Brilliant teacher! Midterm & Final exam will give you nightmares, but if you mermorize your 3 essays well & apply those in mult. choice, you'll get a B. Make sure to copy ALL notes so buying book will be unnecessary unless you want further understanding.

Love Kottel/no lecture packet/Lectures are detailed/material is difficult/Some extra credit/2 unknowns/helps if you stay in lab/3 lec tests are VERY hard. No****tests. Essay Qs are given in advance and are LONG and involved. Must remember lab results.

EXCELLENT teacher!!! VERY fair; explains well & writes all important facts on board. Good quiz/test review sessions. Study notes & you'll do well. No regular HW. Weekly lab quiz = easy. Essay questions given out WEEKS before test! ;-)

Dr K is the best biology teacher I ever had. He is very easy to approach and ask questions. Lecture tests are tough, but not impossible. To do well on essay questions take good notes and answer the questions exactly from your notes. Take his class!!!

very challenging class!! can not fall behind, MUST study and review all notes and memorize especially for lab tests. Practice essay test questions as early as possible.talks alot and lectures can get boring, but he gets excited about micro, very helpful& approachable,worked my butt off but got a 'C'

Excellent teacher. The class is challenging, but like any other challenging class, you have to work for your grade. Kottel is probably one of the best instructors I have ever had. Solid teacher, organized, sharp, and patient. Highly recommend. You will learn a lot just by the nature of the class.

This teacher is awesome. To the other comment about him being only nice to white girls, thats crap! I am far from white and he was very helpful to me and to anyone who wanted help. Its a hard class but if you really study you will do well. Take the essay questions very seriously.

Dr. Kottel is an awesome teacher. He does actually speed through the lecture but takes his time answering any questions. He gives out a ton of extra credit. The lab does not require any at home work, with one exception. I am Asian and he treated me like he does everyone else, with courtesy. Take this class, it's the whole package really.

Dr. Kottel you are the "BEST", HIGHLY recommended, very patient,very educated and gives out a lot of extra credit. He does write a lot for your own good for the incoming midterm. Two midterm with essay question (easy, pick what you want and be ready on the test)He is a very nice and wonderful teacher pls do not take advantage of him.BEST TEACHER!

This guy knows a ton about micro. Class isnt too hard, dont buy the lecture book. Notes are very clear. 2 midterms and a final. essay q's for midrterms are given early and you pick. Lots of extra credit. If you are a girl and do your work you will get an A pretty easily.Nice guy and is there to help you out. Labs are easy, work on solving unknowns

No favoritism whatsoever,if you're a good student,you do your work and study,you're awarded accordingly. Don't buy the book, or lab book, or Bergey's manual.I didnt have any and I got an A. Just study whatever he writes on the board and thats all the info you need to get A..or whatever your goal is. Besides that he is helpful and a great person.

THE BEST MICROBIOLOGY TEACHER IN THE WORLD!!! Just read the other reviews and you'll understand why. He's taking the summer off so if your thinking about taking it with anyone else, don't. Wait until the fall and avoid a big headache. Not an easy subject to begin with. Goodluck!

He's awesome. Exams are fairly easy, need to memorize a lot of materials, but he makes it so much fun. Extra credits are ava. He really tries to know every single student that he has. Super nice. To good to be a professor. Need to put effort in his exams. Don't expect for a super easy A, you really need to know the materials!

Dr. Kottel takes a hard, boring subject and makes the best of it. He is SO smart and knowledgable. This class is hard but he really gives you all the information you need to succeed. Lab is fun and interesting, lecture is pretty boring. If you have to take this class, take it with Kottel.

Students voted him teacher of the year this semester and he deserved every vote and then some. Loves teaching and the subject he teaches. He makes a tough class very interesting and fun. I made the mistake of purchasing books. Don't. All you need is written on the board or told to you :) What an extremely intelligent professor.

He's not as easy as everyone makes him seem. He does make a difficult subject as easy as possible. You still have to study hard and the material is difficult. But he is definitely the best in san diego. Take him before anyone else and dedicate the entire semester to this subject!

He is such a nice, helpful, teacher. This class is hard but he does a great job of teaching this class. If you have any questions he very approachable. Go to class everyday and write your essays prior to taking the exam and you should do good. Oh and Study a lot.

great professor! very passionate about micro, makes the class very fun to attend. Very helpful. the class itself is not easy so you just have to study really hard and you'll earn your grade. Tests are not easy,but right off his lecture, no books require. Make sure right good notes. No lab report, but there are quiz and lab practicals they're easy.

Dr. Kottel is by far the BEST teacher for Microbiology. He is very helpful and fair with grades. Study a lot and take good notes and you will succeed in this class. Dr. Kottel is very knowlegeable about this subject and makes it a fun class.

Microbiology IS one tough subject~a lot of details are involved, especially in the essay finals, but Prof. Kottel is very patient and considerate to his students. How wonderful it would be if other Bio Profs. could have the same patience and practical teaching approach like Prof. Kottel. I highly recommend him to all Bio students.

MICROBIOLOGY ~ That is one tough course, but I really feel fortunate to have taken Prof. Kottel's class and be happy with the results of my grade. I wasn't very happy that I spent so much for the textbook, because everything on the exams and quizzes are based solely on his lectures.

Dr. Kottel is honestly one of the best professors out there. He is very helpful and instructs such a wonderful and interesting class. I would recommend him to all students taking micro. Make sure you study though because this class isn't a breeze but take Dr. Kottel- you will learn so much and gain so much knowledge from this class. He rocks!!

Excellent all around, clear, concise, helpful 4 hard subject, text useful only for majors, extra credit avail., great personality, take notes, important 2 attend regularly 2 keep up & have notes, learned lots, tough subject but this is the way to go, uses scantron, hard part is the detailed essays (u pic 2) req'd for 2 midterms/1 final - do it now!

Best bio teacher ever! He is tough on tests. Write everything he says. Take great notes. All exam questions are from the notes. Don't be afraid to ask questions. You will need to STUDY hard to get an A. Extra credit is available. Textbook wasn't necessary.

Great teacher! Take good notes for both lec & lab and study every single sentence he writes. Take the midterm essays very seriously & be descriptive. Don't buy the textbooks. I took this class with a sociology class and to tell you the truth, this micro class may not be as hard as you think. But if you were to take a micro class, take Dr. Kottel!

Dr. Kottel is an amazing professor. He is more than willing to help students. You must put in the work as for any science if you want to get an A. There are only 3 tests so your grades def count! Dr. Kottel is always available when needed. Do not miss any class sessions, always ask q's, study his notes inside and out for both lecture and lab quizzes/tests. Start working on his essays study guide when provided in advance since he can be picky with the essays portion. Tests are not easy so make sure to study hard and don?t slack off.

Dr. Kottel is a very nice, extremely knowledgeable professor. Don't expect this class to be a breeze. Study the lecture/lab notes inside and out, down to the minute details. Super cool! Excellent lecturer, extremely intelligent, funny, down to earth, great sense of humor. He really makes a challenging subject fun. He works with you if you're struggling and is very generous in his grading. Show interest, respect and willingness to succeed and you will do well. Don't by the textbook, you wont need it. Dr. Kottel is amazing! Im not the strongest science student(B average)and was dreading taking micro. BUT! I took it with Kottel and got an A! He is extremely clear, gives ample extra credit, and super helpful. Didn't buy any textbooks, tests from notes. Best micro teacher ever, one of the best teachers Ive ever had.

AMAZING!! He's extremely nice, helpful and clear. Do NOT buy or rent the textbooks. They are only used for referencing. All tests and exams are literally from his notes. Study front and back...genus,species,etc. I keep hearing rumors that Spring 2014 will be his last semester...I hope not. He's truly the best micro professor Mesa has.

Professor Kottel was very understanding and helped me in each step to make it through the semester so I could pass. Great guy and teacher.

His lecture can be a bit dry and the exams require a lot of memorization of long words and terms, but he is a great teacher and you can tell he really loves what he teaches. You're graded almost entirely on exams, so studying is important. Also, you don't need a textbook in his class.

Dr. Kottel is hands down my favorite Professor in the SDCCD. Very well spoken and dedicated to his area of expertise. Student expectations are clear and concise as is his presentation of course material. Grades are primarily based on exams. This class is challenging to be sure, well polished study skills required!

Honestly my favorite professor ever. He's so nice and mellow. You can tell that he is passionate about microbiology and he seems like a caring person. To me, he was very clear in lecture, and especially in lab. Lab is so fun by the way! This class requires A LOT of studying, but what science class doesn't? Highly recommend.
