For a class that I was scared of taking I instantly felt at ease once I entered the room. Great teacher, really funny, young and super helpful because he is so easy to talk to. I learned a lot in this class and loved to go...suprisingly. TAKE HIM!
So nice and easy to talk to. Makes you feel very comfortable. Engages everyone, informal yet respectful class experience. Would for sure take a class with him again :)
Mr. C is super hip and awesome! He makes everybody feel comfortable and creates a fun environment to perform speeches. It is a very easy and relaxed classroom, but you learn a lot through the process. He is very helpful and although you need to go to class, it is something that I always looked forward to. Take him if you can!
If I could give Mr C. 100 chili peppers, I would. Hands down the sexiest teacher I've ever had. Very easy-going, sweet and passionate about his job! ...Oh and the class was pretty great too.
By far one of the best professors if not the Best I have had so far. He really makes you feel at ease and he loves his job, if I ever have a chance to take another class with him I will. TAKE HIM -Plus he is really cute
I'm currently sitting in his class right now and he is seriously such a sweetheart and a super surfer hipster. He rides his bike to school and enjoys long walks on the beach. His class was amazing and i had a great time with all my other classmates. HOT. I LOVE HIM.
If have the chance to take Mr. C, jump on it! He's pretty easy and super helpful! Also, he's really hot and a little bit of a hipster despite what he may say...Take him!
Mr. C is super entertaining. H eloves to play music during class, and is always available to help if you need it. He's a pretty cool hipster and also probably one of the hottest teachers on this campus. Take his class, you won't regret it. If you do the work, you'll get an A
Mr C seemed really awesome at the beginning but later on, he was rather inconsistent and irrelevant. He was late with posting grades and sending out prompts to the students and was very rude to students when answering questions. Pretty strange how different he came off to be at the beginning. I don't think he sold himself correctly.
I was really excited to take this class to become a better speaker but it was an utter waste of time with Rashad. He is unclear about all assignments, his class had no textbook but had page numbers on the midterm, his final wasn't fair and his little assignments don't have real rubrics. Never again will I take a class with him
Class is composed of 6 minor speeches, 3 major speeches, midterm, and final. The last 3 speeches hes nitpicks every single detail till you want to poke your eyeballs out!! Overall helpful professor in terms of helping you overcome stage fright and becoming a better public speaker but you have to work hard for an A!
Mr. C is pretty cool and lectures are made as interesting as possible. Probably one of the better IS301 professors. He kind of takes a while to post grades and his instructions can be a bit vague. He is usually available after class to help, but sometimes he sounds annoyed when you ask questions. 92% for an A, but that's the department standard.
He is a knit picky of presentations and a tough grader. His instructions can be confusing at times and acts like he doesn't care, aka DGAF. Hard to get an A but a B is very possible if you put in the effort.
Very tough grader, hard for A, B with a lot of effort.
Professor is by far the most difficult grader I have encountered. Difficult to get A's or B's on presentations and papers. ALOT of group work! Barely lectures and midterm and final are long, tedious, and difficult. For a class about common sense when getting a job, this class is not so straight forward.
4 easy quizes, 2 GEM quizes, 2 email assignments, resume with cover letter, solo presentation, group presentation, midterm, final. Sounds like a lot but it didn't feel like it. Mr. C is clear about what he wants and is helpful. I took this class at OCC, this was 10x better. messed up on the midterm and still got a B. Easy B, A is very doable
Always looked forward to this class. Such a cool guy! Lectures are helpful, never boring. Stickler about due dates/times but is SO helpful at office hours, the reason i got A's on assignments so make sure to take advantage of that. He really cares for his students in general, all the material is super applicable and only a midterm+final! TAKE HIM
Comes off as real chill and easy going . However, he lets the class take a hold of discussions & everyone gives their input of what THEY think certain concepts or models are all about which he never clearly defines. Exams are completely different from what the discussions were about. PLS rethink taking him. You'll regret it.
Beware of this teacher, sells himself really well at the beginning of the semester. It's not due to: his tough grading, expectations on group assignments, 70 question tests, ambiguous instruction, and rubric on grading. Lectures are brief skims over chapters. He expects you to be detailed as the book. Attendance is graded.
he's cool. Not too hard but not easy.
One of the classes that I wouldn't dread going to. His classes are set-up as half lecture and half individual/group work. His grading rubric may seem strict and you can't just send in a "rough draft" for assignments, but doing the assignments can boost your grade even if you do poorly on the 2 tests. But overall a fun class.
Wasn't just busy work. Helped me get my resume in order. Taught me how to be a professional. These skills are needed for any job. Take him.
Overall, he was an okay professor. He is a really tough grader. Comm 130 is supposed to be an easy GE class, but he graded quite harshly. There was a total of 4 minor speeches, 3 major speeches, 1 exam, and a final. The exams were based mainly book based so reading is required.
I dreaded attending his lectures. Gives us two useless Grammar exams without any study guide. He's not approachable, although he makes himself out to be. Study guide for both exams weren't very helpful. Exam questions are vague, and some questions aren't even in the book. Basic class, tough grader. 9/10 do not recommend. Grading rubric is a joke.
I would definitely take his class again. Currently finishing up the semester with him now. The only thing that tripped me up was remembering to do the online homework since he doesn't remind you to do it in class. 2 exams and group projects! Take him! Easy B to get. In order to get an A in the class you need a 92% or higher.
This is a great professor. He is an extremely tough grader so stay on his good side.
Professor C is chill but not. Try not to get on his bad side. Here's some tips: Know your manners. Knock before entering his office & don't interrupt him. Print out your drafts so he can edit it. Read/skim & do hw Arrive on time to avoid deductions on grade The class is worth 1000 points so do extra credit to make up points -Good luck
2 tests, 2 presentations with reports , weekly online hw, in-class assignments so must attend, extra credit by attending workshops. Not a hard class.
His lectures are very interesting and he knows what he is talking about. Reading the book and doing homework online is mandatory. Group assignments throughout the whole semester. Prepare to study and put in work but learn a lot at the same time.
I had his 8 a.m. class, and while it was early, he still made his lectures interesting and engaging. He does in-class group assignments, one large group assignment, and a personal project complete with a presentation. Loved his class, very approachable and helpful. Makes you work for your grade, but you learn a lot. Very valuable information!
He's a really tough grader. Need 92% for an A, I had 91.6% and he gave me the B. A LOT of homework online. You'll learn a lot about writing emails, making claims and also has a 6 minute individual presentation. Overall good Professor.
Overall, the class wasn't terrible, but I'd look for another IS 301 class before taking this one, there are probably easier ones offered. Be prepared to do a lot of work. Don't buy the actual textbook, just buy the access code. There are 2 presentations, one with a group and one individually. There are 4 grammar quizzes, 2 grammar exams.
Mr. C is a good teacher. He's pretty lenient on grading. If you follow directions and do everything he asks then it's really not that hard. You do have to learn grammar on your own but that goes for every BCOMM class at CSULB. One individual presentation and one group project. The group project you have to promote the bike share program on campus.
Don't get on his bad side. If you do he will mark you down for as many things as possible. His rubrics are pretty subjective so even if you follow it closely you're not guaranteed to get all the points you deserve. If you have the opportunity to not take his class, go for it.
Really funny. I felt like he didn't grade everyone as equally though. Test are on the book but you dodn't really need to read everything. participation in class matters
There are a lot of assignments but manageable. Need online code for HW and midterm and final come straight from it. 2 grammar exams and some quizzes which you need another book for. He is actually a pretty easy professor just pay attention to details. 1 solo project/presentation and 1 group project.
By far the worst teacher I have ever taken in my life. He is very rude and no where near understanding. Exams are doable but extremely hard so study a lot. He does not like to answer questions. He is often late to class but expects you to be on time. He has so many gears going at once projects online homework etc. Very hard to pass. Do not take
The most fun class I have taken in CBA. He really cares about his students and wants everyone to succeed. There is no other professor that you should take for IS 301. I learned so much from this class as well.
super chill prof. gives quizzes about once a week but they are super simple I passed every quiz without reading the book because he goes over it during the lecture. his lectures quick. we got let out early 90 % of the time there is about 6 presentations but only like 1 is formal they are all super chill presentations and he gives time to work
Great professor. We had one individual presentation and one group presentation in addition to grammar tests. The assignments in this class prepare you for your careers after college. As long as you pay attention and do your work youll be fine.
Captan has to be one of the most frustrating professors I've ever had in college. For a person who teaches (and grades very difficultly) how to write emails, he never seems to respond to any of the ones he's sent from students. His charisma is heavily outweighed by his ego and frankly, doesn't seem to care all that much about his students.
Amazing professor. ALL business comms class are heavy on work but assignments are reasonable. There are two presentations. This class is super helpful for our future, Mr. C just makes it better!
Really tough grader. Gives vague feedback, even when pressed for more. Kind of plays favoritism, doesn't seem to like it when you ask questions. Easy C as long as you do the work. All business comm classes are hard, his feels exceptionally difficult. Online quizzes, only in-class tests are grammar tests. Don't miss class.
In my personal opinion, I believe he was very discriminatory. I worked very hard for a good grade, yet many of my speeches were given very low scores. Although other students who did not do as well and were caucasian received very high scores, regardless to work. Very passive aggressive, and I hope he doesn't treat any one else like that.
He's a tough grader, but all IS 301 profs are. One thing that really annoys everyone in the class is that his assignments are VERY VAGUE. Good useful lectures applicable to real life scenarios. It was nice that presentation attire was business casual whereas other classes had business professional. Overall he's a chill prof and would recommend.
Professor C is a nice guy, but he is probably one of the toughest professor's I've had in college. I remember spending hours on his assignments and still not getting the grade I wanted. His lectures are very interesting but his feedback on assignments is very vague.
I don't know why he doesn't have much good reviews but my experience with his class wasn't bad at all. There were a lot of assignments in the beginning but they were manageable. Just keep up with deadlines and you're good. A huge chunk of the grade is from 2 GEM exams, 2 presentations (1 group and 1 individual), and a research report. Best prof!
Really fun guy. 3 GEMs and presentations and team work. Be careful of who you have on your team because the transfer students are not responsible and will pull you down. Follow assignments and attend class.
He is a great professor! Its not that this class is easy its that he knows what he is talking about and he teaches it well. You pick your group in the beginning of the semester and you work with them on everything so choose wisely! 100% recommend this professor! Trust me, theres a reason no one drops his class
You have to take this class if you're a business major and let me tell you in advance its going to suck. However, Mr C is probably your best choice when it comes to this course. He has a pretty clear grading criteria and gives good feedback. Pick a good group because you will work with them all semester. Few speeches, and some reports. Solid choice
Professor C is a Great professor took him this spring and I really learned a lot and I enjoyed his class. I highly recommend him. Make sure to do all of your H.W on time and do well on the quizzes (easy) and you will do fine. Multiple extra credit opportunities, Gem exam was a little hard and the report was time consuming but all in all great prof!
I loved Mr. C! After getting put into lockdown, Mr. C was the only professor I had that listened to the students' feedback and accommodated. He is truly caring and cares about your mental health! The assignments may seem like a lot, but just don't get behind. He teaches valuable life lessons that'll help you improve your professional skills!
Took this class with Professor Captan during COVID so everything was online, but it was easily my favorite class and the only one I genuinely looked forward to attending. This class is so helpful in teaching professional biz communication, and Captan taught it very well. No exams. Most other assignments are required by the dept. HIGHLY recommend!
Every IS301 class at CSULB will have a tough grading scale. It is not the professor, it is the department. This class gives a lot of assignments. Study for the GEM because it will either help you or break you. No exams and two projects - one individual and one group. He gives good advice for professional development but doesn't reply to emails.
He is very rude and condescending. If you don't follow all of his instructions perfectly you will get graded hard for it. There was no test in the class however there is a big GEM test which is grammar that is a huge part of your grade. However, he doesn't teach the grammar and focuses more on how he wants the assignments turned in.
Best professors, I had during the pandemic, very caring and engaging. Learned a lot since he provided a lot of real life experiences. work is tedious but that's all business comm professors. He offers extra credit. You will be placed in a group from the beginning and always provides group time which is nice to engage with others during these times
Mr. C is hilarious!! He is pretty forgiving in terms of a speech class being online. A little tough on grading but it's fair. Gives very brief lectures, but the homework goes more into depth. Easy homework is assigned almost every weekend. If you're a great speaker, you will easily pass with an A. Loved this class!
He is a nice person and all but as a teacher he grades really strictly to the point that it's very rare to score 100% on any assignment. The assignment schedule is laid out very well, but the problem is the grading of the assignments. He grades too strictly and the fact that you need a 92% to get an A is quite a turn-off. You will have to work.
Changes course concepts to fit in real world applications. Uses his personal experience. Dedicated to student. Offered extra credit. Passed with 97%. Fan of "checking on mental health of students". I think this science is quackery, but it shows he cares for students. Best professor at CSULB for communication (if not in all of COB).
TAKE RASHAD!!!!! He was easily the best professor I had thus far in my experience at CSULB. He makes online classes engaging and fun. Idk why people say he gave a lot of HW, the workload was standard. Not an easy A but an easy B. Start your analytical report sooner than later and do it well. He is not a hard grader. An 83% is a B 82% is a C.
He's a really tough grader. It is hard to get an A on any assignment. Even if you put in a lot of hard work, it was always at least minus one point. A 92% is an 'A', 83-91% is a 'B'. Does not spend a lot of time on the GEM (grammar) exams, but they count for a huge amount of points. The only exams you will take in this class. He's nice though.
Mr. C is an EXTREMELY tough grader for seemingly no reason. He is also not very good at answering emails but did improve throughout the semester. He cares about his students and the homework is easy. Tests are way harder than I think anyone expected them to be. Overall, class wasnt too bad but by no means a walk in the park
AVOID! You can find better professors that don't grade strictly like Rashad! It's impossible to get an A on all of his writing assignments, and he will not give you clear feedback on what you did wrong. He doesn't provide examples of how he wants us to write, so it's impossible to know what he wants! TAKE OTHERS!
There are a few group assignments and a group presentation. A good chunk of your final grade are the GEM exams which are not too difficult. Professor Captan is a very friendly guy and will do his best to help you succeed. As long as you put in effort you can most likely get a B, but getting an A is difficult due to the grading scale in this class.
Took my 1st yr. One of only 3 Cs I got all 4 years. My classmates agreed my speeches were excellent but graded me down bc I wore a polo not a full collared shirt and bc I didnt own dress shoes. If he doesn't agree with your perspective you are getting a bad grade. He didn't agree with me and was standoffish and graded me down for no good reason.
An absolutely atrocious professor. I would avoid taking this professor at all costs. He really likes to assume that every student has all the time in the world for his class. I don't think he has ever graded anyone's assignment with a 100%. This guy is more of a critic than a teacher. Worst professor I've ever taken in my college career!!
Nice enough guy, but really not a fan of this class or how he runs it, work load is ridiculous and a waste of my valuable time for such easy material. Class has on average 5 assignments per week with no chances for late/makeup. Curves class at a 92% for an A and an 83% for a B, WHY???
Prof Captan is great, he has corny dad jokes. This is not a class you should take if you don't like attending class and being attentive. Small groups require a lot of communication so if you don't like paying attention and working with others this is not a class you should take. Its overall a super easy class and he's super understanding.
Grading curve for the class is tough, but it's set by the dept. not the professor. Most of the work including analytical report were easy and straight forward and Mr. C did a good job of offering videos with breakdowns of exactly what he was looking for. He does nitpick grades and the workload is overkill, but he also gives lots of extra credit.
Despite the class being online, professor Captan did a great job handling the class. The grading Scale for an A starts at 92% but this is set by the department and not the professor. The work load is a bit heavy but as long as you put in the effort you will pass.
He is a very tough grader, especially considering what is being graded. He hasn't answered any of my emails and from what other people in my class have told me, he is hard to work with and won't help at all with raising your grade or helping in that sense. The tests are so much harder than expected (class average was around 60% on the first exam).
Rashad Captan is a very helpful instructor. He has knowledge on a decent variety of fields, so when conducting research for a speech, be sure to ask for help, you might learn something. Grades depend mostly on six speeches and weekly readings and their respective knowledge checks, which are easy.
Grade mainly based on 6 speeches and online midterms, was not always clear about due dates, when asking him questions for clarification it would sometimes sound like he was annoyed, grades hard for important speeches even though people at the Hauth Center say your speech is good. If possible, take another oral communication class.
Took this class online in Spring 2022. The class is straightforward. Don't miss any assignments. I don't remember this class being difficult but it was tedious.
I had Rashad for two semesters and I can say he's one of the most caring professors at CSULB. His lectures are a bit barebones, but they're straight to the point and mostly entertaining. He comes off as a laid-back person, but know he is a tough grader mainly on large assignments. Small assignments are easy and take 10 min. KEEP TRACK OF DUE DATES.
Awesome professor, super energetic and always lets us out of class early. Grades pretty easy, just don't miss deadlines.
he is genuinely one of the best professors I have had. He is super caring and understanding and lively lectures and gives amazing feedback to set you up for success I only have positives for him take his class you won't regret it even though there is a lot of work he will help you through it I promise you!
Take him. I will say that attendance matters. He will give a few days to study from home. First and last assignments are usually EC. You work on assign in class so he can help you understand how to complete. I only got a B because I did not do several reading assignments. Tests are not difficult. Take him. BTW I took him for 425 as well.
One of the best professors I've had so far. His class has a clear structure, and he prepares you very well for your speeches. Class is great, and he makes the class chill tbh. Exam days he gives us the day off and occasionally he cancels class.
I dont know how his rating so low. He deserves to have a rating of 4.5. His class is simple, and honestly goes by fast. He sets it up to give you enough time for assignments, and he lectures you to pass.
You gotta be lazy to give this professor a low rating. I am a shy person, yet I was able to manage his short and major speeches. He is a great professor who truly cares and even gives you a day off on exam days. Sometimes, the class was only about 30 minutes long. Take his class; he is great.
Prof Rashad Captan best comm teacher on campus hands down. He's caring, easy to talk to, and overall nice to have as a professor. If you are thinking of taking a comm class, Prof Captan is your guy!! He's awesome! You don't have to take my word for it 🔥
Professor Captan has a very condescending tone when he talks to you and does not do a good job accommodating to students' needs. He is a VERY tough grader so be prepared to fall between a B-C throughout the semester, especially with the amount of assignments he gives. Overall just a very rude professor that I would not recommend taking.
class I took was not listed (COMM C1000) amazing instructor; makes sense why he's a communications professor. kind and made classes interesting. made an effort to include every student.
Class is easy, my only issue was speaking publicly but his class was fun, it is very getting to know your classmates based and getting comfortable with eachother.
Mr. C is amazing! Very helpful with speech outlines. Easy online exams and homework, but don't do them last minute. Class ends early sometimes and we get exam days off. Some extra credit. He gives speech outlines and speech rubrics, so it's clear as to what he wants. Understandable and short lectures.
He was very helpful and made creating speech outlines easy. He pretty much guides you through everything, and it's not a hard class. The only flaw he had was that he didn't respond to any emails. If you don't like public speaking, I honestly would recommend him.
