You don't need to go to lecutures, but if you do, at least look like you're paying attention, because she'll point you out to everyone. Lab explanations are online, but going to class makes it clearer. How you do in the class is really determined on how you do on the final and how your TA grades.
Randa is an excellent teacher. She is very smart, and often presents the material in an almost impossibly easy to understand manner. She uses transparent over-heads, and writes on them in lecture and that seems to produce an almost sedative, glazed-eyes "ohhh.." reaction from the students. She will not hesitate to embarass you if you fall asleep.
She is extremely helpful, if you go to her office hours she will practically do problems for you. Lectures are early in the morning, but worth going to because she explains labs well, and her website has helped me extremely through labs.
She puts all her lectures online so it's not necessary to go to lecture, but it helps to hear her explain everything. She'll also give you the equations. If you go to class, DON'T FALL ASLEEP because she'll find out and throw chalk at you. No kidding. But she's very intelligent and very helpful. If only she'd taught Chem 1C!
Brings babies and small furry animals to class and threatens to use them as test subjects in order to keep students awake and interested. Has some kind of fear of raising her arms above shoulder level, I've been watching and she never did it in both summer session classes I took. Despite being almost 6 feet tall, she's GREAT, call her Mrs. Roland
Randa makes gen chem lab actually somewhat interesting and fun. Her lectures are clear and helpful - you get everything you need to know to do the labs. She said she had surgery so she can't raise her arms above her head - it's not some phobia, in case anyone from summer was wondering.
TOTAL ****
Professor Roland is a quirky individual who LOVES science and anything to do with chemistry. It is a huge part of her life and shines through her efforts to teach it. Despite the fact that chemistry can be difficult to understand sometimes, she makes it all worthwhile. Plus, if you have her class in the early morning (8AM) she'll give out treats!
She is like a grade school teacher, very animated, and bubbly. She makes 8am class seem worthwhile. Her material is straightforward. Her test are short so you need to know it all to score well. Shes really cute, I think I have a crush on her. BEST CHEM TEACHER EVER.
excited about chemistry!
Except for the fact that chemistry is hard, she made is totally clear and you knew exactly what was going to be on the tests. The assigned homework didn't relate at all to what was on the tests, and the TA's suck. But Randa is super nice and helpful, definately take her class!
Don't fall asleep in lecture. Randa made lab very clear and easy. She even eliminated the stressful reading and rewrote the whole lab book so you know exactly what you are doing. This saved me couple hours compared to the older lab book (2005). She is very helpful and upbeat. Recommended to take the class.
Randa is a very easy going and smart professor. She teaches the material very clearly and is very easy to understand. I have had hard Chem teachers before but she makes things very easy and I would say she is my favorite teacher to date. And yes she will call you out if you fall asleep. Or leave early, trust me i know.
Super nice. Tries to make material as interesting as possible. Tests are easy and graded generously.
Took Chem 1A and 1B. Randa is great, best chem lecturer at santa cruz, take her class EVEN IF you have to get up for 8 am lecture. Simple tests (if you pay attention and study). She's a cheerful, cute, chemistry nerd
Randa is the best professor ever. She will dance around the stage demonstrating electron spin and atomic bonding. She is engaging and her passion is contagious. Her tests are easy to study for and her practice questions are very helpful. Just don't fall asleep in class and you'll do great.
the only mistake that you could do in this class is falling asleep--Roland wants every student to pass so long as they actually attend the lecture and listen (please dont talk, it pisses off everyone around you and HER). HW is easy, and tests are mild (the tests are easier if u study). no hard time passing the class and not soo hard to ace.
Randa is interesting and fun. She makes 8 am class worth it. She's helpful and fair, her class is do-able, I heart Randa!!!
Randa Roland is probably the BEST chem teacher you could have. She is wonderful!! Her father passed away and she still came to class! She's dedicated, funny, and, she lights stuff on fire. A+++++!!
Great teacher.
She was a great teacher. I had her for 1A/1B. She is very fair and teaches you to love chemistry. I came to school as a Environmental/Bio major and now I've gone to Environmental Chem...she's that good. She is a great teacher, you learn very much very well and will to great on tests if you go to class and pay attention
Randa is extremely fair.
You are going to be lucky if you have her for Chem 1A&B. I came in thinking I hated chemistry but her teaching style makes chemistry concepts extremely understandable. I wish she were teaching C. But she is funny and helpful...even at 8a.m. in the morning.
My experience with chemistry in high school was not the greatest, but Roland totally changed that for me. So far, she is one of my favorite professors and I wish she had taught Chem 1C. She is always so energized at 8AM which makes me actually want to go to lecture. I never missed a class. She is very dedicated to her work and I respect her a lot.
Randa is awesome. She's easy to talk to and she responds to feedback right away. I actually want to come to chemistry class.
Randa is extremely nice and very willing to help students. However, I find her perkiness kind of annoying at 8 AM. I had her for both Chem 1A and 1B. Her tests are pretty easy, and she generally has pretty good TAs.
Very clear. Easy to get an A. Just go to lecture, listen, and take good notes. Very conceptual and not big on calculations. One of the best Chem professors at UCSC.
Randa is absolutely amazing. I had a hard time dealing with Chemistry in High School and was worried about being a BioChem major at UCSC but Randa completely helped me actually understand Chemistry! She's extremely fair and she's extremely nice and helpful. If you get the chance to take her I highly recommend it. She's positively the best!
Really great prof. Does her best to keep her class fun and entertaining. There IS a reason why when students have the choice between an 8 or 11 chem class, they choose roland's 8am class (even in the winter). Very fair.
I love Randa's class. She is wonderful and very helpful. Try and get her for both 1A and 1B. Her midterms and final are straight from her examples from lecture. She is so funny and if you have her for 1A, she will make an explosion experiment! She is kind hearted and she CARES about her students. She wants you to get an A!
Roland is the best Chemistry teacher I have ever had. She cares that her students learn the material and do well in her class. She breaks everything down so that nothing is ever ridiculously difficult, and her tests are very fair. Always go to class and take notes because it helps a lot and you won't have to read as much of the book.
Randa is awesome. She makes chemistry easier and fun. 8am classes are hard to attend but it's worth it, especially when it comes to tests. Take her class.
She really wants you to learn. Works hard so that you understand the material. She seems more commited to students than most of my professors.
randa is the best chem teacher ever! very helpful and very easy to understand. if you go to class and section, and take good notes, you will do fine. i never read one page in the text book, just did homework questions and review worksheets that she made and i got an A.
Randa is amazing! Best chemistry teacher ever! Her tests are very straight forward, and she doesn't try to trick you on them. She is very helpful during her office hours. She is very clear during lectures and she pinpoints what you should know for the exams. She has high energy during her lectures, even at 8:00 in the morning!
hated chemistry until i took this class. randa went above and beyond what professors are asked to do. She reached out to her students, made learning about chemistry exciting. Best Science teacher I have ever had, and I am a 97 year old chemist.
good techer, easy, but clear
GREAT! her energy level at 8:00 in the morning is AMAZING. She really cares about her students and is willing to work with you no matter what your case !
I havent had the other chemistry teachers but I am sure that Randa is the best. If you are on the fence about the 8am time, trust me its better to have her than the others. While the last part of the class was very difficult, I think she did her best to explain it. Do not get Kevin as a TA. Great guy, horrible teacher.
Prof Roland does everything in her power to help you pass her class. The only think that I disliked about the class was the fact that test are 90% of your grade with no curves. Doing practice problems in the book is the best way to learn since test questions are structured the same exact way.
Everyone knows she's the best Chem professor, and everyone pities the fool who takes Schleich because they didn't check RateMyProfessors. Took her class at 8AM instead of someone else at noon, and I don't regret it for a second.
Randa is an amazing teacher! I have never taken chemistry before and she made everything really clear. She cares about her students and makes lectures fun and interesting. Her lecturing style is incredibly detailed, and she provides a great deal of outside information as well. The only downside is that the tests are worth 90% of the overall grade.
great teacher, kinda weird, but very passionate and really wants everybody to understand the material. very dedicated to her students
Randa is the better of the two chem 1a instructors. Her lectures are extremely helpful, especially when it comes to studying for midterms/final. There is definitely a decent amount of work in this class and it might end up rather trying at times. Randa works hard to have her students understand the materials covered in the course. Take 1a w/Randa!
Randa is an awesome professor. She even says to the class that she makes it so you can learn the material and pass. She doesn't put any trick questions on exams, and there is a lot of support and practice problems on her website. Just remember that you have to put some effort into her class too to get a good grade
Great Chem Teacher. Highly recommended. Explains the material clearly and tests are same as practice exams. Easy A, if u study
She is one of those rare professors that will make you want to change your major to chem..!
Take her class--much better than the other profs.
Great teacher, very clear. She's a lot of fun to learn from, a bit of a pyromaniac, and posts her notes online. She wants you to get an A! She does talk to the class like it's full of 5 year olds, though, so once you get past that you should be okay.
She explains very well and always there to help you with anything. You can go to her office hours or by e-mail anytime and get help.
GO to lecture, she talks very clearly, provides excellent notes for homework, go to office hours when unsure, and do her practice tests. Be diligent and on top of your homework and you will do well. She's the liveliest lecturer iv had thus far. Her tests are the fairest iv ever taken.
AWESOME!!!!
1A is much easier with her than 1B! For some odd reason she 1B with her is EXTREMELY HARD..ended up with a C (& i got straight A's in other classes)! I heard summer classes are easier so I'd recommend taking 1B in the summer with a DIFFERENT professor.
Randa is fantastic! She is exceptionally helpful, hilarious in class, and generally a joy to learn from. Highly recommend!
Randa is a phenomenal professor!! Take her class, she's clear and answers all questions. I enjoying going to her lectures because I always learn something fun and interesting. I enjoy the jokes and hilarious things she says in class, makes class more interesting and fun. THE BEST PROFESSOR YET. I had her for the past two quarters and it's been fun!
Hmmm.... two classes for Chem, Roland at 8 or anderson at 10..... i choose roland! not even close, if your playing for a good college education and not for an easy grade randa is the way to go. cares a lot about her students.
Randa is completely amazing. I hate chemistry with a passion but would gladly change my major to chem if i knew i could get her to teach all my classes. Honestly, she rocks. She's easy to understand, which is remarkable in the sciences. She's funny and seems unable to stand still. If you get the chance, take her class.
Prof. Roland teaches so that students can learn. She does not try to trick students and is extremely fair in her testing.
awesome teacher! i had her for chem 1b and shes amazing! u have to go to lecture and practice too. if u do that u will be more than fine. Take chem 1a or b with her for sho!
WOW 3 quarters of gen chem with Roland is the possibly the best decision ever!! First year students that need chemistry need to be in Roland's class. Trust me, your life would be so much better.
Randa's a very nice prof. I love how she can be randomly fun and humorous at times. I think she could be a little more organized w/her notes by giving us examples w/step by step labeling or something. However, she's very fair, likable, and easy to approach. You won't sweat too much in 1P but you might in the further chem classes.
Roland is a great professor! Very surprised at how energetic she can be at 8AM every morning. Very clear lecturer. She tries to make everything as easy to understand as possible. Her exams are based off of her examples! Attending lectures and doing the homework are highly recommended!
She is a Great teacher who lays out the material in an easy to understand way..forget the book. She makes class fun and entertaining and seems to care for the students, her tests are extremely fair, go to lecture and her reviews! know how to do the problems she took the time to write out
One of the coolest teachers I've had, but the class was very frustrating, as most of the teaching and the necessary learning revolved around memorizing and knowing how to use equations. Very dry and insipid. As others have mentioned, though, Roland is very clear, friendly, and not too demanding, which is great if it's the A you're looking for.
Roland was the best thing that happened to me. First A in chem!!
Very funny, nice, and dedicating to teaching Chemistry. When teaching instead of solving out the whole problem she often skip steps, which make it little confusing. Other than that a great professor!
Although lectures are sometimes hard to follow, Randa will always try her best to get everyone on the same page. She is so nice, and personable. She wants everyone to succeed, and cares about all her students as if they were her own children. She is funny, which makes lecture more enjoyable. I love Randa.
Randa is very approachable, she replied my e-mail in half hour!! Her lecture is interesting and easy to follow. I think her notes is extremely useful when it comes to exams. She hosts extra office hours before final, it was really helpful so make sure attend those. I don't even need sections to pass the class. It's YOUR fault if you don't pass the
She is really funny, lectures can get boring. But she is nice, she curves the class. Study out of the practice problems and attend section.
Extremely easy professor. Too easy, in fact. If you are looking for a free grade, this is the class for you. However, you will learn very little. If you want an instructor who actually challenges you, avoid Randa. She takes roll, but her lectures are probably unnecessary. Just know the stuff off her review, which she posts online before exams.
She is a super nice/approachable/easy teacher! You're super lucky if you get her :) I had her for Chem 1P/Chem 1A and it was the best. You don't even need to read the textbook, just study off of her notes and practice exams and you're good to go. That and attend her office hours before the midterms/final! ^__^
Fun teacher. Very enthusiastic. Makes things really simple. Tests are easy too. Highly highly highly recommend.
Extremely helpful. Uses TA's to teach the class, but still is available during office hours. Best gen chem teacher at UCSC.
if you need chemistry be in Roland's class! I crashed 1A for 2 and a half weeks to get into her class and stuck with her the rest of the year. I went into it thinking it'd be a drag but 3 quarters of gen chem with Roland left me enjoying chemistry enough to become a chem major. Super awesome super nice
Randa is hands down one of the best professors on campus. Attendance is mandatory; she truly does care about you as a student and wants to you excell. This class was real easy. She said since its a class to get you ready for 1A, it doesn't have to be so stressful. No midterms, one final. And she makes the class so interesting!
Did not study for the midterm AT ALL - like didn't even crack the book - but still managed to get an 88! She keeps the tests as straightforward and simple as possible, while still making sure you understand concepts. She was kind of condescending in office hours, but you don't really need those anyways since her class is so easy!
This is the easiest A you can get in any gen-chem class. Randa is very entertaining and straight forward. Her tests are not tricky in the slightest. Her lectures are very helpful, and there really isn't much extensive studying required. One can get an A by just attending class and doing the example problems as she goes over them.
Superb
Probably one of the best Chem Professors you will ever get. I highly recommend you take her class because she really helps you understand the material through her lectures. Best part is, her tests don't try to trick you. Again. Her tests are EXTREMELY fair.
Awesome teacher! Class wasn't ridiculously easy, but put in the work, and you'll be happy with your grade. Midterm and Final were really fair; just go over the example problems from her lecture. At the same time, Randa makes lecture entertaining. I disliked Chem before and still do, but at least I understand it better thanks to Randa.
Easy, C on midterm, A on final B overall. Chilling
Awesome professor. Only good under division chemistry professor I've had here at UCSC.
Easy. She explicitly says what will be on the exam.
Randa Rolan overall is a good professor. If you are looking for an easy going professor; she is the professor for you. She put me to sleep every single lecture in Media Theatre, but I went to MSI every week at got a near 100% in the class. Interesting material/ okay instruction.
Randa is awesome. Her class is really easy to pass. She goes over everything that you need to know for the test the lecture before. Her tests are really easy. I got 100% on both of her midterms.
Randa is a very cool professor and her class is not that difficult as long as you pay attention to the notes.
She is the best Chemistry professor I've ever had! If she's teaching a class you need to take, definitely take it with her! She really cares about her students success in the class.
She is a very spunky professor. I found the class relatively easy compared to other chem 1a classes, while still covering all the material. The homework is based on the notes (which she posts online) and she gives helpful advice on how to do the homework. The homework is exactly like the tests. She made general chem look very easy.
Randa gives lots of examples, so it makes the homework easy to understand. It's not hard to get an A or B in this class as long as you do her homework, practice tests, and attend section/MSI when you need help. Take her for any chem class if you ever get the chance.
Her midterms are pretty easy. The final threw me off though, it was pretty hard. Randa is nice, funny, but teaches the material kind of slow. 1C is pretty easy but keep up with all the equations and ways to use them.
Few teachers can actually catch and hold your interest in a 500 student lecture hall, much less those teaching chemistry. Randa is one of those few. Her self described "kinetic" style of teaching, clear and colorful lecture notes which she posts online for the class, patience and enthusiasm for students who struggle and work hard, is all too rare.
She's a cool teacher. She explains alot in class so lecture is important. She's understanding. Plus I did horribly on the 1st midterm, and now I recieved and A on the second midterm because I got help when i needed it. I found that going to section helped significantly although optional(I had Staci). Overall, it has been a good learning experience.
Randa goes through class as if she had already taught you the lesson. She will just do a problem in front of the class and she considered that teaching. While she does go through the problems step by step, I had a hard time with this class because she has the program ALEKS teach you, not herself.
Randa is simply amazing. She's helpful, energetic, and genuinely tries to help students get good grades. Her lectures are extremely helpful and she posts them online as well. Her exam review sheets are basically the midterm/final so be sure to review those. Attend lecture, work on review sheets, and do hw and you'll get an A in the class!
DONT TAKE 1B with randa, she has no idea what is happening. very good for 1a and 1c, but not so much 1b
Roland probably is a very good professor but taking Chem 1B with her was horrible. Her notes were all over the place and her lecture went too detailed into specific topics that did not matter and just made it all around confusing.
Though Randa is an amazing professor otherwise I never had a clue what was going on in class. She talks in great detail however does not highlight what is ACTUALLY important. Midterm was fair however there was no real clue as to what would be expected. For Chem 1A definitely but not 1C.
Randa is a super nice and enthusiastic professor who is very willing to put in the extra time to help you master the content and pass the class. She is generous with her curve at the end of the quarter to assure you get the best grade possible within reason. She doesn't fail people as long as you put some effort in.
Randa is an amazing professor! Some of the concepts are challenging, so even though she posts all her lecture notes online you should still attend lecture to hear her explanations in person. She has very fair exams. I didn't read the book, and she tests from her lectures so you don't really need to buy it.
Very easy teacher. Easy A class. Final and midterms are very easy and doable if you attend lecture regularly. Highly recommend her. She is funny and very enthusiastic about her class.
Randa is a very thorough lecturer! She shows a genuine interest in your success in the class. Her exams are very predictable and fair, definitely pay attention to what she emphasizes during lecture to study! As far as grading goes, she'll do what she can to make sure people will pass.
Randa's a fantastic professor, had her for 1A & 1B. She's thorough and clear in lecture, & her notes are online, but unless you're REALLY stuck on something, it's almost unnecessary to use them, just go to class. Her tests are multiple choice and very straight-forward. No tricks. Fun class, cares about her students a lot, take her if you can! 10/10
Literally the best professor I have had thus far. If you need to take chemistry or want to expand your knowledge on the elements and such, take Randa's class. Her tests are all straightforward and she does not want anyone to fail. She does her best to prepare you and actually teach you something about chemistry. She genuinely cares for her students
If you're not the brightest person when it comes to chemistry, then I recommend you to wait for her class because she seriously provides you with so many resources to help you succeed. She cares about everyone. You have to put in your work tho. If you study everything she puts on her website, no book! you'll do just fine! she doesn't trick you.
Randa is one of the best lecturers by far. Her tests aren't difficult and she is very helpful in and out of lecture. It's an easy A and you'll learn a lot in the process!
She is so wonderful. I love the way she teaches
She is nice and all but when she is teaching she assumes you already know what she is talking about and moves too fast. Also, she can be a bit boring
Randa is the best professor ever. Her tests are easy if you keep up with the class and homework. You'll miss A LOT if you skip her lectures. I would definitely take her class again.
The lectures aren't organized. She skips from topic to topic. She gets confused during lecture and may give you the wrong answer or explanation. Up to the students to ask questions to keep her on track. Her explanations need explanations. Relied on discussion section and MSI. Attend bc need verbal notes to go with visual notes posted.
Randa is extremely into chemistry and really wants her students to succeed. There are two midterms and a final. The midterms are easier than the homework and very straightforward. She provides lots of examples are opportunities to get help if you are struggling in the class. I highly recommend her class.
I would not take Chem with her again. Her notes are extremely messy and hard to understand and she uses the craziest colors for each step.
I passed both my midterms with a B and an A but bombed the final. The overall grade was passing but she still failed me.
Lectures mainly for example problems showing chapter concepts. Midterms and Final are multiple choice; all the material on them are covered in lecture. If you do the homework and regularly attend lecture (andor section), the class with Professor Roland should not be a problem.
2 midterms, 1 final. First midterm should be a piece of cake, second is a wee bit harder, but it is very easy to get 100 on both. The final can be a bit challenging but is not cumulative. Great professor and always there for you if you need help. She has extended her office hours just to help me because my class and her hours overlap.
Approachable. Takes stupid questions the wrong way, kinda makes you feel embarrassed. Practice midterms and finals are exactly like the real tests when i took the class. Super easy tests.
Randa Roland is awesome. Very clear and good at explaining concepts. It's easy to stay engaged in her class because of her great sense of humor. She basically tells you what will be on the test during her review sessions, so go to them. They are key to doing well in the class. She's very available for outside help.
You know I thought I liked Chemistry, but you know what this woman did to me. She made me hate it. She uses colors which are confusing and serve no purpose. She just looks at your "improvement" and if it's not that good then surprise to you you end up with a F. She totally disregards HW and anything else. Don't take her class!!
Randa is by far one of the best chemistry professors at UCSC. Honestly wouldn't mind taking her class over and over again. Please teach gen chem, ochem, and biochem Randa!
Her tests are totally not what she prepares you for. It's a slap to the face. She goes off on a tangent during lectures. Would not recommend as a frosh.
She is very helpful and wants you to succeed.
Randas notes are different if you're use to a professor who writes the notes and example for you. Her notes are more freely so if you miss a class and you get the notes online, sometimes it won't be as clear--you'll adjust to it. The midterm was easy but the final was way more challenging and harder than expected; she didn't do so good preparing us
i struggled with chemistry in high school so i was very nervous about taking her class. she is very likable and makes you want to attend class, she is pretty clear on most of her topics and her homework system was very engaging and I actually learned the material that skipped past me in class. Tests were pretty easy, overall great teacher
Randa is awesome! She's adorable tries really hard to make class fun, relatable, and has a ton of resources open for you so you can pass. I want to be her best friend ahaha
I hated chemistry in high school. Hated it with a passion. Had an awful teacher who didn't explain anything. Randa is the complete opposite!! This was my favorite class to go to this quarter by far. Very clear, gives plenty of examples in class, and goes over the material on the quizzes in the class or two before them. Amazing!
Roland is the bomb. She definitely is the epitome of a passionate college professor, and you can see it in how she carries herself. Tries to get everyone in class involved, dances around, "forgets" to hold class on days before holidays, makes jokes, the whole 9 yards. Loved her.
Randa is a great professor. Her first midterm was alright, the average was about a C-, many people did really well and many people did really bad. Her second midterm was also alright, about the same average. Her final was a different story. It felt like she rushed the last few weeks of material (which was the hardest for this course).
Randa is a great professor. She is helpful and clear in her lectures. Her midterms are easy to get an A on if you understand the homework and go to the review sessions that she holds. Final was a bit more difficult but I still managed to get an A. Go to class and pay attention and you will do fine in the class.
I loved Randa! Mostly freshman take Chem1a, she knows this and she's not holding it against anyone. 2 midterms and 1 final, all curved slightly. I skipped lecture here and there and only went to discussion twice and I managed. If you can do the homework and understand the online practice problems then you will do great.
Roland is amazing professor and don't get me wrong, I love her death and she's the ultimate reason I passed! Her knowledge demonstrations are can what either make or break your grade in the class and its up to you whether or not you utilize the information taught by her. Chem 1A is a very difficult subject and Roland will do her best to help you!
There are 2 midterms and 1 final, all multiple choice. Barely opened the textbook. Go to discussion and the review sessions before the midterms and finals because they help a lot. If you're able to do the practice problems on her website without help then you'll be prepared for the final.
Randa is an amazing professor. She explains things in a very clear way and will answer any questions you could have. It is a somewhat tough class so if you miss a class, you could fall behind. I would recommend going to every lecture... even if it is at 8am like mine was.
Randa is ultimately a very nice lady, and she loves and knows chemistry well. However, her "helpfulness" sermon falls flat because giving everybody help when you have a class of 450 doesn't work out. Her tests can be tough, and there are so few questions that you have to miss one question maximum to get an A. The final absolutely killed me.
Her tests are tough, definitely make sure you study for it. Study the practice exams but she only takes about 3 out of the 65 questions to put on the midterms. The final was brutal even after studying so much. She does sometimes put trick questions so watch out. Make sure you go to lecture otherwise you won't understand the powerpoint online.
Randa is hands down the best chemistry teacher I've ever had. She's so attentive and all around awesome! Her lectures are fantastic! The course material is dense, though, so going to lecture is a must.
Super awesome class! Randa is so passionate about the material, it's really inspiring. Very helpful, and really cares about your success. She gives you a ton of practice problems before exams, and they are VERY helpful! If you can do those, you'll do well on the exam.
Roland is an amazing Chemistry professor and will do her best to help you out especially if you ask questions in class and attend office hours. She is understanding and wants you to succeed in her class. Chem 1A is a very difficult class and she's a great lecturer although it may take her 15 minutes for a single problem but she's very thorough.
Randa is an amazing professor. She tries her best to explain the material clearly in class and she is also extremely helpful outside of the class. The class gets tougher towards the end so don't get cocky in the beginning. If you have questions, email her or go to her office hours, and she'll help you out.
Randa made a lot of jokes and generally made an effort to have the material be understandable. She also uploaded all notes online. However, whenever I emailed her with a question I would get a response saying "It was in the notes"... very helpful. If you're good at chemistry and you don't need that much extra help this is the professor for you.
Attendance isn't mandatory, but unless you're exceptional at chemistry, you should still attend lectures. Her lecture notes are very colorful, which can either be great or overwhelming (I found it fun). Asking questions in a huge lecture hall can be intimidating, but she won't make you feel bad for making the effort. She wants to help you.
I absolutely loved Randa. Always funny and always helpful!
Randa does her best to makes things clear. She is helpful and available for help. Class is straight forward and tests are not tricky. Definitely take her class.
She's a great lecturer and goes over tons of homework examples in class. She does her best to make her test easy and like the homework problems. She responds to emails quickly and is available after class. She is a great lab teacher as well.
Randa is one of those fantastic professors that you seldom are allowed to see in colleges or universities. She truly wants her students to get A's (without cheating of course), and is always available to help you. The tests are fair, and test you on comprehension of what is being taught; compared to wording problems ridiculously so you fail.
Randa is pretty cool. She has a great personality and really cares about the students. This class is hard, but if you work for it it's definitely possible to get an A. She really wants everyone to do well, but sometimes struggles to explain concepts during lecture. She is brilliant and sweet and I would recommend if you are willing to study.
Her first 2 test are easy so take advantage of getting A's in it. Those are usually 10-14 questions. The last test is about 25-35 questions. She teaches chemistry very good but you have to pay attention. Also this class is much more easier if you understood chemistry in high school or at least took AP Chemistry.
Randa's lectures are amazing, and she clearly explains concepts with plenty of examples. I highly recommend taking her classes because of her accessibility outside of class and dedication toward her students!
Spectacular professor, spectacular person. Doesn't supply extraneous information ever in lecture; what she goes over is what's going to be on midterms and finals. One of the rare professors who genuinely enjoys teaching. So much love for this woman.
You're automatically expected to know several chapters of material from the start, which made me feel behind right away as someone who didn't get a whole lot out of high school chemistry. Be prepared for a lot of extra work in section, MSI, and at home with the book because her lectures are not conceptual, just fast reviews of sample problems.
Randa seemed like she would be a great professor at the beginning. However, her lectures are sloppy and she didn't really go into concepts. Lot of practice examples in lecture, but she would mess up half the time. Felt like I was wasting time attending lecture, you're honestly better off taking notes from the book.
Randa is an amazing professor who truly cares about her students in every way. She is passionate about her subject and seeing students reach their maximum potential. While she by no means hands you an A, she gives you every opportunity to do well and will help in any way she can. She's so interesting and I couldn't have asked for a better teacher.
It's not that her class is hard but she's not that great of a teacher. Her lectures are mainly just example problems and she doesn't explain concepts fully. But she's really nice and it's obviously that she's passionate! Just know that you kinda have to teach yourself the material :)
The class was easy until chapters 6-8. The midterms were reasonable but the final was pretty hard. The average for the class was 66%. Randa is a good professor, just the final was insane.
In the beginning it very easy to follow and understand. However after the 2nd midterm, she was all over the place - she jumped/didn't finish explaining examples. Her tests are straightforward - no tricks, same as the practice questions. That being said, I really liked her class, it wasnt that hard for me, but some of my friends had a tough time.
The class started off easy (Ch 1-5), but got difficult towards the end (6-8) due to the nature of the subject. To do well, you MUST study her lectures and read the book for better understanding. Her exams are 1pg open note and identical to the problems in the lectures and handouts, which were very fair imo. She curved the final and overall grade.
Professor Roland is an excellent teacher. Her lectures are extremely educational and fun. She records all of her lectures and uploads them online so you can still learn all of the material if you miss class. Her exams are fair but challenging.
She's really nice, definitely passionate about what she teaches which is a plus. Also very willing to answer questions in lecture and goes over a solid amount of example problems, so if you go to class you shouldn't have any issues getting an A.
Solid class, well structured, right amount of work, and tests were fair. Randa is a terrific professor who cares about students' understanding and progress.
Fantastic professor. Explains things well and cares about student progress. Tests are of appropriate difficulty and make sure you actually know the material.
Randa really cares about the well-being and success of her students. She is really easy to approach and is often available outside of class. The teaching style was active learning, which cold have worked better with longer class times, but overall the class was was helpful and instructive. Textbook recommended but can do w/o.
She's a fair grader in a sense that her tests are all multiple choice so you get what you deserve to get. I didn't take AP chem in high school, so this entire class, yes, even from chapter 1, had been hard for me. I was able to get an A because I took advantage of all the handouts and practice problems she has online for each chapter. Practice!
The first two midterms were very straight forward and all multiple choice. The final was a bit tricky, but manageable. She's very respectful and an amazing professor.
Roland is a great professor! The class is very fair and covers a wide range of Chemistry topics. The midterms and finals are very straightforward and she wants everyone to succeed.
Only chem prof at UCSC that seems to understand that a lot of people who have to get thru the gen chem series aren't chem majors or math stars. Learned a lot and did really well--she's very straightforward about what you need to learn and no pretentious curveballs on exams! Really appreciated her and what I got from the class.
Randa is a great teacher who tries to get her 500 student class involved with the material. She tries to teach the material so every student can understand it. The material is quite easy, just a lot of calculations. She is very caring and wants her students to actually learn and succeed in the class.
I am horrible at chemistry and only had to take it because I'm a transfer student, so I was dreading this class but Randa was nothing but helpful! If you put the work in and go to the occasional office hours, you can get an A. First two tests were straightforward, final was harder. Didn't touch my textbook once
Randa is a super cool lady with tons of chemistry tattoos! She literally is adorable and really kind. She wants you to understand the material and gives you wayyyyy more resources than you could ever possibly ask for to succeed. I'm glad I took her class. Typical intro to chem material, nothing too hard, but you obviously need to study & do hw.
She is a super chill lady. But I just can't concentrate in her lecture...
Randa is an amazing professor, and brings her adorable dog to class. It really makes a difference when your professor is engaged and committed to the class. That being said, she expects the same from you, so if you invest some studying time the material should be a breeze
Final was much harder than the midterms. She's not a fan of math, so the way she does Chem was confusing and hand-wavy for me. If you really don't care about understanding where the equations come from or what the equations mean, you'll probably love her. Took Chem 1b first so I was expecting more math clarity. She's a super nice person though.
A great person, an OK lecturer. I've heard she's great in a classroom but a 300-person lecture wasn't her scene. She's caring and hilarious but her lectures were hard to follow and unclear sometimes. FInal was much harder than midterms. If I could redo it, I'd go to office hours every week and do ALL her practice worksheets.
Randa is awesome, funny and has a cool vibe (her tats and service dog). Good lecturer, but attending lecture is not enough, outside studying/practice is critical to doing well on exams (KD's). She REALLY cares about your success (and your wellbeing) and you can always come to her for anything. Great professor, wish I could take her again.
Great professor. Lectures very clearly and explains problems in detail. First two midterms were really easy. Just focus on the homework problems. After the second midterm, make an effort to attend the lectures. Chapter 6-8 is when the content gets difficult. Because of that, the final exam was also difficult.
All right, so listen. Randa is an okay professor, she makes a lot of mistakes during her lectures, which made me stop attending cause I started to get mad confused. Midterms are okay, but final is HARD. Tips: use her online practice sheets!, do homework, and study previous finals!! Read questions slowly & understand what you're solving for.
She was a great professor to have for my first quarter at UCSC. She brought her dog to class everyday which really helped with the stress of college. Her lectures are clear and she is very good at explaining the material. She was also very invested in the well-being of her students. She allows a double-sided page of notes on tests too!
Randa is a great professor and a really sweet person. Her teaching and notes are really good for the first two exams, but after the second exam/ before the final the notes and lectures get confusing. Do the practice problems and study well before the final(midterms are really easy, final is reasonable but definitely harder ).
She's a pretty great lecturer. You need to go to class in order to be successful. For this class specifically, the midterms are pretty easy. You need to do well on those. The final is one of the toughest tests you'll ever take. She prepares you fairly well for them but a lot of it comes from your own practice. Time manage effectively and you'll b k
The first two midterms were extremely easy. I got a 90 on each. The final killed me. I didn't understand equilibrium at all, and I pretty much winged it. Luckily there was a curve, and I didn't fail the class. Roland teaches the chemistry weirdly, but since I had learned a different way to do the problems, I did it my way which was easier.
Randa spoils you. Never took Chemistry in high school; she WANTS you to ace her class. Will spend extra time to clarify topics, is extremely friendly and caring. Her lectures are clear and concise. She is very understanding. Exams are not hard as long as you study and go to lecture (obviously). If you have the chance to take her classes, do it!
Funny, caring, and great at explaining chemistry concepts. She really wants you to do well in her class. You get a 8.5x11 sheet of your making on each test, and the hw is only due every couple weeks. Tests are very similar to practice problems she posts on canvas and her website. Randa is wonderful, I wish all professors we're like her!
Never actually met Roland but the labs classes are very straightforward when she is running them. Easy A as long as you do the work for webassign and go to every lab section.
Professor Roland was extremely nice+helpful when I took Chem 1N in the summer where she actually gave lectures. For Winter 2021, she was kind of behind the scenes for the entire quarter and the TA's taught the sections. Labs are very easy, just don't get tripped up with the calculations. Solid choice for the gen chem labs.
weekly labs in webassign with follow up assignments, plus short video quizzes to watch just so you understand the experiments better. I never interacted with Randa but her videos were clear and the labs were easy
the tas mainly ran the labs, so this is more about the tas, but the lab sections weren't too difficult. pre-lab due every week and labs are on webassign, but tas go over each part of the lab so it isn't difficult to complete. pay attention and read the procedures and you'll pass.
lab sections run by the ta, labs are on webassign. graded on your webassign work (which usually is 100% if you pay attention to the ta and procedure), pre-lab assignments (due every week), and two abstracts. can't say too much about randa herself but she did make the class easy to pass.
Cannot say much about Roland herself, but the lab sections themselves are usually well ran and interesting. None of the assignments are difficult as long as you pay the bare minimum amount of attention, it isn't too hard to get a high grade. Labs were usually interesting and they get you use to using lab materials.
Easiest lab class ever! Assignments were straightforward and grading criteria was clearly communicated. I never met Dr. Roland as my TA was the primary mode of instruction, but she seemed cool in the pre-lab videos that were posted. She also posts encouraging messages on Canvas, which I found super sweet.
Love her so much! Never met her because the class is run by a TA, but I have talked to her through email. She is extremely caring and compassionate and I am honestly so grateful for taking this course under her. I haven't had many good experiences with professors, so its nice to finally have someone who actually cares about her students!
Prof. and TAs are very helpful during the Lab. That was an interesting class for those who need hands-on chemistry practice. The only issue was the WebAssig, it always bothered me. Finally, for a lab class, easy to understand, stressless, and an easy A. Would recommend studying with Prof. Roland.
Great Teacher! She's not as involved with the course as it is mostly the TA's teaching, but she is incredibly accessible and a helpful resource in the lab. She does use webassign which is god-awful, but she provides slides which are really helpful. 10/10 would recommend.
Literally an Angel, best prof at ucsc. Very kind and very helpful
