Greatest english techer of all time! Smart, funny, and all around fantastic. Teaches the material clearly, also relates it to other areas to facilitate understanding. Easy and fare marker.
Totally understands the student lifestyle. The best English class I have taken

Schroeder's a good teacher, and seems to really enjoy his job. He's a really enjoyable character, and is probably my favorite prof for this semester. I reccomend him to anyone wanting to take written composition.
BEST TEACHER EVER.. your lucky if you get him!
This guy is the best prof i had in 7 years of MRC/UofC. Recommmend him night and day.
Randy is a great professor who makes every class so captivating that attending is never difficult and always enjoyable...even if the subject matter is hard.
Ever see a teacher sprint up the stairs no matter where he went? me neither. take his class.
Great guy really. Not to many assignments, easy marks, final wasnt hard at all. He told us what to expect and followed threw with it. Very approachable, great to talk to. Never bored in his class, very funny and makes what is rather boring content exciteing and is funny in a weird quirky way. I think hes great, one of the best soo far.
Awesome prof!...made class enjoyable to go to. He even printed off stories for the class so we didnt have to waste money buy books! HIGHLY recommended.
RANDY SCHROEDER. He is a hard man with hard ideas. All this stuff about specific and precise may be okay for those in the "thinking disciplines," but most of us don't need it in today's world. In conclusion, I would say that his course is hard
No Comments
He is the werst. His idea of teaching is to make us werk hard and then mark real hard.
Super cool guy, I still talk to him three years after I took his class.
random and funny, good prof, easy to talk to
Awsome teacher and super fun! Makes learning English actually interesting
Randy is da bomb. His mind is empty and his heart is full. He will give direct transmission. But his teaching sucks.
Wonderfully engaging, high-energy, and fun! Presents difficult concepts through modern examples and is never too busy to help others. You will always walk away having learned something new and a new perspective on how to interpret things. Marks hard, but with good reason and will always let you re-write. 10/10
Makes the class interesting. The topics are dry, but he brings them to life in the classroom by interacting with students and his humor. If you have a hard time with the readings class attendance is essential to understanding concepts. He is very helpful, patient, and kind. Awesome prof!
He is pretty interesting but he marks way way too hard. You will have to really work in this class, because he has no interest in giving grades just for how hard you try.
Very very funny! I was not looking forward to taking another English class, but he made the most boring things like grammar interesting. He is willing to help if you ask and he's also a good role model. Not everyone who get's D's in university becomes a professor. Take his class!!!!
I loved his teaching methods! he would always be there to give an extra helping hand on an essay. HE IS SOOOO FUNNY TOO!! i'm sad I don't have a class with him anymore :(
Here is what I would say. Schroeder is very clear about his expectations and marking criteria, but will not budge on his standards. In other words, effort counts for nothing, only the quality of your work. I think effort should count, too.
Great prof, very approachable and fun. Hard marker though.
He's okay, but he grades to hard. Not nearly as good as Dr. Clifford Werier, who is a master at Shakespeare.
Tough marker, WEIRD personality. Love him or you hate him. I don't thank there's any in between.
we just had the midterm and it was marked with way too hard standards. He doesn't seem to understand that we need those marks to get into programs/grad schools, probably because its been too long since he was in our situation.
all this method he use of the socratic questioning IS NOT WHAT I SIGNED UP FOR. I did nat come to university to "think" I came to learn.
WAY too hard with grades. a "C" is NOT AVERAGE!!! expectations too high, standards too rigorous. I could only understood the standards AFTER the test, which is not my fault.
This course is a joke. He talk about these guys named Gerdel and Touring which isn't even real but some stuff he made up in his mind because he have no understanding of math. Then he grades so hard and this course is suppose to be a GPA booster. It's a GPA BREAKER
makes my head hurt. Every. Single. Class.
He really pushes you. The class I would describe as difficult, because you have to think in ways that are not very comfortable. But maybe many years from now it will be worth it. hard to tell.
at the start of the semester he told us that we would have more questions than answers by the end. I thought that was crazy. and he was right, there are more questions at the end. And I still think its crazy, this isn't like any other university class I've ever heard of.
???
Too difficult marking. Grades should be higher in a class like this one.
seems pretty fari, but be warned: he is CHIEF OF THE GRAMMAR POLICE. Just so U know.
I've had him twice, and yes he is pretty much chief of all the grammar police. But he is from the english department, so you pretty much get what you expect.
I'd say he is the Galactic Warlord of All Grammar. But thats because he has not kept up with the times and it is a basic pattern where he grades far too hard like they did probably in the 1970s and 1980s.
I'd add that it's not really grammar per se that he's after, it's more logic. If you don't have ideas that are precise you will probably be dead in the water. But you can learn with effort and his examples are straight off the chain. But he's weird.
Definitely the problem was that he insisted on giving the floor to all students. Most of the students in this class could not think clearly or critically or logically to save their life. Total junior high school. it was very annoying, because two or three of us were actually ready for this class. The guy next to me wasn't even ready for university.
This will sound weird, but he is too respectful of everyone's thoughts. He needs to shut it down once in a while.
Stellar if you want to be pushed out of your comfort zone. Dreadful if you don't. Schroeder is genetically incapable of giving you the sound bites served up on a platter. I like it, but I noticed some of the other students didn't.
Well he is one weird dude, and he is not going to change for you if you don't like his humour and the way he tangents. But if you like his personality it's a great time. And you learn lots.
Randy is a quirky guy. The topic for the GNED class was a bit weird - Science is Culture - but he made it reasonably interesting. Essay assignment worth 30%, no late penalty (just the end of semester), and a reasonable marker if you are a good writer. Check your grammar though. Final is a written essay - 2 hours long - didn't mark it too hard.
Seriously STRANGE, random, unpredictable! If your sleeping in class your in for a wild ride. You'll learn, but not what you thought you'd learn. And do watch your grammar, for real. If your fresh from high school... well, good luck!!!
Prepare to do nothing all semester and not understand what is going on and yet still manage to pull of a good grade. He's an entertaining guy, I would go to class to take whatever notes he DOES manage to give you, but his tests are ridiculously easy and he's generous when marking essays, at least in his GNED course.
I found this course very hard, some people found it easy they said. But its very abstract, I'm not used to learning this way.
I was also one of people who resented this course. It's actually not easy at all, except for the quizzes. But the course doesn't belong in a university, because like many others have said on campus, "curiosity" "Patience" and "tolerance for failure" are not what we pay to learn. This guy is too unique to be a teacher.
Randy would cut his own ears off in front of class if he knew it would shake you out of your complacency. I respect that, but I hated it. University = $$$$. It is not the appropriate place for self reflection and improvement.
He is friendly, fair and respectful, but he is very chilly. Don't expect him to be your friend or your daddy, he has his walls up 24-7. His quizzes are ridonkylously easy if U study what he tells you. His essay stuff is marked quite hard. You need logic and grammer.
I'm used to english tests where you just write and you write what you know. But this teacher makes you know everything like you're in a chem class. It can be very difficult if you don't keep up and STUDY.
Not a class english majors should be forced to take, because it had NOTHING to do with english!! Saying that, the instructor is almost painfully clear and rigorous, he expects you to know the content threw and threw--beg off, slack, and you'll crash for sure (like 13%, no joke)
advice: TAKE THIS CLASS WITH THE EASIER INSTRUCTOR!! Schroeder will not adjust the class for those of us who just want to do english A. he puts all definitions into history, so they are harder to pin down B. he rejects that theories are to be applied to literature because that's not "theory". C. he'll make you learn the content in detail. Too hard!
watch out on your essays. if you do not revise carefully and be a careful writer you can expet an essay mark somewhere between 60-70 %. this is generous marking in the instructor's opinion. tests are not too bad as long as you study.
Without question the hardest instructor in English. I should imagine he spends his free time daydreaming that he teaches calculus or second order logic or something.
he'll marks your essays like an english prof combined with a logic prof
bottom line - if you value your GPA, avoid.
He rambles off so much that I have no idea what he is saying. MAJORLY decreased my GPA. Attendance is not mandatory and there is really only one assignment but he marks hard on the only assignment. Interesting topics covered so not too dull of a class but he makes you want to skip all the time because you barely do anything all class.
GPA killer. There are SIX writing assignments. I got zero on two of them.
Kind and humorous as a man. Without mercy as a teacher. Six writing assignments and two exams. Go in knowing the facts.
Clear and logical to the effect that it is almost boring, step by step by step. I did notice that some of the first year students seemed lost, so it was a mixed class.
For a class on the theory of the English language Randy managed to make it interesting. Likely because he is simply an interesting person to listen too.
He's a very entertaining guy, would definitely recommend for the theory course because he tries to make the subject matter interesting
His lectures can be okay, and they are always on the quizzes, so take good notes. Just don't ask him about his time in the Marines.
fascinating class and thought provoking. But look elsewhere for a GPA Booster.
GPA torpedo. Especially if your an English maj.
GPA nightmare. His word was 'rigourous.' Our word was 'ridiculous.'
Never once did I feel like my GPA was in jeopardy because of Randy. If anything, his course raised it some. Too many people get their dander up about a professor who actually expects them to know subject matter and be reasonably capable with English. Too many other comments are incorrectly spelled and structured, so it's clear what the problem is.
Randy is not only a fantastic teacher, but also a fantastic person. I took this class and loved every second of it! It was interesting, made me look at things a different way, and Dr. Schroeder was absolutely hilarious, caring, and respected every single one of the students at all times. Amazing teacher, would 100% take ANY course he is teaching!!!
Very detail and logic oriented, he puts the premium on specificity. He HATES summarizing. Watch out on the writing assignments, they are heat-seeking missiles directed right at you're GPA
I can't say enough good things about Randy. He's very caring, supportive, and funny. He's willing to go the extra mile for his students, is very engaging and friendly. Best of all, he grades super fast. I got my final grade back within 3 days of the paper being handed in. Definitely looking forward to taking another class with him
Randy is one of the best profs in the English department. He is very kind, hilarious and actually cares for his students. He is very flexible on how long you can spend on assignments, and makes sure everyone understands the content. His midterm was very difficult, but the final was a take home final. He makes a boring course enjoyable.
Randy is a really nice guy and without a doubt he is a great professor. But I did find this class quite boring and I did not understand the material entirely. The final was take home which was a life saver because the midterm was difficult.
Did not really understand what was going on 95% of the time, but he was pretty eccentric and funny. Not really necessary to go to class half the time, as long as you finish the assignments for when its due. He prefers originality, so for the journal entries, the paper, and final, try to make it more personalized and different. Easy class overall!
I'd say that he prefers specificity, because that's all he ever talks about. Six writing assignments, and all he ever wants is specificity and clearness and a good logical structure so don't try to be fancy.
Randy's lectures are always fun and engaging. He jokes around frequently. Sometimes, it feels like his humour gets in the way of his teaching though. While he teaches the subjects well, sometimes it seems like classes don't offer too much new information. However, he does do a good job of explaining and demonstrating concepts. Would recommend.
He once shared his bar of toblerone with the whole class but other than that his exams are too difficult. He is a very hard marker especially on essays.
There's simply no good choice when it comes to ENGl 2202. I've had both profs and they are very different, but they are both are such tough graders that there's no way to coast to a good mark and you need one if your major is english.
Randy is an amazing professor, probably one of my favourites. He's really nice and good on extending deadlines if you talk to him. The lectures can be kind of boring, but if you take notes and study for the tests you will do fine. I would highly recommend taking a class with him if you get the chance.
Most boring class ever, so much knowledge!
I had Randy for a gen ed & it was a great class. Very knowledgeable man, and also hilarious. The whole semester was spent talking about interesting things and we watched a few movies. You don't need to go to class half the time. One paper. Midterm was ridiculously easy. Final was an essay where you write about your choice of topic. Take his class!
knows the stuff, but not an easy class. lots of ideas. one big essay, but FIVE more writing assignments, and their all pretty difficult. his midterm was hard but fair.
Rand is an awesome prof! He is hilarious so listening to his lectures is fun! He is very knowledgable about what he teaches as well as quite passionate about it. He is also openminded and easy going. I enjoyed going to his classes, and I would definitely take a class taught by him again!
Randy was an awesome prof! Loved the class - you definitely get the most out of it if you attend the lectures. Assignments - three journals and one essay - are fairly simple if you put in the time. The midterm had a lot of literary terms, but he uses them frequently in the lectures so you get used to them. I'd take another class from him.
Randy is a huge jokester. On the first day of classes someone suggested that his name was Karl and he's still going with it. He makes boring material entertaining with his quirkiness and wit. Great guy, would take a class from him again.
Lots of interesting ideas in his class but if you ask questions that are on the outline or already on the handouts or are just lazy he'll tell you that he's not going to add to you're "learned helplessness" and for sure make you do it yourself
The curriculum was very boring but he made it fun. You definitely don't need to show up to do well but he's very funny and you are missing out if you don't come. 10/10 would take his class again, just not this exact one.
Non-mandatory attendance and no late policy on work. Midterm was memorization and final was an essay. Easy marks and hes a funny guy, really loved this class.
Terrible, terrible class. so much hard thinking and should not be in an english degree at all. This class will eat up and spit out you're GPA like no other especially with this prof.
This class is pointless for an English degree and will lower your gpa. The textbook is awful, at best.
Randy was a great prof and I enjoyed coming to his class. He was tough grading papers but other aspects of the class were extremely easy (including the final). Would recommend Randy if you are looking for an easy GNED requirements.
Novel use, not textbook:). What a beauty.
Randy is very funny, chill and approachable. Very knowledgeable. Very organized, and his expectations are always clear. I have him for two classes, and I enjoy his teaching style in both. Very fair assignments/tests. He seems to give only a few assignments/tests that are weighted heavily, so make sure that you are okay with that. Highly recommend!
Taking a class with Randy was probably the best decision ive ever made for my stress level. Very easy to do well in his class, 3 assignments are pass/fail, one paper that as long a your clear and follow his grading criteria youll do well, midterm thats memorization, and an essay for the final exam. Not a stressful class or a stressful professor
Between Soren Kierkegaard , and Epicurious, he is one of my favorites , it's all in a story , and more importantly a character.
Rand is absolutely hilarious. Synchronous classes would have been so much better to be honest, but his humour in the pre-recorded lectures kind of made up for it. (Like who lies to everyone it's world ukulele day?) He's a great prof, I just couldn't get myself to be interested in the content and found assignments more difficult because of that.
Rand makes content that seems overwhelming and obscure seem interesting and relatable. Only a few actual assignments, shorter lectures, and very good instructions. I really enjoyed his personality even though this was an online course, he did a great job seeming personable and friendly. Love his jokes and puns.
extremely funny prof, will give you a good laugh
Though Randy is a nice man, I found his lectures confusing and they wouldn't really answer what we were going over. The textbook we had to read was so much worse, and he even admitted that it wasn't relevant anymore in English. Which made it frustrating to even want to read with how poorly the book way written.
Randy was great! Had him last fall and he adapted to online super well. Class was super light and low stress for a gen ed option.
Randy is a very nice guy, however he does tend to go off on tangents. Which makes the classroom discussion off topic for most of the class, so you don't get the full info you are wanting. I stopped attending class cause it felt like a waste of time and just did the assignments by reading the textbook, got a decent grade.
a lot of reading of confusing content i've experienced in my university years, but engaging. Learn to write dynamically with flow, incorporate interesting ideas, and you'll do fine. Zero class groups, group work or presentations which i personally enjoyed. All in all, a great and funny professor. His use of emoji's *chefs kiss* unparalleled.
Randy was a caring prof. The only thing is that he talks and does not really write down the information. Make sure to really show up to lectures and you'll do fine!
He is very very knowledgeable in his field, to the point where I don't always understand 100% of what he's talking about, but maybe that's just because I'm dumb lol. He has very few assignments and tests, so there's less of them but they're weighted more. Depending on your learning style, you'll either really succeed in his class or you'll hate it.
Randy is such a chill prof. Very nice, funny, and understanding. Classes were kind of boring and random but it was the best GNED I've ever taken. One essay and 2 online tests
Randy was an awesome professor. He was very chill and laid back, a very funny, entertaining guy. Class lectures were a little boring due to the boring content. But the professor was a very chill and nice guy.
Randy is a super chill professor who keeps things light and entertaining. While the content can be a bit dry, his jokes and personable nature make the class enjoyable. The workload is manageable - just stay engaged, and tools like unstuck study can be really helpful for studying.
Just an amazing professor all around, if you don't like writing he might not be for you. But if you enjoy writing and the subject he is teaching then he will make you like it even more.
I have had Randy almost every year throughout my degree at MRU. He is staple within the department, and rightfully so. He is a practical prof who cares! He truly understands the creative process, this class and Randy has made me a better writer! In a personal sense, Randy is hilarious and a great person! Taking a class with Randy is amazing!
Randy is a very chill and funny prof and his lectures are quite interesting. Would definitely recommend taking one of his classes!
Good lectures, primarily socratic. Don't skimp on the textbook, and don't skip. Majority of testing is based on the textbook, supplemented and explained by the lectures. Doesn't use slides most of the time. Exams are open book and written.
I love Uncle Zugg.
