Mr. Frederick is a overall good professor, he's very cool! Please don't show up late constantly unless you have a valid reason why because he will shame you! His class isn't hard at all! Highly Recommend!
He's a very good teacher. Helps whenever you need it and he's really a funny person. He finds many ways to make sure you do not fail! I recommend anyone to take him! He also finds ways for the lectures to be entertaining and not boring how most english teachers are.
Lectures daily out of the text book. He can be a tough grader on papers but almost always gives them back for revision and extra points. Funny guy but can also have his moods! He wants you to pass!
Really great professor. Cares about your grade and how you're doing. Wants you to do well. Don't interrupt a lecture, though - he tells you everything you need to know and gives good ideas.
He's fair. He really cared about students and wanting them to do well.
He's a good guy and a good teacher he just gets a little moody sometimes
Hes awesome and I really recommend him:) his lectures are amazing and I never grow bored.
I struggled for most of the semester. It was hard. but he really tried to help. Very encurraging, but honest too. He cared about how we did and not everybody saw that. I like his last essay where we talk about what we going to do when we done with college and how to make criminal justice better.
Took him for English 101 and made an A. He was nice. The beginning of the semester was easy and we got most of the work done before finals, which was good because we could work on our other classes. I'm taking him for 102 because he's really clear about what he wants and will work with you. I wish he had done more Kahoot in class.
Taking him for a Literature course and he's very direct but his exams make up for it. He's generous. Even made us cookies one day!
Funny and will work with you. I took him for 101 and took him again for 102. He said he's not sure if he'll teach the literature class next semester but if he does, I'm going to take him. Very specific in what he wants and tells you "pay attention to this" and doesn't surprise you.
He tends to assign homework then doesnt ever pick it up which is good and bad. One time he made a paper due and never picked it up until a week after
So glad I took his class. Taking 102 with him next.
I really enjoyed taking his class! He gave good feedback and worked with everyone. He made sure students got the right grade to get course credit!
Mr. Frederick is an amazing teacher. At first, he comes in hot to try and intimidate you I guess, but he slacks up as the semester goes on. He is very understanding, so if you miss a homework or whatever, he will extend the date if you have a real reason. He holds his students to a high standard, so it motivates you to do good. Highly reccomend
This man is an angel from above! I recommend taking this class. I drop English 102 twice and was afraid of taking it but this man here pushed my writing skills in ways i would not imagine this is a class that i learned in. He is caring and understanding. When something came up just shoot him an email and keep him updated.
Intimidating at first, but a breeze once you get to know him. Extra credit opportunity. Very helpful and good at advising. A lot of Star Wars example though.
He perceives himself as a very hard teacher and makes you think you would never pass the class. But here's the thing the class is very easy and he cares about your grade. He gives random pop quizzes! You have about 3-4 essays to write which are very lengthy!! But you can make corrections after he grades them. He also offers ways to get extra credit
His American Literature class was amazing this semester because he made the readings like it was happening today and talked about the history of Feminism and religion in America. Really good. I liked the lecture where he talked about the history of Feminism the most, because it was a thing since before America started and he showed that.
Was not helpful when I asked questions. I am normally am an A student and decent at writing papers, but nearly failed the class.
He says hes funny, but not really. Really really nice when you go to his office! He gave me two extensions this semester and was really cool about it. Taking him again for American Lit.
So easy. I think everyone in the class made an A.
Hes a great guy and better teacher. He relates the issues in readings to problems in our societies today. He isnt heavy on lecturing and will ask for the class to be a democracy so you as a class get to decide on test dates and such. Also he knows well that we have other courses and will tell you that ! Hes great
AAAAHHH!!!! What an AMAZING teacher!! LIFE SAVER!!!!!
I had him for 101, 102, and American Lit. He's a little intimidating at first, but once you get to know him, super super caring and will do anything for you. He goes out of his way to make sure you're doing well in class. I wish all my professors like him. His American Lit course is super easy - read, talk about it, and you'll do fine.
He gives you lots of time to revise and get your grade up.
He is amazing! He his hilarious and is so easy when it comes to due dates. Mr. Frederick never change ur wayz;)
The material was very easy, but he made it very convoluted very often. I caught him red handed not knowing the terminology of his own material, expressed this through email to ask for clarification, and was met with a snarky reply that basically said "I'm not wrong, figure it out". But he is an easy grader, so take his online class if you want to.
Taking him for an online class and he makes a point of meeting you to make sure you're on track. Nice - a little tough, but that's prob b/c it's an online class. In person, he makes it a lot easier. My roomate is taking him for American Lit and says he's really easy.
Mr. Frederick is an amazing instructor. He is very understanding and personable. HE makes sure that he uses examples that everyone will understand, in order to make sure each student gets a firm grasp on the topic.
If you put in the effort, you get an A. That simple. All about participating!!
I took Randall Frederick for 101 & 102 he was absolutely amazing! I passed with an A both times.
Took him for both 101 and 102, he is the best professor i have ever had. He really cares about the students , you have multiple chances to revise your papers to ensure that you get a good grade in the class.
I have taken him for both English 101 and 102. He is an outstanding professor. He really cares about his students and he gives multiple chances to revise essays. He literally lets you submit your rough draft to get edited, gives his input on it, and then gives it back to you to revise. I have taken him online and in person, both were great classes.
Very easy. This was my first online class and it was pretty straightforward. Do the work, revise when you need to, and he pretty much lets you do what you want.
Mr. Frederick is a very outgoing and fun professor to take. His grading criteria is very specific, and is the only thing you must look out for. Follow his grading rubric and you will do absolutely great and enjoy learning with him. Also dont be that one serious person in class, yall wont get along.
I took him for 101 and he was absolutely outstanding so I took him for 102. I regret it and I am not taking him for 232. He grades really hard and he has no sympathy towards those who are having a hard time. Its true that if you work hard and do as he tells you youll pass. If you pass the proficiency Ill bump your grade My 88.17 was not round
An easy A if you do the readings. 4 exams, an essay, and a final project I was done waaay before the end of the semester and could spend finals working on other classes. Much easier if you go to his office and talk about your life and why you think & feel the way you do about the readings.
He is amazing!!!!! Go to class, participate, and try.. he WILL help you if he sees your effort!!!! Gives many chances for grades, gives great feedback, and is extremely helpful and hes funny. Recommend him!! I took him again for eng 232 this semester !!
This man is by afar the best educator I have EVER had. He inspired me to become and english major, and hes one of the reasons I remained in college. Shout out to Randall!
Soo this class was hard if you didnt read. If you read, you got it!! Frederick is absolutely one of my favorite prof. Ever!!! Finished 102 w an A, finishing 232 with an A!!! Dont get me wrong, project/essay is time consuming, but easy and totally doable!! TAKE HIM ANY CHANCE YOU CAN!!!!!!
3 written exams, 1 presentation about an American author, and final is 12 pages essay on a theme about American literature. This final was due a week before your other finals and I thought that was cool. Hes very relax but is a tough grader and he grades you on participation in class. He tells you to read the stories but i used sparknotes
This semester of English was horrible. The proficiency folder is the most ridiculous thing ever. Mr. Randall is a tough grader and expects a whole book to be written within a couple weeks. Dont take
Three exams (he dropped the final), a presentation, and a paper. Super easy. Most of us didn't read but were able to do well because he's super chill and explains the readings really well.
Taking him again in the Spring. One of the best at Southeastern.
So confused by the bad reviews. Dr. Frederick is really accessible and totally willing to work with you. I don't do well with public speaking because of anxiety and he let me present in his office. Talked a lot of Feminism and was funny.
This guy was terrific. I loved him as a professor despite my grade being an F because of severe grading the whole semester; however, if you fail the first two essays, STAY IN THE CLASS. At the end of the semester before checking out his website
Mr. Frederick is a great choice, especially for those who actually enjoy reading books or writing essays. He holds you responsible for 5 assignments throughout the year, but you get to choose what they are (essays, exams, presentations). He gives you more freedom that any other English professor. He does talk a lot, but I appreciate his passion!
Crazy semester with the pandemic, but he was straightforward and very caring. Told you where to focus and specifically what to do to pass, available for Facetime, lots of extensions and opportunities to revise. Taking him again for American Literature because he's interesting.
Randall "wants to see you succeed" but he will do everything he can to make you fail. Hands out zeros on essays like they're candy, if you do not give him exactly what he has pre-imagined in his head, prepare for an unsatisfactory grade. Gives little explanation on why the bad grade was received. 10/10 would never take again.
Whoever gave this professor bad reviews is lying. During the pandemic, he told us we needed to take relax and took out a major project along with allowing us to revise old assignments to help during the difficult times. Caring, and very smart. Funny too. His class was harder, but he just tried to challenge us so we could advance our skills.
One of the best teachers Ive ever had! He cares so much about your mental health and does his best to give you time to do his work. There are only 3 papers, a midterm, and a final so every grade counts. He also always ends class early. 100% would take again.
Mr. Fredrick is very cool and down to earth. English 102 is all about writing essays. He is very considerate and makes the hardest papers worth the least amount of points. Hes also super accessible outside of class. He wants you to pass and will help you out in whatever way he can. Definitely come to class tho, for your own sake, its necessary.
He is very caring when it comes to his students mental health. He will push back due dates as far as he can if students are stressed. He rarely meets for class in person. He posts videos on moodle to clear up any confusion. He seems sarcastic in his emails but he really is a sweet guy. He has a few specific things he looks for when he grades.
This man hands out low grades very easily. I once had to re-write an essay 3 times until it was to his liking. In addition to rewriting several others. Also, there is no work personal life distinction in his class. I learned more about his life than how to write. Save yourself the stress and the time.
Mr. Frederick is an average instructor. He cancels class often with short notice, and the feedback from the essays are not thorough. However, he cares about his students' mental health and is available to help at any point during the assignments.
Mr. Frederick was such a good professor. He seems tough and intimidating through email, but he is very caring. He will truly work with you in order to keep you from getting stressed out. He tells you exactly what he expects on each essay. I highly recommend this class.
This is an amazing English professor if you're willing to commit to the class. The only grades posted to moodle were 3 essays that we wrote over the duration of the semester & the midterm/final exams. He's very clear with what he wants & posts videos on moodle every week & rarely holds class in person. He wants you to focus on your mental health.
I'm taking his class right now and absolutely love it! We have 3-4 papers we have to right and he's very clear about what he wants and he gives good feedback. He even pushed back some of our due dates so we could have a mental break. Definitely take him if you can!
He is a great conversationalist. As for his grading he is not very clear what he wants ever. He doesnt give rubrics. I asked for help several times and even visited the writing center. All he suggest is I take another look at my essay. It's very hard to explain to the writing center what's going on without a prompt. Hardly gives clear feedback .
He is a great professor, but I did not like how the class was set up. He began the semester without guidelines & due dates in order to give us "freedom to make the class benefit us individually" & that sounded great. But then trying to complete the assignments with no information became difficult. In class material gets boring, but not hard.
If you need help writing and have questions about anything choose a different professor. He claims to care about you and your mental health but does not respond to any questions directly. No clear feed back or grading scale. Nice, but as the semester went by he made me feel like i was an idiot for simple questions about essays. Hands 0s like candy.
Professor Frederick is the best teacher I have had so far at Southeastern. He is very understanding, English has always been my weak subject. He makes it easy for me to understand and he is helpful. He makes sure his students are doing well and understanding the work. Take him if you can!!! He is amazing, and will help you out so much.
He gives out alot of zeros. He is very tedious when grading you do not have a rubric you were just expected to know how and what to write. We were not giving clear prompts we were just told to write this kind of essay. He says that he cares about your mental health which is nice but sometimes it feels like he makes it more difficult. Kind of rude
I honestly have no clue how his rating is so high. He is the toughest grader iv ever had for English and frankly be doesn't care what you have or how much you have. If it's not his standards, you're getting a zero. He says he cares about your mental health, but he is quite rude to students who have a different opinion than his own. Just don't.
He grades very tough so be aware and prepared. On the first essay half of the class failed, but he allowed them to revise it. He is somewhat clear on what he is looking for on the essays, we wrote 3 essays that he graded and another 2 but that was for the final and midterm.
Amazing professor who cares about the mental health of his students. You have to do 4 essays and they have to be 4 pages long, no less (which is standard). If he sees his students struggling, he will touch base with him to see what he can do to help.
Grades hard and seems a little blunt but really does care about how you do in his class. You will be very prepared for the final if you take him. Essays take some work/thought but werent too bad.
The class was a waste of my time. I thought it was modern fiction but nope, romance publishing. 6 projects on whatever you want, when you want , long as it pertains to romance , but he started being hypocritical and demanding specific stuff and dates at the end. Everyone ended up with a random A, so yea , waste of time
I will say, he is not for everybody & a lot of my fellow classmates tend to think he can be a little rude. I however, am almost done with English 102 and I have a very good grade and he gives great feedback. I normally can only get a B in English since I am not the best writer. If you do all the minimum requirements however, you'll do well.
I took Professor Frederick my first semester of college and was by far my most hated professor I've encountered at SLU and I am now junior. Aside from being a very tough grader, he was extremely rude and arrogant when answering questions and talking to students in general. Class started with 25-30 kids, ended with 4. Save yourself the trouble!
Professor Frederick is a good English teacher but he is very rude when it comes to giving feedback. I understand he wants the best for his students, but he could also learn how to talk to people better. Overall, I did good in his class. He gives 3 major essays, a midterm, and final. Take him if you can handle constructive criticism.
Started off the first semester with essay the first essay, 4 pages. he gave me a 0 for not having the 4 scholarly sources i had 3 and he gave me a 0 for having 3. Its now the end of the semester and I am finishing with an F. He is also very rude and sarcastic when asking questions, it makes you not want to ask anything. hes embarrassed people.
The worst teacher I have ever had. VERY rude, once told us that we "weren't his problem" after Dec. 2 since he was focused on his wedding. He once gave me a 0/100 on my first essay in his class b/c he assumed my essay was about a topic he did not "accept." Had to call him out on it so he would actually READ my essay. DO NOT TAKE HIM! HE'S HORRIBLE!
He is super rude and very arrogant. He honestly doesn't care about your mental health or your grades and he would give you an F if he din't like your topic and wouldn't even grade stuff with partial credit instead he would just not read it and give a 0.
He is honestly the worst professor I have had in my entire life. He is extremely rude. He automatically fails you if your essay isn’t perfect. I literally had a .33 in this class. I decided to drop this class whenever he sent an email complaining that everyone is failing. I would not recommend him at all.
I took him as a new freshmen and didn't know about rate my professor and I wish I could have gone back and got a diffrent teacher. He is incredibly smart and knows what he is teaching however is very unapproachable and can sometimes come off as rude. Like some others have said If you can handle criticism he's a good choice but im soft so not my tea
I absolutely love Frederick. He is so funny, cares about his students, and tells you exactly what he wants. He is a very hard critic, but he just wants you to meet what he needs out of you and truly wants you to succeed. He is very understanding that students have life outside of classes and things happen. I could go on and on about him. 10/10!!!!!
Overall professor Frederick is a great English professor. Yes, he can come off as rude and arrogant at times, but that really is just a part of his personality. He is a caring and funny guy but sets strict boundaries for students in 102. Having clear grading criteria and harsh(er) grading methods, if you put in the time/effort it's an easy A.
He is by far my favorite teacher. He will give some good feedback and I suggest you go to his office hours/ email him to have phone calls. Super easy online course
He is a really good teacher and cuts out all the unnecessary things students learned in high school English. He is a really good transition teacher. The way he talks can sometimes feel condescending though.
very unclear essay directions, biased grader
He cares about his students a lot. There are a bit too many writing assignments but I get it, it's an English class. He usually lets class out earlier and earlier the more the semester goes on and often cancels class to let you work on assignments. Show up to class and you will have a clear understanding of what he wants, if not you will be lost.
If you don't ask, you won't get the info you're looking for so always show up to class and always ask questions! He can seem unapproachable at times so be ready to wait on an answer, remember he's only one person. Overall made classes super engaging and relatable though
He is very understanding. There are a lot of essays to write but he and your peers will help you the entire time. He cares about your opinion. I've never been a fan of English but if i could take him for all my english courses i would. Highly recommend taking his classes!
When I read his reviews before taking him, I was nervous. But honestly, he isn't bad. As long as you follow what he says, what the rubric says, and put effort into your writing, this class should be easy. He can come off as rude/cocky sometimes, but I think that is just his personality. It won't be the end of the world if you have to take him.
I recommend this professor if you do not have to be babied. He is very cut-and-dry which I like. The reason some people who rated before me are saying that they got 0s on their essays is because they did not follow his criteria. If you follow his instructions/criteria.. cut-and-dry.. you will pass the class with an A. He WILL help you ASK QUESTIONS
Honestly I was very concerned after the first day because of how opinionated he was towards things that I personally disagree with, but I actually gave him a chance with an open mind and ended up finishing with a 100 in his class. His lectures are very informative. he likes participation. Literally just follow the directions and you'll be fine
All essays must be 4 pages long. Very rude, will judge you and your topics in front of the class. Doesn't help when writing essays, its all on your own.
He pushes a certain political agenda and will automatically decrease your grade if you talk about something he disagrees with (like he did to me in test 2). He does though teach you how to think deeper into various topics which broadens your mindset! Tough grader, politically driven (biased), but if you "conform" to his mindset you will pass.
He has clear grading criteria and he is very observant when it comes to participation and attendance. College can be tough but that's not enough reason to skip his class because it's "English" . If you understand what he is looking for, you'd be fine.
Absolutely nightmarish, extremely tough grader with lectures that add nothing of value but are mandatory. Unreasonable deadlines with extremely vague rubrics (20 min required speech worth 20% of your grade.) Unapproachable and extremely arrogant, will dock points if your essay doesn't align with his beliefs. Horrible professor, avoid at all costs
