Knows how to make a survey course riddled with traps
Not a hard marker, likes independant thought more than memorization
test questions are unclear, but lectures are skippable and labs are slack
a good guy, interested in his students and an easy marker
The tie-dyed shirts warm your heart.

his office looks like your at a grateful dead concert
Very nice, very fair, interesting lectures
His tests are hard, but hey its college. he knows his stuff and is interesting.
Excellent instructor
hard tests but he is interesting and allows the students to do some interesting assignments.
He is a very nice guy, but his labs are so disorganized, and he is very unclear when explaining things to the class.
I found his lectures quite dry. Quizzes are easy though. Make sure you get him to play jeopardy with the class.
A very intriguing and interesting man. A bg heart. A passion for his work. A little over our heads at times, but means well. And I cant believe no one rated him as hot, I found him very appealing.
very easy going, treats people with respect, but isn't someone that will let himself be taken advantage of. Has all his course notes online, which makes it very easy to keep up and allows you to just sit and listen to his lectures.
very hard class, but he make it interesting; labs could be a bit dry, but he tried to make them fun; group project was required; quizzes very hard; final taken on computer; good basis if you want to continue in psyc

I have found Randall Tonks to be a very patient man a little too patient at times..meaning that he lets the class talk amongst themselves while lecturing which is distracting. He does not always account for students not being doctors themselves.
He's a great prof. Very interesting and you can tell he really loves his job. He made me want to major in Psychology and I never wanted to miss one of his lectures. Not to mention, he's hot.
Personable and knowlegable.
This guy rocks, cool as can be, think mellow hippy with a cranium full of knowledge. He says some funny sh** and looks like a young Donald Sutherland?
My god, he's hot. I enjoyed the class, but I honestly went just to stare at him. Too bad he has 3 kids...
Well, his lecture are DRY, to the point i just took it online...HOWEVER! He is an enthusiastic guy, soo passionate about his work, and always there if you need him. Despite the lectures, i'd be happy to take another class with randy.

His physical and emotional attractiveness was distracting. Little homework. Course content was hard to wrap my brain around at times. He is so sweet and gentle and forgiving. Lectures were dry and confusing, but I still enjoyed the course. It's not your typical remember everything history class
randy actually manages to make a somewhat boring class interesting. he's a great teacher and really knows his stuff. he's very passionate about his work and is an excellent teacher. he's always able and willing to help students. I would definitely recommend taking a class with randy.
Model teacher. Extremely knowledgeable and teaching methods are very effective. More importantly, he knows how people learn and rewards students for their achievements if not necessarily reflected in formal work. Fully recommend Randy for any course.
Enthusiastic and with a thorough knowledge of the material. Very neutral. Haven't met many who didn't like him... those that did, didn't like anything about school anyway.
The class material is sometimes boring, but Randy makes going to class fun! He tries to make the dry material as easy to relate to as possible. Plus, it really doesn't hurt that he's easy on the eyes! He has a laid back surfer thing goin' on, he's super chill, & he is leniant when it comes to tests and assignments. GET INTO RANDYS CLASS IF YOU CAN!
He is a very gorgeous prof! It can make it a little hard t concentrate at times in lectures. The course material was pretty boring (very philisophical, which I don't really enjoy), but Randy tries to clear up different conceptsin a fun manner. The text book was awful! I almost think you're better off just going to the lectures.
Randy is a laid back professor, and his interesting lectures make this boring subject somewhat interesting.
A dry and tough course, but Randy takes the pressure off. He's brilliant, kind, funny, and helpful. He really enjoys humour in his students. I developed a crush on him too. Great guy, but he needs to be more clear and organized in lecture and in his notes. It made tests hard to study for, and the exam was very stressful. I hated the book.
This is the dullest class, but you have to take it and Randy realizes that so he makes it fun. Randy is awesome, he clears up the topic as much as possible, even though it remains fuzzy even after the final. Take Randy just for the random tangents in class and the Jeopardy final exam review. He's great!

This class never failed to put me to sleep. I think it was more the content and the length of the lectures, because Randy is wicked cool, nice, knowledgeable, a little quirky and very good looking.
Randy is easy to understand, clear and always open for questions and comments. He didn't make us buy a text book as he does all online notes. Really good teacher and marking is easy as long as you know your stuff
This is one prof I'm really gonna miss! I took both 100 and 210 with him. He seems way more interested in 210 than in 100 because you can tell the passion he has for it. My favorite thing about Randy is that when you go to his class you feel such a relief from stress because hes so easy going! Randy is always there to talk to. Your the best Randy!
Randy is one of the best personalities in the academic world. The course felt more like a third or fourth year, but Randy is an easy marker and very laid back. I have nothing but nice things to say about him.
Lectures were interesting and Randy was very laid back. Easy marker on labs and curved test scores if the class did particularly crappy. I was actually kinda sad when this class was over. Awesome prof!
He is so interesting! A great psych prof to listen to, and great videos for class too!
He is a pretty good prof. he records his lectures and posts them and has online quizzes which helps. The TA was horrible at UVic which made the class less enjoyable as she marked everything.
He's great! One of my fave teachers. Really friendly and interesting. I highly recommend taking any of his courses.
Randy was a great guy, laid back and easy to talk to. He was very helpful when it was asked of him. His lectures were long and rambling, and I found it hard to pay attention. He tells you more than you need to know for his tests, which are straightforward and easy. The textbook is not required he only tests on lecture notes except for one tiny unit
Had Randy for 210 and 201 simultaneously He teaches Research Methods like a philosophy, which works for other courses but not this one. Lectures were long and rambling, but he was very helpful at all times. When it came to exam time I managed to get a good mark despite not really understanding the material. Love Randy, but take another prof for 201
Tonks is the man. His Zeus-like beard is majestic. He talks faster than anyone I've know however he posts all his notes online and even posts live audio of each class. His class is structured for your success. Easy if you study.
Randy is by far one of the greates psychology profs that ever lived. Highly recommended!
This course was really easy, and relatively interesting. He was clear, helpful.
Randy is a great guy, but a relatively disorganized lecturer. Others love him, but I left his class feeling like I had learned nothing. His lectures are boring, and he likes to illustrate points in abstract ways that lack clarity. If you dont learn well from his style of teaching, you're in trouble because he doesnt refer to the text much (in 215)
Upbeat and easy going, but rambling, unclear lectures delivered at double speed. Not well structured and no text to fall back on for guidance. Came away with some nuggets of information but no cohesive understanding. The course needs updating and focus. Likable instructor, easy marks, but not worth the frustration.
Great teacher - you know that he knows what he is talking about!
Absolutely LOVED Randy! He is extremely knowledgeable, he is unbelievably helpful and completely approachable. I would welcome taking a course from him at any time. It was easy to be open, honest and ask any questions in his class. Not a mean, rude or unkind bone in his body. He really loves what he does.
Randy is hands down the best professor I have ever had. Although it's not mandatory to attend class you won't want to miss it. That and he gives you marks for coming. He has amazing stories and makes each class interesting. He gets everyone involved. I have taken 3 classes with him and wish I could take more. Take his class; you won't regret it!
Randy is an amazing prof and guy - he is incredibly knowledgeable and kind, managing to make a class that could potentially be quite dull very interesting and engaging. I highly recommend him ! I'm sorry to see the back of this class and am eager to take more classes with Randy - the best!!!
A hidden gem.
Highly charismatic and engaging. Lectures are interesting.
Super nice but organization was very poor. Instructions unclear to the point of being unnecessarily confusing. Do not feel as though I was provided with the necessary information to do well on tests.
The way this man conducts a classroom is inspiring. Take his class(es)... your life will never be the same again. A gem of a human.
Randy doesn't have an unkind bone in his body. Extremely passionate about psychology, knows his stuff, and is one of the most approachable professors you'll have. He always tries to animate his lectures. Some of them can drag on given they were twice as long than the regular 50 min classes but he always kept us engaged with his ways. Amazing prof.
Randy is the most inspiring, intelligent, passionate, caring and considerate professor I have every met. Although attendance is not mandatory, I highly recommend it. He genuinely wants everyone to succeed and understand his teachings. Any of Randy's courses are AMAZING.
I found that unfortunately, Randy taught this class from far too much of a philosophical perspective, making his notes and concepts hard to understand and concretely describe in words. Great guy, but if you're not the philosophical type and don't easily pick up philosophical jargon, then you're in for a bit of a whirlwind. Also, textbook = no help!
For the online class, our lectures were audio podcasts he'd previously recorded as well as a set of written notes. Overall, Randy was a good instructor. He's an easy marker, and as long as you pay attention to what he says to study, you'll do fine on the exams. His only downfall is that he replies to emails very slowly.
Randy is wonderful. When you need assistance, he's more than happy to help you. He also welcomes questions in class, which is surprisingly refreshing at Camosun. I missed quite a few lectures and still came away with pretty good marks. The textbook is pretty useless and the assigned reading don't have a lot to do with lecture content: save your $$!
The multiple-guess exams were a lot tougher than I thought they would be. There was a lot of reading every week, and generally a lot of information to cover. Although there is a free online textbook available, I found the optional "real" textbook invaluable.
DO NOT GET TEXTBOOK. Lectures are interesting and I really enjoyed them. Take notes if you want to, not mandatory. Everything is online. 1 Presentation on a topic (5minutes) 2-3 Short papers. NO TESTS WHAT SO EVER!! Show up to class if you want to be engaged, if you miss a class you wont miss much.
Absolutely fantastic professor and such a fun class. I could probably speak for most of the class when I say that we were all really sad to see the last day of class come. One of the best classes I've ever taken.
Tonks was by far my fave prof my first year at uvic! very personable and engaging! everything was covered very thoroughly in class and on his lecture slides provided..... Even spends half a class reviewing what will be on each midterm the class before hand! highly recommend
Good prof, takes time with students to answer questions, very approachable and friendly. Tests can be hard but he reviews and prepares class before tests. Most q's based on lecture notes. His lecture notes are available online but it is still a good idea to attend class.
Randy is a great person and one of the few teachers I've had who are truly interested in the students' success and learning. The class however was structured in an unorganized manner and notes were pretty vague. Also, the class was taught from a very philosophical perspective which will make it hard and confusing for those who don't like philosophy
Randy is a kind professor who goes above and beyond to help you get the grade you want. He is also an advocate for saving his students money, providing a free of charge online textbook. However, as a psychology major who just doesn't connect well with philosophy, I wouldn't retake this course with him because his concepts were too abstract for me
Randy is the best. I look forward to taking as many classes with him as I can during my academic career. I had so much fun in his music psychology class and due to it's choose your own adventure nature I developed a deeper understanding of things I am passionate about and how to connect them to the practice I want to develope.
Amazing :) take him in a heart beat
This was the first online course I have taken and it was a great experience with Randy. There is a good amount of work involved with this course but if you don't get behind it is completely manageable. I would definitely take him again!
This is a professor who is truly passionate about what he is teaching. He gives extremely inspiring and informative lectures about interesting topics that can be daunting with the concepts they contain yet his pure enjoyment makes the knowledge seem achievable. He presents his requirements well and prepares his students the best he possibly can!
Randy is a nice guy. The timetable constantly gets pushed back as wells a tests and papers. He has a very philosophical approach to teaching which can be overwhelming as the lectures are full of confusing concepts. His test questions are hard to interpret what he is looking for. Im near to failing his class and have an 8.0 GPA
Great teacher, laid back, very engaging, gives good explanations. If you don't understand he is more than willing to help. Tests match good study material. Isn't too homework heavy. Everything online and easy accessable
The best way I found to do this class was to attend all lectures and listen to and transcribe the podcasts. This plus online research provided all the study material needed for the exams, which were challenging for the philosophical content and detail they demanded, but it was worth the effort. A rigorous and holistic perspective of psych history!
Randall is fine. He has notes online, but the main material from the course is what he says in class. This is a very hard way to learn because you have to listen to every single little detail he says. For the tests and quizzes he marked extremely hard, but for the essay and take-home final he marked easy, so it was strange.
Had Randy for this online course. Interesting lectures. Take the practice quizzes!! The only thing that wasn't as awesome is that his recorded lectures keep referencing other classes like "You'll remember from Psych 100A that" or "We won't go into too much detail because we went over this in Psych 100A". But I didn't take psych 100A... so...
Randal is a super animated professor and his use of personal stories of his experience really helps students learn. Hes a super cool guy who has led a really neat life and he is very approachable. Showing up to class matters but you dont actually have to pay attention during lectures as long as you review the notes for projects and papers.
Randy is FANTASTIC! He is very fair and tells you exactly what he wants on assignments and exams. This class is pretty dull with the material but Randy makes it a ton of fun. He does assignments for attendance marks so definitely go to class. He cares about his students and wants them to do well. This class was an experience to say the least.
Randy is so great! Hes a genuine human who has a passion for psychology and it really shows. Lectures can be a bit dry and confusing but overall easy to comprehend. Hes awesome
This class is definitely more difficult than youd expect but Randy is a great teacher with a genuine passion for psychology who really pushes his students to be independent thinkers. The language he uses is sometimes confusing, so if youre considering taking philosophy of science at some point, it would be helpful to take it before psych 210.
Randy is one of, if not the most friendly and enjoyable proffs to learn under at Camosun. Randy aims to connect with the minds of his students and does so with the style of a philosopher musician... probably because that's what he is lol. Great guy. If you want an easy A and an IRL breakfast club vibe, take his music psych course. its a blast.
I really enjoyed having Randy as a prof. He is genuinely passionate about psychology, and that really translates to his lectures.
Randy is one of my favourite profs at Camosun! He gives amazing lectures and it makes the class fly by. He's super funny, energetic and understanding. Definitely need to show up to lectures because the notes posted online don't cover all the material that you need to know for the tests.
Randy is seriously the best. He is one of the best profs I've had at Camosun, he is really passionate about teaching and wants his students to succeed. I took his psyc 228 class this semester and it was pretty easy, just have to participate in online discussions and write a few papers. Really great prof, you won't regret taking Randy's class.
Maybe this prof was good before COVID, but I cannot recommend him for online schooling. His online information is very poorly organized, the textbook is poor and outdated, and he does not respond to emails asking for help or clarification. Some of his course content is inaccessible and it is impossible to contact him to fix it.
I really enjoyed his class. The lectures were very detailed and straight forward. He provides quizzes that can be taken as many times as you want which are very helpful in studying for the exam as they mimic the questions.
He failed to convert his class to an online format. His site is composed of random sentences and links that don't teach us anything. The textbook isn't helpful. Our entire course mark was from five assignments + participation. His instructions on what to do were vague. There weren't clear deadlines. He doesn't answer emails. 100% do not recommend.
I'm just happy that this course is over. I learned a lot from this course but it was very heavy and though. Also, his grading criteria wasn't clear at all, but he is a very knowledgeable professor.
He gives over 5 hours of podcasts to listen to every week, They make no sense and if you don't have the correct software you can't even access them, He never replies to emails, I had to drop the course because I couldn't get the podcasts to work 90% of the time and he wouldn't just send them to me. He has his own website which is poorly designed.
An extremely vague professor when it comes to grading. Great speaker, but a bit slow when it comes to getting through content and we've had to really rush to fit five or six topics into the last two weeks. With his papers, he's extremely tough with grading and won't give you marks unless you specifically give what he said in class. YIKES.
It is clear that Randal absolutely loves what he does, he doesn't like traditional teaching methods and takes a very philosophical approach to the course. This class is very difficult as you have to listen to every single detail he says, however, he posts online podcasts to listen to (they work on safari and Firefox). Rarely responds to email q's!
Dr. Tonks is obviously knowledgeable and passionate about Psyc. However, he takes an extremely philosophical approach, is a very tough grader, and only grades you on about 4 things the entire semester, so there's not much room to falter. The content on his website and lecture "slides" are sparse and disorganized. Lecture attendance is a must.
Randall has a clear passion for psychology and is extremely knowledgeable in the subject. Every week he posts 3-4 hour podcasts which he suggests to listen to wherever and treat them like podcasts in a way. Text book is required but often not referred to. Power points were a mess and hard to follow, since they were written in bullet point form.
Randall Tonks means well but clearly wants to teach philosophy and not psychology. He grades you on extremely specific things, does not give written or clear verbal feedback even with office hour appointments, and will grade you on four things this semester. Longwinded lectures, hard to understand, and will take weeks to respond to an email. Yikes.
Randal has been the single most influential professor thus far during my undergrad. He is exceptionally fair marker for papers, and his tests aren't too bad. the only caveat is yes, this man should definitely be a Phil prof, and if you've never engaged with philosophy, like myself, might be best to brush up on the literature before taking his class
Randal was able to take a history course and teach it from such a critical and engaging point of view. This man really loves what he does and your grade is determined by how engaged you are. He appreciates a student's ability to put their personal thoughts and ideas into their writing. I would take every course he teaches if I could.
Randall took a very philosophical approach to this class which was not expected and made the first few weeks and the midterm quite difficult. If you have background knowledge in philosophy this class may be easier to manage. He wasn't always clear about his criteria so its best to ask for clarification before the quiz or exam.
I took this class at the beginning of my degree and am now graduating~ I refer back to what I learned from this course all the time. I recommend taking a lighter course load and putting in a lot of extra time researching the philosophical concepts he discusses~ it will be worth it later in your degree. All social sciences are grounded in philosophy
This is the second time I have taken a course by this professor and will take one with him again next semester. He makes learning enjoyable and puts everything in an easy to understand manner. He also responds very quickly to questions.
I loved my class with Randy! He is super easy to talk to, and you can tell he really cares about his students. Always gives great feedback. You'll do a ton of writing in his class, but it's set up so you feel confident if you do the work throughout the semester. Also, his exams are set up in a way that you can actually demonstrate what you know.
Dr. Tonks is clearly a very passionate and accommodating teacher who made a dry subject very interesting. The only things is, I felt this course incredibly overwhelming in terms of course content to memorize for the midterm. Also, he is a very hard marker on the tests, but a reasonable marker on the papers. This course felt like 2-3 courses in one.
I enjoyed his lectures and content, but his testing is very obscure. It was difficult to sift through the copious information presented to study and do well on exams. Overall, enjoy their teaching style, but a big hurdle to study and achieve well in this course.
Easy to match content to exams, minus some of the statistic questions. Same with assignments.
The most abstract class. The textbook isn't mandatory to read but you'll feel pretty lost without it. Definitely more like a philosophy class. The few people I did know of that we studied (Freud, Darwin, Erikson) were fascinating to deep dive into. Overall, great prof!
Wonderful prof! I thought this subject would be boring but Randy made it very interesting. He was clear about what was going to be on tests and midterms, and what he wanted for the papers. Pay attention in class and maybe read some of the textbook. He colour coordinates his converse with his shirt everyday... absolute legend.
His online class sucks. From the other reviews here it seems like he's okay in class. You will get anywhere from 5-7 hours of podcasts to listen to, that are clearly just recorded lectures that can feel really meandering. I have received the feedback of "Very good" on every assignment with no notes. Website is awful, textbook is meh, easy grader.
A bit slow to respond to emails and his exams don't feel like they reflect the lecture materials, but he's enthusiastic and highly knowledgeable
He is the best teacher I have ever had, his classes are awesome and very interactive. Lost of presentations but not formal. He is super friendly and he creates a very comfortable environment for everyone.
His content and notes are barely understandable, as well as the tests. The test material is very unclear and he expects us to read the book and his notes (book readings are long), but says he'll mostly ask about note material.
This class made me so miserable. Should have been a philosophy prof. His lectures are confusing and long. Was so behind in the course schedule and would reschedule quizzes or midterms and not post on d2l. assigns so much writing with vague instructions and then grades based on his own subjective opinion and gives minimal feedback.
Randall is amazing, great/funny lectures, engaging and ensures everyone is understanding concepts as best he can, gives good feedback on papers, veryyyyy knowledgeable man with much to offer any psych student!! Would recommend to anyone!!
It's a pretty easy class but there's tons of arbitrary readings that are really long. Most of the content is through these readings and podcasts that can be difficult to access. His own website is also extremely outdated and difficult to navigate. Instructions for assignments are either very loose, really difficult to find, or just non-existent.
Randal Tonks is a great professor to say the least. Generally i find history mundane, dull and long but he makes the lectures more theatrical and funny. He makes things easy to remember i find his website super helpful. Honestly i would take any course he teaches, i love his enthusiastic energy!!
Lecture slides are very outdated and aren't formatted well personally (maybe bc it was online?). Grades generously, but doesn't give much feedback other than “good job”….. Content was interesting, and you see lots of overlap in other courses. Overall, not a bad professor, but also not exactly a great online class. Take it in person if you can
Professor Tonks makes this abstract course engaging. While the workload is heavy, using unstuck AI and the free textbook helps manage the concepts. Attend lectures, do the readings, and you'll gain valuable insights applicable across social sciences.
Professor Tonks made the online format of the course very engaging. He readily responded to questions and clearly stated the criteria of assignments. Highly enjoyed taking this course.
Dr.Tonks has a lot of knowledge to offer so lectures are interesting, but he tends to ramble and go on and on so it can be very easy to lose focus. The website he uses for his lecture is also so outdated and has very minimal information. Luckily his lectures can be all found in audio format on D2L so they are helpful for studying.
Randal is a very knowledgeable and caring professor, I really enjoyed taking his class. He really wants you to understand the material rather than just memorize. He can ramble a bit and his lecture notes are incomplete so you have to take good notes. All of the tests are long written answers explaining your knowledge in depth.
