4 quizzes, 4 essays, NO finals. grade mainly based on essays which he helps alot
A great, inspiring teacher!
best english teacher i ever had!!!!! learned a lot
Great teacher, willing to work w/ you if you show up.
His class is very easy, especially his quizzes. Easy to get an A if students do all the readings and essays. Everything he teaches in his class is helpful for EWRT 1B.
The best teacher I ever had. He treats students with respect and he enjoys his job. He is smart and funny and he also knows what he's teaching.
I've never had a better English teacher in my life. Do the reading and homework, he'll do the rest to help you get an A.
WOW!!! What a cool dude!!! He KNOWS HIS STUFF. Amazing proofreading skills. Goes out of his way for each student. Chooses unusual reading material and skips the safe boring stuff. You LEARN in his class! And he is HOT!!!
No nonsense teacher who is passionate of what he is doing. His style of teaching is legit, and is something professors at DeAnza should follow.
This guy is incredibly smart and passionate indeed. He's had a very interesting life and comes with a very unique set of experiences that definitely is reflected in the way he teaches as well as his material he teaches.
He is very intelligent and knows exactly what he is talking about. He is the only teacher i know that will correct EACH student paper. It is clearly shown that he is dedicated to his work. THE BEST ENGLISH TEACHER!
The best english professor I have ever taken.
Excellent English teacher! I'd love to take all my English classes with him!
Extremely intelligent! So understanding and definitely knows how to teach. If I could choose, I would have taken all my EWRT and HUMI classes with him. He just tells you what you need to know and no BS. HIGHLY RECOMMNEDED!
good teacher.no bs. do ur essays and get an A..clarifies topics and helps students .. alot. good teacher......
Wonderful teacher, he's a really nice guy and very lenient. His lectures are insightful and interesting plus you learn a lot from this class. This class demands a lot of writing and reading, but that's the point of the class right?
I just can't think of anything bad about the class and the professor. He's just AMAZING! Take him for sure!
Very good professor. He gets pissed off if you don't participate in class or respond to questions, but, a very good teacher nonetheless. Expects you to know how to write well, so, papers are graded fairly tough, but not bad. I would suggest this class.
Great teacher. Hates fast food. Starts up interesting conversations. Does not care for much, the grading is pretty lenient. Not much writing work. A lot of reading though. Highly recommend him.
He is funny, very knowledgeable and will help the students to get better grades.A lot of research, but interesting topics and picky on mechanical errors.I learn a lot from him.
I am appalled that they don't allow him to teach next quarter. Brennan is by far the best EWRT teacher they have in school. I've learned so much from him. I would take all my EWRT classes with him if I could. It is really sad that he isn't a full-time.
He is the best English teacher I ever had. He is very knowledgable and very helpful. He gives you a broad view of American cultural issues. You have to read 3 books and do 6 writing assignment. I highly recommend him. You won't regret!!!
Brennan is the best english teacher I've ever had. He shows you what "critical thinking" really is. I'd really want to have all my other english classes with him. His grading is fair and you will learn a lot more other than just english in hi
Best teacher I've ever had! A lot of work but well worth it! Lenient with deadlines for legit excuses. Class is relaxed with interesting discussion. Mr. B. renewed my love of liturature after a string of bad HS ELIT classes.
Brennen is a pretty good english teacher. He makes teaching fun, keeps everyone entertained and up for learning. He is a very blunt teacher, if he has something to say, then he is going to say it. He makes you write alot, but they are all very easy.
An excellent professor. Brennan has a tough and to-the-point exterior, but he definately cares a lot about his students and his work as a teacher. He is clear about what it takes to get an "A" and is willing to help. The topics for the reading a
A very knowledgeable and friendly teacher; willing to help students and cares about students' learning and making progress. Highly recommended!
cool guy, knows his stuff
Mr. B, I know you read this. You ROCK. Don't ever stop teaching.
Great English teacher. He chooses topics that actually make you want to write and read. You learn much more than just how to write correctly. He might try to make you think hes mean but hes actually a really cool guy. Definite must take.
This teacher is THE best english teacher ever! Nice, cool, funny, caring, truthful and knows how to teach! Whoever says that this teacher sucks is trippin!
good teacher
I wouldn't say he's easy, citing sources was a real ****. However, I learned so much more in this class than grammar and punctuation. Awesome teacher, he's really understanding and helps a lot. Don't stop teaching at De Anza Mr. Brennan!
Mr. B, i know you read this and i must say, you're a lousy teacher! B is definitely a fitting letter for you!
Awesome teacher, glad i got a chance to take his class during the summer. If he teaches again, id highly recommend you guys to take his class.
He's a wonderful and caring techer! Clear and stright to the point...If you want to learn and improve your writing skills, I highly recommend him! Professor Brennan, don't every stop teaching! We need more teachers like you! If you think he's a lousy teacher, then you must have been a lousy student.
He is an excellent teacher. Very intelligent, and helps you personally improve your writing skills. Shows a true interest in his students, very nice and understanding. Accepts late work, however do not take advantage of the chances he gives you.
He is not that great.
Awesome teacher. Agree with what everyone else said...he's not an easy A but will help make other classes easieer by improving writing skills rather than just grading and giving back...stay on top of things in his class, don't fall behind, Very cool teacher, Your Awesome Brennan
THIS TEACHER IS SO AWESOME! he is extremely smart and that makes him extremely hot. i have learned so much from this teacher from everything from how to write a better paper to weed! he is very caring and understanding. he may seem intimidating but talk to him. he understands. thanks mr. brennan
Not a bad professor. If you're already good at writing, you'll have a very easy time; he grades essays relative to other essays in the class. Spends most of class time on sociopolitical rants so if you miss a day, don't stress. I turned in plenty of late papers and got an A in the class. Recommended
hes like one of those depressed comedians that just rants for hours on end. its great. no ****. just turn in papers and youre good.
Excellent teacher, actually makes you think and analyze. May come off as hard at first, but he very understanding and friendly. If you want to ACTUALLY LEARN and be challeged, Brennan is the teacher to go with.
brennan's a cool teacher.very educated and well-read in all aspects which make him extremely HOT.i like him cuz of his thorough explanations.he knows what he's doing n he grades essays fairly.he releases his class early all the time sumtimes the class is only 20 mins long.u'll learn beyond english.do urslf a favor by tking him. trust me. HE'S HOT!
He is really a great teacher. He is willing to help. From his class, i really learn a lot. His class are funny...Everyone should be enjoyed. Take his class.
Brennan is potentially a good prof. but his habit of letting the class out way too early is lame for serious students who don't want to battle rush hour for 40 mins of a class that is schedualed for 2 hours (my experience). He also spends too much time on his own rants rather than teaching you how to write well. One of my most dissapointing profs.
doesn't make good use of class time, if at all... often teaches only a fraction of the time he is supposed to! you don't learn much. he doesn't meet the course goals/description set out in the class schedual. not college quality, though to be fair, you do learn something just not as much as i had hoped
probably the best teacher at de anza. he also teaches at san jose state. true, he does let out class after max. 2 hours and min. 1 hour but that is because he thinks that is sufficient amount of time to explain assignments, discuss readings, and answer question. Lots of comments on the paper and specific help! he is very knowledgeable AND friendly!
I'm sad I didn't take more of his classes. The BEST eng teacher I've taken! He fronts like he's tough n mean but he's really a nice n easy going teacher. You do have to put sum effort but he give u chances to make up wrk n he is VERY helpful. He does everything in his power to help u get a good grade. HIGHLY recommend taking him!
Although he comes across as intimidating and harsh in front of the class at first, he's actually really nice when you talk with him in person. He really cares about the subject and is ~extremely~ helpful. Also, he knows his stuff and can be very convincing, and that makes him so HOT. I would have him again if I could.
i took him for a summer class and overall, id have to say he was an ok teacher. he came off mean and intimidating but you have to get used to his teachin style. juss do the reading and discuss and thats what makes him happy. an easy class if you just read and talk.
probably the best teacher at De Anza. This guy cares about his students and what he's teaching. He is a brilliant man who has so much to offer. He is honest, genuine, and isn't afraid to tell it like it is. De Anza should be honored to have this man teaching
A really good teacher, he gave us extra time for everything, and he is approachable with stuff that confuses you. BEST lit teacher i've ever had; We only had 4 papers to write, while other classes had 8-10, hez an easy grader, and he gives us good advice on how to change our first and second drafts. Also he explains good. Would recommend him
He is a really good teacher, and he is very helpful IF YOU ASK. and anyone that complains about how he dosent go over how to write a paper are idiots, because if you are in english 1A and you dont know how to construct a paper then you should not be at that level. awsome class!!!
REALLY awesome. He's a super cool guy and hes got a great sense of humor. His take on stories and poetry is really interesting. Speak up in his class-he really appreciates that.
didn't learn anything from his classes. Grading are somehow unfair/disorganized. Slackers have better grades than those who really worked hard for the class. he is the worst english teahcer. I will not take he again...good luck
Enjoyable lectures, straightforward essays and course. The comment below is dumb. You can work as hard as you want and still possibly not put out quality on par with someone who appears to be a slacker, so there's nothing wrong with Raymond's grading.
AWESOMEST TEACHER ALIVEEEE, HE IS SO HELPFUL AND LETS US OFF EARLY, HE CANCELED MOST OF OUR ESSAYS SO THAT WE COULD HAVE MORE TIME TO WORK ON THE IMPORTANT ESSAYS. HE GRADES REALLY LINIENTLY, AND COMMENTS ON YOUR WORK SO THAT YOU MAY CHANGE IT. TAKE HIM
EXCELLENT english teacher. Very helpful and doesn't mind going over requirements for papers in detail. Make sure to write down all the specifics for each paper and you will get an A. He is also VERY helpful in his office hours and will go over papers with you if you are having trouble. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Great, engaging teacher. Picked interesting reading material. Knows what it's like to be a college student. Probably not the best for ESL students though. If you like writing and reading, you should get an A.

This man does 3 thing well: smoke cigarettes, drink coffee, and teach a damn fine English class. Before the class, I HARDCORE sucked at English. Now I just "kinda" suck. Makes one on one time with every student. Grades papers by next session. Sometimes in Class! Highly Recommended. "A"'s come with effort. He will eject obnoxious students. Its funny.
As long as you do the paper as he wants you to, you pretty much have an A. Just always proof read your papers and make sure theymake sense. If you do that, you got an A handedto you. Wack ass topics but not to difficult. He doesnt care how long the essays are just as long as you give good evidence. Take him for an easy A.
Ok as long as you proof read your paper you'll do fine. not a very loose guy in the fact that he always lecturing on the material and if there's nothing more lets class leave early. he's very strict on grammer becuase he told me he used to correct papers in college so make sure you get that paper proof read!
Mr. Brennan is the best English teacher in De Anza. We had a lot of essays(8 in total, including take home final),but those are relatively short(3-5pages) except the final paper is 7 pages minimum. He explains the mechanics of each paper as he wants so that we won't get stuck. If you follow his directions, you are guaranteed to get a B or above.
He is a great professor for mature students. Do’s: Engage in class. Dare to have an opinion. Read the material more than once. Do not’s: Plagiarize. The school has bet $60,000 that they can find out if you plagiarized material. Leave your cell phone on. He is not afraid to stop the class and kick you out. Talk to your neighbor.
he is great. what he teach in really interest. his class inspired my thinkg. take him, if you want to improve your english.
Great teacher. Encourages discusion and lets other opinions be heard. Papers are straight forward. He is very thorough in his explanations of everything. He will read your papers before they are do if you email them to him. You will enjoy his class.
A good teacher but not a good grader. Difficult to get 'A'. Drop out rate is high. If you want to move up your average grade point. You better take other instructor. He pays no attention and consideration on your hard works. Good luck to you if you insist your pick.
DON'T TAKE HIM. about half the people dropped which is very unusual for an english class. grades too hard. take a full grade down if you make a 2 errors in your paper. offers no rewrites and biased against certain people. my friend made fun of me because he got an easy A taking someone else. there're lots of other english teachers to take. avoid!!!
Brennan is a good teacher but he is very hard. I dropped out because I care about my GPA. I don't advise taking him unless english is your forte and even though he does make class entertaining he is hard grader!!!!!!!
Professor Brennan is a good teacher. He is very helpful and clear on what he wants for essays. He is nice and I got As on almost all of my essays, if not Bs. His lectures are interesting. I recommend him.
As everyone had said before, if you put effort into your essays, read the material, and pay attention in class, you will most likely do well in the class. He's funny and he has a lot of opinions about life. You learn more than English in his class. I liked his class and I recommend him (but if you're a slacker, don't take him).
I wrote the comment below, and I just realized I messed up. I had to revise that comment numerous times and missed that "an". Anyway, you get the picture.
I'm going to be blunt. If you are a lazy slacker who just wants an easy A, then do not take English from Professor Brennan. If you are interested in expanding your mind via the study of English, and are willing to put in the work to do so, then take English from Professor Brennan. Show up to class, participate in discussions, and work your ass off.
Dr. Brennan is passionate about what he teaches, genuinely wants his students to learn, and doesn't apologize for his convictions - which is a rare quality. The work is moderately simple, straightforward, and the late work policy is more than fair. He is erudite, sagacious, has a wry sense of humor and a vast vocabulary. I am enraptured.
He is a great instructor but really hard, get a C. Not recommend.
I will forever remember Professor Brennan's attention to detail and appreciation for precision in writing. He expresses innovated ideas while taking students on a literary journey. Be prepared to read and work hard. Condition yourself to heavily annotate the text to open mindful writing topics and imagination. Your papers will be second to none.
Dr. Brennan is an amazing teacher! (If you aren't lazy!) No matter how much I struggled, no matter how much I wanted to give up, Dr. Brennan helped me every step of the way so that I can finish. His reading material are books you would not typically read, but you learn a great deal from them. Best thing about them is that their cheap or reasonable!
Prof. Brennan is probably one of the best instructors in De Anza. As far as I know, only the interim Dean of Language Arts Department, Lydia Hearn, is comparable to him. He is intelligent, helpful and enthusiastic about literature. The reading materials are carefully chosen and full of insights. He really changes my life!
Outstanding teacher! I learned more from him than all of my other teachers combined this quarter - if he's available for your class -- TAKE HIM!!
leeegit
He is amazing. He really improves any writing skills you have (or don't have). He teaches you about interesting concepts that you will use for the rest of your life. He's a fair grader. Take this class, you won't regret it. Thanks for an amazing course, Mr. Brennan! (winter quarter '09! section 2)
Most English classes are boring, but Brennan's class is VERY interesting. This is not your typical English topic...can be dull, but it's interesting & you actually learn about the world. He's a fair grader & somewhat hard. Assignments, midterm paper, & final paper are fair. Class is worth it. If you try and show interest, you'll get a good grade.
I have never learned so much about the world in an english class before! There is a lot of work... papers due every week but they are all easy. Hes so into what hes teaching it makes the class interesting, and i was always looking forward to going. Very helpful when needed and very understanding. This was my favorite english class
Brennan lectures about very interesting topics in his classroom. Papers are due almost every class meeting, and some are rather difficult. You definitely have to put a lot of effort into his class, but his grading is fair, and you will learn a lot.
The man is a genius, plain and simple. It is probably the only class I've taken where my brain hurt afterwards; not from boredom but from all the knowledge I had just gained. It literally felt like my brain was getting bigger and better. However, God help you if he hasn't had his coffee or the class didn't do their homework reading.
Reading some of these comments made me hesitant to take his class in fear of receiving a bad grade, but I'm extremely happy that i have. He knows his stuff. He doesn't waste your time with busy work. Everything you do is really interesting and so are the class dicussions. Dont slack off and try, and ALWAYS be prepared god have mercy if you're not
Two adjectives to describe Mr. Brennan: down to earth and extremely bright. He brings everything to the table as a teacher and expects you to do the same as his student. Even though he's by far one of the best teachers I've had, his class is not a cake walk. He's tough but fair. Work hard and you'll do fine.
He intrigues me..
He's extremely dedicated which is apparent from the start but jeez, enough with the dead poet's society/dangerous minds teacher act. No, seriously, he's an awesome teacher IF you AREN'T lazy and unmotivated and actually love learning and sharing what you've learned with the rest of the class. A bit of a rough edge on him but he's overall a good guy
I'm taking EWRT1A with him right now(winter quarter)and I must say, he comes off super intimidating in the beginning but he's actually really helpful. He might seem judgmental, but he's really not. I was scared to even approach him but I'm glad that I'm taking this class! I didn't think I would say this but I love that we are working on poems
His green sheet felt as if it was a threat (literally a packet of papers) but sounds and looks legitimate. Listening to his lectures automatically makes you think critically. He's influential and will have you realize that being a interactive student is the key to knowing yourself and feeling confident when writing papers.
Amazing man. This is the only teacher who could teach Darwin in a literature class and make me care in the slightest. I am not a scientist, but this class sure made me believe I was. Fantastic, amazing, etc. Great guy. Plus, he disliked all the asinine character-types just as much as I do. In real life, not in books, I mean.
He is a really good teacher. I'm taking his class right now and on my last 3 papers I got A's. In the beginning of the quarter he seems like a mean teacher, but he isn't at all. TAKE HIS CLASS IF YOU REALLY WANT TO LEARN!
Brennan comes off as very intimidating the first day of class. Don't let this fool you, he is a great teacher! I really feel that my writing is at its best after taking his course this winter. Read and don't write crappy papers. He's got an amusing twisted sense of humor which is a plus!
Professor Brennan is a WONDERFUL teacher. He may come off as a uptight strict to the core man on the first day, but don't let that fool you. He is the BEST ewrt teacher at deanza. he actually takes time to Help you understand your mistakes. if i could i would take him again.
OMG, he's one of a few BEST teachers at DA. Not an easy A thou. u have to work HARD if u want a good grade. total 7 papers, and only one of them is short!! but he will help u with all ur work. he's just awesome!!!
He is the most amazing teacher. I have learned so much from him. He is very helpful. Took him in the summer, 6 weeks, 6 papers. HE IS GREAT. You will not be disappointment.
He was very intimidating during the first day of class, but he wasn't as scary as I thought he would be. Took his class in the summer, so we had a paper due every week, which was very difficult. I learned so much from taking his class, despite the difficulty. Just read before coming to class, don't BS your papers, and you'll get the grade you want
Great teacher with a no BS teaching style. I took him a couple years back and he remains one of my best teachers. I'm a pretty good writer so I kind of slacked off on the first paper and got a C. After that, I actually LISTENED and worked hard and got A's on all the rest of my papers. You will learn a lot.
Dr. Brennan is a straightforward, blunt professor, and I loved that about him and his class. His class was my first class during my first quarter in college, and even though I was intimidated and petrified, I left that class feeling like I had gained so much insight and knowledge. He's an amazing teacher - he made me want to listen and learn.
Read some of the reviews, and they're largely right. Very scary at first. Dude, you have NO CLUE. This guy is absolutely the awesomest teacher...evarz yo. Learned more than I did all of high school. I really hope he doesn't die soon from smoking like he keeps joking about :(
1st day of class he was very scary. Be sure to participate in class or else he'll get mad. He's a nice person if you have questions and if you need help, but I didn't like the reading material for his class. He doesn't give you BS when he grades your essays, but there's an essay almost every week. I couldn't keep up with all the work. Good luck.
Like eveyone else says, he's scary on the first day. However, it's just his way of saying there's going to be no BS. He's incredibly bright and my writing improved tenfold after several meetings with him. He's honest, brief, and will always be willing to discuss what your work. Every assignment is clearly explicated and laid out. Great class!
This instructor is really hard if you don't put in time to read the book and analyze it right. You will have some summary(3 pages) due every day. And 3 papers in the course. It's not an essay class.~~~
He is intimidating in the first week; don't let him scare you off! At least 1 assignment per week. Class is mandatory. Goes off-topic sometimes, but are often interesting points. 2 papers, 14 summaries/analyses total. His critiques on your work will help you improve your writing by the tenfold. Hands down, one of my favorite professors of all time!
Literally the best teacher I've ever had at De Anza hands down. He's extremely knowledgeable, helpful, and just a great person to learn from. You don't just learn about writing; he updates you on current events, history, politics, etc. Cliche as it may sound, his classes dramatically altered my way of thinking and in turn changed my life.
HE'S REALLY HELPFUL AND KNOWLEDGEABLE. SCARY AT FIRST BUT HE'S THE ONLY COLLEGE TEACHER THAT ACTUALLY WILL GO AROUND THE CLASS AND DISCUSS EVERY SINGLE PAPER OF EACH STUDENTS IF NEEDED. NO TESTS OR QUIZZES AT ALL. HE GIVES US 8 DAYS TO DO OUR TAKE HOME FINAL, WHICH IS AWESOME. STRONGLY RECOMMEND MR. BRENNAN!!!
few times do i come across a professor who i feel inspired to review. if you strive toward improving your writing skills take brennan. do understand that this class requires a lot of work and dedication, but in the end it is worth it! it is highly possible to get an a! a passionate, educated, very intriguing professor! don't be intimidated!
Extremely intelligent individual. He's not an easy a, but your writing will improve DRAMATICALLY. By far the best professor I've ever had. He wil even take the time to go over the class papers with the students and he even wrote a sample intro for us. Over a a very high-quality teacher. Not to mention absolutely hilarious.
Worth the effort. He is tough and expects more than a lot of other teachers. Doesn't waste time or fill up the class with useless activities. Intimidating the first day but it's possibly just his way to make the class a bit smaller.
TAKE THIS CLASS! Had ewrt2 over summer with him. He is GREAT, tho totally tries to scare of slackers on the first week. Your English WILL improve, no matter how good you think you already are. Our class also learned a ton, both from the book we analyzed and when he's off topic (very worldly). He's like the cool professor you see in old movies. ;D
He is REALLY good at trying to scare the slackers away from his class. Other than that, his lectures and the poems/stories he chooses are interesting. I really felt like my writing improved. He's very helpful if you just ask.
the most amazing teacher ever. some discussion topic were not on the text, but amazingly interesting. its an easy A if you do the work :) but seriously...he's one of those teachers that you will remember when your older just because of the memories from his class. seriously amazing.
Looking for an easy class? Do reconsider since English can determine your success in life. This class showed me what writing papers in university would be like; it's serious sh.t-not the easy journals you write about your feelings like in many classes at De Anza. His stories were informative, witty, and thought-provoking. Tough class but persevere!
AWSOME TEACHER! If you're looking for a class to slack in this is not the class for you! He expects a lot from his students and is not about BS. I can honestly say that taking this course altered my way of thinking immensely. You're writing will improve, best english class I have ever taken. Stick with it he is a great professor
Amazing teacher !He is one of those teachers that for sure ill remember.A very knowledgeable man who tell you how it is, with out any reservation. DONT drop the class , he might be scary at first but totally worth the stay. You will learn a lot and for sure be able to critical think for yourself by the end :)
Brennan is truly amazing. He transformed my writing style for the best, and was always there to help. This was definitely one of the hardest classes I have taken, but also the most rewarding. Don't let the first 2 weeks of work scare you away; stick with the class and you will be very happy you did. Best english professor I have ever had.
At first, the class and the workload were intimidating. But once you follow his sample and write the way he likes, the class is cake. Keep your essays simple. He's a funny guy in a cynical way. Don't fall behind on any work! It'll pile, and you'll get lazy! I kinda enjoyed this class tbh, and you actually get used to writing essays every week.
Great professor, My suggestion is to survive the first few weeks that are intimidating, u will love this Gentleman. Very nice guy!!!!!!very helpful!!!!
Excellent professor! Your reading and writing will greatly improve by the end of the quarter. He is very helpful, and overall a great guy. Tons of homework; however, very useful.
I do not understand how this teacher has such high ratings. He was incredibly rude to the entire class. I am a hard worker, do not mind a challenging class, but this class was just ridiculous. SO MUCH HOMEWORK. weekly essays that he grades ruthlessly. Any tiny mistake will get you majorly docked. Overall incredibly rude, disrespectful teacher.
He teaches college students not high school students He's tough, unsympathetic, but the truth is he'd helped me evolve as a college student more than any professor. If you think he's difficult, just imagine a university professor. Come to class prepare, read the text repeatedly, remember you're writing ARGUEMENTS NOT RESEARCH PAPERS.
Professor Brennan is a great English professor. He wants his students to improve the quality of their writings. He gives a clear cut grade on the essays. He will not be lenient. I enjoyed his lectures and his humor. The book was a great read and hard to put down. Ask him questions during class or after. He will clear anything up.
He may seem intimidating, but he's not bad. He is actually really nice, and most importantly he's extremely helpful. Any questions you have he will answer & even after he's explained it once or twice and you don't get it, he doesn't care he'll find a different way to help you until you understand. As long as you read and do the work you'll be fine.
I loved this class. 12 papers and 10pg final. You need to understand the fundamentals the topics he presents, and how they apply to the bigger picture. The reading was extremely interesting, but class discussions can be intimidating. He comes off as rude to students, but if you can take his personality with a grain of salt you'll learn a lot.
I had very high expectations for Brennan, but I was disappointed. It seemed like no matter how much work you put in, the ridiculous amount of papers (over 10 due in the last 2 weeks, including a 10 page final) and tough grading made this class impossible. Don't risk ruining your GPA. EWRT 2 is too important, especially if you're looking at Berkeley
His class is hard but worth it. I learned a lot from his class and have significantly improved my writing. Although I had to work my butt off everyday trying to decipher the reading and attempting to write summaries and analyses, I did learn a lot and benefited from it in the long run. Ask him for help and he'll help you, no doubt. Homework evryday
This was a great class to take. I was planning to just take it for credits to transfer to a different school, but I really enjoyed my time. He's funny, and he is also a firm, but fair grader. Assigns weekly analyses and summaries, maybe multiple in a week. Over time, they get easier to write. Definitely a good class. I would take it again.
At first, he seems a bit intimidating since he's not afraid to speak his mind about a lot of issues; however, he is actually one of the most understanding and kindest professors I've ever encountered. I highly, highly recommend him! Be prepared to learn about things that you'll be able to use outside of the classroom. Funny, witty, smart guy!
I listened to good ratings and was disappointed. Yes, I did learn some interesting concepts in his class (but none of them were related to english; they all had to do with readings he gave us) and he is approachable one-on-one, but I could not agree with his "tough love" teaching style and how he "taught" concepts, and I got a 5 on the AP Eng exam.
Glad I took this class and glad it's over. Hard professor. Makes you work for your grade. Lots of readings and one essay due every week. Grade is based on quizzes and papers. Readings + discussions got me thinking about poverty and other social issues. You don't need to read the book if you pay attention in class.
Really great class; you learn a lot about the world in addition to how to be a good writer. Honestly, if you're already a pretty good writer, this class is an easy A. If not, he will still help your writing improve a lot. Interesting articles/book. Is willing to work with and help students as long as you as you ask.
23 articles to read, 1 book (330 pages), 6 Summaries, 5 Analyses, 9 quizzes, 1 midterm paper(5 pages), 1 Final paper(10 pages). Very willing to help his students improve their writing and is clear about your grade, which most teachers aren't. Very sarcastic, but funny guy. Has a lot of resources to help you do well, but lots of work.
Like many English teachers alike, he grades papers (analyses, summaries, essay papers) based on the context of articles, the writing structure, and the use of wordings and vocabulary, so if you read the articles carefully, you should be in good shape in papers and quizzes. The poverty and inequality is a reasonable theme for the class as well.
Genuinely one of the best professors at De Anza! Dr. Brennan has helped my writing, vocabulary, and critical thinking skills immensely. He is a strict grader and teacher, but only to encourage his students to hold themselves to a higher standard. Our classroom topic was focused on social inequality, and it was so refreshing to be his student.
Professor Brennan is the best teacher that I ever had, people should be glad that this kind of teacher exists in De Anza. After taking his class, my Writing and Reading skills just went up to a different level. Professor Brennan even wrote a recommendation letter to my transfer application, it was my honor to be his student and I love his class!!
I wasnt planning on staying in his class because he was intimidating & harsh at first, weekly summaries, analysis, reading quiz, 5pg midterm, 8pg finals (printed) on social inequality, don't worry you'll have lots to talk about, readings are online. Detailed feedback & helpful when you ask for help. I'm glad I stayed, never thought I'd get an A!
I took EWRT002 over the summer with Brennan. The work he assigns is not difficult, but be ready to have readings every single night. He can be intimidating and definitely speaks his mind, but he is very approachable outside of class and is more than willing to help you if needed. It is an easy A if you do the readings and do well on your papers.
Professor Brennan is AWESOME- take his class if you want to improve your writing and become a better student! The quarter I took his class we focused on writing thorough papers on poetry and short stories. Teaches his class in a great way, gives great feedback, very helpful even though he is blunt! Very cool person!
Professor Brennan is one of the best English teachers I've had! He's very knowledgeable and has a great sense of humor. The first couple weeks were really intimidating because he seemed like a real hard ass, but he's actually a great professor and is very approachable. Like other students, my writing skills improved a lot from this class.
I did well in this class but this guy made me crazy. He is extremely pessimistic and rude. I never learned anything from the lectures, he just rants and get mad at people for not doing something the way he expects. Assigns a ton of punitive busy work.
Professor Brennan is amazing. Seriously one of the best professors at De Anza. Although he can be a tough grader I really learned a lot in his class and his lectures are really interesting. He's always available to help students improve on their writing.
I failed the class and I deserved it. Professor Brennan was a great teacher and he is super supportive. You only fail when you don't work. Get ready to read, weekly assignments and quizzes. 4 essays. there will be a handful of analysis and summaries.
EWRT 2 is overall a challenging class. Professor Brennan is very difficult to deal with, I want to be able to write more critically and flawless like him and not make any mistakes. He's very helpful in improving your writing. In the end, you will thank him one day.
It's not really a hard class, once you get the hang of writing the way he wants you to. He wants you to write your ideas and back them up with strong grammar and writing. He can tell if you'd improved throughout the class. It can be hard to put up with his rudeness.
DO NOT RECOMMEND! There are far better, and easier, professors at De Anza and I don't think this class is for anyone trying to pass with a decent grade. The readings are incredibly long and extremely boring. Do yourself a favor and pick any other professor. Even if you like his odd sense of humor, that won't get you an A.
Its just so much work, every week we have to write either a summary or analysis. Which doesn't seem so bad right? Wrong, they are mostly things that aren't so interesting. All reading is either political, scientific, or religious. I mean at the same time he is a great Profesor its just so much work!
I've taken two courses with professor Brennan, both have been great experiences. He's quite knowledgeable and funny. It's not an easy A class, but you can get an A. He always lets us out early which is awesome. Overall a good class. Don't take his classes if you're soft or easily triggered. I want to say more but I'm out of characters :
This was probably one of the HARDEST classes I've ever taken. So many essays to write within a week, it felt so impossible. I used to think I was a good writer (given my AP Literature grade in high school) but I was wrong. Although this class was tons of work/hard, I learned a lot. He is an amazing, funny, and respected professor.
There are A LOT of essays assigned in this class, don't be fooled by the lack of the word "essays" in the syllabus. Look for "summary" and "analysis" because those are the essays and we had to write 11 not including the midterm and final paper. But he's actually real great and entertaining. It's very obvious he actually cares about his students.
"You come here." Is what he says to you if he catches you on your phone on the first day of class. He scared off all the slackers on the first two weeks of class. Some call him a bully, some ask, "How's he allowed to teach that way." He gives detailed feedback on how to improve your writing, he molds you into an academic writer.
Very tough teacher for a 1A class. Sure I want to focus more on academic college level writing than the meaningless essays I wrote in 211. Geez, I didn't like Brennan's personality and how insults the class's performance on essays, he grades papers ASAP more than any teacher I've had. I'm debating to take EWRT 2 with him or not.
He is a good professor that states his expectations at the beginning and grades fairly based on how you write rather than what you write (as long as its somewhat to mostly accurate). However, he should teach in a political science class rather than an English class, as his curriculum is 100% based on politics. Assigns too many papers in my opinion.
His class came off more as Poli Sci class than an English one, because of the Political themes from the book and articles he assigned. He scolds at you if you don't know your rights (very unrelated), he carries a little B.O.R booklet with him at all times (no joke) He's very picky on grammer, he wants you to write better, it pays off but he's harsh
This class was difficult but it really develops your writing skills especially grammar. The first few assignments are tough but they set you up to succeed the rest of the quarter. He was always understanding and supportive and offers help if you need it. If you need help ask because if you don't and you keep scoring low it's on you
I'll put it simply: this is a tough class. You need to care about what you're writing about, or you're not gonna succeed. However, he cares about teaching, and wants to see you become a better self. The textbook is this really cheap poli-sci essay collection, and some basic current events/govt info is recommended. Overall, it's an absolute blast.
Probably the toughest 1A teacher. Better to be sharp thinker than writing those meaningless poems or creative eassys you wrote in the past. On an unrelated note he's very outspoken on his political views, it's an English class not a Poli Sci claass! He's very good at helping you be a better writer, gives lots of feedback on to improve.
Please do not take his class or online class!! He gives a lot of homework, every week you will have a quiz with 5 short answers after you read so many pages, also essay every week too and summary ...... a lotttttt of work, if you like to do a lot of work, you can take him....
PLEASE! PLEASE don't take his class unless you're 100% sure you will get at least B without any help of extra credits. The instructor was pretentious and he kept procrastinating the grading which didn't help the students' improvement AT ALL!
Very political class. Weekly responses on sections of Kendzior's "Flyover Country". 3 Summaries, 2 Analyses, 2 essays. Definitely harder than most professors when grading essays. Has a specific structure on how essays are written in his class. Really makes you work for it.
Start things early and follow every direction. He didn't mind when I spammed him with my drafts, asking for feedback, days before the deadline. He will deduct a lot if you don't follow his criteria. In grammar, he usually deducted me 3-7% every time, but you can ace the other categories. Some time required for his creative, weekly question prompts.
Not hard at all. Attendance not mandatory but he does keep track. We only had to read one book and no textbook. All the assignments are about the book and just short writings about the chapters. I was working full time and barely putting any effort and still pulled off a B. If you're a good student it should be free.
I just completed ENG 1A this year with professor Brennan and his class is tough. His quizzes aren't hard but he is strict when it comes to grading assignments. If professor Brennan was a cop on the freeway, he would pull you over for going 66 mph on a 65. He also has an attitude problem. My suggestion would be to find a different professor.
You do one assignment incorrectly and any chance you have for an A is doomed.
Well-versed. Approachable. The man loves the craft, and it made me want to love the craft even more. Invest in the discussions, invest in sharing ideas and being alive in the class. It'll do you well. Be smart. Do good.
He's really easy if you just follow the directions.
I haven't met him personally. Brennan gives feedback on papers, but it feels more nitpicky. Keep the format consistent and follow his guidelines for essays! Brennan has some quizzes for the first couple of weeks, but those were easy to do. Every week has a paper due.
Worst class I've ever taken. Extremely hard grader and does not even give feedback if he was not satisfied with your work. Do yourself a favor and don't take this class with this professor.
Great teacher, describes what you did well, and not so well perfectly. However, minus points as he is sometimes very difficult to get into contact with. I sent several emails asking about turning in late work, or for further explanation on assignments, but never got a response. Be wary of that, otherwise he's pretty good.
The most excruciating English professor I have met. Instructions are not very clear, so SPEAK UP, if you aren't a sensitive student. Feedback on papers are vague that you do not really know what you are doing wrong, so go to his online office hours if you want pass his class. I have two months to turn my grade (C-) to a passing one. Wish me luck.
Does not give clear instructions nor feedback on what you did wrong. Class average grade tends low on assignments, even for students absolutely trying their best. Rigid in his ways and tends to go on angry rants. He could be a much better teacher if he actually gave feedback. I feel like I learned nothing and I still did better than most others.
I wouldn't recommend taking him, learn from my mistake! Unclear instructions, no extra credit, and tough grader. So many papers and some of them you need for the next week (like a summary that helps you write the essay), he simply doesn't grade them fast enough, so you have to give a shot in the dark, because you're still waiting for his feedback.
This professor is so GOOD at his craft! He goes over your papers and gives good feedback for you before you turn it in. Take him, and you will be inspired to read more from his selection of authors, such as Raymond Carver. Speak up in class and you will do great! Take him! Take him! Take him!
Professor Brennan has a specific teaching style, but if you engage with it, the class isn't too bad. Definitely use unstuckstudy and the free textbook to supplement the lectures. Attendance is mandatory, so don't slack off.
Brennan will most DEFINITELY improve your writing, but as a precursor to that he will also grade very harshly (if you get one bad grade on an assignment your overall grade will suffer). Would recommend as he was easily accessible and gave feedback if requested. No redo's on assignments so be careful, good luck fellow classmates.
He needs to keep his Political Views to himself or teach Poli instead. The readings were interesting, and my writing improved beyond my expectations. He does care. His detailed feedback is better than any teacher I've ever had.
Prof. Brennan is easily accessible and seems genuinely caring, but he grades harshly and pretty slowly. Assignments are worth a lot, with about 2 per week plus a quiz. Feedback isn't automatic, and you have to ask. There are only 2 essays in the quarter, but personally, I wouldn't take him again just because I disliked his unclear grading style.
