Very great teacher. He's organized and explains everything to a tee!Offers plenty of time for asking questions and will clarify anything. Is always offering after class help to students. Also does practice warm-up quiz's before tests. GREAT TEACHER
This instructer sometimes rushes through the lesson's and I also hated his grading policy
Do you want an instructor who cares and will take extra time with you? Look no further! This is your man. He has helped me overcome some serious fears about math. Do I love math? NO! But I do enjoy it to a certain degree now. MR. FUNK rules!
I believe one of the best teachers at the school. So easy going and always willing to help. Starts each class with going over any homework question. Sometimes rushes, but the next period he'll go over it. Great way of explaining new theories.
I suck at math but Mr. Funk is a great teacher. In fact, the best teacher I've had for math...EVER
He passes out his own notes in which he does maybe 12 problems out of each section step by step. His notes are better than any math book i ever read. Take him and dont buy the text. No memorizing formulas, HW, or attendance in the 285 class.
Best math teacher I have ever had. Excellent notes. More than fair with points and grading. Easy going attitude- very cool
Don't expect to pass unless you are as in love with Math as he is. Helpful, yes. But if you don't like Math BEWARE!
The best math teacher I have ever had. Very Patient and Helpful. Explains everything until EVERYONE gets it! No suprises and gives alot of good notes already prepared. Quizes aprox. once a week and tests are very straight forward. Highly recommended!
Mr. Funk is a very good instructor I recomend him to anyone. It is hard work but he appreciates effort.
Mr. Funk is a sweetheart of a teacher who helps build confidence.

Very patient teacher. He loves to help, you just have to ask. How many people love his class? I know...lets do a graph!! It's disturbing how much he loves doing math, particularly graphs.
Mr. Funk is a great teacher. You can tell he really LOVES math. He is helpful and patient, and overly fair on grading by showing appreciation to students who just try. There's a lot of homework, but only a few tests/quizzes throughout semester.
Great teacher. He provides notes for each chapter and works out homework problems in these notes. He is very clear and a very good teacher. He is always available to help students either via email or office hours. He grades very fair.
Just do YOURSELF a favor and take funk! Best Math teacher of all frikin time. I HATE math and he made it so easy to comprehend and really values effort and recognizes it in tests. Wish I had him from day one. Thanks Funk
Math285 summer04.Hands out his own notes in which he explains concepts and does 5-10 even problems from every section. In clas he spends about 10 mins on theory and the rest of the class is doing ex's.Do HW and will get an A.A must take excellent teacher!
Very easy... as long as u do the hw and check it during class.
Great instructor who really cares if his students learn! Uses TI-83 in class using homework problems so that you can learn how to use the calculator effectively. Hands out 5-6 pages of notes with examples of homework problems which are helpful.
EXTREMELY RUDE AND CONDESENDING!
I agree, he is kind of rude and curt with select students, but overall he really just wants students to do well.
He is a easy grader on exams, do the hw and you'll pass!
Beware that Funk is an @ss! He is rude and he goes too in depth with the math. Yeah there aren't a lot of tests, and he never marks anything wrong, but his tests are fairly hard and the hw doesnt help for the test. He doesnt even give you a study guide to match his tests they are someone elses.
Great teacher. He is extremely generous on his tests. If you had the right thought process but the wrong answer he'll still give you credit. Just do the work and you'll be fine
he is one of the best teachers 've ever had. He's not rude at all. HE really wants people to understand the material and will explain it to you until you understand. he also treats you like an adult, good for all the kiddies.
Awesome math teacher. Extremely clear and precise. Explains material until its understood. Generous grader. Available out of class. Lots of material but he covers it with ease and better than anyone in the business. If you want to learn mathematics then Funk's your man, if he can't do it no one can!
Mr.Funk is a great teacher. He understands that everyone makes mistakes and has weaknesses when it comes to math. He explains everything clearly and thouroughly so you grasp the concepts. He may make smart mouth comments every once in a while but when it comes to math he's the best teacher there is!
Excellent teacher. Tests are straight forward, homework graded on completeness, and great at explaining the material. One of the best math teachers at Grossmont/Cuyamaca.
Had it not been for Mr. Funk, I never would have passed or understood caculus. Teaching it from a business perspective is very helpful. He has the most important quality a teacher can have: he genuinely cares that people learn. I would recommend him to anyone.
One of the best math teachers you will ever have. Cares for his students, his tests are fair and he does a great job explaining. Laid back and fair grader, overall cool guy.
He is a great instructor and very helpful. Class is hard and examples are not all that clear but takes the time to explain what you don't understand.
Since this is his first 284 class, he is having a hard time to remember what he learned, but he is trying his best. Responsible person.
I hated and could not understand math before I took his class, after the class I am a better student thanks to him.
Great teacher! He's awesome. Gives a ton of hw but it's all necessary b/c there's so much to learn. Goes over all ?s the next day before the lecture. Very understanding & extremely helpful. Awesome guy & likes jokes a lot. It's fun to go off on tangents but only for a min; he's quite focused. He really cares & does what he can to help. NOT BORING!!
Pretty tough, but this teacher is committed to the students. Don't be afraid to seek help if you need it. A fun teacher who will happily help you pass the class if you put in the effort.
Great teacher, makes class a lot of fun! Tests are a little confusing b/c they aren't expressed exactly like the book. Overall, a very awesome teacher! Highly recommend!
Mr. Funk is an awesome teacher, I've taken several math classes in high school and never could understand the way those teachers taught, you know what I mean? Mr. Funk has a great teaching style and helps you out completely when you need it. I took his class over the summer and it was never a drag to come to class.
Funk's a great teacher, always willing to help you out when you need it.
Mr. Funk is a sweetheart and really interested in his students as well as what they take from the class. He remembered my name after the second day as well as most of the classes. He is a wonderfull teacher, and appriciates attendance and homework. He won't just mark you wrong on a test, he'll see if you tried. He's awesome, take him..
very helpful! does well on explaining difficult subjects and makes the greatest effort to have students completely understand the lessons. unfortunately, students take this to their advantage and consistently ask redundant and obnoxious questions that a 10th grader could solve. but who cares about them.. he's a great teacher!
awesome, awesome teacher. i wish i could take all my math classes with him. he's pretty clear, uses good examples and has a killer smile. ladies- take a seat in the front.
cool teacher very clear
he's hot
I believe all the previous post can be a bit manipulative and deceiving of what 280 course can be.He is OK at teaching this stuff.. maybe its just me but I dont get what he is saying 90% of the time and I thoroughly understand cal 1(math 180).I think he OVER tries to make the student understand the concept/technique that it confuses us(or just me?)
hes a nice guy but a pretty bad teacher. resentful when you want help out of class, doesnt really know how to explain things. doesnt put the same work in the students do. i liked him as a person but i wish there were better options in the math department for this class and others like it
I agree with the previous two posts thoroughly. I'm an A student who is struggling to learn the material on my own because that is what it takes to get a good grade on his difficult exams. I swear he couldn't pass them, and he wastes so much classtime doing one or two examples (and often incorrectly or he struggles through them.) nice guy though.
WHAT? I absolutely loath math and have no skill even when it comes to adding and I passed his class with a high B. He's very helpful, I always asked Qs in class and got great responses. He plays math games so you can actually be engaged. Very clear and gives you an entirely different perspective on math. Take him for summer school I found it easier
Very nice guy, but not very clear. Its hard to understand math when the teacher himself is sturggling through the problem. I walked out of his class not having a clue.
Gives note packets with lots of example problems, which is very helpful. Is happy to help if you see him during office hours. Grades fairly. Goes off on tangents every once in a while, but usually sticks to the material.
Don't take this class with him. His first exam was pure busy work and didn't cover ANY of the key concepts he covered in depth in class. NO ONE finished the exam in time. He said '4 problems' beforehand, but it ended up being 4 problems with 4-5 subproblems each - ~19 problems. He threw curve ball questions at you that weren't the normal. :|
This teacher sucks if you aren't good at math to begin with. He seems to assume that everyone should already know "this stuff" which sucks, because if you knew it, you wouldn't be in it. Gave us test every other day. Nice but he would mess up all the time doing problems and would confuse all of us. Nice but not a great teacher for math!!
I can see a lot of people didn't think he was clear, but I think he is. I guess everyone learns differently, but this is the easiest math class I've ever taken. He does a lot of examples, and hands out note packets. He teaches through the examples, showing the process rather than treating the student like a kid and holding their hand through it all
he is very relaxed, easy going. Never take rolls! linear algebra is not an easy class but he explained everything pretty well. homework 10% of the grade and the rest are from 3 mid term, 1 take home and 1 final. Very experienced and great teacher!
280 is hard, and he didn't make it any easier. Throws curve balls on tests "To separate the lions from the hyenas." His tests were so long and hard, he had to curve the grades. You can understand the concepts and SILL fail his tests. He is nice and willing to help during office hours, but I still wouldn't recommend him if you are going for an A.
I love the Funk! I never enjoyed math before having him as my teacher. Very explanitory and teaches in steps. HW is easy as are the tests. If you have trouble learning math I highly rec. Funk. He is quite silly and has an awesome smile..cool teacher! I would take him for every math class if I could.
Mr.Funk is a great teacher as long as you put effort into the class and ask questions. He was always available to help and had a great attitude. I recommend taking this class over summer.
Not only is he great-looking, he's a great teacher! It's not difficult at all, if you put the effort into it. All you have to do is the homework, and that's highly recommended since most of your grade is based on your tests. Funk is always helpful. He answers your questions in class and is available outside of class during his office hours.
This teacher can be a lot of fun. He made trig ok. But do not miss class, you will miss something and then you are done.
Don't take 284 with him. He wont help you during office hours, all exam results are late, doesn't give progress report, doesn't care if you don't unde-will ridicule you in front of others. Often can't solve the problems from the book. He will tell you are doing fine even if you are failing the class
Eventhough this is my second time around with this class, Prof. Funk makes it interesting even if I'm relearning everything. He is willing to answer questions and provide help.
He is a nice person but not a good teacher. He will tell you that you are doing fine even if you are barely passing. Most of the times he could not even do the problems he assigned as homework. Even if you do every single problem on the homework you will barely pass the exams. Lengthy exams. Does not give enough time to finish the exam.
ok he knows the stuff but he always runs out of time and he explains the new subjet last 30 mints of the class so he tires to explain new subject last 30 mints. sometimes he can not even write the theorem rignt and also he has mistakes on the answers of the homework. i dont learn from him, i am just studying from book.
Every quiz or test is a curved ball - he will give you problems that you have never even seen before. Grades harshly (takes points away for no reason, because he thinks couldn't do so well). If you ask why he will mock. Second worst teacher at grossmont
You don't learn any thing in this class. He just likes to fill the board and at the end of the class, you are totally lost. His tests are hard, but on each test he thinks he is giving the easiest test. If you just wana take a c and learn nothing you can this class, otherwise i would not recommend it.
Easy class, you just need to do the work. Easy grader!
His tests are not two hour tests yet this is all the time you are given. He purposely makes the tests difficult and the average student left the class with a high C. His lectures don't help at all; you pretty much have to learn everything on your own. Unfortunately, the other 280 instructors aren't that good either.
I've always been pretty good at math, but I hated this class. He just puts a few examples on the board and expects you to know it all. Often goes off on random tangents. AND, when I went into office hours, he was rude and made me feel stupid for asking for help. I understand it's a hard subject, but he wasn't helpful at all. Do NOT recommend.
With Math being my major I still found his class extrememly difficult. The material may be a little hard to get but his lectures & the very few examples he gives DO NOT make it easier. I found myself trying to understand things by reading the textbook. I got a B but I've heard he tells you that you're alright even when your average is a D.
The worst teacher ever. Doesn't care about students and likes to see students struggle with the subject. It is true that he knows the material he teaches, but he doesn't know how to teach. That makes a big problem because no one understands what he's talking about except him. NOT recommended.
this guys the****!! i took 280 with another professor, but got left behind in all the lecture-lecture-homework-homework craze. Mr. Funk always helps out, works out problems to the best time allows, and even addresses situations in which the book addresses poorly. loved him in 280, and 284. id take him for ever math class i have.
Mr. Funk is awesome! He is really laid back and really helpful. Pretty easy to talk to and won't quit until you get it. Really chill guy.
Very helpful in explaining why the math works, the conceptual framework that supports each new idea. Focuses on understanding rather than lots of memorization, to make it easier to retain and apply what you learned.
He makes even simple concepts very hard to understand because he wants you to figure them out from scratch the way these concepts were discovered. If you feel like solving hard puzzles every class, every quiz and every exam - take him and pray for a good grade. Otherwise take Jeff Waller - easy going, great, very personal and helpful Math teacher.
Unhelpful, not clear and doesn't care about the student's progress or understanding of the subject.
Mr. Funk is one of my favorite math professor, Nice guy... He's very helpful even though his class is a little challenging, but it was very fun.
Awesome teacher. It is clear that he really enjoys what he is doing and that he wants students to understand the subject not just know it for a test. I highly recommend him.
NIce guy...bad teacher. In his math class and i quote "I don't like teaching formulas because I don't want you to memerize them." That is great for a math major, but people who learn by formulas will have a hard time with this class. He tries really hard but his method of teaching gets really confusing.
Funk is a great teacher; he devotes half of his class time to answering your homework questions and grades tests very leniently. He lectures by doing examples and explains the section in the context of the problem. Read the section before hand or the board will look like hieroglyphics. He's a great teacher if you spend the time the class requires.
He's taught this class so many times, he's really got it down. Take him if you can. His test are generally 4 problems where you pick 3 to do. His final has everything on it.
Pretty good overall teacher. Exams are straightforward so if you study you should be able to ace them or at least get a good grade. Nothing much else to say other than he's a extremely nice teacher who'll help you when you need it and has a passion for math.
Overall great teacher. He's easygoing and answers all questions to ensure your understanding of the subject. His tests are challenging and will actually test how well you know the material, but he grades leniently. He is passionate and willing to meet you more than halfway. Any lack of success is the student's own fault.
Prof. Funk is awesome and passionate about math! Took him for 180 and 299B. He wants everyone to learn and will go out of his way to help a student if only they show they want to learn! He grades leniently and gives bonus questions on tests or lets you pick what questions to do.
AMAZING teacher! Knows his stuff inside and out and teaches in a way (at least for me) that made things just click. I am continuing on to take him again as a teacher for math 180 because I loved his class so much.
I took this class probably 2 years back. I will admit that the class was challenging, but if it werent, I would have died at UCSD now. If you are looking for an easy A, thats fine now, but later you will definetely pay for it. My advice is always take the class for quality, not ease. This this especially true for all engineering majors
Prof Funk is an amazing teacher. He truly cares about his profession, the subject and most importantly, his students. I am taking him for the 3rd time/ different class because he is so good. I highly recommend him. He wants each student to do well and addresses questions until they are answered and understood.
He is a excellent teacher.
wonderful teacher
What can I say the best teacher tht grossmont college ever had in its history thats all I am saying
He was ticked off when asked questions. We all felt like we had to walk on eggshells. We only passed because of help from Math Lab.He didn't like repeating himself. When asked a specific question, he'd go around it& never answer the question. I complained so he demeaned me infront of the class, twice. My last class I had an A+.I love math, not him!!
He seems like a great teacher but don't let his kindness fool you. I can say he really knows his stuff but when it comes to teaching, he isn't clear or concise when explaining his lectures. It's like when you have a lot to say yet you don't know how to put it in words, that is exactly how M.Funk teaches. It's as if he gives too much useless info.
Goes through examples like it's a race. Not sure if it's because this class is higher division, or if it's because it's a night class, but he seems really annoyed to answer student's ?s during lecture. I think he assumes everyone knows their sh*t because he skips steps and doesn't really explain. If you just got by in Calc, don't take his class.
Great teacher!!! Always answers questions and explains things clearly. Tests are pretty reasonable, he tells you pretty much whats going to be on the tests and he doesnt trick students!
Prof. Funk is one of the best teachers I have ever taken. I got a C in Calc I (my fault, btw) so I had a lot of catching up to do. Well, I passed the class with an A. Funk is a great instructor, goes for the concept & helps you grasp it. NOT easy though. Do the homework & youll be fine
He's a great teacher and a fair grader and really cares about whether his students pass or fail and he instills confidence instead of freaking people out with the idea of an impossible test. He tells you what's going to be on the test and doesn't surprise you with anything new. I only struggled in the class because I procrastinated on the homework.
Had him 176 to 284. Best math teacher ever. Thank you Mr Funk, hpe to see you for 285 :)
Very clear and explains why things work out to achieve the correct solution. He is not big on attendance but if you come in late he will get irritated. Overall great teacher, straight to the point, and never gets side tracked on lectures.
Can't teach math. Way too condescending.Mocks & puts students down in front of the whole class.Makes you feel stupid when you ask questions&doesn't clarify textbook questions, just rewords them.Too many test questions/homework.People were afraid to ask him questions.Retests you with questions you got wrong from previous test in addition to new test.
This guy knows his math, but doesn't know how to teach it! He expects his students to know what he is doing. He skips steps and if you ask him to explain it he gets frustrated! He mocks his students every class meeting. His test are insanely stupid! He tests you on the new material and the past material too, even if half the class didn't do well on it!
Mr. Funk is an amazing teacher. He is passionate about his subject, and cares about the success of his students. He teaching style is clear and he works hard to help his students understand the material. I have taken math 170-285 with him, and highly recommend him for any level of math.
Not an easy class. Mr Funk will tell you straight up that its a LOT of work. Its a very fast paced class but he takes time to go over hw and any questions. His tests are to the point and he sometimes drops a few points from the total to help out. He always talks about his fav mathematician Euler, it's cute how nerdy he can be. Gonna take him again!
This class is very very hard, if you don't do the homework (like he says everyday) you WILL not pass. Mr. Funk is very straight up and tells you how much work it is, believe him. He is a great teacher and if you give him the time of day to help he explains everything well. Very smart man, loves math and really knows his stuff.
Very nice guy! I've always hated Math, but this funny guy made it enjoyable. Homework isn't due till day of test, but super easy. Unlike some professors, he even gives several old problems on the newer tests to insure that you don't forget how to do them. Definitely recommend this guy.
Gives you disappointed looks if you're late or don't do your homework. This class was supposed to be super difficult, according to the rest of the world, but Funk made it all pretty clear. He picks a few topics to seriously drive into your head and doesn't relent. Shows interesting proofs/problems if time permits
I lovew him. he made everything clear and straight to the point. His class always has so much fun. everybody seems to enjoy it a lot, like me. He is funny and smart. you MUST take him:)
I am not a math person but I am a hard-working student and I couldn't manage a B I got a C since he is a hard grader and doesn't really like re-explaning steps and kind of mocks when students ask him questions.
Mr. Funk is a real teacher - he knows his stuff. He uses real world situations that explain how the Math being learned is relevant to our everyday lives. His class, of course, is not easy, yet he is extremely helpful when the student approaches him correctly. I suggest students read the textbook to complement his lectures. It helped me out a lot!
One of the best math teachers I have ever had! The class is not easy, but if you do your homework, ask questions, and go to office hours for help, you will get an A! Mr. Funk is very nice and motivating... and he honestly believes in your ability to do well in the course. Take him!
This is the hardest calc class and there's lots to cover. There's times that he goes through materials fast - it's your job to study. The tests are straightforward, but sometimes questions will have a twist. Funk is a good teacher with the occasional inspiring word. Study hard and you'll learn some math.
Good teacher. Questions on test are like the one in hw. The really hard questions are usually bonus. Definately taking his Math 280 class.
Class is not bad. He just wants to see if you know calculus, nothing out of the ordinary will be on his tests. Do hw problems related to lecture and memorize them because that's basically the test. He is lenient on hw. Do what ever problems you like, even from the internet or other sources as long at it is related to the material.
Funk is a good teacher. He cares about his students. He's a good lecturer. His exams are difficult but he grades fairly. He freakin loves Linear Algebra. Sometimes he is jokingly condescending, some students may be turned off by that. You'll learn the subject though, I highly recommend him.
Guy knows his stuff but moves way fast. Expects you to know the details. Covers the up the board with his body while teaching.... if you ask questions will tell you ' that question is easy I'm not doing it" Expect to have to reach every section after lecture because your not going to learn anything from lecture.
I really like his teaching style. Very little lecture and a lot of practice problems. Pretty approachable and down to earth. He works fast, so don't blink!
The material of the class i thought was very easy but his tests were super hard. he curves almost all of his tests. The take home testes are like impossible to solve. I got an A in the class because i worked my butt off. I personally don't recommend him
I don't understand how this professor continues to get good reviews. Yes, he has a great personality, but he lacks in the teaching area and that is what I'm paying him for. Moves extremely fast and as others mentioned, will not do a problem if he thinks it's "easy". Take Manchester instead especially if you're taking a science class as well.
Moves extremely fast through hw questions and doesn't get very deep into explaining things. Constantly stands in front of the board during lecture making it hard to take notes and constantly erases the board before I've copied everything down. He is no nonsense though, which I like. Overall OK but slow it down a bit please.
Further into this course and not learning a thing. This guy is way too brief during lecture. Explains things as if it were common sense and can't believe someone asked a question about something. Tests are far apart and cover a ridiculous amount of material with no quizzes in between. 2nd time taking this course and more confusing than the first.
His lectures work best if you consider skimming over the chapter material before he discusses them in class. He does lecture quite fast; I think his teaching style works best for those who pick up on material quickly. I actually like Mr. Funk a lot, but I can see why some people would struggle with him. He's a very knowledgeable guy though.
ok to be honest he may not be the greatest professor for average students. If you want to learn math this is the guy to take but if your looking for a good grade then don't bother.I did learn alot but the work you do is not even similar to the tests. does not give reviews out so test can be random. must keep up and do extra if needed.
I did very well in his class but i do not understand his good ratings. He is so aggressive towards students that nobody wants to ask questions. He tests you on stuff he hasn't taught to and says he will curve it and then doesn't. Be prepared to only learn from your book. He's a good person but teaching is not his forte.
I will admit, he is definitely rough around the edges. His teaching style is fast and he is quick to take offense to student requests/questions. It took lots of reviewing on my own time, and Youtube. His tests are worded in a way to test your understanding and do not coincide well with in class instruction. However, his test curves are great!
Mr Funk is an awesome teacher. His classes are challenging but not unreasonable. He gives partial credit on tests and focuses on concept understanding. I have learned more from one of his classes than I have from combining multiple others together. I have always liked math but his classes have given me a much deeper passion for the subject.
This guy is the worst. He publicly embarrasses students for asking questions, ignores questions and doesn't seem to care at all. Don't take this class unless you want to work hard.
Really bad teacher! Idk Where he got his ok rating from. He doesn't deserve to be higher then a 2. He is very difficult to learn from. When asking a question he looks at you in disgust thinking you should already know that by now. His teaching is doing maybe 2 or 3 problems in the chapter and then moving on. Really bad teacher. DO NOT TAKE!
I took linear algebra w/ Funk during the summer and I thought he was pretty decent at teaching. He is also pretty generous at grading. While his teaching style may not be the best, I learned a sufficient amount from him and got an A in the course with a medium amount of effort.
This instructor is pretty bad. He is very fast. His test are fairly long and most students don't finish on time. The only way to get a decent grade in the class is to literally teach your self the material. The only upside to his course was the fact that his assistant that grades exams is very generous. Bottom line very bad experience with him.
The guy is funny and his grading is lenient. If you do the homework problems he assigns, you will be guaranteed at least a B. Overall, I had a very good experience with him.
Take this class if you want a teacher that can perfectly tell you what's a chapter in the math book says word for word with out reading from it. He doesn't explain things well enough for the understanding for Calc2. Horrible experience, unfortunately for all the good responses about him
Overall great teacher. He is motivating, kind, and fair. The problems on your homework are similar if not exactly the same to the questions on the exams, so there will be no surprises.
Pretty good teacher. Moves quickly and his teaching style centers around doing practice questions rather than fundamentals of each chapter. Tests are challenging, but his grading is more than reasonable.
The class was very challenging over the summer. Mr. Funk is very nice and approachable and is fairly clear about the material. I had to do about 6 hours of HW a night on top of the 3.5 hours of instruction 4 days a week. I also found it helpful to look up youtube videos on each days topic as well. If you do all that, you should be able to get an A.
Keeps you engaged. Tests are not easy, but he is more than a fair grader. Take this class if you want to learn something.
Basically you have to teach yourself how to do the work. He gives lots of homework that is worth very little points and says that the problems on the test comes right out of the textbook? NOT REALLY. Tests are not easy. I do not recommend him.
There is a lot of homework in this class, however it isn't due until the day of the test. Homework problems do appear on the test, those who say otherwise didnt do the homework (if you do 23 of it, you will get full credit). Grades on process as well as correctness. Best math prof I've ever had.
The thing that I really didn't like was the lack of time taken on vector calculus. We didn't even cover stokes theorem which is pretty important for any of the majors that need to take Calc 3. Maybe it was a victim of time or of miss placed priority. Mr. Funk is a good teacher, hard tests, curved some tests but not all so don't really on that.
One of the best profs I've had. He is a clear and engaging lecturer, and he is really passionate about math. He is also passionate about life in general and throws life advice talks into his lectures. As for the class work, tests are cumulative, no extra credit. He lets you pick your hw probs and how many you do. Keep up with it and you're solid.
Take Funk for all your math classes! He's a great teacher that enjoys what he teaches and is very clear on what he expects from you. All of his tests were tough but were straight out of the book. We ended up finishing nearly all of Vector Calc compared to other classes who didn't come close. It helps that he has a lenient grader too.
Genours grader
He is a responsible teacher, and give reasonable scores. Everything goes smoothly and clear, especially he illustrated a lot of daily life examples to help you understand the application of statistics. You try your best in statistics and you will get what you deserve.
He's a great professor who really cares about his students. Taking Precalculus over the Summer was challenging, but he helped all of the students get through it together. He would also occasionally give us life advice which was very encouraging to us all. I highly recommend his class for any Math class.
First off I hate math but Mr Funk helped a little with little life stories here and there. We would also take a small break in the middle of the class witch helped refresh my mind. All hw was due at tests. If you ask for help, he will give it. Generally understanding but also expects students to act like adults. Would definitely take again
if u are looking who really cares about their students and wants to teach the to their full ability this is not the class for you at all. if u aren't very good at math so I indeed need extra help but along with attending this class almost 5 hours a week I was along with a lot of tutoring and studying & i would still have no clue what to do on tests
By far the best Math teacher I've had. His lectures are so easy to understand. He does a great job at conveying the material. The class were based of off homework and tests only. DO YOUR HOMEWORK DILIGENTLY, they're the only study guide you have. Ask questions. Be attentive in class. Pay attention and you'll get an A. Highly recommend him.
One of the best math professors I ever had. He is easy to understand and is more than willing to help you. DO YOUR HOMEWORK it will help you a lot on the tests. Funk Mathester Flex
I had him over the summer and he had to rush because Precalc is a lot of material to cover in 6 weeks. He lectures out of the book, doing about 5 or 6 problems before going to the next section of the chapter. Every test would be about 2 or 3 chapters. Make sure you do the homework because the homework greatly affects your overall grade.
Took Mr. Funk for Stats after looking at a lot of positive reviews. He's okay. Could sometimes be rude or harsh when students would ask questions or point out mistakes he had made, especially if he didn't understand the question. BUT, he grades VERY easily. Tests were curved and over all an easy A for me. I'd say avoid if you struggle in math.
1. Goes fast, literally. He solves the problem and erases it 2. You can do hw online or written 3. No quizzes. Tests are easy but long. You either barely finish or you don't so use your time wisely 4. His grading is easy. Gives partial credit 5. Study the lecture material before lecture and go to the math center. Don't depend on his teaching
Professor Funk is an amazing teacher! His lectures I found were always very clear and helpful. I would definitely recommend him to anyone as his teaching techniques are simply excellent. He was good at explaining problems which was very helpful in making sure you understand the material. I really enjoyed taking this class over the summer!
funk is okay. he's not boring but he makes it intentional to make his exams the hardest thing you'd ever do. i was doing the homework, and the practice exams and i was still getting Ds and Cs on the exams. only smart kids get good grade in his class. weeder teacher, even if the class is not that hard.
I appreciated how on tests he gives some points for trying/doing some work even if u got the wrong answer. He's an easy grader & honestly wants you to pass his class. Gives some extra credit. Always begins class with any questions anyone has however can be a little rude if u ask certain questions.
As long as u keep up with homework & ask questions then you'll be ok. Teaches straight out of book, but does add his own explanations. Does practice problems from book as well, but goes step by step for everything & explains how to do it. At first I didn't liked how he taught out of the book, but I got used to it & ended up doing fine.
Teaches like his background in the military. Not strict, but is very black or white with how he approaches teaching. You're either here to pass or you aren't. Very straightforward and can be a little snappy when you ask a not so great question. Overall good teacher that teaches well and builds a good mathematical groundwork for you.
Very bad professor
60 students in, 20 out. Funk knows the rigors ahead and more than teach math he seeks to prepare you for the long, arduous journey. His class is structured to help you grow as a student. That means heavy lifting is up to you. Work hard and you'll grow in to a problem solver. Dont and you'll be writing poor teacher reviews. Choose wisely.
he is awesome
his exam very very hard and there is no extra credit, no exam practice paper, no drop for the lowest exam, very little notes and examples in the lecture. I do not recommend him.
his exams are very hard he always give you questions from the old exams he doesn't give extra credit
4 tests and a final. Lets you know what will be on each test. Show up to learn the material because it's harder to understand if you don't.
You don't know if he will be condescending or not, and often he quiets you if you speak up. He does not respond to hand-raising, only speaking. Learned most of content OUTSIDE of class due to little time on actual material. He isn't bad at explaining material but he is horrible with time. HOURS spent on non-relevant tangents that put us behind.
Funk was an interesting prof for multivaraiable. 4 tests and a final. Told us what would be on each one. Expects you to come to each class and to read the text book. Homework isn't awful but is easier if you read. Renting the book is a necessity. Take if you want a good prof who will challenge you. Nothing was easy.
He is a pretty condescending prof, acts like he is better than everyone because he is a teacher and we are students. He tries to explains material in detail but really just gets so off topic and rambles about unnecessary topics. No reviews or quizzes so you learn it once then a month later a test with out ever revisiting the topic.
Good with curving test grades. Do not make your first appearance in the second week of the semester, he will call you out in front of the whole class. Honestly, just attend lecture, take time to read the book outside of class (he doesn't really go into depth during lecture), and study.
I've taken over 50 professors in my undergrad and master's prerequisite courses (which included math 280) and Funk is one of the best I've seen. Not because he grades fairly, because he does, but because he teaches students how to think like an engineer through the study of mathematics. I can't speak highly enough of Funk and his teaching standards
Prof. Funk allows you to use your equation sheets on your tests and final. Hes pretty straight forward and is good at explaining the content. He will help you understand if you dont get it the first time. Highly recommend! HE also curves test grades if the class does bad as a whole!
Funk likes to joke and talk about stuff that is not related to math in the beginning of the class. His lectures are a waste, since he spends the whole time on just two examples. He thinks very high of himself and lets you know every day in class. The exams are challenging. My only complain is the useless lectures and the time spent on them.
Just done the homework (100% completed), do the review and ask question before the test.
I SUCK at math. I finished his class with a B+. So if I can do it- you can do it EASILY. If you show up to class- he will pass you. Even if you have a D or F. I had a friend in my class who tried his best and at the end of the semester- took care of his grade. You have to attend class and put in the work. Ask questions. He gives great life advice
Do not recommend taking Math 110 with him if you have not been in a math class for awhile, struggle to learn on your own, or struggle with math in general. Class is very homework heavy and most of your learning is out of the textbook (which is free online) I personally haven't had difficulty with math in the past, but his lectures leave me lost.
Mr. Funk spends 1/2 the class reviewing homework questions. It isnt necessarily a bad thing but the class is only 75 minutes long, two days a week. Two sections have to be taught each class. The last 10 minutes is usually spent reviewing one section. If math is not your strength DO NOT TAKE HIM!! The book he uses is not easy to follow.
He takes problems straight from the homework and puts them on the test. Do your homework and you'll easily have at least a B.
Curves tests, thats nice. U can tell he genuinely cares but he lectures fast & seems irritated by questions says things like "if you read it at home U'll understand" packets of homework only worth 10 pts final is 20% of ur grade whoever said this is a self taught class was telling the truth I went to tutoring EVERYDAY & still barely passed.
He provides a FREE online textbook. He does move quickly through material but he is very encouraging and takes the time to answer any questions. Stay on top of homework and you will do well. Homework is also only due on test day!
Teaches different ways to get answers, TAKE NOTES ON LECTURES!! Math is repetition to grasp concept-it feels overwhelming but push threw-don't stay stuck on 1 thing push forward, ask ?s. From start of class If u need help TALK TO HIM-he'll guide u. Credit is given if u struggle but he sees your learning. Online book- free! BEST TEACHER I'VE HAD
About 90% of all the material on tests you will have to learn on your own, spends half the class going over the homework. If you are up to sit in class and do literally nothing, then come home and use your own time to learn what should have been taught to you in class, then this the prof for you. No extra credit for anything.
Expects you to be college level ready from day 1. However, just show him you know how to stick it out and put in the hard work, he notices.
Not the worst professor I have ever had, but the whole class is very self-led. Spends most of time in class going over irrelevant concepts, honestly dont even need to show up to class. Not a horrible teacher but just very vague And can tend to be condescending. Seems irritated when students ask questions
Generic bad professor. Talks to you condescendingly and makes you feel bad about asking questions / getting things wrong. He can't do half of the things he expects you to learn. Grade breakdown is brutal, 80% exams 20% homework. No direction for exams, he just says "study the homework" without any practice problems. Take him as a last resort only.
I wouldn't recommend this class at all. His advice on studying for exams is insufficient. I'm pretty sure none of the exams are dropped, too. Take him as a last resort only. No study guide given, so the tests are difficult to prepare for. I have taken way better math professors than this one. So don't take his classes unless you are desperate.
Funk is not for the faint of heart. Exams will resemble homework problems, some will be exact. If you dont have the time to familiarize yourself with the homework then exams will be difficult. His method teaches resourcefulness and execution. That means you have to apply yourself and understand the concepts. Theres no free lunches with Funk.
Gives great resources and good lessons.
Also he is kind to talk to one-on-one, the professor doesn't seem to respect students during lecture. Tests are extremely difficult compare to other math classes I had taken. Expects you to answer challenging questions on the test. The only thing nice about his class was he actually curved my final up to an A. He notices how hard you work
The first test we took had to be curved by 18% because it was so difficult. Nine high level math problems in an hour and fifteen minutes, many worded in challenging ways. Don't take if you get test anxiety, only if you like math and love a challenge. No quizzes, HW 20%, final 20, tests 60. Nice guy, but BRUTAL tests, keep up w hw and ASK QUESTIONS.
The worst Math professor I've ever had on the campus. Lectures so boring. Not good at explaining. Expect you should know everything. Must study by yourself
Professor Funk is a very nice guy and easy to talk to. He really understands his math well so he does skip steps while doing his problems which may make you lost. He likes it when students respond to him during lectures and ask homework questions. The tests are a bit tough but done through my math lab. Homework as well and there can be a lot.
This is a tough class, but what else do you expect from college level PreCalc/Trig. He gives homework every lecture, DO IT, not only for your grade, but you will not understand the material without it. That being said, he is a very fair grader, grades on a curve. And he does homework problems during lecture and extensive reviews before exams.
Would 100% agree with the review that said Funk speaks to his students condescendingly. Its very off putting. You also never know if he will be mad at you for speaking up. Half the time he expects people to answer and the other half the time he yells at people for interrupting. So confusing.
He is a nightmare. If you want to get D or F, take his class. Math 284 doesn't require Math 281 as its prerequisite, BUT lots of times he said "Oh, you know this already in Math 281, so I will skip it" Be prepared to feel stupid, anxious, depressed, and mad in his class. DON'T EVER TAKE HIS CLASS
Gives way too many problems for hw. His lectures are super boring and they are pretty much pointless to attend as all of his teachings of theories and concepts are done through videos outside of class. Not that great as a person considering he is very rude towards students. Tests are super hard, made a couple students cry when they failed them.
First thing, his lectures are more homework reviews than anything so you will have to learn the material outside class. He grades extremely fair and drops your two lowest test scores (out of seven). He also wants participation, so be sure to ask questions or provide answers when asked. If you apply yourself, you will pass. Try not to fall behind!
This class was flipped as we mainly used lectures to review hw problems, so you will have to actually learn the concepts outside of class. Fair grader when it comes to tests as he drops your two lowest exams. Try not to fall behind on HW because there are a lot of problems and its your primary study guide for exams. Heed this advice on HW please!
He tough. Lectures are reviewing hmwk ?s, take good notes, step by step. FOLLOW THE RULES. If u have ?s ask outside of class time. Test ?s are similar to hmwk ?s. DONT fall behind, if you struggle let him know, *Communication is key w/him* He taught me several diff ways /techniques to solve problems. If u comprehend hmwk you'll do fine
Despite previous reviews, Funk is a good professor to have for calc 3. As long as you keep up with the homework, you will do fine on exams. He also curves exams based on the solutions provided by students because he can see how hard others including yourself work. Do not worry, just make time to keep up with homework and you will do fine!
Calc II is no walk in the park. That being said, Funk is a pretty reasonable guy. No tricks or gochyas on tests but he does expect you to know your stuff. Just do the homework, come to class prepared with questions and be ready to work hard. Youll do fine.
Professor Funk can be very funny but always focuses the class time on learning which I really appreciate. Grades are 60% homework, 20% tests and 20% a CUMULATIVE final. The tests are almost identical to the homework, and the final is VERY similar to the test questions. Practice homework questions constantly and you'll get an A.
Professor Funk teaches mostly by showing some basic concepts and then by doing problems from the textbook. He may seem monotone but I promise he cares. Do your homework, show up, pay attention, ask questions, and you'll pass. He usually arrives 15 mins early before class starts, he will go over homework questions during this time and in class.
I honestly do not get all the bad reviews this is the smoothest going course I've taken at Grossmont. The class is straightforward and Funk really does set you up for success. Also, I don't get all the things saying he's mean, that's totally wrong he is super nice.
Mr. Funk is an amazing teacher. He adequately prepares his students for test and has an ability teach his student concepts well. The only downside is his handing writing. It is really difficult his notes sometimes. So, you might have to sometimes review notes from your friends or other sources.
This is genuinely the most difficult class I HAVE EVER TAKEN. All LECTURES are him just doing homework problems and literally just reading from the book. Grade Breakdown: 60% Exam, 20% Hmwrk, 20% Final. GET READY TO LEARN ON YOUR OWN. He gets annoyed & is condescending if you ask for help. I've never felt this miserable and helpless in math.
Take him Only As Last Resort. Grade Breakdown is Suuuper Exam Oriented: 60% Exam, 20% Homework, 20% Final. His Lectures are just doing homework problems. You MUST prepare to learn on your own. Do as many Practice problems as you can & Study each day, never skip class & come 10 to 20 minutes Early to class. Stay In constant contact with him!
Don't understand the low ratings I've seen for 285. Amazing and down to earth guy! He's so caring and is willing to help you if you need it. The exams are like the homework and is very generous with points. I wish I could take him again! Do the homework and you'll do fine!
If you want to learn calc, take another class. He rarely lecture in class. He complains about how much he hates online classes, and yet he expects you to watch his online lecture videos before you come to class. In lecture, he goes over hw problems that you can only solve if you've already read the textbook or seen a video on YouTube. Avoid him.
not sure why the bad reviews. put in effort, you will get a good grade. he wants us to at least glance at the material before class then ask questions. if you plan on not doing homework or learning, this is not the guy for you. participate and you will know the material, if not, ask why you are still in college if you don't care; it's not required.
Lots of homework, but it's graded on effort over correctness. Forgiving late work policy if it's not excessive, and exams are fair. Definitely a class where the homework is harder than the exam, but if you do it, you'll be fine. Lectures are fairly helpful, and supplementary videos are provided. Don't miss a lecture if you can help it, though.
He managed to make a fairly easy math subject into the most difficult, soul-sucking class. Between the homework, quizzes, and exams, prepare to spend 5-12 hrs on this class each week. The entire class is run through an automated program on another website that you have to purchase bc he cannot be bothered to pay attention to his online courses.
Loved this professor. Class is 60% weighted on exams, but the exams are not terribly unreasonable and are curved insanely well. Homework is graded based on effort and effort alone, you only have to finish around ~80% of the HW each chapter to get full credit which was a huge time AND energy saver. Didn't enjoy his lectures but he's helpful 1on1.
Do all of your homework ahead of time and ask lots of questions. he is always willing to help out his students but treat him with the same respect you'd like to receive. I cannot emphasize enough that you should complete the homework and study guide. The help is there you just have to take it. Great professor if you put in the work
Professor Funk has a unique teaching style, but if you engage with it, the class can be very rewarding. The homework is manageable, and the exams are curved. unstuck study proved helpful for study prep.
I took Math 281 in Spring 2024 and Math 285 in Fall 2024 with Professor Funk. His clear explanations and team-oriented approach make tough concepts easy to understand. Even though English isn't my first language, I can still grasp everything. He's the best! I wish he give 284 next spring
Professor Funk had such an engaging and motivating teaching style. You really need to put in the work on your own time to understand this course and its material. He always showed up 30 minutes before class for any homework or clarification questions and consistently gave us motivational speeches after exams- also learned all the students by name!
