this man knows a lot about epidemiology, but he struggles with teaching it. the 1st and final exams are simple so take advantage of that, but exam 2 will kill you no matter what. you must always attend class and read the packet or it's impossible to make sense of his lectures. lean on the t.a. and don't give up and you can still get an A.
Dr. Merrill is funny and smart. He has a dry sense of humor, class was generally enjoyable to sit through. This was one of my favorite public health classes by far. The tests aren't too hard, he lets you bring in a cheat sheet for the exams and the second one is take home.
His class isn't too hard. Understand the lecture notes and all the homework questions and you'll be prepared for the tests. He's a pretty relaxed and fair teacher, and sometimes goes off on interesting tangents.
Professor Merrill has a dry sense of humor, but he is a really awesome guy who loves what he does. You can go get help from him pretty much any time during the day. Everyone says that the 2nd test is hard, but come on, it is a TAKE HOME EXAM. You can look up the answers. You can always have a cheat sheet with the 1st and final exams as well.
I liked prof. Merrill alot, but he was gone a large chunk of the semester. The TA was rad though so it made up for it. The class was somewhat easy, cheat sheet for exams 1 and 3. 2 is take home and yes it sucks. The rest is quizzes (7), a paper at the end of the semester, and a group presentation (which was really easy). Overall I liked the class.
Super teacher! Very funny when you understand his jokes. He is very fair and at times lets his students decide on their assignments. Great Teacher!
Dr. Merrill is a genius, and really knows his stuff, but can often talk over the student's level of understanding. He is very fair though, and will negotiate with you. Tests are not easy, but you can have a cheat sheet. He teaches almost every class in the Epidemiology track, so learn quickly about his teaching style.
Study the workbook, 75% of the quiz questions/answers come directly from the HW in the workbook. Exams are open book, study esp Test 2 bc the Final is comprehensive and it will be pretty easy
Dr. Merrill is probably pretty smart and seems to know a lot about epidemiology, but he is awful at teaching and explaining and is super unprofessional. The books are also written by him so that is tricky. Nice guy, but his teaching style was hard for me... But the class is passable
I thought Dr. Merrill was absolutely hilarious. Tough subject matter, but he made it interesting. No homework, I thought his grading style was really easy, though I didn't feel like I learned the material very well. I would recommend him though.
Worst professor but there is no other choice for this class. He is an ineffective and very boring teacher. This class did not teach anything related to the topic it is supposed to cover. Avoid this professor if at all possible. Most miserable experience at BYU was this man's class.
HORRIBLE professor. I've never had a class so boring and unorganized and just overall confusing. No study guides or lesson outlines or handouts to help facilitate learning. Thinks students can read his mind and pull formulas out of thin air. NOT helpful at all and NOT a fair grader. AVOID HIM LIKE THE PLAGUE.
Absolutely awful. Online BYU course. No study material aside from horribly written book. Can't contact teacher. The test questions seem meant to trick you so that you would have to pay to re-take the test. Little to no examples in book. You have to teach yourself the material from any other source you can find. Just dreadful.
The class is boring and the professor is not very fair in his grading. I somehow ended with a A-, but everything was very confusing in this class. He doesn't explain the material well and in quizzes and exams you find questions he didn't really cover. Hated this class and I wasn't the only one.
Toughest class I have ever taken. The only resources he gives you are the confounding textbook written by him. It rambles and is unorganized. The quizzes and tests are on nitpicky items from the text. I thought this class would be a piece of cake, which is why I chose to take it online. Save yourself the extra tuition and take it from Brianna.
I just made an account on here to rate Dr. Merrill. I feel it my duty to save anyone I can from this class. Nice guy, but avoid classes from him at all costs. It is the most unclear class I have ever taken.
Please don't take any class from him ever. It will likely be the most painful class you ever take.
This course was difficult, but its because it requires you to do the work and to know the material. Attendance wasn't counted for our evening class, but if you don't go the tests and homework will be more difficult. He is sometimes difficult to communicate with but is honestly willing to help you if you ask. He is a genuine guy and will help you.
Dr. Merrill is hilarious and goes on very amusing rants during his lectures. He's obviously a super smart guy but his research is better than his teaching and it's obvious he only teaches so he can do his research. He's available and willing to help his students, which is good because the class can be super confusing.
Pros/Cons: Pros: -Dr. M is really kind -Not a ton of homework -Three exams (two are take-home) -Material is easy enough to not stress missing class -Clear grading, extra credit Cons: -Dr. M is really boring, -Take-home exams are time consuming (3-4 hrs.) -You have to buy 2 books -written by prof- to access HW's and exams
Dr. Merril is incredibly intelligent, kind, and genuine. This class follows his well-written books and his question style for exams does not differ from what is in the books. He is always available to help if needed and explains things well one-on-one. This class does require effort but is a totally doable A. Great intro to Epi.
Take Dr. Merrill! He's funny, caring, and really smart. He wants students to do well and offers lots of extra credit. I thought his class was so much easier than Magnussons sounded! Honestly it wasn't a ton of work and it wasn't a hard class, just go to class and pay attention and use the TA! He lets you use notes on tests sometimes
Nice enough guy, but a pretty dry lecturer. He also tends to go off on tangents that have nothing to do with what he's lecturing about that day. You do feel every minute of his hour and a half long class. I didn't feel like his class was valuable to my time. You could read the powerpoints and get just about the same thing.
I would take his class Over Magnusson. He lets us use a page of notes both back and front of paper. Yes his lecture is a bit dry but his first exam is taken in class (yes can have notes) and the second and third exam is take home. Homework isnt too bad and you can do it ahead of time. The final exam is tough (can have notes) but didnt put on LS!!
Dr. Merrill goes off on so many tangents. He is one of the most dry lecturers I have ever had. I felt like his class was often a waste of time. There raen't very many assignments, but the ones that he has are worth a ton of points. Choose someone else! Unless you don't mind falling asleep in class.
Dr. Merrill is a nice enough man, but his lectures were dry and tangential. He did not even give out a syllabus. They're aren't very many assignments, so they are worth a lot of points. The exams aren't too hard (he lets you have notes) but the final was ridiculously hard (even with a page of notes). I found him unprofessional as well.
No syllabus. No rubric for any assignments. Dry lecturer who often presents material in a way that is hard to understand. Very hard to get a hold of outside of class and does not answer emails. Picky grader with very vague expectations of what he is looking for on assignments. One of the worst professors I ever took a class from at BYU.
I have nothing against Prof Merrill as a person. Nice guy. But I couldnt learn from him. Goes off topic a lot and he just read his slides and then expected you to know how to use a bunch of formulas and code that we didnt practice or learn in class. I used the book to try and help me. Helped a little. Make friends to help you with the homework.
Dry lecturer, material covered in class not representative as to what is on exams (even when stated that it will be), not accessible to help. On positive - is apt to change a grade if most argue about the answer. Overall, I took a 600 level class and still don't understand any of the material...
Dr. Merrill is a great guy. I really had some good conversations with him. He is helpful if you come into his office, but his lectures were really hard to understand. I got a D in the class even after doing all the homework and reading. He is funny and a great guy, just a real rough class.
Hard. Fair. One of the most stretching classes I've taken. He makes getting a good grade very straightforward. However, the class is a tough subject material. Dr. Merrill is caring, kind and wants to help you succeed.
Prof. Merrill doesn't teach very well. He'll just read off of his slides and then have things you never talked about on the homework and tests. His tests took me at least 5 hours and I never felt like I learned anything. I bought the textbook but never used it, I found the internet to be more helpful.
Dr. Merrill is one of the nicest professors I have met. He is always willing to help you with the homework or answer questions. While attendance during COVID isn't required it is very helpful. It isn't the most exciting class and he sometimes expects you to have a background in stats. But this class is very doable if you spend 1-2 hours a week.
I never felt like I learned anything in his class. His lectures were so dry and boring it was hard to pay attention. I completed homework using the internet/textbook. He's a nice guy and willing to help students, he is just a horrible teacher and it's so hard to learn from him in class. This class was half online, and zoom lectures were 10x worse.
He is a good teacher but a few concepts could be explained better. The tests and homework take a lot of time
Okay I feel for Dr. Merrill, because he is nice and is available outside of class, but I did go to see him once and even then it was hard to understand the way he was explaining the homework. His lectures are dry. I did well in the class but its mostly because Ive taken Statistics in high school and I took Stat121 before. TAs wouldve been great
Professor Merrill clearly has a passion for what he does. He showed us some very cool findings from various studies, including an amazing number of his own! Dr. Merrill was very willing to help students and provided various extra credit opportunities that made the class very doable.
Definitely pay attention to the lectures as this course can be a bit intense for those who dont know excel very well. Overall, well explained and lots of opportunities for extra credit. Great class!
Dr. Merrill is an extremely intelligent professor. His knowledge of his craft amazes me. I didnt perform the best in his class because Im not great at statistics and numbers in general. The class was more quantitatively heavy than I anticipated. Essentially an easier STATS 121. Dr. Merrill is always willing to work with you and very kind.
Professor Merrill is very patient and kind!! He took time to address the needs of every student that went into his office for help. I really struggled to understand the concepts and in result I did a lot worse than I thought I would on the final, but being a blended class due to covid-19 did make it a little more difficult to grasp concepts.
Dr. Merrill is incredibly nice and loves what he teaches. However, the lectures can be pretty dry and the content can be pretty confusing if you don't already know statistics. The tests are also pretty difficult and take a long time even though they were open-note. He is always willing to help outside of class though!
I think this class was very challenging because of the format, however, Professor Merrill did try to give chances for extra credit to make up for the gap. This class is mandatory for most PH majors, so I can't say to avoid it but I would suggest being aware from the start that it is hard to get an A in this class.
Dr. Merrill is a cool guy. He's pretty funny and makes a lot of dry jokes during class, and you can tell he tries to make it interesting. He's also very helpful if you email him for help. In class he usually goes over the homework and gives answers. The class is a lot of work but it's not too bad.
We didnt have that many assignments but the ones we did have were very tough! I read and reread the textbook, watched YouTube videos and even then I still couldnt figure out how to do it right. Excel is very helpful and having a study group is helpful too!
Dr. Merrill is one of the kindest professors I've had at BYU. He is very knowledgeable and it is clear that he is passionate about his work. He wants his students to succeed. He is great at responding to emails and at being available outside of class. Make sure to put in the effort on the homework and quizzes and the tests should not be too bad.
The ideas behind this class are hard, but Dr Merrill allows you to do lots of extra credit and will help you with every assignment. He is a really sweet guy.
Dr. Merrill is a genuine professor and knows the material very well. He's a very fair grader and will always review homework and tests when needed. The workload is manageable, and the tests are kind of tough but fair; it's all open-note so if you pay attention in class and review the book/slides, you should do fine.
Not too much work. There are a few homework assignments, a project, test and final. Tests were open book but you need to take notes in class for it to help you. Test wasn't too bad, but the final took a really long time to complete. (4 hrs) Overall pretty good class.
He is a good person but his teaching method is not the best. The way he teaches is very confusing. You'll have to do work on your own to be fine with the content. He cares though about you so that's good.
Dr. Merrill is a super great guy. I enjoyed his class and getting to learn from him. I especially liked the excel content but that may just be me. Dr. Merrill is funny and strives to keep class entertaining. He really is one of the nicest professors you will have!
Dr. Merrill is very genuine and loves his field of work. The lectures are dry but he goes through the homework and shows exactly how to do it. Others are saying tests are hard, they're not. They take a long time, but you can usually find answers word for word in the textbook and they are open note/book. He is also very helpful if you need it!
Prof. Merrill is a very respectful and kind. I felt that he is always fair in the assignments he gave us, but sometime felt we weren't well prepared for them. His lectures were also a little dry, but overall his class was enjoyable. Cares a lot about his students
Dr. Merrill is a great professor! The class was half online so it was a little confusing, but he made sure to be available for any questions we had. He takes time in class to go over homework assignments when there are lots of questions. Overall I felt like he really cared about the students success and I would take another class from him!
Professor Merrill is an extremely smart professor who knows what he is doing. It can be hard to understand some of his points because he goes on tangents a lot. This class was very hard for me to grasp but Prof Merrill is really good about helping students outside of class. He is very accessible. You have to put in a lot of work!!
Professor Merrill was very accommodating to me, so I'm sure he would be flexible for other students too! Barley any assignments, so you need to make sure you do well on all of them.
Dr. Merrill may not be the most interesting professor youve ever listened to, but the man knows his stuff and is really generous with his grading and the information he shares in the lectures
The class this semester was half online and half in person, so it was pretty rough. And while the class sucks and Merrills lectures could be a little confusing, he was always there to offer a bit of extra credit to help with scores or even did some of the homework problems in class when we were confused. He even helped us fill out the study guide.
Dr. Merrill is a very intelligent and nice professor. However, his teaching style was quite dry and his lectures got very confusing very fast. Taking detailed notes is essential in this class, although I still felt unprepared for the tests. Although this class is very difficult, he is willing to work with you outside of class.
Prof Merrill is a really knowledgable professor in his area and although the lecture are not super exciting you do learn a lot! There are a few assignments and quizzes, so make sure you do well on them. He is easy to access outside of class and willing to help and give feedback on all your assignment!
This was one of the more frustrating classes I've taken at BYU. With the blended format during COVID it was really difficult to learn the material, so make sure you use the textbook and a good study group to learn. Also make sure you have access to excel. Dr. Merrill is willing to help outside of class and usually offers extra credit.
Dr. Merrill is a nice guy but the structure of his class was HORRIBLE for me. He didn't have TA's at all, which would have been helpful. Lectures seemed unnecessary so it was easy to skip and then get behind. Probably a doable class if you do it right, but something about it makes it seem like you can do well without much effort so don't be fooled!
Professor Merrill is so caring and adapted timing based on our needs. The lectures can feel long, especially on Zoom days, but he let us come in person when there was room. You can use the book and Excel on homework and tests. (He makes Excel spreadsheets with most of the formulas we need!) He often went over homework questions before they were due
Professor Merrill is a good man and is very knowledgeable about the material that he teaches. He was pretty prompt at answering questions and offers help. Definitely would have been more helpful if I would have taken a STATS class so at least I could have had that background. The exams were brutal and everyone struggled hardcore.
COVID-19 made taking the quantitative portion of HLTH 313 online really difficult. Really helpful if you already have basic knowledge of Excel. I could tell Dr. Merrill tried his best to teach a difficult subject during a difficult time, but there was some discrepancy between what was taught and what was tested. Overall, Dr. Merrill is great.
Nice guy, but awful class. He had a massive project & 2 final exams. Reviews covered maybe 10% of the material on the exam. Class was boring & exams were impossible. He took 8 weeks to grade our final project. I didn't sign up for him as a professor but he taught the first term. This was the least organized course I have ever taken.
He is very kind and sweet, but his lectures are confusing. The test questions are also in a way that many of the answers could be correct. There were no TAs to help on anything either.
Professor Merrill knows what he's talking about. Online adjustments were difficult all around but he did a good job. Lenient if you have a concern or question about an assignment. His lectures aren't the most interesting but he knows what he is talking about and gives you what you need to understand the concepts and get a good grade.
Professor Merrill really tried to make the class work during the pandemic but the course was extremely difficult. He expected you to know WAY more about statistics than just being an introductory course. SUPER hard to stay on top of it and know what to do throughout the course. I was lost constantly.
Dr. Merrill is an incredible individual and a genius in his field. If you're interested in a career in epidemiology I highly recommend him, however, I felt his lectures were lackluster, making it hard to focus. This blended course was taught by two teachers and had very few assignments so his half of the course is based mainly off tests.
Dr. Merril is incredibly calm but funny. Assignments and most exam questions are directly from the textbook and lectures. He is always available to help if needed. You would have to put in a little effort and you will be fine.
This is a professor that really knows his stuff, and sometimes it is hard to catch on to what his stuff was. The class was organized pretty well, but man... the actual stats were hard to follow along with and replicate. If you are good at EXCEL (which I am very much not), I think you'd do fine.
He is a nice guy. But his lectures are super slow and boring. The homework was difficult because they are unorganized. The test is open note but the questions are worded in a very confusing way.
Dr. Merrill's portion of HLTH 313 was centered a lot on the textbook and is very good at teaching what is on the tests during lectures. Make sure to either attend class or watch lecture recordings because all material is covered. assignments do take a little while to complete but he provides extra credit for participation in class
This class was honestly pretty difficult.
Dr. Merrill is a very smart man and a nice guy, his class is just very unorganized and hard to follow. The class is split into two parts, and I had him for the first part of the semester for the quantitative research. You have to learn a lot on your own, and figure out Excel which is not easy. The final exam was extremely difficult.
Dr Merrill is an expert in what he teaches and knows what he is teaching about. He cares about his students and is willing to give credit. Dr Merrill is lecture heavy as well as excel heavy but he shows everything that is tested on.
Dr. Merrill is a great professor and is passionate and well versed in the subject. His assignments and tests were straight forward and open note/open textbook. While attendance was not mandatory, I would recommend going to class because the information he gives in class is very useful for assignments, tests, and your overall grade.
This class was split between two professors which meant that there was a lot of extra work . If you pay attention in class you should be good with quizzes and homework. He is really straightforward about what he will quiz on and reasonable with expectations. It was lecture heavy, which was really hard on zoom.
Professor Merrill is so nice and is willing to work with students to help get a good grade and understand material. I took it when classes were online so it was so helpful to refer back to the lectures. It would be very hard if I didn't have the recorded lectures. We cover a lot but if you reach out to him, he will help you with any clarification.
Professor Merrill is very kind and is always available to help. He is even willing to stay late to assist you with the homework or other major assignments. His tests weren't my favorite and I felt like there were sometimes questions that didn't match the material we learned or were just very vague and hard to understand. Great guy though!
Prof Merrill really knows his stuff when it comes to excel. Teaching in class may be difficult to follow along to, especially over Zoom. There are few assignments in the class, so every point matters. Be familiar with the textbook, as the tests are open book, but the questions are tricky and require understanding of all the material.
Dr. Merrill taught this semester over zoom because of COVID. There were a few assignments that weigh heavily on your grade. He was very understanding and cares about his students he gave multiple opportunities to bring their grades up and improve. Miss the lecture and you will definitely be lost, when watching lectures he explains assignments well.
This year the pandemic did not help our circumstances but this class definitely requires a solid background in statistics. I struggled to understand the information taught in class but Professor Merrill genuinely wants you to succeed and will do what he can to make that happen. Definitely not an easy A. MAKE study groups with students in class!!!
Professor Merrill is incredibly smart, and goes through everything you need to know for the homework and quizzes/test. With that being said, don't underestimate the class (HLTH 313). Pay attention because the material is not easy, but if you pay attention and go to class, you will be prepared. He also gives a great into to using Excel.
It was a weird class set up with two teachers. I had to take it for my major but it was not fun. I had a hard time paying attention in class, and I honestly learned more in the tests than I did in the actual class, because the tests were open book so I just taught myself during the test.
Make sure to pay attention in lecture! A lot of what you need to know, he just gives a tutorial in excel. So you either have to go back and watch what he did or try to absorb every step as he goes over it. A lot of what you need to know is not in the slides or textbook.
Professor Merrill was great. You can pretty much get extra credit every day by answering questions. He goes through everything you need to do in class, so if you just go and pay attention to class you should be good, and he'll go over anything you don't understand if you ask .
Professor Merrill is so sweet! He is incredibly kind and you can tell he really cares about his students and wants them to succeed. He offers extra credit and let me redo a homework assignment after I did poorly on it. You learn a lot about how to use Excel and he always gives really interesting examples during class. Hes the best!
Dr. Merrill is very, very, caring and genuinely wants students to succeed. The course itself was very challenging, especially when half of the class was online. I think it would have been a much easier class if that was not a factor. Dr. Merrill loves to give extra credit points for pretty much anything, so talk during class!
Dr Merrill was very knowledgeable on the class material. His goal was to make sure we understood the work no matter how many times he had to go over it. The workload wasn't too heavy but I found the exams very difficult. There was a lot of technical difficulty in the class when doing class over zoom, which made it difficult to hear and participate.
Dr. Merrill is a great guy. He is intelligent, but is not able to portray a concept in the way that he wants to. The class was confused at the end of his lectures and he doesn't let the students ask very many questions. His tests were the hardest tests that I have ever taken. They were open book and open note, but by notes did not help at all.
Hlth 313 was split into halves and I only had Professor Merrill for the second half of the semester, but it was still really good. his lectures help a lot, but I learned mostly on my own about using excel for quantitative data analysis. There was an option to watch the lectures online, but i found it much more helpful to attend class in person.
Because of COVID the class was taught by two teachers so I had Dr. Merrill the second part of class. I'm so bad at excel but Dr. Merrill walks through the whole process and gives you so many examples that even if you are terrible at it you can still do the hw and tests! Overall, he's really great and a nice teacher!
This class was interesting because it was split between 2 professors. Professor Merrill covered the Quantitative portion. He knows a lot about Excel and the majority of the work you do will be in Excel, so if you don't know the basics, you'll have a hard time. Lectures can drag sometimes, but the tests are open book/note, which is so helpful!
Dr. Merrill is very kind and great with accommodations. He offers extra credit for participation which is nice. Taking this class lightly will make it terribly hard to catch up in the end, so do ALL of the practice problems (not just the graded ones). Doing this and preparing before class will allow you to get a good grade.
Dr Merrill is kind and accommodating. Do not slack off in this class because it will be super hard to catch up all at once. Try the practice problems before class, he will help you with the hard ones during class if you bring it up. Stay on top of things and ask for help if you don't understand bc it will be on the final.
Dr Merrill really knows his stuff. But I struggled a lot to actually understand and pay attention to what was happening in class because the lectures were a bit dry. The exams were difficult despite being open book. I was frustrated a lot. I think a lot of the problem had to do with half of class being online. But Dr Merrill is really nice.
Professor Merrill is a great professor and he knows a lot. I struggled some with this course because it is very excel heavy and some excel features required for the class are not accessible on chromebook.
His portion of the class requires sound knowledge of how to use excel- I would recommend taking a class that introduces excel in depth before taking his class. He is definitely a fair but tough grader, just in the sense that you may have to ask for clarification on things that may not have been explained clearly in lectures or on assignments.
The online semester was hard. Lectures were sometimes difficult to understand and went quickly. He was willing to help us outside of class though!
Dr. Merrill was very kind and willing to help students who asked. The hybrid structure of the class this semester (online and in person) made it really hard to grasp some of the more difficult concepts. The tests were open book, but I found them to be rather frustrating and they usually took me 4 or 5 hours to complete.
Awesome professor, material is straightfoward, fair grader.
The Good- always willing to further explain difficult subjects, easy to contact, willing to help when you are struggling Improvements- include more clear explanations of excel use, study guides for quizzes and exams
Ray is a good guy. Lectures can be dry at times and class will randomly get hard, but he wants you to succeed.
I think Dr Merrill is a solid teacher, his lectures can be slightly boring but it's because he is giving thorough explanations of the concepts. I like the information provided by his class but it was difficult to be in a hybrid class format. Really nice guy.
Dr merrill was very nice and gave lectures full of information, to the point they were a little dry sometimes. I thought his grading criteria could have been much more clear but I enjoyed his class and thought he did a fine job with the weird hybrid format.
Prof Merrill offers lots of extra credit options and will answer lots of questions you might have in class. However, his lectures are often dry and dense with material. You need to make sure to pay attention which can be hard, but if you understand excel the class is easy. If you have hw questions, ask in class he'll walk you through
Professor Merrill clearly knows the material/understands practical implications. Great to work with one-on-one. Super understanding, definitely wants students to do well. However, his lectures were very dry and confusing... he honestly wasn't the best at explaining things. His tests were super hard and took a loong time. Nice, not a great teacher.
Dr. Merrill was good about being available to students outside of class and he was very responsive to emails. His lectures are very dry and boring, there's not a lot of student interaction or discussion in the classroom. His homework was difficult and I always had to google the math problems. His final was poorly written, there were a lot of typos
Dr. Merrill did a great job teaching in such a strange semester. He makes sure that the class understands all the material and basically shows you how to do the assignments, tests, and quizzes. He is genuinely cares about his students learning the material rather than just passing.
Don't take this or any class from him. He is a good guy but I never understood anything he taught. Everything I learned was study sessions we would do as a class after his lessons. Doesn't respond to emails and wants your to be successful with no effort on his part. I never leave bad reviews but this was such a bad class.
I learned a lot with Dr. Merrill, but felt that the final was WAY too hard! I genuinely studied for it and still didn't do well, even after I did well on the homework and tests. He was a nice person and gave interesting lectures, but watch out for the final!!
Dr. Merrill is awesome! He is very caring and clearly wants to help you to do your best. I did find his class to be a little bit hard to follow. The homework and practice problems in the book seemed to be a lot easier than the questions on the tests.. A lot more explanation of principles that we were learning would have been helpful.
Dr. Merrill is a really nice guy, but not the best at explaining the subject. I think it's safe to say we were all confused on what we were doing. Tests are open book and open note, but unless you understand what you are doing, they do not help much. It wasn't the hardest class I have ever taken, but I definitely had to work for my A.
HLTH 447 is a useful but challenging course, but Dr. Merrill made the material much more manageable. He always takes the time to make sure that everyone knows what's going on, and is very approachable both in and outside class. I had a hard time with the material and his extra help made all the difference. Definitely recommend
Professor Merrill is a good and funny professor. This class was not difficult but can be if you miss class. It is very important to ask good questions and he will answer. Class is mainly just lecture, no activities. It is a very straight forward class- show up, take the quizzes or do the homework and then take the midterm- not much else.
I definitely would not take this class. The lectures are extremely boring with little to no class participation. I felt like we wasted time on things that weren't important and the important stuff was taught once and not touched on again. The exam was way longer and more difficult than it needed to be despite it being open book/note.
Dr. Merrill is very kind, approachable and knowledgeable. His lecture slides need more information because some topics do not stick or are hard to understand. The homework assignments are straight forward but theres no way to know if you are doing them correctly, easy to miss points. Overall the class isn't bad just not the best structure.
He's a good guy and cares about his students. It seemed like sometimes there was a lack of clarity which left many students including myself confused during most of the lectures. I had to get help from the TA for all my homework. If you pay close attention you'll be fine, and having some knowledge of excel would really help as we used it a ton.
Professor Merril was very kind. He was easy to reach out to and his TA was awesome for getting help with homework and stuff. However, he went through the lectures super fast, which made it really hard to keep up with the excel formulas he was teaching us. I had to figure a lot of them out on my own after class.
Professor Merrill is very kind and helpful when asked. The class is pretty straightforward and you are mostly graded on homework and a tests. If you attend class and get help from the TAs and Professor when needed it is easy to do well in the class.
Professor Merril is a great professor and cares about helping students, the class can get a bit boring sometimes but if you enjoy the topic, it is easy to follow along. Not too much homework, a few quizzes, and some work from the textbook. Make sure to practice and ask questions.
Dr. Merrill is an intelligent professor with a fun sense of humor. The class could get boring sometimes, but ask questions. He tries to explain things in different ways if you don't get it the first time, and he is very kind. Try to participate because you'll learn more and have a better time in class.
The lectures can tend to be a little dry, but he will cover the material you need to know. Just make sure to attend class because he goes over how to do the homework and how to succeed in the course.
Dr. Merrill was quick to help students and would explain how to do the homework in class. However, the lecture material could be unclear sometimes and I felt like I had to teach myself a lot about Excel. If you have a solid understanding of Excel you'll be fine. If not, it requires a lot more studying outside of class.
Very nice guy but doesn't really use enthusiasm to teach and the lectures can be pretty boring. I did not really receive a value of increased knowledge and more of just how to use excel.
Prof. Merrill was well informed and helpful, but his lectures were very boring and hard to follow. The final for this part of the class was very doable, with a good amount of studying. Pretty difficult, but doable.
Dr. Merrill is really kind and a fun professor, his lectures are not the most exciting, but it is better if you put in the effort to follow along and participate. He is very ready and willing to help if you have any questions.
Overall, this was a really good class. With it being an intro class, he did a good job on focusing on the basics and not overcomplicating it. He is very willing to help when you have questions, and running things by the TA is really beneficial for success.
He is a great person and he and the TA are more than happy to help you outside of class. Very kind atmosphere, but not great at explaining methods. I felt like I was teaching myself even though I went to every class period. Make sure you have a solid understanding of how to use excel and some statistics before taking this class.
For me, his teaching style wasn't engaging, so I couldn't/wasn't motivated to follow along with the lectures... super dry and long. Homework was hard -- if you get help from the TA it's doable. The textbook helps for some things, but not most. Overall, Professor Merrill is an awesome person and he's passionate about what he does, just not my style.
He's the nicest guy and willing to meet outside of class to help students, but his teaching style wasn't for me. If I hadn't taken stats 121 a couple of semesters before this class I would've been very lost. Be prepared for a lot of excel.
His lectures are good (very statistic heavy) but he is willing walk through everything in class. I think he understands it's just an intro class to quantitative data research and so he gives a lot of help with the homework and with materials he's already created. Tests and quizzes are open note and book.
Dr. Merrill's lectures are hard to follow at times, but he is good about answering questions asked in class. He is always willing to help with the homework/concepts outside of class too. The course subject itself is just a bit hard because it heavily involves using excel.
Lots of reading to do outside of class or else you won't know what is going on. Class time is the perfect time to ask questions about the homework/readings. Be sure you do the readings or else you will start to fall behind in the class.
Very vague. Very i dont even know. The quantitative half of the class that Dr. Merrill teaches is basically an excel class, but we spent a lot of class time watching him try to remember how to use excel for some basic functions. Even then, thats most of class time, and if you have a MacBook the ways to implement these functions is different,
Prof Merrill is so nice, but the most boring and ineffective teacher. Lectures were not engaging at all, so I was constantly struggling to stay awake. He kept things introductory, but if you have no previous experience with statistics or excel, it is extremely difficult. Especially if you have a Mac and not a PC. Power through and use the TA often!
Hard class but not impossible. You will fail if you miss this class other than that you can totally do this class and get a good grade.
Dr. Merrill is a really nice guy. He is very willing to go over questions in class but I often felt very lost because PPT isn't my thing. He also doesn't give very in depth explanations to questions via email. Thankfully the TA was super helpful in that regard or else I wouldn't have done as well. The homework and tests were really hard so ask q's!
Dr. Merrill was a great professor! I had him for HLTH 313 and some of the concepts are a little tricky. Just remember to read the book and ask lots of questions. Dr. Merrill was always willing to spend time to explain things further in class and outside of class. He is easily accessible by email! Make sure you do the Extra Credit.
Dr. Merrill's class is lecture heavy. Attendance isn't mandatory, but I wouldn't miss more than a few classes. The homework is pretty straight forward if you read the chapters. He is very accessible outside class if you email him. Very willing to meet outside class and make accommodations if necessary. He has a great sense of humor!
Dr. Merril is a nice guy but his class is pretty boring. I wasn't experienced with excel coming into the class and so that made really difficult. If you are taking this class, brush up on excel.
Professor Merrill is a super nice guy, genuinely cares about his students. Just make sure you are practicing the material outside of class to make sure you know how to use excel.
Professor Merrill was a great professor who always sought to make class interesting and enjoyable. Some of the concepts were pretty hard especially on the excel portion of the class and the midterm took most students 3-4 hours. Overall a very good teacher and always made sure we understood the concepts.
Prof Merril is a good teacher and there are so many opportunities to get a good grade in his class. His tests are open note and he provides all the resources needed to do well. But make sure you go to class. It is not required, but unless you are really good at stats and using excel sheets, you'll be completely lost on the homework.
Dr. Merril is super smart, kind, and a great professor
Ray is hilarious. He always goes on random tangents about mountains or lakes. The class itself is difficult if you do not put the work in. Pay attention, go to class, ask questions, read the textbook, and you will do well.
He is not a good professor he is kind and caring but he doesn't teach you how to solve the problems he shows you what he does to solve the problems so when you get a homework question or a test question you have to figure out how to do the question and alter what he showed you to fit. The average on the final was a 65ish because no one knew the how
Dr. Merrill is super nice but lectures were very dry and hard to pay attention to. The assignments also use Excel so if you don't have a PC (what he uses), it's very confusing. Attendance was taken a few times but it was never put in the gradebook. Overall it was okay, but I would've taken it from a different professor if I had to take it again.
Prof Merrill's class can be a bit dry, but he's genuinely helpful. The Excel assignments are tricky if you're not tech-savvy, but using unstuck AI alongside the textbook can really help with study prep.
This was Dr. Merrill's 466 class. He is super smart, kind, and a great professor. He is also very passionate about this subject.
This review is meant for HLTH 466! Professor Merrill is great! He is pretty lecture heavy, but he genuinely cares for his students and is very passionate about what he teaches. You'll learn a lot in his class!
Ray is a great guy. I enjoyed taking this class. It was not hard.
Dr. Merrill has a funny dry humor which is pretty entertaining. The content of this class was actually pretty difficult, but Dr. Merrill is helpful and willing to work with students.
He is very caring but sas is very confusing to learn so it makes the class difficult. Go to class and really take good notes and you will be just fine!
Ray is super cool guy. He recognizes the material is not easy for a lot of people to understand, so he does try to make it easy on you by making lots of things open-book/open-note. He also offers extra credit opportunities. He's very smart, so I think he sometimes glosses over small but important concepts because he's been doing this for so long.
Super kind and cares about his students. He gets distracted easily & is unclear during lectures & does not fully answer questions when asked. He wrote the textbook himself & all homework is sourced from it. Shows us how he did things on SAS, but doesn't explain how to solve a question. Material is tough & a solid study group is essential!
He teaches you how to analyze data using SAS Studio. Most students have never been exposed to SAS before, so the newness of learning how to use it is the biggest challenge. He is always willing to help students individually to help them better understand the material.
I think if you have taken Stat 121, or enjoy math/have some Microsoft Excel experience, then this class will be pretty straightforward. If you don't like math, then it will be more difficult, probably one of the hardest public health classes...but still a doable class. Dr. Merrill has dry humor and is a reasonable guy.
Dr. Merrill was a great professor, he is super easy to work with if you don't understand a concept. This is a mandatory course for the health science major but this class is interesting. You do need the textbook to do homework problems but most of the time he will go over all the questions so that you get full points.
Great guy, you can tell he really cares about his students. His lectures are a pretty boring, so be prepared with some caffeine or something to keep you awake. His tests are all open book, open online, which is so nice. He's really generous in giving points and helping if you don't understand what's going on.
Really nice guy who tries his best to help students get a good grade. That being said, I wish there were a couple changes. The lectures were often long and hard to follow. Coding was difficult and I wish there were clearer steps on how to do it. So, class could be better if there were handouts/procedures and clearer organization within the lectures
Dr. Merrill is very knowledgable about the material and is always willing to help students when they ask for help. That being said, the lectures can be tough to follow and don't always feel like they lead well into the homework and exams.
Prof. Merrill is one of the kindest humans you will ever meet. You can tell he genuinely cares for his students and wants them to succeed. While class isn't always the most exciting and can be confusing sometimes, if you ask for help he will definitely will help. Ask questions! Online resources can also help you understand the material better too.
This Professor is a great person, but I struggled to pay attention in his classes because I couldn't understand him. Worse, he wrote the textbook, so I couldn't go to the textbook to find clearer explanations. The nice thing is that he lets you use the textbook, the powerpoints, and the notes on exams and quizzes.
It is clear that professor Merrill knows his stuff but his lectures can be a little hard to follow. There is a bit of coding in the class which was not explained in great enough detail for me to always understand. Professor Merrill did make himself available to students whenever possible to provide assistance.
Dr. Merrill is very sweet and helpful if you are struggling in his class and go to his office hours. His lectures are boring, but overall it was an easy class with open book open note tests, and group homework options. Even though I rarely understood what was happening in class I still got a good grade
Dr Merrill knows his material and I can tell he is very smart. His lectures can be a bit confusing, but if you ask a lot of questions you'll get a better understanding. The exams are difficult, but he includes a lot of extra credit so that everyone gets an A or B. This class is harder than it appears at first, but it is not impossible.
Merrill teaches what you need to know and takes the time to clarify confusing concepts. While the lectures can feel long and a bit dull, his willingness to help students makes up for it.
Dr. Merrill is very kind and understanding. You can tell that he really cares about his students. He welcomes questions and is always willing to offer extra help. His lectures can be confusing. Difficult topics are not always explained super clearly, and I was often lost during class. Exams are open note. Extra credit is given for attending class.
Dr. Merrill's biostats class was alright. I was confused about the statistical and SAS coding a lot, but it's very possible to do well in this class. While the homeworks and exams are difficult, he offers a lot of extra credit so it balances. I do feel that if class was a little more structured, I could have learned to use SAS effectively.
Dr. Merrill is a great person, but I struggled with his lectures. He is brilliant but has difficulty teaching information, especially on complicated topics. One of the most challenging things for me was using SAS. He tells you the code, but I think a course on using SAS would be necessary before this class.
Professor Merrill is a really nice teacher! The biggest struggle of the class is learning how to code with SAS Studio, which most students have never used before.
Dr. Merrill is a smart professor and very experienced in research and communicating data. That being said, I think he assumed we knew how to utilize certain tools, like SAS, which made it hard to follow in class. The tests and homework are fairly difficult, but he gives many opportunities to ask questions in class and offers extra credit.
Dr. Merrill is a great guy and very intelligent, but is not the best teacher. Understand the concepts in this class are difficult, so I feel like I just had to figure it out on my own. I would have bombed the tests if I did not have good cheat sheets which are allowed.
Dr. Merrill is very caring and wants his students to succeed. He is accessible outside of class and offers extra credit. It is very possible to get an A in his class. I will say, his lectures are pretty dry. I have never had such a hard time paying attention in class. Also, it was difficult coming into a class that uses SAS with no prior training.
Dr Merrill definitely knows his stuff but doesn't do a great job of helping the students to understand it. The lectures were very hard to pay attention in and he primarily taught SAS by telling you the code to copy and paste in. This made quizzes and tests pretty difficult.
The only reason I did well in this class is because he offers a lot of opportunities for extra credit. He is so smart and such a nice guy, but he doesn't teach very well. I went to class but I was usually confused and had to figure a lot out on my own. However, he is accessible during office hours and willing to try and help.
Difficult concepts taught in a boring and hard to follow manner. Ray is a good guy. I thought there were a perfect amount of homework quizzes and exams. They were open-note which was a lifesaver.
He was a nice guy but in a class as important as biostats, I really wish he wasn't the professor. The class was so confusing and the way he taught was so disorganized. It was really hard to understand anything or even pay attention because it was so boring.
He is such a caring dude. You can really tell that he loves being with students and cares about them. That being said though this class is pretty tough especially if you don't have a lot of experience before hand with statistics and statistical software. He does offer a lot of extra credit with open-book tests which are a life saver.
Amazing professor! Super nice and very understanding! Learned a lot in this class! Would take again.
Very approachable and willing to help outside of class. However, biostats is a difficult class-- much harder than the other PH classes. He does offer a significant amount of extra credit for attendance/student ratings at the end of the semester, and the tests are open note/open book which helps. Just show up and put in the work and you'll be fine.
Prof Merrill is seriously so kind and cares about his students. However, he is thee most boring teacher ever. His lectures are confusing and I never really knew what was going on. Quizzes are open note which helps and there weren't that many assignments/busy work. He offered a good amount of extra credit which helped a ton. A doable class with him
I didn't learn much in this class, I mostly taught myself the work from the textbook. There were like 8 homework assignments, 8 quizzes a midterm and a final. All online. The homework was annoying because the TA graded harshly. This class is definitely time consuming but its required. Not a great professor but you'll be fine with the textbook
Literally awful.
What a doozy. One of the most disorganized and confusing classes I've taken as far as what we need to know for tests. Dr. Merrill is extremely kind, understanding, and willing to help, but this class was such a headache due to the sheer chaos in the way he runs it. If you have the option to take the class from someone else, do it.
Extremely boring class, but he gives a lot of extra credit so an A is achievable. Only like 6 quizzes during the semester, a project, and a final exam. That is your whole grade. All on Learning Suite open note. He only took attendance 3 times during the semester randomly and it was all extra credit points.
If you had Merrill for 313, his Biostats class is very similar to that. Not great at teaching at all. But super nice guy. Only assignments are quizzes and homework. Thankfully stuff was open note which made it doable. Just one of those classes you have to get through.
