Very mixed reaction from students. Either people understood his class or didn't. went overwork(which was easy). One serious paper to write and present. always tries to address student questions. Nice guy. a little serious.
i think he is a jolly good teacher!
Prof. Tello is easily one of the most intelligent professors I've had. His class is hard for those not truly equipped to look at anything philosopically. Also, he's hot as hell.
Hard ad hell and not hot at all, he's short
This guy should NEVER teach Ethics. He is a pompous, self-righteous man that cannot handle being questioned on ANYTHING, especially if he's wrong. He prefers "sheeple" instead of thinking students. Challenge him and watch your grade plummet. English is his second language, so don't expect him to understand your opinions. DON'T take this class.
Great teacher!
Prof. Tello is effing rad.
this was one of the most enjoyable classes I've ever taken.
I loved the class and him. fabulous. hard for me though, because i thought i was doing great until i got all my grades back as c's.
Prof. Tello is awesome and smart and totally adorable. It's easy to get a good grade if you pay attention during discussions. You don't even have to participate really. I didn't and I got a B

Tello was there to help you if you had questions about work. Always strived for class participation. The negative comments about him usually come from people who were not prepared for class and who didn't work hard enough and consequently got the bad gra
Professor Tello is, by far, my favorite professor. It is obvious that he knows above and beyond the information taught in the syllabus. I enjoy speaking up, because he values the opinions of his students. Great teacher--great class!
Brilliant but exacting teacher, expected participation and university-level performance. Available, caring and helpful. Helped me clarify my own ethics and write in Chicago style. Loaned me a book that made all the difference, Thinking and Writing about Philiosophy.
He is a bit difficult to understand and does not take kindly to those who may disagree with him. His opinion is always right. On a personal level, he really is a sweet man who tries to mantian personal relationships with students.
I took him two semesters. He is by far the best professor I have had. I could never miss a day of class because I was addicted to his lectures. Ethics is the BEST class. He challenges his students but really makes you think. Ethics should be a mandatory course for all college students because "the unexamined life is not worth living."
I really enjoyed Prof. Tello's class. I would have taken ethics with him if I'd had the chance. I would not call it an easy class for most, unless you are naturally bent toward philosphical thinking.
Not understanding at all. Short with answers
Prof. Tello is an incredibly gifted teacher with a fairly good grasp of his subject (that's considering that he is a PhD, you know).
Greatest teacher at Shasta College. He cares about his students to the point where he will go home a thing about what a student said during class, and return the next class period and explain further to make sure the student understood the material. Very professional, very understanding, very good at what he does. Changed my life, try yours.
Took both logic and philosophy with him. Enjoyed both. A great teacher, and passionate about his subject. Acquired a few favorite philosophers from his philosophy class.
Outstanding Professor. Be ready to work hard and be challenged.
I dropped after 1st day. His attitude- short answers, lack of understanding, & arrogance is something I won't deal w/for a bs gen ed class, esp when I'm taking another 15 units of chem, physics, and calc. I wanted Logic- I've NO interest in Eng 1B other than it has a cheaper textbook & I might spend less time getting through that "golden 4" hoop.
He's a solid teacher. The work is very difficult, but I felt like I was ahead of the curve the whole time, thanks to him.
He thinks his opinion is always right, hard to understand, boring lectures (drones, struggles w/ words), grades unfairly, doesn't encourage discussions with other students, & will flat out tell you that your opinion is wrong. Otherwise nice, friendly guy.
I've taken every single class he has to offer. Great teacher. Great person. Life changing experience.
If you have absolutely any interest in philosophy, this is the guy! I can see that people who don't like philosophy will dislike the class. Otherwise, his class is incredibly engaging, interesting, and compelling. The only class I've been able to argue with my professor and not get in trouble!
Great teacher. Hard, but really grabs your attention and makes you want to do well in his class. In Phil 7 you have to understand that he wants you to learn concepts and ideas from different philosophers, generally not your own opinions.
Great professor extremely intelligent and truly cares about his students' education. He is not arrogant, he simply attempts to correct student misunderstanding of the philosophical concepts and does not force his opinion either.
Tello is an outstanding professor, truly. A lot of these reviews say he is pompous and forces his opinion down your throat. This is ABSOLUTELY not true. Those who left such comments are those who are too close minded and ignorant to challenge their own beliefs, which is a crucial part of his classes. I took every class from him, he changed my life.
I think Professor Tello is a great teacher. He is respectful of everyones opinions and does a great job clearly explaining the not so clear text we read. I think the class is definitely a challenge to keep up but taught well.
My absolute favorite teacher so far! Goes out of his way to help you understand everything, accurately explains all views, has a great sense of humor. Class is easy if you do your reading. Hardest part of his class is staying awake, as he mostly lectures, and the material is complex, especially in his strong accent.
Very helpful. Dynamic lectures. He was also very understanding and friendly. He would even let the idiots (who would often miss the point of the discussion) ramble on, and somehow make their question more relevant by a twist of words. All in all, I think it was an interesting and challenging course worth taking.
Professor Tello loves what he does and takes it seriously. He explains the concepts very well but will occasionally go a little too fast on his powerpoints. He's always willing to answer questions and his knowledge of the subject enables the students to keep their facts straight. As long as you study for the tests, you should do okay. Great teacher
He's an extremely intelligent and patience instructor.
Helpful teacher and expert philosopher. He will never cease to illustrate his points, even using these hilariously bad drawings on his white board. He also has a beautiful and pleasant accent. And, honestly, I find him somewhat attractive for an older man. It's a good class.
Be warned. If you are not used to studying 12 hours per week, forget passing. His tests are more in depth, than the what the text book offers, barely have enough time to complete exams. Difficult to understand, per his accent. He doesn't follow the textbook closely. I learned more from the CD, than the book or him. BE SURE TO BUY THE CD!!
He seems friendly and helpful at first but he is actually convinced his views and agenda can't be wrong. Students are uncomfortable with some of his extreme "out of context" examples. Fast on pp...short biased responses. If you present your argument he is only "sympathetic" to his! Not much freedom of opinion nor emotional health. Drop or W asap
He is a good teacher. I was scared to take another Philosophy class because of a bad experience at another college but this teacher is very easy to follow. You do have homework every day but without the homework exercises I would be lost entirely. I do recoment him if you're looking to learn something but if you just want an easy A go elsewhere.
If you expect an instructor to lecture this class is not for you. His lectures consist of going over the homework only, do not buy the Shasta College book, buy the regular logic book. Make sure you use the disc that comes with the book or you will be lost completely.
I took 2 of his classes in 2008 when I was working on my AA. He has lots of patience and was willing to spend time after class to discuss questions further. I'm now working on my PhD and realize what a truly great instructor he is. He's not easy, but he is very good. I appreciate him more with each passing year!!
While Dr. Tello is a far from easy teacher, he is a great instructor. Plan on reading and studying after every class meeting and be sure to pay attention in class, and his class won't be too bad. There are only 3 test, but they are worth an ungodly amount of points. I greatly enjoyed this class and would recommend taking it if you're interested.
Well constructed curriculum, fairly closely following the textbook. Instructor is confident and well thought-out. CAUTION: some students not used to logical, constructive dialogue will register this as "pushy" or "arrogant" but is not; is actually a useful introduction to critical thinking (not taught that much in schools these days).
As long as you show up and take good notes it isn't that difficult of a class. I'ts very interesting and makes you think a lot. After the first test, though, almost everyday was an unannounced quiz (so go over your notes before class).
any students thinking about taking this class would be wise to reconsider. the grade system he uses dose not accurately represent the effort you put in. he doesn't explain things well and its hard to understand him. if you care about your schooling dont take his class.
What a wonderful class, to those who are looking for an easy course move on. If you care about your life and others around you. you can greatly broaden your views of life and find out much more about yourself and what you are capable of. Dr. Tello is a remarkable man and his efforts are well noted in his class I am forever great-full for his time.
He is very nice and funny at times, the content is hard to grasp because there is just so much! He has a thick accent so some words he says are hard to understand when he talks fast. But left than that, he is very knowledgable and a good teacher to have!
Tello is a great professor. His class is definitely a challenge but if you do ALL of the homework, go to class and take good notes, you should do fine. Doing the homework, while important for your grade, is more about understanding the concepts before class. This is key for his class. I recommend Tello! But just be prepared to work for your grade.
Really boring class but it is logic after all. Do the homework and you should be getting A's on tests.
this class was very tough, but I learned a lot. what I learned changed my perspectives and the way I think. he is a great professor because he is very helpful, funny, nice and very knowledgeable. if I had a chance, I would definitely take his class again.
I took Phil7 with Dr. Tello and it was one of the most difficult things I've ever done. I aced every test, but put in around 30-40 hours of study time for each one. If you work hard, you will excel. He loves teaching and it shows. He can tell if you're putting in work and will help you outside of class. Don't expect to come in here and cruise by.
Professor Tello changed my life, it is simple as that. I took his Intro class a decade ago and his words have never left me, nor have his teachings. I became an avid student of philosophy because of his lectures and his perspective. He will challenge anyone to defend their argument and in that he is respected and esteemed. Read, listen, and learn.
The content of the class was very challenging. The teacher made things every more difficult by using two different websites, blackboard and dashboard. The tests are nothing like the HW. He makes things due at 3 in the afternoon on random days. Horribly organized content. He makes things due on holidays.
By far the hardest class I have ever taken. Perhaps it's because i'm not a PHIL major, but I found a lot of the material so dull. But I must say that at times the class was extremely thought provoking. Be prepared to try to understand complex ideas, while also trying to understand the professor through his accent. Which of course is not his fault.
Dr. Tello is one of the most respected professors at Shasta College. His course is difficult and will challenge your ability to study. Exams consist of one to three small essays on extremely intensive material from the likes of Hobbes, Kant, and Mill. He does not push any views. He presents the information and challenges your ability to retain it.
Professor Tello was the best professor I had in all of my college careers (I have a PhD) - NOT the easiest. You MUST take good notes and ask good questions. He is willing to give you breaks on the test if you ask before the test. (Will you tell us exactly what to study for the test? Will you give us some extra credit questions?) He's thorough!
His online course is really confusing at first. His assignments were due at 3pm on Mon/Thurs and he has multiple websites where things are due. I would sometimes get through assignments & think I was done just to find out there are 5 more. Sometimes you will have 20-30 multiple choice "quizzes" to do. I would recommend online over in class however.
He has a really strong accent, which makes him very difficult to understand at times. There's a lot of reading, and a whole lot of note taking. Would not recommend this course, unless it's your specific major.
His thick accent, on top of him speaking in a low tone , while your trying to take notes (which have yet to help), at the same time he's questioning you on the homework, then expecting your to remember the class discussions for the test, and throwing around terms that we went over 1 time makes it REALLY hard to learn. My sentence format is most HW.
mind numbing curriculum. extremely difficult to retain information without access to it. outside of assigned readings no continuity in material, no access to slides, no canvas, is not graded like an intro class more like upper division. never taking a philosophy class again.
Very test heavy class. Theres no room for error, when something is due ITS DUE literally no exceptions. This is an upper level class, should be an honors. It is very difficult material wise and test wise. You have to work extremely hard to get a good grade here.
I went into this class thinking it would be discussion based but its very lecture heavy. There are about 2-4 philosophy exerts to read each week from famous philosophers and many are quite difficult to understand. Prof. Tello doesnt use canvas or post the PowerPoints online, which makes this class that much more difficult.
Where to begin. So first off he comes off as helpful, but he is really no help at all. His answers are short and confusing. He does NOT give enough time to do assignments and they are due at 3:00 on WORKING DAYS! And for 24 hours! People have lives, jobs, kids, other courses and he doesn't care! I was a strait A student until this class!
Tello is an extremely tough professor and if you take his class with a full schedule it will be one of the hardest things to do. His tests are extremely hard and confusing and you have to grant him access to your microphone and your camera during exams. He has assignments due on both canvas and a dashboard that you have to make sure to do DAILY.
I took this class a little while ago, but Tello has remained one of my favorite professors. I took his Ethics and Logic class this semester because of it. Hes a good professor but dont walk in thinking that the class is going to be an easy A.
Professor Tello is one of the best teachers at Shasta College. His classes are difficult but if you show up and do the work you will pass. He doesn't accept late work but he always offers extra credit to allow anyone to catch up. He genuinely cares about his students and he is consistent and fair with everyone. Difficult but rewarding. Worth taking
If you are an online student, do not take his class unless you are ok with a 3pm deadlines. While he responds quickly, he is not helpful or understanding at all. I have taken several online courses and have never had such a difficult experience. I would have given him a zero if I could
Professor Tello was one of the best professors I have had at Shasta College. He challenges his students to think and really wants them to succeed. The course material can be difficult but he presents it in an accessible and lively manner. I like being inspired to think outside the box, and Tello encourages exactly this.
If you learn best when your are given clear, organized information, then this is not the Professor you want to teach you. He is often confusing, indirect, and very long-winded in both his lectures as well as when students ask questions. He does not give straight logical answers. Its hard to prepare for his exams.
This teacher is extremely difficult, belittles you if you don't get the answer right, and will embarrass you in front of the class. He does not care if you are struggling and if you tell him you are, he says "just do the work".
If you're looking for an easy class to slack off in and barely show up to, don't take this one. It's challenging, thought-provoking, and an excellent way to get prepared for a higher level institution in the future. Requires strong study habits and time management skills. Prof Tello is wonderful and helps foster meaningful in class discussion.
I literally hate my life when I'm in this class. The information is so complex, especially for an introductory course. I can barely understand him and his quizzes are rarely understandable. He does not like to work around missing class, which sucks. He expects so much on a single exam, you have to know some no-name philosopher better than yourself
Prof Tello is actually the worst professor I have ever experienced, he acts like he makes everything so clear in lecture when in reality you WILL NOT be able to understand almost any topic he discusses, ask questions and you will get an even more confusing answer. Also he does not post grades and he has so many pop quizzes on topics from weeks ago.
WORST PROFESSOR PERIOD. His assignments are due at 3pm which is unlike any other course. His exams are proctored so he videotapes you and has acess to your microphone. (Very unsettling if you ask me) And to prepare for exams, you better have a week of no obilgations. AND after all that studying, you MIGHT pass the test. I highly don't Reccomend.
I LOVED this class! Professor Tello is knowledgable and passionate. You will need to attend classes because his slides are not available online but, honestly, I didn't want to miss any. The class discussions are super engaging. The grading policy is a bit stringent; however, he is good about clearly laying out his grading criteria.
This professor is one of the WORST!! His assignments are due at 3 pm which is hard for full time working adults, I emailed him about this issue and all he had to say was work on the assignment earlier. He's a tough grader and his assignments are hard. would not recommend taking any of his classes.
I have a lot of respect for Tello. His lecture slides and explanations are always thought provoking and informative, the material in the courses are mostly enjoyable reads on relevant topics and he really tries to set you up for success in his classes. I have taken almost all the philosophy classes offered at Shasta college with Tello for that.
I honestly really enjoyed Prof. Tello and his class. The material is challenging, but he gives you ample tools to understand it and encourages you to ask questions. He is a professor that WANTS you to pass. Lots of assignments/quizzes, but you have a solid week to prepare for/do them. Study, read the material, ask questions, and you WILL pass.
This class is very straight forward but is very difficult. The reading was easy but there were about 5 tests for every couple of pages you would read. Although there was an insane number of quizzes there was only 3 exams and they were worth your whole grade. Fail one and you're done for.
I have the utmost respect for this professor. Yes, you will have to read a lot, and think very deeply about the subject matter, but if you're passionate about the cultivation of your own mind, then you will benefit from his lectures. Work hard and you will learn to think clearly and concisely about matters that most people neglect to consider.
Tello is clear and conscience with his lectures. His Phil 7 course consists of mainly reading, lectures on the reading, commentaries on the reading, 8 quizzes, and two exams. This class is good for someone who wants to learn a variety of moral teaching from various philosophers but not good if you have little time to sit down the read the readings.
One of the most difficult profs at Shasta, but worth it. Assigns a lot of material to read through, but also provides lectures that cover the major themes of different texts. Would recommend to anyone interested in philosophy who wants a course with a similar difficultly to that of a UC or CSU level humanities course.
His class was one of the hardest I took at Shasta College by far (and I took the calc series), but it makes for the perfect transition from CC to a UC or CSU if you're a social science major. The advice he gives for reading difficult and lengthy writings has been really helpful to me even at Cal. Would recommend if you want to challenge yourself.
Approachable. 3 credit hours, felt like 5 worth of work- do not take if hard science major. 30 philosophers over 17 weeks- not an introduction course as advertised. You will be tested on all 30. Only take this course if you ARE a philosophy major. His interpretation is the only valid interpretation. I will never take another philosophy class, sad.
Go to office hours! Dr. Tello wants his students to succeed. Yes, this is a difficult class so make sure you are serious about it. It maybe hard to absorb everything, but GO TO OFFICE HOURS!!!
Whatever you do, do not take a class with Tello. He is the worst prof I have ever dealt with.
This was my first PHIL class and it was very challenging for me. The concepts took a little while to grasp, but I got most of them eventually. You do read quite a bit in the textbook and you will use it to reference as you complete assignments and exams. Overall, Professor Tello is a good teacher and he helped me a lot at the beginning of class.
Very clear lectures, makes discussions exciting, can go into depth on any questions you have.
This is probably one of my favorite classes I took at Shasta College and I'm not even a humanities major. There are a lot of readings and you must come to class prepared for discussion. Professor Tello does a good job at explaining the normative ethical theories. He even made Kant understandable. I took this class while taking Calc and Physics 4A.
Assigned and graded assignments fairly. The book he assigned for my Logic class was a good choice, it wasn't too difficult to understand the material and take notes. My class was online so I didn't interact with him that much, but he was available for questions if I needed to ask them. I will be taking another class with him next semester.
The fact that this professor has any bad reviews is shocking to me. It speaks to the laziness of some individuals who just want to cram some homework and not learn anything. This man is the greatest professor I've ever had the privilege to learn from. Do not expect an easy class. Expect to see life differently.
Literally the worst prof I have ever taken. He is impossible to follow in class and his assignments are confusing. He talks down to you like you are a child and then tells you he is giving you "good feedback". A friend of mine who took the class with me was given a much higher grade for the exact same assignment that we did together.
Tello is the best teacher I have ever had! He has great dialogue about the subjects you read, he really cares about what he teaches. I have taken every class he teaches!
By far the worst class Ive ever taken. I am a 4.0 student and do very well in school. I had to drop the class because I was failing. I studied for hours, had numerous pages of notes and still failed the test. The tests were awful. The content in the class is horrible. I would not recommend this class to anyone. Take another class if you can.
This course is so complex you dont even know how to form questions to ask about the material being taught Quizes and homework are easy, when you start to think you finally understand the material, you take an exam worth your grade that doesnt cover what was taught. I am convinced "Professor" Tello designed his course to set students up for failure.
Please don't be mislead by many of Professor Tello's reviews: he is an incredible teacher. Many of his reviews claim that his subject material is too difficult to understand, but that is the nature of the beast with philosophy as a subject. You will not find a prof who can make this subject more accessible to his students as Tello! Amazing class!
Professor is nice and knowledgeable about the subject. I thought it would be way to get some easy English credits, but, this class ended up being extremely difficult, and is closer to a math class than it is an English class, which is something I wish I knew going in. Be prepared to do a lot of reading and studying.
Tello is the only philosophy instructor at Shasta College so if you have to take the class you are kind of out of luck. Very firm in his own beliefs and not very open to criticism or opinions that don't directly agree with him. He once said that physicists make terrible philosophers, I am a physics major so that was the final straw for me.
It's amazing that anyone would have a single good thing to say about this teacher. I'm so surprised he has mixed reviews. In all my years as a student, I've only encountered one teacher as bad as him. Tough, stubborn grader who thinks all students want to do is devote time to his material and his material only. DO NOT RECOMMEND!!
What ever you do, do not take a class from Dr. Tello. He is just bad.
Hands down the least engaging course I've taken. The instructor had us read text and regurgitate it's contents for months, stacking it among other texts we had to read and regurgitate information from. Very little actual philosophical discussion, the class is almost entirely "remember x, no notes." Uses Respondus, which is kernel-level malware.
Possibly the harshest grader I've ever come across. If you are not 100% accurate in interpreting what a philosopher is saying, you're wrong. Nothing I studied mattered on the tests or quizzes because it never aligned with what was on the quizzes.
Incredibly lazy professor. Unclear directions. Grades assignments arbitrarily. Would not recommend taking his classes if you can avoid it.
