She says her class is not like high school yet forces people with laptops to the back if the room, lots of ego issues, as though her status as a uni prof elevates her above her students. She gave us a quiz last night and one of the answers wasn't even discussed in the material she showed us beforehand. That's not helpful in a first year class!
rana is an outstanding professor. her lectures are great and encourages interesting dialogue. her professionalism can be mistaken for something more cynical from the immature crowd. well worth taking her class.
prof had ego issues at first but calmed down mid semester. after the ego issues were gone i found her to be wonderfully helpful and insightful. she is very passionate about the subject and encourages memorable discussions.
Totally interesting prof who made the class worth coming to. Her examples are sometimes a little bit crazy, but she make the (sometimes really hard) material pretty easy to understand. Pretty easy marker, but you need to hand stuff in on time (and use staples!). Best Philosophy course I've had at Langara or at UBC.
Do not take this class unless you can write a midterm with 20 multiple choice and 2 essays in 90 minutes. Also she does not prepare you well for her exams so I would avoid taking ethics with her because she does not treat it like an introductory course.
Best prof I've seen at Langara. She really knows what she's talking about. The kind of prof that doesn't flatter you by making you seem smart, but scares you by making you realize how little you know - ie the good kind of prof.
Tough as nails and smart. Knows the material backwards and forwards. Doesn't humour incorrect ideas or rambling students which might put off some but I loved it because we didn't waste time on unimportant class discussion. There's no faking it in this class. You either know the material or you don't.
Rana Ahmad is an awesome Prof. She's patient and helpful, and her lectures are engaging and thought-provoking. She not only teaches us the critical thinking concepts, but also how to apply them to daily real life events.
do not take this class . do not. it will harm ur gpa very badly. Her lectures aren't bad, it's interesting. However, marks are only based on 2 papers, a midterm and a final. Midterm + Final same layout. 20-30 Multiple choice and 2 argumentative essays within 90 mins. Can you do it? no ? do not take it. broke 5 pencils becus of that.
Really smart but extremely hard class. Would not recommend.
Calls people out in class, extremely hard material, tough grader, crazy hard tests, makes you feel stupid, she is smart though!!!!
She is extremely slow in her lectures. It is super easy to sleep in class. She literally just continues rambling with no substance whatsoever. The grading is clear. Two 20% Midterms, one 20% presentation, 10% in-class presentation, and a 30% final exam. She marks very hard on essays. She is super critical on essays. Hard marker.
Intro to Knowledge had no papers, just a series of tests similar to high school. Each test covered 3-4 chapters, usually mc and 1-2 written answers. Final was not cumulative. Most of the information used during the lecture was based off the text, but there would be additional information discussed during lectures that may be on the test.
I would advise avoiding her class. If you have to, don't miss a single class. 90% of your grade is from tests. One of her essay questions was on something she mentioned in 1 class that was not in the book. So if you missed that class you failed the entire test. Take great notes, and make note of what she says she likes, she will put it on a quiz
Dr. Ahmad is exceptional, she's tough - duh* it's Philosophy NOT FINGER PAINTING! Use your brain, participate and read the assigned readings you can get at the least a B+ Dr. Ahmad is fair and is there to help, all you need to do is work at it and go see her if you don't understand, that's what they are there for -- it's tough... WELCOME TO LIFE!
Dr. Ahmad is extremely knowledgable, but can be slightly condescending at times, which can make her seem unapproachable. You need to go to her office hours anyways! I made the mistake of feeling too shy and that's not really an option for this class. The readings are long, there are 2 group projects (which I enjoyed), and hard exams!! Go to class!
Don't take her class just for credit. This was the first philosophy class I ever took, and I found it extremely challenging. She is brilliant. She will force you to come up with stronger arguments, and she is not one to hold back on criticism. If you're serious about the subject, I very much recommend Dr. Ahmad. Her class changed the way I reason.
She is one of the smartest people I've ever met. Her lectures are amazing. BUT she makes you read and summarize each chapter in the book before she gives us the lecture about it. Which makes the class very tough. She makes you think and opens your mind. Can also be a tough grader. Overall... great teacher.
If you're into philosophy, definitely take her course. She's extremely knowledgeable and gives great lectures. Her midterms are tough, but fair. Don't be afraid to ask questions if you don't follow along, she'll be sure to answer them clearly.
Mixed feelings on this professor. Her lectures were engaging but I hate the way she often twists and misrepresents facts to make a point. A lot of marks are from participation so make a point to say something or ask a question every class. Also, check the course web site - one bonus assignment, worth 5%, was posted with 3 days' notice!
Dr. Ahmad is the consummate philosophy professor. She will challenge you to evolve your thought process regarding everything in life. If you like to think about things deeply, you will enjoy taking a course with her. Expect two midterms and a final. Participation and attendance count for marks. Don't worry too much about grammar; ideas matter most.
Rana is a passionate and intelligent professor. Her lectures are clear and concise without taking anything away from the course material. She can be tough, but you earn every grade you get with her. I recommend her to anybody that truly has an interest in learning philosophy.
Awesome prof who made me want to take more Philosophy courses at Langara. She's funny as hell, but also really knows her stuff. Some people I took the class with said she was a hard grader, but honestly if you do the reading you'll probably be fine. Yeah, you have to buy the book and read it. Shocker, eh?
She doesn't provide power points for her lectures which makes it difficult to follow along in class. She also doesn't respond to emails either. Half the class had to redo first assignment because she did not provide clear instructions. Exams are very difficult!! Doesn't feel like an introductory course.
tests are hard.
exams are cumulative and extremely time crunched. 2 argumentative essays + 20-30 multiple choice in 1.5 hours (she doesnt narrow down what will be tested either). Difficult class to begin with. She tests on lecture stuff, would help if she gave powerpoint notes. Power tripper, got mad that someone called her by her first name rather than Dr. Ahmad.
Most interesting prof I've ever had. Would definitely take her again!!!
Dr. Ahmad is fantastic! Her personality is fantastic & she's extremely articulate. It's not an easy class, no, but she's an incredible prof. Take her if you want to be inspired.
Rana is an extremely passionate prof. At first, she seems very daunting, but I think you'll soon realize that's just her passion. She is quite strict on her essay marking, but not in terms of grammar -- more in terms of structure, and layout. If you enjoy debates and being challenged, you should take her class!
She is the best choice for Logic, but you do have to put in work for the class almost everyday. She does assign tons of hw from the textbook to practice, but she does go over every question in class. She does get frustrated if the class doesn't do the assignment so don't get surprised if you do poorly on the exams. 2 midterms and a final.
The best course I ever took at Langara. This totally changed the way I look at the world and think about, well, everything. The content is mind-blowing, but doing Philosophy doesn't mean just writing about what you feel. So yeah, if you take this awesome course, you've got to read, you've got to think hard, and you've got to write smart!
Truly my top favourite professor at Langara. She is one of the most intelligent individuals I have encountered; she would have also made a fantastic and successful lawyer. At first she may come off as unapproachable but if you are truly interested in the subject matter she will give you clear and deep thoughtful explanations. Shes really charming!
She was my favourite prof at Langara, and I miss here now that I'm at UBC. She was super-clear with all her explanations, even when it was very complicated theories. I learned a lot, not just about philosophy, but about how to write good essays for all university classes. HIghly recommended!
The epitome of tough-but-fair. She has very high expectations and takes no bull. She won't let anyone get away with sloppy thinking. I had to work for every percent of my grade, but nothing felt unfair or unreasonable.
It was my first time taking philosophy I really enjoyed her class. Highly recommended.
I would highly recommend her to anyone thinking of taking Philosophy 1102 at Langara. The class was very interesting if you put the work into it from day 1. However, she goes at a reasonable pace and one missed class may leave you far behind. She is very friendly and respectful, unlike most professors. 4/5
Dont miss her class
This was a tough class, a lot harder than I was expecting. Really more like math or coding than anything else. But Dr. A was super helpful and did a really good job of explaining the material and going over difficult concepts so that we could understand. She even managed to make me laugh with her crazy examples. Killer class, great prof!
This class was a lot tougher than I thought it would be, and some of the material kicked my ass. This isn't artsy-fartsy "talk about your feelings" stuff. It really IS more like math or writing code. But Prof Ahmad did a great of explaining everything in a super-clear way and answering everybody's questions (even the really stupid ones).
The best instructor in philosophy depatment ..i wanna take again her classes ..
One of the best teachers at Langara, and the best Philosophy prof. She's really clear and manages to explain complicated things in a way anybody can understand if you put some effort into it. Like others said, Ahmad likes to use crazy weird examples, but not everybody gets that she's being funny. Some people have no sense of humor.
She is incredibly intelligent and very clear and concise. I loved taking her class(1101) and catered my schedule around her Logic class (1102) next semester so I can take another class with her. She is very respectful and tells you what you need from the get-go. You definitely have to put in the effort. Tough class, but worth it.
I really enjoyed taking the class with her, and if I ever get the chance to take another class with her I will definitely would. I learned a lot from the course. Also, I enjoyed most of the lectures.
My favorite professor at Langara! Professor (or Doctor!) Ahmad is engaging and funny, she makes Philosophy fun even when it's really complex and challenging. You have to be ready to read some pretty dense and dry stuff, but it's not that bad once you get into the habit. Prof. Ahmad also helped me a lot with my writing skills. A+
This class was a LOT harder than I thought it would be. Trust me folks, philosophy isn't just thinking about one hand clapping and other weird stuff: it's demanding and strict. But Doctor Ahmad helped make even the difficult stuff really interesting, and really, really relevant. She's also the funniest prof at Langara.
Fantastic prof! Totally agree that Philosophy is a lot harder than I thought it would be. Doctor (don't call her "Miss"!) Rana Ahmad made it all pretty clear, though. Good course, but not super-easy.
Fantastic prof. I've had her for a bunch of Philosophy courses, and she really puts a lot of thought and energy into preparing her classes. You'd better do the readings and be ready to talk, but if can do that you'll be totally fine. A super nice lady too.
Loved the courses I took with her at Langara. She makes Philosophy interesting and relevant to your life. She's a serious professor, and she expects students to do some work. Read a bit, participate in class, and you'll get a lot out of your time with her. Two thumbs up.
Rana is a very interesting professor. I dont necessarily get the best grades in her classes but I get a lot out of them. She typically does 2 midterms instead of an essay or project which I find easier than a take home project. Keep up with the textbook and take note of what she puts on brightspace
A fantantastic and kind professor. I found the course hard because I'm international student, but the material was soooo interesting, and Dr. Ahmad was engaging and full of passion. I hope to take another course with her soon
took her class a while ago but I had to drop it after the first midterm because of how stressed out I was with her and this class... she is nice but I feel as though she EXPECTS way too much from you, lots of reading and make sure you engage yourself and listen in class... or else..
Rana doesn't test you to see if you know the problems, she puts so many questions into a test so no one has time, and than blames the students for not being fast enough even thou they spent the past 3 weeks preparing. She is also not humble nor easily approachable. One good thing is you will study so hard that you will not forget the material.
Tests are jam packed with hard questions & she doesn't give you enough time to finish & acts like you should already know everything the introductory class. Gives tons of hard/unnecessary questions she didn't do in class During the final few tests, almost ALL of the class didn't finish because she gave too many questions & she got mad at everyone!
Tough? Yeah. Mean-looking? Yeah. Makes you work? Absolutelly. At the end of the semester, however, you leave confident in what you know and confident in what you don't. She is direct with what she syas, all which she can back up; she's clear with instructions and expectations. All around, you know what you'll be doing. It's on you simply to do it.
Super. Awesome. Instructor. She is one of my favourite instructors at Langara. Her lectures are intriguing, she cares about her students' progress, and she makes you work. Philosophy is not an easy subject, but she makes it interesting and easier to understand. Would definitely recommend taking her, as long as you're not looking for an easy A.
Maybe the best professor I had at Langara. Super funny and interesting, she makes even dry technical stuff understandable. Some of her examples are hilarious because of her zany sense of humor. She talks tough about the assignments and exams, but actually a pretty easy marker.
Like other people have said, an awesome teacher who makes the material interesting and RELEVANT. The three Phil classes I took with her were worth more than all the other classes I took at Langara. Gonna miss you and your weird sense of humor, Dr. A!
Dr. Ahmad is a fantastic Philosophy teacher. Out of the couple philosophy courses I took at Langara, I would say I got the most out of her class. She makes the material interesting and understandable. Her lectures are engaging and fun. Her grading is fair and the grading criteria is clear. Would take her again for sure.
A really great instructor who was engaging when the class was f2f at first, she also made the transition easy on students in March and April. I was really struggling with the whole online thing, and I totally appreciate Doctor Ahmad being cool about stuff and not doing things live. I had had in other Phil courses, and shes really good.
Took enviro ethics with Dr. Ahmad and absolutely loved it! Captivating lecturer and very accessible outside of class. Tough course but super gratifying and much easier with a bit of advice during her office hours. Course covers most major arguments and theories around how humans should relate to the environment, relevant and eye-opening
The rudest professor I have ever had. She does not give straight answers when asked questions. She is condescending & belittling towards students. She is unapproachable & arrogant. She marks essays like an English prof despite making horrendous grammatical mistakes in her questions. She made an interesting premise for a course into a nightmare.
I feel unlucky to have such a good subjct with her. She is not kind. She just puts about 25 mins lectures. Her classical starting sentnce for the lectures is I wont talk much because the readings are straightforward. If they are so so, why are we here then?!! She changd the grading weights at the end of the smstr. A great unmotivator. Awful!
Avoid this prof. Try Johns for Logic or Browne for Ethics instead. Arrogant and unwilling to admit when she's wrong. She makes many errors but we do not get to see our test results so lose marks for her mistakes. Rude and condescending to students. Unapproachable. Unfair tests. I did well due to prior background; if you do not have that, you won't.
Enjoyed this course as much as any other this fall. The whole online learning situation is awful, but Dr. Ahmad made it work: her lectures were short, focused and really helpful. I had a couple of questions in Nov., went to her Zoom office hour and got lots of good help. I had to study a lot, but tests were pretty easy.
Fascinating material and very good teacher. Dr. Ahmad was on top of things and made life easy for her students with clear expectations and solid, short pre-recorded lectures. The whole course was pretty painless and fairly easy. There's a bit of heavy reading you have to do, but papers are short and exams no-brainers.
Loooved the recorded lectures we could listen to at our pace whenever we wanted: Dr. Ahmad hit the sweet spot with extra information that helped us understand what we were reading in the book without overwhelming us. Definitely the best online class I took at Langara in Fall 2020.
I think afew of the guys in her classes might have a problem with a woman professor explaining things to them; some of the comments on here are over the top and just not true. Professor was always very clear, very helpful, and really nice with me me, and I took many courses with her.
Buy the textbook, then READ the textbook! Otherwise you won't really know what's going on. If you read ahead a bit, Dr. Ahmad's lectures are extremely helpful and incredibly clear. Before writing an assignment, buy the textbook, then--that's right--READ the textbook. Once you figure what she wants, her essays and tests are actually very easy.
Dr. Ahmad is the best professor I've had. She has this way about her I love and respect. She is an incredibly intelligent woman and I have never been more engaged. Her grading was clear, she told us exactly what we needed to do to succeed. Class discussions were fun - she will question you and your beliefs and some people weren't prepared for that.
MY CONCERN ABOUT HER CLASS ONLINE IS THAT SHE ONLY USES AUDIO AND A BORING-NOT-SO-HELPFUL POWERPOINT SLIDES. It's so hard to take notes since the slides do not contain the important information. Also, she speaks so fast. It makes me sleepy doing her lectures since there's no video.
This was the most interesting course I ever took! It blew me away and made me realize I didn't know ANYTHING about AI. Professor Ahmad was a a breath of fresh air. She's passionate about the topic, and her enthusiasm makes me want to take more of courses and just more philosophy courses in general.
Online learning this year was generally pretty awful, but professors like Rana understand that and don't make students do all sorts of crazy, useless little things. The course was simple and straightforward. She made the material as interesting as it can be in this format. She's great in person, and handled the online class really well.
Doctor Ahmad is a great, engaging prof in real life. Her online course wasn't as interesting because her lectures were canned and there was no back-and-forth between her and the students, but she was still SUPER, SUPER CLEAR about everything. She makes complicated things easy to understand, in real life or online. Highly recommended.
Rana Ahmad entered my Langara Phil 1105 Biomedical Ethics and stated, "I will not enter this classroom at Langara and stoop to the low standards of this college as I primarily teach at UBC and expect you to be held to the university level." As this class was a college class, she failed me by 1% under the required grade. Hard grader and rude to all.
I was ambivalent about this class at first, but after a packed year of online Zoom classes, I now appreciate what a great job Dr. A did. She was super-clear about requirements and expectations from Day 1, and made the whole course easy to follow. She was realistic about the work and marking, and made things interesting. Super nice person!
She is a very tough grader and her exams are tough as well. The content of the course and her way of explaining is clear however, she is very professional. do not take the course with her if you want to increase your gpa.
Words can't describe how much I enjoyed her class, time flies at her class we didn't need break at all, because we had great class discussions every time and she encourage everyone to participate, I learned everything at the class and barely needed to study for exams , exams are just the same stuff we talked in the class def take with her again!
Super fun class where we had fund talking about a whole lot of interesting things and then relating them to serious philosophy. Dr. Ahmad is great at taking stuff from the news to make Philosophy come alive. You *do* have to do some reading and you need to proofread your assignments (hard for *me* to do :-), but it's not a hard class at all.
She is the best just that I can't describe her better she is an amazing professor you will enjoy and love philosophy.Definitely I recommend
What a great experience! I really loved this class, and Professor Ahmad helped make it great. The textbook was pretty intimidating, especially since this was my first Philosophy course ever, but Prof. Ahmad explained the material in a clear and super-entertaining way. Her assignments help you get ready for the big final exam, and are easy.
A fantastic instructor who inspired me and made me wish I had majored in Philosophy. She cares about her students and is really happy to help you if you ask. Talks fast and packs a lot of information into lectures, so you need to take good notes. And you need to do the reading! But if do that, the course is actually pretty easy!
My favorite prof ever at Langara! She was totally inspiring, and her lectures were super interesting even when she's making you rethink everything you were so sure you knew. The material was sometimes a little bit over my head, but I still really got a lot out of this course and this amazing teacher. Thank you, Doctor Ahmad!
Fantastic course taught by a great instructor who obviously loves what she's doing and knows a HUGE amount of stuff about...well, pretty much everything. This is the first course I've taken at Langara that really blew my mind, and because of Dr. Ahmad I now see "A.I." (always use the quotations marks!) in a totally different way.
1110 was a very interesting concept for a class, however, I think it could have been far better as a second-year course. In my view, we could have seen so much more that the field of AI has to offer if we had not needed to spend such a large amount of our class time introducing all of the basic philosophical concepts. The final was pretty tough too
The prof is awesome and caring. There's a presentation and media analysis in this course. The course is very interesting and fun. There are readings that you need to do before coming to class.
Dr. Ahmad was amazing, every class was so engaging because of how knowledgeable and quick witted she is. It's helpful to have taken intro to philosophy beforehand (I did not), but we did spend a good portion on ethical theories before moving forward. Can't praise her enough and I would definitely take a class with her again!
She is just great. If you like Philosophy take as many classes with her as you can. Not super easy but it's fair, if you don't like to read too much on your own don't skip classes. If you attend to every classes you will do well. If you don't attend to classes just make sure to read every lecture
Dr. Ahmad is a great prof, and truly cares about her student's success. I've taken several courses with her and have nothing but positive things to say. If you're new to philosophy, interested in gaining a deeper understanding and application of theories, or simply curious about phil,I'd recommend taking any of her philosophy courses. Do the work=A
Assigns lots of writing, but is to be expected within a Philosophy course. Basic and organized course format, but made interesting by the readings and topics assigned. Four papers total and weekly analyses. Gives minimal feedback, but is helpful when you need it. Extra credit was availble on the final exam. Overall a great instrutor and course!
