At times rambles on, but very entertaining.

Is very responsive to students who hold a genuine interest or need additional help.
Great Teacher. Rambles on but it is associated with philosophy, so it is humor by interpretation. I learned alot and you will too.
terrible...wouldn't bother taking this class...if you need philosophy, search for a better teacher...he gets mad (FUMING) at tiny things and is not very personable or helpful...not a particularly easy class either
Weird guy. Boring but easy class. Just make sure you get his notes off blackboard or a classmate if you skip.

He's rather eccentric and babbles about things a little bit. I'd take him again for something else.

IM NOT A PHILOSOPHY TYPE PERSON BUT I ENJOYED HIS CLASS. VERY EASY TO TALK TO.
I found him rude, boring, and more rude. I took time to talk to people in the class that had weird views. That was so anoying. The best part of the class was when it was over. Don't take him unless you like snot-nosed-know-it-all-teachers.
he sucks! he doesnt even know what he is teaching!
TAKE THE INTERNET CLASS WITH HIM!!!!!!!!! The internet class was simple, read the chapter, answer the multiple choice questions he gives out. He posts assignments ahead. Final is cut and paste of assig. so keep them with answers.
yes, he is weird, and defenitly boring, but he gives you a review with everything you need to know for his EASY tests(he doesn't really even believe in grades), you don't need to show up for class either...easy A or B
Rand, as I like to call him, reminds me of a guy who has no notion of what the real world is like. His liberal attitude makes him very unlikeable. Also he seems to feel that anyone not associated with Philosophy is beneath him. EAT SOME MEAT RANDY!!!!
I really love the goofball students that hang out it his office. I love walking by there because just passing by you can see sparks flying off of their heads trying to see who is the smartest.
EAT MORE MEAT HORTON YOU ARE NOT AS SMART AS YOU THINK YOU ARE TO MUCH LETTUCE WILL ROT YOUR BRAIN!

Not a difficult class. I had no idea what to expect since I heard mixed reviews about his teaching style, but he is very nice and fair. All you need to do is read and show up. The A is there for the taking.
very interesting class. very stimulating discussions. maybe not grown up enough for most of students.
Respects all opinions. Will give as much help as you need if you ask.
this teacher was extremely hard didnt give any review or anything...tests are hard...expected you to write a 500 word paper in 50 minutes then come back the next day and taje a multiple choice test
great teacher. he will help you understand the text. gives lots of extra credit opportunities. class participation is a must which may turn off some students, but the discussions can be great. very knowledgable.
Very smart prof. however is a horrible teacher. Some of the reading assignments are hard to read. then he asks questions that try to trip you up. Mid-term and final are both 500 plus word essays. If you think philosophy is hard take someone else.
If you take his class, get ready for the "don't eat meat" stories. Talked about protesting in front of KFC stores with other protestors on several ocassions. Read the online notes and test will be easy. I would take again.
terrible teacher. gets mad when u ask a question, not helpful. 500 plus essay tests.
Eat some meat Horton, it might help you calm down at the little things that set you off. Knows his stuff, but gets ticked off (turns red) when ANYTHING interupts him. The party is at his office after class, which means no help unless you want to speak in front of 10 people.
This guy is annoying. i learned nothing in his ethics class. he is all over the place. class is pretty easy to pass and he doesn't grade hard. if you want to enjoy class, don't take him. you leave pissed off when you leave his class. he is too wierd and you can barely here him.
Really interesting class once everyone becomes comfortable enough to talk. Participation makes things interesting. Test come generally from quotes out of the book, and it's open book. Made at least a 95 in that class.
This guy is vague. His needs to go back to a teaching seminar. Takes days to respond to emails. He doesn't teach or provide any nelp on the readings. You read, then you test. Doesn't explain his grading scales. My suggestion is take a different professor. What happened to getting what you paid for?
Professor is not helpfull at all. Does not explain the readings. Have to read the book or you are not going to pass. Essays are 3 with 500 words limit and he drops one. lots of reading test. three scantron from readings, open book. English as second language? Do not take him!!!!
Mr. Horton is an outstanding teacher. He makes the class fun and interesting. I have taken 3 of his classes and intend to return to take another. Dont mind the 3 500 word essays or the reading parts becuase this is college is it not?
Randall possesses a strong grasp of historical philosophy and continues his Master's education. This allows him a student's perspective on contemporary philosophical issues. I took Intro, Ethics and Logic under Randall and wasn't disappointed. Students hanging out in his office before and after class is a testament to his "open door" policy. A+.
You cannot blow off reading or studying for his classes. He will not hold your hand through class discussions (like real college). Very helpful with questions about the reading. Class participation is vital to passing the papers.
This instructor is brilliant. Anyone who had a problem with him did not want to take the time to THINK! Philosophy is a hard class and he requires that you read the textbook and then THINK about what was written. He is not attached to any one dogma but will listen to anything you logically present. Very passionate about philosophy. I recommend!
Very fun and interesting class. He exposes you to many stimulating arguments and the class has an inviting and open feel. I really looked forward to going to his class. If you are confused, he is very approachable. As for the difficulty, the readings are pretty short and enjoyable. Definately on my top 5 list of professors at san jac.
He does his best to challenge and provoke thought. Some people don't like that.
Mr Horton's classes are as intresting But, this depends upon the contributions from the students! Both courses are classes that student participation is almost a requirement. Talk about the issues, voice your thoughts, and listen to others. Not a great deal of reading but you do have to read the material to discuss it in class!
Professor Horton is a fantastic instructor. He genuinely cares about the students.
quizzes are all open book except writing exams.. only 3 writing exams which later he drops 1... made above a B on 1st 2 papers.. no need to take the 3rd.. reading a must and not difficult to understand.. an open mind is a must!
Mr. Horton was great at starting a discussion, then stepping back and letting us talk. When he lectured he had an excellent sense of when to be serious and when to be funny. I learned a lot and enjoyed his laid back approach. He was cool without trying to be, not phony or in love with his own voice. He was a good teacher.
I am taking his online class and I am kinda confused about him. Takes forever to respond to your e-mails and automatically assumes that you know how to work black board and does not really explain what the assignments are. However, I just aced my first onl

yea he is so boring and horrible. he rambles on for the whole hour and a half and trails off, trying to make jokes that aren't funny. he gets soo mad and hostile if you forget a pencil or forget about an assignment. dont take his class.
he is a hard teacher, yes he does try to trip you up sometimes, but he wants you to think, people should get over having to write essays with 500 or more words. you are going to have to eventually in college anyways.
horrible!
The class is really easy. Just do the reading and be prepared for class. There are mulitple choice tests and 3 500 word essay tests. Do not worry about them because you can use the book on any test. There is extra credit available in the form of a summary of the readings. Overall an easy A if you read.
I am going to be honest, I never read anything besides the one essay I had to do my presentation on. I went to class, took notes, and most importantly kept my mind open to the ideas he presented, and I got a B. He will answer all the test questions in class and you get to use your book. He is really into what he is teaching and I think that helps.
Mr. Horton is a great teacher. Very helpful and understanding. I was really worried about this class in the beginning, but it turned out to be one of my favorite class. For those who wined about how hard his class was, you need to re-evalute if you are even ready for college! He gives lots of extra credit and ALL of his tests are open book.
Very moody and emotional. Comes to class sometimes in a good mood, and other times when he really needs to stay home. He has his favorites; hope you are one of them. The information was interesting but his ups-and-downs and derogatory comments when he was in a crapy mood made me hate the class. So glad when I walked out of there for the last time.
Two 250-word essay tests, one was timed. The M/C quizzes can be saved so that the answers can be researched within the book. Some questions were vague and only one was nowhere to be found. Anyone can get an A in the course or a B with average effort. He was slow to return some discussion board postings.
I had a strong interest in the material before I entered the class. If you are a dedicated student the class should be no problem. I feel that his passion for the material makes the class a good one. He is active with student organizations on campus adding a sense of community. I recommend the class to those interested in learning. Quality.

I know him and his wife very well. Both great people. I took him during the spring mini. The way he teaches and administers the class is not hard at all. Very easy and a very smooth class each day...nice break time too. Go Bearkats!!
HORRIBLE!! i dreaded this class everyday! He picks favorites and if you're not his favorite he will humiliate you and grade HARD. makes comments about you in front of the class, makes rude comments if you couldn't make it to class. wont let you make anything up. gets angry really easily and goes off on students. i got a D SUPRISINGLY. dont take him
He gives true/false quizzes at the end of the class randomly and you can use the book to answer. His tests are M-C (u can use ur book) and essay (u can use ur notes). He gives u a bank of sample questions, usually they are the same questions on the test. Essay covers important things he went over in class. Overall okay teacher.
I tried very hard to get an A in his class thinking that I would. Of course he gave me a B. I did extra credit, was in his class every morning at 7:30am, and worked hard for an A. He does make you feel dumb in some cases but what professor doesn't.
His lectures are very interesting. Read the book and take good notes. Tests are open book, but you have to know where to look. If you don't read, you will not do well. For the most part, I think his tests are easy and straight forward. If you are willing to study, you should not have any problems. Do extra credit...it helps...I got an A!!!
All I can say is if you need to take philosohpy take Danny Brown... I got a D in Horton's class and then I took Brown and made an easy A... Brown reviews before each class and he's funny too.
he's a nice teacher. His tests are open book and and 250 word essays that are from the reading in the book. write down notes from the readings and you can use it on the test. It can't get any easier than that. make sure u go to class bcz he gives pop quizzes but you can use you notes on them too.
he is great
Good lecturer. Cares about students.
He's is a very nice teacher, strange at times and a little bit eccentic but hey what philosopher isn't. If you need philosophy take him no matter if you just need it or are interested in philosophy. Oh and sign up for his social and political philosophy next semester heard it will be good.

I took his class online. It was definitly one of the hardest classes I have taken at san jac. Not because he is a bad teacher but the subject matter was hard for me to wrap my head around.
Ethics class was so interesting. Must stay caught up on the readings. Be prepared to discuss ideas and be open to new ones. Have a working knowledge of Phil 101. Essays and writing assignments are all in-class, and open book/notes. I would take him again!
Professor Horton's distance learning class was fairly easy. He even gave extra credit for students volunteering or donating items to the Houston EAC. Overall a decent course, but you have to read the entire book. The tests are only 10 questions, but you have to show your understanding of the subject.
Prof Horton was a great teacher. He would never badger you about what you believed. I loved taking his class because he didn't let his own personal views take over the class.*wink wink* In the end, TAKE HIS CLASS!
Horton is a great teacher who loves his subject and is always smiling. He gives a lot of resource to help us study. If you take advantage of them you will do good on his test. Tests are mutiple choice questions and 2 essays that have to be a least 250 words long. You pick the essays from 3 choices . I love the discussions we have. Its a fun class!!
Great class. Challenging professor. I was disappointed there were no virtual classes. My only negative comment would be there was little interaction with our professor. His ability to stimulate, interest and teach is excellent. He was just not very visible.
don't waste your hard earned money on his class. his distance learning class is awful...you can't ever get a response from him, it takes DAYS! and then the response is usually not helpful. be prepared to read the WHOLE book and take 2 essay tests...along with many chapter assignments. he doesn't follow the syllabus either.
Knows perfectly well what he's talking about. Although he makes no attempt to hide his own views, he never once lets them get in the way of teaching, and will never once degrade someone of differing views. Quite the opposite, he enjoys having different viewpoints. Easily one of the best teachers i have ever had.
a nice enough guy who knows his stuff but his internet class is not easy. be prepared to read every chapter in the book and to understand in thoroughly to do well on his essay exams.
Internet class. VERY boring but easy. You will have to read the WHOLE book. He only responds to very short emails but responds quickly. Basically you read, then have 1 hr to answer 10-20 Q's for each chapter. 7 essays including finals. No late grades. Extra credit opportunities.
Proffessor Horton is a WONDERFUL TEACHER! TAKE HIM! Itook the online course, yes you do have to read the book, but is that not purpose of not having to go in for lecutures? He responded to my emails STAT and even returned my calls to discuss theory's I could not understand. He is really into PHIL. so he enjoyed talking with me and I made an "A"!!!!
I took his online class and found it to be interesting but hard. You have to read the book, do the discussion board, assignments, and essay tests. The essay tests can be quite hard unless you are really good at essay tests. It was a good course but do expect to stay up on the assignments or you can get behind. I would take his course again.
I found this course to be more challenging and less interesting. The Prof. makes no attempt to assist his online students. No extra material was given to help give insite on the material. The tests were multiple choice and very tricky.
Thinks he's god's gift to the classroom; arrogant as heck and pushes his own views relentlessly.
I took Mr. Horton for Intro. to Ethics, and Social/Political Philosophy back in 2005 and 2006. He is a bit arrogant, kind of aloof and lost in his own thoughts, although I sincerely believed it is unintentional. His classes really got me on a path of introspection. Thanks to him I love philosophy now. He can be somewhat unhelpful at times, though.
I thought he was weird but when I took him there was no other instructors that taught Philosophy. He was agnostic and enjoyed the non believers and the Christians arguing against each other in class. I hated his class.
I found this course to be extremely challenging and uninteresting. The Prof. makes zero attempt to assist his online students and doesn't even give a clear answer to emails. The tests were very tricky and hard to answer even when you have read the chapter material. By far the worst professor I have ever had. Ruined any interest I had in the subjec
Took his class online, you MUST read the textbook since it is online. His "essay" questions are easy... Your response should be about 3-5 sentences long...Take it if you have time to read all the text and remember the due dates! Other than that he's easy!
Took this class online, it is so easy. Everything comes out of the book and he gives you enough time on tests and quizzes that you can do the assignment by looking up the questions. There are only 2 tests with 4 essay questions each, and then weekly 20 multiple choice question quizzes and a discussion board response. Really simple.
Online course: Really good professor. Always interacts with students via discussion board and answers questions/emails on time. Chapter assignments are easy if you read the book. Tests are ESSAY questions which is super easy if you read the book. HINT: Must read the book to pass this course.
I took Mr. Horton for Intro PHIL 1301, I liked his methods so much and him as a professor I took all his classes as my electives. He makes the concepts of philosophy something you can grasp. I can see how he could be a challenge online, however he is still a great professor.
Great online class. One assignment and discussion board per chapter and 2 exams. Prof Horton participates in discussion boards which is helpful. Read the book, do the assignments, should do WELL.
You WILL need to read the text book. Do not skim through it, this will do nothing for you. The discussions require your true knowledge on the subject. The subject is difficult to understand but you have to understand fully in order to pass. Teacher participates. Overall, the teacher is clear cut and precise on assignments. He will make you learn.
One assignment plus a discussion board due each week and only two essay tests and a final. The philosophers are not easy to understand, but the professor is helpful in understanding topics. Textbook was not needed.
The textbook is not required but strongly suggest studying the readings and power points provided. Ask questions, he is glad to elaborate and explain. Read all the discussion board posts as he comments and tells important items to know. Good class to take online.
I took this professor for intro to philosophy and he always helped and was very passionate about philosophy. I would highly reccommend.
Does not require a textbook. He expects you to read the readings from the Internet that he posts. I felt like I was on my own with no help. The readings of the philosophers were so confusing and he didn't help me much to clarify them. Do not take online maybe in class would of been better for me. I made a D so that should tell you it wasn't easy
This teacher was very humdrum (boring). His readings were uninteresting and very hard to comprehend. His quizzes were easy if you worked for it. He often babies you as he has class rules which is unusual for college students. He randomly laughs to himself. If you had a question he would answer it, but when lecturing he went WAY to fast. Hard class.
One of the best professors I've had in a while. I would strongly encourage taking him. Obviously if you don't try you won't make a good grade but if you put effort into what he's teaching and participate in class you will do well. He will always answer questions after class and he cares about his students understanding over grades. GREAT PROF!
He is an amazing teacher. My favorite so far. He was my teacher at HCC for humanities. Not really interested in the class until I actually took it. It was such an amazing experience I'm going to take another one of his classes just for the experience! !!!
Will not respond to emails, I had an issue opening Power points he provided to complete assignments and I could not open them, I emailed him twice about the issue and never got any response about it. He will not leave comments on essays, just gives you the grade without explanation why. Starting to dislike online classes...
His lectures are long and boring. I feel like he gives too much info, I taught myself better looking at philosophy videos on YouTube. Sometimes he is a smartass and makes you feel dumb. I barely passed, I'm glad I'm done with this course. Not impossible to pass, you must stay focused to pass his course, don't slack off, again its not hard!
This teacher is very good when it comes to sharing his knowledge of philosophy. Quizzes are easy as well as the test just study for them. Encourages people to be on time for his lecture. There is no textbooks but he puts the readings online so be sure you read them before going to his class because he does pop quizzes. Do not miss any quizzes!!!!!!
