Dr. Davis is a nice man, but he grades his essays different than what i was used to. He's a good teacher, and if you go to him for help, he'll help you in whatever way he can.
There are A LOT of essays to write in his class, but he grades fairly and he always helps if he can. I would recommend his class.
Dr. Davis is very knowledgeable and prepared. He expects his students to work hard, but you really learn a lot. He is businesslike, but pleasant.
Dr. Davis is awesome, I really enjoyed his class.
I enjoyed Dr. Davis' class. Although I am not a literature buff, and I HATE writing, and thats all this class involved, I still really enjoyed being in his classroom. He made the classroom and very pleasant environment.
Prof. Davis is pretty easy to understand. He grades his essays fairly and is very easy to get along with.
Dr. Davis is very interesting and very thorough. Tests are not very hard and he grades pretty soft. Make sure to read assignments so that you know the quotes for tests.
Prof. Davis is a great instructor! He has a great attitude with his students and he wont make fun of you if you ask a dumb question. I think he is pretty hot for an older guy.
I'm warning you DO NOT take World Lit. with Davis!!!!
Class was challenging. Lots of reading and several essays. He grades the essays pretty strictly. Good teacher, very interesting. Something really sexy about the way he speaks.
Good teacher, but the class was very challenging.
Excellent instructor.
Do not take his online class. I am not sure how he is in class but he is not helpful at all on the online class.
He was hard, but I learned a lot from him. Sometimes class was boring, but considering the subject matter, I don't blame him. He was very nice to me, however he is very intimidating, especially when you are giving a presentation in class.
Great professor. Also went out of my way to take him for 20th Century Poetry. Really knows his stuff and makes it interesting.
love him!
Dr. Davis is wonderful!! He is an excellent instructor, and I love to hear his voice!!
Hate him
Reading is easy. Tests are tough but if you do the reading they're not that hard just a lot of writing. If you can't do it you ought to blame it on just not being prepared instead of racism, ridiculous. You know you can cause somebody to lose their job over crap like that especially when it's baseless. Grow up.
He is an average professor. There are times when he seems moody and does not want to be there, and there are other times when he is simply captivating. His assignments do not seem that difficult. He assigns a good amount of reading, and he gives quizzes based on the stories.
I REALLY ENJOYED HIS CLASS. HE WAS VERY INFORMATIVE AND STRUCTURED. I RECOMMEND HIM HIGHLY
Good class. Hard to pay attention.
Expect 12 essays, books mandatory, reading assignments almost every class. Classes are a borefest and mandatory.
booooooooooooooo!
He is pretty boring. If you are in a class that is not talkative, there is minimum interaction. He is willing to help you whenever needed. Very nice guy. Reading is requiring and daily quizzes are given. I expect everyone to do pretty well if you go to class everyday and ask for help when needed on the essays.
was NOT my favorite teacher
Booooorrrinnnng!!!!! Not very good at reaching out to the entire class. Reading assignments every night, quizzes every class. You will have to read the material in order to pass.
ASSIGNS READINGS 4 EVERY CLASS MEETING, QUIZES ON THE ASSIGNED MATERIAL, HE IS EXTREMELY BORING! YOU WRITE PAPERS IN CLASS! 8-10 PAGE RESEARCH PAPER!
very good instruction- explainations of the works of literature. somewhat dry but mostly entertaining and fair on grades. Made a B during the May-mester (crammed a semester of English Lit into 4 wks) I would take his classes again!
This teacher is definitely my least favorite teacher. He stormed out of class after throwing a hissy-fit, because no one could understand his ambiguous questions. I'm almost convinced he came in with the wrong lesson plan and then got mad when everyone looked clueless. At best this teacher acted very unprofessional.
WORST. TEACHER. EVER. do not, under any circumstances, take this man for World Lit. You will never understand a word he is saying, and his tests are a joke. He speaks to freshman as if they are grad students and insults their intelligence.
don't take this teacher
If you have to choose between not taking English this semester and having him as a professor then wait till next term. NEVER TAKE HIM! Hopefully we can phase him out of the department. Seriously he recorded attendance based on whether or not he ALLOWED you to do an assignment. Three absences like that and you'll receive no credit for the course.
We should force him out of town. Terrible teacher.
Do not take his class! He is super boring and non enthusiastic about coming to class. attendance is mandatory if you want to pass the class.
I would not take this professor again. He gives quizes everyday on assigned reading. His lectures are boring and pointless, they dont seem to have anything to do with what we were learning. He threw his book down and droped the f bomb on the class when no one could answer his question. Very unprofessional.

If you are willing to take hard courses..Then this is your guy. Be ready to write a paper every time you think about it. Prescense is mandatory or you will take the course again. Will give extra help outside of class. Course is similar to an advanced class.
Wonderful professor!
I took American Lit 11 online. I don't regret taking this course online, however, I personally feel as if he chooses to deduct a very small amount of points off of a test or essay just to prevent a 50/50 for some reason. I am not just saying that. I am a very good student, but he would deduct small points without typing out a reason y. NOt hard tho
Quizes daily, a lot of reading, and a lot of essays. Some what boring. But geod teacher.
As far as tests go, there were only 2 which were on the 2 books required to read. There are daily/weekly reading quizes, as well as an essay due about every week. The essays have to be 3 pages long. Sounds like a lot, but that is normal compared to other teachers. His actual lectures are really boring. If you're willing to work easy class.
Test on books that are required to buy and read, but they are open book. He grades very harshly. Hard, and boring lecture, BUT is very understanding. I have a C right now. Quizzes at least once a week, a lot of reading, and essay every class usually. HARD teacher! Be ready to write essays, and he grades them tough. But I do like him.
He is a very organized teacher. he always checks emails, and replies super fast. He is very reasonable. His class is boring, and you have a TON of essays, and reading quizzes. there is 4 test, and he grades very strict.
Book quizzes almost every class, not a problem because I actually read the stories. I zone out because he is BORING, but really dedicated to his work.. you can tell he loves what he's doing. He grades very harsh but gives good feedback so I can correct myself and learn for the next time. He also ALWAYS emails me back. good teacher
Very good at what he does, and you can see that. Read when he says to read, there are quizzes pretty much everyday, but aren't hard if you actually read. He helps a lot on your papers and will answer every question you have. If you take him, be sure to pay attention (he will curse you out), answer questions, read, and come to class.
He is boring and hard to listen to. He rambles on and on about nothing
He's not really hard. You just need to come to class and do the assignments. There are many essays so make sure you have your copy paper and ink ready. There is minimal group work. His lectures are not that long, but can be boring at times.
Insane amount of reading for an online course. Not timely grading, except on tests. Weekly discussions are interesting and thought provoking. I'm not sure how he is in person, but I probably wouldn't take him online again due to the insane amount of reading. His lecture notes are helpful, and he frequently posts announcements to keep you informed.
Boring lectures, quizzes every day, thats how he checks attendance, and you have an essay a week.
Professor Davis is an overall great professor. He's a very smart man that knows what he is talking about. Expect an essay almost every week, one or two reading assignments per week, and an occasional test every few weeks. He is very clear in all of his directions and helps in any way he can. Assignments aren't difficult. Just do the work.
He is nice, but he is a tough teacher! Only a couple of tests, but they are very long. Expect a quiz EVERY SINGLE DAY. Get ready to read a lot.
Although there is a lot of work and quizzes, he is my favorite professor. He is very helpful and very clear.
If you have the option to take someone else I would recommend it. One of the hardest teachers I have had at JSU. He's a nice teacher, but I wouldn't take him again.
Grades hard but overall cares and is a good professor. Plenty of papers due about three test.
There are quizzes everyday about the assigned reading to make sure you read it. He was a good teacher, and genuinely did care about me and my grades. I had fallen behind, with literally no excuse, but he still accepted my late work (even if it was a month late). Offers a lot of help outside of class & is only slightly intimidating.
Professor Davis is a great professor. Went to office hours once or twice and he was willing to help anytime I needed. He gives clear instructions for assignments and also clear comments on any assignments turned in. Lectures heavy, but if you take a few notes and participate you will receive a good grade. Expect to read before every class.
Dr. Davis takes attendance before quizzes each class. If you ever have any questions about your papers, he is willing to meet during office hours or talk after class. A lot of reading occurs, but thats what all of the quizzes are on. If you do not read, you will not do well on the quizzes. I would take him again.
Several essays, lots of reading, and quizzes. He does take attendance so you HAVE to come to class or you will not pass.
I took it online. The tests were very hard and he gave you a ton to read. He gives you 3 minutes to answer 4 questions in one quiz. Very difficult in my opinion.
Davis was a fair teacher all around, wasn't too terribly hard. The problem is that he aimed vitriolic, unprofessional beration at me on two separate occasions *in class*, the latter of which resulted in me leaving the classroom in tears. I had to end up *lecturing HIM* in his office. Howerver, this was years ago; I have no idea if he's mellowed.
Quizzes everyday with only 2 minutes to answer 2 open ended questions. He doesnt provide a schedule for the semester, just updates you 2 days before so we didnt know we even had a midterm until a week before. He also told a girl in our class to go to the disability services center because she had trouble completing the quizzes in 2 minutes.
Prof. Davis grades papers far too harshly for someone who barely assigns prompts to write off of. He is inconsiderate to students struggling and despite the fact that the class is hybrid and we are in a pandemic, refuses to use Teams for students who must miss class. If you can avoid taking him, I would.
Class was EH555. The workload for this class was insane- 10 units in 4 weeks with nearly 40 stories/novels to read in addition to lots of quizzes and discussion posts. The most difficult exams I've ever taken were in this class, as well. Content would have been enjoyable to learn if we weren't so rushed to finish and move on to the next unit.
Prof. Davis is overall a great person personality wise. If you take this class, please take it during a semester you have little else going on. We read close to 50 short stories and 6 novels, of these 50 short stories and 6 novels, 2 question quizzes every single day. Essays were also due days apart, but he does grade papers pretty fair!
Dr. Davis knows what he is talking about, but it is a long class. The readings are depressing to put it mildly, and there are two tests that determine the grade, excluding a course paper and final. Assigned works always had the worst possible outcome for characters. Do not take this class with him if you are prone to depression.
He was boring and none of this will help me in the future. All it did was bring down my gpa.
Literally the most NOT HELPFUL professor, that is also super unorganized! His reading quizzes are a joke, your being graded on speed reading.
He was a good professor but his tests were very very difficult. As a student you were to write 5 short answers (4-5 sentences), write an essay, and name the author, the work, and a description of the authors work.. 5 of those also in a hour
Talks a lot about the same thing over and over again. Very nice guy though.
Overall, I liked him but. Not the easiest 201 professor by far. Tests are extremely tough.
I would not choose this professor for American Lit. His tests are ridiculous. Only take him if you majoring in English or just really like English. There are easier professors.
Davis is the best grad level lit prof. The MA program would be better with more professors like him.
I enjoyed my course with Prof Davis. I found him to be a very knowledgeable and caring professor who set clear course objectives and tailored assignments to deliver maximum understanding. As a high school teacher, I appreciated his style.
Lit of the South. It is time-consuming but he grades fairly. Of the summer grad lit offerings, this one was my most enjoyable 10/10.
I really enjoy his personality he's very caring and makes it clear that he enjoys my presence but as a dyslexic his work made me want to cry. SO MANY PAPERS. but I probably needed to get the extra work to increase my ability to write well. He's a tough grader.
Do not take this professor. He doesn't give study guides to help for exams and there is a quiz before every class based on his assigned readings. He is very sarcastic with students. He expects you to read a ton before the next class to prepare for his quizzes.
I hope that no one else has the displeasure of taking any of his classes. He cussed (F bomb) at me in front of the entire class for being on another classes canvas page during his lecture. Had to teach myself about lit. Hard to get along with and little to no consideration for anything. Tests are terrible. Let's us out late constantly.RETIRE PLEASE
DO NOT TAKE ANY OF HIS CLASSES. RateMyProfessor doesn't give me enough words to write all how I feel about this man. Dr. Davis, if you're reading this, please retire already.
Grades very critically/tedious when doing it, the smallest error makes your grade go down. Lectures are basically him reading straight from the book, talks the whole time. Assignment = quizzes. Not very clear when giving instructions for assignments or essays. He WILL try to squeeze two essays in the last week of school (from experience).
Definitely avoid this one if you don't already have a PHD in English. He's not going to work with you because ultimately does not care about your success.
Don't take this class with Dr. Davis. I could have got an A if I had swapped my class.
Don't take him!
Dr. Davis was an excellent professor. Personally I think these negative reviews are from people who should not be in college in the first place. If you can't write a basic sentence without errors, that's a big clue. He doesn't deserve the hate from these dumb dumbs.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS! If you love English and are an English major, take him! If you just need English for a credit, DO NOT TAKE HIM!!
Davis Lit of the South was well organized and the assignments were clear. He's a great professor and he does not deserve the hate from lazy students. If you slack off and don't put the effort in, you won't do well. But come on, this is graduate school.
The problem is not the professor. The problem as I clearly saw from our peer review activities is the students! I don't mean to be rude, but a lot of people at our school shouldn't even be in college. The ones who use there for their need to be working on a roadwork crew instead of getting away with using ChatGPT to write THEIR assignments.
DEAR DR. DAVIS, PLZ RETIRE ALREADY. SINCERLY, EVERYONE
I liked this professor because he didn't waste your time with busy work. Everything you had to do was clear and he would tell you in a lecture intro how to approach the readings. If you follow his directions you will do fine.
This teacher was so bad I had to drop the course. I couldn't understand his lectures and always had to reteach myself, missing key points. If you leave class without his permission, he calls you out infront of the entire class. You will fall asleep in this course. Get ready to read 20 pages of text and take a 2 question quiz on nothing you read.
He's very boring lecturer. He's also rude and bordering on inappropriate. I had to use the rest room the female emergency kind, and he was super rude about it. I have not passed one of his stupid timed quizzes and every thing he has said or feedback to me has been mean. I don't recommend him.
I fell asleep every day. His voice is like a bad monotone until he yells at someone. Overall not a good choice for what should be an easy A or B for people that can write basic papers. Quizzes will wreck your average!
a nauseating and neurotic experience. take literally anyone else.
Worst class and professor, ever. Quizzes unfair, lectures mind numbingly bad. Made me realize how awesome my life was before I took him.
AWFUL PROFESSOR DO NOT TAKE!
So actually i never wore a seatbelt driving to this class. hope this helps
Seriously don't take him for American Lit. I have fallen asleep literally every class. His grading is mean as well. Take literally anybody else. Your GPA will thank you. You're welcome.
Dr. Davis is very old fashioned in the way that he teaches. His class mostly consists of oral lectures and reading quizzes. You will be required to read A LOT if you take him for Native American Literature and you will be quizzed on what you read. He also was about 10 minutes late to class more than a few times and one time kept us late... nice tho
This teacher is the worst teacher I have ever had at JSU. He lectures the whole class and there is no grades other than tests
There is a different semi-long reading you have to have done before before each class, and there is a 2 question quiz about the reading EVERY SINGLE class meeting. If you struggle with reading comprehension, I honestly recommend asking ChatGPT to summarize whatever the reading is, and take notes based off of that.
Jax State needs to make him retire. I fell asleep in this class and got yelled at. Learned how to take anxiety medicine that's about it.
Davis is frequently rude, dismissive, and disrespectful. His lectures are unpleasant and largely pointless. Attendance only matters because of the attendance policy. The quizzes feel designed to frustrate rather than test understanding of the material.
