He is one of the best teachers I have ever had. He is very clear and helpful, and he tells you exactly what to study on the test.
Very clear and helful. A great instructer for a difficul class.
very boring
I had him for Biol 190 & Microbiology, and he's great! Very organized & clear lectures! His notes helped me focus on the right things to study for his exams! He's great for lab, too.
Awesome teacher, if you really want to learn. If not, loser, take another class.
Absolutely fabulous professor. Dr. Thweatt is approachable, explains material well and seems to enjoy teaching and being around students in general. I cannot recommend a teacher more highly.
He is really really good. His test are really easy if you study his notes. I would recommend this teacher for biol. He is really cool and helpful. Take him.
BEST LECTURE EVER! very informative, and gives real-life examples. always reviews before test, take this professor if you can!!
This was one of my fave classes @CCSN. He is a great Micro lab prof. He plays music when you are doing your experiments-too cute. Go to class and you can't go wrong. He's not tricky on his lab quizzes. Just review what he tells you and you can't get a bad grade--well unless you don't care.
best teacher , take him very intelligent and helpful.....just remember to take very well notes.
I wish I had him for all my labs! Very easy to understand, really nice man.
Great teacher, you can tell he know's his stuff. Record his lectures and review because it's a lot of info.
He is a great teacher. Tack good notes and his test will be easy for you. good guy.
Very good professor, organized in the way he presents the material! His test are Ok, you do need to study the lecture notes and book. I do suggest you record his lecture!
He is an awesome teacher. i would suggest him to anyone. he is easy to understand and his tests are not hard, as long as you know the material you are fine. He is a really cool teacher and will help you in every way he can, he is really cool. TAKE HIM if you want to pass, because bio 189 isnt easy.
he is great. very helpful and self explanitory.
All I have to SAy is I LOVE RAY!!! this guy is the BEST BIO teacher out there. His material is explained VERY well! and HE tells you EXACTLY what is on his test... even down to the Discussion Questions. He is sooo helpful. If you need an HELP he REALLY takes the time out to explain it 50 times for you. HE IS THE BEST!
wow! finally a professor that i can actually understand about biology and the material that goes with it. he knows his stuff, very helpful, explains everything, is very patience to his students. I passed this class because of him; take him if you get the chance too.
HE REALLY IS THE BEST TEACHER POSSIBLE OUT THERE.. I REALLY WISH HE COULD TEACH ALL MY SCIENCE CLASSES!!
Best Bio 189 teacher ever~! unlike all others at csn!!
The BEST Biology professor!.. about 98% of his tests comes from lecture! take good notes and you'll do fine! I LOVE RAY!
He is overall a nice guy, but I didn't really like the way he presented his notes. He's old fashioned in that he doesn't use PowerPoint or WebCT, but to each his own. The tests were a challenge for me, but you really do have to study this material for several hours per lecture to understand it anyway. I would take him again, though.
He is a very nice person. I think he was also very easy. Pay attention to what he said in class and that is exactly what is on the test. He will make it easy on you. He really doesn't like it when you talk in class, so be careful.l
Dr. Thweatt is one of a kind! His lectures are very clear! And hes available during his office hours! 196 is not easy however if you put in the time to study you'll do fine
I had Dr. Thweatt for micro lab. He is very smart, nice and helpful! If you can take him for BIOL 251 lab, you are blessed!
Excellent teacher. Professor Thweatt was very helpful and open to questions. Great lectures, great in lab as well. He is personable and one of the better professors that I've had (I've already got a B.S., so I've had a lot of profs!). Highly recommended.
Despite making Biology seem boring through his lectures, he does give you the bare bones of what you need to learn which is ALOT! I've had teachers who gave fascinating lectures but I'd take Thweatt any day for a class that is so packed full of information. He is a clear organized lecturer so that taking good notes is fairly easy. He is very cle
Great teacher. Keeps the class engaged in lectures.. teaches the material very well. All material on tests is from class notes and he goes through what will be on exams one week before the test. One of the best bio teachers I have ever had.
BEST SCIENCE TEACHER THAT I HAVE EVER EVER EVER EVER HAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lectures are a little dry, but good instructor overall. No powerpoints. Just plenty of overheads, so stock up on lead!
He is a great teacher and gives you lots of information. Best part, there are never any surprises on his tests. He tells you what you need to learn!
He is an awesome teacher. Is easy to understand and lets you know exactly what you need to know for the tests. Also does a review before every test. He is also really nice.
probably the best professor ive ever had. very thorough. tells you everything you need to know and is good at helping you remember. always available to his students. by far the best prof i have ever had
One of the best teachers the biology Dept has.He really cares about his students, he really wants them to learn. And he those whatever he can to make sure his students have the best biology learning experience. Wish he taught Biol 197. Take him!!!!!!
Great teacher. Very passionate about subject. Does his best to make sure that you learn the material.
The best professor ever. I came into this class hating biology and wasn't able to pass Bio 95.. but he made class so much fun and so easy. he is the best everr. I cant wait to have 196 with him:))))
I have to say that he's a good teacher. He definitely knows his subject. Very detailed and very easy to understand. You will absolutely learn a lot about biology after you're done with the course.
Really nice guy and crystal clear on what you need to learn. Attending lectures is a must as his tests are completely based on slides. Textbook probably isn't necessary, and "The World of the Cell" is not a great book anyway. Absolutely take him if you have the chance.
He is by far the best biology professor ever. He is so caring and has a true talent for teaching. I had him for 189 and 196 , and I am very sad he won't be teaching any of my future biology courses. Take him seriously, you won't regret it:)
One of the best Professors! You need to read ahead to be able to get the most out of this class but "you will learn" and you will enjoy it a ton. A high quality Professor with good humor and sincerity in helping you make the grade while you learn. He reviews before every Exam. Take notes, read, and do the studying, you'll get an A-B for sure.
He is an awesome teacher. He reviews before each test and tells you exactly what will be on the test. I had him for bio 189 and bio 196. Trying to get into his bio 251 class is hard. Great teacher!!!! He literally tells you what will be on the test.
You'll be very busy copying what he shows on the projector. I was actually too busy to listen to his lecture. He tells you what to study for exams. Fairly easy class.
Prior to registering I read the feedback from other students and thought-- GREAT! Sadly my experience in the course has been different than the majority. Yes I am getting an "A" BUT I will leave this class with NOTHING. Unless of course your idea of MEMORIZING everything is actually learning- I would NOT recommend this instructor. :(
The last reviewer is correct, this class is easy because you don't really learn anything. It's all about memorizing what he wants. He doesn't use any technology aside from old overhead slides. Those of you looking for an easy A who don't want to learn, I hope you NEVER become a doctor or any other sort of health professional!
yes, this class is all about memorizing what he says. he often repeats his stuff in lecture, indicating that it will be on the tests. there's no videos in his lecture, just overhead & writing on the board, real old school. u must write ur own notes, he only hands out take home quizzes. exams are all scantron multiple choice but pretty tricky!
When it comes to his class it's fairly easy. All but 1 quiz were take home, he sticks to what you're learning in lab that week, and he's a nice guy.His exams are a little tricky but do-able. As for not learning anything, I think that's false. It is what you make of it and I actually learned a lot.Try taking another class and see how upset you'll be
I disagree with some of the previous comments. It is true that you have to copy and memorize a lot of things. However, I learned A LOT in this class and founded extremely interesting. Here is an idea, go to class, copy the notes and also record the class. Then go home and fill in your notes by listening to the audio, do this and you will do great.
AWESOME teacher!I like knowing EXACTLY what to study for.He makes it easier for students,so it's not overwhelming.I wish I could take him to the university!I learned a lot.I have been to several orientations for medical school and the first thing they say is "MEMORIZE your way through sciences. You will not use what you learned!" I love him!!!!!!
It is true, he is a very good professor. I only used the book when I wanted to fill in my understanding of some topics. Go to his lectures and you will do well in this class. I enjoyed being in his class. I was never bored because I was too busy writing notes. The best part are the reviews before the tests. Don't miss them.
Dr. Thweatt is a great professor! Biology 189 is not easy material but Dr. Thweatt makes it interesting. You definitely need to attend class because he gives quizzes and you don't always know when they will be. Also, a lot of material is covered in lecture and it is impossible to catch up once you miss a class. He gives great reviews before tests!
THE BEST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD..After taking him u will compare all other science profs 2 him.He is so clear, great personality. I cant say enough good things about him. As you go 2 higher level u appreciate and constantly use what he engraves in ur brain. There is no fluff in his class just info u should know n need 2 know 4 future classes
Great professor. No drama in the class, it's all about learning. Nothing scary- take notes, re-write your notes and study. Love that he is old school and doesn't confuse you with new technology. You learn biology!! Tests are all multiple choice and all but the first two quizzes are take home.
One word to describe him: Amazing. He makes hard concepts so understandable. He's one of the best professors I've had in such a long time!
Great Professor! Enjoyed the class. He explains everything and makes it easy to understand. Attend all the classes and be prepared to take a lot of notes. I made an A in this class. I took his 251 class and got a B+.
This guy is AWESOME! He tells you EXACTLY what you need to know for quizzes/practicals and eliminates all the junk but you still learn TONS. I'm sure if he wrote the lab manual he would take out half the crap that's in it. This was definitely my favorite class! I wish I could take him for more classes!
I heard horror stories about 189, I was scared to take it... luckily I managed to get Dr. Thweatts class. All you need to know to do well is pay attention to his lectures, and write awesome notes! Record lectures, rewrite your notes, relisten to lectures & reviews, and you will do great. He is awesome, everything is based off of his lectures.
I had professor thweatt for both lab and lecture and he's fantastic for both! I never had to use the book personally. As long as you pay attention and take notes you'll past his tests and quizzes no problem. He does a review before every test and is very straight-forward. He DOES light detail though which is easy to get used to.
Professor Thweatt is AWESOME! He makes difficult concepts easy. All but first two quizzes are take home and he does fantastic reviews before exams. 3 exams and one final. Take notes, record his lectures, and you will pass. Barely use the book. He will help you after class and look over your notes to see if you are taking good ones. Got an A.
He is very nice and very helpful. If I could I would take all my biology labs with him. He's a wonderful teacher.
Awesome professor. Don't miss a class because he gives a lot of notes but he covers the material so well and helps you understand concepts. He never gives pop quizzes and tells you what you need to know before the quizzes and tests. As long as you show up to class and put in effort studying your notes, you will do great.
Great professor, very smart, and explains thing very well. You must attend every class and I recommend recording his lectures.
Overall he was very clear on what he expected out of you. I took notes and taped every lecture, I highly recommend that you take him for both lecture and lab. He is a great professor and makes challenging concepts easy to understand.
Dr. Thweatt is an amazing teacher! His microbiology class was super interesting and easy. He gives you all the notes you will need for the course, so don't buy the book. All his quizzes are either take home or open notes. Lecture notes cover everything in the exams, and he also has reviews for them (Don't miss reviews) Highly recommended! Take him!
Best Professor Ever!!! We had 3 exams and a few quizzes through out the semester. He gives you all the material that you will be tested on and also has a review. He does make the exams a little tricky, but if you study hard and know the material you will be fine. I recorded each lecture and reviews and that also helped tremedously.
Let me do this before my grade gets posted just to be fair. Many students fail this course, and I heard some students say his lecture is much better than other professors. Exams are multiple choices & he will tell you exactly what he is going to ask. It doesn't mean it's easy!! But that certainly means you WILL PASS as long as you make efforts.
I had Dr. Thweatt for 223 lab. He was a very nice professor who seemed to truly care about having his students learn the material. Sometimes when he lectured, he talked very fast and it was difficult to keep up. But his tests were open-ended and he goes over information on the test the lab before the test so you can know what to study for.
He wants his students to succeed. He is kind and very knowledgeable and helpful. I definitely recommend taking him. But don't miss any classes...sometimes he gives out take home quizzes you can't make up!!
Dr. Thweatt makes hard and complicated concepts of 189, simple and clear. He breaks it down in a form where you can understand and learn easily. The best part is the take home quizzes. I suggest to record his lectures and if possible, take him for lab too! Most importantly, he is very generous and helpful to his students. I wish he taught 223/224!
Dr. Thweatt makes this subject that is hard and complicated, easy and simple. He breaks down long topics which makes you understand the material more clearly. I suggest to record his lectures and take him for lab also. The best part is the take home quizzes! But most importantly, he is very generous person that is helpful to his students. TAKE HIM
Great teacher, tells you exactly what you need to know for the lab quizzes so you aren't memorizing things you wont ever need. BUT he is very very specific if you are even a word off, you will be marked off. GREAT LAB PROFESSOR!
I had professor Thweat for BIOL 189 Lec. He's very nice, but the class is very difficult. Although it's difficult, Thweat encourages students to come to his office hours for help. The one thing I didn't like about him is that he doesn't use power points. Notes are given verbally, written on the board, or put on the projector.
Great professor for both lecture and lab. He tells you exactly what you need to know for the exams and quizzes. The subject is not easy but he is very clear and you can always come to him for help. Highly recommend!
I'm glad I took Professor Thweatt for lecture. Yes, this class hard if science is not your best subject. Therefore, you'll need to spend lots of hours studying. He goes over on what to study for the quizzes and tests.I highly recommend him. Majority of the class recorded his lectures. I didn't have to. Passing with a B.
Didn't have to record lectures. 6 quizzes (3 take home i think). 4 exams. Goes over on what to study for quizzes and exams. Highly suggest to attend and listen for all lectures because notes will be on the quizzes and exams. Difficult class. Give yourself time to actually study for a good hr or 2 every night if possible. Def. recommend this guy.
BEST BIOL PROFESSOR I RECOMMEND TAKING HIM 189 IS NOT AN EASY COURSE BUT PROFESSOR RAY MAKES IT SO EASY AND EXPLAINS EVERYTHING 3 EXAMS+FINAL HE TELLS YOU WHAT IS GOING TO BE IN THE EXAM/QUIZZES HE IS OLD SCHOOLS DOESN'T USE POWERPOINT RECORD LECTURES& YOU WILL BE GOOD :) GOOD LUCK AND TAKE HIM NO DOUBT
As said before, everything is based on his lectures, no need for thehe book. Learn the lecture to a t, and it's an easy A. Otherwise... I still remember getting only 0.5 out of 1 point for writing "orange" instead of "orange-red."
He writes all over the place and he cant explain the concept. STUDY!! if you dont work hard for this class nothing will make sense to you.
He writes all over the place and he cant explain the concept. STUDY!! if you dont work hard for this class nothing will make sense to you.
currently enrolled in his 189 course. he is a horrible professor because he cant explain well. his tests are hard. makes everything hard to understand. i wonder where he gets his good ratings from.
Professor Thweatt is tough instructor. he will grade you hard and he wont hesitate to dock you off on tests. his tests are not really relavent to his exams. reading the entire book is a must. His favorite phrase is " read the text book if you dont understand." Not recommended.
Tends to jump around. He speaks extremely fast. It's hard to follow up with his lecture.
Currently taking him and he isn't as easy as you would like to think. Majority of the class received a C or lower on the exam. If he was that great. Every student would be jumping for the A. He needs to be more specific and not just talk through his lecture so vaguely. And he needs to understand not every student has the basic knowledge of biology
Extremely hard. Lectures dont make sense. All over the place. Doesnt use the book. Avoid at all costs.
This is by far the hardest class I have ever taken at CSN. If you want to pass this class, you have to study every day and study everything he teaches you. Tests are extremely difficult. If this is your first Biology class, DONT take this class.
I'm not sure what everyone is talking about in regards to Professor Thweat. He is a great professor. You have to take good notes, study the notes and mark your notes when he does review. He is particular about the work. Not an easy A, but absolutely attainable.
Thweatt is a very knowledgable professor, and explains things really well. He does not ask straight forward questions on his tests so THEY ARE NOT EASY! Also gives a few trick questions. You really have to study everyday to pass, but passing IS ATTAINABLE. Gives take home quizzes which really helps keep your grade up.
Mr. Thweatt is awesome. He goes straight to the point on what your need to know.I have him for both lab and lec. Believe me, you CAN NOT get another teacher easier then him. biol 189 is a thought class so if you don't have a simple background in biol, take biol 95 and then take Mr. Thweatt for 189.
He made microbio very interesting. I really enjoyed his class. Attendance is not mandatory however all his exams are from his lectures. I didn't use the book once. He doesn't use powerpoint so be prepared to take notes. He does reviews before each exam and goes over what will be tested. The best bio teacher I've had so far!
Biology is hard regardless of any teacher. Attendance is mandatory if you wanna get a good grade. You don't need the book. But take notes and record lectures! He's an awesome teacher. Just study!
Best 189 teacher at CSN. Teaches with great clarity and he is very approachable. The best.
I'm not going to lie I made a C because one test threw me off. He was great actually, he tells you what to highlight in notes for the test. Gives you a WHOLE WEEK to study. And HIGHLY ENCOURAGES you to go to his office hours to copy the test questions and answers for the final. He's bland when teaching but informative. I didnt buy the book. Record!
Easy professor, explains everything and easy to understand, YOU DO HAVE TO STUDY at least everyday and work hard. He does take home quizzes that are straight from notes and copy the exam questions for the final because they're going to be on there. Buy the book, take good notes, record the class and study, you should do fine! :D
Love him! His test are tricky, he loves making students think, but that's when you realize whether you KNOW or have just memorized the material. As long as you go to class, take notes (record his lectures) you should do fine! Super helpful w/ any question, never mad, always friendly. Highly recommend him! You learn but you don't feel over whelmed.I have heard of easier teachers, but they were on chp.5 by the time we were on12 slowed our labs down. So they learned nothing compare to us. GOOD LUCK
Professor Thweat is a great teacher. He gives 3 exams, 6 quizzes, and one final. These exams are based of his notes. He exams are very logical and tricky, but if you study his notes you should be fine.
Professor Thweatt is a GREAT professor!! He's clear on what he teaches, I was lucky enough to get his class. Yes you will have to study A TON but he makes sure he lets everyone know the material that will be on his exams. If you have the opportunity to take him DO! He's one of the best 189 professors hands down!
When you are taking any BIO class, you need to go in knowing that it's going to taxing no matter who the professor may be. That said, I enjoyed taking Thweatt's class. He always has exam reviews. Record them. You have to be in class. Every class. You can't expect to memorize definitions and get an A. You need to understand the material. Period.
This teacher made 189 so easy! If you wanna pass 189, take him! He knows his materials, lets you know everything you need for the exams and he does this "study day" before exams, as long as you're there, youll get an A on the exam. He does a couple of homeworks, CHERISH IT; they'll help you a ton!
Professor Thweatt is the best. Attendance isn't mandatory, but all his tests are based on lecture and he does reviews as well. No textbook, just notes. He gives take home quizzes as well. He's approachable and straightforward. There's no way you can fail this class. Take notes and record lectures and you'll get an A
He explains everything well. I didn't use the book because I got good grades just studying the notes. Attendance is a must because exams test from his notes and he doesn't put notes or powerpoints online! He does give takehome quizzes that you need to be in class for because he usually doesn't announce it beforehand and they're easy points
Great teacher. Is extremely clear on what is expected. Exams are based of in class lectures. Great reviews before each exam. Your hand will hurt from all the notes you take in class. He does not use power point but is well worth a little soreness.
OOps I meant to put Biol 251 Not 3905 lol -- Also I forgot to add! Do Not Miss Reviews !! He's reviews are amazing to study for the exams!
This was one of my favorite biology professors I've ever had. His class is very straightforward. You do have to put in the time to study but if you take good notes and pay attention there's no way you cannot pass.
Class was not that hard if you understand the concepts. He is very clear on what he wants you to study for the test. Laid back teacher, did not have to use the book at all, everything came from his notes. I also took him for lab, I am selling my lab manual and other materials on Craigslist. His classes does get full fairly quickly!
Dr. Thweatt is by the best professor at csn. He's very organize, tell you what to study for exams, but even if u understand the material well, the answears are indeed very tricky. I encouge you to record his lectures.
Thweatt is the best prof you could ever take for BIOL189! He's very clear on what he wants you to study. His tests are not that easy bc they're formatted to test if you really know the material or not, but just show up to class, take notes, and read the book, and you'll do fine!!!
Took for 189 Lab. Really easy. Gives you all the answers for coming test in lab a week before. Would definitely take again!
He is so tough. i don't feel like his lecture notes are helpful at all. It confuses me. very chemistry oriented. don't take if not a chem fan.
TAKE HIM! Took him for lab and lecture. Lecture has 7 quizzes, 3 exams, 1 cumulative final exam. Lab has 10 quizzes. Must study for this class, you cannot just "get by". Took this class with HIST 101102. Lab manual and attendance is mandatory. Record lectures, take good notes, take pictures, make friends and they all will be very helpful.
If you can, take him! Could not be more clear in his 'what to know' for exams in both lecture and lab. If you are having trouble with a topic or want more clarification, just ask. He has multiple ways to un-complicate something and make you understand. My only complaint is he doesn't teach anything other than 189 and 251. The best!
Don't waste your money on buying the textbook. There, I saved you up to eighty bucks, you're welcome. Do invest in a voice recorder (if your phone doesn't have one) and play the lecture recordings while you drive. On top of that, you will be writing or typing notes all class long - the more the better. He's an adorable man but don't try to hug him.
Prof. Thweatt was a great lab teacher. Very clear on what he expects. There's quizzes every week, but he usually goes through the previous week and lets you know what to study for the quizzes. Ask questions if you don't understand. Prof Thweatt was a great lab teacher. Would take him again if I could.
Amazing teacher, however save your money and don't buy the book, this was an extremely hard course for me, i recorded all of his lectures and wrote the best notes i could, all his exams and quizzes are based on his lectures, he explains things extremely well and his labs are easy & fun, he tells you the answers if you can't figure it out.
Professor Thweatt is a great professor. He is clear in what he wants out of his students, highlighting everything that is on the exam during lectures and review days. There are no surprises. Just show up and pay attention to the lecture.
Being that the fail rate for Biology 189 classes is at a high percentage maybe you should think about taking Thweatts class. Very straight forward and funny class. Book is not required because his in class notes cover all his tests. Very thorough information and up-to-date. His sense of humor makes the class laxed and laid back.
Thweatt is a great teacher. Before each lab we start, he makes you highlight everything to study that he will put in the quiz for the following week. I passed all the quizzes with A's and B's because of that. Explains each lab thoroughly, but doesn't take hours doing so, which I enjoyed. He's very to the point. I regret not taking him for lecture.
Professor Thweatt is awesome! He tells you exactly what you need to focus on for any quizzes/tests. He answers questions clearly and keeps explaining until you understand the concept. He made labs fun! I highly recommend him!
Not clear
HE'S THE BEST. He lets you know exactly what to study for next lab's quiz. He is so helpful and explains the labs well. I definitely recommend Professor Thweatt!!
I'm currently taking BIOL 189 with professor Thweatt and I have to say, it isn't as tough as I thought it would be. Thweatt is old fashioned with his lectures; he literally lectures with the help of visual guidance and the students jot down their notes. Tips to pass: attend class, study your notes, and use the book for confusing concepts/topics.
Great teacher
Best Bio 251 teacher, clear with the information. Test are a little hard but as long as you attend the review day you'll pass.
Took this teacher for 189/251 and labs for both and he truly is amazing, no need for books, everything comes from his lectures, i highly recommend recording everything. Tests can be tricky because he really makes sure you actually understand the material. Labs do not run all 3 hours, you can leave when you are done which is amazing. RECOMMEND
Amazing teacher, genuinely nice and there for you! If you don't understand something, he makes it clear! I am sad I cant take him for other biology classes. If you have the opportunity to take him, DO IT!
LITERALLLY THE BEST. he is very kind, helpful, and he does final exam reviews. he is a very good professor. HIGHLY RECOMMEND
Great prof. He knows his stuff, but unlike other profs he can articulate the material well. His notes are everything when it comes to the exams. You need the notes! Good notes will make the class much easier. Having some chemistry background will also help a lot. I learned a bunch, but I also studied quite a bit.
Nice professor. Doesn't post grades online, so if you want to know where you stand you have to go during his office hours. Doesn't do powerpoints, he hand writes all notes on board, sometimes they're hard to read. Pay attention & attend class or you WILL NOT pass. Doesn't use the textbook but I recommend you read the chapters to help clarify.
He is amazing. Always willing to help, encourages students to go to his office hours. His tests are tough but as long as you are there for the review you will be fine! His quizzes are take-home except for one but he prepares you for that. Don't need the textbook at all, helps to record his lectures. Very kind professor.
Took him for lab and lecture which really helps because he always gives tips for the lecture exams in the labs and generally let you leave lab early if you finished quickly.
Thweatt's lectures are always clear and to the point. He is helpful, approachable and very knowledgeable . He is always available before and after class and also during his office hours. He gives 3 exams plus a cumulative final. He also gives in class or take home quizzes (tells you exactly what to expect), plus he has review days! Wonderful prof!!
He doesn't use books. Just listen to everything he says, and you'll get A's to all of his quizzes. That's what I did and got. Not that easy for his exams, i guess the exams were combined and made all together will all the bio 189 professor. So study EVERYTHING for exams. He's a sweet old man. Direct to the point lecture. Def recommended!
3 exams, 1 final. Many quizzes but he tells you the questions that will be on it the lecture before, and the answers are right there in your notes! (if you were listening and writing of course). Has review classes before an exam. Record his lectures and study them. I truly believe that is how I passed, along with having great notes.
Prof. Thweatt can be dry. He is to the point and doesn't waste your time in class. ALL of his exams are practically from his lecture/slides. He gives you review days and tells you almost exactly what is going to be on his exam. He is willing to HELP you if you're lost/not understanding the material. GO TO CLASS, take good notes, and you will pass!!
Dr. Thweatt is a nice man, and easy to follow his instruction and his quiz is straight forward from his high light in his book.
Old fashioned style of teaching, which works for me but maybe not others. This class made me love micro. ALL of the test questions come directly from his lecture notes. If you don't go to class you won't pass, but his lectures are full of information and enjoyable. Notes are unique to any others, written himself. His passion for the subject shows.
Class was easy the only thing that stopped me from getting an A were my Exam grades all in the 80's + B in lab. Easy class just take notes and study hard for the exams and you'll be fine. If you need help just ask questions during lecture or after lecture, he is always ready to answer questions. He is a really nice professor.
Prof. Thweatt is a great professor. easy to understand. He will give you study guides every exam to make it easier for the students to study.
He is the best professor I have ever had! I could now imagine how easy can be learning biology. I enjoy his lectures. Such an amazing person and very knowledgeable professor. I would definitely recommend him to everyone!
Prof Thweat is such a great teacher! His lectures are very interesting and enjoyable to listen to. Attendance isn't mandatory but make sure you go or stay throughout the duration of class because sometimes he'll hand out take home quizzes towards the end of class or announce when the next quiz will be. I would definitely take him again!
He makes Biology tolerable! Notes are different per student. Just study, study, study your notes and record the lectures. Best Bio professor ever!
He is a great professor and very knowledgeable about the topic. He will simplify it for you in English. Just study and dont cram till the night before!
He is by far THE BEST professor that I have ever had. Tips to get an A: Take notes, pictures of the overhead, record lectures with your phone and listen to them before class. He doesn't have any trick questions and he tells you exactly what will be on the test. His review lectures are the same as lecture notes, just highlight them. No papers.
Professor Thweatt is the best Biol 189 professor ever!! This is the third time that i have taken Biol 189 and it is the hardest Biol class there is and out of all the professors, Ray is hands down THE BEST. He breaks down everything so easily to understand, exams are easy & gives out 10 point take home quizzes! I love his class!
very clear, simple, and use his own words. write down each word he says. Record each lecture and take pictures of what he presented. No power points. Exam review is a week before the exam and whatever he says, def will be on the exam! A bit tricky but if you study, the exams are easy peasy. Quizzes are take home, only 1 quiz in class (very easy)!
Professor Thweatt is a great teacher, he is very clear on what you need to know to pass the class, if you skip class and cant get the notes then youre going to miss info that may be on his exams. He gives 5 quizzes, 4 exams, and the final. He does prepare you with a review before each exam. I also took him for 251 lab and he was great.
I was nervous about taking Biology. I heard about the high fail rate and did not take BIO 95. Prof. Thweatt is the best Biology teacher! It's evident that he wants you to succeed. He breaks it down for you and makes Biology a little easier to understand. Show up to every lecture, take detailed notes and study.
3 exams 4quiz 1 final cumulative, no paper. record your lectures and fill in your notes. take pics of overhead. you must study and show up or you won't pass, it is a hard class but doable. does reviews but there are no power point provided. great professor. Exams ARE difficult!
Professor Thweatt is such a sweet old man, he cares so much about his students and will to anything to help you get the grade you want. His lectures are amazing, doesn't do anything online, you don't need the book and there are only 4 exams with a quizzes (some take home). He gives you very clear outlines for what will be. on each test and quiz.
Ray is such a good teacher! He tells you what you need to know and explains things in a way you understand him! Loved him as my professor!
He is a great proffessor but if you dont do your part I promise you will not pass! You must study every single day this is not like English class where you can just do essays and pass. You have to know how things function and why. The lecture is nothing like the exams its all worded differently not everything he says will be Worded the same.
He is seriously awesome! Not to mention super smart! He knows his stuff and you can tell he loves his profession. I enjoyed his class and I would definitely recommend him. Take him!
if youre a slow writer don't take him he speaks soo fast and literally everything he says is on the test
Great lectures, exams are NOT word for word from notes. You must understand the concepts. Formula to pass: Take notes in class, record every lecture, read the chapter, re-write notes neatly while listening to your recordings, HANDWRITE flash cards, study. Trust me, read the textbook. Many who didn't struggled. Also, he's hilarious and caring.
3 100pt exams, 3 take home quizzes 10-15pts, 1 in class quiz 25pts, 1 final 200pts. Lab is worth 200pts and counts with your final grade. You need 640 or above to get a B in the class. I missed classes due to being sick and I am falling under that 640 level by 10 points. It sucks. He is a good professor but he speaks quickly. Record his lectures.
I took him for bio 189 and he was awesome in lab and lecture. re taking him for bio 251
I cannot believe I survived BIOL 189 with an A. Professor Thweatt knows what he's doing. His lectures are easy to understand as long as you follow everything he teaches. Record your lectures, understand the topics don't just memorize. Take pictures of the overhead, rewrite your notes. Do his quiz assignments properly. Do all of this, automatic A
Straight forward and easy to understand
He is a great professor. His lectures are very old style but he makes the topics seem so simple and understandable. If it weren't for a bad lab instructor i would've a better grade. His class is based on his lectures, missing his class can make you fail because his exams are on his lectures. 3 exams and the final. You really have to study.
Bio189 is a hard class just right off the bat, but your best bet for understanding science is Thweatt. I have never had a science teacher/professor as good as him. He has a passion and a way of describing scientific subjects that just make sense. He uses metaphors for complex subjects so you can visualize and understand just about anything. 10/10
Professor is a great biology teacher. His lectures are very detailed so be prepared to take lots of notes. He is very knowledgeable in his field. Be prepared to study for his exams. All of them are multiple choice. 4 exams including the final and some take home quizzes. Don't be afraid to ask for help. Overall a funny and helpful professor.
Solid lecture choice. All of the quiz are take home so super easy to get good grades on quiz. Make sure you study for exams. He gives really good review days so nothing that is on the exam is a shock to see. He explains things throughly. Make sure to show up to class. Take notes and youll be good. He also ends class early usually.
Such a great professor. He is very thorough, and always does an exam review before exams and will tell you exactly what to study for. He will only quiz you on things he talks about in lecture, which is nice. Explains things in a way that makes sense to students. If you show up and take decent notes, you should have no problem getting an A.
He's a great professor. Tries to simplify every concept and is willing to explain it in class or in his office hours. I was very anxious for this class but I managed to pass with an A. He holds reviews a week before an exam and tells you what you will be tested on, make sure to study as some questions are worded to trick you. No pressure, take him
I took him for Lec as well and he's also a great professor for lab. He explains the stations in an easy manner and he tells you what to study for the quizzes that take place the following week you have lab. Usually you're out early, about 1 to 2 hours, not bad. If you have a problem for anything he's willing to help, ask questions. Good luck :)
Forgot to mention in my previous rating, something that will help with studying in this class would be to use Quizlet to make your own flash cards and study on the go and watch YouTube videos, such as the Amoeba Sisters. Simplified videos are your best friend to explain what is said in lecture or make it more memorable :)
My favorite professor. He is knowledgeable, and helpful. You must reach out to him to help you understand where you need improvement in order to pass. He loves to tease your brain with the questions he posses on the exam, so get Ready for the brain teaser question, they are fun!
Book is required but not needed as long you attend the lectures, not mandatory but definitely go.That is the only reason why I never opened my book again, I took notes and recorded all the lectures. 6 quiz, in home; 4 exams he will trick you with how the question is worded so read it well. He goes pretty fast in his lectures, also attend SI tutor
The exams that he gives are ridiculously hard. Be sure to study a ton, like 5 hours a day, maybe even more actually. He seems cool as a person but his exams are just insane.
I really liked his lecture it was very short notes and short class about an hour usually. Questions can be tricky in the exam but if you study and watch YouTube videos before exam you should be good.
His exams are very hard, even if you study really hard, they still are very hard.
THE BEST BIOLOGY LECTURE PROFESSOR JUST LISTEN AND TAKE NOTES UNDERSTAND THE MATERIAL-- HELPS DURING EXAMS
Awesome teacher! I didn't need the book at all- just attend class. He gives the exam schedule in the syllabus and has a review day before each one. Quizzes are take home. He really helps break down concepts so you can understand. Attend every class and record lectures! Beware of tricky questions on tests. Loved this class! Hope to have him again.
Dr. Thweatt is old school...as in he avoids using technology (including Canvas) if he can help it. You need to take notes from his in-person lectures or you'll struggle. If this doesn't bother you, hooray! He is a super geek about chemistry/microbiology in the best ways. He is also very clear about what you need to study for his exams.
Take him! He explains the concepts very thoroughly. He always dedicates a whole class to review for the exams. No textbook needed, just attend the lectures and make sure you take great notes. He's very old school and doesn't use canvas. He also drops your lowest quiz and exam grade. Great professor, and always answer questions/emails quickly.
Im so glad I got Dr. Thweatt for BIO189. I struggled a bit at first but once I started recording lectures and listening to them I started getting As. The exams are very challenging, you have to take your time and really understand the concepts. I love his passion for the subject and his ability to break down concepts. Would 100% take him again!
AMAZING Professor! Dr. Thweatt explains his lectures in great detail! He is clear and has great reviews for all exams! His exam questions can be a little tricky, so make sure you fully understand the material, not just memorize it. His grading is straight forward. Make sure you study! I was lucky to have him for lab and lecture! Take him! Best ever
Professor Thweatt is a great professor and is easy to understand. His lectures will give you all the information you need to pass. You are allowed to record and I highly encourage it. The red textbook is not needed if you are taking his lecture. The quizzes are straightforward and you are allowed to work on them at home.
I would say to study really hard because the exams are so difficult. I barely got a B. As for Professor Thweatt, he is a really cool guy!
Mr. Thweatt is very passionate about what he does and it shows in the ways he talks about the topics. However all of the information is from him talking during class and presenting on an elmo and there isn't really a canvas to look back on topics. His class is difficult if you don't pay attention and miss lectures but it is possible to pass!
For 251 lab his class was very well organized. He didn't try to trick you, he tells you what's going to be on the quizzes. Also he's not a harsh grader, gives you half point credit (which every point counts). Plus he lets us out early if we got done. Professor was laid back and old school. I could go on talking about him but take his class now!
Take him!! Record his lectures because it's what is going to be on the exams. His questions are a little tricky on the exams but if you study, you'll be okay. He'll tell you what you need to take notes on. Does a review before each exam. 4 exams & 6 quizzes.Drops lowest grade for each. Final was 66 questions & it wasn't bad at all. Great Professor!
I have him for 251 lab this semester and he is great! He wants the students in his lab to do great and he's very good at explaining everything and telling you what to study. If I could take him again for lab I would!
Prof. Thweatt is very passionate & explains really well. I suggest recording! Hell tell u what will be on the exam but beware exams are tricky,u have to actually understand it than just memorizing I suggest recording! Quizzes are easy/take home! This is my 2nd time taking 189 and he helped so much! office hrs are always available. thweatt 10/10
Thweatt's lectures are detailed and engaging, but his exams are notoriously challenging. To succeed, attend class, take thorough notes, and utilize tools like Unstuck AI along with the free textbook. With diligence, a solid grade is achievable.
Great teacher. Attendance isn't mandatory but all his notes are done in class, nothing is online so you should show up. You need to study for the tests and they are based off of his notes, but the tests are worded so differently that it makes it difficult. But he will always answer questions during the tests too. I would reccommend taking his class
Attendance isn't mandatory but all his notes are done on paper, not available online. He knows the topics very well and I liked the older style of teaching. Tests are challenging and sometimes worded odd; but once you figure out the wording it's easier to take. Definitely would take again.
I loved Professor Thweatt, his lectures were very heavy with material and you need to pay attention and take good notes. This was my third time taking microbiology and this was the first time a professor has made things make sense to me. He is very knowledgeable in the information he teaches. Tells you what will be on the quizzes and give homework.
Thweatt is probably bar none the best to take for Micro at CSN. He makes his own exams and presents the information to you in a way with no garbage filler and hours of reading textbooks, just straightforward slides with everything you need to know. Even if you miss these days, he has review for each exam that goes over everything again. Great prof.
Best professor; he cares for everyone to pass his class. Just like any BIO, it's hard, but he does offer help and never seems bothered to assist you. Quizzes are taken at home, and all of the finals are based on what you did in quizzes and lectures.
He is such an amazing professor. I love the way that he teaching us. If you want to pass biol 189 and get a good grade take home you will not regret. He is an easy professor and he will help you if you need a help the exam is kind of tricky but if you study you will be okay. Take hime don't wait.
best bio189 class!!!! lectures are ENGAGING and he presents it in a way that makes sense and can actually learn from. 4 exams and 4 quizzes (so easy and done at home), no homework assignments. you must attend lecture, nothing is posted on canvas. most straightforward class ive ever taken. extremely manageable. take him!!!!
