Excellent teacher. Very concise. Helpful after class. I actually understand chemistry when Coleman teaches!
amazing, fantastic, best teacher I've ever had
He lectures well and is very helpful in office hours. I finally understand organic chemistry.
Terrific teacher, lots of character, very willing to help outside and inside of class! I hope to take one of his other classes eventually.
Great teacher. Straightforward. The objectives for tests are very clear. Nerdy but entertaining. Friendly and will help you out if you need to reschedule assignments. Quizzes are effin' hard!
WONDERFUL! His organization and helpfulness made my Organic grade from Orgo I to Orgo II increase dramatically. His enthusiasm is contagious. I would take any class he offered. Extremely intelligent.
this class was not as good as his organic II class...the tests are graded harshly sometimes but overall it is a good class. don't take any other hard classes though at the same time. and don't be fooled by the easiness of the first test!
Prof. coleman purposefully chooses to teach at 8am. but that's the only drawback to his class really. straightforward, organized. don't be fooled by easy first test. take a look at his objectives ask for clarity. lil nerdy. thinks we all want to be md's.
Class information given at a break-neck speed, not focusing on what's important (i.e. what will be on the exams). Far too much information is on each exam. Expectations are unreasonable, and professor is condescending and rude to struggling students.
Professor Coleman is a very enthusiastic and organised professor(however he always has class at 8). However Biochem is miserable. I would say that biochem is by far the most intense and ridiculous class in terms of memorization (orgo I and II included).
A very understanding professor! He cares more about you than the subject. If you talk to him in his office, he wants to get to know you before speaking of work. He helps you any way he can. The material is hard, but the professor is understanding.
Never thought Orgo could be even a little interesting, but he linked it to a lot of the bio side of things. Very Helpful Prof. Tests are hard but fair.
I came into this class HATING orgo. Now that i've taken it i'm slightly interested in the crap. He makes a ROUGH class managable. Class worth taking.
Not an Easy A but very managable if you know how to study for his tests, great lecturer, one of the few teachers at WM who can actually explain difficult concepts
Coleman's first seminar was an absolute hit, and just based on that I can't wait to take more of his classes. If he offers another seminar, for heaven's sake, TAKE IT! He's not a difficult grader and is extremely available anytime you need help. He knows his stuff and can make it understandable!
I really like this professor. He is extremely clear in his lectures. His tests are difficult but you'll do well if you study. He gives many midterms, and drops your lowest score so that you have a chance of gettinga good grade, if you messed up at some point. He's always available to help. His review sessions are extremly helpful.
he is very friendly
his tests are hard but fair, if i studied more i could get an a. you have to know the material b/c it is all completion stuff. he is one of the most caring professors at wm. he takes interest in his students before orgo. when you're stressed and you just happen to have an appt with him he explains how stress interferes with learning and memory.
Professor Coleman is a wonderful teacher. His tests are tough, but fair. If you ever have any problems, he is there to help. As long as you study hard, keep up with his notes, you will do fine.
Coleman is the man. Straightforward exams, very helpful, easy to understand in class, and amusing. He always tries to integrate real biological applications into his chemistry and sincerely wants all of his students to do well. Highly recommended, if you have the choice to take it.
I agree with all of the above comments. Coleman is a very good professor, and while his class was at 8 in the morning, he managed to keep it pretty interesting. He is also a very fair grader.
Though his classes are at 8am, he's worth it! He really knows what he's talking about, and tells you a lot of information that will not be tested on, just because it is so interesting! Don't worry though, he'll tell you what won't be on the test. His objectives for biochem are a tad unclear, but go tot he weekly review sessions and ask him about it
I had Coleman both for orgo II and for biochem, and despite not really enjoying chemistry, I really enjoyed both classes. Coleman has the ability to make really boring material somewhat interesting and to apply what you are learning to the real world. He is extremely helpful outside of class and met with me multiple times before each test
Had him for a freshman seminar (chem of emotions) and also for a research advisor. Nice guy, chooses great books for the class. four 2 page papers and 1 8 page final. Easy grader... smart guy. If you like the topic, you will like the class.
This freshman seminar was absolutely wonderful. There is quite a bit of reading, but only 4 short papers and one term paper. The class is very interesting and there's great discussion. Coleman is very helpful and nice, and grades pretty easily. I really recommend this class!
Tests: really need to understand all concepts; memorizing reactions is a MUST - 16 pages of reactions and mechanisms for the final, with reaction and synthesis problems on every test; don't really need to read or do problems unless something isn't understood.........Professor: Thinks he's funny. He is not. Sweet guy, helpful when needed!
In my opinion, Orgo II is one of the easiest premed/chem classes @ W&M. Tests are just a regurgitation of his NOTES and follow the EXACT same structure from previous tests posted on Blackboard. The final class avg was a 74%, but that's because most people are retarded and studying 1 night before the test.
Professor Coleman makes what could be a really awful class bearable. His notes are very clear and easy to understand and the exams are fair. However, they cover a lot of information so flashcards and memorization is a must! Very nice guy and very willing to help you if he can.
GREAT Professor. I've never been a fan of chemistry. 8AM classes suck as well. However, Coleman makes both of these aspects bearable. Tests are fair and straight from the notes. He makes the concepts easy to understand, and also throws in frequent biology asides for the Pre-Meds in the class which is interesting.
Had for freshman seminar. Extremely easy class! skim the readings, put a little effort into the papers, and raise your hand twice each class and you will get an A. Interesting guy and interesting course material. Coleman also makes a great advisor/research advisor
Best class I've ever taken. He makes 8 am bearable, his lectures are easy to follow, his exams are straight from the lectures, he doesn't try to trick you, and he's always available for questions. Just study in advance - that was my only downfall. You CANNOT learn this material one or two days in advance.
Class was informative, but the printouts don't help much if you have no bio background. He is helpful during office hours and wants you to succeed, but gets frustrated if you don't get it. His tests are short answer and m/c (they are worded funny so make sure you understand what he is asking!) Take Bebout's section if you are a chem major!
He only teaches at 8am, which is the only bad thing I have to say about him. Orgo is hard, so no matter who you have, you have to work. Coleman makes it easy to get all the information to do well and answers any questions you have. He's funny and tries to keep the fact that you're a bio major in mind. All in all, he's a very effective professor.
Coleman is good at teaching the material, and tells you exactly what will be on the test and won't. If you memorize all the reactions, the tests aren't bad.
I love Coleman!!!! I hated Orgo I...he made all the difference in Orgo II and my grade jumped because of his help. You need to know the material well for the tests, but he doesn't try to trick you. He's really nice and he will help you out whenever you need it. Because of Coleman I'm minoring in Chemistry.
Hard working, extremely helpful. Always willing to help in his office hours
awesome professor!
Orgo II is a hard course so don't be mislead. Advantage of Coleman is that he knows how to explain things to a student as is hes explaining things to a student. Rarely need text - study his notes. Flashcards are a MUST. Very approachable and helpful. Review sessions also helpful. An A is possible with effort.
Wonderful prof! If he writes it on the board it's on the test; if he doesn't then it wont. Puts all class notes and a recording of each lecture online!
Prof. Coleman is absolutely amazing. Organic II is incredibly complicated, but he makes everything straight forward and understandable. If you really understand the material, you will do well on the tests, no tricks. I would highly recommend him for any class you want to take at W&M.
Orgo 2 w/Coleman is basically memorizing 100 reactions and then regurgitating them on exams. The class isn't THAT hard, but you have to put in time memorizing everything. orgo2 was harder than orgo1 for me because concepts were never applied, but just route memorization, which works out for the avg WM student who likes to study 300 hours for exams
Terribly dry and robotic (HARD memorization, not concept-based) material, but Coleman actually makes it worth going to class, if only to witness his chemistry anecdotes and signature chuckle. Provides everything you need to succeed on blackboard; lectures are very clear, animated, illustrative; tests are fair, straightforward; understanding--great!
Attendance is mandatory. The lectures are a little dry but NO tests!!! You have to do 2 short papers, couple writing problem sets, a in class presentation, and a long paper (10 pages). Most of the classes were spent watching other kids presentations. He is an amazing teacher and a great guy!!!
Material is somewhat dry, but prof is an energetic lecturer and class and tests are very straightforward. LOTS of memorization - don't wait till the night before to start studying.
I thought I was going to hate this class since it really is memorizing lots and lots of reactions (I hate memorizing anything), but I actually found it to be kinda interesting, though I can't explain why. Coleman is very clear, straight forward, and tells you exactly what to know for the test. Don't worry about the book, study his lecture notes.
Dr. Coleman is helpful, clear and very interested in seeing his students do well. However, do not assume this is an easy course. There is a VERY LARGE amount of material involved. You are given guidelines prior to each test - know EVERY ASPECT of the these listed concepts, and then some. Bear in mind, there are no "easy courses" at W&M.
Prof Coleman is awesome. Even though attendance is not mandatory still come to class and sit near the front. He knows who comes to class and is extrememly helpful! Really nice and VERY clear. If you don't do well its your own fault, not his.
Coleman posts all his lecture notes with audio online, which makes attendance optional, so don't be scared off by 8 AM. Very possible to get an A without showing up at all. Lots of memorizing, but it IS organic chemistry. Explanations of material are clear and easy to understand.
I didn't go to a single lecture, but listened to them all online and found it a million times better. It is basically all memorization, which I hated, but I'm sure I could've done better if I spent a little more time studying. He's a really nice teacher, though, so get to know him!
Good Teacher. Tough material.
Coleman is one of the best profs at wm. I took Orgo II over the summer with him and Biochem this spring. His lectures are clear and he's always so excited about what he's teaching. He actually makes you want to learn the material. I would take any class he is teaching.
This guy knows what he is doing. One of the best professors at W&M!
Awesome, awesome, awesome. Loved Coleman. Amazing prof, looking forward to taking every class he teaches...really. Very helpful in and out of class, makes Organic Chem as easy as it can be..
Coleman is quite possibly the best professor at WM. He is an absolute expert about everything he teaches and teaches a very tough subject in a way that is easy to learn. You don't necessarily have to go to class because the lectures are posted online - even if you do go to class, though, this is a very valuable resource. A 90 or higher gets an A.
Very hard professor, make sure you keep up with every single lecture.
GREAT professor. posts powerpoints and audio recording of every single lecture. i took the class from my dorm room and got an A. He is crystal clear in terms of the material. You only need to know whats in the lectures. Gives a lot of midterms, which helps with your grade. hes clear, straightforward and you learn A LOT best prof ive had at WM
He is a really good professor. It isn't hard at all if you learn to memorize chemical equations. His lectures are the tests, I opened the book like twice. Good thing is it is the same book as Orgo 1, so you can't make the mistake of buying a useless book here. I definitely recommend him, but it isn't like you have much of a choice anyways.
I love Randy Coleman. His lecture style is easy to follow and he does everything he can to help you do well- posts audio files of lectures online, gives out study objectives for exams, and is always available to answer questions. Awesome. Love.
randy's got it goin on! study hard and you will succeed.
Do not need the textbook or model kit. Do not need to attend class. Lectures are online. If you put in the work, you should do fine ( I mean at least a C-, he doesn't hand out anything lower unless he feels that you deserve it). Look and study old exams. Very nice professor :)
great professor- the posted notes and voice recorded lectures are extremely helpful; you can do well even if you never go to class! (so don't let the 8AM scare you) difficult material, but he explains it well. studying a few days in advance is a must- there is simply too much material to wait until the last minute. don't need the book much either.
Test material was simple, but what he wanted for full credit was not. Great teacher and he wants us to do well.
Professor Coleman is AWESOME. His lectures are very clear, and his tests aren't too hard if you study the way he tells you to. He records his lectures and puts them online along with his notes so if you miss class sometimes it's no big deal. He's very willing to council you if you're struggling with anything.
THE. BEST. PROFESSOR. EVER. hands down. coleman is incredible. i'm not going to repeat what everyone else has said about his teaching style/methods (although it's true) but i will say that you cannot pass up the opportunity to take his class. i came into this course hating orgo, but now i honestly love it.
Absolutely loved this class. Lectures are not mandatory since he posts all material online, but they are worth attending anyway. Very clear in explaining material, and review sessions are helpful. He makes Orgo II bearable.
Had him for Orgo II and Biochem- hard classes, but Coleman's the nicest man ever. Tapes his lectures so you don't have to go to class, and makes everything simple and clear, but tests are CRAZY. You must know every detail of what he presents, and lots of memorization is involved. You'll have to work hard to get Bs.
Posts lecture notes AND audio on Bb, but I still felt like going to class made a huge difference. If I hadn't gotten lazy and stopped going (8AM MWF is hard) I would've done better. Definitely tries to make it easy for you though. Reminds me of my Grandpa!
took chemistry of emotions (freshman seminar) super easy class
MY FAVORITE PROFESSOR AT W&M! COLEMAN IS SUCH AN INTERESTING MAN AND WILL BEND OVER BACKWARDS TO HELP YOU. HIS CLASSES ARE EASY AND MADE ME SWITCH MY MAJOR. SO YEAH, TAKE HIS CLASS!
Very easy. Actually wants the students to do well and provides all in class material on bb. Prefaces organic chem with having to memorize a lot. Tests are very fair and straight from lecture notes.
Great at explaining the subject in clear, concise terms. If you take the time to go back through all of the recorded lectures (audio along with notes) which he posts online for each test, you can do very well.
Coleman makes everything in lecture very easy to understand. He does not go into much detail but covers a lot of topics. Lectures with audio files are posted online so you technically don't have to go to class! If you don't already have the textbook, don't get it! I didn't open mine once; everything comes straight from lecture.
Professor Coleman is so nice and helpful. It was just a freshman seminar (and it was at 8am, ugh), but I learned so much. I loved going to class even if I had to drag myself out of bed. Interesting class, too.
Biochemistry with Professor Coleman was a lot harder for me than Organic Chemistry with him because he teaches off of pre-made note templates rather than writing the notes out. Study hard and don't procrastinate! Biochem requires a LOT of memorizing of pathways as well as understanding some tough concepts. Beware of the multiple choice! :)
Whether in-class or online, Prof. Coleman uploads audio from each lecture to BBoard. To give online students a nearly in-class experience, he also uploads lecture videos, allowing you to follow along as he goes through his note templates. His tremendous erudition enables him to make the material feel intuitive. Wonderful, caring, fair, expects work
Tough class. Audio files were immensely helpful and I wished more Science profs does what he is doing with his online accessibility. Although I enjoyed his Orgo class, I didn't particularly like his Biochem class. Did not expect that much memorization. I would still recommend his class, he has the most experience teaching Biochem.
Freshman seminar, so very discussion based. Readings are interesting and he appreciates our feedback on them. Sweetest man I've ever met. Great start to my college career here at W&M. Highly recommend. The class is at 8am, but he makes it worth it.
RC is a top notch human being. He is passionate about Chemistry of Emotion and made me excited to jump out of bed to walk across campus to my 8AM seminar. The class requires a lot of reading, but the books are interesting and cover modern research on the brain. Class is super hard to get into during registration because it's popular & RC is lovely.
Coleman taught the course more as a biology-based course. If you didn't understand the background information, he didn't waste time to explain it. He readily admits this is a very difficult class for strictly Chem majors. I studied for weeks for his tests and never felt prepared. This is NOT an easy class.
TAKE THIS CLASS ONLINE IN THE SUMMER! I was one of five people who did it the first year and it was perfect. You have a test every friday and extremely clear and digestible video lectures that let you go at your own pace. Each video is followed by mini quizzes which are relatively easy and replace one of the tests. No final just five units
This was my third class with Coleman. I received a C- in Orgo 2, a B+ in Biochemistry, and finally an A in Neurochemistry with him. Coleman is the smartest professor I've ever met and a great human being.
He's a great professor who really cares about the students. Because it doesn't have a test to teach to, the classes were much more enjoyable and discussion based. Sometimes the class would get uncomfortably quiet, and there were a lot of papers, but as long as you keep up you should do well.
Randy C is the best. He's really nice and sweet and wants his students to do well. Biochem is a hard class with lots of memorization, but Coleman keeps it short, sweet, and to the point. It's a labor intensive process, but you'll get the grade you deserve for your effort. Class is at 8 am, but he records lectures, so don't freak out if you sleep in
Randy is an incredibly warm and wonderful person. He makes it hard to get an A, but also hard to do poorly. If you go to/listen to lectures and study, you will be fine, although it is a ton of memorization. Genuinely cares about his students!!
Professor Coleman is helpful and encouraging. He values student feedback on his course and is understanding of extenuating circumstances. I was wary of a writing- and reading-intensive seminar, but he eases you into the heaviest workload. Because the seminar is discussion-based, you have to be prepared to participate. I'm glad I took this class.
Rough class to have at 8AM but he posts all of the lectures online so you can go back and rewatch them! The best study tools for his exams are the old exams he posts on Blackboard. Reading isn't necessary but very supplemental to his lectures.
Very nice and really knows the subject. I recommend him if you like the way that biology classes are taught, as it is very similar to a biology class and nothing like a chemistry class. The tests are easy though and I love Professor Coleman, so it was a good class.
Very nice guy and he tries to make it easy to skip class since it's at 8 am by uploading slides and audio for every lecture. That's the good part. The bad part is that your grade is based exclusively on five tests (the cumulative final can replace one of these). For me personally, I found his tests extremely hard and never felt prepared.
Prof. Coleman is the best professor I've encountered at W&M so far. He genuinely cares about his students and their personal lives, and he runs his class in a very comfortable way. Lots of in-class discussion and reading outside of class, but the books are super interesting. Highly recommend this class to anyone and everyone!
Dr. Coleman is very knowledgable about biochemistry and you'll end up learning a ton in the class. His grading scale is a little convoluted and there is essentially no curve, but overall I deem the grading fair. His templates for lectures are boring, but if you supplement the lectures with the book readings, then it makes it more bearable.
Really great guy, great class. I'd take Neurochemistry again in a heartbeat if I could.
Biochemistry was made enjoyable by Prof Coleman and he is probaby one of my favorite professors at W&M. I took the online summer course and found the material to be straightforward even though I was nervous about organic being integrated. I felt prepared for tests as long as you follow the objectives. I don't think the text is needed.
Coleman is a great professor. His lectures are interesting enough, he knows a lot about the material, and he is invested in the success of his students. Posts all materials online, so it's okay to miss class. It can be hard to follow lectures if you don't print the notes beforehand. Grade is entirely based on tests which he does not tend to curve.
Professor Coleman is definitely my favorite professor so far. His class is so engaging and he is very friendly. There are nightly readings and some writing assignments, but the material is always interesting. So glad I took this class.
Professor Coleman is by far my favorite professor I have had at W&M. He is so passionate about this class. He also cares for students as people which is amazing. I was so excited to come to class every day to learn more and discuss topics with the class. If you have the chance to take CHEM 150 I would definitely take it!
Prof Coleman truly has a heart of gold. One of the sweetest professors I've had. Assigns a good amount of readings but they're really interesting and you can get an easy A without actually reading most of the assigned readings, you just have to find one point you like in them and know that part well for discussions. Recommend for easy COLL150.
I've taken all of the intro bio courses, and genchem 12 and orgo 1/2 and I did okay. Most of them were curved - I'm not GREAT at them. This class was my favorite science class that I've ever taken. I loved that it wasn't the specific stuff that you needed for intro bio. Also Randy is a 10/10 who does give 1 EC lecture (moves you up a letter), so go
Professor Coleman is a fantastic professor. His lectures are interesting and he uploads recordings/notes. Help sessions are super helpful if you can go, but hes very friendly, caring, and supportive, making sure students are comfortable with the material and always open to help them if not. Definitely one of my favorite professors here at W&M!!
Coleman is a great professor. I took the online 5-week summer course and I would recommend it. It is definitely a lot of work, but worth it. You watch the lectures at your own pace and take an exam every Friday. He also drops one exam, which is nice. I did not really use the textbook at all.
I took the summer session of Biochem and I would recommend it to anyone! Coleman was more than fair with the grading scale and his lectures were engaging. It's a lot of information but is not overwhelming. Coleman is very clear about what will be on tests and helpful in review sessions. The textbook is not needed.
Highly recommend!GREAT C150 course. Professor Coleman is the absolute best and the sweetest, the class mainly consists of discussions, be ready to participate. He eases you into the readings so it doesnt hit you all at once. Main assignments are papers, but they start out short. Honestly easy A if you do your work.
I took Biochemistry Fall 2020 during the pandemic. The class was remote asynchronous (RA). The course was structured into 5 units with multiple short quizzes and a test at the end of each unit. Biochemistry is very dense but if you study hard and go to office hours you'll be fine. Lowest test score is dropped so that was nice.
Coleman was the absolute best! He gave excellent feedback. He really cared about the wellbeing of every student in his class. He was always available via email. Even though we were RA, he went the extra mile to get to know us all. We discussed the readings during every class. We were required to make discussion points so that class waas smoothly.
Professor Coleman is an excellent professor. His lectures are very organized, and it was very clear what we needed to know for exams. He gave a set of "objectives" for each chapter in the course. If you knew the objectives, you're going to do well on the exams. I only put a 4 for difficulty because Biochem isn't a joke.
I honestly don't get the hype for Dr. Coleman. His notes templates aren't helpful and its honestly hard to follow him during class. It also wouldn't hurt to have video recording of the lectures instead of audio recordings. His tests were pretty easy and his grading scale is kinda nice tho but he's a mediocre teacher at best.
Dr. Coleman is probably the best choice for biochem, he's really good at teaching the material in my opinion. His tests are fair and the grading scale is generous! However, I really hope he makes changes to the templates since they leave out important info and it would nice to have screen recordings of the lecture instead of just audio.
Prof. Coleman is a wonderful person, and I feel lucky that I was able to take this class. He leads the class well and has structured this course in an organized way. I always felt like I could participate in discussions about the readings even though I am not a science person. It was a really fulfilling experience overall.
I highly recommend taking prof coleman's chemistry of emotion class as a COLL 150! He gave me 100% on all my papers if I completed them on time and he is super caring and accomodating if you're struggling. There is not a lot of work to do in class so you can pretty much chill, just come prepared with discussion points from the readings.
Professor Coleman was one of the best biology professors I have had at the College. His lectures are understandable, informative, and lay out the information in a very clear manner. The exams are difficult, but if you study VERY hard you can do well. I feel like this course has prepared me well for the MCAT and med school afterward.
I really enjoyed my time with prof. Coleman and highly recommend taking a class of his. He's very sweet and understanding and is a very generous grader. I noticed he tends to be very generous to those who showed up to class and participated most of the time, so keep that in mind. Lots of reading, but most of it not necessary (I didnt read)
Dr. Coleman is very helpful and his lectures are interesting. He records lectures, so attendance is not mandatory. A lot of the material is very memorization-based and dense, but his objectives and practice exams are very helpful. You have to work very hard to excel in the class. He included extra credit quizzes this Fall 2022 semester.
Biochem is insanely hard but Coleman is such an amazing professor. He's clear on what he wants us to know, and the actual exams are VERY similar to the practice ones he has on blackboard and the 'quizzes' he has. He lectures at a good speed and lectures are recorded so you don't have to go to class unless there's an exam or you're picking up one.
Prof Coleman is probably one of the best professors I've ever had. Biochemistry is not an easy subject, but he is very clear in what he wants and really cares about his students doing well. I wish him the best in his retirement as it was a pleasure to be in one of his classes!
This man is an absolute gem of a professor. He was incredibly kind and caring for each and every student. He made an 8am class something to really look forward to and he always made me feel valued and like my participation was important and he truly listened. Happy retirement Professor Coleman!
Biochem with Professor Coleman is no easy task, but his clear lectures, practice materials, and supportive approach make the challenge manageable. Using Unstuck AI in addition to the course resources helped me stay on top of the dense content. Overall, a great class!
