Lectures the whole class session, but you can learn a lot from him if you pay attention. He can be annoying at times but he means well, and knows his stuff. If u have a problem talk to him he will work with you. You will never see history the same.

He is very hard professor. His lectures are not that boring but when it comes to his take home exams he grades too hard. This is supposed to be a history course but it is more of a chicano studies course.

Even though his class is all lecture, he has intresting points of view and teaches the mentality behind the actions of of our historical figures and he's cool.

Excellent Prof. His Extreme views make the class interactive. He knows a lot about the government agenda and its effects on contemporary society. I learned a lot about Mexican and American history. Very nice guy if you talk to him. The exams were take home. Easy to pass if you just read the material and take good notes

A very insightful class! He cares about his students and he shows it through his lectures. Although this class is very educational, I still think that he grades a little too hard. It's hard to get an A and most people get B's and C's. If you really want to be enlightened and moved by this class take it, if not, don't take it.

He is really really great i really liked him... I still talk to him every once in awhile. Once you get to know him... He is a great teacher. Really cares about his profession and culture.

This class wasnt the easiest but you'll learn a lot. If your Mexican and know nothing of your heritage, i recommend it. He knows his stuff and all you really need to do is take GOOD NOTES!!! and you dont really have to read the text. As for the novels... he kinda over does it.

He is an extreme Liberal Democrate, which is hard for some to tollerate. BUT He knows history! He is very interesting. All exams were essays so you better take excellent notes. Don't skip his class because if you miss the lecture youll have problems answering his essay questions.

Although he is very liberal in many of his lecture...he dose provide the student that reality of the American history...for those student who are verly patriotic..and cant face reality this is not the class for you ..do the essay dont miss class and you sure to get a great.

Class is relatively tough, but is you read the text and take good notes in class, you are fine. His grading could use some structure, but he provides great insight into the alternative view of U.S. History.

I took this class in Winter 07.I thought he was a good professor he does jump around a lil.I dont know why people are complaining, I actually thought that he graded fairly I got some B's and C's on my take home exams & final.Students keep in mind that we are in college and classes are going to be tuff...good luck to all and just hang in there......

I think this professor was good. I took him during the Winter session and I did fine. Just try your best and read. If you need any help or have any questions, go to his office.

This professor is great for those who are majoring in History. Information in his class is very helpful becuase he gives you an insight into how history is taught in 4 year universities and his class gives you a glimpse of what the professors at a 4 year are looking for. He's a pretty easy going guy and helpful and visit his office hours for help.

If you guys like the real deal, this is as clear as it gets. Chavez knows his stuff and if you take detailed notes u will have no problem taking the tests. He has no problem helping any student outside of class. Very passionate in what he does and if you are a hist. major his class is a must!

Very entertaining lectures. No homework. Tests are take home essay tests. He has you write 2 paragraphs and 2 full length essays for each of his 3 tests (incl final) Do not take this class if you do not have strong writing skills. He is a difficult grader.

A different take on history. Opened my eyes to the many incidents over the years that have been covered up. A little confusing at times, but very interesting, never boring. He kept class running smoothly and at times I might have felt overwhelmed, he inspired me to press on and do my best. An incrediably smart and passionate man about his field.

He is a decent teacher. He has take home tests but he is very into english and grammer in the papers. He is more of a chicano or native american teacher so in history 1 he mainly talked good about them and very bad about white people. That was not fun at all and at times I wanted to walk out of his class. But overall it was a pretty easy class.

I have always strived to get an A in all my classes but I have to admit I was proud to get a B in this Class. Prof Chavez is amazing. Do not allow your personal beliefs intervene in what he is teaching you. He sure opened my eyes about our history. And u can survive w/out reading the book so much but you MUST know how to write and above all LISTEN!

Yes America had slaves and still continues to descriminate. He is a role model to people of color, has his PHD in American History. The tests are all essays killed me "MLA Format"

He's ok. seems to be easily distracted but thats all on the students getting him off topic. His lectures are important so try not to mis class. overall he's good and passionate of what he teaches.

This is an easy going professor funny guy and will help you if you ask for it. Don't expect to get by without asking questions. It is a course that shows a different side of history through the Chicano Perspective. Highly recomed for anyone who wants something different thatn regular U.S. History.

Well I got an A in his class but that's because I worked really hard and went to office hours all the time. I think this is a case of 'you get out of it what you put in.' Anyhow, really nice guy, helpful, fun, swears a lot, interesting topics but yeah, fairly intense workload for a community college. If you're a lazy student, skip this one!

I didn't really know what to expect when I took his class but he had me when he admitted he is abrasive. He teaches history the way it really happened. Not the sanitized version they teach in schools. If you show up and take part, you'll do okay. If you want to sit at the back and do nothing and get a good grade, take someone else. Great teacher.

Unfortunately, his standards are too high for most community college students so you REALLY have to work hard. But he's brilliant and he actually teaches something meaningful. This professor is very easy-going. I dont see why anybody will say his classes are hard, when the tests he passes out are take home. lol. I took this class for summer and got a B+, I assure you an A ONLY if put in the effort this class deserves. take extremely GOOD NOTES. He's critical on grading papers, so WRITE WELL. I never actually sat & read any of his texts, just bits of it. Overall learned in depth about history.

You have to ask questions if you are not clear in his class. It is boring (history go-figure). This is rude, but some of the textbooks are too advance for this college. Very helpful if you ask. Easy dang exams since they are take home, also the final was take home. I would not mind taking his other history classes.

Interesting class that focuses on the non-traditional views in US History. Essay based class. A bit unorganized. Lectures are mandatory. If you aren't great at taking notes and writing essays thoroughly, then you will have a hard time passing this class.

I was skeptical taking his class because of what I read here. Easy exams are direct from book and lectures, but other than that his tactics are not for everyone. LOTS of reading; good books learned alot. You will not understand what he is talking about unless you read the assigned textbooks. He is very helpful when asked and participate.

2 take home exams n a take home Final, with responses in paragraph n essay format on material from; lectures, req. text, his book, req. novel, and films seen in class. N a book review essay on a novel that you pick that pertains 2 da class. Total = 4 take home exams with a week 2 do them. He doesn't seem to try, but I think that might be intended.

Books required: one pertaining to the period, his book, a book to do a review on. Just show up take notes on what he talks about and incorporate them in the essay exams along with views from his book and you're good to go. Relaxed class. Not that hard of a class, just recognize his points from his book and use them in your essays.

Professor Chavez is one of the most refreshing professors I have ever had. I never really liked history because it was always the same thing over and over again, but Chavez takes a look at history in a way I never thought about it before. To pass, you will have to pay attention and take good notes and the books are inexpensive (major plus).

Al tests are take home. If you do not do the reading or take notes you will not pass. Professor Chavez is very opinionated. I did not like him at first but I allowed myself to be open to his point of view and I am now in another history class with him.

I loved this class. Don't be scared of the reviews on here, Chavez is not scary by any means. He wasn't a tough grader and didn't even make us read. Exams were all based on his lectures and essay form. Would take again.

Professor Chavez does not fall into typical teaching standards. He wants you to open your eyes and educate yourself so you can see beyond mainstream culture. He grades hard but do the reading listed on sylabus and you'll be fine.

Professor Chavez is an amazing native American history teacher. His class opened my mind to a lot of things, especially how history is/was written. I am now more open to looking at things from different perspectives. His lectures are very interesting and full of a lot of historical knowledge. Dr. Chavez gave interesting lecture that made laugh and to stay awake. I have learned a lot from him and the books that we had to read. Always be open minded.

2 test essays, a book review essay and a final essay all take home. no in class test. You don't have to read a textbook or take notes. The only book you have to read is the book review and you are given a variety of books to chose from. He shows movies and video clips that go along with the lecture. It does not feel like a history class easy A

He is an awesome professor. If you are of color, you will love this class! He does NOT hate white people, he just dislikes ignorant people. If you are white and are open minded, I definitely recommend this professor. His main focus for his students is to "corrupt" your mind, aka he wants you to be opened minded and think out side the box.

Dr. Chavez is amazing. Dr. Chavez does not hate white people; he tells American history from an accurate point of view. I did not feel as though I received negative feedback for disagreeing with him. I explained my opinions, offered supporting arguments, and received good grades.

He is a great teacher. I bought the books he said to get that would be based in his lectures never open them even for the book report. He is very passionate, makes you laugh, and honestly the easiest class ever. You have 2 take home test and a book report. That's it, just show up and sit there and you will PASS. It will be boring tbh, but its easy.

all his tests are papers with easy prompts (make sure to be thoughtful and earnest), final is a book review and it's the one paper that you have to put a lot of effort into. Lecture gets kinda long but maybe that was because I had a 3 hour Friday class. His lectures are from a different point of view so be ready for that. Other than that, easy A

HE DOES NOT HATE WHITE PEOPLE, if any one has ever been offended by any of his comments that would only because you can't handle the ugly truth about the full history of this country. Really encourage you to take his classes if you are open minded. He does not get upset if you have other views or comments on what he says,he encourages participation

He's a good professor. He gives History from a very raw and truthful view point. He gives his opinion a lot of times but supports it with facts and let's students have the floor to talk. I feel super respected in his class and haven't felt that comfortable talking about policitics and learning in years.

I took professor Chavez for the summer.. his lectures are very interesting. He tells history from a different perspective, if you do not want to learn an alternative view to what you've been taught .. skip him. beware! I have now taken two classes with Dr. Chavez, do not be fooled just because he has his PHD, he is no uppity/snobbish. He really cares about people and NO HE DOES NOT HATE WHITE PEOPLE! He does hate the injustice and inequalities in this world and teaches both Native American History and Chicano History from an awesome perspective. He is awesome!

I took this class fall of 2019 and this class consist of several essays. If you met the criteria when writing your essays you are solid. That's it! Purchasing books are recommended but not needed despite of what he says. He asks his students to think outside the box. Yes Dr. Chavez's lectures have many side conversations but over all it's easy A!!

he was a saint! i enjoyed his class very much. we dug into the trash cans of american history and i was finally able to understand the pain of my person of color counterpart. the class was an easy a but i did give this guy my best effort because he did the same for us. met on zoom each required day and he shared all his knowledge. great class.

Mr. Chavez is very outspoken and eager to teach his class and actually WANTS to hear of others opinions and viewpoints on things. Hes tough around the edges but personally, thats whats going to help students learn and get prepared for the ugly truth that is US History. Hes very up to date w/ pop culture, and political matters of modern society!

Dr. Raul Chavez does not cater to people who are not able to recognize that the founding fathers of America are racist. If you are looking for a class that allows you to believe that american didnt practice ethnic cleansing then do not take his class. If youre able to internalize guilt and facts then take the class and be a better person :)

I like him because he is less focused on specifics and tries to give a voice to students who haven't felt represented in American history courses/ the public education system. I really enjoyed his class because he gave pop culture references and asked us to give our own personal views and even our own experiences in essays.

Professor Chavez is a great educator. He has been my favorite all time Professor. He is very knowledgeable about History, and he always tells you the truth. I was very skeptical about taking his class as I read the reviews. He seems very passionate about his work and he could pick on people on times but it wasn't in a bad way. He gives you a list of books to choose from and you have to write a paper on it, I did house on mango street. Class is do able :)

Professor Chavez is definitely someone who doesn't hold back at all. He has amazing lectures that tell the real history of the United States. There weren't that many assignments, but if you do well, you get a score over 80. If you are easily offended by brutal honesty about history, don't take this class. You'll learn things you didn't know before.

One of the most "controversial" history professors. Professor Chavez is one of the best out there! He delves into interesting topics and is open to people expressing their opinions. Has a very tough sarcastic type humor. The people that get it, get it and the people that don't, don't. Not too much assignments and exams.

If you want to learn about history and not the sugarcoated history you received in middle/high school than this is the professor to take. Be ready for some brutal honesty! Prof. Chavez is one of the most intelligent professors I've ever had. His lectures are very unorthodox and require few notes, just pay attention to everything he says. I took his summer HIST 40 class and though it was a ton of work due to the term length, I found it very easy to complete all the weekly assignments. Dr. Chavez is a great professor who gives the real history of the US. Many people don't want the narrative they have learned to be challenged nor do they like it because they have to come face to face with the ugly reality of it. Even admin want to silence him because of how powerful what he teaches is. You definitely have to pay attention to pass.

I took Professor Chavez with the notion that "I have no other choice according to RMP so might as well" because I needed a history class for my GE. After speaking with him in person however and taking his class I actually had my mind changed instead. The class is hard but as long as you grasp at what he wants you to understand you'll pass.

This prof was a really good professor, i took his mexican american history class and his lectures are really good and heavily based on storytelling. his class is all about de colonizing your mind and I really recommend his class for anyone interesting in learning chicano history.

Book Review and Mexican Flyboy by Acuna Vea were mandatory, and finals on these 2 books so make sure to read them! Always ask in-depth about what he wants for the test, it can be confusing. No PowerPoints, Talks instead. Not everything he says is right but don't let it get to you. Good Professor with good intentions, don't be afraid to take him.

Professor Chavez is a very passionate educator. He doesn't sugarcoat things which I see as a pro when learning history. Almost every assignment is an essay so get ready to write. He's also a tough grader but if you use proper grammar, meet the word count, and cover all that's being asked in the prompts you should be okay. I would recommend him.

Professor Chavez's class is challenging but rewarding. His unique teaching style emphasizes critical thinking over memorization. With the help of resources like unstuck ai, I was able to engage with the open-ended prompts and gain valuable insights on Chicano history.

Professor Chavez is great. He gives easy work and very little assignments. his lectures are straight from the heart. yes, the few assignments that he gives are very thought provoking and vague, which makes it "hard", but the class was pretty cool. We would have discussions a lot. 10/10 recommend.

I was recommended this class and it was absolutely a class worth taking. Sure he can be very opinionated but he is telling history from the native perspective. truly would recommend this class if you are open minded and want to see the history of America from the Native perspective

He is down to earth and sometimes crass, but tells the truthful perspectives of marginalized people throughout history. He wants to see you change the world. There are few materials to learn from besides the lectures, so with ADHD it can be difficult to pay attention and learn. There are few assignments, so make sure to do really well on the essays

If you're Chicano this is a really good class for you. His whole thing is decolonizing the mind and changing how you've been conditioned to think. Heavy writing, each assignment is 250-500 words, but they're really easy imo bc they're opinion based. Discussions posts are easy. Heavy reading, but you can find all the books online for free!

Chavez leftism is very radical and in your face so that can offend some. But hes not wrong about what he says, he just doesn't care about babying and sanitizing people's preconceived perceptions about American history. He def does yap, no denying that but he is by no means a bad professor. Calling him racist just means we were triggered NGL.

a lot of the reviews are genuinely from people who don't like to do work lol. i ended with a 105% in the class, it's not too hard. it's time consuming, but writing from his stand point and being open minded to what he's teaching isn't difficult. he's straight forward and talks a lot. if you don't like heavy-ish reading/writing then don't take him.

This professor does not shy away with changing the narrative of the American History that has been taught for decades. He addresses underlying issues of contemporary society, and the history we have been conformed to know. Most might not agree with his projecting, but what is education if you are set only on your own limitations of what is reality.
