he is the best!!!
van ness is one tall glass of water
This was a very fun class. I didn't think it would be but it was the best learning experience I had thus far. The executive summary isn't bad either. He teaches you a lot and most of the learning is not textbook based.
Ray is awesome, he actually cares that you learn something without killing you with it. He is very helpful if you ask him for help. I think he would honestly do just about anything to make sure his students succeed.
i loved him! He is such a nice adorable man. You'll love going to his class. The semester project is very difficult. Keep up with the deadlines and you'll be fine
If you are taking this class..definitely take it with Dr. Van Ness.. He is extremely helpful and really really cares and wants to see everyone do well!
He is the creator of this class and therefore teaches it perfectly. Do not be intimidated by the paper. He offers a lot of help and outlines how to write it in the textbook. I have heard bad things about other Professors for 481Y...but Dr. Van Ness is a great teacher and a great guy.
he is sucha kewl dood but i wish he didn't make us spend all that dough on txtbooks, especially the one he wrote himself. after all, he said he retired at age 40 and is just teaching for the love of teaching. he should have gave us to the txtbook he wrote as a freebie.
he is a cool guy and i would make him my bff in a heartbeat but he had me and my friend sent to the albany police station in handcuffs by UPD cuz me and my buddy tried to save some cash out of necessity in these hard econ times by sharing the software. now i gotta misdemeanor on my perm record. but i agree it was totally my fault and i deserved it.
i dont know how poor that kid who said his class was expensive is but the total cost i spent was only $120 (70 text, 20 ebook, and 30 to print the paper) I spent $190 in my tax class so yeah This is a chill class that u pretty much just get an A in if you have any common sense. Paper graded solely on length, so dont gota worry there. Prof is great.
I loved Dr. Van Ness! The class was challenging, but not impossible with the help of Ray. He's extremely approachable and tries to keep your interest in somewhat dry material. The 50 paged paper is not difficult to write, just time consuming. One of the best professors at UAlbany!
Absolute Best!!! Great Class!! Don't be scared by the professional summary its fun!!
The best Professor I have had in my 4 years at the University. The way he is able to effectively communicate the content, makes the class informative and enjoyable. He is also the type of Professor that truly wants everyone to succeed. He looks out for his students. Lastly, his practical business knowledge helped a ton! Highly recommended
HE IS AMAZINGGG!!!. He is very funny and helpful. He even lets you call his house phone if you need help. The semester project was long but he has clear instructions for it. He also gives you a whole bunch of extra credit in class and even on exams. If you can take him for upper level management because it is his book and his project.
Dr. Van Ness is a superior teacher. He cares about each and everyone of his students. He is always willing to help any student succeed in his class. Yes the semester paper is challenging and tedious, but he will set you up for success, you just have to put in the work. You can't help but enjoy your time in Dr. Van Ness' classroom.
Dr. Van Ness is one of the best teachers I have had throughout my academic career. Dr. Van Ness provides adequate instruction in class to make the work easily done and a great learning experience. He gets to know the names of all of the students and truly cares about the current and future endeavors of students. The textbook is great for the tests!
Dr. Van Ness does a great job in this class. He made his own textbook and accompanying software tailored to class projects. It is easy follow and understand, even for the business novice. He teaches a lot from his successful experience in the real world. I enjoyed the class even though there is a lot of work. You should pick his class if you can.
Dr.Van Ness is the best professor I've had at UAlbany. He is very funny, always makes class interesting, and is very laid back and approachable. Van Ness will help you with anything, and will write you a recommendation if asked for. Word of advise for anyone who takes BGMT 481W start the semester project early and the class will be easy.
Dr. Van Ness is an outstanding teacher and even better man. He brings a great energy and sense of humor to every class which makes it very enjoyable. He is great at helping students when they need anything and always has a smile. This class is awesome and Dr. Van Ness is the best professor I've had at this University.
Dr.Van Ness explains the course material so well you simply can't go wrong. He is there to help you at all times. He's a very intelligent man with a lot of experience. You rarely get bored in his class because his lectures are very engaging and inspiring. Do not wait till last minute to start the 50-page paper!!!Definitely take this professor!
Dr. Van Ness is one of the best professors in the Business School. He keeps his lectures exciting with his sense of humor, and he is always willing to help his students with any concerns they have. There is a lot you can learn from him. I would recommend you take his section for BMGT 481, as he never fails to keep the class interested/intrigued.
BMGT 481 is a great course and Dr. VanNess puts in a lot of work to keep the course and the professors that teach it running smoothly. He is always ready and willing to help you with anything and is really dedicated to making the students love his course. I would definitely recommend taking the course with him and not the other professors!
This guy is a boss. He literally makes sure you do well. If you're a bad student and haven't done anything with your life and end up in his class, he will motivate you to do well. I plan on sending my paper to the company I wrote about so write about a company you are interested in. Once again THIS GUY IS A BOSS.
Dr. Van Ness is a great guy. He really cares about his students and wants everyone to succeed. Extremely helpful and approachable. Highly recommend taking his section.
Dr. Van Ness has been my favorite teacher here at SUNY. He's very helpful & is always available when needed. He cares a lot about his students & is very inspiring. He's a fair grader if you do the work & is always willing to give extra credit. I'm now doing research to complete my honors thesis & I couldn't think to pick anyone else to help me.
Dr. Van Ness is a great resource to the business school here at Albany. Van Ness makes lectures enjoyable and adds in humor to brighten the learning environment. The class structure is constructed fairly and there are opportunities for extra credit. The debates are great and fun. Van Ness Is very approachable and helpful. Would recommend to anyone
His class was challenging but rewarding in the sense that he made the material incredibly relate-able. His sense of humor kept me both grounded and laughing as I succeeded in the capstone course. He has a genuine care for his students and it really shows. Be sure to take his class, you'll learn a lot and if you put in the effort you'll do do well
Dr. Raymond Van Ness is quite possibly the most charismatic, passionate, and devoted professor the Business School has to offer. He will change your college career for the best. His dynamic stature and humor are unparalleled by any other. His works have been cited by theorists, MBA students, Ph.D. professors, and scholars across the globe.
Professor is great, fair and respectable. But here are some real advice for the project. IF YOURE GOING TO PUSH IT, HONESTLY THE LATEST YOU SHOULD START IS 2 WEEKS BEFORE IT IS DUE. and this is counting the sleepless nights and daily visit to the library. Have the PSC done before hand and go over it with him. the introduction part is the hard part.
Highly respected professor who cares a lot about the course and his students. The semester project is not difficult if you pick a company that you are interested in and follow his directions. One of the most applicable/relevant courses in the business school.
A professor who I really respect and who obviously cares a lot about each student. The semester project, while daunting, is very doable as long as you pick companies you're actually interested in, and don't wait till the last minute, and even then it's doable. Overall, a great class and a great professor!
One of, if not, the best professor I have had during my business program at Albany. He values respect and integrity. Show up to class, have some laughs, follow his guidelines and instructions, and you'll get an A. Tough course - but he acknowledges hard work and effort. He sets you up for success, but you have to put effort and work for it.
keep up on the textbook readings and start the project early! he's super nice, helpful, and caring. tons of extra credit opportunities and a pretty lax grader but he wants to see you've put work in. all the 481 classes are the same content and Van Ness is your best bet.
He is an interesting professor, but his class is a lot of work as it is a writing intensive course. There are lots of group projects and a 100 page final project. The class requires a 96 to get an A which makes it very difficult to do well. He offers a lot of extra credit which is nice, but it is still a lot of work to get a good grade.
Van Ness is a nice professor. You can tell that he loves his job and the students. As a Marketing student, he helped me understand the accounting aspects of the semester project which was helpful. Take advantage of his office hours as you begin to work on the PSC as well as the extra credit he offers throughout the semester.
This class is a very tough class, but it's the class Ray designed. There is not a lot of new material introduced, the class takes everything that you've learned pursuing your degree so far. Ray really cares about the students and wants to make sure you succeed. There are some big assignments, but Ray is very generous with his scoring.
Ray is one of the best professor and humans out there. This class was mandatory but everyone told me to take with him. He has nothing but the upmost respect for everyone, and is willing to go beyond any means to make sure every student passes. This was not a hard class to get an A in if you are willing to try and be active in class.
Ray is the best professor at UAlbany. His knowledge is amazing and he is the most down to earth guy you will meet. He wants everyone to do well and give everyone a chance to do week. He honestly is an amazing guy and I wish I could take more of his classes
Ray has been one of the most incredible professors I have ever had. His genuine interest in the success of his students is truly refreshing, and simultaneously sparks a desire to succeed from the student perspective. By watching the level of effort he displays, I as a student feel obligated to reciprocate the respect and hardwork.
Ray is the best teacher I've had at the University thus far. He cares about his students, is always available during his office hours, and he will help you with your project. Take this class with him if you can, he is a real gem.
Professor Van Ness is by far one of the very best professors I've had at the University. He genuinely cares about all of his students & just wants to see us succeed. He would go to the ends of the earth to be there for his students and that right there speaks measures about who he is as a person. Take a class with him, you won't regret it!
I was so nervous about taking this course but Ray made it so enjoyable! I learned so much from this course, not just from the course material but how to truly balance my workload as there a lot of deliverables in this class. Prof Van Ness is so kind and cares so much about his students. I never left his class without a smile on my face.
Best college professor ever
Great and super fair professor if you come to class, participate, and do all the assignments. Always responded to emails and answered questions fast. Dont wait too long to start your PDE.
One of my favorite profs in my academic career. I learned a lot in this class that is applicable to the real world. I felt that prof Van Ness really cared for our wellbeing and wanted us to understand content. He made the class fun and engaging. Make sure you stay on top of your PDE and that you look at all the helpful materials on the website!
Professor VanNess adapted to the online teaching format seamlessly. From day one, he explained how challenging this course would be but ensured the class that he would guide us every step of the way. I left this class with a great amount of invaluable knowledge that I will be able to use for the rest of my life. Great learning experience overall.
I feel bad for you if you do not get the privilege to be in Professor Ray's class. As a business major, I was dreading this course due to the semester long project but Prof. Ray turned this into my favorite course I took at Albany. I HIGHLY recommend him, he is personable, caring and a professional mentor always wiling and wanting to help.
Professor VanNess is one of the sweetest, most kind professors I have had at UAlbany. He cares about your well-being and success in the class. You are guaranteed an A if you take notes. All tests require you to write a paragraph on each class. Start your PDE paper at the beginning of the semester so you are not rushed. You'll love his class!
Professor Van Ness is the most caring, passionate, and genuine professor you will have. He cares about his students and their success more than ANY other professor out there. He's always encouraging students to reach out for help and is extremely responsive, giving you the help you need. Overall, amazing professor and person!
Prof. Van Ness is one of the best professors I have had. He went the extra mile this semester to make sure our virtual class was just as welcoming and engaging as an in-person class would have been. You will learn so much from completing the PDE and Prof. Ray is ready to help you every step of the way. Overall amazing prof and very valuable class!
Professor Van Ness is the BEST professor and this is the best class that I have ever taken at UAlbany. He is extremely kind, attentive, helpful, and cares about each of his students. Make sure to: start PDE early, and take notes. I was SO scared for this course and he gives everything needed to succeed. I wish I could take this course again!
Professor Ray is the best professor I have had at UAlbany. He goes above and beyond to help his students throughout the course. He is genuine, kind, compassionate and very respected by his students. I am so grateful to have taken the capstone course with him as he made it much easier to succeed. Take this course with him if you have the chance.
Ray created the class and is a great guy ! As long as you show up to class and do the work you should be fine. The Capstone project is a bit rough due to the size of it, but Ray gives resources and an example that makes it way easier to do !
Great Professor, super sweet, you will learn a lot from him. The website for the senior capstone was made to help students succeed so always follow instructor as the professor wants you to do well. Dr. Van Ness spent years designing the book and PSC so he knows what he is doing. Pay attention in class as topics covered will help beyond college
Professor Van Ness gave me one of my best learning experiences in my four years. Though the class was very rigorous, Professor Van Ness made sure to explain every task fully and guide everyone along the way. You truly get back what you put into the class, so if you work hard, participate, and meet all deadlines, you will thrive.
By far the best professor I've ever had. Extremely nice and helpful.
The best professor to take the capstone course with, he invented the software and the textbook every other mgmt professor uses. He's the sweetest old professor and knows his stuff. Lectures every class but makes them entertaining. If you ever need help he is constantly offering his advice and will guide you. Get to know him as a person he's great!
Professor Van Ness is an incredible educator and an expert in this field. He makes the lectures entertaining, is always accessible for any questions, and loves helping his students and seeing them succeed. This class may seem intimidating at first, but if you put in the effort and listen to his lectures carefully, you will do great on the PDE.
He genuinely cares for his students and will help you with whatever you need outside of class. He answers his emails quickly and wants all of his students to succeed. One of the best professors I have had at UAlbany.
Good professor that makes the workload of the capstone seem manageable! Always available to help and give pointers. Tests can be confusing due to poorly worded questions but overall don't matter as long as you do well on the PDE.
Professor VanNess is the best professor at albany. He is able to make an academically challenging course fun and stress-free. You leave the class having learned what you need to for the real-world. He is always available outside of class for anything you need. The intimidating 50+ page paper was less stressful because Ray was there every step.
Of my 4 years at Albany I've never had a professor care about their students as much as Professor Van Ness. Ray truly wants his students to understand the concepts he teaches, and will go out of his way to ensure the best experience possible. This is a class you will be happy you took, and I plan to stay in touch with Ray well beyond graduation.
A fantastic professor and guy! I would definitely retake this class, he cares about his students like they are his own family.
Ray is the best professor available to take the class with. There are many opportunities available for extra credit, and he always makes himself available to help students. Start your papers early! Ray is a very sweet guy who cares deeply about his students. He always helps and appreciates the effort students put into their work. Great professor.
With the semester long capstone project, it is easy to get overwhelmed. However, Professor Ray makes sure to help in every way that he can. Always motivates students do their best and be kind. Shows respect to students which is reciprocated back by students. You can tell he wants everyone to succeed in his class and in life in general.
Truly cares about his students & shows it. Gives many ops for students to speak with him, as well as for extra credit. His lectures & textbook(which is his own) are very student friendly and not complex reads at all! His 2 tests are a little wordy but are fine if you read the textbook. The thesis takes up a good portion of the grade, but is not hard
Professor Van Ness is the ideal professor in every way. He cares for his students and spends as much time outside of class available to students as possible. Two exams (that he thoroughly prepares you for) and the final project which he will walk you through step by step and help you whenever you need it.
Ray Van Ness is one of the best professors I've ever had! He truly cares about all of his students and is there to help them succeed not only in this class but in life as well. My only piece of advice would be to start the paper early and take 481W with Ray, it will make the semester exponentially better!
The professor is excellent. He is always available to help you understand class assignments and topics. He doesn't grade hard. Start the final project on time and you will be fine.
By far one of my favorite classes at UAlbany. Coming into this class, I was quite nervous about the Semester Long Project (PDE). The PDE is meant to be challenging and should reflect on your four years at UAlbany. However, Ray is there every step of the way as he truly cares for his students and wants them to succeed. Can't recommend him enough!
Great Professor... simple as that. Willing to help out anyway he can and gives very easy assignments. 10/10
I have never met a professor who cares as much as Ray does. The class is a capstone course so you need to pull out all of the information that you have learned over the years here to really get the most out of it but if you like business this is an outstanding course. The semester project is intense but very interesting.
Ray Van Ness is one of UAlbany's best professors. He shows up each class with a strong motivation to pass on knowledge and wisdom to the next generation. He adores all his students and takes any time to reach out and support you in your efforts for his class. I highly recommend taking his class.
Professor Ray is amazing! Class requires work that, if managed correctly, should cause no stress. DO NOT PROCRASTINATE! Have questions? ASK! He will answer with a smile and a witty joke. He teaches about the real world, which is rare! You'll quote him constantly, like I do! Everything a great teacher should be, and more! Easy class if you try!
Class is a waste of time. He makes students buy his own textbook which has spelling and grammatical mistakes throughout. Extremely outdated PPT lectures and textbook material which are irrelevant in the real world. It teaches really basic stuff and it is concerning that this is a senior-level class when it should be a freshman-level class.
Prof Van Ness was spectacular. This is the capstone course for a business degree so it was a lot of work but that should be expected. It was a lot of writing and you must participate but Ray was very accessible and he showed how much he cares for his students. He really wants you to do well and will work hard for you. It was a great experience.
Ray is the most gracious and passionate professor I have ever had. We also had multiple extra credit opportunities. He was always available to help every step of the way. He truly cares about every student and wants to see them succeed. The course is writing intensive, but he provides everything needed to do well in the course.
This is one of the final class for business major seniors. The course cover a lot of material and have a semester long project to write (mine is ~200 pages with an excel file, double space), so don't sleep on that. Overall, the class is informative and the professor will always be there if you ever need help. Super helpful and generous!
I took BMGT 481 with Professor Van Ness and it was one of the best class I ever had. Probably one of the class that I never skipped. Professor is really chill and caring and he is always there to help. You can ask him 100 of questions and he will still be there to help. The lectures were amazing. He is one of the best professor ualbany ever had.
VanNess is an incredible professor that has a true passion for the course content and his students. I looked forward to going to his class because he took the time to connect with us and show support/guidance as we worked through our capstone paper. He is always available for questions or a quick convo. The most impactful class I have taken at UA.
Professor Raymond Van Ness was one of my favorite professors and guided me through the process of completing my thesis project for the school of business. Ray made it clear that he was there to help you and gave me all of the tools and attention that I needed to do my best work. He also wrote me a great letter of recommendation after I graduated.
Ray is one of those people who were born to be a professor. He holds every student in the highest regard, understanding, and patience. You won't regret taking his class
He is a great professor and is always willing to help! I would highly recommend him. His test are difficult if you don't read the textbook.
he made people to buy the textbook he created, and this class is so unusefull, i dont know why he create this class for and you have to write a min 50 page essay to compare two business. exm? Sir ARE YOU HAVING TOO MUCH TIME IN YOUR LIFE?
I was really nervous to be taking this class for obvious reasons, but on the first day of class, (almost) all of my fears disappeared because I could tell how caring of an instructor Dr. Van Ness is. He is always willing to help outside of class hours and is the exact type of instructor you'd want to be teaching a capstone class. :)
Professor Van Ness is an amazing teacher. He truly cares about his students and wants to see everyone do well. He is always giving you opportunities to improve your grade and will sit down with you if you need help with any projects in the class. I would strongly reccomend taking this difficult class with Professor Van Ness.
Professor Van Ness is one of the best professors I've had during my undergraduate at UAlbany. He is very nice, caring, and always wants the best for his students. On top of that he provides many opportunities throughout the semester to earn extra credit. He also curves exam grades by 10-20 points. He is always available to help and he's a great guy
Professor Van Ness was the most passionate and respectful professor I have had during my undergraduate studies. If you go to class, pay attention, and put in effort, you will have no issues succeeding in his class. He has designed the course and its resources very well to make things comprehendible and accessible for students.
Great professor, videos are very informative would definitely take again
Professor Van Ness is one of the most kind and supportive professors I've had at UAlbany. He truly wants the best for his students. If you attend class, work hard, and show respect, he'll go above and beyond to help you succeed both academically and professionally. I highly recommend taking his course!
Professor Van Ness is a very kind and caring teacher. The paper is the most important assignment for the class, so don't wait until the last minute to write it. Work on it in small batches over the entire semester and it won't be too bad. The exams can be tough so read the textbook and attend and pay attention to each lecture.
Professor Van Ness goes above and beyond for students and is very accommodating to students' needs.
Professor Van Ness is a not only a great professor who is willing to help with class materials, but a great person. He has office hours to help anyone who is struggling, and also helps students with job references and recommendations. He has recently help me, and can't say enough about how he is as a person. I recommend taking him as a professor.
Professor Van Ness is not only a great professor, but a great person. He recently helped me with a job recommendation and reference. On top of that, I had him as a professor and he goes above and beyond to make sure each student is successful. He has office hours to help students and wants the best for them. I recommend taking him as a professor.
Professor Van Ness is one of the most understanding and kind professors at UAlbany. He deeply cares about his students and is always there to help! The paper is the most important project of the semester so start it early. I definitely recommend to take his class!
