Prof. hagerty is one of the best teachers i have had at truman. He challenges you but helps immensely and I was still able to get an A even though gov. isnt my best subject. It takes a lot of studying but he is an awesome teacher.
he makes the information fun to learn. He is hard but you will come away having learned a lot and having a good time while you were at it.
A difficult teacher who works students hard, but every student will get the grade he/she deserves. The lectures may go from the beginning of class until the very end, but at least they're interesting.
Easily the most entertaining class I've ever had. I never got above a B on the papers until the last one. The test questions from the book I thought were the most difficult part of the tests. Study as you go and you'll have no problem, but it is possible to study the night before and get an A.
how can one base an entire grade on one test??? there was an insane amount of material and the entire grade was based on one test...terrible
Very nice guy. He is a character and makes early morning class easier to get through. Very knowledgeable about subject and uses a lot of analogous references to help make the subject easier to digest. Involves a lot of outside studying for a 1 hr. class though.
Lectures were fascinating and entertaining--VERY funny and insightful-- but our only test is a killer! He does discount the midterm, so that's good, but the final is hell. If you go to his office and talk to him about it he might give you a pity letter grade or two.
Lectures were interesting and occasionally funny. The final is hard though. Always go to class and any study sessions you can. Study a lot, and go to class, and it's not that bad.
He was a great teacher. He made the class fun and interesting, even though some of the topics were very boring. I loved his lectures and am taking his one-hour class next semester because he is THAT good of a teacher.
Hagerty is an excellent professor; his lectures are clear and frequently funny, but the class is definitely not for the faint of heart. His tests are grueling; his papers, while short, are a bear; and you need to work your butt off to do well. If you want to learn a lot and don't mind a good challenge, I recommend him heartily.
IF you even have any interest in politics this man will interest you. It was a fun class and the man is an amazing lecturer. He is very difficult on tests and especially papers but if you just work you will get the grade you want/ and or deserve.
His lectures are very entertaining. It would benefit you to attend EVERY class and EVERY study session. His tests are rather difficult and your grade is based on 2 tests (midterm and a final). Study, study, study, and hopefully you'll come out of it okay.
It's true that in policy you'll have to write a forever long paper, but he really guides you through it, and by the time you're done, you will have something to truly be proud of.
I loved this class. Dr. Hagerty is by far my favorite professor on campus this semester. I ould def. take any class that he teaches and tell all of my friends to also! I might even have to pick up a minor in Poli Sci just to have more of his classes!
Doc. Hagerty is a superb lecturer, however, if you are not prepared, his papers and tests will KILL you. He does respect hard work, though and will recognize an effort.
I was prepared to sleep through this class, but Hagerty was the only professor who coule keep me awake and get me an A in a government class. An awesome Prof. Take him!
Awesome teacher... I thought there were no good ones at this school, but he changed my mind. Very passionate about his subject and if you study before the tests, you'll be okay. I got an A, so it's not impossible.
I dreaded taking this class, but Prof. Hagerty was such an excellent lecturer that I looked forward to going. Just be sure to study for his tests.
I thought the class was going to be super boring but Hagerty actually made the lectures bearable. Just make sure the study for the test. I got a B on the midterm and an A on the final. He dropped my midterm grade since I did better on the final. That was pretty sweet!
Hagerty looks like he will be such a boring teacher the first day that you walk in the room and then he begins to talk and you know that the class is going to be cool. I really liked him as a teacher even though it was only a block class.
One of the most amazing lecturers I have ever experienced. This class was really enjoyable. However it isn't easy, A's only go to the ones that really deserve them, not much work outside of class though. Highly recommend
For a 100-level course, it's incredibly hard. Your grade is determined only by two tests, which enforce pure memorization, not concepts. Class is mandatory because if you miss a day of class, you've missed too much material that will be on the test. That being said, he's very charismatic and fun in class. The two tests just suck a lot.
Great class and teacher. Interesting and informative. Tells you exactly what's on the midterm and test. All you have to do is study. He'll even throw out the midterm if you do better on the final.
Dr. Hagerty has a knowledge of government like no other! His lectures are hilarious and very interesting (despite them being about government). The class is very hard because it thrives only on 2 tests, a comprehensive final, and 4-5 papers. In the end, however, I'm definitely glad I took this WE class.
Very funny guy, interesting speaker. Only two grades: midterm and final, but drops midterm if better on final. Dont actually have to read book chapters he assigns, just know their vocab for the test. Test not too bad, only need to know what is on the study guide.
The only prof that could ever get me interested in government.
Hagerty is a fantastic teacher. The lectures are hilarious and you can walk away from the class each day fully understanding the material. He actively involves you in the class and keeps you interested. The tests are a beast! Best is to study in a group (more minds) and DO the reading!!! Definitely take his class.
HilARIOUS. Can get anyone interested in political science. It is definitely beneficial to study his tests from previous semesters. The only two grades come from the midterm and the final. However, if your final grade is higher than your midterm grade, he just drops the midterm grade (instead of averaging the 2).
Dr. Hagerty is an AMAZING professor. He knows the material really well, so his lectures are thorough and easy to understand. His tests are a little hard, but if you have any trouble with anything in the class, you can go talk to him, and he's extremely helpful.
He finds a way to make learing a million different models about the policy making process all fun. The paper is one of the biggest projects you'll do here at Truman, but he leads you through the process so it is do-able. He's one of the best teachers on campus in my opinion... and I almost forgot to mention that he is hilarious. Take him.
Go to every class! Take really good notes and make notecards for the vocab in the readings early and study them once a week. It sounds stupid but his tests are very difficult because there is such a broad range of topics. STUDY FOR THOSE EXAMS!
Great class. Study for the exams like crazy because you only really get one shot for a good grade. Don't stress if you mess up on the midterm because he will take your final grade and trash your midterm if you do better on the latter. If you miss class, make sure you get notes from someone. You definately won't fall asleep during this course!
Hagerty is great. It is a lot of material for a first block class, but he makes it interesting and exciting. Definitely take him if you have the chance. He is SO funny. Attendence is not required, but helpful. I rarely went to class but I already took the class in high school. If you don't know basic government information, you will have to try.
Dr. Hagerty is awesome. He knows what he's talking about and he's hilarious. You don't use the textbook a lot. Only to study for the test and even then, you only need to know the key terms. The tests are a beast and he gives weekly papers, but he's an excellent teacher. I can't wait to take him again for my upper level Poli Sci classes.
I've always hated government, but he made it really fun and exciting. Notes are in outline form, making it very easy to study for tests, which are a little difficult. But if you study, you're golden. Overall, a great professor.
he knows it all. he's one of the best lecturers i've ever met, and his little jokes make class enjoying. i don't think i'll ever live up to his paper standards, though. also, be THOROUGH on his tests- they're killers.
This guy is hilarious! I loved attending class... i crammed for my final and aced it as well as the class.
I love prof Hagerty!!! go to class and take notes! U will use your own notes more than any other material...at least that worked for me. He makes everything interesting and his was one of the only classes that i never wanted to miss a day of.
Easy class, interesting guy, DO NOT BUY THE BOOK- it is a waste and the bookstore will not buy it back.
Robert Hagerity is one of the funniest professors I have ever had. He keeps you interested in the lectures (Which he usually lets you out early for) by joking and telling amusing stories. His tests are straightforward, mainly lecture based, that you definately have to study for!!!
Hagerty is a great professor. In his upper level classes he expects you to know the material. GO TO CLASS. He covers a lot of material in a lecture and you need it for the exams. Exams are tough and the paper is insane but he is very helpful and makes it enjoyable. The man can lecture like non-other and that really helps keep you interested.
Great Teacher. His lectures are really interesting. I hate government but he made it interesting. Make you know the terms. Reading the textbook isn't completely necessary but you need to know the terms from the book.
Hagerty is a fantastic and helpful professor. This class is really interesting and you will learn a lot. Take good notes though and be prepared to analyze and give specific examples on the test. I highly recommend this class. His lectures are interesting and engaging!
Hagerty is hilarious, and gives great examples in class to understand the material. He has a definite passion for what he teaches....this class made me actually LIKE the U.S. Constitution.
I loathe history and government. Dr. Hagerty showed me how to enjoy it. You have to go to class, otherwise you will, without a doubt, do poorly on the midterm and final. He's funny and great to listen to, and you can tell he's a really nice guy. His lecture about the 7th amendment still cracks me up. I'd recommend this class.
Took Pub Policy. Excellent lecturer. Very difficult grader on tests so include lots of detail and analysis. Somewhat difficult grader on the papers. Include lots of details in short papers. Include lots of analysis of pol models 4 final paper. Unclear expectations about papers. Clear expectations about tests. Overall good teacher.
Such a nice teacher! Very interesting also. Easy class just memorize names of people talked about in class.
Dr. Hagerty is an incredibly good and engaging lecturer. I was never bored in his classes, and he has a great sense of humor. He often told lengthy--but entertaining--"what if" stories to support a point. He really knows his material, and gives you everything you need to pass. Go to class, the notes are vital for testing, and memorize the material.
This was probably one of the most intensive classes I've ever taken. The paper is ridiculous, and I almost dropped the class. This class took a toll on my physical and psychological health, but I somehow pulled out an A. That said, he is a great professor, and if you're not too worried about getting A's it should be fine.
The man knows his stuff, and by the end so will you. Politics/History can be a very dry subject sometimes but with Dr.Hagerty at the podium, it becomes a fascinating subject. He does an amazing job keeping lectures engaging and stimulating. His enthusiasm is infectious, so much so that you almost wish the class didn't have to end.
Despite what others have said, and the boring class, I found him to be very funny.
Took the dreaded Public Policy class w him. Lectures are almost poetic. Excellent grasp of diction, language and communication. Hard grader on tests and assignments. For tests study a few things in depth rather than everything. For papers provide alot of detail. Very engaging and funny. Can be intimidating but don't be afraid. Study ur ass off!
I definitely recommend going to class, reading the textbook, and doing the Missouri worksheet. If you've done those, you'll pass. He's a good guy and tells hilarious stories. Very interesting class for a history lesson.
I received a freaking D in his class! He is really interesting and keeps a history class not be a snooze however...for a 1 credit class...it's TOO much. I studied my ASS off for his final, yet I got a D in the class. Word of advice TAKE THE ONLINE CLASS - it's a lot easier and open note everything from what I've heard.
Dr. Hagerty is one of the best professors at Truman. He's funny, engaging, and personable. He gave us a lot to study for such a low level statue req. class, but at least it was straightforward what we had to know. Loved all of his lectures and I sat in the middle of the front row in a large hall because that's how nerdy I got about his lectures.
Lectures are so boring. Way too much work for a 1 credit class. Only 2 things are graded - the midterm and the final. You have to study your ass off just to pass. Take this course online or another course!!
This guy was absolutely great for the Missouri Statute class. Lectures were always entertaining due to his creativity and love for the subject matter. I don't understand the previous comments that say his tests were too hard. They were a cake walk if you studied. Definetely take him, it's worth it. You will never be bored and will want to attend
Amazing professor, very entertaining lectures. His tests are easy if you study enough, and he tells you exactly what will be on them.
Going into this class I had no interest whatsoever in the subject, but Hagerty made the class really entertaining. He tells you exactly what to study and how to get a good grade. As long as you read and follow his study guides, the class is simple. I would definitely recommend him.
Dr. Hagerty is extremely entertaining in lectures. If you study for his tests, they aren't too bad. He will give you a study guide that tells you exactly what you need to study. Reading the book is not necessarily required, but it is recommended to at least skim it and definitely look over the terms in the margins.
His lecture is interesting, and he's funny, but the tests are killers. 25% each and he doesn't give full credit for a good answer. You must always give a notable example of how the term is used to get full credit. Told the class to read several chapters and ended up never test on it. Just go for credit no credit option with this class.
It's much easier to take notes from someone who took it. You will know what to study. His lectures are interesting but compared to the difficulty of the tests, they're not worth it. He told the class to read the book and ended up testing random terms. Some are not even on the study guide. Not very different from BIO 107/108
I had no interest in political science, but luckily Hagerty makes this dry subject interesting with his hilarious lectures. Make sure you fill out the study guide and learn the vocab in the chapters he assigns. There's a lot of info to learn for his tests, but they're not horribly difficult if you study hard enough.
Professor Hagerty definitely understands that POL 101 is just a requirement for most students. He clearly explains what will be on exams, and assigns no homework. He keeps lectures interesting and often lets out early. If you pay attention and study the basics, it's an easy A.
Does anybody NOT love Hagerty? He's a great speaker and I always enjoyed class. Study for the tests and it'll be a good experience; I left with more interest in government than I came in with.
Professor is very clear and makes this class as interesting as he can. He understands many students are taking this because they have to. Tests are simple enough if you take the time to study and he is willing to help you with material you don't understand outside of class.
I took this class for a block and loved it. He makes class interesting. If you pay attention during lectures and do the study guides, you'll get an A on the tests. He tells you exactly what you need to know.
Hagerty is a really good teacher. He is very funny and interesting and make all the lectures fun to attend. The test however were very difficult and I could not get a good grade. I heard taking it online is much easier and open notes, I would recommend it unless you're really good at government.
He is a very good professor. I loved government, and he made it even more fun and interesting. He loves the material he teaches, and it shows. If you take him READ THE VOCAB IN THE BOOK. it is on every test. He wasn't overly easy, but I would recommend taking him.
honestly if i were you i would not take him especially if its for the american statue requirement I'm WARNING YOU NOW TAKE IT ONLINE! the constitution test are easy but then he gives you 3 more test which are mainly essay i have straight A's in all my other classes and i have yet to get higher than a C in his class on anything!! but consti test -_-
His lectures are interesting enough with jokes that he makes. He only offers two grades, midterm test and final. However, if you do terrible on the midterm and better on the final, he drops your midterm grade altogether and takes only your final test grade as your course grade.
The only two grades that are counted in the class are the midterm and final. If you do well on the final and not so well on the midterm, he drops the midterm and counts your final as your final grade. Lectures are really boring, but sometimes he tells funny stories or makes up funny examples.
He was a lot of fun
I took this class for a half semester to fulfill the Missouri Statue requirement and it wasn't that bad! Hagerty made the material interesting enough and his lectures were actually pretty funny. Study for the tests- its pure memorization and he lets you know what to memorize.
Randy is very smart and very funny. This 1 credit class was clearly nobody's priority, so he made it simple, relaxed, but still interesting. 2 tests total. Read, do the study guides, be confident with those, and you're good to go. For the final, he offered extra credit and threw out bad midterm grades. Don't sweat it! And there's no real homework!
Hagerty is a great professor for a required class. He understands that most students don't care about the material and are only there for the credit. His lectures are entertaining and concepts are explained very simply. Only a midterm and final, but you will need to study for them. Overall, he's the best professor I could have had for this course.
Hagerty was a pleasure for the Missouri Statute class. He is probably the most engaging lecturer I have had while at Truman. The class is pretty straightforward; if you study, will get the grade you want.
Many students will tell you to not take Public Policy with Dr. Hagerty because of how hard it is or that you will no get an A. Trust me, it is by no means an easy class, but I do not regret taking this class from him. His lectures were engaging and the readings were thought-provoking. The paper is tough but not if you put the work in early
A surprising amount of studying for a 1 credit class. Fill out the MO Constitution packet and the study guides and memorize them a few days before the test(s), and make a quizlet for ALL the book terms! Hagerty is an enthralling lecturer for sure. However, it's a bit nervewracking when your entire grade rests on the final (he drops the midterm)
I put in almost no effort and received a B. He is a great lecturer who knows his material. He is the department chair but I wish he would teach more upper level classes since this was the only class I was able to take with him.
Very interesting lectures, though I never seemed to learn anything when I went. Hard to take notes because he's kind of all over the place, but he is far from boring. The only grades in the class are the midterm and final, but he usually drops the lower of your 2 scores. Definitely study for hours before the tests because it determines your grade.
Lectures are presented on Powerpoint so it's easy to copy down and follow along, memorize the slides to get good grades. Doing and memorizing the study guides + a few pages of notes + vocab will earn you an A. You only need the textbook for vocab, so borrow a friends book and take pictures of instead of buying the book. Randy is also a funny dude.
Amazing lecturer. Grade is based on midterm and final. Lots of memorization required. Book only for vocab you have to learn on your own, have to memorize a MO Constitution packet too. Its hard but enjoyable.
You'll show up just for his hilarious monologues.
He is a funny little man. For a dry subject, he made the best out of it. Only 2 tests. Midterm and the final. Heads up, the only grade that matters is the Final. He drops midterm. The class is very high stakes as you can only miss a couple of questions before dropping down to a B on the final. For a one credit class, I ended up studying ALOT! Scary
Taking the class online is definitely the easier option, but given the choice, I'd take Hagerty again. He's hilarious and definitely makes a normally bland class about as fun as it can be.
Dr. Hagerty is very entertaining and funny, although he has a tendency to play videos instead of lecture. The class is graded solely by tests and a book review. If you're expecting to learn all about the environment in environmental politics, think again. You'll learn more about the departments of the cabinet and environmental agencies instead.
Hagerty is a great choice if you have the knowledge about government. Hes hilarious and you wont regret going to class. However, I knew very little about government and didnt do so hot in the class. I would strongly recommend taking it online. He does drop your midterm if you do better on the final than you did on the midterm, so that good.
He is such a nice professor, offered extra tutorial if needed, willing to help and always being so kind. Tons to memorize in this class, it was a hard class which only grade the midterm and final. Try to remember everything before final, he will surprise you.
Barely puts anything in the grade book. Grades are based off of three exams and a paper. Show up or dont attitude.
He let us have our exams take home because of Covid. You're only graded on 4 things: 2 midterms, the final, and a 5+ page paper, so show up to lectures and start your paper early. I was also kind of close to an A at the end of the semester so he just rounded me without me asking or anything. I never opened the textbook.
concept ID style tests, the most important part for him is displaying your full understanding of the terms and their significance. If you are taking a higher-level course from him, make sure to take notes on what he says in addition to the slides. He talks fast so digital notes are recommended. Super funny, you will always be entertained.
Hagerty was great! This was a new class he was teaching, so the lectures were a little bit unfocused, but otherwise, it was a relatively easy class.
Graded on 3 exams (just lots of essays, he let us have 2 of them as take home exams but I wouldn't bank on that), and one paper/book review (5 pages, be sure to choose a good book). He wants you to have a deeper understanding of the terms, their significance, their application, etc. which makes the class really hard if u don't like writing essays.
He is the worst teachers I ever had.
Graded on 3 exams with about an essay 4 each term. He let us take all them home but does not grade them easily (Which is fair enough). As someone who really hates to write & was happy to leave English this felt like an English course. His lectures are relaxed & doesn't just read off the slides. He is a hard grader but his critics were valid.
Dr. Hagerty is a funny guy and he gives interesting lectures. POL 262 was a low-commitment class most people take for gen ed. Your grade was completely based on 4 take-home exams and a 5-page book review. The exams are just defining 10 terms, but write at least 300 words for each definition if you want an A. You don't really need the textbook.
Lecture heavy but very entertaining. Only graded on four exams and a final and graded fairly harshly. The exams and finals are just defining ten terms and are usually take-home exams. You should be fine as long as your write about a page for each term. Tends to ramble but is really great and very understanding.
Prof. Hagerty's POL161 is engaging but challenging. Graded mainly on exams and essays, with valid critiques. Useful digital notes and unstuck AI help prep for the workload.
