome prof
Best prof there is for math, have had 2 other profs for different math courses and this guy is hands down the best there is
THE BEST TEACHER! He somehow always gets the class interested and always keeps everybody in a good mood. What he gives you for homework is what you get on the tests and exam. Do it all and you'll get an easy A.
Ok, i understand if you have previously taken linear algebra before you could probably understand this guy, but for students who actually needed to learn new material this teacher was terrible. He was not easy to understand at all and often refused to answer questions. His tests were impossible, even our TA's said they would have failed.
I really started to hate this class. Intro to Lin. Alg. has alot of new terminology. This prof would throw in words not used in the textbook on a weekly basis. Ignored raised hands, very confusing explanations. The test questions were pretty tough. I owe everything to Gilbert Strang MIT intro go L.G. Would have failed without those videos.
Mr Cova is a very enthusiastic prof which got me motivated from the start. His classes are very lively with clear explanations. It would be perfect if he put his lectures notes on culearn.
Awesome. His use of language is beautiful. Very helpful and wants the absolute best for each of his students. Do the homework and you should be fine. If you can't do the homework, then go to office hours and be sure to go to class. Exam almost based completely on previous years.
Great math prof, I enjoyed this course and learnt a lot too. Dr Cova explains very clearly and cares about the students. Will try to take any course with him in the future.
He REALLY loves math and is extremely enthusiastic. Great use of language, however throws in terminology that isn't in the textbook and doesn't explain it (or does cryptically only once). He NEVER responds to emails so see him in person if help is needed. But overall, hilarious guy and funny lectures.
Cova was an awesome lecturer. His lectures were the highlight of my week. He has this enthusiasm and passion for what he's teaching it makes you want to learn. He is also very approachable and happy to help if you have any question. I would definitely take a class with him again.
Hilarious, helpful, passionate about math. Never boring, regardless of what he's teaching.
Great professor, actually enjoyed his class to death. Gives fairly easy tests considering the material and is awesome if you have extra questions or concerns about something. Highly recommended.
I enjoyed his class. He explains stuff using simple language. I highly recommend him.
Awesome teacher, I had 50's in first year calculus, but with RJ Cova as my prof I walked into the exam with an A. This is due to his exceptional teaching style, and his extensive knowledge of the subject.
Very funny guy. Great prof knows how to teach the material. In terms of the class the tests are super easy so not much to worry about.
Cova is the man. You go to lectures, and he'll explain the concepts beautifully. He'll even have some food references in lecture. He'll show you tips and tricks for the math problems. Do the problems in the book, and you'll be fine for his tests, which are basically all long answer. The final exam is basically like ones in previous years.
Cova is so hilarious. Uses crazy analogies to explain math.
Good prof, try to help students. Test and exam are very easy. Just do the homework and you will get an A easy.
Very easy to understand. Loves food and Twilight. Likes to reference movies.
Really entertaining lectures although if you're good at learning from the book attendance is not necessary to pass. Textbook is very clear
Cova's lectures are hilarious and are a pleasure to listen to, although sometimes the approach he takes isn't always clear, he is a fairly easy grader and his tests are fairly easy, the textbook is very helpful and teaches you everything you need to know for the course.
Rj is a great prof who is hilarious and knows what he is talking about. His test are pretty easy as long as you do the homework. Watch out for the exam, I did well but others didn't make sure to be prepared!
He is a great teacher that loves teaching. I like how he approaches teaching math , makes it fun. His tests are ok if you study .
Solid linear teacher if you pay attention. Funny, passionate guy.
RJ is one of the most interesting and funny profs I have had. He will make random Twilight references while explaining substitution by parts. It can be difficult to keep up with him in class, and he doesn't post slides, he does everything on the blackboard. However he does explain concepts very well.
A great prof would recommend.
Very easy-going and friendly with a good sense of humour. He teaches the material in a rather arbitrary and confusing fashion. His lectures can be confusing to follow in some occasions, but he uses various different approaches and is always willing to help a student when they're stuck.
Cova is fantastic; he's hilarious and makes the lectures much more enjoyable than they otherwise would be. For tests, if you understand the concepts and 'tricks' he shows you in class for solving different types of questions/problems, then you'll easily get 100% on his tests. He also spent a good amount of time reviewing for the final at the end.
Good luck with this class
Cova's funny and smart. He seems easy at the start because of this, but it was a downside. He didn't really teach the course; it was as if he expected us to all come in having studied the subject and done homework, so he'd teach harder things. Then he'd laugh about the easy stuff he didn't teach and give hard tests. You learn the course yourself.
Great prof, very fun and upbeat. Key to passing the course is doing the practice exams and related problems again and again and again.
Study the basics before you go to his class. If you don't you won't survive. I'd highly recommend avoiding.
Cova uses great real-world examples and tangible comparisons to illustrate perhaps abstract calculus ideas, such as funny food comparisons. He is very easy to understand, makes everything very clear (and enjoyable), and is eager to answer any questions. Just try, and you will succeed.
Great and funny professor. The tests were hard but the final was not bad. Attend his lectures since he doesn't post them online. Also don't forget about the desserts in the fridge.
Very funny guy, doesn't post notes so go to lectures. In class he just goes over examples and covers all the hard stuff, so if you can understand those you'll be fine. Not really teaching so much as demonstrating
I learned literally nothing from his class but I went to every lecture. I ended up learning everything the week before the exam from the textbook and people helping me. To be fair, I never did the homework except before the tests. His class is like a meal in his words: he starts with appetizer. His notes are handwritten and not well labelled.
Dr Cova is very knowledgeable and passionate about math. I am waiting for him to teach math 2004 but seems he is only teaching the first years.
One of my best courses in fall 2018; fun lectures with many examples with clear explanations. tests a little hard but everything covered in class. No complaints with prof Cova. Highly Recommended !!
Easy going prof, hard to understand at times because of his understanding of English.
Awful. Spends too much time trying to be funny in class that he misses teaching the actual material. Grossly unprepared for lectures, he's often changing the example halfway through and constantly making errors or confusing himself. Tests are fair but online assignments and quizzes don't match up with lecture material. This is going to wreck my GPA
Amazing professor. Generally hilarious and explains concepts very well. Sometimes his analogies or jokes are sort of weird but that's part of his charm. If you pay attention to what he says and copy the notes, I guarantee you'll do amazing! One of my favourite classes of all time for sure. Would take again 100%.
I really did not enjoy my class with Cova as the professor. I did well on tests and assignments but it required a lot of work and self teaching.I did not enjoy his teaching style, and I taught myself a lot of the course. He often had a lot of mistakes in his notes and students often had to correct him.
Really fun guy, and good teacher. His tests were straight forward and he made everything super clear. You're expected to do the homework and pay attention in class, but if you do that, you're golden.
A Really easy course. He explains it well and the tests are really short and easy
Hilarious teacher. No nonsense either, he clearly lays out what he expects from you in tests and exams.
Great prof, amazing lectures, be sure to take notes
Detailed lectures with some mistakes on examples. Very accessible outside of classes and very helpful. His lectures may not be the best but his office hours will provide you the best opportunity to learn from him. You will be able to reason with him for marks too. Awesome professor overall despite what some people would say.
This man is hands down the best professor I have ever had the pleasure having. Every lecture he explains the concepts exceptionally well, I cannot say enough good things about him. I have never left a lecture thinking "what the heck just happened?". His mannerisms are first-rate, grade A hilarious; he is a gem and a marvelous teacher.
very funny guy making the lectures very interesting to attend defineteley kept my attention for the semester and he made learning math not so bad
Well adjusted to online class delivery, speaks VERY slowly but that allows you to watch his hour lectures in half the time. Calm and thorough in his lectures. Makes mistakes, but quickly corrects them. Diversifies the grading material. Short tests, long assignments. Textbook is very helpful, although paying attention to lecture is often enough.
Cova is the best professor I've had at Carleton so far. He has a passion for the course, and is always entertaining in the lectures. He explains concepts in an entertaining way and is always open for out of class discussion. Clear grading criteria between assignments, tests, and exam. I hope I am able to take him again.
Pretty good prof. Wasn't a huge fan of how he taught the course in the online environment. Just prepared slides and talked about them. Very enthusiastic about the content and clearly knows what he's talking about. Would have loved to have had him in the not online environment!
This guy is the most soothing voices I've heard. If I watch his lectures at 1x speed its almost like listening to an ASMR video, I could literally fall asleep listening to this man in his lectures. All of the class is Asynchronous, leaving time to do what you need to. Overall, beast of a teacher, really good at explanations.
Professor Cova designed his course to be super accessible, provided a lot of sources, used the school platform to do the tests and quizzes, offered support throughout the course. Amazing facilitator!
useless prof
I had to take this course the instructor seems very sweet, but I had trouble learning in an online format and the online textbook did not help.
literally the most useless teacher ive ever had. his voice is so slow that I have to put him on 3x for him to sound normal. he's not very good at explaining anything, TA's are way better. Mylab is horrible too, I hate this class with all of my heart.
Seems like a nice guy, however the lecture videos were so boring and hard to watch. I think this class would have been a lot better in person.
Cova's lectures were okay (a little boring and VERY slow), but sometimes he would crack jokes (he calls different forms of equations "flavours" and the denominator "downstairs" which made me laugh). MyLab is a horrendous platform though. Textbook was only for MyLab, I didn't read it once. Exam was RIDICULOUSLY HARD. Would have ben better in-person.
Cons: - Very Slow - Makes many mistakes - Teaches very confusing - Does not reply emails (at least my emails wasn't replied by the instructor) - There were two parts in the final and first part of the final exam was not announced. Pros: - Attendance is not mandatory - Exams are easy
I have constantly had one question in my mind, why am I paying thousands of dollars in tuition when I literally can watch similar videos on youtube for free. Prof. Cova is also really really slow speaking, like you just cant watch him on 1x speed. There was not a single live lecture, all of the lectures were recorded in 2019.
Dr. Cova is a very caring and funny guy but his lectures are extremely boring due to the fact he talks extremely slow (literally in slow motion). You'd have to turn it up to 2x speed for it to sound normal. Also, get ready for weekly quizzes AND assignments (which are relatively easy once you figure out how to use the MyLab platform).
Has an amazing sense of humor and truly cares about the subject matter. That being said he's also insanely hard to reach outside of class, and once administered a test wrong and took 3 months to admit and correct the mistake after >10 emails from both myself and the school trying to correct him. Also watch him on 2x speed at a minimum.
Do all the homework he sets up in class and you will pass!
Do not miss class because the test problems are very similar to those solved in the lectures. TA was not very good.
Perhaps one of the funniest/most entertaining profs I've had. He has a really extravagant style of teaching which keeps you engaged, even for a subject like calculus. He always cracks jokes and really encourages you to visualize the problem. His tests/assignments are really similar to the textbook. Attend his class and you'll do well.
Very enthusiastic prof, great lectures. He illustrates the theory with applications in physics, worth attending class. If you follow his advice you will pass.
hes good and if u go to class u will pass, but I wish he posted his notes. Avoid skipping
If you go to class, you should be able to get a good grade. RJ Cova goes slow to make sure you understand the content, and also has hilarious stories to tell. Overall a really good prof for a challenging course like MATH 2004.
Possibly the best professor I have taken so far. Dr. Cova is not only an incredible gentleman but he also deeply cares about the learning experience of his students and makes sure to do that in a hilariousl and caring way. I wish he taught more classes in the BIT department if he would be able to, that would be very beneficial.
The class was great and the tests were fair, but the the majority of the final exam was on what we learned in the last week of class. His lectures are hard to follow and he teaches by projecting paper notes. He tells irrelevant jokes all the time. At least he was funny...
Cova Cova always makes the things harder unnecessarily. Explanations are boring and if you are learning a new thing I recommend you to learn it by yourself. Classes are super boring and the tests are trash. Good luck.
Skip class? You won't pass (Bring that tag back)
Don't
Very good prof, shows a lots of examples in class, the tests are fair. I recommend taking calculus with him.
Tests are WORTH A LOT, spends time on easy problems but speeds through harder problems. In class work and tutorial problems are scams nothing similar/related to tests.
amazing lectures provided with lots of examples! great for learning difficult concepts
I was dreading this course and put it to the end of my degree. If you have to take it, take it with him and peel the bandage off. Listen to this advice: Come to classes after looking at the material on youtube. Practice like hell for the first two tests. The last two are harder, but one is dropped. Dont be scared of the 50 percent final
Took this very late at night which did not help whatsoever, but he is a pretty chill guy and willing to help. First year of eng was a bit rocky for me which made that this class suffered the most out of it but if you study well for it you should be well more than fine
I retook this course after I got a D- in it previously, and Professor Cova was exceptional and explained the material very well.
This was one of my fav profs ever!! I would highly recommend to anyone, we were graded by in person quizzes (35%), assignments (25%), where the worst one of each is dropped and the final (40%). He is very funny and explains concepts really well, it made the 8:30am classes less annoying.
Before taking this course,I was terrified of taking math.I hadn't taken a math course since 11th grade and can barely do additions, but Professor Cova changed everything for me.His teaching is phenomenal, he's very funny, and he's always ready to help. For the first time in my life,I'll be getting a math grade above a C-, and for that, I thank him.
This professor was amazing! His course was easy to follow and he made calculus very fun and simple to understand. I am not usually someone who is good at math, but this prof was very helpful. The grading and questions are very fair and the examples done in class help a lot for the in person quizzes done every week. 10/10 recommend!!
Would not recommend.
Professor Cova is one of my favourite profs so far. He made calculus so fun and easy. I am someone who stresses so much over math, but his lectures actually gave me confidence. The weekly quizzes kept us in touch with the material. The final was not the easiest, but it was not entirely bad. Overall, he's an amazing prof ... definitely recommend.
I really liked this professor. He teaches slowly and tries to make sure that you understand. He's funny and his lectures are understandable and easy to follow, they used to help me a lot. The course can be difficult sometimes but as long as you attend lectures, ask questions, and really practice the assignment questions you should be good.
He is a good prof despite me hating the subject he teaches. His lectures were enjoyable and he was more than helpful during class time. I absolutely recommend him.
Decent prof, explains material fairly well. Tries to be funny during class to keep students engaged. 8 weekly quizzes, which were not hard + lowest one dropped. Final was mid difficulty though, and questions were ok, but were lengthy and time-consuming for me. Also gave a 2% bonus opportunity for the weekly online assignments.
Great teacher with clear and helpful lectures. Jokes a lot in class to keep students engaged. Be prepared to take notes in class though.
