Class is definitely hard, but it's Calculus so what do you expect. Moberly is pretty clear on what he wants you to know. Gives you a study guide of what to study for before a test. Expect a good amount of homework and studying every week for this class. Overall great teacher, hard class.
Not the hardest class but definitely not an easy A. He was very helpful though and made sure everyone understood the lesson. There was homework every week but very understanding if you can't turn it in on time. Great teacher but don't expect an A without actually studying
I have him for both AE 280 and MATH 254 and he is a very jolly, teacher who is extremely into getting to know his students and problems that they have. He even showed up at a study session. However, he teaches using confusing powerpoints from the book, refuses to do problems in class, and is unable to explain concepts clearly.
He means well but I feel like he doesn't know how to teach. He assigns homework problems that he has had difficulty working out himself. He openly admitted to plugging in his own test question in wolfram alpha to see if it works out, meaning he didn't even solve his own problem! Gives exams and homework but does not return to see how to improve
Smart and energetic but doesn't make the course easy.
His tests are guaranteed to take you the full length of the class and an hour more. But you won't be given an hour more, you're just given the hour of the course, and a fruity teacher that's always available, but not much help.
I like his way of showing partial fraction expansion.
teaches off a powerpoint he can't even follow, can't solve his own example problems without the class's help, gives 5 tests, one test 5 days before the final, explains things in an unnecessarily difficult way to make sure you know he went to CalTech. Good guy, not a remotely good teacher.
I don't recall any other professor bringing pizza to a student study session. Decent effort at taking on a challenging subject. Fair? I think so. Easy? No way.
Moberly is quite possibly the worst professor I have ever had. He makes no effort to do example problems in class, doesn't give half as much time as you would need for tests, and makes everything impossible to the point where not even he could solve it easily. DO NOT TAKE this professor. You will learn nothing.
Moberly is a pretty cool/good teacher. He is extremely helpful and tries to show up to any group study sessions. He clearly states what is going to be on every test so there are never any surprises. People grade this professor way too harshly. Moberly is actually one of the better math teachers I have had. Don't Be Lazy in this class! ^-^
He cares about student input. That said, his lectures are pretty useless. He rambles for the first 20 minutes and then has no time to finish anything he starts. Very disorganized. Tests are impossible to finish within 50 min time frame but he takes that into consideration. If you can, I wouldn't recommend taking this class.
Algebra is not my favorite, his chalkboard examples uninspiring. Professor Moberly provided test outlines, extra time with the homework when the class members were willing to admit that they couldn't get it done. He added calculated columns to let us know just what we needed on the final. I can pass even without the final, and in reach of a B :-)
His lectures are useless, straight out the book, but the occasional videos are God-like. HW is too long to be done without copying solutions. The tests are way too long, you can't get out all that you know. Overall I do not like his teaching style. I respect him for his overall consistency and fairness. This class is all about curve.
He is very passionate about the material, an even more passionate about teaching it. By nature, the class is difficult, but he will help you individually. His teaching methods are very good, sometimes he will give out a worksheet for us to work on in groups and he will go around the room helping everyone. It's rare when a professor works this hard.
The people who rate Moberly as a bad teacher are the kids who didn't try in his class. The course is naturally difficult so lazy people will have a hard time. His lectures may not be great, but if you pay attention and put effort into studying the material it is not to hard. He's willing to help you even if you don't approach him.
His lectures are very boring. The material is fairly hard but if you put time into it it isn't too bad. Moberley is willing to help and will attend student made study sessions if he has time. The tests are very difficult and have a lot of material that won't be taught directly by him. Overall I wouldn't take his class again
Moberly is clearly very smart but was terrible at explaining concepts. I honestly think he was too smart to teach algebra because everything seems so simple to him. He teaches off power points and is not helpful. Stay away.
He figures out ways to work the Quadratic Formula into a final exam problem in an unrelated mathematics subject. Not very open to other ways of factoring. It's like he's in league with my high school math teacher, trying to stick it to me.
Lectures are book power points. Tests are designed not to be finished in 50min, more like 2 hours. The homework is busy work. Having said that. I have never had a more involved professor. He is a good person, and he really means well for his students. I'm not a fan of his tests, but I appreciate his dedication.
It's true he lectures with the Kreyszig book's powerpoints, but that is the text and at least you know where he is at. When you listen he does fill in the gaps and echos certain mantras "System", "Non-homogeneous", "Linearity", "Quadratic", "Complex Conjugate"... I'm hoping that much of this will stick. It was drinking from a fire hose.
DO NOT TAKE THIS GUY NO MATTER WHAT! WORST PROFESSOR IN SDSU! IF YOU ASK FOR HELP HE ANSWERS YOU IN A MEAN WAY!
Moberly cares a lot about the success of his students. He joined the facebook group for the class and regularly logged on to answer questions and post resources. He often attended the study session that were organized just before the tests to help out anyone who was struggling. He did everything he could to help people learn the material and pass.
Dr. Moberly is the best math professor I have ever had. He is extremely dedicated to his students. Dr. Moberly is always available to help students, he even showed up to multiple student study sessions to help out before exams. He gave us five exams and a final which were hard but I feel like I learned diff eq very well. Hard but good professor.
If you're looking for an easy differential equations class then don't be an engineer. Moberly always tells you exactly what to study for. He tells you exactly what problems he is putting on the test. You have to work for it but stop expecting to be handed a grade just for showing up. Moberly wants to see his students learn and succeed.
He thinks that we already know the subject that he explains it in a way that is too complicated. Definitely a bad decision taking that guy.
This professor is very helpful and does everything he can do to clarify any concept, for any student. His tests are tough, yes, however he gives great descriptions of the test problems and grades very fairly. Do your homework, study hard and you'll do great. If your looking for advice on which professor to choose for AE280, choose the Moberly.
Terrible professor
I think that Professor Moberly tried really hard, but he's just a scattered person. It's hard to follow him in lecture, so I stopped going to class. I ended up teaching myself everything. But he also gave us youtube links to help. He let's you know what's on the exams (so helpful), so all you have to do is work on HW examples and you'll be fine.
Moberly is the opposite of mean. Almost too nice. He will show up to your study groups and bring pizza. (Unheard of). Very smart guy but was not prepared to teach ae 280. However, tells almost exactly what will be on the test. There will always be one thing you have never seen on each test which is a bummer but it's manageable. Can't be lazy!!!!
Moberly is far from being a good professor, I do not know how some student think he is nice or good, but trust me he is the worst!
This guy is extremely enthusiastic about helping you out. He will literally hunt you down in the library to help you with homework or with studying. Its a tough class, sure, but if you crack open the book and do a couple examples you'll be golden. Only downside is not being able to review your past exams/homeworks.
What can I say? Spent 5 hours on the first day to do his homework. Class material is tough, and I spend a lot of time teaching myself using Google and Youtube. Tests are super hard and long, there is no way you can complete it all in 50 minutes. He doesn't examples in class and PowerPoints are straight from the book. He is very helpful though.
Spent a lot of time doing **my** homework too. Learned a lot from it. Moberly times the homework to be due on test day - that can be grueling at times, but it seemed to be a sure way to get it done. Others grumble that the powerpoints were from the book - by projecting in-book examples from the book on whiteboard, he did add to and explain them.
This guy expects students to figure out to who turned in their homework without putting their name on it. How are we supposed to know when we don't get back graded homework?
He's extremely willing to help, open to opinions, enjoys his job, and is a relatively happy person in class. However, he's... probably not the best at explaining or showcasing examples if that's how you learn. I had to self-teach myself the whole class. Be prepared to become Youtube's best friend if you aren't already.
Difficult class. Very content with the curve.
Here's the deal, Moberly does his best to teach this difficult material. If you want to get an A however, you have to put in the work at home, study the material on your own, and do a lot of practice problems. One good thing is that he told you specifically which problems would be on the test. Overall, put in the work and you can get an A :)
Took him for Linear Algebra. I only went to class on exam days. It is an easy class to learn on your own just look up videos online and make sure to really look over your test when you get it back. Argue for your grade he gives points back if you convince him of your reasoning. He's about what's on the test just study the study guide.
Worst teacher on earth! Went to cal tech, but can't teach for sh*t. Very passionate about the subject, but he jumps around when he teaches. He designs test that you can't finish and get a perfect score. Be aware of what you're getting yourself into. Don't take him! Alert, don't take him unless necessary.
Hey Dr. Moberly, it looks really bad when your students can't even spell Caltech... what are you teaching them anyway?
Only works on actual examples in office hours - just do them in class! Assigns too much homework. Is not engaging. Don't take unless it's your only option.
It would be better if he worked on more homework examples in class so the students can grasp the concepts easier. However if you go to his office hours he is extremely helpful and explains everything much better. He cares so much about his students and is willing to put in a lot of outside time to make that happen. A very solid professor for AE280.
I feel bad for Moberly. He's a really nice person, and he's always excited to teach, though to be honest he's not that great at it. He definitely knows his material and will help you outside of class though. Homework is long, get the solution manual, it'll help. Tests are solid. Tells us every question that will be on the test. Easy A if you work.
Moberly looks happy to teach, but he is not good at all. Will never give clear, direct answers to questions, grading criteria is horrendous (Final project, had no clue what to do). Exam "outline" is cryptic. WileyPlus has nothing to do with his exams. The green tickets make me feel like a child. Also his seating arrangement for tests is crazy.
Great guy, not so good professor. 5 midterms, 1 final, gives out study guides that describes what the questions are going to be but doesn't give you example problems, "tells you to make your own". All our midterms where graded super late so no one really knew where they stood in the class entering the final.
BEWARE: Moberly is very disorganized and unclear. He seems unprepared as he heavily relies on Wileyplus slides and struggles to answer questions. Wileyplus was a nightmare constantly crashing and rejecting right answers. Iclicker was also needed. Exams were random and he has an unnecessary, time-consuming sitting chart. Lots of room for improvement
He teaches everything by PP & has iclicker questions every class for attendance. He seems a bit scattered when he lectures, & covers most material at least 2 times over. He doesn't work through many problems in class , he just teaches you the concepts & leaves the how to problem solving to you. pretty easy grader tho. very helpful in office hours
Really not as bad as these reviews make him out to be. In my class at least MOST students didn't put any effort into the class, then antagonized the professor when they didn't like their grade. As for the project get started early and ask questions often. Not only will you do well but you will be one of only a few students who didn't procrastinate.
Dr. Moberly is one of the most intelligent people I've learned from. If only he could communicate what he knew to his students. He speaks only in theorem language and does not do any examples that are on the tests. Clear test grading criteria. I attended every lecture, studied religiously, and emailed him constantly, and was able to do well.
Dr. Moberly truly cares about his students. His tests are not as difficult as people say. It's exactly what he tells you it will be on the study guide. If you study the study guide, you can easily get an A in the class. Make sure you go to class to get the clicker points. YouTube videos help the most as his lectures are energetic but unorganized.
The other reviews say the most, but also know this: Study for Moberly's exams. Use external resources like Khan Academy, and watch his video examples, but beware, some of them are wrong. Re-work the homework and study the 'study guide' he sends before each exam, and you'll pass. Prepare for a lot of ambiguous answers to your questions.
Really nice guy but, unorganized class. Often didn't even know we had hw due. Describes the exact test problem but you have to find examples in the book. Be careful since he actually tests for conceptual knowledge on top of arithmetic. Hw and extra credit has a lot of weight in the grade, you'll pass if you got to class.
Get ready to spend some time in this class. Make sure you study, and do the HW and the study guides. This class has mandatory participation, HW's, 3 or 5 exams depending on the class meetings, and a final. Examination is very controlled; assigned seats, etc. You will understand the subject well, and learn a lot once you do everything required.
He is a nice guy, however his class was the most UNORGANIZED class I have ever taken. Often times, he was unaware as to when HW was due, or he'd change the homework at midnight the day before it was due, unannounced. Although his outlines are helpful, tests include conceptual knowledge and are very difficult. You won't receive any work back. AVOID!
Prof. Moberly is a nice guy! He's just very unorganized. Writes very small and messily crams everything . The moment he finishes writing something, he doesn't wait for his students to finish copying it down. He doesn't do many problems and basically reads off the textbook. If it weren't for clicker questions and I'd skip class to study on my own.
Really nice man but cant express his thoughts clearly. I went everyday, participated the most out of all the students in the class, really worked hard and didnt get anything. Even went to Im for help and he couldnt. Nice guy but cant teach/ not helpful
This professor does not explain the material clearly and often makes mistakes and does not clearly explain the correct ways of solving the problems when he makes mistakes but rather moves on to a different problems. He usually uses the most complicated problems for his exams. Get ready to spend lots of hours trying to learn the material on your own
Honestly one of the worst professors ever. Like many others said, his lectures are bad and he's disorganized. Tests are extremely hard overall. Nice guy, but for a professor, he's best avoided. It's a real slap in the face that he's the one teaching AE515; AE department, PLEASE hire someone else for AE515! Like someone students praised for AE280.
When someone on here says he is the worst they probably never went to a study session. When there would be group study sessions he would show up and help. I found that the people that are demeaning him don't really make the best effort to study. He isn't a great teacher in a lecture but the whole class can be learned by yourself, just make an effor
He follows the book very carefully, in his lectures he shows all the shortcuts and little exceptions that you will need to pass the tests. Not only did he show up to every study session that someone asked him to go to but he fired up the room to do math. Overall great teacher, he clearly loves math and he makes himself available to students.
Terrible, reads the slides. Needed a teacher to teach not regurgitate the text book. Also makes you do problems that are not in the textbook assigned in the syllabus. Makes you bark like a seal for homework extra credit or something. We aren't in elementary school anymore. I know he reads this learn from your bad reviews not your good ones bud.
Good: High-energy, posts YouTube examples, very knowledgeable, gives solid study guides for tests, gives extra credit for answering questions in class Bad: You will be teaching yourself 75% of the content. Too reliant on textbook (which is mediocre), assigns HW before finishing teaching the material, ignores negative criticism, iClickers.
Dr. Raymond Moberly is a nice guy. With that out of the way, he should not be teaching anything above tenth-grade math. His lectures come across as incompetent. He essentially reads from the book (lecture slides provided by publisher) and stumbles through the most basic concepts. He would be unable to complete his own tests. However, he tries.
Dr. Moberly is an excellent professor, the people who say otherwise are slackers who don't want to put in the effort to learn the material. He is very passionate and extremely knowledgeable, if you have any questions just ask during class or office hours. If you can't learn this material on your own, you are probably not fit to be an engineer.
Dr. Moberly is a nice guy and has a passion for teaching mathematics. However, his class lectures are disorganized and revolve around iClicker questions that oftentimes are written incorrectly and offer no quality introduction to the course material. Exams are monstrous and the homework is an exercise in frustration rather than a test of knowledge.
Get ready to learn nothing and pass! Half of the homework was given in the last week. He gives tests that he cant even solve and are not possible to complete in the alloted amount of time. He does not do examples in class that would be helpful for the tests. The clicker questions are 2+2 while the tests are walking to school uphill both ways.
I think he is a fairly bad lecturer when is come to getting any learning inside the class so be prepared to teach yourself. Example probs in class? Only if your lucky. Outside of class I think hes pretty cool to talk to but his tests are complete trash with the amount of time your given to complete them and be prepared to memorize key terms.
This class is tough, if you're anything short of a calculus 2 professional then expect to have problems. Professor helps outside of office hours but class hours are trash. Test are hard, Homework is long and examples are almost strictly theory. Prepare to teach yourself.
Homework wasn't given back, and I don't believe going over the tests was a helpful. Tests aren't representative of the homework. Otherwise, he's a great guy that shows he cares and will help you learn if you put in the effort and show interest. You'll be doing some self-teaching no doubt, so don't give up and try to pay attention for the clickers.
I think a lot of people blame Dr Moberly for the course material being so dry/tough(it definitely is both of those things). Still, Dr Moberly grades fairly, is enthusiastic in lecture, posts youtube examples, and comes to the library for study groups that students set up(!!). I have never had a teacher do that. Put in the effort and you'll do fine.
Dr. Moberly is one of the most helpful professors I have taken at SDSU. The material is quite difficult, but he frequently offers to stay after lecture to review problems, answer questions, etc. There is a fair amount of homework, however, the abundance of material provides a lot more practice for exams.
He was a super cool guy and made lectures more enjoyable for a pretty boring subject. He made it easy to understand by doing a lot of example problems. The class had a total of 110 attainable points (not including extra credit) and the class is graded out of 100 points, so it's a pretty decent curve.
While he does make an otherwise boring topic fairly interesting through enthusiastic lectures, the material covered in class and in the homework is nothing like the exams. Examples are almost all theoretical, so be prepared to teach yourself if you can't make it to office hours. I've heard he gives good feedback, but he just told me to study more.
Pros: He cares about math. He's a nice guy and receptive to questions you may have. Cons: His exams are terrible, like even knowing the material wont garuntee tou can solve everything in the time given. He almost never shows examples and when he does its 50/50 that they will make sense. You WILL need to teach yourself to pass this class.
Professor Moberly really cares about students' success and will give you all of the tools to get a good grade in his class. 3 exams and a final, which were all based on the outlines that he provides. There are some difficult concepts but if you go to class, do the homework, go to the study sessions, you can do really well. Great guy & professor!
Great Professor. If you do not understand something he will stay and help you until you do. This is by far the most intelligent doctor Ive ever had. I am not a genius, but golly spending some time with Dr. Moberly I sure feel like I COULD maybe one day be one. Two thumbs way up. Thats all.
Moberly is one of the best engineering profs I've had at my time at SDSU. He makes sure his lectures are interesting and fun and he's a great teacher who cares about his students. He handled the online classes due to COVID super well and is easily one of my favorite profs I've taken. Class can be homework heavy but tests are fair and reasonable.
By far one of the most unnecessary difficult courses in the AE department. Moberley is a very nice guy but he makes the class EXTREMELY stressful even during the COVID situation. I had to work way harder than all my other classes to get a good grade. He assigns an insane amount of homework and tests are insanely difficult.
This guy makes the class SO hard. He teaches on powerpoint slides and doesn't do too many examples. His tests are unnecessarily hard and confusing. He assigns 20 homeworks throughout the semester. Saids this class should be the least of our worries yet it is the center of all of my stress. He makes things so difficult not just on us but also himsel
He is such a tough grader on every test his grading criteria is not fair in some situations. You have to anticipate what he wants from you on the test to do really well. This class was really disorganized in my opinion and hard for no reason.
His lectures are based off PowerPoint slides that do not include example problems, yet the homework and exams are all problem based. Don't bother asking questions because he does not know how to solve anything. Additionally, if you have learning accommodations, get ready to feel judged, demeaned, and unsupported. He is the worst professor I had.
Study the chapter before the lecture, this will help you with "participation" points because he will give polls during the class. There are 16 short quizzes and a final. HW is generally easy til ch 11. Before each short quiz, he gives a WS which is nearly identical. If you pay attention to the lecture, read the book, and don't fall behind its easy.
Spent the 1st day complaining about bad reviews on here only to prove them right the rest of the semester. Heavy on zoom polls. Doesn't know how to use canvas so all of us had a 0. something the whole semester. Would only complain about the author of the textbook during the lecture. He would start a problem and then not even know how to solve it.
Nice guy, terrible professor. None of us had no idea how we were doing in the class until after it was over. Weekly quizzes (sometimes 2) harder than anything ever discussed in class. almost no example problems, explains everything theoretically. Never gave straight answers when students would ask questions.
Assigns wayyyyy too much homework, about 20 problems every five days of very difficult high level math. Plus in class work sheets that always take longer than the end of class. Basically requires students to use facebook to ask questions about homework since he doesn't want to teach
All other negative reviews are correct. Moberly is only able to explain and do examples of the dot product(we learned that in high school). There is a week and a half of class left and hes assigned 7 homeworks and 4 quizzes and we need to study for the final. Frequently has poll questions he doesnt know the answer to. Only responds to Girls
Dr. Moberly is a nice guy, but he lacks self-awareness and treats his students as subclass. There is a NEW homework due after the final. He responds to feedback with counterarguments instead of listening. He would rather have 2 working camera POV than teach class. Stumbles through examples. Doesn't know how to use Canvas. Can't answer own poll Qs.
He seems like a cool dude and a huge math geek (in a good way) but he is the worst professor I have ever had. Lectures are boring and unrelated to HW and exams, assigns HUGE amounts of HW and quizzes, and has graded poll questions which he expects you to get right before he even attempts to teach you something. Does not give feedback or grades even
Dr. Moberly is clearly very passionate and knowledgeable about his subject, however, he is an extremely poor instructor. Minimalistic sample problems done in lecture, runs through slides and content, HW heavy. On the final he had a question you couldn't solve without THE CORRECT answer from the last quiz. I tried my hardest I hope I pass lol.
