Awful teacher... is very unclear in her lessons, her exams are virtually impossible, she grades really hard on her papers, and you have daily quizzes on the readings(the readings are really hard to understand). Do not take her class, and if you get stuck in it, GET OUT AS FAST AS YOU CAN!!!!!!!
plan bad teacher
STAY AWAY AT ALL COSTS. This is new, and she doesn't realize this is a business school. Her tests are way too hard, and she grades hard on papers. Her lectures confused the ablsolute s*** out of me, and she wouldn't let you have an opinion. I withdrew because it was gonna kill my GPA.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!! stay away at all costs, quizzes almost daily on very confusing readings, midterm next to impossible, and very rough grader on papers, i should've withdrawn when i had the chance, don't make the same mistake... DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!
I heard the class was hard but than it turned out to be lot easier than I thought - aced the midterm. Lot of reading but if you go to class and hit office hours or just email her, she helps a lot with essays and makes it easy to undersand.
Self admited socialist, anti-globalist and very critical of America. WILL lower your grade if you do not agree with her opinions. Nice lady if you meet 1-1 but she does not know how to teach a class. 50% of my class dropped. More interested in INT then PH. Check the SETS and stay away.
Gets good conversations going with the class. The mid-term and final weren't hard. Just spend your time on the two papers. She is incredibly helpful if you see her during office hours and she likes to see you show interest in the topics discussed. Great professor, take her.
DO NOT TAKE!!!! She is the worst teacher I have ever had! Her quizzes are too confusing, it doesn't matt if you do the reading or not you will still do horribly! She should be fired!
She is nice. Not alot of work at all! jsut reading with some quizes but you don't even need to do the reading to pass the quiz. She is a little crazy but the class is fun, there are alot of class discussion of the material.
the class was a lot more interesting than i thought it would be. the first unit was really difficult, but it got better. i think the ratings here are a little harsh on her. she is def. crazy, but she grows on you. she's really sweeet and so crazy and funny but she doesnt mean to be.
90% of your grade is based on 3 things- 1 Essay, which u get to choose from about 4 topics, the mid-term, and the final. I only worked 3 times the whole year and got an A ..the other 10% is participation..its philosophy u cant be wrong so say anything.... easy A
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASSS!!! I hated it. Just three grades, midterm being extremely hard. I would not recommend her to anyone.
it is not the easiest class i've taken. The first part was very hard and i didn't do well in the midterm. Still, my grade was not that bad--3.3. Decent grader. The topics were very interesting, though. I learned a lot.
she talks so much during class....not one sentence without saying right. she gets really annoying after a while. Her readings don’t really make sense either. if you can keep away from her!!
This class is terrible. Not only are the readings basically in a foreign language, but she can't even properly explain them. Three grades...midterm, final and a paper. To give you a clue about how hardcore she is.....she learned english by reading philosophy books in college. Yeah, get out while you can.
She is kinda demanding. A lot of readings. Detailed exam questions on EVERYTHING. But I do think she is fair and I did learn a lot.
Boring class. Puts so much effort into participation so everyone just keeps repeating the same thing. Readings kind of boring. Only 3 grades: Midterm, essay and final. don't have to go to every class or do the readings but the class is still really boring. She's nice though. She's just very opinionated about her political beliefs.
So, she was hard. she was kind and fairly understanding but was much to opinionated. She expressed her desire for you to disagree with her if you did, but if u tried to tell her something she didnt think was right, she wouldnt have any of it. only 3 grades, and basically your whole grade was determined by the midterm and final...hated the class.
Course elements: daily readings, one paper on assigned theme, presentation, midterm, and final. She really makes one use their noodle so if that's not your forte, do not take her class. You will not do well just by showing up, but this is definitely a class worth taking.
Professor Herr is a talented and fair teacher. There is no doubt, this class is tougher than others, but your grade is a direct factor of how much time you put into it. You will find that the lazy/dumb students will look for excuses or blame professor Herr. I'm not brilliant and i got a 3.7 She's worth taking.
Not a great professor but not the worst. Won't accept your opinion which is funny for philosophy, but she is a fair grader. 3 grades: 2 tests and a paper. Tests are matching and true/false.. if you study you will do well. Doesn't care about attendance the last few weeks of class either.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFFESOR!!!!! she's a very hard grader and she doesn't care about you. It's extremely hard to understand her at class, she's very confusing and very opinionated. I really don't think she's a good proffesor, she thinks everyons wrong except for her.
Altough I heard that this class is hard, I sailed through. 3 exams are easy if you study her studyguide questions. essay is somewhat difficult, but she was very helpful when I visited her office. she also lets you rewrite to get a higher grade. The topics were also interesting. I'd recomend her!
tests are easy and only one short essay requirement. some of the readings were difficult but her slides are clear. she used movies a lot and they were interesting. i enjoyed the topics and felt that my eyes were opened about a lot of things.
Worst professor I ever had. She has her own take on current events that makes you think that she hates America and especially corporations - I can't believe a business school like Bentley would hire her. Also, she just plays movies all the time, and never helps you out. It was a huge struggle to get decent grades; she made me hate philosophy.
Awesome teacher!
Do not take this class, her teaching skills are sub par and don't you dare have the wrong opinion
Actually painful to sit through her class. Can't stand listening to her broken english. Is just overall a useless and pointless class.
I don't understand the harsh reviews. I tried getting out of the class when I first saw her reviews. I'm glad that I didn't. She's pretty good, and it's not a very difficult class. Do the weekly readings, and you'll do fine. I really don't find her opinions all that bad. I know that it's a business school, but you have to accept reality sometimes.
If you love being wrong, not having an opinion, and doing loads of pointless work, then yeah, take this class. It is actaully Hell sitting through her class.
She's not the greatest teacher and the class is boring but the class itself is easy if you pay attention during lectures. Make sure you participate though because she actually keeps track of who does and doesn't and it makes a big difference to your grade.
Not difficult at all. Plus the required books really helped me understand the US and its economic situation. It was a great class!
she is not bad at all. not sure why some rated her so harshly. may be they didn't pay attention in class? one thing that i appreciated about her is that she was very fair. i thought she might grade my essay harshly because i'm a libertarian, but i got an A for my essay. she's cool.
I liked discussions about animal rights and the death penalty. She was cool with different opinions. The text about consumption was disturbing but eye-opening.
The class is good if you like discussing about controversial topics and interactively participate in them. However, you have to read a lot and she tends to be biased and that really grinds my gear. You can get an 3.7 or above if you pay attention, but i would take another professor if i could
hard readings at the beginning. discussions about current topics in the second half. you need to read the material before class to get the quizzes, it's not a piece of cake. critical thinking is what she emphasized and i feel i learned something from this course.
Very nice teacher, she gave us everything needed for all tests and quizzes. The final paper is rather easy and she reviews it and gives advice to improve the paper. She gives everything needed for a good grade. Barely any homework besides some small reading pieces. Overall, an eye opening class.
Don't take this professor! Her voice will make you want to kill yourself and hearing her say right? at the end of every sentence will drive you crazy. She is never wrong and will always put down your answers instead of trying to accept them. Worst professor I've ever had.
She's awesome! I enjoyed the class!
Ranjoo is an amazing Professor the stuff I learned was amazing. I highly recommend her since you will learn material that will enhance your understanding of life in ways you never thought about. geo333
I learned a lot about current topics and about the moral theories that apply to them and I have to say I was surprised that my positions on so many of these topics changed as the semester went on. These changes were definitely for the better.
Not a difficult class to get a 3.7/4.0 in but definitely not an enjoyable class. Personally did not like the way she ran her class and she is very strict on how she grades. Not a professor you can easily go speak to outside of class.
She has difficulty understanding a student's opinion during class discussions. I think I would have learned more if I had a different professor. It might be the language barrier that makes this class painful to sit through, but it is still painful. There is not much homework, but you should definitely understand the articles well.
Very difficult class
You can get a lot out of this class if you read and prepare for the class. Quizzes are perhaps the hardest part. Exams are easy and I got very helpful feedback on my draft.
She cant speak english. She gives awful participation grades. She never answers your questions. She wont help you if you go see her. She is painfully boring. DO NOT TAKE HER
she emphasizes critical thinking. the first part was a bit abstract but later topics were interesting and relevant. i had difficulty with the first part, but visiting her office and talking helped a lot. she's nice. midterm was easy. to do well on the daily quiz you have to do the reading. i disliked group discussion because other kids don't think.
i found her AAFs rather hard at the beginning, but as i did more of it it gets easier and it does help me understand the readings better. she's not easy, but her classes did help me become a better thinker.
Herr is cool, genuinely wants her students to do well. Have to do somewhat challenging AAF's, depends how good you are at this stuff. But the 2 exams arent bad, just have to study. Read for 20 min after every class as next class is centered around that. You get out what you put in with Herr, and would recommend if you want a low stress class.
So much homework. I have a 3.6 GPA thanks to her class in which I got a 2.7. If you are a hard worker you'll do fine, I just think the material is super boring and she expects you to know absolutely every single thing that she teaches.
Tons of abstract readings and assignments. Midterm and final. She wants her students to learn and listens to feedback. She knows many students dislike her class which is sad. Still, avoid. Getting through her lectures can be the struggle. However, the 2nd half of the semester is a bit easier to grasp.
There is way too much work. There are a lot of different forms that can be confusing and take up time. We got a lot more more compared to other philosophy classes. She does offer extra credit which is easy to get.
Do not take this professor. Way too much work, much more than any other philosophy class. Clearly expresses her liberal views, favors those that agree with her views. Questions you greatly if you hold a conservative view. Strict grader, cant understand her when she speaks. Makes you want to fall asleep every class. Avoid class at all costs.
i think other kids don't appreciate her because she makes you work hard and because she is foreign. but if you work hard, it is not that hard. she really cares that we learn critical thinking. I was a bit skeptical at the beginning because of these harsh reviews, but realized that she is very fair and reasonable. i learned a lot!
She is very passionate about Philosophy and tries to make you feel the same. There is ALOT ALOT of reading but it's ok if you don't fully understand it because the whole class time is one big discussion over the readings. Online quizzes and forms for homework but nothing too bad. Just put the work in and show you care and you'll do great.
DR Herr is truly passionate about her work and about the course. Very very liberal and gave me and other students a hard time for conservative view points. Arrogant at times. She will appreciate you if you do the readings and participate, very accessible outside of class via email or meeting. Writing responses tricky at first, tests are fair,
she gives clear guidelines on how to get a good grade. if you work reasonably hard, then you will ace it. along the way, you become a better thinker. I appreciated what i learned in her class.
Shes nice. Daily reading with a small quiz about it, a few reading responses. Means well, very passionate, but I don't find the class interesting. PH is boring to me so I don't enjoy it.
Professor Herr is extremely passionate about philosophy and critical thinking. However, she is condescending, arrogant and inflexible in terms of office hours when she requires you to meet with her regarding Reading Responses. She does not allow bathroom breaks during her class and will call you out for skipping or not participating.
Prof Herr is a decent choice for PH101. Not ridiculous amounts of homework, tests arent killer, as long as you pay attention and participate its an easy 3.7-4.0. Very easy to find at her office hours, or even other times. Ok feedback on mini essays she calls reading responses. Class is boring if class doesnt engage, so try and participate
Took her pre-COVID, and every class someone always fell asleep during her long lectures. She uses PowerPoint slides that she goes through way too quick at times. She loves students who participate and definitely is passionate about philosophy. Not a "must avoid" professor, but there are better ones to take if you're looking for a good grade.
Expect to do group work every single class and it's no fun. Very awkward class if people don't participate, relies on participtaion too much. confusing teacher. BE prepared for tons of readings for homework and mini-quizzes. overall a tough grader for essays. I do not recommend it unless u like participating in class or like to do tons of reading.
Professor Herr is someone who you can tell is extremely passionate about critical thinking and philosophy. However, unfortunately, this does not really translate into actual teaching skill. Her class is heavily reliant on participation, and its pitifully awkward when she laughs when you get a question wrong.
Before every class you must complete a quiz, make comments on a perusall reading, and do the assigned homework that she emails 500 times after the previous class. She thinks that Philosophy is everyone's one and only class.
Prepare yourself to read massive readings after every class with annotations, quizzes for homework, the group work quizzes every class. The lectures in class are boring and gets very awkward when no one participates. She does not like when you do not agree with her views. Only benefit if you can get homework done for other classes.
Class is the same thing every time. In class quiz every class with a random group she creates. Always a lengthy reading (that you must annotate) and quiz before class. She gets mad when no one participates but does nothing to engage the class at all. Laughs when you get an answer wrong. Couldn't keep a class awake to save her life.
One of the most politically charged professors I've ever had in college. Does not like if you have opposing opinions to her and will question you heavily for the wrong opinion. Most of the readings and such were about politics rather than actual philosophy. Also makes the class significantly more difficult with class assignments and papers.
She's so bad I want to give herr a zero. But that's not possible so I give herr a one.
Herr gives the same homework every single night (In class activity, perusal reading and online quiz). Her class is about politics. I have no problem with politics or her views, I just fail to see how it relates to class. Abortion, gun control and media sources are all part of the course. I wouldn't take the course unless its life or death.
Professor Herr is the definition of what it means to be a control freak. Will heavily question you if you give an answer with opposing political views to hers. Far too much work. She is a sweet woman when it comes down to it, but she needs to leave her opinions and political views out of the classroom.
Pretty brutal class. Avoid if possible. Extremely lecture-heavy, and homework is the exact same thing every class. If you do get this class, try to participate, as that's about the only way you'll get anything from the class. Incredibly politically charged professor.
I took PH 320 with Professor Herr. Lots of reading, but to be expected with a PH class. She lectures most of class and acts uninterested in your comments. She grades tough and isn't very clear on her expectations. There's a grade distribution outlined in the syllabus, so getting a 90+ is extremely challenging. Loved the class material, but not her
I need to do Professor Herr some justice here. I took her last semester for my first semester at Bentley and her ratemyprofessor rating drastically misrepresents her as a teacher. She is an extremely fair, albeit tough, grader and is politically unbiased. If the course subject looks like something you will be interested in you will enjoy the class.
I was definitely surprised by the low ratings for Professor Herr because I absolutely loved her and PH319. She is very willing to help you if you need it and it was a comfortable space to talk and participate in. If you just do the readings and participate the class is easy. There are no tests and only 4 writing assignments that aren't long at all.
She's a super nice but awful teacher. Grades so hard and loves to hear herself talk. You will never get out of her class early because she uses every last second of class time. Participation is heavily encouraged and it's so boring
If you want to wake up and constantly drag yourself do weekly perusal assignments, meaningless discussion on a tyrant ranting about what her political beliefs are and only hers, please be my guest. I sat through this class listening to her tell other students "okay" and proceeded to give off her belief. This class will be a grueling A if you dare.
I also feel that I have to give professor Herr some justice here. Although VERY politically charged I thought she was very sweet and graded very fairly. She is willing to give out A's if you put the work in and actively participate. Most discussions were intellectually stimulating and I actually took away good ideologies from the class.
A lot to get into but in summary, this professor is such a tough grader.
Sincerely, not bad at all. We had a 15-ish page reading before every class, so twice a week. That's all we did in the semester, read before class, discuss the reading in class, and repeat. We had 3 essays 2 pages long the whole semester. Easy grader. Lectures are a little boring but not too bad. Take her.
Has no lenience for submissions, lectures all class every class. Would not take again. Strict due dates with no room for extensions, extremely hard grading.
I love the environment of the class, and how she facilitates it. Even when my classmates and I aren't being as responsive in conversation as we could be, she always manages to flip it around and gain our interest while still professing.
The professor taught political philosophy about global matters. it was a bit depressing but she opened my eyes to things that I never thought about. My sense is that many others don't agree with me. I suppose if you don't want to learn about such things or think about them, class can be difficult.
I don't know why everyone rated her so low, she is a very nice professor, and her class is very interesting. There is no big exam in this class and homework is really easy (2 questions) but a good amount of reading. Class is more political philosophy/race related. No typical midterm/final, just 2 papers which are 300 words minimum.
The professor is kind and enthusiastic when it comes to political and ethnic philosophy. The workload consists of two readings per week, with two short-answer questions per reading and two reading response papers throughout the semester. Her class is mainly lecture-style with a mix of group work.
PH315. 3 tests that aren't difficult if you take notes on the slides beforehand. 2 Film reviews and a final paper that are not a heavy lift. Overall, a good choice for this c and p category.
Very difficult grading and long boring lectures. Tests are very difficult and pre-class quizzes are graded very harshly.
