he is has an attitude problem but if you go to his class every day you will get an A. His tests are not what you will expect, they are much easier.
doesn't seem like he likes students. he teaches from pictures in the text. test questions are a little tricky. only gives 2 exams a semester (midterm and final) with no chance at extra credit work. if u go to class everyday, it's possible to get an A or B
Is kind of a wise-guy. Test are not too bad as long as you study. Gets angry when you ask him what's going to be on the test. Overall not that great, but I think he's better than a few other professor's in the PHS department, which is pretty bad.
He's a very straight forward teacher. He uses diagrams from the textbook and explains them. His exams are based on his notes. So now, how much more straightforward can you be? If you're not getting the grade you wanted, then you don't deserve it.
In the beginning he really makes u think he's gonna be easy.. but as the course goes on.. its really difficult.. and he tells u the exam is gonna be on material covered in clas.. but NO there's alot of stuff that he didnt go over that'll be from the text
Come on, he gave like a 17 point curve in total midterm and final. Go to class! His test questions are straight from class, if you pay attention. And study the material, i mean don't just expect to get an A if you won't even give an effort to learn it.
he isn't very receptive to questions, but otherwise he's a good teacher, if you follow along with him as he covers the material you'll see that he doesn't cover much of the chapters except the beginning concepts, his tests come straight from his notes
he is not hard ONLY if you have his tests, he's too lazy to change them so if you have them then you are good to go. however, he is himsel makes mistakes in test and finds many questions confusing. he teaches most of the book but he skeeps a lot as well.
UGH half the class fails, be prepared to give up most of your summer avoid at all costs!!!!
as long as JUST study his notes you can get a A in the class. dont bother even reading the textbook, cuz that stuff is not even on the test. everything he does in class is on the test so just go over his notes and you'll do fine.no need to buy the textbook! i got an A without it!
he is not hard all you have to do is pay attention in class - youll do fine. ask as many questions so you understand everything. do over and study ALL his notes- dont worry about the txtbk.he goes kinda fast but as long as you keep up with all your material you'll do fine.midterm was easy not final
Avoid him!! only gives 2 exams, doesnt curve and isnt helpful..he thinks that everyone knows the subject as well as he does..dont expect a good grade if u take him.
Ok. he is soooo Easy! the easiest out of all the biochem professors. just study his notes, copy down everything he says and you'll do good. He teaches like a real college professor, not one of the St. John's professors(who spoon feeds you). I recommend him over the others.
ok seriously, if you go to class write down everything he says and make an effort to look at the textbook when you don't understand something, you will not have a problem! he's not that bad.. he just wants us to think for ourselves. i recommend him over the others for sure
Avoid him!!! he thinks everyone knows the subject as well as he does...some of the ques on the test are things that he never even mentioned, and he goes waay too fast to go by the book..take someone else - at least ull learn something
he's really not as bad as everyone makes him out to be. if you study his notes and go to class, you'll be fine. just keep up with studying, dont cram everything the day before the exam. i recommend him over the other biochem teachers. i actually did better in biochem than in orgo/chem. take himmm...
he doesnt seem to like anyone. hes horrible at answering any questions about test, which sucks because its a midterm and final class only. but, he's the easiest out of all the biochem professors, so just study his notes in class. the textbook is useful only for review, cuz he skips alot of stuff.go to class and take good notes!!!
Hated him, but he is the easiest out of all the other professors. Straight from the notes. Record him and you'll be fine. But very unhelpful if you have a question. Take it over the summer to get a high grade. He does curve, but it all depends on the entire class average, which sucks. Get hold of his old exams and you;ll be fine.
this guy didnt show up to our final, he thought it was the wrong day wtf...then his final has questions that are so ambiguous...overall i would have another professor like wurpel if i had a choice...but hes not great a better bio chem professor...and midterm is like 15 chapters and final is cumulative...if u have a choice choose someone else.
what a nightmare. I asked the wrong people's advice before taking him. Avoid if possible in the subject of anatomy. theres just too much information that hes trying to squeeze intoy uor brain, and intimidating during class and office hrs. Biochem might be a diff story..
i bought his midterm n final & they helped me so much because I had NO idea what he was talking about in class. GET ahold of his old tests, they save you
haha he missed our final, then probably decided to make it harder because it was postponed.. even though that was his fault to begin with! Said that there would be 3 or 4 questions prior to midterm.. turned out to be 10 questions out of 35 or 40Q! Questions are straightforward and possible to do well.
Where do I begin? He's extremely paranoid; you can't come to class 1 minute late, you can't use the bathroom, and you can't eat to save your life, cause its a distraction... to who? to him. very smart but doesn't know how to relay his smartness so you can understand.

He isnt the worst of professors, nobody in my class failed. But your best bet is to work very hard and try to kick butt on the midterm cuz thats as easy as its ever going to get, the midterm was so easy, average was in the 80's. Final was very hard, avg. was in the 60's. He's excited to answer questions and hes very clear. Just DONT show up late!!!
Hes an alright professor. Hes a bit OCD. You cant eat, you cant come in 1 sec late, nor can you do anythgi nbesides pay attention to him. But hes VERY fair, probabaly the most fair out of all the biochem professors. Only test you on stuff he goes over, and fair amoutn of chapters. Take him over any of the other professors
hes the type of teacher that teaches very well but only tests you on the tidbit of info that you probably wouldn't think he would test you on so you don't write it in your notes..don't take him!- i studied like hell (scholarship student)and still got a D. so did my 4 other friends. lots of kids had to take it during the summer.bring a recorder
worse guy ever.. doesnt know how to do math at all since he calculates grades wrong. doesnt know how to teach anat. at all.. if you have him for any sci. class drop immediately
DO NOT ATTEND CLASS. ochs talks to himself. i had him for biochem and ana 1. got a B+ in biochem and A- in ana but not beucase he taught me anything, beucause i raped the book. JSUT STUDY YOURSELF. HES GETTING PAID TO TALK TO HIMSELF
this guy ruined my whole summer..he really ****s people over..he sucks at biochem...and he cant teach anatomy for life either..his tests are completely ambiguous doesnt tell us what to focus on just reads powerpts...just reads them doesnt explain****!had to drop the class wish i had choosen a block with wurpel or balbi instead... shouldnt teach if u dont care.
STAY AWAY!.. hard teacher, tells you like 18 chapters will be on the midterm and doesnt tell you wat to focus on, basically you gotta study the whole book. Final is cumulative, if you can find old exams of his because then your screwed!
OMG, Prof Ochs can’t teach at all. Attended every class but it was pretty much useless. His exams are extremely difficult and very detailed. Talks a lot and it is nearly impossible to know everything he says in class. Please donÂ’t take him, stay away from him as far as possible, and switch from his class if you can—do yourself a favor.
I dont know what everyone's problem is. He is one of the easiest teachers at St. John's. Aced the midterm and final with minimal studying. Notes are clear and concise. Would be silly not to take him.
his biochm class was the easiest class ever. the other teachers were wack and covered a ton more material. studied 2 hrs total for the final and got an A for the semester. also curves well
Those who said it was easy had it easy-they had access to old tests through their frats/sors. For all others, it was brutal. It is NOT easy at all. This man is not helpful, is mean to all students, does not allow you to even chew gum or go to the bathroom. Doesn't tell you what to focus on for tests. Went to office hours and refused to help anyone
I don't know what peoples problem is with this guy. He is one of the easier Biochem teachers you can take. Just study your notes and a little of the textbook and you'll be set. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

He really does have a quirky personality. The first half of the semester is slower and some stuff is review so do well on the midterm. The latter half gets crazy hard. Memorize the notes from class bc that's what he thinks is the most important. Write everything down! Midterm, final (very hard), and a few pop quizzes (counts as bonus points).
run away!! this guy is horrible, u cant ask him anything...power points are useless...n final is cumulative with like 26 chapters
This guy has absolutely no business being a teacher. Half the time his back is to the class looking at power points he didn't even write and the rest of the time you can't even hear him. Talks down to students and basically puts as little work as possible into helping us out. His info conflicts with what you learn in lab so watch out for that.
no point coming to class...2 tests 1 midterm, 1 final thats ALL final is cumulative
this NEEDS updating. hes a little uptight about interrupting class but as for the 1 midterm and 1 final they are straightfoward. do practice tests. his tests are basic concepts so just get the idea of things and youll be fine. go to class! he used some ques from an inclass prac test on the final!
He's really a nice prof and theres 1 midterm and 1 final and the questions r all from the powerpoints. Dont go to class just Study the slides and there's ur A
Do not ask him what he'll focus on exams, he will not answer that question. Has the same nonchalant attitude in class. However, he is knowledgeable about the material. Midterm and Final were not so bad if you read the textbook. Do the online practice questions from the website that accompanies the textbook to study for exams.
not a bad teacher, but tests can get pretty tough for biochem...try to get the old stuff, its VERY helpful
Dr. Ochs is a good professor who teaches well and makes things clear. He is willing to go over things if you don't understand and has a small sense of humor. This class is really hard but you only need to study what he teaches. Take good notes and try to record lectures. He's easier than the other other professors for biochem. Good luck
by far the worst teacher i ever had... rude, not smart and overall a terrible human being.
Hes not as bad as everyone says he is, he just has a different way of teaching than most people. he talks really fast and it gets really confusing. he draws alot on the board and is pretty boring. if you have old exams, then you're good, but if you dont, pay attention! it actually helps! people who failed didn't study much.
despite my personal issues with the decision he made regarding the midterm, he is actually an intelligent man. If you go to class, and ask questions- you will know the material. simple as that. the questions on the exams are not difficult, if you memorize the slides for the chapters and understand the material- you will do well.
Best professor in SJU hands down...hes clear, easy and you will get the best education with this man as your teacher...people who did bad are those who study a week before...just like everyone does...bring a tape recorder his lectures are gold its like he is speaking the answers from the exam
Useless to study text book. He asked Qs on detail of the detail. Bring RECORDER to write down every word he said. Half of his biochem class drop out. Remaining half barely passing. He makes his own test, lots of errors.
He's a really good teacher. You have to put a lot of work in though, because the subject is hard. And good notes help a lot because anything he mentions in class is fair game on tests. The tests were pretty difficult but he curves and grades very fairly.
He's a great professor. He knows what he's talking about, very intelligent. He's welcome to answer your questions. If you come to class prepared, and read the textbook thoroughly and study it, you will do fine. His lectures will make sense. Yes it's a lot of info but it's definitely doable. I enjoyed the class :)
Just not that good. Fair midterm. Impossible final.
This was his first time teaching D&D Med Chem. Overall he was pretty good. Slides were straightforward and his questions pretty much came from the slides. Med Chem geniuses said his explanations were overly simplistic and devoid of true Med Chem knowledge, but for people like me who really struggle with chemistry, it was a nice change of pace.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER. He can't teach and I NEVER complain about professors. He goes on and on about things and does not explain clearly. Midterm and Final had questions out of nowhere. The book he wrote himself was just terrible with so many typos I couldn't read one page without getting frustrated.
AWFUL! JUST AWFUL! Rude, boring, and makes test questions from the tiniest details you would never remember. Run while you still can....
He is very good in fundamentals of biochem and molecular biology
Hardest class i've ever taken in my entire class. Yes the subject itself is difficult, but he makes it insanely hard. I studied the textbook and his notes, and i got a c- ONLY bc of his very generous curve. I don't get why he isn't adjusting his teaching if so many students struggle to pass. It's cruel.
For A&PI he's alright. Read the textbook. If you show up to class, beware, he's super ocd/picky, he doesn't tolerate eating, talking, or getting up in the middle of class and will call you out. Basically just sit there and try not to breathe too hard. Your grade consists of the midterm and final, all mc
I HATE THIS GUY. Don't bother studying anything aside from his slides because he will test on things he teaches even if they go against actual theory. You don't have to attend class, just memorize his powerpoints and you'll do fine. Don't expect explanations outside of class though.
He's not a bad professor but he essentially teaches off PPT slides which he sends you anyway. A combination of that and reading the textbook will help you do well. He doesn't like when you get up in the middle of class so be wary of that. Come to class because sometimes there's random free point quizzes.
Go to every class because he gives random extra point quizzes. A lot of people don't show up to the class which means they missed out on extra points on their final grade. There are only two tests a final and midterm. Study his powerpoints and do questions from quizlet. All his questions are online. Don't read textbook that's a waste of time.
Terrible man terrible professor. Reads directly off the slides. I recommend coming to class only because he sometimes gives EC quizzes. only midterm and final. All the questions are from quizlet but reading the txt helps alot. just read about the topics in his powerpoint. Final is cumulative but there was only about 10 questions from the midterm.
Doesn't give notes. Teaches by speaking about the chapters in his textbook very vaguely. Will draw a couple structures on the board with a few words to describe it but that's as far as it goes for notes. Even reading his textbook is absolutely useless. Please, PLEASE avoid at all costs if you care about your sanity.
If I were you, I'd switch out. None of his lectures ever make sense & his tests were near impossible. He wrote his own textbook and all his exams were cumulative. The textbook did nothing to help & I spent WEEKS pouring over the book before every exam. Majority of the class (if not the entire class) failed his exams each time. Horrible experience.
. I had to teach myself most of the time, but I read the textbook and went to class. I think I would have benefitted if he made powerpoints instead of writing on the board. His tests are doable if you study hard, but the final was impossible. He curves at the end. He gives an extra credit quiz. I suggest going to the tutor .
The people complaining are something special. This guy gives a 17 POINT CURVE on your final average. That means if you really earned a 73, youll still get an A. On top of that, he adds an extra point so that no one misses the next grade by one point. If that wasnt enough, he counts the quiz as extra credit, up to 5pts. You really cant complain.
Take him if you want to learn, dont take him if you want an easy A. He isn't the best but I'd still take him again. Also curves like crazy
Course comprised of two exams 35% and 65% The exams fail to give students a way to show whether or not they know the course material and didn't reflect the big picture of the metabolic pathways covered in the course. A curve is given to compensate since the class average was below passing.
Class consists of extra credit quiz, midterm (35%), and final (65%). Requires you to not only attend class to pick up on comments made throughout the lecture but also to read through the textbook and take notes. Unless you have a passion for biochemistry, it takes many hours to pass the exam.
Not a responsible professor. Never reply your email. Whenever you asked questions during office hours, Ochs demonstrated indifference towards you. Final is far beyond the noted he gave in class. If you think yourself are a lucky man, can guess a lot of questions right, go ahead and take him. And, prepare for 6400 dollars to retake this course
This is the professor you don't want to take. He is all over the place with his lectures. He does not provide any guidance. There is a mini exam which is optional for extra credit and he also gives a midterm and a final. Beware! he will completely surprise you with his final by giving the hardest test possible. His final goes into major detail. RIP
If you're taking this course, be prepared to learn absolutely n-o-t-h-i-n-g, take a midterm that counts 65% and a final that counts 35% and perhaps drop another 6K to take the course over again in the summer.
Class environment was rubbish, it's hands down the worst class experience I've had. Couldn't understand his chicken-scratch writing, only spits back textbook info, tests on small details - makes the tests more difficult than should be. Online resources taught better. A shame such an important class is taught so poorly.
The person whos grade was curved from 73 to 100 must be preaching for his own grade. Cant teach for life. It sucks that hes the only biochem professor for PHS department, Id suppose
As someone who truly works for their grade, I am disgusted by this class. That person that said if you get a 73 you get an A down below, that is FALSE! He curves because people bomb the final. You will not learn in this class and it becomes the biggest waste. Biochem is naturally hard, but this was ridiculous. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
One test is 25% and its stupidly easy. The next two are disgustingly hard and are 35% and 40%. Your grade is ONLY EXAMS. He asks masters level questions and when every student in the class gets multiple questions wrong, he thinks it's our fault. It'll ruin your GPA. You can be the hardest worker and nearly fail. DO. NOT. TAKE. HE SUCKS
RIDICULOUS! Prepare for a GPA drop. Three tests, the last two are BAD (the worst I've ever done on any exam). I told him I was having trouble and he laughed. He doesn't care about you or your grades and rushes you in office hours. You use his TB that has SO MANY TYPOS so he profits off of you. Worst professor I've ever had. DO. NOT. TAKE.
DO. NOT. TAKE. WORST GRADE ON MY TRANSCRIPT. STUPID TEXTBOOK WITH ERRORS (check the Amazon reviews). GET OUT IF YOU CAN. Asks test questions on small details not even in the textbook. Don't bother studying, go to Santacon or the St. Patty's Day parade instead...I swear you will do better. My friend did & got a B+..I stayed home, studied & got B- :/
Hands down, one of the worst teachers I had ever had. Never failed a class since elementary till now. I have to go summer school cause of this man.
What a horrible class this was, dropped everyones gpa heavily and grade is only 3 tests which are so difficult and every answers seems correct, the way class is taught is very different and you are expected to know everything from before
No other assignments besides exams. No other material or question form besides exam day means no form of proper preparation is really possible or practical. Can't expect students to just read every chapter and memorize every word and possible outcome for every topic, its impractical and embarrassing. Shameful excuse for a lack of effort.
This class with this professor will actually stress you out to the point where you don't know what to do with yourself. He expects you to put his class first and study every day for his class. There are only three exams with no sort of homework or other assignments that will help your grade. There is no sort of compassion from this professor.
80% of the PHS/science professors at SJU is absolute garbage at teaching and he is no exception. Grade is based on 3 exams; the class average is always 40's/50's, so he curves instead of giving test questions that make sense. Uses his textbook that has typos/difficult to understand. Exams are like master's level questions. DO NOT TAKE FOR YOUR GPA
1) Grades are made up of only 3 exams, each exam worth towards your final grade increase. 2) No homework, no practice, no nothing: too lazy to even give another practice exam - said the first one was to just show how the exams are like. 3) Literally said it was the student's fault if they can't seem to understand the lessons: class avg: 40-50.
DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES TAKE HIS CLASS. Never in my life have I gotten such a low grade. There are no homework assignments, no notes, just him reading from his textbook (which has many mistakes). If you ask a question during class, he actually gets annoyed. Even the curve wont save your grade. A waste of time.
Worst professor I've ever had. Avoid at all costs, but if you have to take him start studying as soon as the class begins. Tests are insanely hard and based on small details from his textbook. Lectures don't really help. Sad to say but you might want to prepare yourself for a possible GPA drop. I studied so hard and still got a C :(
This class caused me so much mental anguish. This professor gets genuinely annoyed when students ask questions. He offers no PPTs. Avgs are in the 40s and yet he seems unfazed. This class is purely self-study and his exams are impossible. Prepare for a GPA drop. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!! Drop while you can & take at a later semester. Goodluck if u take.
Dr. Ochs is not everyones favorite but if youre a person who likes relying on the textbook rather than useless PowerPoints then Dr. Ochs is your guy. Man is straight to the point and very organized with his curricular. Go to his office hours, trust me. Read the book and understand it and you will be fine.
Yall need to relax because this man curves CRAZYYYYY. People do bad because they simply do not read the textbook or even try to understand the material. They just come to class and complain about him. I did extremely well because everyone in the class did terrible. Show up, read the book, understand the material, boom, A for the class.
Class is graded on just 2 midterms and the final. He used to do only a midterm and final but he told me in office hours how students werent doing well so he gives three tests now. Man is so nice in person. People complain but arent willing to do the work. Just read, understand the material, and you will pass with a descent grade. OCHS FOR LIFE!!
All you have to do in this class is read his book and understand the material. That simple.
The goat
You want a simple A? Dont bother taking him. You want to learn biochemistry and actually understand concepts that will be embedded into your brain? Take Dr. Ochs!! I can write you all the mechanisms of Krebs cycle right now. Dont be shy, take Dr. Ochs!
Take this man if you want to actually learn things for the MCAT
You want to pass?? Read the book and show up to his office hours and ask questions. If you want an easy way out, do yourself a favor and take someone else.
This man is so funny. Don’t let these reviews throw u off. Would take this class 100% again. Didn’t get the grade I wanted because I simple didn’t put an effort.
All the previous green ratings within the past few months are fake lol. Lie harder :)) terribad professor pumping fake ratings
this man does not test you on his lectures
ignore the fake green reviews he trolling or someone
His tests are mainly based on the textbook. Do not spend too much time reading his lecture slides because they will not be tested that much.
Not as bad as they say. His lectures are fine but not great. Lots of people dont do well because they dont bother showing up to class and dont study well enough. But in all fairness, it is a hard topic and he grades on only three tests. No extra credit. Go to his office hours. He curves tests. Read the textbook.
Dr. Ochs is an amazing professor! he is a little mean but going to his office hours was great for my grade. Definitely will take him again.
runnnnn! pharmacy program is already hard enough and he only makes it worse. he wont pass you even if ur 0.14 away.
fellas we at glycolysis rn and it is joever
Class subject is very hard and he doesn't use any powerpoints or google slides. You need to use his textbook to study pretty much. Overall very hard class but not impossible,
Shao Jr must be on here writing fake 5 star reviews- nobody shills for Sh*t Johns to the extent he does. Oh dont forget guys like this are bff with his old man
He wont pass you even if youre 0.14 away--> thats Sh*t Johns for you. The deans need your money so they can get their yachts. Hope they all end up like the Titanic.
Get the old tests kiddies!!! Buy them if you have to! Guys like this will say its your fault you didnt pass their effed up exams; hes the same guy who will say the japanese military did nothing wrong and that its the pearl harbor victims' fault because they didnt look up at the sky.
The textbook he wrote is bs just like he is. Who he think he is, jk rowling? Your best bet is to swap your major and get out of Sh*t Johns asap. Your mental and physical health will thank me.
Not bad, I actually learned a lot in this class. Will miss him. Wish he taught more classes!
Professor Ochs' class is challenging but rewarding. His textbook is the key - read it thoroughly and attend class. Unstuck study was a lifesaver for me too. Overall, a tough but worthwhile course.
Hes retiring after screwing countless students over the years- thats how he made a living and earned his fortune. Hope he enjoys all that $$$ he got from ruining the lives of so many students, but dont worry yall, God will try him one day.
