In the nicest way possible, shes just boring. Shes terribly timid, and has a very quiet shaky voice which makes it hard to understand. She teaches mostly off powerpoint, and occasional group work. Shes not mean at all, but she didnt make the material interesting. I wouldn't recomend her unless your good at teaching yourself
She's very sweet, but by the end of the semester you just want to scream. She teaches by powerpoint only, her voice is extremely soft, and in no way does she make this class interesting. I would not recommend her class.
I can see how people could find her boring, but honestly her job isn't to entertain you. Other than that she's really nice and easy to approach if you have problems. The only way you don't pass is if you don't pay attention. She also posts what she tests you on online so you can study so there's no surprises.
All i can say about her is if u want actually want to learn dont take her and if u want to get a good grade don't waste ur money.. she acts like she wants to help her student but she does not. all u do in her class is stupid projects that she says is worth alot of points but they don't cuz in the end u'll get a grade that u didn't think u'll get.
All she does is put on power points for you to take notes off of all class almost every class. very quite and verrrrryyy boring. dont take her
She uses powerpoints and they are very general information. Which means you have to go abck and actually read the book. She is very quiet and difficult to understand. You know what you will have on the test, but it is still difficult. SHe is nice but not very helpful. DO NOT TAKE HER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
very hard to understand. Tests are EXTREMELY hard... all short answer and essays. There is way too much information on the study sheets. Only two tests so if you fail one theres no chance to pass. Group projects arent so bad but they arent a huge portion of the grade. i don't recommend at all.
Terrible is one way to describe her. Teaches off PowerPoints which consist of mostly basic information. So you're going to have to read through the book. And as everyone else has said, her voice is real shaky and is not very helpful at all. Not recommended at all unless you have no choice.
She is very much an intellectual and expects the students to read and do work... You will learn a lot, sit in the front b/c she does have a low voice. Her power points are very good. She was always available and easy to talk to. You will have to read the pages she assigns. She gives identifications which are used in quiz's. Great Teacher!
Shes quite boring actually- class isnt interesting at all. The powerpoint notes are very broad & have general information so u do need to actually read ur textbook. The quizzes/projects are only worth 5% of ur grade There r 2 exams which r difficult & u do need to study your butt off-if you fail one u dont really have a chance of passing the class
she's really strict on her mark, I almost got a B with 79.3 she still not bend over
chilka's a very nice lady. she's not way too hard, but you need to study for the 2 midterms. the final is a project. she tells you exactly what is going to be on the tests. so there are 2 tests, a couple projects, and about 5 quizzes on blackboard. overall, if you do the work, you should end up a pretty decent grade.
She lectures most of the time through class but her notes are very broad and you do actually have to read the book. She does a lot of group projects which are easy A's. Her exams are pretty hard but its not an extemely diffcult class. I am taking her again for HIS 102.
she is extremely boring! our class had about 72 students so if u plan on actually learning something sit in the front if not you'll get a pretty good snooze sitting in the back. She has the softest voice and is very difficult to hear. Her tests are pretty hard and she is a tough grader. we had a lot of group projects which were an easy A. I highly
She was nice and caring, but even the students that tried hard did not get a A. Her powerpoints are not specific, but the questions on the test are. The text book is ur bible!!
shes not very good a teaching. attendance wasnt mandatory so i barely went, and when doing the quizzes and test i looked everything up myself because her notes arent too good. Projects are easy, if you ask her something shes quick to replie
She was wonderful.
Prof. Chilka is very unorganized when it came to her group work. Her test were pretty easy bc she gave a study guide with everything that would be on it. Basically she's not the best at teaching, but she is really really nice, so if you find it easy to teach yourself and get a good grade take her!
You have to willing to study and READ THE BOOK to get a good grade. Attendance not mandatory HOWEVER if you miss a class in which she assigns a project, she will not allow you to do the assignment. I learned alot, but i studied more to make an A in her class than i did for my B in Statistics! Tests are difficult. If you slack, you will drown.
She was a boring teacher. She teaches right off the powerpoints that have nothing to do with the book. All she does is make you read before you come to class which is use less. But she is very easy.
She's nice and great! she engage students to learn and listen thru her powerpoints. take notes, and books recommended! BUT her tests seems to be hard, and to much to study when she put only 8 definitions on test, while u tried hard and memorized 50 identifications. She gives u study guide. Lack of organization. expect alot of memorization thou.
took her this semester. She is very nice, but really hard. Took her class w.out looking her up. did everything got all A's on every Exam and still got a B dont take if you dont plan on trying you hardest. I wouldnt recommend for the average student.
she is great teacher , knows what she is talking about and have a lot of information. she give alot of homeworks espically on reading, her tests are hard but as long you do your homework you will be okay.
DO YOUR HOMEWORK and you will be fine. There are 5 online quiz (blackboard) that you have to take (every single answer is in the book, READ THE BOOK) and 2 exams. If you do your homework U'LL BE FINE. She is a good professor. Go to her office during office hours, she is willing to help you!!!!!
Class consists of taking notes from a slide show. There were 5 (online) quizzes, two-three written response tests based off the notes in class and the textbooks. There were two projects, but she let us take one project instead of a test for the final exam. IT WAS HORRIBLE. I would of studied for 4 hours, instead I wrote 10 pages. BLEHH! Fun teacher
The WORST teacher ever. She's the worst grader, She's stuck up. She act's like We need her class to get into the working world. She's the hardest grader, and horrible with communicating with students. I do not recommend taking her. Do yourself a favor.
Do ur homework, and u will survive. BTW spend ur time in final proj, u will got A
Although she covers the subject broadly at class, she is very clear when lecturing. Stays on topic and likes her job. If you do homework, take notes, and pay attention, you will have no problem getting an A. At times class might get boring but generally it is interesting. She loves to include essays on the tests, strong writing skills is a BIG plus
She's an awesome teacher as long as you do your work, which is also very easy. She's funny and keeps the class engaged at all times. She's very understanding if you just take the time to explain and talk to her about what your struggling with. I strongly recommend her class to all who need to take history. :)
She is a nice teacher but i thought her method of teaching was bad read and powerpoint and all this writing it felt more like an english i wouldnt take her for anything every again
Nice lady but I found her lectures to be dull and unnecessary. Just read the book and you'll ace the exams. Make sure you have good writing skills but you?re an undergrad and should know how to write a decent essay by now). The one thing I truly hated was the renaissance conference at the end of the semester-that crap is something you do in HS.
Good teacher, very nice, lectures & notes are on topic. Has an accent, but it's understandable. She'll help you if you need it. Recommended.
Took her for HIS 101 and plan on taking her for HIS 102. She really paints a picture for you when she does pp presentations and she puts them online as well. The quizzes are on bb and are super easy if you do the reading. Tests are challenging but you can get an A as long as you pay attention in class. She really is a great teacher!
I took her for history 101 and she is not the brightest teacher. She is a VERY VERY VERY hard grader and isn't very fair. She does give a lot of extra credit (thank god). If you are willing to work your butt off then take her. slackers won't survive. Save yourself
Great teacher. Very friendly and engaging; encourages discussions and analysis. Lectures using PowerPoint, really explains material well. Do the assigned readings if you want to retain the info. Offers a decent amt. of extra credit. Tests are easy, but only if you study. Each test has an essay portion, so study the question beforehand.
ABSOLUTE WORST TEACHER EVER! assigning 75-150 pages of reading for eahc read assignment and copying a power point that she stands in front of and blocks from the view of most is not the way to go. she is way to timid and quiet almost impossible to hear her from anywhere but the front row. Very hard grader slackers will suffer avoid her class.
Show up to class, be respectful, listen to what she says and take notes. She's an excellent teacher and very kind hearted. She offers to help constantly. Take her if your a respectful student.
Ugh, Her methods are really bogus, her power points are vague, and she goes over things that totally miss the point of a history class. As i recall on one of the tests there was a question that asked for the pet of some obscure queen. She does give a lot of extra credit but honestly its because most students need it to get a decent grade.
Finished with over a 110% in the class. Learned quite a bit, she gives away so much exta credit! There is approx 15 pages to read per class, and if you read you are guaranteed an A. The exams are very easy, and she grades essays on content, not how well of a writer you are. The research project was our final, and there was no midterm. 5/5 easy A.
Her class is so easy. At one point I had 110%. no homeworks only 3 exams and 6 home quizzes and a final project and tons of extra credit. In entire semester she she gave us 45 exta credit If u want an A take this class
Mrs. Chilka is one of the best professor I ever had!! Take her class even though you'll have a lot of reading but she will help you get through the entire course very easy class
Took both 101+102. She's a very nice professor. Changed her style after 101, not sure of it now. But 102 have no exams, 2 essays, 2 projects, 6 online quizzes. Class participation count 1 letter grade. Not much reading. Reading range anywhere from 5-20 pages per class. Not recommend if you don't like essays or class discussion.
I don't understand why her rating is low. She is not a bad prof, I even got an A in her class without really exerting effort. Unlimited tries on online quizzes, exams aren't that hard the research paper isn't that hard either. Pretty easy class, nice teacher, she tries to make the class interesting too but there were 70 students so go figure.
Her class is fairly easy, just make sure to retry the quizes until you get a 100% score. She is fairly flexible and is there to help if needed. You have to go to lecture because some material is not covered in the book that she covers in detail.
Her class is not easy if you don't read the homework. First few weeks I read the hw and during class discussion all the materials are clear. I slacked off on her 2 exams got a B- and D on 2nd one.finals got a C, Passed her class with 88% because of EXTRA CREDIT!!
You have to read the book. Attending lecture is a must for better understanding. Overall if you do the homework you and attend the class you should get get an A.
Very nice, this is a professor that wants you to learn the material for your own good. She give a lot of reading assignments but overall very good teacher.
An incredible teacher. She draws from many outside reading materials to form a full picture of the subject, so her use of the textbook doesn't feel boring. She is clearly passionate about history and her students. She is caring and wants everyone to do well. She expects everyone to try. Easy to get a B, not too hard to get an A. A good person.
Go to class and write down her explanation thoroughly. Duplicating powerpoint presentation isn't enough. You have to fill the rest of them. I wasn't able to do my reading assignment all the time, but my note was sufficient for the essay & short questions. There were tons of chances to get extra credit points and I didn't even need to take final.
She was a very fair teacher. If you do your readings and actually do the study guides you should do great on the tests. I was so surprised when I got to class one day and someone sitting next to me asked if we had a test that day. Its not highschool anymore if you do what you have to do you'll get a deserving grade.
This professor has been one of my least favorite in my time at NOVA. Ive loved history (especially Western Civ) since i was young but dreaded this class. Lectures are boring and uninformative and any answers, whether correct or not, don't matter is she disagrees. Also gives a idiotic writing assignment that can define your final grade. DONT TAKE.
I despised Professor Chilka's class. You can barely hear her, & she does not care about her students. Although the exams are easy, she grades them very hard. I went to DC for an extra credit assignment, spent about $30 on the trip & she didn't give me the points cause I turned it in online. Legit reason why I couldnt turn it in, & she didn't care.
Took the honors course with Prof Chilka and she expects good work from you. Mainly, it was reading (very little) from the textbook, and focused heavily on primary docs. It was very interesting because she emphasized the ideologies that fueled history. You should have/ have her help you develop good writing skills to analyze the documents well.
I am a BUS major. but i do love history this class was super interesting and Rashmi Chilka is a fantastic professor, she clarified things that needed to be clarified her tests where not hard but not easy, you definitely have to study for them.
She is very helpful. Her lecture is not boring and even attractive. I like her class!
Professor Chilka is a great teacher! Come to class and actually pay attention and you'll get an A. Take notes because exactly what she says will be on the test. She has a slight accent but it's not hard to understand her. She loves students who actually try and if she sees you making an effort she'll help you get and A. Give outs extra credit :-)
Worst professor ever. Don't waste a minute of time in her class. She's the worst. That is all.
Very difficult teacher. Obnxious accent makes her hard to understand. If you slack, skip, or come to class stoned you'll fail just like i did. Way better options for history 111
Her lectures are long but she really explains it like a story and in a good way. She gives quiz after every chapter and are really hard. However the class is easy if u attend all the classes and try to focus on her lectures.
OMG she is the best!!! She is so nice and she cared about our class a lot. It is true about the lectures being long, but they are just a power point off the book so it's an over view so you can get it. It's important to take notes during the lecture if you don't read because you can use them during tests. Only two projects which were a pain. Take!
EASY-ISH GRADE. SUPER NICE & FRIENDLY. THERE TO HELP YOU WHENEVER. TAKE NOTES BECAUSE SHE LETS YOU USE IT ON TESTS. A BIT OF A TOUGH GRADER ON PROJECTS BUT SHE LETS YOU CORRECT IT. DON'T FORGET TO TAKE QUIZZES AND READ. VERY APPROACHABLE PROFESSOR AND VERY GENUINE. LOVE HER
I took this class 2014 Spring for UVA non-wester perspective. I'm not a history person but this class was really fun. I always wanted to know more about the religion in Central Asia and the people there. In terms of knowledge, it's very practical. You do have to read a lot, which is true for any history class... Professor's great. She's so helpful
One of the best History teachers at NOVA. She made every single topic she talked about interesting probably from her underlying passion of the subjects. She loves to start discussions about topics and really wants people to get talking and involved with her class. Great teacher, take her for 101 and 102 if you can.
Professor Chilka's lectures were pretty boring and long. There are no exams or final in her class at all, just 6 online quizzes. She does assign about 4 projects and 2 essays, I highly suggest you take them seriously and you will do well in her class. She does not collect homework and rarely gives out extra credit.
GREAT PROFESSOR. she is always there when you need her. i took his 101 honors and her class was so interactive. YOU MUST DO THE READINGS! NO TESTS GIVEN
She's literally bipolar and has favorites. If she doesn't like one of your assignments she wont like you. Overall it was easy but you have to put up with her attitude and projects and essays.
Her class was unnecessarily homework heavy. She decided to make all of the learning done from the book rather than in class, making in class lectures "discussion based". Mid-semester I started working full time and really didn't have time for all of that work, so she tried to force me to utilize the school resources, despite me not wanting to.
I took Dr. Chilka for both HIS 101 honors and HIS 254 Honors. She really taught me a lot. Readings are a must if you plan to participate in class. The reaction games are the best part of the class. I'm a science person but she made it so fascinating to learn history through that game. Never have I ever been so excited to go to her class, def a must
This how the class works. 2 essays. 5 online quizzes. 1 game. More than 60 points extra credits. I personally started noticing extra credits a little late but they are super easy. you can easily get an A with the help of extra credits. If you want a solid A, and you are ready to put the minimum effort this is the class for you. Participation 20.
I took her HIS101 Honors class. She's knowledgeable and loves the subject. Kinda became passive aggressive later. 1 Extra credit opportunity, really touch grader and SO MUCH READING. A couple speeches and papers for the game and 1 group project at the end. No tests, just group discussions everyday. Fast and helpful in emails but heavy courseload!
Very knowledgeable and passionate about History which helped myself to gain a bigger interest in history. I personally dislike history but had to take the course as a requirement. Took her honors HIS101 & it had SO. MUCH. READING! Be prepared to dedicated at LEAST 2-3hrs per reading assignment. No tests, lots of group discussion, participation key!
I had a great time taking her class. She is nice and understanding. Yes, you have to read what is assigned to read each class. As long as you read what she gives you, do the two essays and the game activity assignment there is no way you can get lower then a B. Not to mention she gives extra credit opportunities during the semester and at the end.
Prof. Rashmi is amazing. i loved her. she's so caring. but be warned, this class isn't as easy A.
An all-around fantastic teacher; she's kind, caring, and really wants the best for her students. There is A LOT of reading and work in general, but it's so, so, so worth it. This course challenged me, but was very rewarding in return.
She was a really hard and not understanding teacher. She grades very hard and when she grades your papers, her notes do not make sense. During class she gives out pop quizzes and her lectures are very boring and not enough info. When you ask her questions she is very vague.
Idk why people are saying she isn't clear with instructions, I felt she was very clear. Only students who seemed confused seemed to be those who were on their phones, sleeping, and didn't participate in class. She's a great teacher, not an easy A, lots of work, but her passion for history is inspiring. Take her if you are a dedicated student.
Professor Chilka is an excellent professor. Those who are saying she isn't a good professor never grasped the reason for her teaching method. We live in a world of instant gratification where we expect instant answers to straightforward questions. She promotes actual thinking and she cares very much. Don't take her if you're not a serious student.
Her love and understanding of history really shows through in her lectures. All exams are open-book. A lot of class discussions, but they help understand the material. Most of the learning is through the readings, but she clarifies everything during the lectures. Overall, you have to actually work for your grade.
She has such a genuine passion for history and you clearly see that through her lectures. She's not a hard grader at all, and I almost felt as if she was only grading for completion. There are many quizzes throughout the semester, but as long as you pay attention to her lectures take notes, you'll be fine. Both quizzes and exams are open notes!
If you enjoy history, take her course. She is great at what she does and is very kind! She is always down to help you out if you're having trouble with anything! Keep up with your reading assignments and you'll do good in her class.
Took both in person and online because of COVID. wouldnt accept a paper one day late and I failed the class. Grades extremely harshly and deadlines are final with no exceptions which isnt good if you actually want students to learn.
Dr. Chilka is a great history professor. She really knows what she teaches. She gives two essays and two analysis, kind of difficult, but if you ask her or follow the criteria you do fine. The only confusing thing at the beginning is the canvas instructions but you get used to it after a few weeks.
Very nice professor take her she grades well and responds to email fast you dont have to study a lot for a class and you can still pass with an okay grade very reliant with grades
She's very lecture heavy, so make sure you don't fall asleep during class. This course does entail a lot of homework, assignments, and quizzes, but they're very easy if you just put the work in. Overall she is a lovely professor who really cares and wants her students to do well, she's VERY understanding and empathetic so don't take advantage of it
She is such a sweet person. her homework, quizzes, essays are all easy and clear. Her lectures are okay not the best, not the worst. she will always have a smile on her face and she tried her hardest to make the class interesting and interactive while on zoom. would recommend such an easy A
very sweet. though attendance is required, youll be fine as long as youre caught up with textbook readings. highly recommend taking notes while reading. her lectures werent the best or most specific which is why its good to read pages before class starts- though she helps enhance your understanding while lecturing. be prepared to write papers!
Avoid. She maybe an ok person but shes a horrible professor. Does not teach and expects so much from you. She literally hides every lecture recordings to make sure that we watch them in time and doesnt allow to watch them again, which is ridiculous. Tough grader, tough class, and shell ruin your gpa.
A lot of work to do. I think she knows a lot about history but she is so bad at teaching her ideas to students.. Got her own accent which is making me so hard to concentrate too. If you do not like history, avoid. or get ready to read and write.
If you are an A student, you will get a B. If you are a B student, you will get a C. She clearly doesn't know how to teach but expects so much things from students. If you want to get A in her class, get ready to self study your, and read your textbook, every single word.
Has a very very thick accent which makes her a very slow and boring talker. I recommend to take a p.m. class if you have her. A lot of the times she gives us group classwork and we have no idea what to do because she wasn't clear with instructions. Don't get me wrong she's a very sweet person, she's more than happy to help you out whenever.
I am not a history person nor have I ever had an A in a history class. I loved history with professor Rashmi, I would take her class again, she is very considerate and understands that people have lives and not just school, she gives up to four free tokens that give you a 48-hour extension for any assignment. LOTS of reading and video lectures too.
Professor Chilka has great character. She is a passionate professor, but her lectures are very uninteresting and she expects you to know a lot more than what is actually expected. The class is easy, you barely have to read to pass even though textbooks are required. There are definitely better history professors who can make you interested.
The class wasn't the worst, it was just hard to stay engaged. Especially online the lectures were long and seemed like they went on forever.
She does not know how to teach. She basically reads off from the power point and expects you to do well on the exams. VERY tough grader, many homework, and expects students to do everything on their own. She is not caring either, so you can't even reach out for help. Overall, a very terrible teacher and I would not recommend to anyone.
Professor Chilka was a very fun professor to have. You can tell that she really enjoys teaching which makes the class much more enjoyable. The lectures are heavy and based around power points that have only keywords. You have to listen to the lecture to learn. You cannot just look at the power point later, it will not help you. She was also funny.
