He saved my testimony!
Okay, here's the thing. He make you do 15 terms each week. Each one should take 20 mins. to write. Complete waste of my time. Learned nothing. Just busy work. Plus, it totally killed my Fridays. But Hayes is really funny, and makes things easy to get
Brother Hayes is such an awesome teacher. He knows how to relate to his students and his attitude is always positive. Being in his class makes me want to learn more about the gospel, just to compete with him!
Great teacher that is down to earth and doesn't pretend to be perfect. Doesn't preach but makes you want to be a better person. I would highly recommend Brother Hayes because of his sense of humor and ability to interest student and bring the spirit into class.
The best teacher
He is a great teacher with tons of enthusiasm for the Gospel.
I love this teacher. I took hime twice. Not difficult and still I learned a lot.
One of the funniest and most entertaining teachers in the Burg. Come to class ready to participate to get the most out of it. He kinda reminds me of Nick Nolte, and sometimes it seemed that out of his zeal for the subject material he was just going to start yelling at us to repent and to do more missionary work, but he would probably get fired
If I could major in Brother Hayes, I would. He's the most amazing teacher I've ever had. He'll be back Fall semester. Yay!
THE BEST TEACHER IN THE WHOLE ENTIRE WORLD. YOU BECOME SO ENGROSSED IN WHAT HE IS SAYING YOU DONT EVEN WANT TO BELL TO RING. HE IS HALARIOUS AND HE KNOWS THE MATERIAL SO GOOD, YOU SERIOUSLY DONT WANT TO LEAVE THE CLASS. HE WILL BE BACK TEACHING FALL OF 2006. THE BEST ADVICE YOU COULD EVER GET FROM ANYONE WOULD BE TO TAKE THIS CLASS.
OH MY GOODNESS!!!!!!! The best teacher I have ever had. He makes learning the most amazing thing in the world! TAKE HIM!!! I cant even remember if the class was hard. It didn't matter. You just loved to be there. I absolutley loved it!
Bro. Hayes is the best teacher that I have ever had. He is utterly amazing. I look forward to going to class everyday. I am learning so much and I have never been so engrossed in the scriptures. He is my hero - no lie! I love him and I am taking all of my religion classes from him. I schedule around him!
Best religion professor on campus. You will get an A if you do your writing assignments - the assignments are time consuming but not hard. No tests. He has a very real perspective on religion. His knowledge is amazing. Awesome class!
Bro. Hayes is a great teacher. He has a real zeal for his subject. He understands that scriptures well. From him I learned to understand some vague/confusing doctrines. One caution: Each week you are required to turn in "terms", which are basically summaries of your reading/discussions. They are fairly long and take some time. DON'T FORGET TO DO IT
He is absolutely amazing, has great knowledge, is VERY open-minded, and knows how to relate everything to Christ and things that matter in our daily lives. However, there was a LOT of writing (11 3.3 page papers single-spaced), and I fell behind.
Brother Hayes was a terrific teacher. I loved his class and his teaching style ... however, there are a few reservations I had by the end of the semester. Most importantly, he doesn't abide by a strict reading schedule, which meant that at the end of my Book of Mormon 121 class we hadn't made it anywhere near Alma. But, on the whole, a great guy.
Great class...he's kind of all over the place. But I learned a lot.
Hayes will change your life. He's so good at what he does. I hope I can teach half as well as he does when I'm in the real world.
Brother hayes is a lot of fun and what he is teaches is really indepth and really interesting he makes you teach a topic to your group which is really cool. I really liked his class it was awesome I am going to try to take him for another religion class. He is awesome.
Once you get in the rhythm of writing the journal entries, this is a pretty good class. He has elaborates on the context of the scriptures very well. You get a lot of historical, and political context. He is a very entertaining teacher; never a dull moment in his class. Overall, one of the best teachers that I have had.
This class was great!!! He has a lot of compassion and really remembers what it's like to be a college student-he can relate to his students because he loves us and knows what we have on our mind. Keep up with the terms writing and you will get an A. I got and A- and felt like I didn't deserve it because it's such a great, easy class.
Awesome teacher, very upbeat and make subject understandable and interesting
Bro. Hayes is awesome. Seriously.
Very energetic teacher, makes sense of the subject.
Bro. Hayes is a great teacher who knows so much about the gospel. Everytime I went to class I came out knowing something knew. Loved every second of his class. He is hilarious and really good at making the class interesting. You can actually understand the scriptures with him as a teacher. TAKE HIM. YOU WONT REGRET IT.
An awesome and energetic teacher. Gets the point across very clearly.
Best Religion teacher on campus. He loves the gospel and he loves his students. Great personality, fun to attend his class, take him.
Great teacher! He really loves the gospel! I don't like writing papers though, and so this was not the class for me. I found it really hard to write single spaced papers every single day for class! He is a great guy though and fairly interesting. He also goes into a lot of geographical detail, which is good if you like that. He is also helpful!
This is probably the most amazing religion teacher on campus. He's funny, blunt, and speaks the gospel in a way that anyone can understand. His papers aren't really that bad, but its good because there aren't any tests or quizzes.
I really enjoyed Bro Hayes. He has such energy and love for his subject. You can ask him anything! He cares about his students, and does what he can to help you when you need it. Lots of homework, but you can get ahead with it, if you try. He makes you care about your history, will definitely take another class from him.
This guy is awsome. Iv taken this and fam. history, he has a good sence of humor and teaches with the spirit. He isnt a boring teacher, especialy for "R.M's"
I loved Brother Hayes' class. He tells the history behind the old testament so that you can even understand Isaiah when reading it. He is funny and really relaxed. He makes learning Old Testament so interesting.
Bro. Hayes is sharp. He knows his stuff and his confident and is really good at making sure everyone is on the same page. Funny too. Take this guy.
Bro. Hayes is AMAZING. Like others have said, he knows his stuff. He also has a great love for the Gospel and the scriptures, and this, coupled with his knowledge of what he teaches, makes for a wonderful classroom experience. I eagerly looked forward to each class with him. He makes things fun, but is serious he should be. TAKE FROM BRO. HAYES!
I am taking REL 121 and 302 from him this semester. Bro. Hayes knows the scriptures and has the energy to get anyone willing to learn even a little, excited about whats being taught. Class was fun and informative where you can ask any question easily. Only requirement is showing up for class writing some notes on the back of a "quiz" due each day.
Brother Hayes is a way fun teacher! He makes class very entertaining and really knows his scriptures. We didn't have any tests or finals just a homework assignment due everyday, but it was super easy and quick! I loved his class and would recommend that EVERYONE take a class from him!!
He is seriously the greastest religion teacher on campus! I plan on taking a class with him at least once a year because I learned so much from his insight! He really truely cares about the kids and wants us to learn all we can and wants us to be in the scriptures. No tests, just work on specific scriptures. He's incredible!
I took family history from him and he is amazing! I thought the class was going to be really hard from the beginning, but it turned out to be really easy and a blast! I learned so much and loved listening to him get exctied about stories we found about our ancestors. Overall great teacher!!
Brother Hayes is a great teacher. He knows his stuff. The work load is pretty fair. Just go to class and do your homework and you'll get an A.
I worked my butt off and could only get a B. He tells you at the END of the year that if you were late or tardy ONE time, or missed ONE assignment, or got lower than an 85% on ONE homework assignment you CANT get an A. By then there was nothing i could do about it. I got straight A's... and his B. It ruined my GPA.
Don't expect to be in control of your grade! AMAZING teacher in class. Tons of busy work. Very forgetful about things important to your grade.
Brother Hayes is a fantastic teacher. I would recommend to anyone. His homework can be a little monotonous. But is easy
I had him for old testiment and he is awesome. He knows his stuff really well, he is loud, funny, and a really good teacher. If you read and participate in class its an easy A. Its very clear what he wants you to do, just read the syllubus
I thought I was doing good the entire semester and then at the end he told me there was no possible way I could get an A because I hadn't participated at all. I talked everyday in class!!! Unless you are a loud mouth don't take him because he grades tons on participation
No tests or quizzes, only a paper due every class period. It took me a long time to get used to his teaching style which wasn't focused as much on the spiritual side as I would've liked. Make sure you talk in class every day because if you don't he WILL give you a B. Even if you got A's on every paper you turned in.
His teaching style is different, nice guy but biased. If he likes you youll get an A and you HAVE to talk in class. Grades are unexpected because its in his eyes not work ethic results. I attened all my classes and turned in two late assinmnets because i had swine flu and i recieved a C. He is a good person, but overall i would say a biased teacher
Brother Hayes is a great teacher, but he requires a lot of work from his students. Even though his classes are time consuming they're so enjoyable that I would take one again.
He was so much fun. The homework was time consuming, but I felt like I felt like I learned more in his class than any religion class that I have been in. If you don't mind the work, and really want to learn a lot, I highly suggest this teacher.
If you are shy with raising your hand in class then I wouldn't take it. You wouldn't get higher than a B+ even if you did all the work and did the best you could and even wrote notes on the back of your homework like he tells you to do. He doesn't understand that some people are need to learn to participate in Gospel discussions on their own time.
Brother Hayes is one of the best religion teachers that I have ever had. He has been teaching here for a long time and really knows his stuff. He requires a lot of work, but you really have to do the reading in order to understand what's going on in the bible. It's so worth it. Participation is required so he knows you're involved. Great teacher.
I took a class from him two years ago then another more recently. He was very amiable and helpful the first time I took his class. The second time I took his class I was surprised with the grade I got. When I approached him about it he got upset. I had done all the work perfectly and had perfect attendance apparently I didn't talk enough in class.
I took bro. Hayes and I never missed a class and did all my assigments and I still got a B+. That really annoyed me and it was just because I didn't talk enough in his class.
Bro. Hayes is a very insightful teacher. I learned so much from him! He has a world of knowledge that he's just waiting to share with you. I highly recommend him. I didn't participate a lot, but still got a good grade.
I really enjoyed his class. His teaching is very good, and his knowledge of the course material is even better. Be prepared for class every day and have insiteful comments and remember to write them down on the back of your reading homework and you will get an A. If your quiet and dont like to participate, you will not get an A.
Super insiteful! Does not assign busy work. Very knowledgeable and has an abnormal viewpoint. Love Him!
Brother Hayes is great! One paper due each class period and no tests. He knows the material very well and makes expectations clear. Highly recommended! But be sure to write good papers and talk a lot in class or you have no chance of getting an A!
His grading isn't reliable it does not stay the same at all and doesn't make any sense. You have to participate in class but it's really hard to because he just talks and talks and talks. He thinks he's super funny and he's not I guess if you're a typical mormon you'll just crack up though. Seriously not worth your time if you wanna learn about BOM
Brother Hayes bases his class set up on his opinion that everyone is a C student. His grading policy is very flawed. If you try to talk to him he will be extremely rude and unhelpful. He cannot admit any fault. I would not feel comfortable going to him with any question because of his bad temper. Don't take if you care about getting an A.
The worst teacher I have ever had here at BYU-I.You have to read a book a week, which includes at least 200 pages and 4 hours of reading! I would have dropped the class if I could, but it was the only religion class that would fit my schedule!! Do not take a class from him if you want an A in your religion classes!!
Really great teacher! There were no tests, but his weekly assignments (I took it once a week for 3 hours) were very in depth and challenging. He wants you to speak up and talk about what you learned in your own personal study. He really knows his stuff and helped me figure out all the history and order of the first part of the Book of Mormon.
If he likes you, you'll get a good grade, simply because he has no grading style, there is no way to understand why you got a good grade or not because he has no way of justifying it, worst teacher ever and I do plan on reporting him, even though it will do no good!
TERRIBLE TEACHER! Do not take him if you don't have to. His grading is so confusing, it doesn't make any sense, and doesn't follow a consistent pattern. He doesn't listen to you and he's impossible to talk to. He gives out As to the students that he likes. He wants you to participate (your grade depends on it) then he's rude when you do.
He's a great guy to be honest, but I don't like the way he grades our assignments, I get a B+ on every paper I turn in regardless of how much work I put into it. It's really hard to get an A in his class. He really knows the gospels, but his grading system isn't too great. He also never replies to emails.
DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!! He doesn't grade well and the assignments take 3-4 hours to complete each week. The best you can get every week is basically a 89%! Not a good professor at all. The class is really long and boring too!! Look for another teacher!
I Had Bro Hayes for 5 classes, his homework changed over the years, but he is real, and does a great job bringing history to the present. If you want an A you do have to time into it. And He purposely grades harder at the beginning than at the end so you feel accomplished. He is one of my favorite professors of all time. And he will make you laugh
Really humble guy. Probably the most honest religion teacher I've had. Great insights. As to the bad ratings- seriously? Go take a religion course at BYU Provo if you want to complain about grades. Attend class, participate, do your homework, stop whining and you'll get an A.
Brother Hayes is fun, exciting, never a boring moment.... Homework takes work but you learn lots. No test just harder Homework, this teacher helps you understand the gospel in a fun way. Love him........
I learned so much in this class! There's no test and quizzes but be prepared for some intense homework through the week. You have to spend four hours on each assignment but I felt like even though it was hard, it helped me gain a much better understanding of the Old Testament. His lectures are clear and explain what you read for the week.
Brother Hayes was so awesome!! I took BOM from him nad I learned so much. He is a genius when it comes to the scriptures. Homework does take a good 4 hours, but if you do an hour here & there it isn't so bad and you learn SO much! No tests or quizzes, he is hilarious and can answer any random question you ask. Definitely taking him next semester!!
Old testament: Super hard class and homework. Amazing teacher who knows a lot about everything. Awesome teacher!
I loved Brother Hayes I learned so much more than I thought would! the only negative of the class is that it is so much work! you have the class once a week for 2 hours, and for that class you have to do a min. of 4 hours of homework. the sad things is, there is no way of getting around the homework. It actulally takes 4+ hours! participate!
Great teacher! Homework is a killer. You have to do 4 hours of homework for every class. Class once a week. Student lead discussion for every class. He will give a better grade if you participate. You will learn alot from this class.
Great teacher with really interesting class discussions. The reading is a little steep, but it is worth it because if you come prepared you will come away with so much more than you expected. He's hilarious too btw (not your typical religion teacher either)
This class was really interesting. But the homework is awful.. 4 hours worth each week and he doesn't believe in "A's" so you are pretty much out of luck. I have consistently recieved 89's on all of my assignments.. no tests though. That's a plus.
He is a great teacher, his grading is different but, if you go into his office and talk to him he will help you out. He is a great teacher and loves the Old Testament. I want to take all my classes from him.
Good guy. If you want any easy, doctrinally based class, with minimal time requirements STAY AWAY. To get an 89 you must do 4 hours of reading/analyzing based homework per week and have perfect attendance but if don't do the homework you'll get a hardcore F. Not very structured in class, due to pure tangent following.
He is an amazing teacher! If you prepare for class and participate you will do just find and get an A. He has an amazing in sites into the scriptures. His goal is for you to understand the history and what is going on but not to tell you what it is about. If you want a deeper understanding the scriptures this is the best class to be in!!
If you do not like to talk in class, do not take a class from Brother Hayes because he will not give you an A. The highest grade you can get in this class is a 90, if you do the work the right way and talk in class. Although the class content was interesting at times, I did not like the way he graded us. He's nice, but it's a hard class.
His class is awesome. He teaches in way that you want to keep learning.
Great teacher but he has a terrible grading system. Nearly impossible to get an A.
Brother Hayes i awesome. His voice is like that of a movie narrator. He grades hard through the semester and you will see on Ilearn that you have a B or lower (like other comments have said) but he raises the grades at the end. He just wants you to always be striving to do better. He requires a lot of time studying. I learned a TON!!
Almost impossible to get an A. If you have a good GPA and don't get Bs, don't take this class. He is really interesting but doesn't believe that you can earn a perfect grade. Plus there is a lot of homework.
You come to this class to learn. Your grade is based entirely on that desire to learn. The Holy Ghost, coupled with the sacred text, is your guide here. Forget grades, and don't worry about "wrong or right." For those dunces out there like myself, this class is paradise. You don't need to concern yourself with perfection, only with edification.
Bad teacher. He has no structure to his classes, and the homework doesn't help you learn, you spend your time trying to connect dots that more often or not aren't there. He doesn't believe in perfection, so a 89% is the highest grade he gives out. He teaches more of his opinion that actual doctrine, leading to confusing and contradictory classes.
He is a great teacher. You will learn a lot from his class, but he is also a very tough teacher. If you wish your class to be easy, then don't take his class.
Honestly, if you have above a 3.5 gpa don't bother with his class. All A's on my transcript except for this religion class. He says he believes no man can acheive perfection so he won't ever give above a 90%. What ever happened to the "grace of God" after all we can do? ...but his discussions are really good if you don't care about grades.
He is such an awesome teacher! His homework is very time consuming and challenging. His grading system sucks because to get an A you need to super close to 90% for every assignment. Other than the crazy no grades higher than 90% he is an awesome teacher.
Great professor. I loved all of his classes.
I thought this would be an easy class, but it definitely is not. Brother Hayes makes you work to get an A in the class. Homework takes forever, but the class is rewarding. I have never learned so much in a religion class. If you want an easy A do not take, if you want to really learn about the Old Testament be prepared to work for your grade.
If you love to learn you need to take a class from Randy Hayes. He will drastically change/improve the way you learn things. If you are lazy, don't even think about choosing him. He can tell when you don't want to learn, and it may be reflected in your grades. If you AREN'T lazy and love the scriptures, you need to study with Brother Hayes!!!
Hands down, my favorite teacher of all time. He is so insightful and intelligent, I learned so much from his class and he lets it be up to you as an individual to decide how much you want to get from the class. Way laid back and easy going. He is just awesome.
An excellent teacher! I learned more in this class than any other religious class I have ever taken. Be sure to come prepared and ready to participate. If you ask him a question, he will make sure it's answered and you understand it. I want to take all my classes from him.
Great Teacher and Speaker. Horrible grading system. The other comments are pretty spot on. You will get an 89% in the class no matter what you do. It is super unfair. There is no feedback on the work, the syllabus is confusing. No tests, one assignment a week, 89% in the class. If you want a B this is a perfect class for you. If A dont take
Brother Hayes was very knowledgable! I learned a new way to study my scriptures. However he can be pretty prideful often getting frustrated with the class. He will pretty much answer any question except if it is about your grade. If you work hard you will get a B. Assignments also take up quite a bit of time so be prepared.
If you want an easy 'A', and you want a light workload, don't take this guy. But if you want to learn a boat-load, & you want to learn a method of scripture study that truly helps you understand the scriptures, take this professor! You'll work 4 hours a week outside of class, but if you want to learn, it's worth it.
Bro Hayes is PHENOMENAL!! He's packed full of knowledge and really funny. His class is really hard, but worth it! In response to the other ratings complaining about getting an 89%, 90% is the highest you can get, that is an "A". I've taken 3 classes from him because I love his teaching style and I've received A's every semester. LOTS of reading!
Brother Hayes is really out spoken and social. He is also down to earth. You can turn in all work at the end of the semester. Pros: Fun, Energetic, Smart, and exciting. (makes scripture learning actually interesting) Cons: grading system is stupid. 89% max... so kiss your 4.0 goodbye. TONS OF WORK. Be careful with him! great guy
its a 300 lvl class be ready to earn your grade, dont take if you want an easy A. very strict on attendance and reading is overwhelming. AVOID HIM!
Brother Hayes is wonderfully inspiring! His love of the material he teaches helps students gain a greater desire to study and learn more.
Brother Hayes is awesome. Yes, you have to do the reading, extra research, and write in depth reviews of what you read. But, I got the most out of the class then I have any other religion class. He doesn't give tests, so it gives students a good opportunity to take control of their own learning. Whether you learn something or not is up to you.
Very interesting, but don't take this class if you're expecting an A. He thinks he is an easy grader and he will tell you that, when he really does expect perfection. I would like this guy as a sunday school teacher, not as a professor.
Brother Hayes is a wonderful teacher. He makes the material worth looking at and is a funny guy. He wants to get to know you, so we play a little get to know you "game" in the beginning of each class. You do have a lot of notes to take, but there are no tests or quizzes. Wonderful class!
I don't recommend this class. The top grade you can get is 90. He'll say "read 1 Kings- 2 Kings by next time" and expects us to read every single chapter and have it memorized, & gets mad if people can't answer his very specific questions in class. His test requires you to know Who, What, Where, When and Why of ANY Chapter in the O.T. he chooses.
