I had two exams. First half of the class was easy, second half a little hard but not bad at all. If you just take notes and study when you need to, this class isn't hard. His exams come from his notes and the practice exams are extremely similar to the tests. He gives quizzes in lectures but they're not hard.
The class starts off kinda easy, but the tests keep getting harder and harder. The lab section to this class is very very very easy but the lecture is all powerpoint that you have to take good notes for. Overall, the class ended up being tough but i didnt mind him as a teacher, he was a nice guy but the exams were really hard
Evolution and Society was a discussion-based class. Dr. Small is extremely friendly and engaging, and is an easy grader. Extremely likeable; would recommend for any class.
Very funny, fair, and enthusiastic about helping students learn. Go to lecture, take good notes, do the hw and practice problems and you will definitely get an A or B. Great professor, great guy, by far my favorite here @UT. Highly recommended!
One of the best professors at UT....easily the BEST Biology professor at UT. Very fair, helpful, and enthusiastic. Love him!
Best teacher I've had at UT. I attended every lecture and Dr. Small actually made it interesting. Some of the stuff that seemed so hard in 140 actually made sense when Small taught it in 240. He's a very fair grader and really cares about student success. You have to attend class and take all the notes, but if you do, you will get an A.
Dr. Small is a great professor! He is enthusiastic about his subject and makes everything very clear. He posts notes that you fill in during class to keep you engaged. His tests are hard but reasonable. If you study some and make an effort there's no reason you shouldn't get a good grade. I'd definitely take him again!
Dr. Small is a great teacher. He is very energetic and loves biology. His tests are hard, but it comes from his notes and he tells you if you need to know something from the book. He gives lots of easy clicker quizzes and in class group assignments that boost your grade.
Definitely take him! He makes class interesting and genuinely cares about his students' grades and understanding levels! Tests were not too bad and if you put in some kind of effort you will do great.
This guy was a awesome teacher! Just go to class and take notes, they come right out of the book so it's easy to study. Everything that is covered in class will be on the test, and that's all. He does a very good job of explaining things.Always go to class because there's clicker quizzes and group projects he gives for points.
Randy is a model professor. He is clear and fair. Very straightforward about what you need to learn. You have to go to class because he has clicker quizzes (which will cushion your grade). Strict no electronics policy which forces you to pay attention. Overall, best professor I've had so far.
he's a good teacher. really p[assionate about what he teaches. if you take notes and study youll do fine i barely study except the night before the test and have a B
Take Dr. Small!! He is a great teacher and really cares about what he is teaching. Go to class and take notes and you will be fine!
I love this professor. He is always very energetic and entertaining. Go to class and take notes; make sure to study. His tests aren't too bad, though the short answers will always get you. He is very nice and willing to help students. Highly recommend him.
Dr. Small is a great professor, really pleasant and knows his stuff. I loved being in his class and as long as you read and do the few small assignments, you'll do fine.
Absolutely stellar professor. He likes to play music before class starts, (good music, mind you) and he loves talking with the students and constantly asks if homework assignments were fair. He's been known to curve grades in both lecture and lab. Overall, amazing guy. Class was always fun even in a huge lecture hall.
TAKE DR.SMALL...he is the best professor i have had so far...he really cares about the students...attendance is not mandatory, but he gives random clicker quizzes...his class is fun and entertaining...study NOTES for tests and if there are tables from the book you need to know he will tell you..he clarifies everything very well..go to office hours!
He is really an awesome teacher. This was one of the rather LARGE lecture courses so I encourage students to go to his office hours for extra help, if needed. I would recommend him
Dr. Small was one of the best professors I had at UT. He's always energetic and loves teaching the material. He made every lecture interesting even if the material was boring. Definitely recommend taking his class.
He's a great professor! His tests can be challenging, but he gives opportunities for points with clicker quizzes. He's really clear on what he teaches.
Amazing teacher. Very funny, and very helpful. Get his class!!!
Super fun guy! He's interesting to listen to, plays music before class, and is easy going! Definitely take him for 130
Dr. Small is a GREAT teacher and an great guy. He wants his students to learn the material. He assigns Mastering Biology which is really useful for preparing for exams. He also gives extra opportunities for points with fun clicker uizes in class. However, attendance is not mandatory, but it's recommended. He's a cool guy
Great Great Guy!!!!! Extremely helpful. Goes out of his way to help you. Have to study though!!! He is very clear on what you need to know for the tests. Best Bio 130 at UT
Dr. Small is an awesome teacher! He doesnt just lecture he actually teaches and makes class fun and interesting. Hes a really cool and laid back guy. Im holding out on taking genetics in hope that he'll be teaching it the next semester, cant wait to have him again. Class isnt difficult if you pay attention and read over notes. Best science class.
Dr. Small is the best science teacher I have ever had. He is fun and still very informative. I have learned so much. I hope to take him again.
TAKE DR. SMALL!!! He is an amazing teacher! Always attend his class though, because he has clicker quizzes every class, which really boost your grade. His lectures come straight from the book and almost everything he covers in class is on the tests, so take really good notes! Make sure you study though, because the tests are difficult! Take him!
BEST TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD. Seriously if he as an option try your hardest to get him! His lectures are interesting and he explains things to you and really knows his stuff. Lots of extra points available through clickers and master bio. Have to attend class for sure but he makes it as fun as a bio class can be. Tests only over what he covers.
he is great,
Really down to earth cool professor. Played music to start the class with a nice vibe. He wore awesome shirts to class and made lecture interesting. and had us do easy group projects occasionally. Come to class bc he does clicker questions. His tests are difficult if you don't study and tricky if you do, but he, as well as his class is awesome.
LOVED DR. SMALL! He is a great lecturer and he makes the subject interesting. A really cool guy. Study for the tests (esp the final exam) because they can be difficult.
Attend class because there are clicker questions. Also, take your time on the Mastering Biology assignments. You can score well if you don't rush and that will help your grade. He's really chill, and his lectures are easy to understand. Exams can be difficult but definitely passable if you study. Final exam is all multiple choice. Do recommend!
Dr. Small is a awesome teacher. Attend class, because there are clicker questions. One of the best and nicest professors I have had at UT so far.
Love Dr. Small. He is extremely intelligent. Really passionate about the material he teaches. The material can be boring, but he does his best to make it interesting. Go to class to get clicker points. Tests can be a little difficult but definitely passable.
Small is a great professor and will be one of the easier teachers. Make sure to do all of your HW and attend class because he gives clicker questions that add up after awhile. You have to study in this class in order to get an A. He loves students that go to his office hours so attend those. It will only help your grade. Take him!
He's tests are extremely hard. Does not clarify the topic well. And really does not seem to care about the students.
Dr. Small is a great professor, probably one of the best biology professors at this university. Exams aren't easy but, it is still very possible to get an A without getting straight A's on his exams. Take his class, put for some effort and you won't regret.
He is a great professor! A lot of people say his tests are too hard, but I didn't have any trouble with them probably because I read the book, which I strongly suggest you do before class. He really cares about your understanding of the material. One of my favorite professors so far!
Dr. Small is very passionate about what he teaches, and his enthusiasm is clear in his lectures. Three tests and a final, and he posts great study guides about the material. He takes forever to put your test grades up, but his class is still worth it. Highly recommend him.
Takes awhile to grade exams, but I really enjoyed his lectures. He really wants you to do well. Great guy, would take again.
Dr. Small is a great lecturer! I didn't really care for the course material, but he does a good job making it as interesting as possible. He uses lots of great examples to help you understand the concepts. Tests are reasonably easy, but he takes FOREVER to get grades back.
Dr Small is a great professor. It's hard to pay attention sometimes, but he posts all of his powerpoints online. You have clicker questions just about every class but they're graded on participation instead of accuracy. He's helpful in every way and sends emails to remind you about upcoming assignments. I highly recommend Dr. Small for this class.
Dr. Small is an AMAZING professor. I enjoyed his lectures and everything we learned. He has clicker questions, so go to class! He post power-points online so you can really take notes on what he says. He is really nice and cares a lot about his job! I would definitely take him again!
Awesome teacher! He seems very passionate about the subject which makes the lectures much more interesting than would likely otherwise be.
Dr Small was a great professor. Very interesting, clearly cares about the topic and his students. Tests were easy and were very similar to the study guides
Dr. Small was a great professor! His lectures were interesting and to the point. He clearly cares about this subject and it willing to help anyone who asks. The tests are straight forward and similar to the study guide. As long as you attend lecture and discussion, you will have no problem making an A.
Dr Small is the best professor i have had, he has a genuine interest and passion in teaching and his subject which makes it a lot easier to be involved in the lectures. Discussion TA's are horrible and that will bring your grade down. Small prepares you well for exams and makes study guides available.
20 pages of reading at least before every lecture, and lots of clicker points so make sure you're there.
I really enjoyed Professor Small. Make sure you study your notes for the test as well as the study guide. If you are totally comfortable with the study guides then you will do well on the test. Can be hard at times. The required BioLit section for 150 in general can definitely effect your final grade though.
Professor Small is great! He is very good at explaining the material and making it easy to understand. Tests are pretty easy as long as you study the powerpoints and study guides he posts online. He takes forever to grade tests and homework.
Dr. Small is a great teacher! He is straightforward and an easy grader. He gives 5 or 6 homework assignments online and has a few in class projects throughout the semester to add a couple of participation points. The says textbook is required, but just read over the powerpoint and you'll be fine for the exams. The best biology teacher at UT.
Dr. Small is a decent teacher. Gives a few homework assignments over the course of the semester. He takes forever to grade. Gives a study guide before each exam, so if you can grasp the study guide you'll ace the exams. Doesn't always email you back. the discussion portion or BioLit is a huge portion of your grade. Take it seriously from day one.
The class is the worstttt. He does not answer email. Lots of homework . This class has way to much work for being a freshman level course. I don't suggest takin his class
Randy is an amazing Professor! I highly recommend taking any of his classes! He makes lectures interesting and you can tell he loves the subjects he teaches! He gives study guides for tests. Make sure you read before doing the Mastering Biology Hw
Dr. Small is very bad at responding to emails especially when it involves your grade. His lectures are very boring and also very confusing. He cares more about you visiting places he has already been compared to actually what we need to learn.
Randy is by far the best biology teacher I've had at UT. He cares about each of his students success, he isn't the best at answering his emails, but if you talk to him after class, he will make sure your situation is handled quickly. Funny lecturer, great guy, would take again.
Randy is a cool dude. The lectures are pretty interesting. There are clicker points and a few in class assignments, but overall attendance isn't a huge part of your grade in lecture. In biolit, though, attendance is everything, so don't skip that. Tests aren't too hard if you have an idea of what's going on. Overall, not a bad class.
Hes a great professor! He knew the information. The only thing is sometimes he would get so passionate & talk about one topic too long to make us behind on the PowerPoint for that day, but other than that hes very cool & approachable!
Dr. Small is very kind and cares about his students. His lectures prepare you for the exam really well and they're not too difficult.
Literally my favorite professor I have ever taken. He's so sweet and actually cares about you as a person. He is very easy to reach and his tests are based on the lecture. We have homework online but it is based off of the textbook. I would 1000% take him again <3.
Honestly, if you pay attention to his lectures you'll do relatively good on his exams. This is coming from a person who hardly studied for his tests. He cares about his students and is easy to reach out to. He does give out hw sometimes but they're moderately easy to complete. Nothing too much to complain about.
Participation/attendance was never enforced, but both are key for being successful in his biology class. Dr. Small made sure to respect students' differences in opinions regarding the origin of life. He taught from an evolutionary perspective, but he encouraged discourse outside of class between opposing worldviews. 10/10, would take again.
Professor Small is great and you can really tell he loves what he does. He does clicker questions in class but doesn't technically take attendance. There's a lot of really small grades but if you don't do well on the exams you won't get a good grade, so make sure you go to lecture and do the readings.
Dr.Small is an amazing professor and his TA is great as well. He gives extra credit. He is very helpful and sweet. I definitely recommend taking him. His lectures were very enjoyable and I would take his class again if I could.
Dr. Small is the best professor on campus. Mon. and Wed. are devoted to learning new materials, and Fri. is for reviewing previous concepts. Exams are straightforward and easy if you pay attention in class (97/100 points). You receive clicker points on Monday and Wednesday, a measure (somewhat) of attendance. Homework is easy and very infrequent.
He is a really nice guy and knows a lot of students by name but he is a little difficult to follow and doesn't take a lot of time to go back to help students comprehend. He really teaches what is is but kind of expects you to understand. Also besides clickers he doesn't assign many assignments so you really have to do well on the exams
There are so many good things I could write about Dr. Small! From his lectures you can seriously tell how passionate he is about the material. His exams are pretty straightforward but center around application-based questions. He does clicker questions during lectures, gives easy homework assignments, and offers lots of extra credit opportunities.
Small was one of the best teachers I have had at UTK. He was so approachable and he genuinely cares about his students and their success. I met with him to understand material better and go over tests and he was so helpful and understanding. Go to class because he explains topics really well and uses in class exercises for better understanding.
Dr. Small was fantastic. He is an incredibly interactive professor and truly cares about his students, even in a large lecture setting! His lectures are extremely helpful in forming a solid foundational understanding of biology. Attending class is extremely important as his exams focus on the application of concepts learned in lecture.
Professor Small is extremely caring. So much so that his goal is to remember every student's name. His lectures are easy to follow as are the assigned readings. It's important to attend class as you'll often have in class assignments or clicker questions. That being said, it's an easy A if you attend.
While Dr. Small was an approachable professor, he was one of the worst lecturers I have had at UTK. He graded exams and reading quizzes very harshly, rarely allowing full points on assignments. He did not respond to questions or emails about final grades and put them in last minute. His lectures are boring and repetitive and he favors students.
Dr. Small's evolution class was amazing! He is very enthusiastic about the material and it is never a dull day in his class. There is some reading but the science daily articles & textbook were full of engaging material. This class is very similar to bio150, & it's basically a review of it. You are guaranteed to learn something new in his class.
he is a very caring teacher, he is eager to answer all questions and he is truly passionate about biology. He gives many resources and wants all his students to suceed.
Take him if you can, you can tell he really cares and wants his students to succeed
I love his class, he is very understanding and cares about his students. The material he is teaching is personally very difficult for me to pay attention to, but that is not his fault. The class was easy but was uninteresting due to the material, not Dr. Small.
I struggled a little to follow along but if you ask him to clarify things (in and out of class) he is MORE THAN HAPPY to do so. You can tell he REALLY like his job, which I find it to be very nice when it comes from a teacher. Lecture every day. Sometimes in class work. Attendance not mandatory but taken with clicker questions, so no points if miss
Dr. Small loves biology and it's obvious. He's a cool guy who genuinely cares for his students and their grades. As long as you attend all the lectures and pay attention, you'll be good. There were three midterms then the final. The final seemed a lot harder than all the previous, so really focus on that. I would also go to SI meetings!
As long as you read the textbook and pay attention in class you will do well. Dr. Small genuinely cares about his students and is always willing to help. Attendance is mandatory due to clicker questions and in class assignments. If you miss class you will miss the points for those. Overall great professor though.
Personally, this class was difficult for me. The exams were tough and required reading the textbook in depth which was very tedious. The teacher made false statements about extra credit in class but never followed through with it. I just disliked this class a lot and would not recommend it to anyone especially if you are trying to bring up your gpa
I love biology and this class was very easy. He made it fun and was an awesome lecturer. I would for sure take again!
Dr. Small is a great professor. You can tell he really cares about biology, and he is just a genuinely good person. I did not pay attention in lecture, and I only studied the night before yet made A's on all the tests. He posts his lecture slides, and the information is very straightforward. There was a lot of textbook homework, but it wasn't hard!
His lectures are interesting, and he always engages with his students in class, he often remembers his students names despite teaching large classes. He is always encouraging and helping students to do undergrad research.
He is very kind and caring about his students and has obvious passion about the topic. He encourages lots of class participation and uses clickers on occasion. Tries to learn every student's name as well
Very good and very interesting
He was a great professor, who really brought the energy for class and showed his genuine care for students. He told us exactly what to expect on exams and answered questions thoughtfully, never making anyone feeling dumb. Overall, he's a really cool, spunky guy, who is super available if you ever need extra help. Highly recommend Prof. Small!
Small is an energetic guy who is very passionate about what he does. He makes lectures collaborative and engaging but I just found biology quite boring lol. If you pay attention to class and take notes and study, you will do just fine. I didn't put in much work to this class bc I was taking chem but I did fine.
Dr. Small is such a fun lecturer, he does do a lot of in class assignments with groups, but they can be done online if you miss the class. He was very clear with what would be on the exams and overall was a super chill guy. Definitely recommend!
Dr. Small is the best instructor I have had yet. He has a great passion for science and he truly cares about students and their understanding and wants to pass on his knowledge and enthusiasm. He is an extremely engaging lecturer and is big on participation. There is a lot of reading, but if you do so and take notes this class will be a breeze!
Dr. Small is so caring and enthusiastic about Biology. He truly wants students to succeed and is very accessible outside of class. He references the textbook often, but only wants you to understand big picture concepts. Clickers were used frequently. Towards the end of the semester, he did get behind on grading and posting class material.
Dr. Small is a great professor. For someone who is not interested in biology it was hard to focus in class towards the end. The exams are somewhat easy if you study a lot. He did clicker questions in class but always had the same code and one homework assignment per week.
Dr. Small is very enthusiastic. I enjoyed his lectures. The BIOL150 exams aren't terribly difficult as long as you show up to class and take notes. He works review into the class sessions as well.
Dr. Small's class is phenomenal. You can easily get away with not paying attention in the lectures as long as you study the slides he posts before the exam. I wasn't a huge fan of biolit as it is tedious and the TA's are questionable, but it's only 20% of your grade so it's whatever. Take this professor 100%
Dr. Small is an amazing lecturer and you can tell he is passionate about what he is teaching. I am generally not very interested in the content of this class, but if you have to take BIO150 like i did, please take him because he made the class genuinely enjoyable. Homework was minimal, but BioLit sucks so be ready for lots of reading for that.
Dr. Small holds engaging lectures, and it is clear he is passionate about what he is teaching. The online assignments are due before class, but so easy and help with understanding the lectures. There are clickers most classes as well as in-class assignments. Highly recommend him!
BIO 150 is a hard class but Dr. Small is without a doubt, the kindest professor I've had at UT. Super accessible outside of class and always willing to help.
Dr. Small is absolutely phenomenal. He is by far the most passionate and knowledgeable professor I've ever had. I absolutely loved when he would play music or introduce certain faculty, programs, poems, and art that he liked. The biology department is ran wonderfully, and the exams are completely covered in class. Chem department take notes!
He's incredibly smart and caring, and I truly hope every biology major gets the chance to have him as a professor. He genuinely cares about his students and is dedicated to helping them succeed.
Dr. Small was a great professor. The class is lecture heavy but the material is not hard to understand. The readings outside of class took a long time but they really prepared me well for the tests. If you read and use all the resources he posts you will do well.
