Very clear and helpful.....lots of notes...nice guy!
tests are hard! teaches straight from the book
He teaches a hard subject very well. Do the book probs, and tests aren't bad
i hate chemistry, but he does a good job teaching and is always there to help
i dropped the class, and he looks like a bumblebee - he's helpful and nice thoug
His tests are hard and don't come from book or lectures. Not a good professor.
clear teaching
nice guy, horrible prof and way too smart to teach this class
Hes always willing to help. Tests are hard, but hard subject. Dont fall behind!
this man was the worst prof ever, he thinks everyone is a smart as he is
Hard! Problems on tests are nothing like in the book, very hard tests!

Told me i shouldn't ask questions anymore. .. i 2nd the "looks like a bumblebee"
He hates to answer your questions. He yells at you for not understanding.
too smart to teach, but totally willing to help if you ask
too smart to teach this class. gets upset when you dont understand. hard tests
No Comments
class is very difficult, tests hard, skipping is not an option for passing!
Hard tests, but managable. Definately don't procrastinate, and do the work!!!
This may come as a shock, but you might have to study a little for this course!
Stay far, far away if organic is hard for you
unclear confusing gets angry if too many ?s thinks you should know everythin
SUCKS! Drop him ASAP! Not that hard of a course, but he makes it too hard!
Dosen't seem to come to class prepared, tests on pointless material.
This course is hard no matter who you have. He helps, alot, even on his own time
Don't ask questions cause he gets mad at you! Very unfriendly, worst prof ever!!
Don't fall behind

Assigns Problems, then tests on different mat'l. Gets mad at questions.
Good Prof. I've never seen more miscommunication...classes stupidity to blame
No Comments
Very good prof, took class the 2nd time with him and he was a much better prof.
gets confused when you ask him a question. ask him a question and he'll go blank. if you want to learn something...take it with another prof
Don't take him, avoid if at all possible
The ones that dropped were the smart ones! He has no sympathy. He will treat you like you are stupid if you ask him questions. He outright makes derrogatory comments about your intellegence. Looks like an ugly version of Kevin Spacey.
He is mean and yelled at me for asking a question. He's a strange little short man so watch out!
Do whatever you can to avoid his class!!! He's the worst teacher. Smart guy, but can't explain things very well. Gets frustrated when you don't understand. I retook the class with another prof and got an A.
Wow, all those that posted before me must be bio majors... He is one of the nicest, fairest, and more approachable professors I've ever met. He is always willing to sit down with you and go over a topic. He knows his material and knows how to teach.
All what has been said is true, though, if you like the material, and if you are taking those classes, you should, and you know the material, he is a good prof. If you don't like the material or don't know the chemistry, bad things...really bad things...
Great lab prof. He's very approachable and helpful. I'm a bio major, so chem is not my thing, but he made lab much more enjoyable. I feel like I learned a lot from him.
Nice guy, but takes way to long on pre lab stuff. a little anal about the glassware.
not a good prof, knowledgeable but cannot convey the material to students clearly. Heed my advice and get into a diff section now or have fun teaching yourself 241 <----- im not joking
Unrealistic expectations on tests. Tries to make very difficult tests. Helpful when you ask quesitons, very poor on helping you prepare for tests. AVOID IF POSSIBLE. I hear he's not so bad in lab.
smart guy but he expects you to already know the material before coming to lecture. his tests are hard but the class is heavily curved. get another professor unless you want to teach yourself.
Organic chemistry is a difficult class and Dr. Winchester understands that. He is very dedicated to clarifying in class and helping outside of class. Exams are almost always curved. I would definitely recommend having him as a professor. You can learn a lot yet your grade won't suffer horribly.
as a teacher he isnt the best but as a lab instructor hes great.
His tests are hard, but hey, it's organic chem...what do you expect?! He's very enthusiastic and willing to talk to you one on one to help in understanding the material. He also grades on a curve which is very nice. I thought he was a great teacher for how difficult the subject material is.
He is very enthusiastic and attempts to teach the material in a clear manner. He understands the class is difficult and is willing to help you do good in a number of ways. He also curves your grade which is a bonus. :)
Very good professor; presents material in a slow, very clear way. Organic Chem is hard, so tests are not easy but he will go at your pace, and not many profs at this level curves so many exams.
Tough as heck! Exams suck! Study hardcore and still get a horrible grade! Run away as fast as you can!
Though his lectures seem reasonable, and he is extremely helpful and willing to meet in his office...look out, his tests are insane! Even "A" students fail his tests. The final is much easier, allowing for a better grade, and replaces one unit exam with final, so it is passable, but barely!
If you don't know what you're talking about when you visit him in office hours, he WILL make you feel like an idiot. Tests are very hard unless you are an organic chemist.
He is a great professor. If you put your time in to understanding the material, not just memorizing, you will be fine for the tests. He is hard, but it is well worth the effort.
Get ready to study A LOT and still fail his tests! Do not go and ask him qustions unless you are prepared to feel totally dumb! It's not all bad though, his grading is fair and he holds review sessions before tests.
I had him a couple years ago, so I don't know if it's still this way, but he taught the material at a graduate level, then became angry at anyone with a question. You will do much better with Prof Witucki, I re-took CHM 241 with her - what a difference.
I love this prof. He's great, very clear, very nice. You learn a lot for other classes. You know what to expect on all his tests and quizes. He gives some extra work but it helps your grade a lot in the end.
Pretty straight-forward teacher. Gives a lot of review so you know what to expect on his tests.
He is a horrible professor. He is very full of himself and not helpful. He can (and will) talk about a lab for 50 min. without explaining any part of it. Then if you ask him questions, he treats you like an idiot. Many times we couldn' even finish lab in time. DON'T TAKE HIM FOR LAB!!! There are many better professors for this lab then him.
I loved him! He's this funny guy who laughs at the most random things! His tests are really hard, but if you do the assigned reading and understand the major concepts, you'll do ok. He does a lot of review, which helps a lot, and he's always willing to answer questions. He curves exams and gives extra credit quizzes to help your grade. Good prof!
Nice guy and willing to work through things during office hours and discussion, although he's not always great about actually being in the office during office hours. He's one of those professors who notices who shows up for class and seems more forgiving/willing to help if he sees you're actually putting in effort.
I really liked this prof! s It's my 2nd go @ CHM241 & he made things SO much more clear than my previous prof. He is willing to adjust the speed of teaching so that students can keep up and he's VERY willing to help you! Discussions are for asking ?s and reinforcing what we've learned, not quizzes. The class is super hard, but he is super helpful!!
CHM 231 is a hard class but this proffessor makes it way easier than i could be. He used to be accused of being impersonalble and not a good teacher but after finding out that students hated him he has really done a 180 and is now so easy to talk to and gives great lectures (as great as an organic lecture can be.
He's a pretty good prof, but sometimes his pace is waaay too slow. He also seems to "dumb down" the material at times.
I found him to be extremely clear with the material, he ended up giving extra credit for really well thought-out questions in lecture. If there is any tiny thing that is unclear, make sure to ask (this is important with whomever you end up taking organic chem with). He is very excited to clarify although he then tends to dumb-down the rest of the
I was nervous going into the class because I read so many bad reviews on here... don't believe any of them! He is the nicest man! His tests can be difficult, but come on, its organic chemistry! He is very excited if you ask him questions. Also, he does what he can to help you raise your grade (aka extra credit!)
Great Prof! If you have to take organic chemistry then take it with him! Kind of hard but easier than most chem teachers. Extra credit. Final replaces lowest exam.
Winchester is a good teacher, but he seems to think that chemistry is the only class that people are taking! The tests were SO hard...I would have had to study for hours and hours to do well on them. I wish that he had a notes guide so that I could actually pay attentention in class instead of taking so many notes about which I was clueless!
Great Prof. Replaces lowest exam with final score. Easier than some other organic profs. Take him.
He applied organic chemistry to real life examples, which helped in remembering the information taught and provoked further thinking and questions even outside of class.
CHM 242 is a really hard class, but Winchester is a great professor. Really knows his stuff, and explains it very well. Test are really hard, and memorizing won't help, but if you take enough time to really understand the concepts, it will pay off. No homework, just quizzes, 4 exams and the final. Recommend taking him!
Even though I didn't do well on the exams (am retaking for better grade), he is hands down the best prof. I've had at GVSU. He teaches very well; adjusts the tempo based on difficulty, and always around to help. Highly recommended.
Very nice prof! I really enjoy being in his class. He explained materials very clearly and very kind and helpful.
Compared to other professors, Winchester is pretty difficult. His notes during lecture are hard to follow. He doesn't give his own worksheets or practice problems which makes his tests extremely difficult. He is very demanding and I would recommend a different prof!
Dr. Winchester is a solid professor. His pace was great and he was extremely fair; exceedingly so. Check into his office hours for help with lab. He's willing to help. The tests suck, but again are fair. Read the book, go to lecture and you've got a shot.
I didn't like this professor at all. His lectures were hard to follow. I always felt prepared for exams and would do poorly because of curveball questions. He doesn't teach example problems which made it hard to understand.
He is a very sweet guy and enjoyable to talk with. His lectures are good but he can be a little unorganized and he doesn't always cover everything you need to know for the exam. His exams are pretty hard and you need make sure you teach yourself all of the topics.
The class is VERY difficult, but he is willing to always help when you need it. He schedules review sessions and has flexible office hours. Not a bad idea to take him!
HARD CLASS!! Wow, his tests are very difficult and you need to know everything like the back of your hand. He seems to lack a little confidence and his lectures are a little hard to follow sometimes. The positives are that he is always willing to meet out of class and posts all his lecture notes online if you miss a class (BUT DONT!)
Tests are very difficult. He expects a lot out of his students and at times seems to forget we have other classes. With this said, he is always around to help you and will go out of his way for students (reschedule exams for you if you have to work and holds study sessions outside of class). Don't take him if you're lazy though.
Exams tend to throw curveball questions that are extremely difficult. Quizzes are generally pretty easy fortunately. The class requires very hard work and professor is willing to meet outside of class. If you are looking for a good grade I'd suggest another professor.
Randy...where to start. For every hour of lecture, I spent 8+ hrs outside of class studying the textbook. He tests are hard and conceptual, but his quizzes cushion your grade and he can be helpful(ish) in office hours. Really sweet guy. ONLY take him if you want orgo to equal your life for an entire semester though (lecture+office+self/group study)
Dr. Winchester is a nice guy, just not a very good professor. When I go to lecture and read the book, somethings in lecture doesn't even follow the book. The book explains concepts WAY better than he does. Exams and quizzes are fair but most of the questions are things that he doesn't spend much time on discussing. Read the book and you'll do fine.
Love him as a person, but he is pretty hard of a professor. His exams are very hard. Try getting another professor, he should be you rebound.
He's a decent guy, just his lectures are sometimes difficult to follow. It's very easy to struggle in this class, Exams ARE a Challenge! Half the points on exams are from multiple choice and the other half are from 3-4 short answer. One wrong and kiss a good grade bye
Love him as person, not crazy about him as a teacher. He is really helpful if you go talk to him but it is easy to get lost in lecture. He goes very fast and it is hard to keep up in your notes. Exams are hard, but really understand the concepts behind things and you will be okay. Really hard to get an A in this class.
He's a nie guy, but unless you want to have to teach yourself, steer clear of having him as a professor. He doesn't answer questions clearly either.
He knows the material that is taught really well. There are weekly quizzes in his class and weekly online homework assignments. Exams are TOUGH! Get ready to have no life if you want to get an A. It is doable and has been done. The book: best friend. Always available, funny guy, easy to irritate though. I actually enjoyed this class. Good luck!
I was surprised to find he made changes to the structure of the course and made it doable for the average student. You will need to teach yourself some orgo, as there is not enough time to cover everything in class. Winchester is a nice guy, but he hates stupid questions. He expects you to read the book. Third test is the worse! Be prepared!
He is an incredible professor. SO nice and knowledgeable. TAKE HIM!! I promise you will not regret it.
Randy is a great professor. Very enthusiastic about chemistry which makes it easy to listen to his lecture. Will make you laugh. Randy is also very flexible with due-dates if you talk to him about why you need an extension. The course is curved which is nice. The down-sides are that he grades very tough on exams and there is lots of homework.
Nice guy, bad professor. His lectures are incredibly confusing. And his exams are brutal. If you want a good grade, you have to put a ton of effort in outside of class and teach yourself from the book. Find a different professor.
Randy is a super nice guy and is very enthusiastic about what he does. His tests are extremely difficult and are the majority of the grade. Be prepared to read a lot on your own time and be aware that the online homework and practice problems are significantly easier than the tests.
Winchester is a tough professor. Definitely makes you work for you grade and expects you to read through the chapters and do all the problems outside of class. His lectures are fast paced at times and sometimes he isn't very clear when answering questions. Exams are tough, make sure you study and practice A LOT of the problems from the book.
Winchester is a fantastic professor. He cares about his students and shows his knowledge in the subject is extensive. Exams are tough, but he definitely keeps students engaged and interested in class. I enjoyed the entire year of Chemistry with Winchester, and he definitely got me interested in a subject I thought I'd hate.
Organic chemistry is a pretty tough class to begin with, but Winchester understands that and is very helpful. His lectures can be fast pace and a little unclear, but the practice problems from the book that he assigns are very similar to the problems he puts on the test. He often gives extra credit to keep tests at a C average.
Great professor, knows his material well enough to explain in from different angles. Tests are tough, but it's Organic Chemistry so it's to be expected. He offered 15 points of extra credit, dropped the two lowest quizzes, and if your final exam was better than a test, he replaced the lowest test score. Amazing professor!
Randy is amazing. He really cares if his students do well. If you are taking this class, this information is stuff you will have to know for future classes and know well. So work hard! If he sees you trying he will do everything in his power to help you out. Helpful online homework + helps your overall grade. READ THE BOOK and DO THE PRACTICE Q's
He is a great professor and I really enjoyed his class. Organic chemistry will always be a super hard class no matter what professor you have but Dr. Winchester always had a positive attitude and tried his best to make it fun. I loved his class as much as I could ever love a chemistry course.
Randy Winchester was my favorite professor of all time. He makes organic chemistry very straight forward and his notes are amazing. If you really pay attention in class and do what he asks, you should succeed. The subject matter is difficult and requires a lot of time, but since you already have to take it, take it with Randy.
Professor Winchester is probably the best Chem Prof ive had at my time here so far. This semester was new because of covid and our class was hybrid. He moves pretty quickly and you have an exam every 2 or 3 weeksish but it only covers 2 or 3 chapters at a time. He really cares about his students and does what he can to make sure everyone does well
Professor Winchester was so kind, especially with all of the COVID stuff going on. The material for organic chemistry is obviously hard but I think he tried to make the best of it. When we would do bad on an exam, he would often offer extra credit assignments to boost our grades. I could tell he wants what is best for his students and cares.
So much material involved in this course and not enough time. Due to covid this class was turned into an online class with less lectures. This professor did everything he could to accommodate every student. He showed he really cared and spent as much time as he could outside of class to help everyone. Be prepared to practice nonstop!
Difficult class with a lot of material. Winchester really responsive and has pushed back homework and exam if students need and offered extra credit. Exams are not terrible and he tells you clearly what you need to know. He is also easy to reach outside of class and stayed in office hours as long as needed to answer all questions. 10/10.
He is so sweet and a good professor. Organic chemistry is already a hard class but he makes it not so bad.
Had prof. during Covid. The start was rough, gotta teach yourself for a few weeks, clear assignments, study well for tests, he can be flexible, records lectures. The last few weeks of class were online so we asked for more time on exams, he gave it to us. Caring but can come off as passive-aggressive. Answered questions and emails. Would take again
This guy is the bomb! Lecture videos are online, then you practice examples in class. He's a super fun guy that makes class enjoyable. He is very clear of his expectations, and there are no surprises on the exams. You have 5 exams, which seems like a lot, but only 2 chapters on each exam, so it is less content to memorize. He made orgo simple!
I loved professor Winchester for lab. If I was confused on anything, he would take the time to explain it. He made orgo lab wayy easier. Would definitely recommend him!
Dr. Winchester was amazing for 242. I was so intimidated coming into the class because I barely got 241. He wants you to succeed, and prepares you very well for exams. He is very reasonable, very accommodating, and WANTS to help you. He is very kind, and genuinely cares about his students.
Dr. Winchester is amazing! He is such a wholesome guy who gets so enthusiastic about chemistry and that made learning more about our labs so much more bearable. He is always willing to explain what we don't understand and is really accessible outside of class. Definitely recommend!
He is a really nice guy in general but as a professor, terrible. I never drop classes but he was terrible at teaching and was very unfair with grading. He's even admitted that he gets lazy grading homework and that's why people get different grades even if they have the same answers. I'm sure he would be better for a lab class but not lecture.
I loved his teaching style. Organic is definitely hard to begin with, but as long as you view the videos and take notes before lecture you will have an idea of what is going on. He's a great guy and I actually feel like I learned the material and didn't just memorize it. He is also great in office hours so don't be afraid to go to him for help!
Winchesters teaching style for me at first was a bit intimidating but after getting the hang of things and learning what studying habits work best for you, the class became a breeze considering its reputation for being an extremely difficult course. Actual lectures are done online in the form of videos so make sure to have good time management
Overall, great professor. Every lecture/homework assignment given served as a great study guide for the exams. The course is a flipped format, so you study before coming to class allowing for better consolidation of material. I highly recommend Professor Winchester if you are hesitant about who to take for Organic.
Was a great professor if lucky enough to get him, homework is due every friday along with a short group quiz. watch the videos before class and it is exactly like the homework and homeowork is very resonable. Study guides and problems from class is exactly like what he gives on the exams which are every three week.
Randy is the sweetest professor ever. He truly cares about his students and wants them to succeed. He posts practice exams, which are very helpful for the graded exams. A short homework assignment is due every Monday and there is a 2 point group quiz every Friday. If I could have him for 242 I definitely would have picked him.
Professor Winchester made learning orgo somewhat enjoyable. He was always in his office and available at almost every time of the day. He was more than willing to help you work through homework and lab reports. You can tell that he genuinely cares about his students and wants them to succeed. If I could take him again I would in a heartbeat.
Dr Winchester is genuinely one of the best professor I've ever had. Wants you to succeed, funny (old guy humor), and is just a great guy. It's a flipped classroom meaning there are recorded online lectures (30 mins a week with 2x speed). This allows for class time to be spend doing practice problems which are mandatory for success. Highly recommend
I loved professor Winchesters course, he is a funny guy who truly cares about what he's teaching. He always walks around to check on how everyone is doing and he truly cares about your learning. I would 100% take him for 242 if it was possible, I loved his teaching style and he gives you a lot of resources to learn.
Professor Winchester is a caring instructor who aims to make organic chemistry more manageable. Although the course can be challenging, he provides helpful resources like practice exams and is always available for extra assistance. Utilizing Unstuck study alongside the textbook can further support success in this class.
He is the best professor I have ever had, he made me enjoy organic chemistry. He uses a flipped classroom and his videos are incredibly helpful. This class was definitely a big time commitment but I've never had a professor genuinely care so much about their students. He was also very passionate about the subject and he has funny old guy humor.
Dr Winchester really cares about how you are doing in his class. He does a flipped classroom, so lectures were on blackboard, and you do worksheets in class. I highly recommend reading each chapter of the textbook and doing the recommended problems, because doing that really helped me in this class.
