Randi is a great prof - really knows her stuff & teaches it well
incredibly unfair. definitely would recommend NOT to take her courses.
Tough but fair. I like her and plan to take many more courses from her in the future.
Not very approachable as a DUET prof
Dr. Warne is a great professor, but she is a tough marker and expects a lot from her students. I highly recommend her as a prof. if you are a serious student who doesn't mind working hard who wants to learn something.
Initially a turn-off (thinks she's awfully smart & hip), but warmed to her, so stick with it! Explanations are extremely clear. Not very detailed essay feed-back. But genuinely kind & interested in how students are doing. Very open door.
I'm confused as to why someone would say that randi is not hip. She's hipper than hip. eat my shorts.
Gah, Love her. She may mark alittle hard but she really hints for the tests and she loves buffy.
Not the teacher for you if don't like Buffy the vampire slayer or bad jokes. Class wasn't structured at all and was mostly watching movies and discussion in small groups. Also has her own small cult of devoted followers.
ridiculously hard marker in the sense that i think she purposely gives certain people bad grades. she seems to have some sort of group of students that could probably get away with murder, if you're not in the group, i'd adivse to steer clear.
Any fan of BtVS is a good prof
Very difficult marker and doesn't leave very many comments on what she does mark. Class itself is interesting, but it was a little difficult to pick out what was important because of all the videos/clips we watched in class. Doesn't follow her syllabus at all, either.
I like Randi.Any bad mark was deserved because I missed the point. Then I got better. The course is not hard if you are willing to change your thinking. That is why you are there in the first place. She clarifys everything that is imp. even the videos. If you fail you are not listening?!
She is not approachable at all and doesn't know how to use tact when dealing with certain situations. I would avoid her at all costs.
Her frame of mind and her outlook on things is completely irrelevent, and at times ignorant! She isn't a bad marker but I don't enjoy how she tries to forces some of her concepts on us.
Whoa!!!!!!!!11 Is all I have to say...what a dork. Fun class at times, but prepare to hate Disney and everything disney stands for. she overall a good prof, but can get hung up on very small irrelevant issues, which waists class time.
Loved her. She rules. Buffy for life haha
Randi Warne is amazing. Simply put, an amazing woman. As a professor, she is animated in the classroom, but is very fair. You can complain all you want about marks that YOU got on things, but point the finger at yourselves and not at Randi. I loved her class, and frankly it made me consider taking CULS on as a second minor.
I thought Randi was a great teacher- have a lot of respect for her. I didnt think id like the class until i took it- she made it a lot of fun and i am very glad i stuck with it. concepts at times were hard to grasp, but in the end you know you earned your mark, because you definatly have to work for it. (but hey, thats good)
I LOVED HER! Great class discussions which helped me to grasp material better :0) Great job Randi. Regarding those other postings, this prof is not irrelevant...what class where you in???
Great prof, she really knows her stuff...but the subject itself was kind of hard to make interesting...
Great teacher, definitely the class and teacher I've enjoyed most so far! If you want a good, enjoyable class with lively discussion, pick anything of hers. Not only is it fun, it's actually worth something. Definitely not a bird course.
Really good prof. Made class very interesting and enjoyable. Has good stories. Really knows her stuff! Fair marker. Gives really good exam prep. questions. I hope to take more classes that she teaches.
OVERRATED.

Dr. Warne is an amazing professor, who knows her material vividly, and has an uncanny ability to integrate personal experience into her rhetoric as example. Few professors can keep a class interested like Dr. Warne.
only interested in promoting her own opinion, terrible notes would not take a course with her again

I liked Randi as a prof, but the class wasn't as interesting as I thought it was going to be and the presence of her fanclub/cult following was very distracting and irritating.
She's the worst teacher I've ever had. She's always going off topic. We have 1hr15mins for lecture, but you only hear about her personal issues. Take this course only if you want to learn about the personal side of your prof. If you challenger her, you will be shut down and she'll change topic instead of clarifying the issue.
FOr a 1000 level course, she is too hard on students....feel like it's a 4000 level course....We really don't care much about theorists and their quotes...the class is an elective for goodness sake!!
Thought the class would be interesting and a great choice for an elective... Boy was I wrong, turned out to be my hardest class of the semester, full of pointlessness. Do not talk a class with her if you can help it. She would rather rant about herself than teach anything useful. Horrible!!
Dont take it with her; you will regret it. Shes not a good marker and the course itself is full of articls that will take alot of time to read and study. Pluse she makes you watch stupid videos that are asked about in the final exam.
the only thing I should say, if you see her even in the hall just change your direction and RUNNNNNNNN
I personally found she was far too much of a space cadet for my liking. I was so excited to take Evil with her but one I actually got to meet her and sit through a lecture I wanted out. She does not stay on topic and can never seem to explain a thought clearly and fluently. I would not recommend her!
Hilarious and very interesting. Kind of a hard marker on papers. When it comes to exams, she tells you exactly what to study! WONDERFUL. I was always learning something new in the class and being able to understand and absorb it. Most knowledge I gained in my first year of university was in her Culture class.
Evil was hilarious, Randi is so much fun to take a class with and to run into in the hallway or cafeteria. It was very easy to follow if you get her clever sense of humour and she is a very fair marker who will even change your mark if you meet with her to explain your thinking on any of your arguments. Loved her class. I took Advanced too!
Amazing class, Its an easy class if you keep up with the readings and pay attention to what she is talking about because she clearly tells you what she expects of us on the final exam. Yes she doe go off a bit some times; but I havent met a professor the has not done that.
Randi is amazing. She is clear with everything and tells you EXACTLY often word for word what she is expecting you to know for the final. There are no tricks or hidden agendas with her, she explains everything and expects you to come to her if you are having trouble.Do your work, DEFINITELY do the readings for class.
She is pretty funny, and knows her stuff! hard marker at the beginning, but makes it clear to students what she wants so you can improve your grade. dont need to take notes, just highlight the book that she quotes from every lecture.
Do the readings. Highlight the notes. Go to class and take notes in class. Ask Questions. She is a good prof. :) Has a passion for what she does and will help you out if you go to class.
First year students be warned!! Do NOT take this course lightly. Took CULS1101 as a simple 1000LV elective and found myself pouring countless hours into it like I would a 4000LV course. Very ambiguous marker, and not clear where your grade came from ie. no rubric. Randi is fairly clear about what to expect on tests. Take this class with caution!
If stuck in your ways, don't bother. Teaching method more abstract than other profs. Memorize concepts and big ideas over small details. Take notes and use them for papers... concepts will help you for sure grade-wise. Will tell you EXACTLY what will be on exams. Do readings! Ask for meetings to clarify. Not easy classes, but super interesting.
Really liked her as a prof and a teacher. She knows what she is talking about and is clear on what will be on her exams. Go to her class and show an interest, she will love you. She is a great person and cares about her students doing well. Always there to help you out when you need it! I enjoy taking classes with her! :)
It took me a few weeks to really "get" Randi's teaching style, but once I figured out how to keep track during her lectures, I found that I really enjoyed her laid-back, casual way of teaching big concepts. She makes them seem much less daunting and scary. Take notes and highlight what she quotes from the textbook and you'll be fine. :)
I had no idea what to expect, but I am really glad I had her. She uses personal examples to teach abstract perspectives, and she's not stuffy and boring while she does it. If you don't "get it", she will help. She was great! Don't rely on the book alone. Go to class, as she clearly lets you know what will be expected on examsessays.
Oh dear...
Randi has a super interesting teaching style that takes a while to get used to. She is very eccentric and talks about her life a lot but the class overall was super interesting. Shawn the TA ends up teaching a lot and is super straightforward on what to expect. It was a great class and I'm glad took one of her classes
Here's what you do: Do not miss class. Ask questions in class or through TA or office hours for clarification and for extra help on all assignments - even if you feel like you don't have to. Subject and materials are worth understanding for any academic background. Challenging, but very rewarding course, loved it.
Dr. Warne is fantastic. She is a fair marker, good to talk to, and an overall great person. Unfortunately, I did have trouble following in her classes due to her teaching methods, and found what I did understand to be dreadfully boring. To get a good mark in her class, you must attend every lecture and do the readings.
Extremely hard grader, and does not give specific instructions on what is required. For a first year student who has never dealt with some expectations she had I did terribly. I was not aware that some of what she graded me on was even a thing professors looked for. I had never heard of it, never been explained it, yet was graded for it.
Took this course expecting it to be an interesting elective. Prof's lectures are all over the place, disorganized and she does not give clear instructions. Especially when it comes to grading. If you are thinking about this course, find another professor.
If you don't show up, do the readings, and pay attention, you won't be passing. Pretty straight forward. But she's a great prof, she cares SO MUCH, and she's a fair marker (tough, but not unnecessarily so.) I had a major problem with a student in class and she did everything she could to accommodate.
Dr Warne often strays from the topics she is discussing. Her lectures can be extremely hard to follow. The course is very challenging and the material is somewhat hard to understand. She does not give clear instructions on assignments. I would not recommend taking this course to anyone
Would not recommend this class or professor for the life of me. Shes rude and doesnt allow room for negotiation. All material is through verbal lectures, she doesnt use any form of technology or Moodle. DONT DO IT.
One of the best profs I've ever had; she is engaging, possesses expert knowledge on the subject, and does an excellent job at cultivating a safe learning environment for her students. This class deals with a lot of broad, abstract sociological and philosophical concepts, but she makes herself available both in and out of class to discuss questions
Doesnt use moodle, so no notes unless you take them. Forgets what she taught in previous class. Rambles about herself and political views. Will shut down any conversation that she does not like (even if it pertains to subject). Whether you wrote your paper on what she wanted is a shot in the dark, as she doesnt give any instruction. Avoid her iyc
Dr. Warne is amazing, she's so personable and kind, her lectures are incredibly engaging and she picks really interesting material to read and discuss, and she has the best stories that are tangentially related to her class material.
One of the worst profs I had. Comes off as kind but was was actually rude and not understanding. Attended class and signed attendance but accused me of not going. Test would be graded in her personal opinion over an academic perspective. Course material was a joke, all movies and nothing to study with. In the end, she was cold towards students.
Seems so approachable and funny at first, but ends up displaying a superiority complex over her students. Weekly 3 question quizzes with trick questions, everything by HER definition and not actual fact. Sent out assignment details and instructions after the assignment had been long due. Argues against differing POVs and gets offended. Rude.
I would never take this class or any class with Randi. Her feedback is more of her just yelling and telling us how bad we did and how its not to her unreachable high standards. If you have your own opinion, you might as well keep it to yourself because she DOES NOT care about it. She also shuts people down during class time when we have question
Stay away from this prof. Randi makes no sense when she is describing concepts, gets off track and her PowerPoint slides are awful. she talks about concepts as if you already know what she's talking about and doesn't explain assignments and work in detail (e.g how long, apa). honestly shes awful and I rather jumped off a cliff then take her class.
I'm shocked at Dr. Warne's unprofessionalism. At first, Warne seems like a caring prof but that façade melted fast. The standards that she holds students to is far too high. I can't really say too much because I am speechless at how she conducts herselfblaming the class for not understanding a poorly constructed assignment. Be cautious.
great interactive lectures!
Randi Warne is amazing. She definitely has a unique teaching style, but that makes it fun. She adds a lot of information verbally and uses film, text, and some technology (PowerPoint) to deliver materials, but if you take notes while shes speaking youll be fine in her class. If youre confused just speak with her and she will turn on the light.
I took Evil thinking it would be a really interesting course but Dr. Warne completely ruined it for me. She was rude and judgemental, blamed students for not following her non-existent assignment instructions, and got frustrated when students asked for help. I'm shocked at how she conducted herself in the classroom. So disappointing.
Thought the class could be one of those interesting electives you take that help you feel like you actually enjoyed your degree but it was the complete opposite. I did not enjoy this class because of the content, taught in a very boring way. Watched movies that were equally boring. Instructions were never clear. Feedback was always poor. Stay away!
I went into this semester thinking Evils would be an interesting class probably would have been if I had another professor. Most of the lectures focused on everything but the course outline. For papers clear rubrics weren't given and she often got upset since we didn't follow "said" rubric. Not a fair grader. Don't think of asking her for help.
I will not be taking any more of her courses, nor would I recommend her to others. She gets off track, trick questions on quizzes with few questions, gives no feedback whatsoever about assignments that had very few and vague instructions to begin with. Tough grader, blames the students for not understanding, not helpful when it comes to questions.
Instructions for assignments are unclear and all over the place. When I took the class Randi stood at the front of the room and read from the textbook, no powerpoints, and never used moodle, don't know if that has changed now. Likes to talk about herself a lot when it has nothing to do with the course content. Attendance and textbook are mandatory
Absolutely the WORST instructor I've ever had in my post secondary experience. Her instruction is unclear, she gets defensive and passive aggressive when you bring up concerns or ask for clarification, likes to blame the students for poor grades and take blows at their intelligence rather than accept accountability for incompetence. Huge EGO.
Dr. Warne is a nice professor who is willing to offer help and answer questions where it is needed. Her lectures are quite slow, and often repeated. Assignment criteria is not clear, and she is quite a tough grader considering this is a first year intro course. The class seems interesting, but I reccommend taking it with another professor.
I thought cultural studies would be an exciting and easy elective, however, I do not recommend this class. Dr. Warne is tough to follow, barely makes sense, and goes off-topic. We had no syllabus or written directions for assignments. Her quizzes are only 3 questions, so getting one wrong really impacts your mark. Do not take this course.
DON'T!! She spends the whole class talking about herself. Randi repeats and skips over information. Has no room for other people's opinions or views. AND doesn't explain what she wants for assignments and gets mad when you can't read her mind.
One of the issues with her course is that she meanders from one subject to another and you are best to be in complete agreement with her. Quizzes are multiple choice so memorize the text. Slides are not shared and difficult to note but she refers to them for the exam. Assignment instructions are vague at best and she's irritated by questions.
Randi is a great professor! She may get a little off topic sometimes and go off on tangents but she is very understanding, and flexible with assignment dates WITH VALID REASONS. She's a great prof to chat with, and is always willing to help. Marks fairly and will even regrade your work and give you a higher grade than before. She won't lower it :)
Professor Warne is a fascinating PERSON, but challenging as an instructor. The assignments were unclear and when students asked questions, we were often told to "refer to the syllabus" but the syllabus did not have clear instructions either.
Dr. Warne is an amazing professor. She might seem tough at first glance, but she has a very unique style. She's participative and open to suggestions; she loves when you have doubt and ask her questions -- she makes clear that if you have any doubt, you have to let her know. Her email responses are fast! I highly recommend her and her courses!
If you disagree with Randi Warne then be prepared for a low grade. Warne promotes Marxism in her courses. Warne claims that Matilda Jocelyn Gage invented the cotton gin. This is not supported by any credible evidence.
Yall are aware she says slurs and targets her POC students, right? Like she has been reported multiple times and just assumes her Black students did it.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!! Such a hard grader for an INTRO CLASS. i did all my work as it should be and received such a bad final grade. a C grade for an INTRO class is insane. she picks fights with students and is vague in assignments and will make it your fault for misunderstanding. seriously terrible and needs to retire!!
Great course, I've had many classes taught by her and I've enjoyed them all. Accessible outside of class, she does lose work so KEEP EXTRA COPIES/TIME STAMPS/ SCREENSHOTS and you'll be fine.
Was excited to take what I thought would be an interesting course, dread the class. Don't bother having an opinion/arguing (even if you are right), you will be shut down quickly/told you are wrong. Instructions are unclear. Followed the syllabus/grading instructions and lost A LOT of points anyway. Not helpful at all when asked questions
If you take a Dr. Warne class make sure you ask a lot of questions via email. She doesn't give clear expectations or a syllabus and expects you to do exactly what she wants. Keep an eye on your imputed grades. She doesn't notice when she misses a grade. She does not care about her students succeeding. If you have to take a class with her good luck
Disrespectful and denigrating towards students. Assignment requirments (format word page count references etc) not clearly outlined in syllabus. Poorly organized rambling lectures online. No PowerPoint nothing really just her on camera talking. Course content on course Moodle bare minimum. Just pure garbage really. Avoid at all costs!
Dr. Warne is an interesting person, I followed her assignment instructions and got a falling grade on the midterm worth a little under half of the grade for the class, when I asked to meet her to discuss the midterm, we scheduled a time to meet but she did not show up
