not bad...he knows what hes doing and he'll help as long as you put in effort as well
This class is so hard. But he makes it as interesting and easy as possible.
You have to make a serious time commitment if you want to do well in this class. The professor is very personable and makes a potentially boring class very interesting and beneficial.
Dr. Christensen is amazing. Everyone knows that this class it not easy, but he does everything he can to help you succeed. He makes a conscious effort to learn the name of each student and encourage participation in a large class.
Dr. Christiansen is one of the best teachers I've ever had. His classes are tough but I've never learned so much.
Very hard class. You better love writing. Professor Christenson does do a good job teaching some hard material. Except for the stats session in the last month. Good luck, you will need it.
I don't know what the heck everyone else is saying because this guy is a real jerk. One of the most arrogant professors I've come across.
Dr. Christensen is the best professor in the political science department. He brings class to life. Although his class requires a lot of effort, the amount of learning is rewarding. Christensen is very approachable and helpful.
He tries to make the class interesting. But, to no avail. There are lots of papers, but he does do a good job explaining them. I only had a problem with the last part about stats. I had already taken stats 221 and i think he confused me more than helping me.
Everyone knows going into the class it will be hard. The Key is to get a good TA. Writing isn't such a bad section, it is the stats that will kill you. Unfortunately, christi. doesn't know the subject well enough to answer any of your questions. Just don't miss class.
This class was hard but he was very helpful and understanding if you talk to him outside of class. He has a lot of energy and is really funny, his lectures are great. His tests (at least for this class) are hard but fair. I will definately take 200 from him.
Professor Christensen is an engaging lecturer who wants his students to succeed. However, the class is poorly organized, difficult, and a lot of work. If you are a poli sci major I would recommend this class, but dont take it on a lark.
The class first of all is quite difficult. Prof Christensen is kinda looney but a nice guy and wants you to succeed. Work closely with your TA and go to all classes. There are in class assignments and in lab there are quizes and homework assignments. You will need all the points you can get
One of the best professors at BYU. Yes, the classes are hard but 200 is meant to be hard. It would be horrific without Christensen teaching. His stories make everything at least somewhat interesting, which is tough to do with this subject. His were classes that I honestly looked forward to. I learned a ton.
He was a great teacher, very funny. The course is extremely hard and time consuming. Good luck, but if you have to take the class, then he is a good teacher to take it from.
Professor C. is the best professor I have ever had. This class is the hardest class I have ever taken, but he makes sure we understand the material and he is always willing to take a few moments aside to help each person understand better. Also with a class of 200+ he tries to learn everyones name which adds a personal touch. Take him for PLSC 200.
really funny and clear
Funny. Clear. I've never seen a teacher so willing to help students, ever. The class is hard, but learning to write is difficult. It's not hard if you put in the time and follow his suggestions. Great professor. Without him it would be boring and horrible.
Professor Christensen is humorous and an excellent lecturer. It's the papers that will irk you, however. If you put an obscene amount of time and effort into them, you're likely but not guaranteed to get a good grade on them. No matter what you'll find you're still graded harshly. The code name system in this class is ridiculous.
good luck, glad i'm not you
Dr. Christensen is awesome, he is very approachable, very fun and enthusiastic and a great teacher.
Very happy. Fun class to attend.
Hard class, but Christensen is a great teacher. It was challenging., but honestly I think very few people know how to write well and it's about time a class pushes students to learn to write well. Big workload, but not impossible. I didn't like TAs before i took this class, but my TA was so helpful and fun.
I loved this class. It was one of the hardest I've ever taken, but it's so much fun to go to lectures. As long as you talk with the TA's, then you'll do ok. Enjoy!
This class is very time consuming but not difficult if you are willing to work. If you sign up for it, plan on it being your most time-consuming class and don't whine about the workload. Awesome teacher - very helpful, tries hard to explain, and very entertaining. Use your TA - they will help a lot. Never miss class. You can get an A if you work.
Hard class, but Christensen is an enthusiastic professor that will do anything to help you. TA's are the key to this class.
Wow, this class is so hard, you'll want to cry. If you can try and take it with a differt professor, because there is no way it could be harder than with Christensen. Great guy, crazy hard class. If you like to skip class this is NOT for you, Go to your labs, and class everyday and you'll pass, but it won't be fun.
He's fair and the most helpful teacher I've ever had. He WANTS you to succeed. I suggest starting on the assignments the day you get them so you'll be ready to go to him for help. The subject isn't interesting, but he helps you survive. If he realizes that something was unclear or unfair, he'll fix it. He'll give you his undivided attention.
He teaches really well and easy to understand but the amount of writing everyweek is what makes him hard
Professor Christensen is amazing! He explains things really well and makes everything interesting, even statistics! I thought I was going to die with the class being 1 1/2 hours, but time flies faster than in some of my 50 minute classes! And this class really isn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be, just committ time to it and you'll be fine!
Great guy. He is hilarious and a little crazy. I learned a ton from his class
This class is really time consuming. The papers take a great deal of work. Professor Christensen is a great guy and his lectures are really amusing. The subject matter is not necessarily gripping but it is a major requirement. Nielson (the other professor who teaches this course) substituted for day and he was extremely boring.
Be prepared for this class. It definitely won't be easy, and like everyone says, it's time consuming. But if you just go to class and lab, and talk with your T.A. about your papers, you'll do absolutely fine. Christensen is hilarious, fair, and wants you to do well. Just one of those classes you have to get thru, and Christensen makes it bearabl
I don't think he cares if his students succeed. He made it clear on a few occasions that he thinks undergraduate writing is unimportant. That is probably why everything is graded by TA's, some of whom are just plain incompetent. People love this class because it is useful. Others hate it because it is unreasonable.
Good teacher, tough class
Wonderful class; very challenging but very rewarding; Prof Christensen brings humor and interest to a potentially boring subject...take this class...even if you aren't an IR or Poly Sci major. Don't skip class; attend labs; get TA help and you'll be just fine.
Tough but fair.
The class is tough, but remember that it is four credits, not just 3. To get an A don't turn a paper in late- extra time on it will not compensate for the late penalty. You will have to review your paper with your TA once or twice before it's due. Papers are difficult expectations are clear. He is very helpful in class and when you visit him.
Bottom line Christensen is strict but fair. Makes himself available in his office for help. Reading is heavy for this class so beware. Basically all lectures and readings are fair game for test which makes it hard to study. Group projects required as well, plus a paper. Effort required
Lectures where vague and not very useful. Christensen uses them in place of a shrink, telling useless and irrelevant stories. The grading is ridiculous and because there was a complete lack of examples unless your really good at the guess what the professors thinking game you'll never give them the paper they want. however since its a prereq GL!!!
He's such a fun professor, but also a great teacher. I would suggest to just read the notes, attend all lectures, and turn in assignments on time!!! it's a difficult class if you procrastinate and miss class.
They call this class PlSc 666 because it's so hard. However, like any other good class at BYU, as long as you attend the lecture and do your reading and homework, you'll do fine. This class is a TON of work, but keep on top of things and it won't seem bad.
Thinks way too highly of himself and won't discuss anything with you if you have questions. Has the TAs do all of the grading, which is very frustrating. Ridiculously hard class. Yes, some of the stuff you learn is useful, but not nearly worth it. Only take this class if you have to. Many people like him, but I thought he was obnoxious.
Hard. But so worth it. People who pay attention to detail will be rewarded.
Tough class. Textbook reading & case studies (from packet) for each class period. Class participation required - can be called on at any time & must volunteer at least one comment per class. Exams were law-school style: given fact pattern that you then have to apply the principles you've learned to analyze. Challenging but loved it
They take pride from the famous 666. He is a good professor but TAs are a nightmare. While cooking the data, they compete among themselves and hate the sudents that make them look badly. Nothing makes them happy. They are super tough graders. Once they label you as a C student, no matter how much you might excel, you will still be a C student.
My favorite professor at BYU. The class is heavy in reading and he is a tough grader, but also very fair. He is always willing to meet with you and help you out. I highly recommend taking at least one class from him while you are at BYU
Professor Christensen makes Poli Sci really fun. The material is very useful and often times really different from what most people have done before. If you focus and are willing to spend time reviewing things from class there is no reason for you not to do well. He and the TA's always make themselves available to help you Great Class!
The class is difficult, but you will learn a ton. The Prof is way funny, very fair, and goes out of his way to be available to his students. Make sure you talk with the TAs alot and schedule sufficient time for the many long papers you are expected to write.
The class was fairly difficult, but I learned quite a bit.
Professor Christensen is one of the best professors I have ever had. His Japan Comparative Politics class has difficult exams (a midterm and a comprehensive final) and many long readings. However, the readings prepare you for class which prepares you for the exams. I only studied my cumulative class and readings notes for the exams and got As.
He is a great lecturer but avoid him like the plauge it you want to save your GPA.
Professor Christensen is one of the best professors at BYU. I learned more in this class about writing than I did in three other English writing classes. The class is extremely difficult and time consuming but well worth it.
This class is hard, but I learned so much and was challenged. He is up front about how hard the class is and tells you what it takes to pass. His lectures are funny and engaging. If you are willing to put in the work you will pass. I really liked this class because it gave me practical skills.
Professor Christensen is an awesome professor! He is really funny, teaches clearly, and makes what would be a really awful class be manageable and enjoyable while in the class. Hardest part of the class is keeping up with the weekly writing assignments, but there's plenty of help and the class is super beneficial to you once you complete it.
Great guy. Hard class, and he knows it. This class is not for the feeble or the weak at heart. You will be writing papers. You will be writing them well. You will be learning a lot. Set aside time to do the homework assignments. You will need it. Grammar Nazis will find themselves at home. He is an eccentric, great guy. Loves Japan. TAKE THIS CLASS
Dr. Christensen is the best! He's super funny and makes class very enjoyable. PL SC 200 isn't as bad as everyone says it is - if you put some decent effort into the assignments you'll do fine. Definitely take this course from Dr. Christensen!
I love Dr. Christensen, he is hilarious, passionate, competent, and demanding. This capstone course was HARD bc I cared about doing good research, but he is extremely understanding and willing to help. His syllabus is incredibly clear about gradingexpectations. I would take this class again for the learning and growth I gained from it.
I just love Prof. Christensen. About all students do. I've worked for him, and he cares SO MUCH about student success. He was really good with helping everyone with their capstone. His class is easy to get an A in if you put in the effort and time. I wish I could take every class from him; he's a joy!
My major was physics. I took this as an elective, loved it, switched my major, then got a B.A. and M.A. in political science. No regrets.
Brother Christensen is amazing!! This class is not about anything that interesting. It is about writing and grammar which is incredibly boring. Christensen made is super interesting! I loved every lecture. TAKE IT FROM HIM! It is hard and a lot of work but so rewarding. He wants you to succeed and honestly to learn. Favorite class at BYU.
Really hard to get A's on papers, but I put in reasonable effort and averaged a B+ for the papers. Final crushed me, make sure to pay attention when it gets to statistics portion.
Poli200 is tough, there's no way around that. If you have to take it, take Christensen. He's goofy, helpful, and very intelligent. He makes talking about grammar, research, and stats fun. Quizzes and practices (participation) every week in lab. Big assignments every 1 or 2 weeks. They're tough, but you learn a lot. Office hours will save you.
One of the best classes I've taken. More like a graduate style class. Lots of discussion.
Do your assignments early. Sitting in the front row is a 4D experience...
Professor Christensen is awesome. Writing papers will become second nature to you. You learn a lot of skills that will benefit you in other classes. But make no mistake, this class is hard. Be ready to spend countless hours on papers. Pollock will become your new best friend. The final will destroy you.
Took Japanese Government and Politics from him. One of the hardest classes I ever took, but also one of the very best. Prof. Christensen is smart, opinionated, and passionate, and while he demands a lot from his students, he makes the class so worth it in return! Avoid him if you're lazy; definitely take from him if you're not. Remarkable guy.
This class has a lot of work. Overall he was a good teacher for the first half of the class but didn't do well the second half when it was focused on statistics. First half of the class was entertaining and good, second half was boring and easier to learn from TAs.
Poli 200 changed my life. Professor Christensen is a tough grader and he tells it like it is. The work load was extremely difficult for me, but all of the paper writing made me a great writer. I honestly didn't think I had it in me, but after a low grade on my first paper, I made a real focus on my writing and saw dramatic improvement.
LOTS of work, but the class is set up so that there is help whenever you need it. Professor Christensen is amazing and hilarious. I ended up switching my major, but I still think this class was worth taking just to improve my writing skills. Do the reading, talk to the TA's, and you'll get a great grade.
Dr. Christensen is awesome. He will make you work to get a good grade, but he is super knowledgeable and very passionate about the subject; he always finds a way to make his lectures entertaining. Would absolutely take a class from him again.
He spends most time of lecture screaming about things. He is funny, but has taught it too many times. He grades very heavy, but curves if necessary.
Professor Christensen knows his subject and loves to teach poli sci 200. The class is hard, but not impossible. Put in the effort, do the papers, and sit in one of the first 4 rows - you'll participate more and will make friends with the students who are doing well. He's a funny guy and makes class as enjoyable as possible. He wants you to do well.
Christensen is a funny guy and very passionate, but the course content is very unorganized. He doesn't give a review sheet or connect the reading to classes or anything that you can review later. He just screams his way through important material that would be much easier to learn if it was structured better.
Prof. Christensen is a really fun lecturer and he is super funny. There are quite a lot of papers during the first half of the course, so get ready to spend hours writing every week. The content itself isn't too difficult until you get to the stats part of the class. He is not amazing at teaching the stats in a way that makes it easy to understand.
Dr. Christensen is one of BYU's finest. He excels in lecture; attending class is entertaining. Don't blow off the major writing assignments; it takes a lot of work to get a good grade. I'm not a poli sci major, but I learned a lot of great transferable skills from Dr. Christensen. He's an amazing guy! I definitely learned to write coherently.
This class is definitely not easy, but Dr. Christensen makes it so enjoyable. Don't miss the lectures; he is hilarious and really good about answering questions. He makes it very easy to get help in the class with all of the office hours available. Do the assignments, do the readings, go to class, and take advantage of the help offered.
This class was so great! Definitely not easy, and takes a lot of time and effort. With an essay due almost every week, immense reading, and a brutal final, it takes a lot out of you. But Brother Christensen makes it so much fun and his lectures are amazing! Take advantage of your TAs and the review sessions. Great class!
I'd recommend another professor, especially for Poli 200. Christensen is energetic, but a little too energetic. Poli 200 is notorious for being difficult, but Christensen makes it significantly harder than it needs to be.
Law class style where you''ll only be graded on midterm, final, and a group project (and participation). He doesn't believe in grades higher than a 92% but he also rounds. This was a very reading heavy class and it's easy to get confused, he emphasizes that the lecture reading is more important, so ask if the textbook is really necessary.
Was not an easy class, but it wasn't as hard as everybody made it seem. Took the class while taking 16 credits and working 15+ hours a week and it didn't kill me. I did not do a single reading the whole semester and still got an A in the class. Show up to every class, lab, and turn in all assignments and you'll get at least a B.
Professor Christensen is awesome! His class was difficult and had a heavy workload, but he is extremely approachable and was always willing to meet outside of class during office hours. He even invited the entire class over to his house for crepes. Would highly recommend.
I had the liberty of taking both Hawkins and Christensen in 200. Take Hawkins. Christensen makes it harder than it needs to be. As far as grading is concerned, Christensen grades harder because he cares about the micro-details of papers (grammar, punctuation, etc.). Hawkins cares more about the Macro-big picture of what you turn in.
International Law textbook is useless, don't bother with it. Everything comes from the case reading packet, and MAKE SURE YOU READ. Discussions will go over your head unless you're listening with intent to participate. He's a bit harsh, so don't take it personally. Very interesting material, he likes you more if you make him laugh
Tough class, but it isn't his fault. Make sure you take a lab that you will not miss. You cannot make up quizzes or hw assignments due in lab. Your TA will make or break your grade. If you end up with a bad TA, switch to another assigned lab if possible or take it another semester. TA really is that important because they grade all your assignments
Professor Christensen is awesome. He is super funny and super intelligent. He and the TAs are very accessible for help with your papers (there's a lot of them), so make sure to take advantage of that.
Brother Christensen was a fun and engaged professor. The course is difficult with a lot of writing, but he pushes students to learn and improve. He is passionate, fun, and good at teaching.
Love Bro Christensen, hate POLI200. That class should be worth 6 credits, because it's twice as much work as a normal class. But Bro Christensen does a great job engaging the class and explaining difficult concepts. Take advantage of his office hours. Ask for specific advice with essays. You'll learn a ton and become a much better writer. Good luck
I don't know how everybody thinks Professor Christensen is so great. If you have the chance to take this class from anybody else, you should do it. Professor Christensen is condescending and rude to students who just want feedback. I went to his office hours twice and never went back because he was so rude. This class is also unnecessarily hard.
Professor Christensen is the professor I wish I had my entire life. He creates an atmosphere of excellence and is extremely clear as to what is required. He acknowledges himself that the class is very hard and lets students know that. You can do well if you plan your time, take solid notes, and TALK WITH YOUR TA's. I got married so I had no time.
Professor Christensen is awesome! Poli 200 is a lot of work (particularly the stats part) but Prof. Christensen and his TAs do a really good job of helping you understand everything. Theres a lot of readings, essays, and quizzes but if you work hard, manage your time well, and go to office hours and the review sessions, youll do fine.
Take the class from Hawkins. POLI 200 with Christensen was miserable. Papers graded intensely in unfair ways that don't make sense. You'll likely get a 75 on an awesome paper just for the sake of Prof C and the TAs wanting their grading to seem like it's actually valuable and that they know better than you. Wish I had more characters to use. Awful.
A lot of work and you'll be thrown in the deep end, but he does his best to keep class entertaining. Be prepared, it's your hardest class this semester.
Hardest class ever. I am inexplicably exhausted. The entire course is paper after paper; I wrote over 100 pages for Poli 200 alone. Dr. Christensen is a great professor. Energetic and charismatic. However, he can come off quite abrasive at times, but he is kind at heart. Beware of the statistics section! Honestly, only take this class if you must.
I dont know why everyone on here thinks professor Christensen is so great. He is very abrasive and cocky. The papers are ridiculously difficult and the grading makes no sense. I spent four hours on one paper and twelve on another and got the same grade. He and his TAs just look for points to take off until they feel satisfied. Do not recommend.
You know how real a class is by how much extra credit one can receive. This class has zero extra credit, and good luck achieving higher than 95 percent on a paper. Professor Christensen isn't for everyone, but he is a great professor. He teaches the course well, and I felt that there was never a class period in which I did not learn anything.
So many things to say... Other tags I feel are fitting: Harder than necessary, Tough Grader, Asking questions You are stupid, find a significant other that is good at stats (cuz you ain't learnin it here), Take from other Pro. at all costs, Get ready to read (if you're one of those students that actually reads), and lastly GET READY TO WRITE
This is seriously the worst class I've ever taken. I'm a good writer, but all writing assignments are graded by a TA that has no qualifications and in my case, she did not agree with my political views and I strongly believe that influenced my grades on the papers. Lectures were mostly irrelevant to the class. You'll spend 10+ hours a week writing.
Ray Christensen is an amazing professor; he's super active and engaging in lectures and will not hesitate to help if you go to office hours. Just know that POLI 200 is a literally a class about writing papers and not politics. He will help you learn to write great papers, but if you hate writing then it would be unwise to take his course.
Awesome professor! He's straight forward and will help you improve your writing a ton. The class is hard, but he does his best to help you. Follow his directions and you'll do fine. Always use the magic sentences he gives in class in your papers.
Good professor
This is the hardest class that I have taken at BYU. Brother Christensen is a great professor. The workload is heavy with a major writing assignment due every week (my total page count for all writing assignments was 96 pages), but my TA gave great feedback. I would recommend taking this class from him over someone else. It is hard but worth it.
I love Brother Christensen! The class is definitely difficult, but everything I learned and worked on was relevant to my preparation for a future career and future study. He has over a hundred students, but he takes the time to learn the name of each student. He is a tough grader, but I feel like the requirements are very clear and fair.
Wow! The work isn't hard, it just takes forever. The only thing that made this class bearable was Professor Christensen. What a fantastic teacher. I would definitely take another one of his classes.
This was the hardest class I have ever taken, but also the one where I learned the most and improved the most as a writer. I spent 20 hours on some assignments. USE THE TAs. They will help you A LOT. If you start writing assignments early and get TA help you will do fine and learn a lot. Lectures were so fun and honestly a highlight of my semester.
This was the hardest and most rewarding class I have ever taken. The tests kick butt, but the lectures are amazing. He will teach you everything you need to know to succeed if you are paying attention. Do not take this class if you are not prepared to put in the work to get something good out of it.
Professor Christensen is the best professor at BYU, hands-down. He gives you everything you need to succeed in this class (go to the weekly reviews!) and is truly rooting for you to do well. He is hilarious and does everything he can to make lectures bearable (even the stats portion). I am actively trying to take more classes from him, so take him!
Professor Christensen is wildly talented, funny, and personable. His class is also remarkably difficult and time consuming. I spent upwards of 15 hours a week doing homework for a 4 credit class. You will learn SO much and have a great time. The TAs are very helpful, and you know exactly what is expected of you. DON'T expect easy As!! It's hard!!
POLI 200 is a beast of a class that taxed my sanity, but that wasn't Prof. Christensen's fault. He's a great lecturer who makes class fun. The material isn't the most engaging (writing, correlations, and statistics), but you'll look forward to the lectures because Prof. Christensen has so many amazing stories to illustrate the concepts.
