Never have I met a teacher so passionate about his work. Thank you :)
Great prof., keen and inspiration.
Tough midterm
Very subjective. If he likes you, he will help U.
One of the Greatest Teachers You Can Get
He is a very nice prof.
Organized, but tends over explain. HINT: if you got it, tune out for a min.
passionate, hard tests, willing to help u, good heart, funny
Lots of work, tough exams, but always available for help and great attitude
says he's sympathetic toward students, but really isn't
No Comments
Challenging class but extremely helpful prof. Passionate about chem.-rubs off on students!Always avail.4help.Class not a walk in park.Do your homework!Lots of it for a reason!!
Challenging course and hard midterm, but clear explanation
Very well organized--doesn't like idiocy.
Do it in his wayz. other wayz? WRONG!
SUCKZ!
If you are not one of his favorite students, you won't get good mark on assignment, quiz nor lab report. One warning to future chemistry students: If you don't mind getting C- or below, take Randy!
Good Chem teacher... lots of homework. if you don't understand his lecture, read the text. Still don't understand? go to his office and ask for help. He's very helpful and will explain till u understand. Definitely one of my fav. prof. at Douglas.
Randy is not a good teacher, I don't recommend him. When you ask him something, he's really rude when answering questions. You feel so stupid that you never want to ask q's again. He's not clear when he explains it to you. He expects you to know everythin
Do it in his way or else WRONG! (Don't get me wrong but he is very helpful to students but he seems to be very stright to his fellow staff.)
Get another prof. He demands far too much in labs and homework assignments. He marks way too hard for what is essentially an entry level course. Truly he is 'a my way or the highway' instructor. Maybe he cares;but I never got that impression.
Very helpful. Always available when you need help. Very well-organized. Knows his stuff. Chem is hard so dont be intimidated to ask for help, he is a great prof.
Not Recommended. Knows his stuff but a bad instructor. Unfair exams and a hard marker. Must meet his high expectations to get a descent mark.
Great teacher, very helpful. Jokes in class and makes chemistry fun. Has high expectations but they are reasonable. Finish the homework assignments and you're guaranteed a good mark.
Currently enrolled in his class as of Feb 7, 2004, 1:5am..haha..he's really really clear on what he expects from you, course objectives are there to guide you towards midterms/final. Exams are lengthy, so dont think too much when going through the Ques.
Randy,by far, excels in his subject area than most of the other chem teachers I've had till date. People often say, he's a tough marker, but that's cos he expects us to work hard and pay some respect to the hard efforts he alz puts in. Way to Go Randy.
I dropped his course last semester because he would never help any weak students (to those that he thought not going to pass). I enroll in another instructor's chem108 this time and he's way better than Randy. Randy is there to discourage weak students.
"IT'S TIME FOR SOME REAL LIVE CHEMISTRY!!!" That is the best kind of energy to have from a teacher for 8am. Most energetic teacher I've ever had. Informative and clear...messes with your mind with odd questions at 8am though, just to keep you aw
He makes the exam so hard. Really high expectation. NOT RECOMMENDED.
To pass or get a mark above C+ you have to put in atleast 2 hours/hour of class time. His tests are fairly difficult but his energy in class makes it all worth while. The final/organic chem is extreme, make sure you lighten your load before the coarse.
wants every student to succeed. goes out of his way to help everyone out. so energetic, positive and encouraging. a true pleasure to learn from and a wonderful person as an individual. i have total respect for this man.
Too energetic
Randy has great energy and a lot of experience. He puts a lot of time into his lectures and REALLY wants his students to not only succeed, but enjoy his course. You HAVE to know the material as the tests are long, but he's always willing to help. A+ thank
he teaches really well...but he's a hard marker!
Before taking a class with Randy my interest in chemistry was mainly due to necessity, but after taking a course with him and experiencing his enthusiasm in the course I have developed a genuine interest in the topic. I wish all profs were more like him.
he sucks
he's a very good teacher, you will understant the concepts and will really know what you're doing, but he's a very hard marker... don't expect A's.
high participation marks = subjective marking. He actually has an attendance sign up sheet to ensure that no one ever misses his boring class. Attendance marks make me sick!
absolutely the best prof I've ever had, wish he could teach all the courses because he wants to make it easy and understandable for all his students. HE ACTUALLY CARES.
It's his first time teaching this class so he has a ways to go until he becomes good at it. You don't get the feeling that hes there to help and he doesn't prepare you for any of the tests. When the class makes it known that they need help on knowing what to expect on the exam he still doesn't help
this teacher makes you feel so stupid if you ask a question in class. he knows how to lower your self confidence level...he does not know how to teach. he is boring and has dumb jokes. he should be more careful with ppl's feelings when making them feel like they should have never asked a question!!!
By far, the best teacher I have had in the 2 years I've been at Douglas. Very enthusiastic and excited about teaching, funny, and does all he can to help his students. "It's time for some REAL LIVE CHEMISTRY!"
i guess he is the best historian in the chem department
hess a good teacher but he doesnt take the time to elaborate on some of the questions and concerns by the students. hes very enthusiastic and hes tests arent too bad if you studied for it (same with quizzes) but i find that he is a hard marker.
The best, most enthusiastic teacher I've ever had. Yes, the material is hard, no he is not an easy marker, but he truly wants his students to do well and gives plenty of opportunity to come to him for help (he asks for timetables so his office hours will suit as many people as possible!).
If u want a good mark, then dont take his class. He is funny. But u will be sorry.
Randy is hilarious and has fun in his lectures which are well presented. He is tough and expects a lot, but is fairly encouraging to each individual, and tries to explain things as best he can. He gets a little impatient and stessed sometimes, but overall he is a good guy.
hes a scientist, but not a teahcer and certainly not an easy marker.
Fantastic teacher. I would recommend him to anyone who really wants to learn and understand chemistry. It's so obvious how much he loves Chemistry and that makes it sooooo easy to learn from him. Take him for Chem!!
He is really hilarious to learn from. Chemistry isn't a hard subject and not to fun but he brings in a lot of energy. I loved going to class to see some funky new ties each day
THis was the hardest class i ever took at douglas for sciences. I would not take it wit this prof if i was u.
He marks so HARD!!! it's just crazy!! his notes are okay, pretty clear and straight forward..but then too much writing..should've give students all the notes and let them follow along instead of wasting their time writing..
Randy is one of the best professors I have ever had. He is very enthusiastic about his subject, he is a fair marker, he tells you exactly what's going to be on the test (he gives objectives that are the same as the test questions). The only one's who don't like him, are the one's who don't study!!
This man is far too obsessed with Chem to teach anything else without making references to it. He REFUSES to commit to what he'll put on the tests you so pretty much have to study everything. Text-book heavy. Tests have too many paragraph responses for a science course.
Randy is a great teacher! He explains things really clearly and is so helpful. He uses WEBCT and I liked that a lot. He is a HARD marker though, but he tells you exactly what you need to know with a list of objectives.
Randy's a really nice guy. The way he addresses your questions in class can be mistaken for "meaness". His teaching is very clear cuz he's into it. Randy is an extremely hard marker. If u want a nice prof, this is the guy for u. If u want marks so u can move on, he's NOT for u. GPA is low if u pass.
He has to be the most positve & cheery Chem teacher ever. He really wants his students to do well and it really shows. You feel like you don't want to dissapoint him. There is nothing bad to say about him. He's absolutely amazing. Remembers your name even after taking his class. Course is hard thoug
a great teacher, very organized, hard marker, what I'm trying to say is that if you wanna learn chmistry, take it with him but if you wanna get some good mark, dont even think about it
Randy is a very organized and thorough teacher. U will never have a question on a test that he didn't teach you in class. There is no suprises. He is a bit of a tough marker, but chemistry is scaled so it doesn't matter. I highly recommend him.
Hard Marker (give 1/4 marks);lectures are good so don't miss class, No surprises on exams(study objectives and you'll be fine).Excellent lecturer, passionate about teaching(takes on role as "Super Chemist").Overall really nice teacher who you don't want to disappoint.Taking class again with KT(hot!)
terrible. Pulls grades right out of his ass. Heavy on participation marks (which we all know are just a way to pick favourites and screw everyone else up the ass!!) Only likes enthusiasts= BARF!!!
1/4 mark SUCKS!!! 1/4 mark SUCKS!!! 1/4 mark SUCKS!!! Got the idea??? I agree with whoever rated Randy on July 1 that he plays favour.
He is a very good teacher. I've noticed the only people that don't like him are the people who don't study. I recommend him to anyone who wants to learn chemistry from an enthusiastic, fair teacher.
Too energetic when I had his 8:00 class.Unfair in attendance mark as I always in class on time and somehow I didn't get perfect.I was very shy in class and hardly asked or answered any questions. If U're not as talkative and energetic as Randy Alex, don't take his class.I agree that 1/4 mark SUCKS!
In this class you need to be on the ball but with the shear effort and determination this teacher actually puts in its easily done. Im very glad I had him as a teacher, he made chemistry come alive and extremely enjoyable. Just do 2 things, 1) Pay attention and participate in lecture (speak up in lecture), 2) Do your homework and ask him questions.
Rambles on&on sometimes in words that dont sound like english or just in words that are a higher level than a 1st year chem students intellect. Both fair and unfair. has no sympathy for students working hard trying to study for other final exams near the end of the semester, piles assignments on you and throws quizzes at you. NOT TOO BAD. .BUT BAD
he sucks
Randy is the best, most enthusiastic, fair, approachable and nicest teacher you can ever imagine to have for anorganic chemistry. A limit of 350 words is not enough to write everything positive about him ;-)
This class was environmental ethics, different lecturer every day, all material was from lectures=insanity!! Had to drop this class. If u don't do lectures well, don't take randy alex. Marks assignments arbitrarily=looks for anything to dock u marks. will not take this instructor ever again. He's nice, but teaching and marking sucks.
He is so enthusiastic I don't know where he gets his energy from. He isn't a boring teacher so pay attention in class. If he looks at you, stare back at him til he finally looks away. Do your homework before hand and study more than a day before tests coz he won't answer any questions anymore if you asked the day before the test. He's pretty cool.
He is a good teacher but only problem is that is tests are too much based in theory and less on numbers. it could be bad or good. make sure you do the assn. and make sure u go over course objectives. attend all the lectures. and try to be in his good list students. tests are hard but if u do all the HW and course objectives u will be fine. overall
what an ass! This guy has freakin' split personalities. He seems so sweet at first and really approachable, but yah, not so much. If you ask questions in class he makes you look like a jerk and if the class doesn't understand what he is saying, he spazes out and just leaves it. Yah, that's good! He expects you to put in at least 21 hrs hw/wk.
Never take his courses.he sucks. The worst taecher.
i strongly agree w/ the rating listed on nov 27.he made very hard & long quiz for the lab & talk too much.he seemed to be nice at the beginning (always smile) but he will stab your back.he's not the lab instructor but he often gave instruction in the lab.on pH lab, he talked too long + quiz and we didn't have time to do the lab.pls leave the lab!!!
He is the biggest geek around. His class was okay, do homework study hard and there you go. He seems like a nice guy but he's not, if you don't show up to class thats it for you he won't help you. like he says "I could go on hours and hours" saying how much he sucks, "but we just don't have that kind of time". Take him only if you have to.
just don't take him/worst teacher/if u do take him, never skip any of his class/randy has the best memory beyond the ability of a normal human, and if he remembered u skipped his class, he would not help u/randy is very bias/either he likes u (no penalty for late assignment if u have medical excuse) or he doesn't like u (marks off everywhere).
listen to me and you'll be happy: DONT TAKE HIM FOR CHEMISTRY period.
Randy has split personality. The good side of him shows passion in teaching. The bad side of him loves to see his students suffer. Tests and quiz are extremely difficult. He knew I'm retaking this course and he gave me a different quiz than everyone else in the lab. Is this fair to me? He thinks u're a failure when u retake the course. FREAK!
SHOW NO MERCY. IF HE DOESN'T LIKE YOU IN THE BEGINNING, YOU ARE DEAD! ACT TO BE NICE BUT HIS CLASS IS HELL!!! YOU WILL REGRET IF YOU TAKE RANDY ALEX.
i looked forward to his 830 am classes. i dont know what all these other people are talking about. randy is a great guy. he really wanted to help us do well, even though his test were the toughest things i have ever done, even if you studied for weeks upon weeks i dont know if you would be ready. though his jokes made up for it.
I am usually a good judge of character, not this time though! Randy is over-the-top enthusiastic, and I thought that he was a nice guy up until the second half of the semester when his true colors started to show. He's arrogant, condescending and RUDE. His office hours are almost nonexistant. His attitude is fake. Avoid taking him if you can!
fake.. fake ... and fake that's all he is. his jokes are not worth listeningg and he skips some of the materials in the text and expects you to teach them to yourself. the average for his midterms were never higher than 60%, with very little standard deviation. bad teacher!!!!!
This guy is a LOSER!!!!!! Easily one of the worst teachers i have ever had, second only to scott. He seems nice for the first few classes and then he just turns into a giant ****! He is arrogant and rude. Basically he is just out to screw his students over. DO NOT TAKE HIM HE IS A ****!!!!!
DONT TAKE HIM PERIOD.you WILL regret.
Extremely knowledgeable and VERY excited about chemistry. Tests are gruelling: not ridiculously hard, but moderately so, and LOOOOONG. Do your homework. Look at the objectives. Mark your own assignments and drill yourself for speed.
he's a very unfair marker on the tests and has no emphasis what soever on the calculation portion of the course which is most of the course. his enthusiasm doesnt make up for his lack of clarity and unfairness. don't take him he enjoys plotting the stats of failing students after tests. you're basically on your own in this guy's class
Very knowledgeable and passionate about chemistry. However, he cannot teach. His level of understanding is much higher than ours so I think it?s difficult for him to relate. Very hard marker, has high expectations.
DO NOT TAKE HIS COURSE!!!
if u want to boost u GPA, don't choose him as u teacher.
Overall Randy is a good teacher, and explains the material very clearly. He is a hard marker, and has quite a few assignments, but if you work hard, the course is easy enough to get through and the tests are fair. The only bad thing is, he says he's always avaiable for help, but when you actually go in to see him, he's not very helpful at all.
He is the worst teacher I have had: he tend to disapper at his office hours despite indicating he will be there, his exam are hard and he even marks it in the worst possible way. Avoid him in all the possible ways.
Good teacher. Definitely understands the topics and can teach relatively well. However, he is quite a hard marker, so unless you have a lot of free to time study, choose someone else
Very very very hard course. Randy is not very good at explaining it. Study your text like it is the bible and go to class.. if you do that you'll do okay
if you want to get an A+ in his class just make sure you do all the home work and understand it.Also you MUST memorize the answers to all of the course objectives cause he expects perfect answers on the tests which are based on those objectives.
I am a strong participator in his class, and I liked him at first, however I am slowly getting tired of this teacher. Nice at the beginning, but he quickly turns condescending and outright rude. He has little patience and will stab you in the back. He makes students feel like garbage... I'm not happy at all with him, and regret taking his class.
You know there is something wrong with this teacher when his class average on a quiz is 15%.
Randy is an amazing prof! He has so much enthusiasm and energy, I love it! He frequently challenges us to expand our knowledge about chemistry. His lectures, a little on the long side, are always engaging. He does not give much homework in this course however, but the term project requires a lot of lab work.
I agree with most of the comments here, he starts out okay, but then turns evil. a few times in class someone would give a correct answer and he would say it's wrong, but the answer was correct. 1 time a student gave a suggestion about buying the on-line version of a book, and the expression in his face was one of surprise and rage. Very arrogant!
he is so much enthusiastic and knows every material we need to know for this course. However, his level of understanding is much deeper and higher than ours, so dont take this course if your understanding level is low. He is also very a hard marker, so you need to know every answer in the course objective. missing single words, huge marks off
Randy is an entertaining, enthusiastic and organized instructor. He enjoys telling corny chemistry jokes and seems to genuinely want the class to do well. Most of his overhead lecture notes are typed, and he will hand them out prior to the lecture so that you can listen to what he?s teaching instead of writing notes. Randy assigns lots of homewo
(con't) homework from the textbook and cross-references it extensively. He also assigns homework that can only be completed online. He expects A students to spend ~20 hours studying chemistry per week. As such, he?s a very tough marker and expects perfect and thorough answers. Though it seems like he deducts f 1/4 marks for practically anything.
Avoid Randy at all costs. He wants to be a good teacher, but his teaching style and arrogance gets in the way. He talks to you like your a moron and doesn't explain things clearly. If you want a good mark, take another prof. His marking is ridiculous, and not very fair. Avoid him!
He is a very fun teacher. tells a lot of jokes. He isn't very good at explaining things, but he is very willing to help you during his office hours. He offers students to email him with help if they can't get to him at school. His tests are HARD and he takes off a lot of marks for little mistakes, but he will give extra marks for trying hard
He's a great prof! No one wants to take an 8am class, especially something like Chemistry, but he made lectures interesting with a positive attitude and his jokes. The tests are not easy but as long as you review you'll do well. The homework assignments are SUPER helpful, they're pretty much all you need to study before the tests.
He expects you to spend 2-3 hours studying for every hour spent in lecture (on his syllabus). Gives a few worked examples in class, the problems on tests are way harder. He is an OK teacher but Yanguo and Brenda are better ( their class averages are higher). P.S. The lab tech Scot is creepy.
At first I was upset that he was a super picky marker but after the first quiz there is no excuse for not knowing how he wants you to answer. He's like one of those high school teachers you remember forever. He really likes his job and it makes class a lot more fun.
Randy is an awesome teacher. I didnt get the greatest mark b/c I am terrible at math. He is more than willing to help you if you need it. He is so passionate about his teaching and subject that you can't help but love his classes. I would take another class with him if I didn't hate math so much!
Randy is simply the bomb. He expects you to be diligent - he knows it's good for you. He prepares people for the things to come, which has been the most valuable part of knowing Randy Alex. He has a heart of gold too ;)
Very arrogant and picky marker; 1/4 off here and there; very helpful only if he likes you, impatient otherwise; expected to write purpose in one long sentence; quiz are extremely difficult; expect to spend 20+ hour to study weekly; oh well I did well only because I am smart
He seems like a nice guy to some people. The problem is, if you're not on his favorite list he completely flips..he doesn't make himself available to you for help and expects you to do bad
so bad. no proper lecture notes, doesn't teach what he expects us to know. to do well you really have to go above and beyond. good luck getting help if he doesnt like you.
Very tough professor. He is very passionate and will help explain when you don't understand something but wow his tests and marking is so harsh. He gives 1/4 marks and looks to take marks off. He prints off notes for class though so it is helpful for studying.
absolutely boring, talks WAAAYYY TOO MUCH, repeats unneccessary things all the TIME, try your best to avoid him! his tests and quizes are just ridiculous, will never talk any courses with him nor will i ever ask him for help again. just bad, really bad
The most difficult marker, its ridiculous how much detail he wants for his answers. Test questions are resonable but his marking techniques are horrific. If he likes you ask questions, if not be prepared to get embarrassed infront of your entire class.
i died in this class
RANDY IS A GOOD TEACHER BUT HIS TESTS ARE VERY HARD. BE PREPARED TO WORK HARD BUT IF YOU DO IT WILL PAY OF. DONT SKIP ANY LECTURES.
he marks really hard for the tests and exam especially definition and qualitative questions. he speaks clearly during lecture, but may bore and make you sleepy. he gives out handouts for every chapter and also detailed course objective. rely on that objective for test preparation, it's essential! get ready to review some materials by yourself.
Harrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrd marker, take 1/4 here, take1/4 there, and fianlly get a 1/4, but he is alwaya willing to help you, very nice guy when it comes to ask him questions.
Excellent Professor, really want the students to succeed. The material was very difficult. You need to spend 3 hours for every 1 hour of lecture to get a top mark.
Randy is a great teacher and a very brilliant man! He is very clear with what you need to do to succeed in his class; work hard and put in time!He is a tough marker but he is also a fair marker, meaning he tells you what he's looking for on his exams. Use the course outline he gives you to study for his exams! Will definitely take his class again!
Randy is a well organized prof. His lectures are very detailed, which clearly explains the important topics throughout the course. While he is an old prof, he is very approachable and understanding when you ask for help. Showing interest in the course will easily pass you through the course. Put in the effort, floating by will not pass you.
Always makes sure that there are no surprises; you always know when an assignment is due or a quiz will be. He always makes sure that everyone knows whats going on and leaves no man behind. Genuinely wants everyone to do well. not a Tough marker/ makes you show all your logic but in the long run its handy. If you stay on top of things you're golden
Great lectures! The only complaint I have is sometimes he yells and whispers for theatrical effect, which can negatively impact audibility or jolt you. Some quizzes are very time-constrained considering content, and the final was tougher than the sample he handed out. Brushed over a few subjects at the end, but they were pretty simple concepts.
Good professor. Sometimes gets a bit excited in class which can be somewhat distracting.
I want Randy to have my children
One of the best professors I've had, changed campuses to continue in Chem with Randy. Lectures are inspiring, he does his best to keep it interesting. Hes a hard marker, but if you do the homework and show up, as well as actually study 3 hours per hour of lecture (like any chem prof will tell you) theres no reason you cant get an A+ like I did
I suggest taking the class with a different instructor. His tests are open ended. His marking scheme always gets you; he unnecessarily docks a couple of marks just because you worded the answer differently. Although he generously gives out bonus marks here and there, that still does not compensate for his bad teaching style. He should retire.
Randy Alex was an awesome teacher. I know many people will say he is a hard marker but it is no surprise what he expects from you, he tells you exactly what he is looking for. So if you're paying attention and committed you'll be fine. He's incredibly smart and his outdated but humble humor makes his class that much better. Inspirational!
Randy's class was the hardest academic endeavour of my life. infinitely harder then any other course I've taken. However, 8 hour study days slowly moulded me into a good student. I will forever be indebted to Randy Alex, as he transformed me as a student. Thank you.
