thinks he is better than everyone b/c of his phd
Good man. Very opiniated. Very interesting.
Had him for intro soc. Pretty easy GPA boost. Nice guy, interesting lectures.
Lectures are very interesting. Keeps your attention locked. Tests are super easy
Very easy going, AWESOME PROF
Good way to boost your GPA, but his attitude sucks. He is NOT approachable!!!!!!
Friendly Guy, understands people, easy going
great lectures, interactive, little too full of himself though
Foui is the worst prof I have ever seen! He only presents his idea of an argumen
really interesting lectures!! his tests are not at all easy though.
5 multiple-choice tests, noncumalative, throughout the year, each worth 20%.
lots of notes, but a good prof.
good prof
reminds you everyday he has a phd.

Comes across as arrogant. Be prepared to listen, and write. No written notes.
Feels only his opinion is right, but he means well & his class isn't very hard
He's pretty good... no overhead notes but good lectures
stay away! impossible tests! only thinks of himself doesnt care about studnets!
very interesting lectures but the multiple choice tests are brutal
great lectures + hard tests...
Knows what he's talking about; the guy needs a new wardrobe
loves to talk about sex, loves himself, doesn't like to be challenged, hard tests
interesting course, good teacher. He likes what he teaches. Hard to take notes from what he says though.

interesting lectures, but tests are hard
study guide very helpful, tests are hard, a little arrogant, there are better, lectures are unclear
Really knows what he's talking about, test aren't that hard if you study the text, have an 83 from going to class once every 2 weeks or so.
if you want to learn something, go to the lectures; if you want to get an A, just read the study guide on the days before tests.
If I can pass this course without even reading the textbook, anyone should! The guy likes what he's talking about, making it easier to learn. I agree though, he does need a new wardrobe. Don't argue with him though, you could be doing so for a while.
tough tests...asks details from textbook which have no relevance to lectures! STAY AWAY!!! trust me!
Great professor. Gave very interesting lectures.
Communist hippie, but I admire his tenacity. Arrogant is true, and he'd rather rampage than answer questions and discuss. Still, very intelligent, and his tests are fair, although you'll really have to work for that A.
Just A Wicked Teacher You Won'y Be Let Down. Mad Props TO Dr Ray. Big Up!!
Likes talking about himself, and not willing to listen to you. Tests make you work, but he gives you the material. He says one thing and then does another. And don't ever come to him if you were ill and want an extension or a retest-even with a Dr's note.
sometimes he would ramble but he was overall an excellent teacher and he was very helpful when i went to his office.
TErrible proff stay away, I do not understand his marking, gives too much work for the course, don't take this course if you really don't need it, IT'S NOT EASY if you're looking for an easy class and picked intro to Univ, you're going the wrong direction
Dr. Ray's class was fun even when the classroom was pretty hot. He lectures at a good, understandable pace and will happily repeat concepts if necessary. The multiple choice tests do have some strange questions sometimes, but aren't too bad if you study.
I really enjoyed his class, I found him to be a good prof. I wish I had more classes with him, I'm going to be watching for classes he teaches next year.
Couldn't stand this guy and I was completely sick of hearing about when he was 17! Absolutely boring. I was registered in two of his classes and had to drop one because I couldn't handle this guy three days a week, never mind 5!!! Awful!
Dr. Ray's Intro class helped me to decide to major in Sociology. He is an excellent prof and he explains things well. He made me look forward to going to class, and being that it was at 8:30am, I consider that a major accomplishment.
A very brilliant man who makes you think twice about things you take for granted. Wouldn't want to know him personally though.

Very definitely left-wing, but keeps class entertaining. Tests were ambiguous though
Repeats himself alot and tends to say the same thing over and over. It's almost like he makes you feel guilty for following the ways of society. You can learn most of the course on your own.
very intresting proff. If your intrested you'll be able to study without sleeping..
Seems very passionate about what he teaches, very captivating, but his tests are not very easy...Be careful with this one...
Very energetic and passionate about his work. Definitely not a boring prof. Communicated very clearly and effectively. Tests are fair, if you studied you won't have a problem. He is very liberal minded and you may leave a communist!
Easy to take notes from but tests are extremely hard
he's an excellent prof!
foui is a really amazing prof. his lectures provoke thought and very interesting debates. he also provides many real life examples and whatnot to show how sociology is actually used in the world which i find is sometimes very hard to gain from reading.
Total hippie, and I only had him for a 2 weeks when my prof was one personal leave, but he was super. Nice, friendly and a little crazy. Test was confusing though.
great lectures...tests were a bit confusing, but thoroughly enjoyed taking the class with him and would recommend him
good lectures, fairly average difficulty tests , an above average overall prof
I dropped his class after the first day.
awesome classes and examples, my favorite prof, tests are crazy easy if you just read the textbook
Very good prof. Good examples. He says things so bluntly that its hard not to pay attention and be interested.
He is a very smart teacher which is very easy to listen to. Gives many examples to get his point across and for us to understand.
Find his tests on the harder side, his examples are great but some lack validity (crack agrument)
total hippie, very interesting class discusions, nails you with questions during your presentation, doesn't care if he embarasses you, tests a little on the hard side, and markes essays very hard!!!
I think this guy might be a communist.
He is an excellent teacher. He really gets your mind going during class and often brings up controversial issues. I find on tests he'll pick out ANYTHING from the chapters he assigns you (including case studies) but if you do your reading, you'll be fine.
Really interesting. Gives really good examples and keeps your interest. Tests are pretty hard but if you know the text book then they're easy. Overall good teacher.
This guy makes you think about things you would never think about on a daily basis and gets you aware of what is REALLY out there. I love his class I think his way of teaching is phenomenal and that the tests are hard but their worth it!
Ahhh, this is my second time taking the course and Im still failing which is strange...This proff is awesome. He really makes you think and his lecture style surprizingly makes it easy to take notes. Very good proff, very hard exams (very!!), but I recommend him none the less.
clever...funny.
very dynamic teaching style. Notes didn't always pertain to course material, however classes were interactive and fun.
He is not to bad as an insructor, but seems to be a communist, which is not a problem by itself, but he tries to pushed his political agenda and ideas down your throat using his superiour over you position
He's not friendly at all, and his test was very hard, avoid this prof!! take Linda Wood instead him
This class was super interesting, but it involved a lot of time and studying. Tests were hard - he would include absolutely ANYTHING from the text, regardless of whether it was mentioned during lecture. He was easy to listen to, and availabe to help out his students.
He tells you up front - read the text and attend lectures because some of the tests will include stuff from the text not covered in the lectures and stuff from the lectures not covered in the text. That's fair enough, but a tip would be to study all those 'sidebar' statistics in the text a little closer as they always are on test.
Interesting prof and clear notes...however he is definately a marxist/communist and tries to force that way of thinking on the class, while trying to disprove the whole "capitalist system"
He explained things well, and used good examples and comparisons. It is true that personal politics did enter the teaching a little bit, but I've heard that the majority of Sociology books and professors have a socialist slant, so it wasn't such a big deal for me. He was willing to talk to people after class.
Great speaker, really keeps you interested for the entire class. Tests are almost entirely from text book so READ IT! He knows his stuff and brings a lot of interesting perspectives to the classroom. If you really want to learn, take his class, if you want a free ride, don't.
AMAZING, AMAZING PROFS...MAKES U REALLY THINK ABOUT THE WORLD U LIVE IN AND QUESTION EVERYTING IN LIFE THAT U NORMALLY TAKE FOR GRANTED....REALLY OPENED UP MY EYEZ AND MIND....GREAT PROF.

Awesome teacher!
he is so interesting and I enjoy every class. Great professor
this guy is really interesting and easy to listen to, however his tests are impossible! there is just alot of reading to do in the texts. so, basically, he is really interesting but i guess the tests wont be too hard if you make sure to read the textbook carefully and thoroughly. definately not a slacker class, but definately worth it!
Great prof, although don't stress out if you miss some of the notes in class! Tests are almost entirely out of the textbook. The class is super-interesting, he brings up alot of good points in his arguements...seriously though, the tests are kind of easy if you've read the textbook over multiple times.
ok prof..basically just talks for the entire class though and expects you to write down EVERYTHING he says.
very interesting topics. easy to listen to. notes aren't very important. read everything in the textbook, everything! even the little words under the pictures! and go to the website in the book and take the sample tests. sometimes he appears a tad pompous, in my opinion. extremely interesting class though.

Awesome prof... tests are killer but his lectures are amazing... easy to take notes off of and hes SUPER interesting, classes are always interesting!
Very interesting class he is very clear and direct. first few tests were hard relies heavily on the text book for test material.
I got an A in the class and went to a total of 8 classes the entire year (the five tests included) From the three lectures I attended, he seemed like a very interesting and engaging lecturer If you know your textbook readings you will do well regardless of your attendance. Tests aren't easy, but easy enough for an A without going. Recommended.
We'll I did'nt get an A and I studied all the time for this class. Tests are very difficult! He is very anti-capitalist and very pro-socialist. It is hard to make to have class discussion with him with his ethnocentric views, but he is a nice guy.
Nice guy and means well.Good at teaching Socialism/Marxism,but his Marxist bias, which is much the same as the rest of the Social Science heads of department,to be blunt, does not promote academic freedom. This Marxist monopoly is absurd.A Marxist utopian paradise will never exist, our inborn nature is not just social conditioning as Marxism suggests
He's just ok. His tests are harder then they really need to be, but not hard enough to really complain. He's a pretty funny guy, as long as you don't take everything he says too serious. Even if you don't like him after a few classes, I would still stay in the class, and just read the text book, as 95% of the test quetsions come from the text.
Dr. Ray keeps the attention of the students very well and is easy to listen too. This course, however, is quite a difficult course so the student does need the professor's time to explain some of the concepts.
he was such an amazing prof. I looked forward to his classes as they were extremely interesting. I feel that i now know much more on the subject and am hoping i can emroll in another class of his down the road
Dr. Ray is a great guy!! His lectures are very interesting, & he stays on topic. His tests are tricky. He likes class discussions.
Great professor, vibrant class discussions. Tests are tricky, but so is University... get used to it.
Decent enough to pay attention to, but spends an unacceptable amount of time pushing his socialist and pro-marxist commie views... There are whole classes where he spends 15-20 minutes on theory, and the rest of the class pushing politics..That would be fine if his arguments held water in anyones mind other than first year students, or if he allowe
He was one of the best teachers i have had, he explains things so well and gives examples to everything he talks about... he lets you voice your own oppinion in class, we have class descussions, it also depends wether or not you like psych. or soc. i like soc. a lot better because it relates more to the wolrd and everyday life, but he's great!!!
Lectures are very interesting. Keeps you interested. I was not interested in Soc at all before taking this class. Took it as a requirement but it's the only one I attend on a regular basis. Would take more classes with Foui.
Very egocentric. Rampant Marxist. Lectures do not correspond with test material even in the slightest. This guy sits in bed at night searching for the one fact you will never remember to put on the test. Awful prof. He should stick to grad studies because his grad students are all he cares about anyway. If you are in intro soc, he doesn't care abou
The best professor i've ever had by far. I have never encountered somebody who gives such applicable examples. The lectures are very engaging and the class discussions we have are super helpful. The tests aren't easy... but if you study the textbook and take good notes, you're guaranteed a B at the very least. I would highly recommend this guy.
interesting lectures, good teaching style although he relies heavily on the text as far as exam material. If you read the text you can get away with missing half of his classes & still end up with an A.
Excellent prof! I would highly reccomend him to anyone that asked. Very engaging lecture style, and relates text and lectures well. Tests are difficult, but if you attend class and read the text you'll do just fine.
He is one of the best professors I have encounter so far....he's down-to-earth unlike quite a few of these profs
This is the best prof I've ever had in 4 years of University. He makes you want to be a better student and nothing is too much trouble. He is approachable in the halls and his door is always open. Lectures make you look forward to class, tests are very tricky, read your notes and text carefully!
Dr. Foui was an AMAZING prof, I'd take the class again! Though the class was harder than my friends Socio class, worth every bit. Always excited to go to class, not my style. I'd often go to class feeling great, and leave a bit nauseous, lol, in a good way. Opened my eyes. Good thesis in library if you can handle typos.
HORRIBLE!! TEST ARE UNNECESSARILY HARD! DO NOT TAKE RAYMOND FOUI!
Horrible. Do not take this class. I'm the only one of the people around me that passed with a D. Take a different Proff!
Amazing professor. He has a way of making his class want to work hard and impress him. The rewards are worth it!! You will learn a lot through his humor and easy going teaching method.
TESTS were so ridiculous...sociology tests shouldn't be made so hard. Ok PROF, but tests are deadly.... reading the text book and studying isn't enough....
Very good prof, easy to talk to, and shows you all the sides of the coin. Loved his class, and as long as you read your text book and participate in all lectures, you'll do fine. Just know the fundamentals because he elaborates on the basics
Interesting prof, he can keep your attention but the tests are killer. Stupid hard, tricky wording and yes he does remind you that he has his PHD a lot.
He is a powerfreak and his Intro University course is a useless joke. A diffcult joke though. Would not recommend him to anybody, ever.
His lectures are very interesting. However, tests were ridiculously hard, and this is coming from a student with an honours degree who must take a social science elective for my second degree. I would not recommend this taking this class with him to anyone who is trying to get into a faculty, take it if you want an interesting class.
just pay attention and do not piss him off, you'll get an A
Nice guy, interesting subject, hard tests. READ THE TEXTBOOK and attend lectures. And when you do go to class, don't show up late, leave early or go to the bathroom because he'll get really angry at and let everyone in the room know it. Overall an awesome prof - take him if you can!
Very good prof and lectures are very interesting. Tests however are SUPER hard. Dont take this class unless you plan on studying very very hard. Hardest tests that i have ever taken. Good thing is, there are no assignments, so if you're good with test taking, this is the class for you.
lectures are for the most part really interesting, he's really passionate about what he's teaching, which makes learning pretty easy. you MUST read the textbook, if you aren't going to, you might as well drop the course now, because you will fail. i would recommend him, although tests are somewhat hard, they really aren't if you do the readings
Great prof, very interesting for the most part, and passionate about what he does. Tests were easy so long as you attend class and supplement it with reading all the assigned readings. Many questions were pulled directly from the text book. Overall, good prof.
Dr. Foui did a great job teaching this course. Intro to University definitely isn't the most exciting subject, but his lectures were interesting and you actually learned something from him. Be warned though, this class isn't the slack course that evetybody thinks; there's actually a fair bit of work involved.
Really interesting, his lectures facilitated note taking if you choose to do so. Tests were fairly difficult but are doable. I found that most of the test pertained to the textbook and not the lecture, but that the lecture reinforces the info. I definetely recommend Dr. Foui, it is a very enjoyable class to go to.
He is the worst professor I have ever had in my university career! He does not supply notes just lectures in front of class. DO NOT take this class from him if you want a good mark!
Dr. Ray is really awesome, his lectures are engaging and his stories are funny and interesting. He really pushes the Marxism down your throat, so you might leave a communist! Hes very friendly, but if you talk after class, you may be there for a while, loves to talk! Hard tests, but study the text and you'll do fine. Excellent speaker.
A really intersting professor who will keep you captivated in class. You need to take your own notes while he talks, but that's where the problem is. The tests are extremely hard, and there is usually nothing from the notes on them, its all from the textbook. I'd avoid this class. I was hoping for an A+, and came away with a B+.
Great Lectures, Wont help you on the tests though. Read the Textbook. I Learned a lot. Tests are really hard. I would recommend not writing notes unless you find it helps you to remember. I also thought I was going to come out with an A and came out with a B.
If you are the religious type, or have a distaste for communism, I suggest you avoid this class. Tricked into this class by my sister, I regret getting up to go. While he is very into his speaking, I don't like the crap comming out of his mouth.
Some of Dr. Ray's lectures are very interesting, and some are absolutely repulsive. I agree with his views about Marxism and religion, however for many things, Dr. Ray forces potentially bogus information on you. He seems arrogant and you can't argue with him, so don't even try. Read your textbook thoroughly. His tests are really tricky.
Dictates all of his notes which some may not like, but it keeps you focused on the lecture. Answers all questions in class, sometimes with a bit of synicysm. Tests are comprised of knowledge from the textbook mostly, with his lectures adding on to the basic ideas presented in the textbook. Read the text, come to class and guaranteed you have an A.
His style keeps you listening and makes class interesting but he indirectly is trying to start a marxist revolution. If you bring up a counter argument in class he wont even acknowledge you.
Great prof, knows his stuff. He teaches the material as if it were true, and this turns some students (those not intelligent enough to realize he is merely stating theories in the creators point of view) off. Dictates his notes in class. Most of the test is on material in the text. He even goes over outline of the test. Hard work will acheive an A.
Good speaker but hard tests. I never thought I would enjoy going to class. Gonna miss him when Im done
Really nice prof. Lectures can be boring and very interesting, depending on what topic you have the most interest in. Had to write 2 13 page group papers but they werent too difficult (pick good group members) Tests are difficult but if you know HOW to use the material discussed, not just definitions you`ll do fine.
worst teacher ive ever had for marking and staying on topic
Spoke clearly and kept it interesting. Over all a good class. Down side was having to write two group essays, proper instruction was not given and feedback was not helpful at all.
He needs a reality check, as though he thinks he is god or something because he has a ph.d other than that, very unapproachable and a real stickler for tardiness, i mean c'mon situations occur that just are unpreventable. i still liked him though because he keeps us on our toes and has good lectures, he can stand to open the floor once in awhile th
He was really interesting to listen to (some dry lectures) picked on people in class which was funny. Tests were really hard, need to study cover to cover
No suprises on tests if you attend class and do the textbook reading. He is interesting and charismatic, tries to make the bland parts somewhat exciting. Lots of textbook reading, so it is time and energy intensive.
Very good lecturer, keeps you interested. I actually enjoyed going to class, dare I say, looked forward to it. His tests are VERY hard, but if you study the text, you'll do fine. 60 multiple choice questions, I usually got 44-52 questions right. You can afford to crap up on only one test, as he gives you 5 tests. Very nice guy, very helpful!
Arrogant fool. So jaded, however it's not all his fault, with university arts departments churning out ignorant idealists with no real skills...Don't let him get to you with his communist ideas, keep your head on, don't bother arguing and you'll do just fine. Want to lose your faith in humanity? Take sociology with DR (yes, this clown has a pHd)F!
Awesome lectures!!! Foui is really clear and interesting, highly recommended. One of the few lectures I enjoy. He is bold and straight forward, often speaking in terms of the people you are studying as if he had THEIR views, don't mistake this with him being arrogant or anything like that, you have to have an open mind!
I took Family DE. Unit tests were fair but make sure you expand on your essay questions for full marks. Even though it's open book, I suggest studying the material as if it was not because it will reflect in your grade. Final exam closed book, but it was fair, know the basic themes and ideas. Possible questions come from learning objectives
Really hard tests, you need to study hardcore to do good. Most of the stuff that is on the tests is out of the textbook. intetesting lectures even if you don't have to go to all of them.
I was not interested in Soc before this class but I am now! Test are hard but are multiple choice, reading the text book is a must! Great lectures, actually enjoyed going to the class, there are always stories that are very helpful. He encourages class participation. I whould take another class with Foui in a second!
Great Prof. He is very out there when he teaches, but people must remember that what he teaches doesn't always reflect the view of, well his views. He is just teaching what sociology is, where it comes from and theories.. make sure to study the txt, and not just memorize it, really understand it..and go to tutor sessions if avial.
Looking back, I know now exactly what this man was teaching, and, how his personal agenda biased and made illegitimate his lecture. He has an extreme marxist bias. So much, that he will ignore all reality that contradicts his orthodoxy. A faithful priest of leftist bigotry, he is not fit to teach, in any sphere that encourages intellectual honesty.
Interesting prof, but exams were way to hard. I've never done so bad in a course!
AMAZING PROF, he is 100% my favourite. yes his tests are hard, but if you study and are active in class they aren't a problem at all. I was always excited to go to class, and would always love to participate because he really gets the class involved. I would recommend him to anyone wanting to take a sociology class!
your awesome
Decent Prof, tests are extremely hard, take a different prof if you can, they let you drop a test and don't make you do a stupid partner article review
This is probably the best prof i've ever had!! if you go to class and pay attention his tests are perfectly understandable. He gives many explanations for everything and makes sure you understand everything before each test. He is amazing!
Great Prof, tests are straight forward if you go to class and read the textbook. Wants everyone to do well and makes an effort to help you if you need it. I'd really recommend his class, you learn a lot.
Great prof, lectures are very interesting, my favourite class because of him! The tests aren't easy but if you study and reference to your textbook you'll be fine!
Online class, wish I never took it. Tests were impossible even with countless hours of studying and were open book (online). Didn't learn anything, was pretty much a book review class.
The professor is decent, But the exams are extremely hard, I highly recommend going finding a diferent sociology class, because this one requires a article review with a partner....
Intimidating. Expensive text book because it's custom-made for his curriculum, and requires online code to access article for book review. Sucks that you have to work on with partner and get same grade. Interesting lectures, but DON'T BE TARDY (snippy comments will follow)! Helpful and understanding when I had a family emergency.
Made the lectures interesting to attend with the interesting stories he would share. Only negative was the article review that must be done with a partner.
Hardest second year class I have ever taken.. Multiple choice for tests were impossible... Asking the tiniest of detail
Worst prof ever for teaching online! Had no feedback on tests and had NO attempt of getting back to students on how to prepare for the final! Never again! This was supposed to be an easy class, but turned out to be a GPA DROPPER! Smh!
Very interesting and engaging lectures. The tests were hard but if you go to class and keep up with the readings: easy A.
Dr. Ray is rad! I found his class intellectually stimulating, and his teaching style challenging, but effective. Usually the discontent are those who do poorly; although his test are tricky, if you attend you and put effort into your class, you should do well.
Supposed to be an easy a but the class turned out to be difficult because the Prof insisted on asking the tiniest of details I'm surprised he never asked what page an information was on in the text book.
Supposed to be an easy A but the class turned out to be difficult but the class turned out annoying. You literarily have to listen to every word he says in class cuz he can decide to as the worst questions. Class was undeniable but exams were too difficult
This class & prof was ridiculous. His tests are very hard, he will ask the most detailed & unimportant of questions. Make sure you attend every single class, he doesn't post his notes so it sucks when he asks questions on the test on something he said once, but you will not find in the textbook. And he makes you write an essay with a partner.
The material in the class isn't hard, but Dr.Ray doesn't give you a guideline of what you really should know so you're stuck reading the entire text and deciding what you think is relevant - Which SHOULD be theories and arguments, but tests you on details that didn't seem important. You can get a good grade if you really try, but he is no help.
Great Prof. Although his multiple choice exams were hard I found that you needed to attend class all the time in order to pass this class. Awesome teacher down to earth. He is very real. This would be one of the most exciting class I have ever attended. This class makes you think about things we take for granted. Thanks Foui!
One of the best profs that I have had. If your looking for an easy A you shouldn't be taking his class. I found Foui to be very passionate in his speaking and lectures and would most definitely take another class with him. Maybe not the easiest prof to get a grade from but you will walk out with a lot of knowledge.
My grade was based on 4 multiple choice tests that were extremely difficult and tricky. Didn't use anything online, didn't have slides. Just talked and you have to hope you wrote down everything relevant. Got a C+ so I'm taking it again and just wish I had a different professor the first time.
I love the subject and content of the course but this prof pretty much sets you up for failure, then rubs it in your face. His guidelines are non existent, which makes it that much more ridiculous when he criticizes for not reaching a word count that was not assigned. I would not recommend this prof, he's unhelpful and quite frankly, rude.
Lectures are very easy to follow and interesting. Doesn't ask much from you. Just don't miss the classes often and know what you have to study. To be honest he's one of the professors I've learned a lot from.
Makes the class lively with his teaching style. Actually liked this class. However, he talks to you like you are not quite intelligent.
Has literally discouraged me from Sociology. Avoid if you care about making the world better Worst online class I have ever taken at the U of M. I have a good GPA and study habits, writing skills - I'm a strong student and know what it takes to get A's or higher. His commentary said I should have done many things I clearly did.
Possibly one of the worst classes I have taken. The reading material was confusing and beyond the level of many second year sociology students. He assigns 7 page essays 48 hours before they are due, and over weekends. Takes a while to respond to student questions on the class forum, if he chooses to respond at all.
Worst class I have ever took online. He was not helpful. There wasn't really a CLEAR outline so you had to study the entire text. AVOID THIS PROF. He literally picks out the tiniest details in the text.
Absolute worst classs I ever took. He was so vague with the questions and then marked really hard. I also found him rude when I emailed him. I would not recommend this class to anyone.
The first term test was the worst I've written in many years. I dropped the course immediately after. I had to guess on most of the questions and I never have to do that. Very obscure questions that went into more detail than the textbook did, it was very unfair. Avoid this class!
This is the 2nd class i have taken with Dr Foui. He gives a lot of great feedback and his lecture notes help connect textbook to material. But it is hard to know what all to study. He does give example/practice quizzes which do help a bit. Overall I would take his courses again.
Worst professor I've ever had, hands down. I am taking two courses with him and when I emailed him about 2330 he gave me feedback on my work from 2460 and then asked how I got information about 2330. Also spells my name wrong in emails when it is right in front of him... he is rude, vague, and unhelpful. Do NOT recommend.
Relied on the textbook for the most part of this class. The exams are 50% text and 50% lecture. His exams are tricky, but you can tell he really cares for his students. The paper is an easy 5 page review. Can really give a good lecture. He encourages class discussion to keep the class awake which is great for a class like this.
I took this course online and there was a lot of information covered. He gave the occasionally notes for chapters, but not for every chapter. There was 3 module tests and a final. he marks long answer easy, study lecture notes, and readings. They took me roughly 8 hours of prep work for each test. STUDY everything for the final, EVERYTHING
Raymond was one of the toughest graders I have ever had. I needed this class to fulfill my Sociology minor and I regretted it right when I read the syllabus. The class consists of three 8-10 page essays and one exam. I did not learn anything from this class. Do not recommend.
Took online during the summer and found that course content was difficult but that wasnt so much the profs fault. Graded by 2 25% 12 page essays and 1 50% essay final and his grading style is very fair with clear feedback, if you work hard you will get the grade you deserve. Prof is doing a great job at trying to explain the tough course material.
Foui was the most ridiculous profs i ever had. Gives you three days to write a 10 page paper, you have to do this twice in the semester, and his material is not updated and did not give us access to anyone he had referenced in his commentary and then he tests you on it and then docks marks because you didnt reference someone he brougt up once.
Trust me do not take this course especially with Raymond Foui!! He will not help you in any way (he lives in BC-time zone diff.), his emails are unclear, you have to read and teach everything on your own, he doesn't have a rubric and expects you to know what he wants in the essays.. 2 tests (each 25%) and final (50%) all essays.
I found the material of the course to be incredibly interesting and he did a great job of explaining it in his course notes. This was the most difficult writing course I have taken but it was the most rewarding to finish. Consisted of two 10 page papers worth 25% each and one 12 page final paper thats worth 50%.
I was intimidated by the course when I first saw the syllabus but the material is so interesting and this course REALLY taught me how to write a university-level paper. I often find myself referring back to the papers that I wrote in this class for guidance in other courses. This course is hard work but is incredibly rewarding to finish.
Run! Absolutely run. I am usually an A+ student and he gave me a 50% on a paper I did that I worked so hard on! 34% of students in our class got 50-55 on this paper as well. He gives you absolutely no rubric and expects you to know what he wants.
Despite the course material being very interesting, Dr. Foui is a VERY tough grader. I like to think of essay writing as a strong suit of mine, however, I was definitely humbled in this course which is not necessarily a bad thing. Definitely make sure that you know the material and finish the readings. Dr. Foui is very understanding and kind.
Foui was ok. Firstly, email and ask questions, IT HELPS ALOT! Also make sure to incorporate the course material enough in ur essays in an in-depth way- DONT USE OUTSIDE SOURCES! Prof doesn't have a grading rubric for the students to use, and his feedback doesn't always make sense. Overrall a super challenging but REWARDING course. He's also v nice.
This is my 3rd year of undergrad, and the worst course I've taken by far. The whole of your grade is composed of three papers, 30%, 20% and 50% respectively. The papers need to be 9 pages min., and you have three days to write them from when you receive the prompt. The prompts are specific and he grades with a heavy bias to his opinion. Stay away!
Dr. Ray is not for faint of heart. This is a 2nd year University class, Dr. treats as such, not Grade 6, not here to hand-hold, if we are to succeed. I worked very hard on 3 papers. Unfortunately, my own fault, a B+ final mark, should have been A+. I did not place appropriate effort in Final Test Paper. Thank you Dr. Ray. EF
Foui's class is a real challenge, but also incredibly rewarding. The essay prompts are specific and can be tough to crack, but engaging with the course material deeply pays off. unstuckstudy was a lifesaver for my essay prep.
I'm a 3rd year undergrad student. This is by far the worst class I've ever taken. Materials are presented exclusively by readings that are full of jargon. No clear grading criteria. He assigned a minimum 7 page paper to be written over Thanksgiving weekend. If you are looking to get rid of your passion for sociology, this class is perfect for you!
Very harsh marker and wants very specific criteria for essays without a grading rubric. His feedback made it seem as though he skimmed through my essay and just gave random and poor feedback, not specific about anything. I voluntarily withdrew from this course as it felt very discouraging and even changed my degree minor from sociology altogether.
This is a soc course with a 54 yr old textbook and some outdated ideas. You need to email the prof cause his instructions aren't always the most specific but he has a tendency to reply passive aggressively and sometimes miss the point of specific emails. Honestly although the grading is tough it's the outdated material that made me rate him so low.
unless you have no other classes and nothing but time to write 3 12-page essays for 25% and 50% of your entire grade respectively, then do not take this class. the prof is incredibly harsh in his marking and may not even read the entirety of your paper based on some of the rude and ignorant comments he'll make. his lecture notes are also a disaster
If you like spending time with your family over thanksgiving don't take this class, 3 papers worth 25% and 50% you get 48 hours to write 10-14 pages, the first over the holiday weekend. No rubric, little explanation for assignments yet graded very harshly. If you email him to ask about the assignments he seems annoyed and gives no future details.
Marks harsh and all based on three 10ish page papers that have to be written in 96 hours over a weekend. The textbook is 54 years old and both the text and professor sometimes rely on outdated beliefs and statistics. You have to write that you agree with his beliefs or you will not do well. Got low 70 when disagreeing to 90+ when agreeing with him.
