Very easygoing and interesting. Every lecture is clear cut. Very approachable.
Vague, boring, meanie sometimes
great lectures, interestind clear adn concise, also easy material
i remember his class being really interesting and fun, but he's way too marxist. and he seems to think we're all stupid. c'mon, professor, everyone knows egypt is in africa! you don't need to lecture us about that for half an hour!
Treats his students like they are idiots. A condescending man with a small mind.
He's a little scary. He seems like an all around nice guy though. You dont want to talk in his class though, because he'll call you out in front of 400 people and make you pack your s*** and go home
I found him to be quite amusing--what college prof. comes to the first day of class dressed as Indiana Jones complete with a whip!? LOL Nice guy though, easy to talk to outside of classroom setting.
Snotty jerk. Real attitude problem.
Interesting lectures, but a little condescending
Good teacher, but tests can be rediculous at times, especially the essays.
Nice guy, easy to talk to. Exams and essays seem easy, but are difficult. He, however, does not grade them, so its the TA's who give the harsh grades. Can be boring at time and other times interesting.
explains material very well, and is always open for answering questions. tests can be very difficult because there are books you must read for each exam as well as the lecture material. kicks people out of class when they talk too much.good sense of humor
Lots of fun, but definatley don't talk in his class. Didn't find him to be a lot of help outside of class, either. Good Anthro class to take though
Mickey-G is the greatest lecturer I have ever come across. His passion for the material is infectious and his vigalecture-extravanganzas filled with countless swearing and British-style tossings are enthralling. The hot rating is for his daughter KATHY!
Greatest lecturer I have ever had in college, but this class involves mostly memorizing facts. I can honestly say, this is the only class I've taken thus far that I will not get anything out of. Tests this semester were quite hard.
Great guy, great professor. His antics in class are amusing and keep your attention(swearing and smashing things). His tests are not that bad as long as you do the work. His TA`s were arrogant though, and harsh in grading your tests.
Great teacher. Does excellent lectures and is there for the students.
Good lecturer, seems pompus. Kicks people out of lecture for talking, even if it's about the material. Enjoys his campus reputation as a hard ass. Assigns readings in excess of 75 pages per week. Enjoy the lectures, but be prepared to work hard.
Great Professor! I took this class my second semester of senior year, just for the credits. Had a great time in it, actually contacted Professor McGuire when preparing a lesson on the Anasazi, since I'm a history teacher myself. He was very helpful.
The Lectures are really interesting with very well put together powerpoint and slide presentations. Excellent Speaker! The exam essays were a little tricky. Sarah Chicone was a great T.A.!
Great lecturer! I always enjoyed going to class. The tests aren't that hard, especially when he gives you 3 previous ones to study from. I wasn't a fan of all the group work and group papers, but it did help with the studying.
I don't know what everyone is talking about. He made interesting material boring... he yells all the time even with the mic on and he asks ridiculous questions on the tests. He knows his stuff but he can't teach it
Good guy but way to much work for an intro anthro class.
Native American history was a fabolous class. Prof. McGuire is very passionate about the subject and lectures reflect this...TAKE THIS CLASS!
seemed at the mercy of TA grading, which was inconsistant and unpredictable. gotta know a lot for tests. mcguire needs to chill about yelling at talkers. professor's fantasy girl is buffy sainte-marie, who he is going to impress with his cowboy boots.
Good lectures but more than a little pompous. There's alot of reading and your grade is left to the mercy of a TA
This guy really knows his stuff. He's passionate about it too. The class is pretty challenging, but worth taking if your interested in Native Americans.
great teacher
Dr. McGuire is an excellent lecturer. The group work however is absurd. 5 people writing a 1500 word essay is excessive, and having members of your own group rate you for a grade is absolutely ridiculous. We don't pay him so I can do his job of grading
Great class, great professor!
probably the worst class i have taken in binghamton. dont waste your time with this annoyance of a class. Tests are hard.
Good guy...looks like Jules Trammel sounds like Neil Young
This guy is exciting, challenging, and dynamic. Take a class with him if you can.
The ratings on Dr. M sort the children from the adults. He makes you work for your A but he isn't stingy with them. He's a great teacher with a good solid handle on his subject who isn't afraid to learn from his students or admit when he doesn't know. As for judging him by his boots... Grow up.
His lectures are clear, however, he pretends very well to care about what you have to say which makes it hard to argue your problems with group members b/c they establish your grade.
lectures are VERY well organized. He makes it very clear what info you need to kno, and what you dont. I thought it was an interesting class and its worth takin... there isnt very much homework, and what there is, isnt very hard
His lectures are very interesting. He knows how to make the lessons entertaining. This is the only lecture class I like in Binghamton.
Think-pair-share and 1 minute papers, these things are terrible what a waste of time. Class started off good now its dreadful to go to and its not like I am doing bd in it either.
Nice guy. Some lectures are kool and others are a bit dull, but he does what he can to make the material interesting. tests can be easy or mad hard depending on how lucky you are. wasn't too fond of the papers either, but they do help a lot. You will be forced to learn in his class.
dont attempt to argue a point he doesnt agree with, even though you may be completely right. combative and argumentative to other views, overtly subjective grader. thinks and tries to argue too much about fields other than anthropology that he doesnt really know about.
Professor not helpful at all and class is entirely based on group work. Also grade is based solely on TA.
Some people do not like the group work in this class but it works for me. I have always found Professor McGuire very helpful and easy to approach. He is one of the best teachers at Binghamton
he's a cool professor, he's funny and teaches well. He can help you if you have any questions. if you take a class with him, you'll rmember it for a long time. (BTW, he looks like jerry springer, lol)
Dr McGuire is an entertaining lecturer and he does a great job of presenting the class material in an organized way. If you approach him he is very helpful. One of Binghamton's best teachers.
He is a decent lecturer. But he seems to forget that not everyone is not an anthropologist. The TAs are useless and don't know what they are talking about and there is no one you can really turn to when you need help. I have a 3.8 average in school, but I struggled through this class more than any other.

Mr Mcguire taught me that you don't have to be intelligent to be a doctor. His lectures are little more than an endless assault of his opinions. tests are on the same. Good luck getting a straight, consise answer out of the TA's, they love hearing themselves talk. assignments are convoluted and vague. Don't get drawn in by intriguing class title
this guy loves talking about himself and arizona..85 minute lectures could be taught in 30 but i usually went anyway bc he doesnt post the slides online or anything like that. overall mildly amusing class. he throws out a lot of jokes out there, i didnt think he was funny though.whatever,, good enough professor.
I think he is the most extraordinary proffessor at the university. I was never bored in his class and he always did something to gain the attention of the class. The one thing that he never likes is to talk in his class but I think this is a fair request because he does everything to take the attention of the student.

It looks like some students don't like McGuire because he wears cowboy boots and he expresses his own opinions in class. If you want some boring recitation of facts for lectures you do not want his class. If you want a professor who will challange you, keep your attention in class and help you learn he is your man.
Truly a wonderful teacher who clearly knows and loves his work. But, like everybody says, he insists on group-work, maybe in an attempt to contribute a general cooperative spirit to the world. But being forcibly placed with very difficult and, sorry, stupid people is nothing but depressing and lonesome. I was so confident in my abilities before.
Perhaps the best lecturer I've encountered. He is dynamic, interesting and kind of funny too! Clearly has great passion for his work. Prior to the class, I had little interest in the field, but is now shaping to be a topic I would base a career on.
McGuire is knowledgable and can be interesting, but his class became an absolute pain with the group work. I understand what he was trying to do in organizing his class like that, but it just doesn't work. Maybe it's just my group, but it ruined the class for me. Class became very frustrating and irritating, not really worth the hassle.
McGuire is a great professor and really shows his interest in the topics which makes it more interesting to learn about. However, the group-work aspect is a bit tiresome. I have no problem with analyzing questions in group discussion but expecting 5 people to write one 3-4 page essay is a little ridiculous.
Professor McGuire is easily the greatest teacher I've ever had. He has an unbridled enthusiasm for what he does and is very knowledgeable on the subject. His lectures are engaging and informative. His lectures also prepare you very well for the exams. There is nothing more I would like to do before I die than to have a beer with Dr. McGuire.
McGuire is the man, he makes class interesting and makes it easy to come to class. He really enjoys his work and wants to make it interesting for the class. The discussion assignments are ridiculously easy, the tests are a bit harder but still dont require much studying if you go to class. If there is one teacher I want to have a beer with, hes it!
Great lecturer but you got to study in his classes.
Oh, Professor McGuire, you were fantastic! Thank you for an interesting class that I actually looked forward to attending.
Gotta love Randy, but he has faults. I've taken 3 courses from him + whether he is the most helpful guy in the world or a useless prick is pretty much dependent on his mood. He keeps his TAs on a short leash so they're on the same page, but they don't answer what he didn't cover. If he likes you you're golden so get noticed and get on his good side
Combative, opinionated and also extremely well prepared; provides thorough, well structured lectures. A hard grader to get used to but does provide clear feedback as to what expectations are and will work with you to get on track.
I've taken two of his classes and have loved both. He is really a great teacher, although you really must put the work in to achieve good grades.
He was a really interesting lecturer, and had a lot of really cool experiences that he shared with the class. His tests were a little hard, but he was straight forward about what was on it and put practice exams on blackboard. It's a really fun class and he's a brilliant lecturer!
Great lecturer and an exciting class. You do have to work hard though. Difficult but fair tests.
An very interesting lecturer, passionate about his subject & tries to keep a sense of humor about it. If aren't completely dense & show up to class, you'll be fine. We did have the exam literally the LAST day of finals, on Friday at 8:30 AM, so nobody could go to bar crawl or enjoy their week, so hopefully he never does that to anybody again.
Deserves a chili pepper
Probably the best professor I've had thus far. He truly has a passion for what he does and his lectures are somehow always interesting. It's not bad at all, and if you do the readings and come to lecture, you should do well on tests. Just don't do anything you shouldn't. He's thrown many people out of lecture. Dr. McGuire is the man.
Gotta Love Randy!!! He was an amazing teacher who made every single lecture different and interesting. He has great stories and can be funny.Very clear and teaches stuff that's on the test. All of the papers aren't that bad. He puts on a lot of movies too! P.S. He's always wanted the chili pepper so I gave him one
Reading over the notes while studying for the midterms, a lot of it is unclear. I somewhat wished he would elaborate, because he moves on fast without explanation. He is an easy-going professor who loves what he does, but the class wasnt at all what i expected it to be. I took it for an elective and immediately regretted it.
Randy has been an awesome professor this semester. I took the class knowing it would be somewhat interesting and was surprised that each lecture was taught with enthusiasm that kept the students actively engaged. Just study the notes and kind of read the books if you want to do well on the tests. Essays are easy and tests are not that bad either.
Really nice guy and a great professor. Well-structured lectures that have clear points. Tests are on both the lecture and the reading, so put the time in for both. I didn't think his class was too hard, but my grade was lower than I expected.
Challenging professor and a great lecturer.
His lectures are generally pretty boring even though it is decently interesting subject matter. He freaks out if you talk at all or go on your phone and may throw you out of the class. The tests are a little challenging but you can probably pass with a B+ or A- without reading the textbooks at all.
Had him for Anth 125. The reading is useless to the class really because it's not that prevalent but they catch you with three or four questions from it on the tests and it is sometimes needed for the essays. His PowerPoints and lectures seem to lack structure so they get confusing. He's funny but he gets off-topic too much. Overal, fairly easy.
This is a really interesting class taught by an interesting professor. He is always changing things up in lecture. He is demanding though.
Randy McGuire is a great professor. His lectures were easy to follow and often entertaining. He clearly loves his work and is always open to questions. The group work was painful but a necessary evil. The tests were easy if you looked over the previous tests posted online and went through your notes. Don't be lazy, do the readings.
Great professor. He is really into archaeology and an interesting lecturer.
Great professor. He is very enthusiastic about his work and often shares his personal experiences with the class during lecture. He is open to questions and doesn't overwhelm students with work..
It's an interesting class if you care to pay attention. Good lectures, keeps it interesting. Discussions are mandatory and help a lot. The books are long but a couple test questions come from them, although it's more worth it to save yourself the time and get them wrong. Great professor overall.
Dr McGurie really tries to keep this class interesting with jokes and stories. He is dedicated to archaeology and I found he greatly increased my interest in archaeology.
He never got a pepper so I'm giving him one!Great professor, makes you interested in the class and knowledgeable.
I'll give you a chilli pepper Professor McGuire!
Pretty funny guy. Just stay on top of your work and you'll be fine. He's always available for questions, so just go up to him after class if you didn't understand anything. I honestly just didn't study the material that hard and got the grade I deserved. DON'T BE LAZY
Professor McGuire was pretty good and engaging. Going to lecture was not mandatory, but it definitely helped, as his tests were fairly dependent on things he said in lecture.
Prof. Mcguire is a great guy. This was the first anthropology course I took and it was actually pretty interesting. The class is relatively time consuming, and attending lectures is important unless you have a friend in the class that can email you the notes. Group work was a necessary evil, but if you get a good group it can be a grade booster.
Good class for a easy gen-ed
A lot of reading and busy work with reading and discussion, but he makes what is a not that fascinating subject, a lot more enjoyable. He made archaeology into an enjoyable topic. Not an easy A, but do the work and you will definitely earn your grade, which in many people's cases was an A! He truly is passionate about the subject!
One of my favorite classes ever. Easy A if you go to class and coordinate the group projects well. Readings are mostly optional.
To be honest, I learned one thing in the class, archaeology is useless. The main issue i had was the lack of clarity he had in regards with the essays. Both with the actual assignment and his justification for the grade that was given. He also freaks out at people during his lectures.
Dont plan to take this class as an easy gen ed. This is by far the most difficult 100s level course I have taken here. The test avgs are usually Ds and the tests are made up of very few very specific questions pertaining to facts that you come across once in the 80pg's of reading he assigns each week. TAs are incompetent - save yourself and drop it
There is a lot of reading and writing for his class, and the group work can be hard if you dont have a good group. However, he teaches with a passion that cannot be faked and his love of native cultures is infectious. Pay attention and read and you can get a good grade, take a class with this prof. if you want to love anthropology
Prof. McGuire is one of the most passionate teachers at Bing. He's very knowledgable in his field and the material overall is relatively easy. The issue with this class is that there is a lot of reading and a lot of information to know for each test. Although the tests are easy, you must know EVERYTHING. For a lvl 100 it is slightly too much work.
Was surprised to find that I liked anthropology as much as I did. He is easy to understand and makes lectures enjoyable with his humor. He also has clear-cut notes on slides in lecture and provides old exams for optional review (which were very helpful)
He's a great professor. It was a lot of reading, and he has high expectations of the students, but worth it. I was never interested in Archaeology but he made it interesting, especially when he put in his corny archaeological comics he's found online. He encourages questions in classes. Do not use your phone in class though!
As an extension to my past comment----The best part is he gives past exams, so even though some questions are on discrete topics, if you complete the past exams, you will know what to study. There's often the same question over and over through the exams. And there are 3 papers but maximum of 3 pages each. Actually harder to make them short enough.
He's been doing this for a while and has it down perfectly. If you ever want to teach yourself take his class to see how it is done. Funny sometimes as well. Other faculty hate him because of office politics but that is unrelated to helping undergraduates. I learned a lot but you have to be interested. Take him!
Great lecturer
The class is only out of 400 points. They grade the essays super harshly and you need to read the textbook because he puts random information on the tests. This class is not an easy A and not worth taking just for a gen ed.
Very conflicted on him. On one hand, he's a clear lecturer and makes a boring subject slightly better. On the other hand, this class is really dumb. Most of it gives a way-too-broad interpretation of history and you memorize useless dates and facts. Decent lecturer, but avoid this class; it's everything you wished you left behind in high school.
Overall he made the lectures pretty interesting (if you are into this topic). Good at answering any questions, clear on the information necessary to know. Must do the readings in the incredibly long books to be able to take exams though.
take any class with him. he's fire. I took anthro 125- Archaeology. Not only interesting, but made the class extremely fun and not too hard.
In the middle about this course.. although the lectures are easy going and the readings aren't terrible, the exams don't always seem to match up with the information we've learned. But he does provide his past tests- which definitely help since there are repeated questions. Personally, the course was too broad
Literally took this class thinking it was a easy gen-Ed and because it had such a good rating here and it turned out to be one of my hardest classes. The tests are excruciatingly hard and the class averages are around 60s-70s. The essays he gives before the tests are also long and tedious. Don't take this class.
NEVER EVER TAKE THIS CLASS. He is a horrible professor and is so full of himself. The tests don't even match anything we talked about in lecture and you're expected to read 3 full textbooks. This class is killing my GPA for applying to med school. I repeat don't take this class. Not an Easy A gen Ed by any means !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I hated this class
Honestly, take a different anthro. class. First, this is a gen. ed and like most people you want a good and relatively easy to obtain grade, however, that just won't happen too easily for this class. It's not because the material is hard because it's not it is that the tests are horribly inconsistent. Second, the TA grading is really TERRIBLE !
horrible professor tests are so hard and will literally ruin your gpa. took it as a writing class but the tests are so hard and will make your fail
Dr. McGuire is a great teacher in Anth 125. His lectures are well organized and interesting, sometimes a bit funny. He takes a theatrical approach in some of the lectures. He is available to students and cares about them. Do not take this course if you want an easy A. As the sour grapes reviews here say he expects you to work.
I would not recommend taking this class. It is a lot of writing, since it is a W course, and the material is generally boring. The textbook readings are horrible to try and get through. If you are looking for an easy A, this isn't the class for you.
The only grades in this class were 3 tests and 4 papers. All papers were done in groups which made them pretty easy. These are the same groups you meet with in discussion every week. Paying attention in lecture is necessary, but topics and the professor were interesting. Readings helped, but definitely weren't necessary to do well.
A lot of exam questions were made on such obscure details, but it seemed like the TA's made the exams so I supposed that's not on him. His lectures are extremely boring; he thinks he's funny, but he's not. He hasn't really changed the material since the late 90s, including the readings which are sometimes unreasonable for a lower level ed class.
Dr McGuire has amazing lectures, aside from the days we watch movies, if you don't read the text and just pay attention in class, you'll do just fine. Tests are relatively easy.
Funny and somewhat interesting lectures. Only criticism is that his exams were broad and included very little information from topic we covered in lecture. I felt like most of his multiple choice questions were random. The MC is what hurt my grade :/
I guess Dr. McGuire is disappointing to those people who want an easy A. I found him to be a great lecturer, caring about students and interesting. He knows his topic well and teaches it well. One of the best at Binghamton.
Very disappointed with this class. The content is not hard, but he artificially inflates the difficulty of the course (I'm guessing because he feels the need to convince others archaeology isn't a joke). It's all busy work, and was never stimulating. No feedback was given either. He knows this too which is why he doesn't post a SOOT for himself.
Professor McGuire is an amazing lecturer and person. He really does care about his students. That being said, this is not an easy class. The tests require a lot of studying, but the essays are pretty simple to write. The tests are graded pretty harshly, but you will probably get a 100 on every paper. This class is definitely worth taking.
Lectures are boring and hard to engage with. Content of the course is bland and boring. My biggest gripe with Mr. McGuire is that anthropology is a field that little to no people nowadays care about, and that 99% of the students in this class are taking it for a gen ed credit, but he forces students to study it as much as their major classes.
I loved this class with Professor McGuire. He is an amazing lecturer and the tests are really based on his lectures and the textbooks. He spaces out his assignments so nothing is truly overwhelming except the readings. Getting an A is definitely doable, but you'll have to put in some work for it. I would definitely take this class again if I could!
This class wasn't awful, but you definitely have to work hard. Professor McGuire said the first day if you were looking for an easy A, you were in the wrong class. The papers are self-explanatory while the tests are more difficult, and you need to read the textbooks to understand the material. The lectures may be long, but are obviously helpful.
Randall is a great professor and his lectures are very interesting, just be prepared to work for your grade. He assigns a ridiculous amount of readings, but the exams are only 20% readings and 80% lecture material, so if you take good notes you can get an A without doing any of them.
Randy McGuire cares about his work and it definitely shows. He puts a lot of effort into his lectures and is a great professor. Makes a lot of jokes and incorporates a lot of cartoon comics in his lectures that rarely land but it's nice that he's light-hearted. The lectures can be boring but he does his best to make them interesting.
Great professor, tries to entertain in lectures often to no avail but is easy and interesting to listen to. Not a class to skip lectures for. I only went to these and didn't read the textbook and so far am faring fine.
There are three tests and three essays for this class. Took this class for gen ed, don't ever take it. The essay prompts make no sense and take hours to figure out if you want a good grade. Actually have to read tons of textbook pages. Doesn't review for tests, have fun. Long, boring, tedious lectures. Calls you out in class directly.
Good professor, class is very easy. You don't really have to go to his lectures because they're all on his website, and your TA will go over them anyway when you meet once a week which is very helpful. Even in a lecture of 400 people he WILL call you out for talking or being on your phone, but he is an amusing guy and has great stories to tell.
Dr. McGuire is an interesting lecturer who tries to make his lectures entertaining although he does not always succeed. Most of the complaints against him seem to be sour grapes from people who expected an easy A and did not get it. You do have to work in his class.
I literally love this man so much, he makes archaeology jokes in class, he cares about his students and his topic of study. 100% will call you out for being on your phone in lecture, super bold, I love it. Literally so many opportunities to gain points back like on essay rewrites. Great professor, even better guy. Live love my man Randy
There aren't enough characters to explain how much I love this man. Great class, great professor. He'll call you out for being on your phone, but he's so sweet and cares so much about his students. Accommodating, funny, and passionate about his field. Can't get better than Randy McGuire, I promise you.
Professor McGuire is undoubtedly one of the best teachers and lecturers I have ever had. He is energetic, funny, interesting, and a pleasure to talk to. Overall his course was rather easy and where attendance to lecture was not mandatory it is highly recommended. One of the best teachers at Binghamton in my opinion though!
He is a great professor, easy to communicate with but most of your questions and concerns first get to your TA. The enitre class is based off of group projects (3 exams and 4 essays) but dont worry it wont be a situtation of one groupmate does more than the other because he heavily grades the students individually so everyone actually does the work
This class was good, not too hard just come to class or take a look at the slides he sends after every lecture and do the homework and you should be fine for the exams (its four exams but they are not too hard) the third one was the hardest also the final is cumulative but has more of the last unit than the past three.
There is a decent amount of reading for this class. The group project format is unique, but it's done in a way that means everyone will carry their weight. Prof is charismatic and passionate about the topic, plus this is one class I genuinely believe expanded my world view. 100% recommend
Professor McGuire was one of my favorite professors at Bing. A real down-to-Earth guy and clearly cares about his students. His lectures were interesting and he always tried his hardest to engage his students. Easy grader and the class was mainly based on group work which made for an easy A. Would recommend for a GenEd.
Professor McGuire is a real gem! I learned so much about Native American culture and he was so passionate about the subject. I took him last semester and he was great both on/offline. The group format is intimidating but he makes sure everyone holds their weight. There is a lot of content but its manageable and the grades are fair. I recommend!
Every class I have taken with Randy makes me feel more confident about becoming an anthro major. He is the best guy and honestly wants everyone to do well. Very flexible and loves talking to students outside of class.
The best professor at Binghamton!!! We love Randy. Hes so passionate about what hes teaching and he really has the best lectures. The one thing about this class that sucked was the group component, but I doubt theyll do that again with everything online. Hes literally so sweet. I declared an anthro minor to take more of his classes.
Dr. McGuire is truly an awesome professor! He's super knowledgeable about the material and passionate. The workload isn't that bad, but some of the discussion and final questions were pretty specific. Group essays kind of sucked but your grade definitely won't suffer from it because you do individual peer evaluations. Learned a lot from this class!
He is the sweetest guy. The lectures were prerecorded and all we had to do was watch them by the end of the week. He always adds jokes and is so kind hearted, and the lectures are actually pretty interesting. We only had 3 take home tests that were pretty time consuming but doable. Love this guy!!!!
He is really funny and obviously cares about his students, as well as his area of teaching. I like how he shares his experience as an anthropologist and makes boring topics fun with his cartoons and jokes. He also is very accommodating and kind
Randy is the BEST!! The entire class talks about how funny and sweet he is, even thought we never met him. All the lectures are prerecorded but his personality still shines through. He is very smart and very experienced, a great person to talk to if youre interested in anthropology. Always wants to help you learn, just a super genuine guy :) 5/5
Randy is the goat
Legend
I will take every single class Randy offers. Hands down best professor at Bing. Super caring. This course was rough though. It is a C course, so lots of essays, but at least it is Randy grading them. Shows videos and brings in guests to keep the class authentic and really cares about the subject. Has many stories about his time w/ Native Americans.
Randy is very kind and helpful. He makes sure to keep everyone interested even during Panapto lectures. He is very experienced and has a lot of knowledge about the field. I would recommend him 100%.
Professor McGuire is amazing. The Panopto lectures are straightforward and interesting. The format of the class is clear and the workload is very manageable. This is especially appreciated in a pandemic world in the online classroom. Discussion section was entertaining and informative and my TA was amazing!! Awesome class. Awesome professor.
Great professor, I would definitely recommend him.
He was great and super interesting. The class was online, but he did a great job making it work! Would highly recommend!
Absolute gem of a guy, youll love him. Once wore a toilet seat on his head in class, and loves to tell stories about his archeology days. Take his class
Only take this class if you are genuinely interested in the subject. I took ANTH 125 for a gen ed requirement, and completely regret it. The material is relatively vague and boring, and the TAs are also extremely slow at uploading grades for exams and assignments for this class.
Don't take this class. TA's are awful and grade so harshly. Exams are straightforward with 10 MC 10 short answer (60%) but the other 40% counts for a take home essay with very confusing prompts and harsh grading from TAs. He is also not the friendliest person and gives smart remarks to simple questions. assignments are pretty easy though.
He is so boring in lecture, although some of the topics are interesting. You are graded on 3 tests, which include an essay for each one. Other than that. you basically do nothing in this class except read the textbook until the test date is approaching. Ps: few people actually read the books and he asks a lot of questions about it on the tests
Randy is a fascinating dude with experience in archaeological projects around the world. Despite many students claiming that this course is too difficult and yada yada, this course genuinely asks very little from students. The few assignments are discussed in detail in discussion sections and exams are based on a combination of textbook/notes.
Class is an absolute joke. Randy is a cool guy, but lackluster professor, the tests are pretty much impossible to fully prepare for. Aside from that, the TAs grade everything, and one TA likes to take out his frustrations while grading tests and papers, (you know who you are) so grading is basically russian roulette. Far from an easy A.
This class is excessively difficult just for a Gen Ed. The tests are impossible to prepare for and are graded very harshly. He gives practice exams that have very little to do with the actual subject material and the essay prompts always seem to be written by someone who doesn't know English or what this class is about. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
I initially took professor McGuire's course for credit but in the end it ended up changing my entire outlook on anth/arch. Fascinating lectures and hilarious stories made me look forward to this class every week. Very reasonable amount of work and straight to the point textbooks. Highly recommend this course to anyone even slightly interested :)
Randy simply does not care. The lectures might be the most boring ones that I have ever sat in. He is not afraid to call you out for talking when he can't keep your attention. The grades are based on your TA and the TAs do not help at all. The discussion and lectures were a waste of time. The TAs grade very poorly and hate giving you partial credit
Worst professor I've ever had. He expects you to remember every little detail for the exams. Each exam is a test and a paper, and the papers have the most confusing and idiotic prompts I've ever seen. I asked him to clarify something for the final and his response was telling me that I didn't study enough and I have to work harder. Do not take him.
Professor McGuire is a very interesting professor to listen to during his lectures. Although sometimes he tends to drag on, listening closely is the best way to succeed in his class. He has a true passion for teaching this course as he really does go into all the details for his lectures. Exams are not impossible, but he will ask specific questions
Not too bad of a class, it was pretty interesting! Unfortunately, I had a tough TA so my grades weren't as good as I would have liked. Randy is such an adorable old man and I would definitely recommend this class. There are three group essays and three tests... thats it.
Good person, but he loses me with his system. Students are put in a permanent group to work on the many readings assigned during the semester, as well as group essays. Better hope everyone puts in the work. Also, GL navigating his old website for assignments. Tests cover a LOT of material. Don't take this class just to satisfy a gen ed requirement.
Professor McGuire is very knowledgeable and it is obvious how passionate he is about what he teaches. His lectures are engaging and respectful to the communities he teaches about. This course is very group work heavy, which has its pros and cons.
Amazing class and prof! I ended up doing research with him after this class, and he was great to work with. Very wise & willing to work with students to help them succeed. Be careful of his exams - they are hard! Study from the previous exams he makes available - heavily. Rewatching lectures is also super helpful. Take his class if you can!
Tests are very specific and difficult to study for. They are based mostly on specific parts of reading rather than lecture notes.
Love Randy. This was my second class with him. Tests are only specific if you don't listen during lectures or listen to what he's saying in the Panapto videos, usually the details he asks about on the exam are mentioned repeatedly so I found them pretty easy. Take home essays that counted as part of your test grade. goated
Tests are almost 50% based off of the readings so if you're going for an A you probably have to do most of the readings. Readings can sometimes (especially at the end of the year) be very long and the tests very greatly in difficulty which can be confusing when trying to study. Overall the class is pretty interesting if you like history or anth.
Buried Cities and Lost Tribes is the most interesting class I've taken for a gen ed. The class is very easy as long as you do all the readings and go to lecture.
I took his ANTH 256 class, and was expecting something similar for 370, but the structure was very different. We were graded on many long papers with unclear specific criteria, and no tests or participation credit. I found myself writing a 10 page research paper my whole spring break. Also did not attempt to get to know students in this small class
Randy is an amazing and caring professor (cares a lot about his course and students). He's funny and his lectures are really interesting. He includes his own experience with his excavations in lectures. The only downside to this course is the level of difficulty for tests. As long as you attend lectures and study the notes, A is very achievable.
He is a good teacher and passionate about his subject but for a gen-ed or intro class it is too much. The readings are too much to do and can get to you after a while. Lecture is not a must as he uploads it later. Honestly, if really interested in Anth only then take it cause its not an easy Gen-ed.
dont take for gen ed, unreasonable work load and the tests ask questions that are way too specific
These ratings are a sham. Be ready to put a lot of effort for this worthless Gen ed class. Professor seems to be leftist, brazenly pushing propaganda about some issues he has no idea about. Assignments are crap. If you planned on taking this class for Gen Eds, just don't. Take smth else
If you do not get an OKAY TA good luck.. essays are expected to be written like you are in 3rd grade. Don't forget to take notes with extreme details in lectures while also reading all three textbooks. Get your gen ed elsewhere, this class was the most demanding gen ed class ever.
randy is such a sweet man i was really looking forward to taking this class, but i had a HORRIBLE TA which unfortunately ruined this for me. you need to buy three textbooks for an A and read every single reading. i loved randy but do NOT take this class :(
Good professor but tests are very hard and its a class you need to devote a lot of time to considering its a gen ed course. papers are graded harshly but you can make them up for partial credit. No extra credit.
He's retiring this year so... regardless do NOT take this class. Way too much work for a gen-ed. There's definitely easier G credits.
Professor McGuire's class is engaging, but the tests are quite specific. To do well, stay on top of the readings and pay close attention in lectures. Unstuckstudy can be a helpful study tool alongside the textbook.
