Professor Otto was extremely helpful and easy to understand. The exams were fairly simple also. The information in the class isn't simple, but he makes it a lot easier to understand.
Professor Otto was one of the most concise, poignant, and helpful instructors I've had yet at Wright State. If you need a math professor with a lot of patience: I would suggest him highly.
Ray is a sweet heart. He really cares about his students and if you take Business calc, make sure that you take him!
Let's put it this way, I took MTH 126/127 four times before. When I had Ray Otto, he helped me understand where I was making mistakes, and I FINALLY, was able to pass MTH 126/127 with a "C". Thank you Ray Otto, I can finally get ready to graduat
Ray Otto was the best math prof I've ever had; esp. since this was prob. the roughest class I've had to go thru at WSU...take him for business calc if you get the chance, his patience is enviable!! A total sweetheart!
Very good teacher. Highly recommend.
Ray Otto, although is a good "teacher", I would not recomend him. His tests are completely unfair and very difficult. He tests over the most difficult examples and minor details. He does not curve and wouldn't round up my 79.4%. Jerk!
Ray is a great man and is willing to help anyone THAT ASKS!! He knows what he is talking about and is very organized! I would recommend him to anyone!!!!!
Mr. Otto is a good teacher, but if you think he is organized then you haven't been to his office. He often shows off his math skills in class whichs tells how moody he can be. That's why the tests can be difficult and he won't curve if doesn't want to!
Very clear teacher and always willing to help students at any time. The class is hard but he makes it as understanding as possible. I'd recommend him!
Ray Otto was a very helpful professor. He was very clear and offered any help possible with his office hours. The class time flew because it was only 3 days a week. Therefore he had to keep it moving. Answered the questions he could with the time
He is a VERY good Math teacher he is someone you can go to and ask questions he really cares and want you to learn. I would try to take his classes when ever poss
Probably the best MTH 228 professor to take
He is a great professor, and I would definately reccommend him. He breaks everything down and makes it super easy to understand. Tests are really easy if you look over the notes. Although you'll take a lot of notes, they're very helpful.
I had Mr. Otto for MTH this past quarter and I'm happy to have him again this quarter. He really cares about how you perform in his class, and he explains things so that everyone can understand. Mr. Otto will do his best to make sure you get an A as long as to apply yourself.
Very helpful. Always available for questions. Responds promptly to emails. Gave bonus on every test. Very well prepared for common final.
Ray Otto is my favorite teacher on campus!!! He is very smart and willig to help with anything.. He was so nice to me that I went to him for help with 129 and 228 even though he was not teachinh these classes he was a great help.If you can get in his class by all means do he makes math even better!
i failed the course but that was all on me. when i did show up to class he did an excellent job of not just explaining the material, but understanding why people would be confused on certain areas so he would then explain it further. his tests didnt seem too difficult to me, not too hard or easy. if you show up for the classes at least.
Very good at taking things slow. Ofte nextends offic hours.
he is the hardest grader i have ever had. Takes points off even when you get the answer correctly.
Hardest class ever.
Explains things well and answers any and all questions.
go to class and do your homework for an easy A. very nice professor.
Good professor, explains ideas and concepts well. Asks questions and respects the response. Very helpful during office hours and a cool guy.
Mr. Otto is a very good teacher. He team-taught this course with Dr. Mathews, and they both did an excellent job. He was very good at helping you if you had questions and explaining things that were unclear. I would definitely recommend him.
I almost failed this class the previous quarter with another teacher, and now I am getting an A. He is awesome. I would highly recommend him because he does a great job of explaining things without getting too technical or boring. Office hours are really helpful too. Just go to class and you will get a good grade.
This is a fairly complex course that requires intense studying. Take advantage of his office hours. He really wants his students to get the best grade possible, but will not loosen his grading policy. Go to class, do the homework, CRANK OUT THE Az BABY. I definitely worked for my A.
Doesn't go over homework which makes the class hard to understand. He gives examples for the notes but the examples are very easy, unlike the homework and test problems. He expects you to visit him during office hours, but when they are only 45-50 minutes long with 7 people in his little office, it is hard to get help w/ more than two problems.
Very good teacher. Enjoyed taking his class. Nice guy and knows what he's talking about.
Awesome teacher, nice clear examples and is extremely helpful. Tests aren't too hard. Highly Recommended!
Horrible, took off 12% on one exam because I didn't label an angle (the graph I made was for my own reference, it wasn't even a requirement for the problem). Failed the class, AVOID.
Honestly the WORST math instructor i have had a at WSU. I did every homework went to office hours almost everyday which were so crowded they were pointless had a private tutor and he failed me never missed a class re-took it in the summer with a different prof and got a B and almost an A. Avoid at all cost unless your a amazing at calculus.
I am terrible at math. But, he explains things so much that it makes it very easy to understand. I was expecting to barely pass and right now I have an A. I definitely suggest him to anyone. Go to every class though...
Ray was an awesome teacher...Calc isn't an easy class...so no teacher is going to give you an automatic A...but Ray was ALWAYS there to help...In my opinion Ray Otto is one of the best math teachers at WSU...
Hes a hard teacher, but gives you all of the material to do well. He WANTS you to do well. He's always available for office hours, and always excited to help. His love for teaching is easily seen. I don't even have him for Calc 1, but he takes time to help me because I can't understand my teacher. I can't say enough good things.
Great teacher, hard grader. I'm a math major and had problems passing his tests. marks off points for little things. good at teaching the material, just don't forget minor details!
Ray Otto is the best math professor. He is extremely respectful of his students and uses class time well. Awards partial credit to correct work accompanied by wrong answers. Always offers further explanations in class or during office hours. Acknowledges that HW is too hard; asks reasonable exam questions. Weekly e-mails. Absence not penalized.
If you aren't good at math in general, do not take it with Otto. He goes very very fast. There is almost no time to answer questions in class and he expects you to ask questions during his office hours. Each homework assignment is worth 5 points and it is a lot of work. You will almost never get full points. He is very picky on everything.
Wonderful teacher. Very clear at explaining this accelerated math class. Quiz every day, with 3 tests, he's always available for consultation. Take him, he's one of the rare good teachers at WSU.
OMG THIS CLASS SUCKS!!!!!!! Otto does his best to be helpful however he kinda isnt, you lose points for dumb stuff and you can complete 5 hours of homework and not get full credit for little mistakes...THE IS NO EXTRA CREDIT in this class and the material is all word problems :( if you dont like coming to class this class is not for you CALC SUCKS
Great teacher! has a lof of patience and will work will you. Go to office hours, they will help you. The class is demanding; take it during the summer or with a light class load. If you haven't taken a math class in a while, better take college algebra or pre-calulus again before enrolling in this class.
Ray is a hard teacher to follow, he moves very quickly and does not spend time answering questions from previous lectures. I went to his office hours and got help on my homework, turned in my homework and got it back and got an F. failed the class, retook it with a different professor and got an A
He is the best math teacher I've ever had. granted i failed a few quizzes but after i went in for help i understood perfectly. whatever grade yu get is based on your willing ness to ask for help if your struggling. GREAT TEACHER
This is not an easy class....but Otto wants everyone to succeed. He had tons of office hours, and he gives you extra credit for turning in your homework before the tests. He also dropped the lowest 3 quiz scores from your final grade. If you can, take him!
Most friendly, clear, and helpful teacher ever. I cant say much about class experience because this class has only 5 people in it. But in a small group he is amazing at making you understand math
He is the best teacher I have had so far at WSU. Extremely willing and eager to help students succeed, and does everything he can to better your understanding of the subject. Go to office hours, do your homework, and remember correct notation on the tests and you'll be fine. He is the nicest, most helpful man ever! Would take this class 100x over!
Incredibly nice and helpful. This is not an easy class by nature, but Ray has a ton of office hours and spends the entire class making sure you know what you're doing. He absolutely wants you to succeed. Attend every class, examples during lecture are very similar to those on tests and homework. Put in the effort and an A is definitely possible
If you're afraid of taking MTH228, but know you have to, take it with this professor! The course itself does not allow time for algebra refresher, it moves along so quickly, but I had no problems with any of the new material taught. Yes, lots of work, but it will be with any professor for this course. Take the class with this teacher - he cares!
He is awesome. I came into this class with absolutely no calculus skills at all and I completely understand what is going on. Definitely take him if you have the opportunity. I guarantee he is the best MTH 228 professor at WSU.
I enjoyed the class. Ray is very helpful!! On the downside, I put in at least 10 hours a week on homework. There was not a lot of problems, it just takes a while.
He is a great professor! I have understood everything that he says and I always do well on the homework! He does demand a lot, so make sure that you don't make any small errors. But he does give partial credit! He is also a very nice guy! I enjoy this class a lot!
Wow, what a great professor. Probably my favorite math teacher of all time! He's really picky and wants every thing done exactly how he does it in class, so make sure you take good notes!! I spent about 5hrs a week in his office durring office hours, but I learned so much it was worth it. He's such a great guy and always willing to help
Best math teacher I've ever had!!! I've never taken calculus and I'm expecting to get a B in the class (final scores aren't in yet). He explains things very well, he wants things done in a particular way but it's only to help you on the final and it does!!! He's always willing to help, has many office hours. Take him if you can!!!! Great teacher!
Ray was an awesome teacher. He has a lot of office time so that students can ask for help. He expects a lot from his students but if you do the homework you should be fine. If you are looking for an easy math class, don't take Ray as a teacher, he is very demanding but it helps in the end.
Overall nice guy and was helpful at times. Always went over the easy problems you would have for hw and when you went to do your hw there would be harder problems you have no idea how to do. Expect homework every night. Tests and quizzes aren't awful.
Great professor! If you have ANY math classes you need to take, try and get him. I'm horrible at math, but he explained things so well that I actually got good grades. Some test problems can be kinds tricky though, so make sure you know the subject. He's really nice, and his office hours are great to go to if you have any questions.
Extremely helpful teacher, will meet before during and after class if you have problems. Has extra credit. Does a good job explaining material. The only reason easiness isn't a 5 is because the subject is difficult. Truly a great teacher who cares about students especially if you show willingness to learn, or need for help.
Very helpful teacher. Does his very best to help everybody that he can. He offers extra credit for every test. The material is hard but he does an amazing job teaching it. He never gets frustrated and he is the nicest man you will ever meet. Take this class with him!!!!
This class was computer based along with Lisa Wellingholf. Ray was really nice and very helpful . No books are needed but $50 for the website that is used. The work can be done outside of class on any computer. Attendance is good for notebook checks and the mini lectures on what to do in class that day.
I loved Professor Otto, I'm already good at math, but he explains it very clearly and made calculus (a class I was extremely nervous about) simple. And he was always there to help. Highly recommend.
Ray Otto is an AWESOME teacher. He is always helping students. Although, he does not spend any time during class to answer questions from previous lessons, he is almost always available. His tests are somewhat easy as long as you attend class. Attendance is not mandatory, but you will not get your group work and quiz points if you do not go.
The class setup is different than any class I've taken. No book is required, but instead you print out the different sections prior to class that you will be learning. Attendance isn't mandatory, but you need to attend to get credit for the daily quizzes and in-class work. Ray is always available in his office to answer questions.
This class is not for the lazy and isn't easy. There is A LOT of homework and quizzes. He has a ton of office hours and is always there to help. He does a lot of examples from the book, although sometimes the easier ones so when you get to the homework you don't know how to do some problems. Offers extra credit. Overall, a very good teacher.
Business Calc is a very challenging course. Go to class every day, don't get behind on the homework and go to his office for extra credit. He responds quickly to emails and is willing to work with all of his students outside of class. He's a great guy and is very caring. I would be prepare to work but that will be with any instructor. Take him!
Ray is such a great teacher. This wasn't a lecture class, we were given work and then a quiz. He always made sure you understand the lesson and made himself extremely available to help outside of class. I felt I really developed a deep understanding of algebra. He is very sweet and knowledgeable. Take this class with him.
Ray is probably the most useless teacher I know. He does not even teach the course, we print off (optional) notes the day before then do classwork, followed with a quiz everyday. If you have a question, he may come by and tell you that you are not going to get the problem right, um like I know that, that's why I asked you a question?
Ray is probably the worst professor I have ever had in my life. If you solve a problem in a more efficient way then his methods you lose all points. If you don't show any work, or even if you show all the work he still takes off points. He took off points from my grade because the work I did for myself, he did not like.
If you're taking a math class, see if he teaches it. He is a great professor and deserves more recognition. I've never seen a teacher so dedicated to grading and helping students during office hours. He is picky with grading and he does assign a lot of work, but it really helps you on the tests and never feels overwhelming.
Ray's an interesting teacher, and not in a good way. He doesn't answer your questions in a clear way (he confuses you more) and he's a very picky grader so you better learn how he likes to do math, because if you do it in another way (a more efficient way) he WILL take off points.
Mr. Otto is an overall great teacher who grades very specifically. He is very helpful and has office hours every day (something I've never seen before) which shows his dedication. Take advantage of these office hours and pay attention to how he grades.
Ray is one of the nicest professors out there. Everyday in class you have a worksheet to do, followed by a quiz at the end of the class. There are also four exams, with one comprehensive final at the end of the year. Ray has open office hours almost everyday in which you can go and him ask questions.
Ray is one of the most helpful & nicest professors at WSU. Go to every class or you won't pass. If you don't understand something, go to his office hours. He will make everything crystal clear for you. Group worksheet everyday and a quiz afterwards. Also, four tests and a comprehensive final at the end of the semester.
Ray is an awful teacher. He just gives you work sheets and expects you to teach your self the material. Tests are super hard i would never take him again.
I have never seen a professor care so much about the success of his students. He teaches pretty well, but you must absolutely be sure of one thing with him. You must be meticulous with all of your answers on the tests. Write down every step, and use the correct notation the whole way! You can lose letter grades for this.
Mr. Otto is EXTREMELY helpful and patient in office hours and class. Class moves quickly with a lot of homework, but some of the assignments are dropped at the end. Be prepared to study. The tests are similar to quizzes/homework. He's big on using proper notation, but this helps a lot for future classes and final exams.
Ray puts a lot of effort and energy into what he is teaching and is always willing to help if you come to his office hours. He is a very hard grader to the point that he will take points off if you don't show your work the way he wants you to. Besides that he is a pretty good teacher. If anything he over explains the material.
Great teacher. I like math so it was easy but if you suck at math he is very helpful. The problems he solves in class are very similar to HW. Provides extra credit which is similar to exam questions.
4 test. homework or quiz every day, but he wont tell you until the day of unless its homework or a quiz. if you pay attention youll get atleast a B. he drops a good amount of grades which can be helpful if you struggle on a chapter. he is always there to help
Ray is probably the best math teacher I've had. He puts in a lot of effort and explains things in simplest terms. I have never taken Calc before this but he makes it very easy. There is a lot of homework and quizzes but he takes your top ten scores at the end of the semester.
Ray is an overall caring professor. In my class you taught yourself the material, did group work the next day & then took a quiz. The material was not very hard and he was helpful at office hours if you needed the help. If you show up and do you part, the class is an easy A.
Ray is a nice guy. But the class is structured unconventional, It isn't in the lecture format. The class is more like a study hall/ online class then it is an actual class,Which creates a lot of redundancy. People in the same room asking the same exact questions +10x, this happens on a daily basis.
Isn't helpful refers to the introduction than actually help you do it. I don't know if you have a choice if you take it, if you do don't !
Always willing to talk with you about anything he is teaching. Always asks if anyone has any questions about anything during his lectures. Always let's students know about his office hours and encourages you to come to them. Treats everyone the same, probably the most fair professor I've encountered.
his style of teaching is hes going to show you and move but he really expects you to know before hand and hes not clear on showing how things are done. i would not take him again. you cant not miss any classes.
There are lots of tests and quizzes. A physical book is not needed for this class and I did not use the online book.
He gives you the notes to print. That was totally helpful. He was always available to help, I went in a bunch. He makes tests out of 104 for extra credit He actually learned your name and face which was the first time a professor has done that. If you have a basic knowledge of algebra and pay attention in his class then you will pass with an A.
Was an excellent professor! Very understanding and kind! Would 100% recommend!
I'm not usually good with any kind of math, but I got an A in Ray's class. Some lessons are pretty difficult, but he always makes sure everyone in his class understands and gets help if needed. On the first day of class he gave a daily calendar covering the whole semester that he followed. Genuinely a great guy and great instructor.
Of all the math teachers I've had, he is by far the best. He takes otherwise complicated concepts and breaks them down into patterns and easy-to-digest sections. !!DO NOT BUY THE TEXTBOOK FROM B&N STORE!! Haven't used it once. Quizzes and tests are just like the homework problems he creates. 10/10 wish he would be my future calc prof!
Ray is THE BEST professor I have ever had. I honestly believe if i didn't have him I would have failed this class. Im horrible at math but I went to all of his office hours and he even extended them for me. He doesn't make you feel stupid if you don't know something and he breaks things down in way you can understand. Lectures are really good too.
Ray was an awesome teacher. He went through the material at the classes pace, he took time to answer everyone's questions during class and was available every day of the week for office hour tutoring. He even held an extra SI session outside of office hours to help out students who were struggling.
Ray is one of the best professors I've ever had, he really makes himself available to help you should you need any. When he goes over the work in class, he is very through and he will help walk you through it. If you do struggle in this class, definitely reach out to him and maybe utilize the tutoring services and you will succeed.
Ray is a professor that you can tell really cares about you. He always encourages you to come to office hours if you need help. Class isnt mandatory (except that there is a quiz every Friday) but if you struggle to understand the material youll get lost if you skip a class. He posts all his notes on Pilot so you can always teach yourself.
He was a great professor, always willing to help outside of class and spend extra time if you needed it. He is very understanding and I learned alot from his class!
He was very good at explaining the more complicated parts and made guided notes that we could print out and follow along if we wanted. He was also very good outside of class, he held multiple review sessions and extended office hours before the final exam.
NOTES DO NOT FOLLOW THE HOMEWORK
Just terrible in every way sure other say hes got but these test and what not never seen anything like them before
Ray Otto was a phenomenal professor at WSU. I have never really found math interesting at all, but his lectures were very well organized and easy to follow. Make sure to go to class prepared with the printed notes. There were quizzes every Friday which was not that difficult. Exams were typical. If you put in the work, then it is possible for an A.
Professor Otto is easily the best math instructor i have ever had. I personally hate math but with his teaching it made it much easier. Our class average was low due to the fact that many students didn't put in the time to study or meet up with him for office hours. He is very helpful and will meet with you whenever and sometimes gives extra credit
Good teacher, he explained things well and had office hours a lot and made himself available outside of class. No textbook but he did have these packets to print in order to follow along. No graded homework. The homework that he did give was for practice but he didnt give the correct answers so no way to tell if it was right.
Avoid at all costs. Have never seen any professor procrastinate as much as he does. Is late on getting content out. Gives wrong answers on answer keys. Gives practice problems and then changes practice problems on answer key so you cannot check your work. Complains about his own procrastination. Very unprofessional. Love algebra but hate this teach
I took this class while it was online and he provides a lecture video, a copy of the notes with practice problems, and an answer key video to the practice problems. None of them are necessarily required but I definitely recommend for practice. Gives a very clear schedule on when tests and quizzes are. He is also available after every class.
His class wouldn't be that bad if he actually provide study guy for the exams and quiz. if you expect to pass the class from just show up and do your work you won't pass. You have to do good on the exams also and the exams are usually hard. he doesn't give out study guide or anything either.
You were responsible to knowing the material before class which I hated, quizzes were over way too much material (usually around 8-10 lessons sometimes more) only had 25 minutes to do quizzes. Gave 2 oral tests just 1 on 1 with you and him worth 100 points. Save yourself the anxiety and stress and take with a different professor.
Dont take with him. Terribly organized class
Keep in mind I took this course online. He uploaded the lectures we would watch them to learn the lesson then we show up to class and he doesn't teach we just do practice problems together and the problems are graded. His oral tests he will just speak over you and take off points for it. Super difficult.
Professor Otto is a good professor, would I recommend taking him online-eh probably not. We had 6 quizzes with 8-12 lessons on them and 2 oral test. He makes this class insanely hard and is extremely anxiety provoking .If you take math with Otto please go to his office hours, he's super helpful and its the only way I was able to pass.
It was really hard to follow his teaching and it resulted in this being the only college class I have ever failed. Being remote due to covid probably had something to do with it because professors and students both were trying to adjust but nonetheless I failed miserably.
Just not a good professor. I’m sure he is very capable of being a good teacher just lacks proper organization and almost seems like he’s setting you up to fail. Gives ten question participation quizzes every day that are graded for accuracy, expects you to put in insane amounts of work outside the classroom. Don’t even bother
