humorous/approachable/reasonable exams/a good teacher
fairly easy, good selections
she is a very tough marker
hard to understand but after 7 years, I still remember her.
she is very narrow minded
Brutal class, boring, not useful and unfair with the marks.

she's nice but I ask her a question about the essay...no help at all
A boring class, and her expectations not clear. I wouldn't take another one of her classes, and wouldn't recommend that anyone else take one. We had a sub for a while and when she returned she bad-mouthed the sub. Very bad form.
I hated this teacher. She's so confusing and refuses to explain something if she mentioned it before. Run away!
Pain the butt - she claims its a second year course but its not! It's a second term course - god dammit i hate her and this class. if you have to take it i feel your pain, if you don't - DON'T

Ranjini is a good teacher, as long as you show up and do the work you'll get a B which is good in English. She explains essays very well her marking is quite fair. You have to do the work though, read all the novels..etc.
She seemed to be confused herself most of the time. I enjoyed her class at first but then she seemed to change her marking style halfway through. I think she needs some time off before continuing her career.

Class is fairly easy, read a couple novels, and one take home essay. I got a B+ overall and I got a B- first year, so her marking is pretty easy.
I found this course very easy and got a B+ when i only received a c+ in the previous english course. I think that she gave out a lot of bad marks in the class though. It depends on whether she likes your writing style.

Talks quietly... sit at front. Not 100% clear of expectations. Morbid humor. Funny. Fair marker. Do your readings. She really won't answer your questions if she's already answered them.... even if she talks too quiet to be heard in the back!!! :@
She is passionate about literature and it is infectious. She does have a thirst for the dark side of humanity, but i'd hardly call her morbid like the last people... she is very helpful and i am really enjoying her class.
think she was a very good teacher. in my opinion alot of people on this board want to cruise through this class without putting in much. Ms. Mendis was very passionate about her subject matter, which is nice for a change.
Ranjini is very helpful-she will make sure that u understand what the assignment is about-i missed a few classes and she would email me telling me more details about certain essays-the novels she assigns are easy readers-if u show up to class she is happy-ask for help when needed and she will luv u
Easy marker, when marking para's and essays. I think she doesnt really knows how to teach, or give a good lecture. She just goes over what's in the book and expect you to get full marks. Doesnt explain the material properly. Class can be boring. We learned more from the learning center than inclass.
She is an extremely hard marker. She doesn't clarify what she wants out of students, and then punishes them on essays for it!
She would not answer students questions, and she was not very approachable.
very poor teacher. She only wanted her own oppinion and wouldn't take yours.
Way too hard. You can seriously spend all your two weeks she gives you to write the essay for her and she'll still flunk you. Changes your word choices, random punctuation, and definitely already understand the MLA style before taking her.
For a first year course WOW! BRUTAL, she's a very subjective marker, if she know's your name and you sit in the first few rows you'll probably get a C+ B but otherwise definitely not a prof for first year students. Not clear, not helpful even if you visit during office hours. Don't even think about giving your opinion in class. GPA DOWNER
She is so hard and I don't understand what she wants from me. She won't have your papers marked in time for the next test, you can't see where your weak and need to improve for the next exam. She's not helpful or even a decent teacher.
I have had zero problems with any other professorsc but Ranjinis is useless as a teacher, and when she says that literature is up for interpretation, she really means HER interpretation! bring a thesaurus, because she will look for an exact word to describe something and wait until someone in class blurts it out(must be EXACT!)Don't expect to learn!
she has decreased my morale so down by failing me without a single supportive feedback that now i am afraid to take any other english course. She is horrible, i will make sure i dont ever get her gain. i am a good student in all other courses that im takin.
she is a very tough marker but she is a really good teacher!
Ranjini is a very good teacher. I really learn a lot from her and I like the way she teaches. She has a nice way in teaching. She is a really good teacher.
It's her way or no way. I use to love english and all she did was depress me. I got a good mark but only because I`ve always had good writing skills, not because of anything that she taught....because Ì haven`t learned anything about english from her. She needs to take classes on how to teach. She`ll hate you if you don`t come to class & mark u bad
Class time is a waste. Half the time spent watching videos of plays we are supposed to have already read. Almost all assignments are written in class and are expected to be perfect and proofread despite the time limit. Ambiguous essay questions are difficult to prepare for. Bad at giving tests.
Nice lady but pretty arrogant. Her view points seem to be the only right ones. Very unfair marker, expects alot more thene I expected from a first year class. Terrible and boring readings and pretty annoying lady as well. I got an A- at SFU English and somehow a C+ in her class. Try to avoid her if you can.
Professor Mendis isn't as hard or mean as everyone says she is;) She is very nice and will help you out if you ask for it.
Ranjini is a good teacher, I don't know why so many people are slandering her name. The teacher is not hard its the English language itself. Therefore you should give Ranjini a chance , and you should not base your decisions on the experiences of others.
Took her online class. Her instructions were not very clear and when you asked for clarification she would get mad at you. 4 major essays M/T and Final were 2 of the 4 essays you had to do.Instructions for the essays were very vague and not a lot of help was given. Was told she can't give "indv help". Does not give A's. not the best eng prof
Prof was very confusing. Said she wanted one thing and then marked you with a very opposite grade. I would not recommend her. She did reply to her emails very quickly though, but even her emails weren't proofread and sloppy.
English is a very subjective course, which is a simple reality. Once you get beyond basic grammar and MLA formatting issues, it's about how you form your argument and support it. Know MLA very well and you should be fine. She does lack clarity in her instruction, however. 1 Midterm (2 hour Critique Essay) and 1 Final (3 Hour Critique Essay).
Disappointed
She is rude, and judgmental thinks English 1100 is a 3rd year course. Don't take her class period.
Great online course and helpful instructor. She sent so much additional help through e mail updates and an extra website for grammar help.
Found her very helpful. Step by step instructions for assignments and additional help on e mail. Answered all my questions double quick
I had never read a full novel before this course but the novels and stories were really interesting and questions were easy to understand. Tough marker though.
Was nervous about taking English 1100 but I really liked her course. Has her material nicely set up and uses lots of e mails to encourage us to work every week and communicate with her.
Good online delivery. Interesting material every week presented well with lots of help. Gives helpful feedback.
She put in a lot of effot into marking our essays. Colour codes for writing errors so we know what to work on. Do your readings and weekly work and it won't be hard
Likes international literature. Her knowledge of literature is extensive and presents the material nicely with lots of additional links and info to make it interesting.
Feedback from assignments are fair and if you go over it, it does help.
I took this last summer and got a lot out of it but it was a hard course. She was good though.
I took her fully online course. Very nice course website full of great stuff. If you want to do well, you have a good chance with her.
Interesting course. Ranjini is a caring instructor. Expects a lot of "close reading" and details.
Before I took this course I didn't know Indian writers. She likes multicultural writers. You can learn a lot from her.
Professor Mendis is a very fair professor and she gives a lot of opportunity for improvement---she wants you to do well. Since this is a University course, you need to work to achieve a good letter grade---but if you do then you receive the grade you deserve. Prof. Mendis is very helpful if you are trying to improve in writing. Highly recommend.
Prof. Mendis is really fair. Her marking is very helpful, clear and thorough, so you always know areas on which you need to improve. She gives many opportunities for improvement should you put forth the effort. I would highly recommend her if you want to greatly improve your writing.
Prof. Mendis is really fair. Her marking is very helpful, clear and thorough, so you always know areas on which you need to improve. She gives many opportunities for improvement should you put forth the effort. I would highly recommend.
Quite a hard marker, I would not recommend this format of online for everyone. I would take her class only if you have STRONG writing skills to begin with. She does respond quickly to emails but at times you can feel very much on your own in this course in terms of learning, the wilhoit textbook is only a little helpful.
English 1100 is quite hard but Prof Mendis was a very good teacher. The course was on analysis and critique with summary, three essays, reading log, midterm and final. It was highly organized course with interesting readings and assignments. She emails extra information and reminders regularly, so you might miss something unless you keep checking.
Hard. Different from highschool. But she teaches well
This course needed a lot of reading, but literature courses are like that. Ranjini was very helpful and highly interactive. She sent e mails with extra information and also links to website with interesting useful stuff. highly recommend if you are interested in literature.
Very helpful teachings.
Ranjini is a great teacher! Intro academic writing is notoriously hard and she recognizes that, and does her best to ensure students' success. Yes, she is a difficult marker, but she is fair and gives helpful feedback and suggestions. I highly recommend Ranjini for ENGL 1100. You will be well prepared for further university studies.
I enjoyed this course. The literature selections were interesting. I discovered love of poetry. I would take another course from Prof Mendis hands down.
Found her to an extremely hard marker and not very helpful with problems. Tests were very hard and be prepared for group work (even being an online course)
Assignments were pretty straightforward. You really need to be a self-directed learner to do well in this course because it is quite tough. She gives good feedback, although I found the midterm and final to be somewhat difficult.
Ranjini is a very decent instructor, very hands on and responds to every question. She provides detailed instructions. Group work is all online and clear steps. Worth taking.
I found Prof Mendis incredibly unhelpful. Everytime I asked a question it seemed like I was bothering her and almozt like her response was very rude. You also have to read instructions VERY carefully as requirements are easily missed as the instructions can be quite wordy.
Prof Mendis was very helpful to me. It was a great course website - easy to follow. I learned a lot about academic writing.
I liked how this course allowed us to interact with others through the forums. So helpful to read other peoples answers and recognize if you are on the same page as them when it comes to understanding the literature. It motivated me to try harder when I saw how deeply others were analyzing work. Interactive activities made it not boring!
I found Ranjini to be less than helpful when responding to email questions. By the end it seemed she was almost annoyed with questions. She has high expectations that you follow instructions precisely which ensures you really understand what is being asked. A tough course, but I can say I actually learned to write a proper essay by the end of it.
Ranjini's step by step set up and great website gave what I needed to do well. She understood where we came from and gave extra information when we needed.
I loved the readings in this course. My favourite was poetry but she gave YouTube links to plays and that made it enjoyable and ralatable. She is a tough grader but you learn from her. A great course!
Prof Mendis gave clear and concise instructions and interesting readings to write assignments on. English 1100 was not easy after high school but it made it easy to write for other courses I was taking. A good choice and really nice teacher.
She gave what you needed to do well. Lots or reading required. She knows her stuff and is a good teacher, so you should take her.
I found this course extremely easy (probably since I am an English major). Read the books, follow instructions, work hard and you will be fine. Ranjini is nice from what I am aware of, it was an online class so we only contacted through emails. She was always receptive to questions and eager to help with anything I was struggling with.
Ranjini is a tough marker. On an assignment that was just answering two questions on a short story, her marking focused more on grammar and tiny details of your writing. She docked a majority of marks from this. Did not specify what she clearly wanted in the marking rubric. This feels more like a fourth year writing course than a read and write.
A lot of her instructions have spelling errors, as well as the short stories she provided. A first year writing course should not nitpick writing assignments as much as she does.
She is a tough grader but gives enough feedback on each assignment. The only thing that concerned me was the kind of readings she gave. I don't know if they are pre- decided by the faculty. But if not, every novel was a depressing one (Tragedies). As a university student, I feel I am stressed enough. I don't expect comedies but still all of them?
Prof Mendis is pretty easy going with the assignments, she let some of us post on the forum even after the due date saying we could do better. However she is a really hard marker. English isn't my strong suit whatsoever and she expects too much for an intro course
I was glad I took this course online because she gave lots of time for assignments and was understanding. It was a very organized online course with lots of help on her website. I wish we had more time than four months. It is not possible to change my habits in four months.
This was unforgettable , the novels she chose were so interesting that for the first time I read complete books. Wave was unbelievable, it made me cry and my mother too. I loved purple hibiscus too but brooklyn was a bit boring. Prof Mendis gave so much in her website that it was easy to write assignments and she was alwasy there to help.
Prof replies to messages quickly. Check emails often because that's the way you get info about assignments & what you need to know each week. Her marking follows the instructions in the text book. The writing handbook is very very useful so best to buy, & then you'll be set as long as you log in each week to see the course website & your email.
Ranjini's course was very helpful for my psych course. I learned what I did wrong and that helped and also the readings were so interesting. One thing is that she expects a lot of reading. If you don't read the textbook, then you are in trouble. Great course.
Definitely an interesting course with interesting material. She's very passionate about literature and change (it shows through the assignments she gives you.). However she is a very hard marker and will disregard content in favor of grammar. She expects too much depth for what she gives as a word count in the essays... But it was fine.
Wow, all I can say is that Professor Mendis has a heart full of passion and understanding towards her students. I did this course online, and although there was no face to face interaction she made me feel valued and important from afar. I am thankful for her constructive feedback and her willingness to pursue her students success alongside them.
She was wonderful, class was great, and I learned a lot- thank you Prof Mendis.
very Accessible, she was sweet and although the class challenged me the assignments were effective.
Prof Mendises short stories and novels were so interesting and relatable, her theme of journeys opened my eyes to my own journey. I feel that I became a strong writer. I feel more able to create good essays because of her great feedback. Great course!
Ranjini was very helpful, always on top of things. She helped me a lot and answered all my e mails and I appreciate how it helped me to set my own schedule to do my best. She gives lots of time for assignments and clear instructions step by step. I learned stuff I never knew about writing before. I really loved her style.
Grading felt like it was based more on her emotion towards the writing as opposed to facts.
She cares!!
Avoid her at all costs for intro to English 1100 ONL. Her requirements for an intro class are way too high. She marks first year work like its third or fourth year. Any other professor is simply looking for clear and coherent writing for an entry level English course... Ranjini is looking for master writers and grades work unfairly as a result.
I agree with the review below, do NOT take her for ENG 1100 Online. She marks incredibly subjectively, gives awful feedback, and is looking for absolute perfection in writing. It is incredibly inappropriate for an online instructor to send emails late Friday afternoon saying they do not answer emails on weekends when assignments are due Sunday.
I actually thought that Ranjini gave really clear guidelines and I appreciated her detailed marking grids. She showed clearly how the marks were given. She is a very conscientious teacher.
Prof Mendis was incredibly responsive and got back to me for every e mail. Her expectations were clear. There were detailed instructions for every assignment. I found her marking helpful and fair. Great choices of lit.
Prof M gave a good quality course. I learned about academic style writing and I am glad I took her. She presented the course week by week on the website with lots of help. One thing to remember is that the Wilhoit text is essential. She marks according to the checklists in it.
One of the worst English instructors out there. Marks essays and assignments really hard. If you'r not good at writing, I would advice you take any other prof but her. Made us read books that were about some journey and love or something. She's very rude if you try to ask for further feedback on assignments.
Prof Mendis gives unclear expectations and an extremely tough marker. The class average reflects on how bad in teaching she actually is. I never leave comments on ratemyprof but it really does feel as if she deliberately wants everyone to fail.
SAVE YOUR MONEY AND SKIP THIS PROF! She gives assignments with NO guidelines, so basically, you're on your own. Literally a waste of money because you learn NOTHING
She was kind and she gave loads of extentions. Not sure why the posts below. She was very clear. I say definitely take her.
I dont recommend Prof. Mendis. Im aware a lot of English professors are hard markers but she has very high expectations. Her grading is unclear and even asking for help is useless.
Prof Ranjini was very good. She gave step by step instructions and her marking had a lot of detail that helped me. I learned a lot.
Prof Mendis is a thoughtful, patient & considerate teacher who was really engaged. She made it easy follow her online instructions each week. If you read the instructions, you know what to do to get a good grade. Great course.
Very hard marker considering it was an intro English course. Feedback is very poor and when you ask questions all she says is check the textbook and that was her teaching. If you want a good grade do not take her. I did not learn anything in this course because she did not teach anything and it was a waste of money.
I agree with the comment below. I personally felt like I relied heavily on the textbook and online homework throughout the course. She only gave deadlines on her week by week "instructions." So you basically have to teach yourself. Take it with someone else if you want a good grade (I wish I did)
She would give "input" for your paper then contradict the information when grading. Worst prof. Not helpful at all when email. Doesnt want to help students and just suggests you go to leanring centre.
Her marking is so inconsistent! She gives you feedback for an outline, you take her advice and change your topic sentences, and then she tells you its "too wordy". She's condescending in her emails or if you ask a question. Unless English is your major, and you are an A+ student, don't waste your time with her, your GPA will suffer!
The worst class I have ever taken an absolute nightmare! She was an extremely hard marker. At the end of the semester gave me a poor mark. I decided to retake this course next semester with a different prof and I ended up with an A. Save yourself the headache and take this course with a different prof.
Prof Mendis's course was excellent and I learned to write academic essays better. You need the textbooks. They are very clear and helpful. Her detailed marking was extremely useful for me because I never had feedback like that before. She gives a lot to her students, which I needed. I highly recommend her as a prof.
Yes, she has high standards, but this course was interesting and I think useful for learning how to write better for the rest of our courses and when we apply for jobs. I followed the instructions and textbook as she directed, got feedback, and got good marks. People who post terrible ratings obviously didn't.
She always gave how your assignt will be graded list and was super clear in how she marked. I have not got my final grades still but I think I have done well. My sister also took her courses last year and she did well. Miss Mendis is a very good teacher and you will learn a lot. I will take her again.
Wasn't what I expected. I mean, the assigned stories were very interesting and relatable (tragedy stories are very eye-opening!), but the essays were difficult. Prof. Mendis' feedback was very subjective + very nit-picky about grammar over content. RR forums were also hard to do. I'm considering retaking this class with a different prof next year.
I took an English course with this professor for my Fall 2020 semester. I highly recommend this professor to anyone that is looking to take an English course at KPU. She has a lot of passion for teaching English and wanting her students to succeed. Every assignment given by her was always given well in advance before the due date.
Along with the assignments she provides multiple links for helpful resources that contributed to the assignment given. She is very clear and good at explaining what she expects for the assignments. She provides in depth feedback for every assignment for a student to correct mistakes for the next assignment. She is a very dedicated professor.
This professor has constructed her course structure in a very manageable way for students to succeed. Some assignments given by the professor such as Reader-Response Forums (RR Forums), known as your own responses/view point regarding a piece of writing that the teacher has assigned, really opened opportunities for students to bump up their grade.
If you have taken an university level English course at KPU and felt like you struggled. I highly recommend this professor, her courses are very oriented in helping her students succeed.
I actually choose a W before the first essay was due, because I was so frustrated with how everything was presented. She didn't teach anything at all. She would just say read xyz pages, then reference the wrong pages, give broken links in moodle, use youtube videos with errors, and more. I felt cheated. This is not an example of good education.
If you're taking this course directly out of high school, expect a turbulent start. Mendis is a good professor who gives good feedback and has a relatively quick email response time. She is a tough marker, but that seems to be all English professors. I had taken this course In September of 2020 online and it has helped me become a better writer. .
I have been a good student with a gpa of 4.0. However, taking this course has really brought my gpa down. Ranjini was not a good instructor. I found her very rude. Her feedback wasnt helpful and assignment guidelines were not clear. She was not easily reachable by email. The class was online so the communication wasnt clear from her side.
I had heard that English credit courses were notoriously hard, but I was pleasantly surprised by doing well in this literature course. Her choice of interesting readings made it an adventure because I like reading. The website was chockablock with helpful info. Very good instructor.
Ranjini is a genuinely nice prof. The stories in this course were very interesting and I absolutely loved The Namesake. She gave a lot of help for writing skills too, though it is not part of the course. I loved the detailed point form instructions for every essay so I knew what to write. I learned a lot from her.
I like these fully online classes so it's easy to do the work in my own time when I'm not at my job. Mendis gave assignments a few weeks ahead with all the info needed to compelete each one so not overwhelming. If you have any questions, she's online most days so answers quickly. She gives way more feedback than other profs, so I learned a lot!
Dropped her class after the first paper. I received a middling grade, which is unusual for me. When I asked for help to improve I was told that "she didn't have time for my questions and to take ENGL 1100 again" (in which I had received an A). Poor instructor.
Excellent online course on cultural lit. Instructions posted regularly with youtube and audios and extra materials. She gave clear guidelines on assignments and posted essay samples. That was helpful. Her marking was like other prof's I have had, so no surprise there. Great teacher.
I am an English major and have taken many English courses, Ranjini was one of the toughest markers Ive ever had. She was unfair in her marking as her instructions didnt make sense, she was very little help, and she was very condescending in the communication she had with students. Wouldnt recommend.
Of all the English instructors I have encountered at KPU, Mendis is by far the worst. She neglects to teach the course material and relies on others' lectures to "teach" the class. Her instructions are vague, her grading practices are wildly inconsistent, she is painfully slow to respond to students' questions, and her responses are incoherent.
I enjoyed her course and the unusual stories from other cultures. I learned how to learn because of the fully online teaching. I will take her again in a heart beat.
I really don't understand some of the posts here bec Prof Mendis yes corrects mistakes and you have to work for your grade, but I learned and my writing got better. And i loved the stories we had to read. I knew what I had to do each week, and she emailed back when i had questions. I felt good when I got a good mark because it meant something real
Ranjini's Women's lit course (3360) was super interesting and relatable. Her feedback was clear and I learned how to do better. She is super organized. I ended with a high grade because she gave high marks for forums at the end. She was great and I loved her course.
Do not take this course unless absolutely necessary. The professor gives unclear feedback, returns assignments late, and criteria is very misleading.
The class was challenging, but if you stay engaged and use tools like unstuck study for study prep, you can do well. The prof gives detailed feedback to help you improve your writing. Overall, a worthwhile course.
Uses performance on 1st exam to grade all assignments until the final. We're given 3 hours to write an exam, 2 weeks for assignments. Writing that takes 2 weeks is going to be better than the 3 hours one. Got accused of plagiarism multiple times because the writing "differed from exam." Wasted so much time redoing them just to keep being accused.
Improved my writing skills by the end of this course, beware that the 5 assignments she does give to you throughout the semester are marked thoroughly. You need to ensure you do good on those assignments otherwise it'll bring your grade down. I did amazing on the final but bad on the assignments because my writing wasn't as skilled as it is now.
