Lectures are great. Learned a lot. The exams are on the difficult side.
I learned so much. I pass it on to anyone else I know. And, his approach is so cool. I admit some of the lectures are boring, but if you plan to go on in history, it's a good foundation.
he's great
AWESOME CLASS! BERGSTROM IS A WONDERFUL PROF! You will learn A LOT, however, most likely you will get screwed over by the TA's...A papers turn into C- papers...be careful...and switch to P/np if you get less than a B+ on the midterm.
he is probably one of the best teachers i have ever had. the class (history 7) was amazing and professor bergstrom was incredibly helpful.
History 7 was a fantastic class. He's a great speaker, and always clear and very helpful. As a bonus, he helped me with some questions I had that were far outside the class curriculum
really great speaker! funny in subtle times :) super nice and cares for his students
I took this in the summer school session B with 2 other classes and worked so im not sure how truly difficult he is. it was a lot of reading but the guy is totally nice and totally wants to help you understand anything if you have questions. worth taking
Very good history professor. Although I took for summer session, he is a great lecturer with many slides, jokes, interesting information etc. that really makes history a pleasure to learn unlike to many other professors...
Great joke tellers lol. Lectures are very relaxing and easy~ Highly recommanded.
Taking this teacher for the third time!
he's amazing! i love his class. totally funny and awesome! open to differing opinions and in favor of class discussion. highly recommended!
GREAT Professor. Really engaging. Available during his office hours and for appointments. Interesting assignments. Very knowledgeable and friendly.

He's very nice, always positive and uplifting, and very clear! I love having him as a professor!
He's entertaining and well read; he knows what he's talking about. Also very enthusiastic and a joy to listen to. Classroom atmosphere is relaxed and inviting.
so cool...i didnt like history...but he explains things in an interesting and funny way....the TAs on the other hand......watch out for them.

Well, I have to admit that I was bit surprised reading the sterling reviews of past reviewers. While he does make jokes and is nice, his lectures are usually concentrated on vague concepts. It's always discouraging when students start leaving class..
Very funny and creative. Makes lecture interesting. Class requires a lot of reading.
Great guy, very funny. Sometimes rambles and talks abstractly, not making very much sense but is really approachable and willing to help whenever you need, I highly recommend him!
Bergstrom's the BEST TEACHER I've ever had at UCSB! Very open-minded and incredibly wise and so passionate about what he's talking about; It's inspiring! Don't expect the class to be a blow off, but definitely take the class if you're interested in the subject.
Professor Bergstrom is extremely knowledgable. If you enjoy history,he is your guy! However, make sure to attend all the lectures and play close attention to everything he says... he moves quickly and it's easy to miss some details.
This class was ver enjoyable but alot of work:2term papers, midterm, final, mandatory movies, and 2 extra papers.Bergstrom's lectures are very fast paced but interesting...he is very passionate about the subject! I def. recommend this class just be prepared to do a lot of work. Also, go to office hours!
Professor Bergstrom really brings an enthusiasm and passion to the subject. Well informed, fast paced lectures; a lot of work required however, not especially laid back. Includes a midterm, term paper, final, mandatory movie viewings, and demanding reading; if you're into history or looking for a challenging class, I'd recommend him.
The prof is very nice, but the TA's screw u over big times !! Really hard class, but interesting
i love prof. bergstrom! he's super smart and really funny. he makes the lectures interesting. the readings are on the heavier side, but as long as you go to class, you don't really have to read. great class with a great professor.
I really enjoyed this class. He has a great vocab and excellent speaker; Maeve Devoy was a great TA. HOWEVER: the final and midterm are VERY hard. Lots of content and 3 hours of writing an essay for which you do not know the questions before hand. I felt like crying. Had a 4.0 before this class and I got an A- just to show how hard it is
Great lecturer. Good class, but some reading.
i loved this class even tho i didnt care too much for the reading. lectures are very enjoyable. take this class with bergstrom!!
One of the best professors i've had. 3 Hour lecture was hard, but if anyone could make it work, its him. Hilarious/keeps lecture very interesting and knows/very passionate about what he is teaching
MAN this class was hard. I really like Bergstrom, but it was so hard trying to take notes and listen..I strongly suggest a recorder. The TAs are great..esp. Monica. The reading is ok, but it's not like normal history fact-and-answer like..VERY ABSTRACT be prepared to THINK critically A LOT on the long essay tests.
He's such a great lectuer - very funny and gets everyone engaged. However there is a vast amount of reading, you pretty much have to spend almost two hours a day on the readings to fully understand everything.
he is very engaging and enthuastic for such a big class. its kind of boring since the information is not interesting at all but he tries really hard. there is a lot of reading but you dont have to read ALL of it. get the TA, Monica Sanchez, shes super helpful and sends a lot of information through email. She is knowledgable about history
really interesting lectures, tries to engage the class. lots and lots of reading in the reader, text, and two novels required to read. lots of homework in the sections. overall good, despite all the work needed to put into it. midterm is in essay format. grading is a little harsh.
I hate history, but Bergstrom made it fun. Great teacher with a good sense of humor. If you have to take a history class, taking it with him is by far the least painful way to do it.
nice and funny guy but his lectures are incredibly hard to follow. Lots and lots of reading. midterm and final is essay form. Dont rely on the study guide completely either.
Bergstrom is a great professor in this sense that he gives loosely organized and in-depth lectures on the history of the time period. He made history fun and accessible. The course involves quite a bit of reading, but the level of work and grading depends very much on the TA you get; none are particularly easy, but some are more difficult.
The professor engaged students with interactive assignments. There's a lot of reading involved. The tests weren't too bad since he gave a studyguide. Your grade really depends on which TA you get.
lectures get extremely boring, nonetheless bergstrom is a cool dude. try to understand the themes and topics of every decade. but it is true - grades do depend on which ta you get.

if you go to lecture you really dont need to do the readings. tests are exactly what he tells you they will be.
confusing lecturer in my opinion... lots of critical thinking compared to most history classes. He doesn't teach history but wants you to really pick it apart and create opinion on it. caffeine before the lecture's are good... pretty boring
I can definitely see why some would definitely like bergstrom, but I enjoyed myself a lot. The curriculum is more concept oriented than fact oriented, so I think that turns a lot of kids off. There's a LOT of work involved, but if you do it and go to lecture you'll be fine.
one of the best history profs at ucsb. he is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about the subject he teaches- everything is really clear. you do have to read and participate, and the paper was challenging- but if you do the work you'll be fine
Pretty cool professor. Likes to poke at fun sometimes. For the most part, laid-back.
I'm not exaggerating/joking when I say this, but Bergstrom has literally changed my life. Great professor, actually cares about the students, and makes the class engaging and interesting. I wish we had more Bergstroms at UCSB.
Extremely difficult content matter, but if you are willing to work hard and visit Bergstrom in office hours, the class is well-worth your time. Excellent lecturer, but he makes you think very critically.
Bergstrom is a really great professor. Really cares about the students. The class requires you to work for it, but the guest lecturers are usually interesting and Bergstrom is totally supportive. Guy is there for his students. Really happy I had him as a professor. Take the class, just put the work in.
his lectures are hard to follow, unless you know the stuff beforehand. has a sense of humor, however i often get bored. but he's a cool person overall.
He is one of my least favorite history professors, and I'm a history major so I have had quite a few. His lectures are almost completely devoid of structure and content. I highly suggest buying the textbook for this class because you will need it.
Great lecturer, keeps it interesting by engaging the class with questions about the significance of historical events. Grade is based on typical history ids and essay exams, a 1800 word paper, and section. Overall an easy and enjoyable class, I plan on taking more classes with Bergstrom.
This was an easy class itself since his midterm and final exam questions were really about broad concepts. The paper is weird because you write one paper and then your second paper is an extension of that paper. He seems like a nice guy but I don't like his teaching style. He talks AT you rather than TO you. Going to lecture is not necessary easy A
As much as I dislike History, I enjoyed this class. Professor Bergstrom is very passionate about history. Lectures were engaging and informative. There is a lot of reading, but as long as you attend section and do 75% of it, you'll be fine. He held study sessions b4 both exams and it helped A LOT! I wouldn't have done so well without it.
The quantity of reading in this class is RIDICULOUS. Bergstrom is a great guy and all, but I felt like he lacked direction in his lectures. Sometimes we'd spend days on a single rambling topic, and speed by others way too fast, and you're expected to know all at intense levels of detail.
Excellent class. Lecture style is engaging, lots of information, great sense of humor. Lots of reading, need to be prepared to discuss. Exam study guides helpful. Would take another class from him any time.
BEST PROFESSOR. If you have him, you are lucky. His lectures are crystal clear, right to the point, and never wasteful. MUST go to lecture, though, as readings themselves are not enough to get you a passing mark. No textbooks, only two readers. EXTREMELY HELPFUL, anytime of the day, for whatever topic. TAKE HIS CLASS NOW
This is the funniest, nicest, most charismatic teacher at UCSB! He WANTS you to do well, made the 3 hour class bearable, and was extremely fair and understanding about assignments and absences. LOVED him I recommend any class with him. Every week I did some of the reading, just take good notes and you'll be fine.
I had Bergstrom at UCSB in the late 1980s, probably the best professor I had in history and I was a history major. He's very helpful, I spent a lot of time in his office getting help on writing a paper. You have to read, but the lectures are fun I interesting. I now teach & use information I learned in his class. TAKE HIM! Plus, he's really cool
his lectures were unclear+he would go fast in class. he would jump btwn topics too, so it was very confusing to keep up. some of the stuff in his lecture was not relevant to what would come in the exams. Also the exams were hard, his exams are cumulative and he expects you to remember EVERYTHING, Dates, places, names, etc. no page of notes allowed.
Very engaging lectures. The slides are very minimal, but his commentary is clear. He's also very receptive to questions and answers them clearly as well. The readings were rather dense, but over all I definitely learned a lot.
He's a great lecturer who loves to engage with his students. The material can get pretty dense, but he keeps it relatively interesting. The guest lecturers can be pretty hit or miss, but overall I think this is a good class.
Bergstrom was one of my favorite professors at UCSB, He Is funny and a master of what he is teaching. The class I was in was 3 hours long once a week and he made it interesting throughout. Definitely take his class
I loved this class! Bergstrom is so engaging and brilliant - he really knows what he's talking about. He encourages class discussion and truly listens to your ideas. The class isn't easy, but as long as you do the reading and pay attention in class you should be fine. I highly recommend him!
he's really passionate about his history. study sessions offered before tests, and you'll do well if you do the readings which aren't half bad.
Bergstrom is an incredible professor. He is incredibly smart and knowledgeable. I have noticed that he encourages input by students and allows for fluidity in his classes. However, he can follow a rigid structure when attempting to breeze through material, which is where I have gotten bored and lost. Other than that, I recommend taking his classes.
Bergstrom is a really funny guy! He knows his stuff but I would get lost in his lectures because he asks like 20 questions back to back... He takes a long time on some topics and not enough on others. You read A LOT and it can be pretty dense.
class depends on attendance to guest lectures and a lot of heavy reading. material can be quite dense
Now he's a great professor, i loved him. He's funny in a strange way but he makes lecture fun since history can get boring. MUST BUY READER it saves you!!! If you read the reader and go to section you will get an A. Overall he's an amazing professor and i hope get to take him again. LOTS OF GUEST LECTURES
An absolutely amazing professor. His assignments are fair and rarely numerous and his sense of humor is great. Although I never really needed to seek help outside of class (very straightforward lectures), I got the sense that he was always willing to help. In his honors section he was a great listener and showed a lot of respect for student input.
Professor Bergstrom is by far my favorite professor at UCSB. He clearly demonstrates a passion and expertise for policy history and it wears off on his students. His grading is flexible and he's very willing to offer extensionsdelays based on your own individual circumstances. Bergstrom's also a great listener and new ideas are always welcome.
Ah yes, the elusive Prof Bergstrom. As a former Public Policy major I worked closely with Bergstrom, and oftentimes found myself both amazed and frustrated at his genius. He is a wonderful professor and advisor. He is so engulfed in various positions: he sometimes forgets his duties as an advisor - catch him during office hours. Highly recommend
This professor is great! He really wants students to do well. There is one midterm and one final and participation counts. I am not an history major so I had to work a little more to get through., but he is willing to help you get better and adjust to your schedule! Nice guy
I am not a psychology major so this class was hard for me. There is a midterm and final and participation counts. He is funny but his lectures get boring. The subject itself wasn't interesting but a nice guy to know.
Awesome teacher. He likes when the students participate and engage in the material. The midterm and final were easy and not graded harshly. I would recommend for any major to take this class, it was hands down the best class I have taken at UCSB.
Bergstrom sucks because he talks in circles about material he has no mastery of. The guest lecturers are the way to go, and provide the info needed to pass. Never cuts to the chase during lecture and is ambiguous about what he's looking for because the content is so broad. I've never had to read so much for another class. Not a fan.
love Bergstrom! I used to hate history just cause I didn't know how to read and study for it, but his teachings have made it way more clear and I actually somewhat like reading history now :)
Really cool professor, the structure of the course is super engaging and gives you so much info on so many different topics. Professor is really engaging and witty, makes going to class 100% worth it, highly recommend!
Bergstrom is a true gent. Very entertaining, effusive fellow. Engages with students during lecture, and assigns readings that most social science junkies would find interesting or better. Slow grader, but grades with a civil hand. It was an honor to take a class with him.
I would rather OD on yerb than listen to this dude speak. Bergstorm is the epitome of terrible dad jokes gone wrong. Even my grandma who is like 85 has a sense of humor. Other than that, easy A, just do the readings and review notes at the end of each lecture.
Worst history professor I have ever had. Lectures are unclear, boring, and convoluted. Horrible midterm format as well. Pray for a good TA as well because my TA is practically useless.
Bergstrom is not a good lecturer, period. He rarely ever speaks on specifics, mostly just talking about generalities that he believes in and failing to put any evidence for the generalities he talks in circles about. The midterm and final for this class were easy and just based on general knowledge you probably already had from highschool.
He's a very intelligent man but his lectures are boring, hard to follow, and have nothing to do with what's in the book. There is a lot of reading but if you know the basics, you'll do fine on the midterm and final.
Bergstrom is a really nice guy but an awful lecturer. The midterm and final are based on IDs and essays and are pretty easy. Honestly though your TA will make or break your grade so just hope you get a good one.
Not a bad dude, his lectures just weren't the most interesting or easy to follow. Lots of jumping around on slides that don't have enough text/aren't relevant to what he's actually talking about. Focuses on the big picture too much and forgets to cover the actual names/dates. Pretty heavy reading, and tests were almost identical to study guides!
Literally the worst professor in the history department. A complete lack of understanding for student responsibility and careless lectures. Terrible grader and terribly disorganized. Absolutely do not take this professor, no matter how much you need a course in history; save yourself.
Very nice guy, but lectures were most disorganized I've ever seen and there was no continuity between them. He focused too much on big picture stuff and always put a bunch of analytical questions on his slides without answering them. Never really explained the cases we studied had great issues in public policy, which was literally the class title.
Literally the worst professor at UCSB. This class was so unorganized and he expected you to know every detail of every case, even though they were so confusing. His analysis is meaningless, the guest lectures are the only thing you need. He made me seriously consider dropping the history major. Take at your own risk. Hardest class I've taken here
He is a decent lecturer but at times he would ramble or pause too frequently for questions. The material is really interesting especially if you are interested in possibly working in government later in life. Be sure to study well in advance for the midterm and final since he can be a tough grader.
Lectures make no sense... rambles on wayyyy too much.
Bergstom is an amazing dude and I have loved being his student. It's obvious he's passionate about the subject and teaching it to us. However, he's not a good lecturer. It's super disorganized and hard to follow. You don't actually have to do the readings, just pay attention in guest lectures... don't waste your time there.
It's a tough course but extremely rewarding. Prof. Bergstrom's own lectures are very broad and hint as to what themes of an event you should pay attention to. Most of what you learn comes from the readings and the guest lecturers. Readings are very long. Graded on midterm, final, a term paper, and participation. TA was unhelpful.
Similar to the class itself, Bergstroms lectures can be all over the place at times leaving you stuck with the reading to really grasp whats going onand boy is it a lot of reading. Attending the guest lectures and reading are easily the most important parts of this class. I wouldnt recommend you take this class unless youre required to do so.
One paper, midterm, and final. I personally found the readings helpful, but if you just take good notes for the guest lectures which usually summarize the readings, you're fine. The midterm/final have ID terms and essays. Easy A imo.
hes a good teacher! I was able to pass the class without really doing much of the reading but I attended every lecture (he does short answer group quizzes in class) and I did brief reading to study up and be knowledgable and watched videos and read about the texts that interested me (actually most were pretty int.!) so I wasn't completely lost
Professor Bergstrom is a great professor who is always willing to converse with his students about course material, person life, and career goals. I did not do 50% of the readings, so I know that if I did, I could have easily gotten an A+. Not an A, but an A+. He pretty much gives the exam(s) answers on his study guides. Study groups help!
Professor Bergstrom is one of my favorite professors I have had at UCSB. His lectures are informative and well-researched. He encourages the class to interact with the material and each other and is very funny. You can tell that he cares about his students. He expects you to read for class, but it is reasonable and relevant!
Prof Bergstrom is great - he really engages with students. While I didn't do all the readings, attending lectures and using Unstuck study for prep helped me get a solid B. Definitely recommend the class!
