Extremely full of himself, but is actually a fair grader. Study lecture notes and you'll be ok. Unfortunately 2nd semester his quiz/exam questions were very vague. And any answers you give him during semester aren't *ever* elaborate enough =/
i disagree with the other comments people left. hes honest with students and very helpful
actually a very fair grader, I got mostly 4.5/5 or 5/5 on IDs. Dr. Abbruzzese was an impossible grader. His questions on objectives are tough, though. Completely full of himself, but is a great lecturer!
Solid teacher, knows his stuff, and can speak an old english accent better than anyone i know.
Impossible to please in regards to papers, claims there are no wrong answers then rips your papers apart, classes consists of dry conversation. turned me away from the english major.
Very fair and nice.
He is possibly one of the best professors I've had in English. I've always hated this period of literature, but after taking this class, I both understand and appreciate it so much more. Don't get me wrong - he is challenging and makes you participate, but he has made me a much better English studet
What does he want? But he is very helpful.
While he is very intelligent and a decent professor, he is not very helpful with the students and you dont get the inpression he wants you to do well. Not very flexable and doesnt mesh well with the rest of the team.

Frankly, he's one of the best professors I've had. Helpful, informative, and a great teacher of writing.
BEST PROFESSOR EVER! encourages class discussion, expert on what he teaches, and gives reasonable assignments. fair grader and eager to help you improve. genuinely cares about his students and is always available and happy to give advice. one of my favorite professors, highly recommended!
If you would like a drop in your GPA then go for it. If, however, you do not enjoy random discussion and the world's hardest grader then stay away at all costs. Ruined my semester
If you want to succeed at P.C., DO NOT take this proffesor. Although his intentions are good and he tries to start stimulating conversations, his extremely high expectations are IMPOSSIBLE to reach. He is an extremely hard grader and it is difficult to feel any amunt of accomplishment in this class.
I found the class interesting, there were only 3 papers. He's a tough grader and his paper topics are always extremely vague. SO FULL OF HIMSELF!!!
By far, worst teacher I've had at PC. Will always find something wrong with a great paper. The lectures seemed the same for the same Shakespearen plays we were reading, and he rushes through everything.

The WORST professor I have ever had. Completely unfair, unwilling to help, doesn't care at all about his students. Expects perfect papers, even though he says he doesn't. Hot-headed, totally ignores students who contribute in class. More concerned with discipline than with what we're learning. Doesn't recognize that we too have our dignity. JERK!!!
Whoever wrote the review below this one is either lying or totally gone. Shargel is the absolute cruelest, most selfish tyrant of a professor PC has ever seen. I'm not talking worst in recent years; I'm talking since PC was founded, no professor has ever been so inherently evil. Sat literally seething every time he spoke, which was far too often.
The man is a genius and truly cares about the material and his students. He is easy going and allows the class to focus the lecture/discussion around what the class finds interesting. My highest praises.
knowledgable professor, & accomplished. he has strong opinions, and the workload is never crazy until it comes time to writing your papers. expects a lot out of his students & the papers are difficult because they are strangely formatted. the topics he gives for papers do not compare to the richness of the material covered in class
Dr. Shargel is great, but his tests and papers are really hard. His classes are discussion based, and he lets you talk about the topics you liked in the reading. A lot of reading, which is a must, but do-able. His papers are oddly structured, which make them hard to do well on, but he is really smart and the discussions are interesting.
Dr. Shargel is incredibly smart, which makes his seminar usually pretty interesting. However, he only shows a lot of enthusiasm for literature and barely any for the other disciplinary's like history. He is a really tough grader, especially with papers. He does want to help his students, but usually tears your paper apart when you go to see him.
Great Professor who gets excited abut teaching. Tough to get the A, but grades based off of improvement.
I actually really enjoy Dr. Shargel! His ultimate concern is our understanding of the material and our success in the course. He makes fair quizzes and provides a stimulating seminar conversation, and is pretty easy on us. Do the reading and you'll be fine!
WORST TEACHER EVER! Avoid at all costs.
Shargel gets a bad rep, but his Shakespeare class was definitely the best. You have to do the reading, but its not too bad. Discussions are really interesting and he knows a ton. Hes very invested in class input and debate. A great class overall, Shakespeare done right.
Great teacher and person. Cares a lot about his students. Learned a ton in his class and had fun doing so.
Dr. Shargel is awesome! I really learned a lot in his class, especially about how to write good papers. He really cares about his students.
Work hard. Participate in class. Go to office hours. Then you will do well.
Great professor! Good, interesting classes and you learn a lot.
Awesome class!
Dr. Shargel was one of the hardest professors I've ever encountered. He really makes you work for the grade you get. He really cares about his students but if you're looking for an easy A to cover your intensive 2 core requirement he will not give you that. Overall learned a lot but would not take again.
Every day you had to read the New York Times. He says it takes about an hour which is true but you need to read every paper every day, monday-thursday. It makes you well informed, however, it can be stressful because he will give you pop quizzes on the information for that days paper.
Great professor and great class! He really helped me learn how to write great papers! Definitely recommended!
Recommended!
I hated him the first couple of weeks but ended up tolerating him. Expect to really work for a decent grade. Makes you read the newspaper everyday with pop quizzes. Although I hated going to his class, I have definitely become a better writer for all my other classes. Might have been worth all the pain and suffering.
Great class! Learned a lot. Taught me to be a better writer.
Imagine the human form of a migraine, that's professor Shargel. Literally has zero redeemable qualities and is insufferable to be around. The man thinks he is a brilliant scholar, too bad he is nothing but another out of touch teacher who thinks their subject is infinitely more important than everything else.
There's reading, but it's good. Good discussions too. Do the reading and you'll learn a lot!
Dr. Shargel taught me a lot about studying literature. Because I took his class, I did well in DWC too! Lots of good tips about reading and writing. And class discussion was really interesting.
Good prof, always interesting, though you do have to do the reading. Didn't regret taking him twice.
This guy loves what he's teaching, which I guess is somewhat entertaining, but he is really hard. A few essays, which he sometimes "doesn't have the ability to grade" if he feel it is unfinished, pop quizzes on the reading, and some other assignments. I took it as my writing II credit, but it was not worth it.
Important to do the reading for this Writing II course, and you need to turn in papers, comments own essays helpful. Reading good and class pretty interesting.
The worst class I have taken at PC. He is very boring and all you do is read the New York Times and write papers on it, my grade was exactly the same on every paper. You have to wake up early every day to get a hard copy of the NYT or you have to buy it because he makes you bring it to class and will give pop quizzes on it. Hard to get above a B-.
WORST TEACHER EVER! NEVER TAKE HIM! You will not leave his office hours without crying. Your grade will not be higher than a B. You have to pick up The New York Times every morning and he will yell at you if you don't, and give you pop quizzes on it. He'll tell you how to correct your paper and once you do it, he will mark his own corrections wrong
Dr. Shargel is definitely an interesting teacher worth taking if you like the subject matter he is teaching. He can be a wicked hard grader and can be pretty tough with feedback. Overall, if you show you care about the class, he will take note and that does boost your grade a bit. Make sure you do the reading!
This teacher makes my life a living hell. I want to cry everyday before class. He "helps" you with your essay... then says his own corrections are incorrect. Make sure you look at his shoes when it rains... all I am going to say. Also be prepared to get a -5 on a pop quiz if you didn't read.
Dr. Shargel wants you to read, participate, and try to improve. Your final grade will reflect your those three things. I had three of his classes and realized the papers do not necessarily decide what you get. His paper grading is tough. However, he will give a page work of feedback, single-spaced. He really cares, so take advantage. It's a rarity.
There are hours worth of reading every class with minimal gain from doing so. Save yourself the trouble and do not take this class, especially if your not strong in English. His essays are impossible to write and require thinking way beyond a 200-level course should require.
I did not enjoy Dr. Shargel's class. He expected us to do a crazy amount of reading and often gave pop quizzes that were pretty difficult even if you read the material. We only had three papers (two graded), but they were graded extremely hard and his comments did not help me to improve for other papers, but he did teach me how to work hard.
Shargel is a weird dude who will only like you if you participate. He assigns an absurd amount of reading and assigns difficult quizzes usually once a week. He was furious when my class did not do well on the first paper and made us all write them again from scratch. He'll ask for your opinion about the reading then tell you your wrong
Shargel is a character. An incredibly tough grader, but if you put in the effort, make the corrections, and show him you're trying he'll appreciate it. He doesn't necessarily give you a grade based on your grades, but what he thinks you deserve. Very smart man, but not very open to differing opinions. Interesting lectures if you're a fan of ENG.
Incredibley difficult. Unless your essays are written by him, it is impossible to do well. Going into his office hours just make you seem more lost.
After the first class, I was anxious leading up to every class. He demands participation, then shoots down literally anything you say. He often makes students cry due to his condescending nature.
Very condescending during class discussions and when it comes to written assignments good luck. His comments on essays are most of the time longer than the actual paper (thats literally not an exaggeration). Expects you to think way beyond a 200 level course. Reading he assigns is ridiculously long and spark notes won't help. Avoid at all costs !!
DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH HIM. He made my first semester of freshman year awful
Hands down hardest grader I have ever had. The class is terrible - he is so picky and particular about what he wants. Your work will never be up to the standard no matter how hard you try. Feedback given on papers are a full typed page in length and tear your work to shreds. Completely destroyed any confidence I had in my writing abilities.
He's a nice guy in class and the class itself isn't that bad. The class is all discussion but there are pop quizzes that can be kind of hard but if you read you should be able to do well. He is a very tough grader on essays, so if you are not a strong writer I'd stay away from his class. It's hard to write the essay to his exact specifications.
nice guy and actual class isn't bad. papers are a mess. he is a ridiculously hard grader and expects thinking/writing way higher than a 200 level class. don't expect over an 80 on papers no matter how many times you go to office hours. he also expects extremely analytical thinking to a point it's absurd. avoid if you can.
Good class, reasonable reading, and great discussions. My writing improved and I learned a lot.
Discussions give you a chance to think in a different way and I learned a lot about how to write. Great class!
Shargel is tough but tbh only take him if you like to learn and like to be challenged. My writing improved so much and I can write paper so much faster after this class. His papers are short but specific so there's no room for fluff. He wants to see your progress so your final/final paper doesn't have to be good but has to show progression
I've never had such little respect for a teacher in my life. Professor Shargel is the absolute worst. Even as a Finance major, I found his Lit 175 class to be the most challenging class I took all 2nd semester. He is very belittling and has no respect for his students, which is obvious through the grades he gives his students.
Good and helpful. Doing better in other classes because I took him.
Dr. Shargel is a good prof who cares about his students. Helped me a lot!
I learned a lot in this class. You have to do the work, but it's worth it. Discussions were pretty interesting.
Please avoid this class at all costs. I would personally regard myself as an advanced writer and have never had so much difficulty in an English class in my entire academic career. You will feel as if you are pursuing an unattainable goal of doing well and meeting this professor's standards. It appears that he grades based on personal preferences.
All through high school I excelled in English and constantly got A's, and then Dr. Shargel destroyed all the confidence I had with my writing abilities. He is so picky about what he wants to see in his papers, but is very unclear when explaining directions. His class gave me so much anxiety and he is a very harsh professor. would not recommend.
I have never had a teacher who was less helpful to my education. Dr. Shargel was pretentious and looked down on anyone who disagreed with his point of view. He also expected students to be experts in a field which the course was not supposed to include without properly teaching the material. His comments on papers are never constructive
Dr. Shargel makes you work for the grade. Very particular on what he wants for papers and other writing assignments. Every day before the class I would feel anxious because he is very unpredictable. Read, read, read or you will not do well on quizzes he gives. He expects the most from his students and wants them to excel, just need to work hard.
This class gave me the most anxiety ever. He would rip apart all of my papers no matter how hard I tried and how often I would go in for help. He made me cry a number of times after giving me feedback to my face.
Shargel is a great prof. You have to work but you'll learn a lot!
If you are looking to have fun in class, learn something, and have good and HEALTHY discussions... GO ELSEWHERE. Raphi is not the place to be if you are looking for any of the above things. If you get him in class.... get the heck out of dodge, trust me.
Professor Shargel is hands down the most caring professor I have ever had. I had heard his class was challenging and I admit I was a bit nervous at first, but I soon realized that the copious comments on my writing and the verbal feedback were simply the result of someone who was truly invested in making me a better writer. And it worked.
This prof is a gem. Not easy but worth every minute of work. Opened my eyes to what it means to be a writer.
I learned a lot from Professor Shargel. His classes are really terrific. When the reading was difficult, seminar really helped me understand the material. I'm a much better writer because of Professor Shargel.
Great books, great seminar, great prof!
Do not take him unless you're literally the greatest writer of all time. No matter how many times you meet with him it doesn't help at all. He just says your wrong and gives you advice on how to fix it, but when you take his advice and ask if it's any better, he says no that's wrong too. So unless you enjoy constantly being rejected, avoid him!
Shargel is highly analytical and is a tough grader. Nothing you write will ever be up to his standard and even if you ask for help you still won't be good enough. As an English major, he destroyed my confidence in my writing abilities. He is condescending in-class discussion and shoots down any creative ideas one may have about the text. Pls avoid.
I learned more about writing in this class than in any class I've ever taken!
A great prof! He really cares about you and leads very interesting discussions. Wants to hear feedback from students and respects your opinion. I used some of his writing tips in other classes and my grades improved!
Don't take him. My friend just spent a whole class with him and came back crying. He didn't even give him a grade for his paper.
Great readings and great discussions. Shargel is a good man and really knows his stuff.
Professor Shargel wants his students to succeed and can identify effort. But, it seems papers, especially theses, will never be up to his standard. He can be unclear in feedback at times. Strive for an A and accept a C+ or B on papers and focus on participation. For English, it is light reading, but read carefully. Some quizzes are tough.
I found it nearly impossible to figure out what he wanted me to write about. I went to office hours to correct essays but found he would just repeat what he said in class, which was never helpful or insightful. He would tell you what he wanted you to write and then tell you it was completely wrong when you did it.
Clearly had his own opinions already when he asked the class to discuss the books we were reading, if we didnt share his opinion he would subtly imply we were wrong, even though it was an opinion. One of the harshest graders I have ever seen on papers, never gives you clear instructions, just repeats himself over and over with little clarity.
If you care about your GPA don't take him. He has a specific way that he wants things written and gives no example. He also gives a lot of readings and if you don't read or find a good website you won't pass the pop quizzes. The open class's are tough too and he is overall just not nice and will make you feel like you're dumb.
Great class. Learned a lot
I really enjoyed this class. The reading was interesting and I learned a lot about writing good papers.
Awesome prof. You have to do the reading, but it's good stuff. Doing better on my papers because of him.
Prof. Shargel is one of the HEINOUS professors I have ever had. He simply only cares about what he thinks is right. He will never help you out if you missed class. He feels his class is the most important thing on earth since sliced bread. His voice is nauseating and makes me have a headache for at least three hours after his class.
While I am sure Professor Shargel is not an awful person, he is an awful professor. Nothing is ever good enough, I have lost a lot of confidence in my writing because of him. He will not listen to what you share with the class, he is the only correct person in the room. He never says anything good about your writing. Do not take.
Awesome professor, great class! I feel more confident about writing papers.
Great professor and great course!
I wanted to like him so badly, but I couldn't respect his huge ego. During seminar he basically just talks the entire time and when a student participates he will either dismiss their idea or talk at them. His pop quizzes are on super specific parts of the reading and he makes it impossible to do good on the papers, he just gives the same feedback
When it came to essays it was actually impossible to please him, literally everyone I've talked to has had some issue with his grading. He will find an issue to pester you on even if you follow instruction to a T. I truly don't believe that he can accept when people have different opinions surrounding literature (which is subjective might I add).
I loved having Dr. Shargel for Lit175. He forces you to think outside of the box, and as result I believe I have grown tremendously as a writer. Participating in class seminars will help your grade a lot as well. There are quick quizzes at the beginning of class on the reading and are pretty easy to get 10/10 if you do the reading. 10/10 recommend
Awesome professor and awesome class. Interesting discussions and helpful. Dr. Shargel really cares about his students.
I have never met anyone with a larger ego than this professor. He is incredibly condescending and rude. He thinks that he is God's gift to earth. By the way he assumes everyone else's opinions are wrong you would think that he wrote all the novels himself. He thinks he knows the books better than anyone else and his opinion is always right.
Professor Shargel has high expectations, but engaging with his teaching style can be rewarding. The readings and pop quizzes are demanding, so staying on top of the work is crucial. unstuck AI was a helpful tool for my study prep.
Although Dr. Shargel is nice personally, I found his class to be very challenging. I have found more often than not that my work was harshly graded. More often than not, I felt like my ideas were seen as stupid or I was not able to truly get my point across without being questioned or discouraged.
Shargel is an extremely harsh grader. No matter what you edit, your paper will not live up to his expectations. The pop quizzes were challenging and detail-heavy. When contributing to the discussion in class, he will always shut down your opinion. You do not do writing practice in class, which is hard when writing for a demanding teacher. Good luck
Hy. Po. Crite. If you signed up for his class, get ready for him to contradict himself, give u a pointless final, him to show his ego and just give u a hard time. He said he doesn't care if u don't show up or turn in an assignment, but then 5 mins later he said if u miss one assignment, that's an F for the semester. DO NOT SIGN UP FOR HIS CLASS.
He is hard to please. Participation will save you in this class. Every single class is circle discussion. We never do anything else. Most of the quizzes are reasonable but he refused to ever post a grade and when I asked what my grade was he said he had no idea. It's his way or the highway.
He has extremely narrow criteria for film papers, which he didn't make clear until after the first two (of three) papers were already turned in and graded. Even then, he says a lot of what he doesn't want, but doesn't give students the tools to succeed and learn what he does want. He just wants you to write exactly as he would have written it.
For the actual classes they are super fun as you just bounce ideas off each other and have great discussion analyzing the book, but for his writing assignments and some of his quiz's there is just no way to succeed. The papers must be written exactly how he wants or he'll just mark up your entire assignment essentially calling you dumb.
Do not take this Professor. His grading is extremely harsh and he is impossible to please. He thinks he's always right.
worst prof i've ever had. it's literally his way or the highway. his comments and feedback make no sense. if you meet with him he doesn't tell you how to succeed. never gives anything higher than an 8/10. classes are painful to sit through. do not take him.
1. make sure u speak in class 2. the stories are not that bad so READ bc he gives pop quizzes (all answers must be in complete sentences) 3. I don't think I've ever met someone more passionate about literature
If you want no joy in your life, take this class. I have truly never dreaded something more in my life. His grading is unfair and makes no sense, it's based on however he feels in the moment. I would absolutely NEVER take this class again, it was one of the most miserable experiences of my academic career.
