Worst class I've ever taken. His way of teaching is to repeat himself over and over again. He gives weekly quizzes which are far too difficult and aren't curved, so pretty much everyone fails them (and they're 40% of your grade!). He gets frustrated if you don't understand the material. I'd suggest taking this class with a different professor.
if you have a short temper, this is not the professor for you.

Not a very great professor. He constantly repeats himself without ever really explaining the content. Constantly bombards with e-mails about homework and class notes updates. He seems like a nice enough guy, just not a great teacher.
I'm not the brightest student, but I think the class was easy.. I play farmville everyday in class & manage to do decent on quizzes. He puts ALL the notes on blackboard and tells you exactly what will be on the quiz, so just review the notes and get extra help if you need it. Overall he's not a good teacher.. & very, very boring. But easy.
it is good
Not a great professor, but he's an okay guy. Class is pretty boring and basically consists of him reading off notes. They're really dense and wordy, but they are clear enough if you get past that. He's always in contact with you via email about weekly quizzes, homework, and notes.
boring and always repeats himself but seems like a good guy. scales all the tests and quizzes too.
He says the word "um" about once every four words. A fellow classmate of mine counted upwards of 500 "ums" in one hour & a half class. He showed up 20 minutes late to the first class, and his ramblings on the topic were almost incomprehensible. I had to drop the class two days in which screwed up my entire schedule but it was still worth dropping
Easily the worst professor I've had at BSC so far. His style of teaching flat-out sucks; he just rambles on and repeats himself in 75 different ways. His weekly quizzes are easy because they're the same questions, just different objects. And he sends out about 4 emails a day. Save yourself the frustration, and DON'T take his classes.
DO NOT TAKE!! he spends days talking about only one example! He repeats himself to the point that you cannnot listen to a thing he says. He gets very flustered when a question is asked and does not fully answer it. He should not be teaching college. his class is scaled and he drops the lowest grades but it is impossable to stay awake in the class.
he has some of the worst anxiety i have ever witnessed u almost cant understand him because he sais um and and so many times. he acts very nervous and he defiantly does not have a very effective teaching style i will admit he is very smart knows his stuff but all he does is repeat himself
He emails you about 20 times a day with homework. Is always late (even on the day of the final). He tries to explain things but doesn't really, my entire class never had any idea what he was saying. He doesn't pass back homework and you never really know what to expect walking in..pick a different professor
By far the worst teacher I have ever had. Ever. He is extremely unorganized, doesnt know what hes talking about, or how to answer ANY question. He will email you 8 times a day with reading assignments, but will take three weeks+ to return a three page paper... I tallied 709 'ums' from 9:45-10:45. DO NOT take this class if you can avoid it.
He's a nice guy and is very fair with the homework and tests/quizzes. He is a bit awkward but honestly, I think it is because students can be so rude to him and he gets nervous/flustered. All in all, I thought he was definitely a decent teacher!
This was by far the worst class/professor/teacher I have ever had in my life He is unorganized has some of the worst anxiety ever its hard 2 understand him uses um & so alot repeats himself over & over again never answers questions is always late (even to the final) never passes work back emails A LOT. take a different philosophy professor
I know everyone complains about this professor, but I really didn't think he was that bad. Yes, he is kind of an awkward guy to be honest, but he is a very nice guy and a very fair teacher. Some students are just disrespectful towards him, which isn't right. You will get emails often, but he gives you lots of opportunity to bring up your grade.
He is an awkward guy. Class was so easy. If you don't understand something he will explain it till you do. The only bad thing is he makes things more complicated than they really are. Says um a lot and repeats everything over and over
He is literally the worst teacher ever. He is a nice guy but goodness he is so awkward! He is kinda gross and his class is pointless. scales everything.after a while stopped taking attendance. I did bad on tests and got a b in the class. late EVERY DAY ans it gets old after a while. would not recommend if you dont feel like wasting your time
He's a really nice guy, but he's awkward. Someone counted him saying "um" about 200 times in one class. He repeats himself A LOT. Me and another girl in this class learned more by teaching ourselves the material. He's really fair with grading, and there's a lot of homework, but he gives you time to do it. Take him if you don't mind studying a lot.
This is overall a very easy class. he scales everything, and yes frankly hes a bit of a mess, but he explains everything, and scales so its easy to get an A. Participate in class. You have to take this class regarless b/c its a core, and I'd rather take it with Randall, even though its a pain in the butt class, its an easy A.
He's a nice guy, just really awkward and boring. He goes over everything in class, and what's on the test is in the notes. It's hard to pay attention and the way he taks becomes annoying. Fairly easy, just pay attention and participate.
Rose is really friendly and easy going. Yeah, he says "uhm" a lot (the kids in my class have counted approx 150 a class) but he's very kind and wants to help you any way he can. It's impossible to fail his class. To fail, you'd have to not show up to one class. I know a lot of people have said nasty things about him, but I think he's great.
He is a really nice guy. He says um a lot but he likes to make sure that everyone knows what he is talking about. You spend like 2 days going over one thing you learn but he always tries to make sure you understand what is going on. Homework is easy and so are quizzes if you know what you're doing
Professor rose is super helpful! He knows that the course material is difficult and is lenient when it comes to grading. He is very friendly and always comes in to class early. He dresses very professionally and loves to help his students. He was seriously like my best friend. I would definitely recommend him as a great philosophy 111 professor! <3
Randall is a great guy. He is a little strange... He walks into class with heavy feet 14 minutes late (you can leave after 15!!)He cares a lot about his students and will fight to the death before he lets you walk out of his class confused. Although he says "um" a lot, he loves his students. Worth taking!
He says "um" literally over 200 times a class and he repeats everything. The material is easy and he emails everything he goes over in class. He is almost always at least 15 minutes late and is very typically a hot mess. He seems like a nice guy but I havent learned much from him, the only reason I havent dropped this class is because its manatory.
He is never on time, says uhm constantly, and is extremely awkward. He's a really nice guy, don't get me wrong, but if you want to pass Philosophy, find another class.
If you want to pass a class and do nothing, take him. He literally passes everyone. But don't expect your grades to come back in a timely manner. Our grades didn't get back to us until a week after the deadline. He's boring and his class is useless, but you can sit there and do nothing but still pass.
Very easy. He passes everyone. If you don't have any interest in Philosophy, but want an A, I suggest taking him.
He's a really easy teacher and he is never on time. We didn't use a textbook in the class.
Professor rose is a beautiful soul
Very easy class. Makes sure everyone understands concepts before moving on.
Homework for every class, but 99% of the assignments are online and really quick and easy. The class is pretty boring though. Doesn't go by too slowly, but he repeats himself a lot. He makes sure you understand the current topic before he moves to the next one. Quizzes are planned and homework and notes are emailed to you. Easy A
He is a really good teacher if you don't care about taking this class. He gives quizzes which are scaled and drops the 2 lowest quizzes . If you miss class you can take the quiz the next class. He assigns homework on blackboard. He is late to class most of the time Easy A A textbook will be posted DO NOT BUY he will tell you that you won't need it
Prof Rose is a nice guy, he just talks too much and he never let class out early. He rather rant on and on about what he has sad a million times than to let you go early. When there are days that other profs are giving off, he wouldn't (For example: Good Friday). However, he is easy so if you're not trying to struggle wPHILL then take him
Look, Randall Rose is not the best professor, phil 111 is a sucky class, but for most of us it is a core requirement. Randall Rose is the professor that will not let you fail. If you want a professor who is funny or lets you out early, go to someone else. If you want a professor who will try his hardest to make you succeed Randall is your guy.
Rose repeats himself a lot but some may say this is because he's trying to get the students to retain material. We had several short quizzes through blackboard based on material. Other than that, it was just 1 final exam. Lastly, participation was a must. You must participate at least once per class or else you get points taken away
Randall is honestly a fantastic professor. Does he repeat himself? Yes. Does he do it for your benefit? YES. Very straightforward, absolutely there for you as an instructor. Philosophy is a requirement for most of us and Randall gets that. Quizzes are manageable and homework is actually helpful for learning material. I recommend his class highly.
I lost my patience will this guy when he showed up an hour late to our final. He repeats himself so much that it confused me even more. The class is so boring that you will hate going to class. All homework is online.
He's a nice guy but I wouldn't take him again. Like everyone else is saying, he's VERY repetitive and it makes the material more confusing than it needs to be. Easy to pass just really hard to sit through every class.
He was by far the EASIEST professor that I have ever had!!!! Even though he has a speech problem, I would take him again. I missed classes & as long as I emailed him he excused them. If you send him questions to every reading & go to as many classes as possible & speak once you will get an A+. There is only 1 exam & 1 paper. He also scales.
Homework is really easy every night, however more than half the class is spent just going over it. The last 15-20 min is a lecture that is not clear/very boring. Rambles on about the notes. Very understanding person though.
Prof Rose is probably the kindest and most patient professor around, however, his class is very difficult to sit through, homework every night, easy and helpful but kind of a nuisance since you go over it again next class. Glad this requirement is done!!
Very repetitive, not really sure if material was actually explained.
He will go over something until everyone gets it and wont guce quizzes until he knows for a fact that everyone understands
Extremely repetitive and doesn't actually teach the material.
Although Randall isn't the best professor by any means, he does have an irreproachable intent, and he's genuinely concerned with student success. His explanations of course material aren't nuanced, nor will they further your interest in the topic, but they will equip you with the necessary skills you need to pass. And for some, that's what matters.
Randall IS NOT the best professor by any means, but the intent to help is there. The class is mostly going over Hw... (most of it online) and him talking for like the last 15 mins. VERY repetitive which can get annoying. Very socially awkward. Easy class though. But he makes things harder than they need to be.
He is a really nice guy. Extremely easy to pass this class. Spends too much time going over the homework, but will make sure everyone understands. Quizzes are very easy. Highly recommend his class.
He definitely cares about his students. Class started off fairly easy, as it went on material got harder and his teaching was so-so of the material. Difficult class and sometimes feels like he has difficulty teaching. He is a really nice guy and understanding. A lot of blackboard homework. I wouldnt take his class but wouldnt be upset if I had to
This class is cake. He's really nice and spends alot of time going over the same topics which can be tedious but it only makes the class easier. If you have to take Phil 111 take Randal Rose.
He is a very nice guy and really cares about his students. He tries to make the material as easy as possible for everyone to understand. For over half of every class he will go over the homework but it is only to make sure everyone understands it.
Pretty good, if you pay attention in class you should do fine.
He is a very thorough teacher and genuinely wants each student to understand the material. He is very caring and I will look for him in any other philosophy classes I take.
Professor Rose is a very nice guy, and overall his class is good. He is however very socially awkward, and this sometimes complicates how he explains something. He, for my class at least, was constantly late, sometimes more that 25 minutes late. He also posts the homework late. Overall this class was easy.
Hardly ever ended class on time and mansplained every single thing during lecture making the material significantly more confusing than it actually was. He's also a stickler for participation in class discussions and gets angry when people don't talk in class. The class is easy and an A is more than attainable but you WILL be bored out of your mind
Gives you handouts which has everything on the quizzes and finals for you to study. Lots of homework on blackboard but reviews them in class. Has only 1 final. You have to participate a couple of times to get those points. Really easy, kinda boring class. Just review handouts and homework. Takes off 2 lowest quiz grades.
Took this course to fulfill a core requirement, definitely my easiest class. Randall Rose is a quirky guy, but he knows so much about the subject. He was one of my only professors that took the time to learn everyone's name in the class. Homework never took me more than 15 minutes. Great at explaining things and very understanding about absences.
Professor Rose definitely knows what he's talking about and knows a lot about philosophy, he just gets very repetitive and can be a little awkward at times. He also starts a whole new topic with 2 minutes left of the class which can be a bit frustrating. The class was pretty easy though
I practiced writing with my non-dominant hand during this class, it was so boring... Prof. Rose rambles on and takes an hour to cover 20 minutes of material. Participation matters, but if you skip class don't worry--he puts everything you need to know in 15 handouts and posts them on Blackboard. Also, he allows unlimited attempts on your homework.
very peaceful voice
I don't recommend his class. He's not the best professor. He consistently uses the same example when he teaches, rather than using new ones. When anyone asks questions he only gives his opinion which would sometimes not match the answer. He never gave back homework corrections and some grades. He jumped around in the units in a very confusing way.
Randall was such a nice professor and I highly recommend him. He is funny without trying to be!
Very socially awkward, but will always explain things if you are not sure. My class was silent so he would get upset when no one spoke. Not someone I would go out of my way to take again, but would not mind if he was my only choice. He drops your lowest 2 quiz grades and has quizzes every 2 w. No papers, lots of easy and quick blackboard homework.
He is a little socially awkward and I honestly didn't think I would enjoy this class in the beginning but he is super nice and understanding. Lets you make up homework you missed, drops your 2 lowest quiz grades, and provides the notes he uses in class. For a person who isn't really interested in the material he makes things pretty easy.
bro was the goat. i had him a year ago idk why im writing this now. im drunk i miss you randall
Tends to repeat himself many times and go over the scheduled class time. The material is very easy to understand, however, he usually overexplains it and wastes class time covering material everyone already understands. Takes off the two lowest quiz grades at the end of semester, homework is graded on completion, and he's super accessible by email.
My favorite professor. Over-explains concepts, usually because someone in class asked for it. Randall respects ALL students immensely. Gives out his phone number, accepts late work, and gives full credit on hw as long as you do it. Doesn't care if you come late, but I recommend being on time so you don't miss things. Love him. TAKE HIS CLASS !!
Professor Rose was very nice and always understanding. You can tell he is the type of professor that just wants his students to succeed. He was always available via email and even gave his personal cell incase of an urgent issue or question. He gave a clear study guide and didn't count questions on the final if it was something he hadn't gone over.
If you need to take CRIT 111, I 1000/10 percent would take it with Randall Rose, he made the class so easy to understand, there is a lot of homework but it takes less than 5 min and its only graded on completion not correctness, drops the lowest two quizzes and is super nice and cares and wants you to succeed. Def take this class with him!
He is inconsistent with grading criteria he will give one person points for an answer and if someone else has the same answer he will mark it wrong as well as there are a lot of tests. he is VERY repetitive, and it gets more confusing the more he explains like it made sense the first time you said it. He is also very socially awkward.
He is an awful teacher. He is super repetitive. If you ask him questions on the topics he never seems to make them clarify. He showed up 20 minutes late to the final exam. He handed out course evaluations on the final before the final exam. He is very repetitive and hard to learn from. Do not take him if you can avoid him.
Homework is graded by completion and given out every class. Lectures are okay. He wants to make sure everyone passes and I think that's why he really wants to make sure everyone understands a concept before we move on. This can make the lectures kind of hard to sit through. Study for the quizzes; not a lot of questions so one wrong has an impact.
DO NOT TAKE. He blabs the whole class and talks either till the last minute or after class ends. So much homework it is not even funny. only good thing is the homework is graded by completion. quizzes are 10 questions so low grades. cant go on phone or laptop. hes way too strict about attendance. no midterm and final is online.
Okay so at first i did not like him because it was very strict as far as phone and computer usage is. he prefers you write notes. However, he will make sure to remind u of upcoming due dates and if you've missed too many days. His class is lots of notes if you're an avid note-taker, but he gives you all the notes in one place. intense stare.
Always late to class but expects you to be there. Assigns homework at last minute so you have no time to do it.
CRIT-111 -Arrives late to his own class he teaches -Gives quizzes mid class even after showing up late -Doesn't allow electronics to take notes unless you have a good excuse -Tons of homework with assignments that have like 2 questions each for 10 separate assignments due the next day rather than having them together in a single assignment
always late to class; said “hitler has good arguments”; said “kamala harris has no brain”; asks the same question over and over for 15 minutes “would anyone wanna go over homework”; makes you super uncomfortable; very rude; disrespectful of your time; keeps you late; mark you absent if you leave early but not if you're late;DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!
DO NOT TAKE!!!! If you value your sanity and peace of mind, please, for the love of God, do not take Randall Rose's class! He will show up late and TEXT yes TEXT people to make sure everyone stays, even though he stated that he is going to be 35 minutes late to a 50-minute class. I wish every day that I had signed up for a different professor.
class was easy but unc pulled up late to most classes and 30 minutes late to final. wasted everyones time all the time.
As I'm writing this we're 20 minutes into the final class and he still hasn't shown up. At least he'll count your attendance no matter how late you show up. Illogical fallacies are a good topic to learn in the long run but I don't think it's a class worth taking, go take a fun one for your credits.
said hitler had good arguments and asked if anyone wanted to go over the homework for 10 minutes with no response every class.
this class is so easy, it shouldnt be called critical thinking. it should be called common sense. hes a nice guy and actually understands the course very well. all notes on blackboard. very difficult to fail unless you dont show up to class
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!! This man consistently showed up late to class, and 30 minutes late to his own final. He also said Hitler had good arguments, as well as just being rude and never making any sense when explaining things. Also he's text us when he was late instead of canceling or emailing.
Overall, Professor Rose is easy-going, and you can get an easy A in his class with minimal effort. He is a pretty awkward guy, and the class can be boring, but it's the easiest class you will take. There is homework assigned every class, but it usually takes 20 minutes max and is graded by completion. He also drops your two lowest quiz grades.
Unprofessional and disrespectful of students' time. Was late to the final and spent 1.5 hrs (half of the exam time) printing them while we sat around doing nothing. Is late to class, disorganized, and unresponsive to emails. Repetitive and wordy teaching style, making classes hard to sit through. He also promised extra credit and never sent any out
