This class involves NO hands on art work. You read a VERY long text book. Going to lecture is CRUICAL! Exams are some what difficult but an extra credit paper can be done. I don't recommend the class unless you are very interested in art HISTORY
Lots of reading and very boring lectures. In the end, you do learn a lot, but it sucks if you're not interested in art history.

Raoul is awesome. The course is hard. He was brought in to teach it because it had become a blow off course for non art majors. Everything comes from the lectures. If you don't hear the lectures you won't pass the exams or the course.
He makes really bad jokes
No Comments
He is mean to some people for no reason and that is pathetic.
Cool guy, very laid back personality, but demanding on projects...which is a good thing if you're a serious art student. Don't half ass projects or he will know. If you're late on a project still turn it in, he is pretty uderstanding.
Its very important to go to the lectures and take good notes and hang onto slide lists. i never once opened up the book but went to every lecture and got an A- in the class, just be sure to stay focused during the lectures and you should have no problem.
sometimes comes across as judgemental, but i think he just likes to push his students to their ultimate potential.
Seems like a cool guy, straight forward class.
Very imformative lectures
Oh Raoul
lectures are very boring. doesn't make class interesting at all.
Raoul, brings forth a wealth of knowledge for a student to learn from and you will learn a great deal in his Art100 class if you take the time to read the material. Do not expect to pass his class if you are not willing to put forth the effort to read the material. With Raoul's real-world experience as an artist himself he helps you understand ar
Not very good at covering the information he expects students to know.
I found the class really interesting and you will learn a lot if you listen and read the book. The book can get boring at times but reading it when you are suppose to is the only way to do your best in the class.
The class was not what I expected at all. Only take this class if you are more than mildly interested in art. I thought it was boring and he doesn't do much to make it not boring besides showing us some whacked up videos of people pretending to be monkeys. Read the book, which is something I never did.
Raoul says himself that he sometimes thinks in Spanish, and has to translate his thoughts to speak to the class
go to class and take notes and you should do just fine
Great!
Most boring class I've ever taken. Don't bother buying the text book, if you attend class you'll be fine.
great teacher!! very informative and makes class fun!!
Deal is an utterly terrible professor. DO NOT TAKE ART 100 WITH HIM. Seriously -- for your own good -- stay far away from any of his classes. The man is just insane.
He's a really good professor. But make sure you go to class, that way you won't have to do tons of reading and catching up.
it is easy A class. You just have to go to the class and take notes so you will be good. The book is important also to do good on exams. His exams are very easy,,, so no worries :D
This is a fairly easy class if you actually go to class and take notes- although the material can be a bit bland. The book can help but is not really necessary if you pay attention in class. I'd say Deal is a decent professor, and his exams are pretty straightforward.
Really boring at first but gets somewhat interesting later on. Felt like a lot of questions on the test were worded weird and resulted in lower test scores. Not a bad class but nothing too memorable
Really boring at first but gets somewhat interesting later on. Felt like a lot of questions on the test were worded weird and resulted in lower test scores. Not a bad class but nothing too memorable
This professor sucks I can't listen to him talk about this boring art crap for 75 minutes. He makes this class so boring you just watch the clock hoping time goes by faster. His exams are pretty straightforward but he words his questions in a tricky manner.
Deal conducts the class in a welcoming fashion. Work is taken seriously, and we are encouraged to create well crafted pieces. A hard work ethic is the key to success and if you put in effort it will be gratifying. Not only an excellent professor but also a person, who cares about his students well being in and out of class.
Was a very poor instructor. He rushed through his PowerPoint slides and never seemed to explain things! Definitely was passionate about his career and understanding of art. It's hard to pay attention, boring lecture.
Be aware that it's a clicker lecture. Don't buy the textbook, you won't need it. Just take good lecture notes and go to the reviews. Exams can be on the most specific details, so study up! Really, don't miss the lecture unless absolutely necessary. Boring at first, but lectures get more interesting as you get into modern times.
This was literally the worst class I have ever taken in my life. The professor just kind of rambles, his guest speakers are useless, his paper rubrics are insane and misspelled, and he just comes across like he can't be bothered to actually work out what he's supposed to be doing. Avoid at all costs.
It's not hard stuff and the exams are easy enough, so if you want you can suffer through for the GERs but if I could go back I wouldn't take this bogus class. It's three hundred ignorant, privileged, uninterested kids listening to a guy talk about art and history in the most boring way possible. Attend the review days, any other day don't bother.
He shows up to class tardy and unprepared. His understanding of the class is questionable.
Easily the worst class I have ever taken. For the sake of your sanity, stay far away from this 75 minute lecture about art history. I'm not sure he even knows what he's talking about. Worst professor in the world.
the most boring class i have ever taken.... gotta be really attentive and must take notes to pass
Hands down the worst class I have ever taken. Yet unnavoidable for GER reasons. Deal does nothing to make the class interesting and has a very boring teaching style making it near impossible to take good notes due to the slides not giving much information. I would not reccomend others to take this class.
DO NOT LISTEN TO REVIEWS OF ART 100!! Sounds like they were written by students with no interest in art in the first place. If you get the chance, take a studio course with Raoul! Hands down one of my favorite teachers at UWM because of his commitment to community involvement and genuine interest in getting students involved as well. Very Helpful!
The reviews of Art 100 are quite accurate. Deal takes an interesting topic and makes it dull. He's smart and I don't doubt his credentials but if you need to fill an art requirement I would stay away from this class. All the teaching credit should go to the SI Nicki for making the class clear and understandable. Without her I wouldn't have passed.
Terribly boring class, don't buy the expensive book it's a thousand times harder to read than to listen to the lecture. He seems interested in the subject but dulls it out and is all over the place in his lectures. Don't take this course if you can get away with it.
Lectures not mandatory but clicker questions for extra credit. If you go to SI every week and go to SI exam review you will get an A in the course. Niki is the best! I did no work week to week and never used the book and got an A
Do not take this class! Seriously I'm so glad it's over. Deal is an awful professor and horrible teaching style. He doesn't even know what he's talking about! Half the time what he says is not entirely right. He does offer extra credit though. Overall this class is not worth the time. Each day I waited seemingly forever for lecture to end!
Hated this class with a passion. This guy is the worst professor ever. He's extremely boring and its hard to understand what info from his lectures is important. That being said this is a very easy class if you go to the SI every week and do the extra credit. Watch out for the tests they are worded tricky and don't waste your money on the textbook.
This class is extremely boring and Deal has a terrible teaching style. He also words his tests in a weird way that can cost you incorrect answers. I would not take this class. However, as long as you do any extra credit offered and go to the SI sessions there's no reason not to walk away with an A
DO NOT BUY THE USELESS TEXTBOOK. It's a 75 minute lecture that feels longer than my 3 hour night class. You'll think you're prepared for the exam and then BOOM, he puts things on there that aren't on any of your review sessions that he only talked about once and never covered again. save yourself from the agony.
By far one of the worst professors I've had in my entire academic career. His tests are worded differently which will lead you to mark an incorrect answer. His lectures makes no sense and rambles on for 75 minutes. The required aesthetics paper was extremely hard. The SI reviews are helpful and would recommend it to anyone struggling in this class.
I don't understand how vapid and unappreciative of history you have to be to think this class is really THAT boring. I'm not trying to sound pretentious, but if you have ANY interest in art and culture this class is absolutely fascinating. The exams are pretty easy if you actually take notes instead of just playing on facebook through the lecture.
This class terrible and almost comical how bad Deal is. He does not explain things clearly and the lectures are very hard to listen to. I was interested going into this class but not even that could help it's monotone dryness. It is very easy as long as you go to the SI. Don't buy the book or email Deal I did a couple times and he never responded
Overall I loved the class. There really is no need to buy the book. A HUGE suggestion would be to attend the SI classes. In those SI meetings the subject matter is so much easier to learn. Also pay attention to guest speakers. He has a tendency to throw 5-10 questions about the guest speakers on the exams.
Class is extremely boring!! Went to almost every class, took great notes and went to SI every week including the exam study sessions. Highest grade i received on an exam was a C+ with countless hours of studying. Studied right off of the exam review. Felt like the exams were questions Deal never talked about or topics he never went over!
His lectures involve pictures and him talking, so make sure you listen closely and write fast in order to get decent notes. Easy to pass the class with a C or B if you don't want to put in any work outside class. If you want an A, you need to do the extra credit and read the text. Also, not very helpful when you ask questions.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER. Mr. Deal goes through slides very fast and makes it almost impossible to take notes. You do not need the book for this class, I had the book and it wasn't very helpful. It is art history class, I took this class thinking it will be fun and interesting but it was NOT. You will learn more from the SI (NIKI) than Mr. Deal.
Easy Art Gen Ed
worst class ever. Lectures are incredibly dry and boring, not worth going to but he counts participation. He goes through slides too fast, and doesn't explain them clearly. I don't think he actually knows what he's talking about 95% of the time. Do not take this class.
There is no material that you can study from reliably. Professor is very cold and not responsive when you ask for help. Absolutely flies through the lecture powerpoint at Mach 1 leaving you there with with a tiny fraction of the information you NEED to know. This professor should seriously be fired, worst class I've taken in my academic career.
Raoul Deal is one of my favorite professors I've had at UWM. He is an expert on community art and teaches important material. He wants to help each student succeed and is available for extra help when needed. I appreciate how genuine he is in all aspects of his teaching. He's also an amazing artist! UWM is lucky to have him on their staff.
I found this class to be a little challenging because of the huge class size and the material. It was difficult to memorize all the material for the tests. You definitely need to focus on his lectures, take great notes, and study. Also he is not the best professor to talk to.. I would suggest finding a better one.
First of all, I went to all of his lectures. I thought they were interesting, and although others mentioned they had difficulty keeping up with his lecture speed, I found the speed appropriate, and had no problem keeping up. The tests are weighed heavily in this class, so prepare for them. There are many opportunities for extra credit also.
He was a great teacher and leader for our class projects. He assigned a lot of readings and we wrote reflections - for a reason. Honestly, he framed how I approached architecture - community design in mind. He was always there, even now years later, when I had requests for help or direction. He has a lot of connections and respect for people.
He was a good professor, easy class if you pay attention and take notes!
Overall, he gave great lectures and I learned a lot. I found him a bit unapproachable with the large lecture setting. Important information is mostly said verbally instead of being in the powerpoint. Utilize the TAs and SI sessions if you have them. I highly recommend the SI sessions if you're a slow note taker/learner. Very helpful!
Don't buy the textbook- I went the whole semester without using it and still received an A. His exams can be tricky but they are fair. Take notes online using the powerpoints and review sheets he puts on D2L. Go to lecture because of clicker points and the daily drawing moments. Not the best class but not the worst.
Deal has the most boring lectures and flies through them. His tests can be difficult but all of the study guides are on quizlet. Take a different class if your major isn't art or else you will hate your life.
If you attend class and take good notes then this class is not all that hard. The review classes before the tests are super important, as that information is most of the test. But a pretty easy gen ed art credit.
Raoul is the best teacher Ive ever had at UWM. Do not listen to anything spoken badly about him on this website. Most kids at UWM are small minded, complaining kids with an overload of excuses. Raoul is the best hands down. Iv taken 3 classes with him purposely. He cares and is thoughtful.
Lectures are very boring but you have to go to get important information. The professor is monotone and doesn't really do much to make class interesting. I didn't take away anything past the basic information we were expected to know for the exams. The most interesting parts were the guest speakers.
Easy class. If you show up and get the mandatory attendance points, you'll pass. If you want an A, then always watch the exam reviews posted online. I did buy the book but never used it. There is a required paper and an extra credit paper in this class but they're easy enough as long as you go to class and listen to lecture.
This professor put pictures on slides for your powerpoint and the only way to get the information is to go to class. The professor is very monotone and doesn't make the lecture interesting.
Really tough class for a non art-major. Also the content is difficult to process and you really have to work for a decent grade in the course. The content kinda seems all over the place and not in any specific order, making it difficult to follow along. If you are a non art-major I suggest you not take this course.
Average prof. Come to the lectures and you'll pass the class easily.
Professor Deal is the perfect person to be the representative of UWM's art school to students whose majors and minors have nothing to do with art. He makes lecture as interesting as possible. If you show interest in his class you will see his appreciation and passion for the subject and for students. Very kind and caring, friendly, overal great guy
Hes terrible.
As long as you are responsible and actually attend lectures like you are supposed to you will be happy with your grade. Also, there was more than enough extra credit, whether it was a paper or discussion board. Also, I never bought the book and I still got an A-. Additionally, he's a cool dude, introduce yourself.
Listening to Professor Deal attempt to put a sentence together in his recorded lectures is as close to being tortured as I've experienced so far. Each test covers roughly 5 lectures, and each lecture takes 8 pgs/1-2 hours of typed notes. You're only graded on tests, so you better take those notes. You're given 40-45 seconds to answer each question
Professor Deal was okay at first responded to all of my emails with questions and was very invested in teaching, however, I missed one quiz and I had an A in the class, I asked if I could take it and he said no even tho I mentioned I was very busy working full time, during a global pandemic and was taking care of my family. Not understanding at all
I took art 100 during the pandemic so it was entirely online. Essentially if you watched the lectures every week, and did the little 5 minute drawings he required you passed. Every exam was open note open book. Offered up to 9% extra credit for a few easy assignments. After the first class he cancelled all online classes, just had lecture videos.
I thought he easy to listen to and his lectures covered the topics clearly and the exams were easy because of this. The book was not required nor necessary to pass with an A.
If you're not an Art major don't take his class. You're only graded on tests so if you're not a good test taker good luck. His lectures throw a ton of information at you and he doesn't highlight any key information/concepts so preparing yourself for a test is very difficult.
Questionable learning style he teaches also this is not a class where you just draw art be aware this is ART HISTORY you will be quizzed on topics as well as that will make or break your grade, also dont drop after quiz 1 as some panic after, create a group to help eachother out. overall not bad but definitely not online survey, had to be helped.
After getting my minor in art history I thought this would be a breeze. Lectures move fast and have too much content/subjects all at once. Maybe I just don't like modern art but who knew a 100 class would be 10x harder than my 500 level math based class. I know you need an art class, just do not take this one. Steer clear, folks.
In 2022, I took Raoul Deal's online art course. After being the victim of a violent crime, I explained the situation to him, and he offered an extension to an assignment. However, when I missed a class (not long after the incident) he gave me a failing grade without warning. I only found out months later. Be aware, he wont consider personal crises.
