His only real job is coordinating bio labs. He is not prepared to teach a class as large as BIO 140. His lecture notes are crap and mostly consist of pictures of microscopes or something equally stupid. His lectures are a farce. Just read the book before the test and you should be just fine.
Easy but ridiculously bad teaching.
Some parts of his lectures are really interesting relating to real life but sometimes its quite boring but biology can be boring either way I guess.
Very smart, and knows a lot about biology, but sometimes he rambles in lectures and can be hard to understand. Just read the book before exams.
His lectures are very boring. He is a powerpoint teacher.read the book and use the internet. don't count on his curves. it is a stupid class but take is seriously and A is defintely possible. come to class even if you plan to sleep because he gives you 5 points each time he randomly takes role.
this class is kinda boring, but brewton cracks me up!! he doesn't try to be funny, it just happens!! :) not too bad to look at either!! :)
funny guy and easy test.
His lectures are extremely boring, but if you read the chapter before each test, you will do fine. You don't have to go to class because most of the test is from the book, but he does randomly take attendance and gives a grade for it. He usually tells you when there will be a quiz. Not a bad class, but I've heard of easier bio 101 classes here.
LOVE him! He's a very laid-back, easy going teacher. He's a great teacher, although he tends to go off on tangents sometimes & completely avoids what he's actually supposed to be teaching. His stories can be funny though, so it's not so bad. Read the chapters before the tests, and you'll do fine in his class!
really easy going and if you need help just email him
I don't know what every one else is talking about. I love him and think he's a wonderful teacher!! I've had him for 101 and 102, and he's blown me away with his knowledge for Biology. He's an awesome professor! Read the chapters before the test, and A is definitely possible.
he is really helpful and nice. test are mainly about the book.
The class is not difficult, but the lectures are not necessary. However, he does take attendance every once in a while so you need to go. Most of the stuff on the tests is from the book, not the lecture.
If you are looking for an easy A or B, DO NOT take this class. I once studied for a test for eight hours, reviewing the material that he personally told me would be on the test AND I FAILED. I found him to be incredibly unhelpful and mean. Find another teacher and you'll be much happier. I wish I had...
Anyone who likes this guy as a teacher must absolutely love biology. If biology consumes your life then yea, he's great but if you're just trying to pass a lab science so you can move on with your life, GET OUT NOW!
In high school I was amazing in biology and now the only thing that is keeping me alive is lab work! I hate going to this class because he rambles about nothing that we are actually supposed to be learning about. He never uses the book but that's the only way you can pass a test..and the tests...AH! get out of this class now..no joke.
The class has nothing to do with the tests, I've heard that by studying the book you can get an A on the tests but by just going to lecture I am getting a C (and I usually test really well)
the lectures are boring, but he randomly takes attendance and thats a great way to boost your grade. Lab work is important because test are hard. he is a nice guy and will listen to you and help you out if you need it, but the class is just hard. ive failed almost every test but have a B because of lab.
After an entire semester, I still don't know what this man was talking about. He rambles about things that don't matter. You have no idea what to include in your notes or what to study for. Therefore, you probably won't do that well on the tests, but he curves and drops a lab grade. With a little studying and solid lab attendance, expect a B.
class is boring but a great way to get work done for other subjects... he gives out random attendance quizzes that add 5 points to any of your exam scores... labs are easy but attendance is pretty important... tests are ok but you have to read the book to know whats going on...
Lectures are pretty boring but sometimes he does give random attendances which really help out your grade in the end. This guy can really talk and talks the whole hour non-stop about random things sometimes but they do relate to Biology somewhat. His test are pretty hard but if you really put your all into it and study a few hours you can do well
He seems to know quite a bit about his topic, but his lectures can get a little boring. He might be more engaging in a smaller or more advanced class. It helps more to read your book than to pay attention in class when it comes to his tests, though.
His lectures usually have nothing to do with the material. He likes to talk about random things. Just read the chapters in the book and you'll do fine. Tests can be hard but he lets everyone ask questions at the end so that can be really helpful. Your lab grade will help alot. Overall he's a cool guy. Take him if you can! Expect an A or B
I took Bio 101 with Dr. Brewton last semester and made it out with a B+. I chose to take Bio 102 with him this semester because he is a pretty good teacher overall. His lectures are pretty useless-just go for the random attendance points. If you go to lab, read the book, and study for tests, you will make it out with at least a B.
His lectures a pointless and boring, and he goes off on tangents that are so random. Read the book and look over the slides he posts and you will be fine! He curves a lot too!
His lectures are extreamly boring and pointless. I would recomend not going. The test are impossible. Read the book and you may do better on the exams. He gives a giant curve on the final so if you try a B is possible.
The only way to do poorly in one of Brewton's classes is to not apply yourself. If you go to class, read the assigned chapters and material, and try in Lab, you will do very well. 1/3 of the Class got a C or worse, but when only 1/4 of the class shows up daily, that's to be expected. That said, his lectures were a little usless and prone to wander.
You really do not have to attend his lectures as he tends to ramble on about them. However it is important to read the textbook to succeed in the class. I went to his lectures but did not read the book and wound up with a C. If you do both you should get an A+!
I don't know what everyone is talking about. I loved Dr. Brewton!! His lectures aren't always constructive because he strays a little bit, but read the textbook and making an A is eeeaasssyyyy.
His lectures are pointless he just rambles on and on about things that have nothing to do with the book. The tests are hard and have very complicated questions. The only way to pass the test is to know the book by heart and sometimes that doesnt help.
Of all the bio 101 teachers to take hes the easiest. You HAVE to read the book and basically know it backwards and forwards to make a good grade on the exams. The first exam I went to lecture every time and got a 94..for the second exam I didnt go to class once and got a 90...so I would recommend not going unless you want the attendance points
He gets way off topic and it makes it so much more confusing! I can't stand going to this class because of the way he just rambles on. The only reason I'm not failing is because of lab. I have done every single study guide but haven't made higher than a 60 on an exam.
Nice guy and probably one of the easier 101 profs. Attendance isn`t mandatory, but it still isn`t a bad idea(least for the first exam). As long as you know the book and read the online material you`ll do more than good. Oh, and don`t miss your lab! Getting up for a 9:00 isn`t fun, but they are easy and make up a decent part of your grade.
Fun and informative professor, though his study guides for exams and vague compared the the exams. The grade in the class depends on how you do on the exams which are very, very detailed and very, very difficult. I liked Brewton, but if grades are a priority, try to find someone else.
Really boring and uninteresting class. Basically just have to memorize the textbook for tests. Lectures are useless, as he just rambles and uses wayyy too detailed examples that won't help you learn. It's good to go though, since he gives some attendance points near the end of theyear. I've heard of an easier prof, but there are def harder ones
He rambles on about random things in class that has absolutely nothing to do with the subject. He gives study guides, but I think he words his questions funny...which make them hard to understand. I would study for hours and felt like I knew the material well, and would do bad on the tests.
Terrible. I hate this class. Tests are ridiculous. The average score for the first test was a 72 for 275 students. For this class you have to do readings. The lectures are him rambling about something barely, if even, mentioned in the reading. The study guides are completely useless and the tests are more of applying things we learned. Good luck.
There is not a lot to say about this prof. He rambles and talks on and on in lecture about poitless stuff that you do not need to know. His test are all application and very hard in my opinion. The lab however was great. early but fun and it pads your grade a lot. If grades are important to you than i would advise you not to take his class.
Honestly, I don't know what to say about his lectures. He rambles about stuff thats kinda random, like jello. I did ok on tests because I read the material on my own. He's cool I guess. Very metrosexual!
Lectures are useless, you live and die by the textbook
TAKE ANY TEACHER BUT HIM! His lectures are completely pointless. More than half of the time he babbles about pointless topics that have absolutely nothing to do with your exams. However, if you do get stuck with him memorize the chapters and make the best grades possible in lab.
This class is impossible. Nothing from class lectures or labs can be found on the exams, yet you are still required to attend everything. Bases participation score off of clicker usage in class. The tests are multiple choice, but extremely hard and are application questions from the textbook. If you can not teach yourself I do not recommend.
He sucks as a teacher. He rambles on and on all class about the most random**** and then when it comes time for the test you have no idea what is going on. If it was not my amazing lab teacher I would have completely failed this course. He could careless if you failed. Do not take him.
Pray for the curve! This class is completely pointless. I honestly did not retain one bit of information. His lectures are pointless, but you absolutely have to go to make some points for participation since EVERYONE fails the exams.
This was the worst class I've ever had. He is a horrible teacher. The tests are applying the science which he tells you he can't teach you. Even seniors in this class were lucky to get a C. He rambles all class and will not help you outside of class. Unless you're a biologist, his class is pointless to take bc you won't get an A or B.
Horrible teacher and horrible class. The highest average of all the lab groups for our exam was a 74, thats WITH a curve. He doesn't care if you pass or not or if you need help. He's very strange and rambles about random stuff all class. Do NOT take him if you want a good grade.
His tests are IMPOSSIBLE and EVEN WITH a curve I failed. His lectures are completely pointless and he does not teach anything that will be on the test. He rambles on in lecture and the only reason to go is to collect Clicker points. The margin class test score was 70 WITH a curve. I DO NOT recommend this teacher. I dont know how I even passed!
The most useless professor ever. We spent one class learning about paper for an hour, and nothing about paper was even on the test. He goes on tangents about useless info and then expects you to know the material. Oh and his test are the most impossible thing ever, no matter how much you study. FIRE HIM
MOST USELESS PROFESSOR EVER. SOMEONE PLEASE FIRE HIM
He goes on tangents daily, and they are never related to the topic we're supposed to learn for the exams. The exams are really hard and pretty impossible to get an A. The SI sessions are the only way I passed.
His tests are impossible bc you can study for hrs but he words them so difficult that it wont matter, you will still do bad. he had to completely drop the 2nd exam bc the avg grade was failing. Lab and clicker points is a boost if you get an A on both. He usually doesn't teach but gives random examples that don't help at all. I don't recommend him.
It was hard, and he is not the best professor, but these people are complaining because they did not put in the extra effort. I got an A in lab, came to almost every class and got clicker points, and I read the chapter readings. I barely made an A, but I fared a whole better than others. Are you willing to put in extra effort? If not, avoid him.
worst teacher i ever had. he made it seem like it was our fault if we were failing or doing poorly but really it was because of his aweful tests
Probably the best bio teacher to choose compared to what I've heard about the rest. Pretty fun in class though can ramble about a topic. The simple fact is this: READ THE BOOK! If you read and study the book as you go over the study exam, you'll do fine on his tests.
TERRIBLE teacher. He rambles in class, and when he does teach, he isn't very clear about things. His tests are all over the place, and even though he tells you what will be on there, once you get the test it's nothing like what he told you it would be. The only hope is to read the book and keep up as you go along, otherwise you will fail for sure.
you don't have to take notes or even pay attention in class. but you do have to show up if you want clicker points, which happen to count for a big chunk of your overall grade...to well on the tests simply do the assigned readings. And if you're not into rants about science, bring a big or something to keep you occupied cus the dude's passionate.
I didnt think he was very good. Hhe rambles all during class abaout nothing that has to do with what you will be tested on. His study guides usually dont cover anything on the tests either. Best you can do is read and pray. I would suggest someone else if biology isnt your thing.
must attend class every session in order to get clicker points. not going a lot will really hurt your grade. he mostly rambles about stuff not on tests and is a very boring professor. i attained absolutely no info from this class and i suggest another professor as he is boring and doesnt even discuss what you get tested on.
Most people disliked him it seems but if you're into learning he's great, tends to hit topics for a very long time but interesting and exciting professor to me.
His class is fine. Not overly horrible or overly great. Exams are difficult. He does get caught up on certain things and talks about them for too long. Even so, he is very passionate about biology. Labs are easy and boost up your grade...you pretty much show up.
I only missed one day of class and I stil barely made an C. He's never on topic and I even went to see him for extra help - unaffective. As far as your grade goes you better be comfortably in a grade range or you can expect the lower grade. Wouldn't take him again.
Dr. Brewton was great. It was a large class, so there wasn't a lot of one-on-one, but the lab helped in that aspect. Tests were pretty easy if you do the reading and come to class. He does like to ramble, but it's usually interesting. Very nice and intelligent guy.
That man is a genius. He is a really neat guy, but if bio isn't easy for you, take someone else. Make sure you go to class because clicker points help! Randy B has difficult tests, so if you know biology doesn't come naturally to you or you don't care for biology, do not take his class.
This guy will really hold your attention, and keeps the lecture pretty interesting. The class isn't too difficult. Come to class to get clicker points. To study, skim the chapters and do the study guide.
If you go to class your get an A. The tests arent bad just read the book. If you don't go to class you won't get a good grade, if you do your be fine
Possibly the worst and preoccupied professor I have ever experienced. He is inattentive to his students needs, and does not bother to help in study sessions. The tests are not relevant to what you learn in class. If you enjoy a prof that goes off topic one too many times and has no understanding of how to communicate with his students, have fun.
easy class. read the book and do the online stuff and you wil make an A. Dr Brewton has interesting lectures. i loathe science and made an A.
He has really interesting lectures but they are not relevant to what is on the test but I suggest you go to class because it helps. For test look at the questions online and review readings. His notes arent that helpful since the test don't cover the stuff in class
This guy is a horrible teacher. I understand it's a lecture, but he literally makes class as boring as possible. To make matters worse, his lectures are irrelevant to the tests. My best advice is to read the textbook and use online resources such as Studyblue. Avoid Brewton at all costs.
Dr. B is a really nice professor. He seems to really love teaching biology, too. I don't find his class boring at first, but I do fall asleep EVERY SINGLE DAY. I sat in the front, fell asleep. Sat in the back, fell asleep. He has a tendency to ramble a lot. Reading before you go to class might help. But his tests aren't impossible.
Brewton is a great teacher. I went to his study sessions and made A's on his tests. If you read the book you will do great. He goes off on tangents, so I feel lecture is half-way pointless. He does clicker questions, though, so go to class. I just zone out. He is hilarious, too.
i loved him! he was really funny, and though he didn't teach what was on the test to a T, he made the tests a lot easier on us by letting us ask questions at the end. i really liked him and i would recommend him!
Dr.B is a great lecturer. he does a great job with trying to make it interesting, but it can be pretty irrelevant most of the time. Just read the textbook, and make sure you do the mastering biology assignments and you should be fine
Go to his office hours any time you have a question and he will raise your grade. Rambles in lecture. Go, get your clicker points, leave, and read the chapter.
His lecture was the most boring thing on the planet. He can be funny at times, but we only talked about useful information maybe 25% of the time. He can be funny, but he goes off topic A LOT. Tests are hard cause you just have to teach yourself what's on it. Do the study guides, but the review sessions don't help. Go to lecture for clicker points.
Lectures are boring. He rambles a lot about pointless stuff. Go to class to get the clicker points. As long as you read all the assigned readings for the test you will do fine. Lecture does not help much but the book does. Just read. Lab is very easy.
He's very enthusiastic about Biology, but when it comes to needing help...he doesn't seem to care. I had a mix up with my assignment and he just wouldn't have it and said that I should be happy with the grade I got. Not very professional. Need to read the textbook, only reason to go to class is clicker points.
Mr. Brewton is so nice and funny! He does go off topic a lot though. I recommend going for clicker points, but I would spend class time reading the textbook instead of listening. We only got homework twice. Most lab assignments are very easy. I usually did the worksheet, turned it in, and left without staying for the whole lab. I totally recommend!
Dr. Brewton is a good professor, I stopped taking notes in class because the exams come straight out of the book, so I just read that instead. He does go off topic/drags on about the same thing for to long, but he is funny. Tries to get students involved as he gets more comfortable with the class. He'll talk to you if you sit up front. Take him.
Go to class, clicker points add up.. he may not be too easy.. but the class is not that hard. Also, he curves the heck out of the class.. our class was curved 4 points. I am taking him again for 102. Exams are straight from book. Read each chapter 4 or 5 times and you will get an A on exams.
He really nice and has funny stories, thats keeps the class interesting since its so boring. but you need to go because clicker points are important. but take textbook notes, they help a lot
Posts slides online. He tends to ramble. Most of the things we go over in class is not relevant to tests. He gives study guides which help a little but not very much. Attendance is not mandatory but he does give clicker questions. Lab helps your grade a lot.
Take this professor! easiest biology class I have ever taken. He heavily curves the final grade and I would have gotten an A even without the curve. pretty much half of your grade is clickers lab and the online homework so it is pretty much impossible not to get an A
Brewton is NOT a good choice for this class. He is really nice and funny, but he also goes on a lot of tangents and never gets back on topic. Lectures don't have a lot to do with the tests. Reading the book thoroughly is the only way to pass.
Really nice and helpful, but rambles a lot and doesn't really lecture on test material. Honestly, I come to lecture for the clicker points and then do other hw. As long as you do the reading, online hw, and labs you'll be fine. Easiest bio i have taken.
Going to class isn't going to help you. All the test material is in the book. Keep up with the book and take notes and make outlines for the book and study that. Do not study your notes from lecture because you will waste your time. Recommend not taking this teacher.
Brewton can be entertaining in class, but his lectures are HUGE 200+ students. He has 3 exams and then a final exam. THEY ARE DIFFICULT. You pretty much have to teach yourself, and it's hard to know what will be on the test. He gives exam outlines, but only studying that you will not pass. He's a nice guy, but his class can be hard to get an A in.
He sounds like a mupet Bio teacher, which can be entertaining. He's a cool guy, but his lectures are useless. You WILL have to teach yourself during his classes and don't expect the tests to go well. Not to bad, wouldn't necessarily recommend him.
He goes off on tangents about his fish and his own injuries. His lectures have nothing to do with the material found on the tests. You will need to read the chapters and do the quizes at the end of the chapters inorder to pass. You must attend class to get clicker points, because any point you can get, the better your chance of passing is.
Long lectures, barely any of lecture material on exams, but you must attend lectures to get clicker points. Woulnt recommend him. Lots of reading and boring lectures that are honestly pointless, because the tests just come from the book.
The absolute worst teacher I have ever had. Will not give any clarity on what is expected in class. Tests are entirely from the book lecture does not help what so ever. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!!!!
Dr. Brewton often goes on tangents during lectures, which feel much longer than an hour. Tests are hard, but you have to study the book. He does curve test grades (sometimes) and offers opportunities for points. MUST GO TO CLASS.
Although Brewton is generally a friendly guy, his lectures will not help you pass tests. Be sure to actually read. Attend all classes because of lecture points (they actually count). Don't skip labs.
Mr. Brewton is a great man, but not so much a great professor. GO to the lecture though, because each class has multiple clicker points. His tests are totally from the book, so there's no point to pay attention in the lecture. His tests are hard, the material, not so much. He loves trick questions and mastering biology questions on the exam!
Reading the book is key to passing the class! Most of the lecture content isn't on test, but he does tend to thow a few questions in the test about random facts he goes over in the lecture. Going over the mastering biology questions is a good way to study. He is a friendly teacher, but he isn't very clear of what he expects from students in class.
Dr. Brewton isn't so bad. It's general biology so the material is boring but he goes out of his way to bring in interesting concepts. He always uses real life examples and you learn a lot of fun facts from his class. He actually went over relevant information in his slides and lecture, but lectures were long.
Brewton is an interesting teacher who does his best to thoroughly explain all of the material. Biology is not an easy subject to begin, but if you are able to pay attention and take notes the whole time, you will do great! He posts lecture power points so i spent the class taking notes on everything he said along with each slide.
Dr. B is an incredible guy but his lectures were unrelated to the tests and he went off on many tangents. It was my hardest class all semester just because I had to study like crazy for each test... I ended up teaching myself a large portion of the material. Don't worry though, he curves the final grade IMMENSELY.
Tests come straight from text and powerpoints. Class is mandatory with clicker questions being part of the grade. He doesn't give a- which is great and an a is usually 88+.
Dr. Brewton is a great teacher and he really knows a lot about the subject he is teaching. If you do all of the online hw, go to class, and make a effort you can pass. At first it seems like he is cranky but he is just professionalnerdy. Ignore his study guides, the pwrpoints and online hw answers are what is actually on his tests. Thumbs up!
this class is not bad AT ALL. Brewton's lectures are completely pointless, but GO to class because there will be clicker points every day (clicker points are just for attendance, not accuracy) As long as you do the Mastering Biology questions (which are all on quizlet's) & read the book you will make an A. don't do study guides they are pointless
The lectures may help clarify the material, but most of it really is pointless. Clicker Q's are mostly participation; go to lecture and do them! Use class time to do homework if you can multitask. Not very clear about what will be on the exam, even in his study guides, but the material itself is fairly digestible. Recommend? If no better option.
I'm not going to lie, sometimes it seems like his lectures don't connect to the reading, but he makes his lectures very interesting. If you're the type of person who shows up for every class then you will do fine because he gives a TON of clicker points. He's really funny and loves when you show interest in the material! I'd take him again.
Dr. B is one of the better professors I've had, and I would take this class again. Lectures are long and sometimes go a little off topic but there are tons of clicker questions to boost your grade. Study guides for tests are useless just do all the readings and study the PowerPoints and you will be fine.
Decent professor though he tends to get a little off track
Dr. B is a very intelligent professor. I liked his lectures because when he taught, he did read off a powerpoint; he visually illustrating things and spoke as if he was having a conversation with you. HIS EXAMS ARE MULTIPLE CHOICE. I am taking his class again next semester.
Dr. Brewton is a great professor. He makes his lectures as if he's having a conversation with you instead of lecturing. Tests are multiple choice, but they are difficult. Would recommend.
Dr. Brewton is very helpful. He responds to emails promptly and informatively. He is very knowledgeable in this area. The exams are kind of confusing as you need to study the notes, the powerpoints, and the textbooks.
Brewton is a great person and is passionate about what he teaches. Go to class and pay attention in lectures. Lectures can be interesting, but he does go off topic often. Tests are not too hard if you study. Overall, I enjoyed the class and would take it again.
The tests are tough. There is no way of knowing what will be on the test. The study guide does not relate to the test material. The lectures are long and boring. Overall, extremely difficult.
Dr. Brewton is one of the best teachers I have ever had. His lectures are always interesting and engaging. His tests are hard, but if you read the book and his power point slides , you will do well. Labs are easy, but weekly homework is required to be done. His A usually starts from 88-90.
Brewton is an overall good person. In lectures he tends to get off topic a lot and a lot of the time they are boring an uninteresting. The study guides he gives do not help at all for what is going to be on the exams, and the exams itself are difficult. Make sure to read the textbook, powerpoint slides, and review the online homework for them.
Why does this man not have higher reviews? He reads off his powerpoint and as long as you listen to what he says, you should do fine. His lectures are a bit lengthy but his anecdotes are actually quite interesting. I barely studied and, though his tests are a bit wordy, I did well on the exams. He knows an awful lot about biology and that is great!
He's such a kind and genuinely interesting man that he makes lectures bearable. Watch out for the study guides though - most of the material will not be pertinent to the actual exam STUDY THE BOOK. Study the online launchpads and the study guide if you really want, but take it from me you will need extra sources.
Brewton is a funny guy and is really knowledgeable. His study guides are almost pointless though; definitely do not rely on them for the tests. Also, be really nice to him and talk to him a lot. HE RAISED MY FINAL GRADE BECAUSE I ALWAYS TALKED TO HIM. He is really nice which makes it easy. His humor and enthusaism make the lecture go by quickly.
Great professor! makes lectures interesting. Online homework is easy, Tests aren't bad just read the book and the online homework (the study guide isn't that helpful) I really enjoyed his class and would take him again!!!
He's very good professor. Always willing to help his students. He knows a lot about biology and his lectures are lengthy, but he's very passionate so it makes you wanna listen. The homework is fairly easy and he does give a little extra credit
Coolest science teacher I've ever had. You can tell he is incredibly passionate about Biology even though most of the students in there are pretty apathetic. I normally hate science but he made me only dislike it. Awesome professor.
I love him as a person. As a professor, not so much. He tries to make his lectures fun (effort noted), but its boring material and i cannot concentrate on the way he taught. may have been a personal problem? maybe hes just boring?
Never went to class and failed all of the exams and still got a B. Do your homework and quizlet the answers. Download the clicker app and do the questions from your bed (he uses the same code everyday). The lectures I did go to were extremely boring and he rambled aimlessly. A lot of people don't go and there was only 1 extra credit opportunity.
Mr. Brewton is a great person, very caring, and understanding. As a professor his lectures are extremely boring and his powerpoints can be confusing if you are a person that likes to take notes. HIS TEST STUDY GUIDES DO NOT HELP. I normally get As and Bs on any test but his tests were abnormally hard and there was no way to prepare for them.
I loved Dr. Brewton! He is kind and genuinely cares about his students. Although his lectures are lengthy, he tries to make them interesting. Tests are hard, but use the book not the guide. Be nice to him and make sure he knows who you are. Work with him and he will likely curve your grade. Be nice to him and go to class so he knows who you are!
Dr. Brewton is a really nice guy. He does give extra credit opportunities and gives extra clicker points. You can miss class a good bit without a huge effect on the grade. The exams were pretty tough, but I ended up making a fine grade because of the lab grade and homework grade. Not a bad teacher, but be prepared to study. Ca
Was one of my teachers the first semester. He holds his own review sessions vs. sticking you with a TA which really helps in my opinion. The tests are hard but fair do your reading study guides and go to review sessions and you'll be fine. Also he holds tutoring sessions sometimes. Go to class for clicker points and do saplings . Funny dude
Pretty good class. Never paid attention in any of the lectures and just studied the vocabulary and sapling quizzes and did fine. Gives extra credit and depending on your TA lab grades can help a lot. Also no final just regular test during exam week which is really nice!
He was alright. Don't have to go to the lectures in order to get clicker points (can do it online).
Dr. Brewton is one of my favorite people. You can tell he cares about what he teaches and really enjoys his job. He makes class interesting even though most people don't want to be there. He is also super accessible and gives plenty of extra credit. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Super easy tests, straight off his homework.
very nice guy he loves science he does get off topic in lecture and does a lot of clicker questions. exams are easy if you read the book and study the sapling questions. I LOVE him and his teaching style ive taken him for both bio 101 and 102. great professor take him!!!!!
Awfully boring class. No structure. I never went and did average on all of the tests. There is no possible way to stay awake because he is a rambler. I would cry if I had to take Bio again. Do the clickers online. Sapling answers are in the book(only time I used it) and google. Don't bother reading the study guides. Tests are mainly Sapling.
He's a fine teacher. Lecture is crazy boring, but if you do the saplings and clickers and study the saplings for tests you can get an A. Gives extra credit every semester which is nice. Overall not a great class or teacher.
I love him !! He is my favorite professor .. I would definitely recommend him to anyone !! He has some great playlists that he plays at the beginning of every class .. You will laugh in class unless you have no sense of humor . Take him , he rocks!
Dude's hilarious, and knows A LOT about biology. Lectures can be hard to get into but he awards tons of points for staying active on Sapling and clickers. Tests can be kind of difficult so take good notes. Lecture does not match up to the labs well.
Dr. B is an awesome teacher and extremely caring. He loves his job and is an incredible person outside of class. Willing to help if you are behind. Lecture is not as helpful as sapling when studying for test. Clickers are used in EVERY lecture so attendance is basically mandatory. Overall, definitely take Dr. B if you have the chance.
Really nice professor. He does clicker points so be sure to go to class however he tends to ramble rather than lecture. If you read the book and take notes from it you'll do well on tests. Is very willing to help his students out- gave me advice about taking chemistry and let me reschedule an exam the day of due to an emergency. Great class!!
Dr. Brewton is a very nice guy. His lectures are somewhat boring, but as long as you are aware of what's going on you're fine. His tests are really easy. All I did was read each section and take notes, look over lecture notes, sapling questions, & memorized the definitions. My lowest test grade was an 88. Do go to review sessions & the study guide
Brewton is an angel! He is so passionate in his lectures, and very acccessible outside of class. As the department head, he is a busy man BUT he will speak to you in passing on the hallway even if you think he doesn't recognize you. Take him seriously. He's an excellent learning resource! Just put the time into the readings and study.
I took this class in the fall of 2015 and i would not take it again. We had 4 exams i failed every exam but somehow passed with a B that is not ok, i did not learn anything and spent my entire semester confused. Overall, he is a great person
Dr. B has the tendency to ramble in lecture, but hes a super nice guy. I definitely recommend the review sessions he offers before exams, he will answer your specific questions and it really helps.
Dr. B is an amazing professor. He does tend to ramble in lecture, but what professor doesn't? His tests are mostly straightforward from the textbook readings and Sapling homework. There are so many points available other than just tests, so if you bomb one or two, you're still going to do fine. Great guy, loved the class.
great guy! goes on tangents, definitely take his class!
You have to go to class to get participation points, but other than that it doesn't matter if you go. He rambles often and can stay too long on one topic, but he definitely cares about his students and is always available to help. His tests are pretty hard but if you learn how to study for them you'll be okay. Awesome guy.
Brewton is a solid choice for a semi-easy relaxed class.
Although you don't REALLY have to show up, the clicker questions presented in class are a part of your grade. Skip wisely. Brewton is an easy professor and he's pretty laid back. He recognizes the people who do show up often. His class is a breeze as long as you pay attention, do the homework, and study.
He's a nice guy with funny lectures. Clicker points and exams are the only grade really. You don't have to show up since the clicker points can come from online and he posts his powerpoint. His class is a chill atmosphere and he's always willing to help his students in any way he can. love him!!
Hes not very approachable at all. If you are to email him with a question or concern he sends pretty rude answers. Most emails i have sent to him have been returned with very rude responses in which one he made me feel very stupid. He rambles in his lectures and his study guides have nothing to do with exams. Wouldnt recommend his class to anyone
Brewton is respectable and tries to make class enjoyable for everyone. His clicker points are easy to do from home so you don't actually have to show up. Powerpoints are posted online. Easy lectures to follow. Has study sessions before exams to answer questions!! Do your work and study a little and you'll pass!
Dr. B is one of the best professors I've taken at UTK. He is very approachable and does his best to get to know his students. His tests are kinda challenging, but once you figure out how to study for them, they're not bad at all. If you read the textbook and do the Sapling, you will be fine. He gives tons of EC too!
Brewton is an awesome teacher! There are four tests and the tests are very easy. There is very little online homework. The lab is tedious, but what lab isn't? He tells you to buy the textbook and read it, but I did not and still made an A. Attendance is important because he gives clicker questions! But you get credit even if you get them wrong!
He is one of those professors that you feel bad about missing his class because he is so nice and loves his job. You dont necessarily have to go to class because clicker questions can be answered from bed, but class helps. He does not try to trick you on tests and always sends reminders about assignments. Definitely take his class.
Dr. Brewton is one of the kindest professors I have ever encountered. He is literally one of the funniest teachers I've ever met. He is very easy to talk to, just go to his office hours. Definitely review sapling quizzes before tests!
His passion for biology makes you want to learn. He loves to share stories that connect back what the material is focusing on. His tests are not very difficult as long as you show up to class and study the material. He usually holds study sessions before every exam and genuinely wants his students to do well. Wonderful professor, so funny
Dr. Brewton is ok. He knows what he's talking about, but he really rambles a lot and sometimes the lectures are hard to follow. Exam questions are sometimes taken from Sapling quizzes. Read the textbook to know the basics, because his lectures don't go over the basics. His class wasn't fantastic, but it wasn't awful either.
Dr. Brewton is a solid bio professor. He rambles a lot, and the exams are sometimes difficult, but nothing too bad. for 101, he was SO much easier than the other professors (as told by friends in other classes).
Dr. Brewton is a really funny, interesting guy, but his lectures often take weird turns and don't necessarily relate to the material. I would have just skipped the lectures and taught material to myself from the textbook, except he had in-class clicker questions that count for 10% of grade. He does post study questions for tests which is helpful.
he is a really good teacher. you do not need to go to class just remember to have your clicker ready cause he does them all the time (usually very easy). his tests are all MC. I really enjoyed his class because he is funny. the class can get boring a lot but what class doesn't I am taking his 102 class next sem. tests area all powerpoint based.
Dr. Brewton is a total sweetheart. Don't take anyone else for 101 or 102! I had him for both and he is very consistent. Study for tests, but they are all multiple choice. Clicker Qs are used in every class and the occasional homework questions. Lab homework does not take very long. He is really funny and approachable! Answers emails quickly.
Brewton is not a great lecturer. He doesn't explain things well and he doesn't take the time to pause a lecture to check in with the class. He gets pretty angry when the class does not do well on an assignment, which takes up what is suppose to be a real bio lecture. Not great. Don't take him.
Dr. Brewton is an amazing professor and was one of my favorites. Attendance is strongly encouraged and there are in-class clicker questions that count for a good amount of your grade. Otherwise, the exams and assignments are easy and relevant to the readings and course materials. He's hilarious and a total sweetheart that wants you to succeed!
Dr. Brewton is an amazing professor! He really cares about his students. I had him for BIOL101 and BIOL102. I really recommend him if you want a professor who is not overly challenging and fun to listen to during lectures. He does clicker questions that count as "attendance" so if you complete them during class, you get points for that day!
I took Brewton for biol 101 and 102 and loved it!
Dr. Brewton was so sweet and I overall thought his class was easy. The lab assignments were awful, and your lab TA is dependent on your grade for those. But other than lab, all the assignments are super easy. In the 90's on all the tests without studying. Take Dr. B!
Dr. B is the best! He is so sweet and really cares about his students. Make sure you go to class because clicker questions count for 15% of your total grade. The tests are multiple-choice and as long as you study you will do fine. He really wants you to do well. The lab part is fine, a lot of work and depends if you have a nice TA doing the grades.
Dr. B is incredible! He is hilarious and tries to keep the class as interesting as possible. His tests are not that difficult and the clicker questions are mostly taken for completion points rather than accuracy. The labs are little long and tad confusing sometimes, but overall not bad at all.
One of the best professors I have had. His attitude is positive and his assignments are easy. The quizzes were super easy and so were the exams.
As long as you show up to lectures (where he throws out participation-based questions), you should be absolutely prepared to ace all the tests he gives. He also assigns a lot of reading with questions, but the questions are gone over in class and not entirely necessary unless you need the extra help. Easy A as long as you study a bit and show up.
Course is pretty easy. Attendance is required, which is unfortunate because the lectures are boring and just go over the book. Labs attached to the class are not interesting and feel like busy work. Overall, seems like the easiest choice of the BIO professors, but his lectures are boring and I grew to dislike the class as the semester went on.
His tests were on things he would mention once in class but during class he would constantly go on tangents so I would never know what would be something I needed to know versus things he was just ranting about.
Dr. Brewton is definitely losing his touch. I get a very ADD vibe, he bounces from one thing to the other at times and its hard to keep up, then hell get obsessed about one specific thing and say it over and over. Its like come on man, move on. Only a little of what he goes over in class is on the exams and is worded in a confusing manner.
Lectures are abysmal; all over the place, goes on tangents unrelated to topic, yet requires attendance. If you just read the book you will be fine, but his lectures are essentially useless. Weighted grades, yet does not know how to set up Canvas to weight grades, so your actual grade is probably a few points off, which is annoying.
I truly actually enjoyed bio 102. I thought that lab was actually... dare I say fun. I barely went to class honestly because he uses the same clicker code every class. As long as you actually read the textbook, you should be fine. Brewton is very sweet and funny. He was always responsive to my emails and is happy to help when needed.
Randy Brewton is such a nice guy. He is positive and will happily give very deserving student an A+. Exam content comes straight from book and lecture slides. His class gets boring but its so easy to do well.
Dr. Brewton's class is super easy. All tests are multiple choice and most of the questions are from the readings, clicker questions, or Achieve quizzes. Attendance is not mandatory (except for lab). Labs aren't hard and most is group work. I barely went to lecture and just read the textbook and made A's on all the tests. Highly recommend.
I personally really enjoyed professor Brewton. All you need to do to pass this class is go to lab and read your textbook. The book is actually interesting and as long as you are up to date on the readings you should do fine on the tests. He also uses the same clicker code everyday so you can skip lecture if need be.
Dr. B is a nice guy and has an amazing pre-class playlist. He is very entertaining in lectures but tends to go down rabbit trails. There are a lot of readings you're supposed to do before each class, but as long as you pay attention and keep up with the Achieve quizzes you'll be fine. Exams are multiple-choice and in-person, and not too difficult.
Dr. Brewton is a caring professor with a funny personality. My only complaint is that his exams are not reflective of lectures or lab assignments (lectures are interesting, but I did not find them helpful for exams). Read the book, study the PowerPoint slides, and go over the achieve quizzes and you should be fine. Easy A if you put in the effort.
Dr. Brewton is a very nice professor who cares. There is readings for each week, but make sure you actually read them because your exams are pretty much over the readings and achieve quizzes. The only problem with Dr. Brewton is that he will go on and on about one slide and tell the same thing a million different ways. Great class with fun music!
Dr. Brewton's class was incredibly easy. I went to lectures and didn't pay that much attention and still did well on tests. Make sure to answer clicker questions whether in lecture or not because they make up a big part of your grade. Also don't trust your Canvas grade because he grades different than what Canvas shows so it will likely be curved
Compared to my BIO101 teacher he was great!! Very nice and interesting to talk to. His test's are just multiple choice but they are not open note or curved. As long as you do the reading and pay attention in the lectures you should do good on the tests. Actually pay attention to what he says in class and don't just read the slides!!
Dr. Brewton makes his lectures interesting and fun. Most of what is discussed during class is on the exams. The lab reports, textbook quizzes, plus studying can become a heavy load sometimes. This class definitely needs to be prioritized if you are considering taking it.
In Bio101, he reads off the PowerPoint, but on exams, non of the information is on it. You have to read the textbook in order to understand the material. The exams are also pretty confusing if you dont prepare enough. Sometimes, the exams are materials that we didnt even cover in class.
Brewton is very passionate about biology. His lectures are typically not helpful and the info is not on the test. I never went to lecture and just did the clickers at home. As long as you read the book and take the quizzes you should be fine. However his tests usually contain info we never went over in lab or lecture. Overall, pretty easy.
Brewton gives off huge uncle/dad vibes. He would often go off on tangents about either random stuff or personal stories, but they all had so much charm. The actual material of the class is often not even gone over in the slides (it is in the reading), but honestly for the amount of work I put in, I deserved a worse grade. He's great though, TAKE!
A nice guy, and not too much work, but he doesn't really teach much. Lots of tangents and stories instead of explaining the material. Most of the exam questions are on content from the textbook. I had to study a lot.
You need to go to class to do well. He has clicker questions that are sometimes worth more points based on who is in class. However he is very open to questions about exams and material in the textbook. Make sure you read the book to do well.
Its lowkey a hard class. well the exams were hard for me because I didn't pay attention in class. Its hard to pay attention, he barley talks about the actual material he gets on 30 minute long tangents which is ok but all that listening for just a little bit of the material, not worth it. Cool guy tho love him.
He's fine. I found the lectures boring
He is a great professor who loves what he does and knows a lot about biology. His clicker code is the same, so if you need to miss a few classes, you can still get the points but what he says in person is very informative to know. Always study and memorize the homework questions because they are on tests.
Super nice guy, attendance is based on clicker questions (same code every class), lectures are boring and kinda pointless since exams are just based on textbook readings and achieve quizzes. If you read the textbook you'll be perfectly fine, but Professor Brewton is very nice, funny, and interactive.
super sweet
very nice teacher! Assignments mainly consist of achieve quizzes, online labs, and unit exams. Tests are heavily reliant on the textbook and some things from the lecture slides, but it really is an easy class overall especially if you are a non-STEM major. Participation is by clicker questions (same code) and it's not accuracy based at all!
Easy online class, lots of lectures.
Such a good online lab class. Easy to do the labs and so much better than going in person!! Professor Brewton is so kind and knowledgeable. I never had any issues with the class. Would highly recommend!
He was very unhelpful through emails and classes were very hard to be engaged in. I feel like if I learned anything I taught it to myself.
Pretty chill guy, it was an easy online class to get my lab credit. Super good lecturer.
I took this class Tues/thurs, and it was always the longest hour and a half of my life. Biology isn't my thing, but it was way worse than it needed to be. he was usually nice, but one time, he went off on this poor girl in front of everyone for being late. I emailed him once, and he was not friendly at all in his response. Not great, not horrible.
Fairly easy online class. The professor is kind and knowledgeable. Attend lectures, use the free textbook, and try Unstuckstudy for study prep - you'll do well!
Sometimes the lab website would not work, and it took him a while to correct my grade. Other than that, he is fine. Very average professor.
A very good class, but I wish it emphasized hands-on learning even more. Labs are useful and pretty easy tho. Professor Brewton is a very nice person. Would recommend.
Brewton is nice and funny but I didn't enjoy the class. I got a 50 on a lab because it did not go through on his side for some reason but I had proof I submitted it on my side and still was only given half credit. It dropped my grade to a B and I wasn't able to get it back up to an A unfortunately. The class isn't hard but it can be time consuming.
Have you ever wanted to take a class where you spend more time trying to figure out what you need to study for the test over actually studying material for the tests? If that sounds like fun, take from professor Brewton! Literally take from anyone else, hated every second of this class. The labs are super easy though, only positive of this class.
He is incredibly inconsiderate of his students. Rambles, makes strange political remarks and walks around and makes fun of specific people in class. No clear grading criteria/can't view your grades. Genuinely an easy course content and test wise but his personality and teaching style was unbearable.
Honestly a rude guy. Did the point solutions way too fast, so if you missed one “there will be other opportunities”. Material and class was overall easy though, so I can look past his attitude. Online option was a great choice.
This guy will not answer any of your questions well, and instead talk about something completely unrelated. Work isn't very well outlined and is on so many different platforms its hard to keep up. Cheating in this class definitely better than in person bio, but if you want to actually learn something useful, this is not the class.
He does not really care what is going on with your life outside of class. A couple times he has taken off points for people on clicker questions because they had a fire drill and couldn't bring their laptops with them. His lectures are basically useless and when preparing for the tests, use the textbook and don't even bother with anything else.
Dr. Brewton was very knowledgeable about Biology. He can be condescending to some students, while other students not so much. If you study hard before exams, you will do fine.
