Mr. Esquivel is a great math teacher. He is more than a teacher. Always to willing to help student and gives good advise not just math every aspect of life questions.
Good teacher for every subject of math. like his good jokes.
Had to do most of the work in groups. I hate groups!
Best math instructor I've ever had. Extremelly supportive of students during his office hours.
tough subject. Tried his best to teach it. Very helpful if you try and talk to him during his office hours. Grades easy. I was lost most of the semester yet ended up with a B.
This teacher is not recommended if you have difficulty with the subject. He doesn't really teach at all. He is however a really easy grader. Recommended only if you know you are "decent" with the subject.
he is an awesome teacher!although it is hard to learn STATS,his great personality makes up for all the hard work you try to comprehend.i would recommend him to anyone that isn't too serious about math and just willing to have FUN during class time. plus he gives great advice about diff. universities
Spanish for Spanish Speakers. No direction, no lecture, NO communication. Never responds to questions or emails and never in his office during conference hours. If you expect to learn, don't take this online class. Expect no help whatsoever.
well, i will say he is okay, but I know many people complain about him, he doesn't teach well, but i always go to the MSC for help, look for a chinese guy "Steve" , he is very nice and helpful. i finished all my take home quizes and projects because of his help...
a lot of people didnt liek him, but i thought he was great. i did very well in his class. The key is to always come to class because he tells you exactly what to do. jsut listen and take good notes.
not a very good teacher, kind of teach youself Math 130 is really hard. don't miss class or you will be lot... he's not much help....
Easy teacher. Little to no homework at all. Does not require study for exams.
he is not a good teacher, take Gill or Wang or even Littrell............. trust me
Has his own style of teaching and it works! Although, i never really understood how he grades. Sometimes he makes mistakes so youll have to pay attention. He also has group tests sometimes and it only make things worse for the people who actually study!!!!!
Great Guy! Easy! I hear a lot of people don't like him because he isn't serious. People who don't understand him about why he is so easy and unhelpful is because they are majoring in math and want to learn it correctly. He understands that most people don't like math and don't need for their majors so he makes it easy for everyone. Easy & Nice!
Hes REALLY EASY!! If you have a hard time in Math, take him. He has open book tests & buddy tests/quizzes. Theres homework but its due like every 3 wks. In Order to get an A make sure you attend each class, do all quizzes (their easy) & homework. It doesnt matter if you get really low grades on your tests, show effort he will give you an A.
Math 130 is hard, but he gives you points as long as you try. It was a cool class.
He was easy and i actually learn while he lets u use your notes while taking the exams
He is easy! Take him if you are not major in math or science.
Good!
u do not understand what he's saying. take gilber(?).
Great teacher!!!
he is nice. lecture was easy and interesting. he always talk about J Lo >"<.. i got C for each exam. but he gave me an A end up of the semester. you must to show him that you are working hard!!! he didnt take the roster sheet, but he can memorized everyone!! dont ditch too many classes!!
WOW THIS GUY CANT TEACH. CANT UNDERSTAND WHAT HES TEACHING
he doesn't know how to teach....he is awful teacher..his grading is according to impression, not test score.....just jumping teaching, he makes us have headache.....i dont recommend.....

GOOD TEACHER .. HONEST.. JUST MAKE SURE YOU TAKE GOOD NOTES..
Good teacher who teaches the material clearly. Tests are not too long or difficult. Work hard and you will get an "A".
GREAT ! GREAT TEACHER ! U SHOULD TAKE AND NEVER AVOID HIM BECAUSE MATH 170 IS THE ONLY HIM ,
Applied Caculus. Very hard, Extremely hard. Don't take his class. What he teaches and what the book shows are 2 totally different things. Test too. His review does help only little. the pervious tests, won't aid either. He comes up with his own problems and never explain it thoughly. not recommanded at all.
He's a cool teacher who tells a lot of funny jokes but he doesn't explain things very well. If you read the book and pay attention in class, it's an easy A. Nice guy!
He's cool
I basically paid to teach myself math. It's a good thing the material in Math 50 is easy. I didn't learn much from him.
Nothing can prepare you for Esquivel's statistics. Not even the book. You will have to learn from the mistakes you did on your tests. That is the only method I found that helped in preparing for the final. The class is easy at first, but gets very challenging towards the end. Oh and you wont survive without a TI-83 or 84.
very easy to get an A.
I DONT RECOMMEND HIM AT ALL. HE DOESNT EXPLAIN GOOD AND YET HE EXPECTS YOU TO KNOW EVERYTHING. HE TOLD ME NOT TO WORRY AS LONG AS I DO MY WORK THAT I WOULD PASS THE CLASS AND YET I HAVE TO RE-TAKE IT AGAIN. OH HELLL NOOOO DONT TAKE HIM TAKE SOMEONE ELSE NOT RECOMENDABLE!!!!!!!!!!
He gets paid to teach and not to tell jokes and stories, which is all he seems to be good at. His lectures are poor and only last about 10 minutes. The rest of the time is wasted on worksheets. He doesn't follow the book or accept the book's methods on a test. Its easy to get lost in his class. Take statistics with another professor.
Just a waste of my time. All he did was tell stories about himself that had nothing to do with statistics. Asking him questions only led to the response "read the book." I was getting nowhere with his class, so I got a W and took the class at Citrus where I earned an A. Now I only regret that I didn't drop the class sooner to avoid the W.
I keep hearing about how he wasn't a good teacher. He was very helpful. Needed help he came through. It depends on the student. He went over and over problems and I personally do not think he did bad.
You have to show up to class since he teaches with his own material. Most of the quizzes/tests are open notes if not buddy or take home. Sounds easy but it's actually more difficult that you think. You need to understand the full concepts in order to do well. If you pay attention in class and take EXCELLENT notes, you show do well.
People claim that he's a smart professor but wait til you actually apply Calculus in advance courses. He goes through 1 chapter per class session and expects u to understand it right at the lecture. He doesnt give u a clear understanding about integrals and derivatives rather his teaching is all based on calculator instead of calculus theorems
I think he was a good professor. He really took ownership to try and get people participating. Everyday he asked for questions and materials we were confused about. It got kind of tough toward the end but the notes and quizzes he constantly gave were helpful. I agree that he doesn't teach by the book but he's method is ALL calculator, great huh? :)
If you want to be stuck at Rio Hondo forever, then take this professor. I can't believe his teaching methods at all. He seems to be good at telling jokes than teaching. Sadly, he doesn't even tell good jokes.
Like many said before me, he spent too much times telling not funny jokes. Half of the time being in the class I feel like I was taking PE, because he coaches more than he teaches. No office hours is offered for help, and he also tells you that the tutors from the tutor center are usually helpless. "So go home and pray" har har!
Esquivel is a unique character! It is key to pay attention to every detail in this class. He wants to see your positive progress towards the end of the class. Yes he does joke around a lot and make us feel as if his class is hell. I suck at math and I still got a B. Stats is more reason and logic compared to your typical calculus class...
I took him for stats, solid teacher. Trust me he's the best teacher to take for stats if you want to pass the class with at least a 'C' just "try" on test and quizzes!!
You'll either love him, or hate him. He has a dry sense of humor, and is intimidating at first. If you need help, he'll help you. All he wants to see is the student try to understand the concepts and material. He doesn't use the book much so don't bother tryn to memorize how the questions are asked & what test to use in the calc. He makes up his ow
He is the only easy teacher for stats, just try the test and hw show your effort on the test, he don't grade on the score, he grading on how much you showing your effort.
Totally love him, cool math teacher even tho some time i didn't get his joke such as How Cow's Fart relate to Global warming. Easy Class
amazing teacher! he was clear, hilarious, and helpful.
do homework, dont leave blanks on tests and laugh at all his jokes and you should be good. get on his good side and your should pass.
Not helpful at all! He just tells jokes. and when you do ask for help all he can say is "no hablo ingles" and doesn't teach you how to get an answer or how to do a problem just says "look in the book"
This teacher is awful! He gets off on intimidating students when a question is asked. Ask urself- do you want to actually understand stats or squeak by with a C? Read the rest of the comments. Personally, can't stand this teacher. Invest your time & money with another teacher. Wish I would have taken heed to the other comments before taking him.
Prof. Esquivel would make one heck of a Univ. Counselor, yet choose to teach Stats and is horrible at it. He has his own teaching method, does not explain himself well, and humiliates you if you ask any questions. If you are a favorite you will get an A, everyone else will pass but you learn very little. Quizes often, open book and notes on exams.
This guy is cool. I personally hate all math. This dude made it interesting and he's got a good sense of humor. Everything is open book. Just do your home, dont leave any blanks and you'll pass. make an effort to stay after class for some clarification and he'll know you actually care. TAKE VERY GOOD NOTES, AND LOTS OF THEM.
He is a great teacher. These people were the ones sitting in the back TEXTING!!Just show up to class, do the bit of homework he gives and show up on test dates...all he asks is to try!!If you just show up you will pass with a C. He is funny and helps if you ask for it.
If you show up to every class meeting, take notes, and (here's the tricky one)PAY ATTENTION!!! there is no reason why you shouldn't get an A. He knows what he's talking about and he dumbs it down for people who are not that great in math. Exams are open book and he grades you on your progress of learning the material. In my opinion he's good teache
I toke him in the summer but everything went well. He is an awesome person and makes math fun and easy:)
Good or Bad ratings wont help if you have to take Stats. This is what will help you in Statistics. 1st do Chtr homework the week B4 being taught. 2nd take a lot of notes. Homework can be used on exams and notes will tie back to exam. Show up everyday. You set the difficulty. If you want more in depth then do more homework.
He is a great teacher. I hate stats I took it 3 other times and had to drop but Mr. Esquivel walks you right through it. You have to show up and take good notes. I was so glad I took him!
Im taking him rite now and he is a lazy as teacher who dont know how to teach he is more of showing and ask what step you dont understand. His T.A is more helpful if you take him and dont understand go to tutoring promise he teaches better than his lazy as. We are dismissed 45 min before class is suppose to end. Bad as teaching!!!!
This is a hard class no matter who the teacher is. I felt he didn't really teach the class that you have to take really good notes from book. His notes really dont help. He gets frustarded with the class when they dont understand.
Did not enjoy the class I felt like he put students down when he teaches it doesn't explain step by step the buddy test suck because sometimes the other buddy doesn't know anything so you have to meet someone who knows there stuff
Don't get me wrong, personally, this teacher is really cool. But professionally this guy is bad at teaching. Remember there are 10x better teachers out there. He grades base on your attendance and your "effort." FFS how does that work? Personally, i have always loved math, but i hated this class. Plus, he gets mad if students ask questions. WTH?LOL
Did not enjoy this class or the teacher. I never missed a class, asked questions and did not get answers. Just didn't teach much.
Just do all your hw and projects and he will pass you. Also, show up everyday and show your work on the tests. I did not do very well on my tests and still got a B, because of the effort I showed.
This guy is awesome. He always walked me through any problems after class. Because its not fair to all students to be held up by any one student. This guy is real and a legit teacher. The tests are open book. He lets you use there notes. So take lots of them and be organized.Attendence is a plus cause this guy wants to see an effort. Funny Gu
He was cool never paid attention in class and still got an A
He is not a nice teacher at all. He has a smart mouth and isn't helpful. He does let you use all your notes on your tests but he makes sure the tests are beyond hard. He doesn't like when you ask questions in class. If stats is hard for you, don't take him. If it's easy for you, take him. you will pass.
he sucks. straight up.
HARD CLASS!!!!!!!! Teacher isn't a good teacher but if you show up to every class you should be fine! and DO all hwk and all projects and listen. Its a hard class!!!!!
Very hard class! He lets you use notes and text book for test but test are still super hard!! I never had a clue what I was doing. He doesn't use a grading system it's all based on HW, projects, attendance and how much effort you show on your test. Overall I enjoyed his class, he has good jokes!
I took this class over the summer. The professor is a super cool guy, but he doesn't spend a lot of time teaching, but he did allow us to use our notes in class. I was VERY happy with that, but that being said, he tends to throw difficult problems in the test. First 10 mins of class goof off, then quiz, then he teaches, assigns homework.
as long as you show effort do the hw and show up to class you'll be fine. He doesnt really answer questions when you ask him after class is over so in that aspect your kind of on your own but he's a funny guy and does explain things during class. overall it was an ok class and i actually enjoyed taking math :)
Funny but confusing professor. Would not recommend if you don't have a firm grasp on the subject as he belittles those who asks questions. Picks favorites, so participate a lot and you're bound to get a good grade. Much of the grading is decided by him as opposed to the work shown, allows notes and book on the test, very helpful!
Good teacher, VERY CONFUSING! I love math and this class was very hard. He lets your use textbook and all of your homework and notes on the test. Participate and you will do well.
Mr. Esquivel does not teach. If you are not a math person, I highly recommend you take someone else because he will not explain so that you understand. He leaves it up to you to figure out how to do the handout's he passes out. You are on your own to teach yourself how to do math. You can use the book and your notes during tests.
Mr. Esquivel is really funny & makes a lot of jokes but doesnt teach that much. He leaves it on the class to figure it out. Can use homework notes and book on the test & I think its like that because he know he doesnt teach. First day of the semester class was packed and he addeded everyone. Last day of semester class was 70% gone.
Stats can be tough, but Esquivel makes it easier. He's pretty easygoing, doesn't require a ton of homework, only as much you want to do to get the material. Don't take that as license to not do anything, because Stats is no joke. Can use notes, book and HW for tests so take good notes. Overall I would definitely recommend taking him for Stats.
Overal he does not teach.. Lets u figure it out on your own, im personally good in math but the class is too hard to learn it on my own so i will be droping the class, i go to class twice a week hoping to learn something and he wont teach, what he does is ask the class if u got any questions and if u ask he gets mad and put you on the spot ;(
lets u use book and notes on all tests including final!
He doesn't know how to teach at all, you will be on ur own. He is unorganized and make things hard to understandable. Good teacher should inspire his students, but all he does just make fun of you. Really don't recommend him. He should learn that how to be a good person first.
He is easy going and not a strict teacher but that's where the good ends. Yes all his exams are open book but it doesn't help that nothing correlates between the textbook and his exams, not even the class notes! He also doesn't teach according to text so it's hard to reference the textbook when you need help yet he assigns stuff from there!
DO NOT TAKE HIM, people say he's an easy going guy and that he passes everyone, that might be so but you learn absolutely nothing!!! his notes are all over the place, he doesn't go by the book and yeah the test are open notes/book but that being said his test are all over the place, if you going to take someone I recommended Gill!
AVOID!! I'm a 4.0 student. Nightmare professor that will kill your GPA. Tests don't match the book. Open notes don't help because the notes don't make sense and don't match the test!! F students like him because he bumps them up to a C. Good students however should stay away. Even with VERY hard work you will probably not get an A. STRESSFUL!!
He lets you use the book, notes and calculator on all the tests including the final. A students should receive an A and everyone else receives a decent grade but you HAVE to try at least. Hes observant and he takes notes on you! Do not use your phone or direct attention away from his lectures. overall I would take one of his classes again
Super funny. He's really nice once you get more into the class. Once you ask a question he explains it, all open notes, mymathlab thing sucks. Over all good class.
SUPER FUNNY AND COOL GUY. HE HAS OPEN NOTES AND BOOK ON ALL HIS TEST. CLASS IS EASY GOING AND HE IS A VERY HELPFUL. YOU HAVE HOMEWORK BUT YOU COULD USE IT ON TEST DAYS AS WELL... HE GRADES YOU ON HOW WELL GET THE WORK AND ON THE WORK YOU PUT IN...SO PUT IN THE ORK AND YOU WILL PASS!
Cool professor... Professor Ray would love to help you if u have any question. English is not my first language, I got A in the end by working hard. all you need to do is following his instruction. ALl exams is open-book, so take good notes.
This class was easy. I sometimes studied and sometimes understood the material, but I always did all of my work. Ray is a nice professor, very funny, and gives good transferring advice. I would recommend the class if you don’t like math and just want to understand the basics of statistics.
Professor doesn't provide the best and organized lectures, and does go off topic sometimes, but hes a really nice guy. hes also pretty funny sometimes. Only used the book for HW, and the other half is online. if you struggle in math i recommend to take another professor. if you only do the HW and you will pass but with a C- at best,
I hate math, but I did EVERYTHING ray suggested to get an A. make sure to chop it up with him to show that you care. go to tutoring and you will be fine. be specific on his tests.... thanks ray never would have transferred w out your help
Mr. Esquivel had me confused at times. The material from the book didn't add up to his exams or notes. He knows his information but it doesn't come out as smoothly as a student would like. I still passed the course with a B. Which I'm glad! The stress level might seem unbearable at times but if you stick it out until the end you will be okay.
His class grading system saved my grade, basically tests are only 30%, and the rest are in class assignments, written&MyMathLab homework, attendance and a few projects. His philosophy was that he teaches the basic idea, and then you go practice, bc the tests ask things differently or ask for an element of his in class examples. Take him to pass!
Awesome Professor. Very easy to understand. Crystal clear explanations. Would definitely enroll in his courses again.
Esquivel WANTS you too pass! Believe me when I say this, math is not my strongsuit and I struggled the whole semester taking this course, but I showed up every day and took my notes. I found myself discouraged at my exam grades (they almost all came out to be 65%.) I find myself chuckling in the end I ended up getting a B in the course. HANDLED!
Ray Esquivel. In a nutshell this man is a no BS professor who engages the students from all walks of life. Statistics is by no means an easy class, however, Prof. Esquivel is not interested in letting you fail the course! Come to class (on time!) do your HW and projects and there should be no reason why you shouldn't pass. Show effort and you will
It's difficult to narrow down my experience, I struggled throughout the entire course but ended up with a decent grade. I received D's on every single exam but I think he knew I was working hard to pass. This guy wants you to pass! Notes and attendance are crucial, he sees you're trying and your grade will reflect your efforts. Really funny guy too
Would not recommend. hard to stay motivated throughout the semester when the prof does not care. You have a better chance at learning the subject on your own very confusing.
Proffesor Esquivel really cares that all his students pass. if you really want the A you have to prove that to him. His teaching skills are very adaptable only if your willing to pay attention and focus in class. Do all projects, show up to class, and take every test and youll be fine. I really recommend him to those whos struggle in STATS.
Mr. Esquivel gave me an A but I left his class knowing nothing. I spent 90% of my time in the math lab. His lectures are all over the place. He doesn't provide SLOs. If it wasn't for the tutors or math lab then I wouldn't have passed the class. Our tax dollars pretty much pay for him to say, "Go to the mathlab."
At first this class may seem really hard but honestly he is a great teacher and very considerate at times. Just make sure to show up every day to class, do ALL your homework and projects that he assigns, take ALL the tests and you will pass the class forsure!
Professor Esquivel definitely wants you to participate in his class by attending every single meet, completing ALL assignments, doing your best on the exams (you don't need to pass them just try) and putting in time at the math lab. Do these four things and you will walk away with a satisfying grade. His lectures are poor but he is entertaining.
Professor Esquivel definitely wants you to participate in his class by attending every single meet, completing ALL assignments, doing your best on the exams don't leave blanks and putting in time into attending tutoring. He's very inspirational, funny and makes class fun.
Mr. Esquivel was very specific as to what his expectations were since the beginning of the semester. Attend every class, don't be late, put in time at the math lab, do every homework assignment and try your best on all the exams. I followed his expectations, and my exam grades weren't that good, but I still walked away with a decent grade.
Stats is hard but even more harder if you take it with Professor Esquivel, You have to teach almost everything yourself or attend lab in order to learn the material. Not an easy class, you have to push your self to get a good grade.
Took him Fall 2017 he is a Nice and Inspiring Professor but test are hard. I actually learn something in his class but for some reasons all my test score were bad should have drop when I had the chance now im stuck getting a Bad grade. Go to tutoring and you might pass, good luck.
His lectures are helpful. Test are the usual some problems are easy some hard study the notes and calculator steps. I stressed all semester, my test scores were not the best I went to every single class lecture and did every quiz and project. I was not expecting to pass but I did. Thanks to his way of grading i'm transferring. Good luck everyone.
His lectures are all over the place. I never understood anything in his class. You basically have to teach yourself or go to the tutoring everyday. I missed one day throughout the semester and I received a C for missing one class. So with that said don't miss any classes. Make sure he also gives you the grade you deserve!
Ray is such a great Professor, he helped me better understand Statistics. However, pay attention to lectures or you will be lost. In class assignments are pretty easy. Tests are okay. his stories are very interesting.
If you show up and do the work you will pass. He cares a lot about you passing and transferring to a good school. Its a fun class because of his stories and jokes. Open book open notes tests and exams. Buddy quizzes too.
Professor Esquivel will pass you if you try! His lectures are all over the place but his humor makes up for it. His goal is to pass everyone who tries even when theyre not doing so well. Be prepared to get a lot of worksheets that you probably wont need/use. Be prepared to study and be in the MSC.I didnt do well on any of my tests and I passed
lectures are all over the place and you will be very confused. he wants you to pass trust me! I did terrible on all the tests and still managed to pass. I went to a lot of workshops at the MSC like he advises you to do so. do the hw and go to class! trust me you will pass if he sees you trying.
Professor Ray Esquivel, Is a person that challenges you but does care for you to pass Statistics; if you reach out to him he is there for you. He makes Stats fun I was really bad at Math but dedication, a paid tutor, and especially spending time at math lab you just won't go wrong just take notes and find a tutor that you understand is key.
Mr. Esquivel was the perfect stats professor. To begin, stats isnt an easy class, but at the end of the semester he curved your grades. He also grades on effort made by students I.e. going to tutoring, asking for help, etc. I ended the semester with an A based on effort. Most memorable professor at Rio. He and his humor are missed!
