Best entomology professor. Take her for online, you won't regret! nicest prof and class is very doable and actually not hard. Lab isnt bad either if you just study for the practical and collect the bugs. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!
Excellent professor. I was not excited about taking the class and have no interest in the subject, but she made class interesting and I learned a lot.
great professor, very helpful and loves interacting with her students! Very sweet in office hours. Just go over the lectures and go through the "readings" she assigns for key terms, and you'll do fine. i got a B+ but would have easily gotten an A or A- had I known how to study for the first test.
dont take this class if you want an A. you have to get at least a 94 on every assignment. more work than any other class i've taken at UF. You have to collect 55 insects which eats up a great deal of time. This semester, I spent more time on this class than on organic chemistry and I still did better in orgo.def not worth the A-/B+ if ur pre-med.
Dr. Baldwin is one of the nicest, brightest professors I ever had, but her class is not easy. It's not hard to pass, but it is really hard to get an A. Lectures make the readings easier to understand, but some details on the test are only found in the readings. If you need help, go see her, she's not great about emails. Good, but hard, class.
Take it online. Professor is really nice and helpful. Pretty easy just watch the lectures and fill out the study guide. Also be sure to do the journal assignments, they are easy and help your grade. You don't need the textbook.
Dr. Baldwin is super sweet. Her lectures are NOT boring, thank goodness! Her exams were just like any other science exam, study well and get in the 80, know your stuff and get an A. She was so thoughtful for other students' exams that she postponed exams and made online arrangements too! Overall, even if you have no interest in ento, class was good
She explains the material really well and she is SO NICE. If you put in any effort, you'll do well. The only drawback is that she is slow in getting grades back.
Was a course known to be easy- Fall '11 was the 1st semester she taught the course. She made it more difficult than it used to be/should be for a 1000 level class. Get smokin' notes and really study them if you want an A. The EC helps too. Most things she said we "should know" in class never appeared on the exams- not much incentive to go to class
She is the new bugs and people professor. If you heard it was easy and fun, the person you are talking to took it from Barfield. Ever since she started teaching it in Fall 11 it has sucked. She makes it much more difficult than a typical 1000 level course.
She is very interested in Entomology and tries her best to share her enthusiasm in lecture. However, exams were HARD. Only about 10% of the study guides was actually on the exams. READ the book and deff buy the smokin notes. I did and managed a B, but deff not an easy peasy bio class. But no the hardest. And do ALL the extra credits! You'll need em.
She is a good person. However, she makes this class way way too hard. I ate those time-consuming study guides and read the material that needed to be done and I still managed a B. It is true about the guy who says that he did better in orgo because this class was that demanding and difficult I hated it.
For the online section of this course there are three exams and some short journal assignments throughout the semester. Tests were very doable if you watched the online lectures. Readings from the text are assigned but the tests did not focus on the readings. Getting an "A" is very doable.
Took online, got an A. For the lecture, fill out the study guides, usually 1/2 the q's came from the book. The lab was straight to the point and fair. I did spend the ENTIRE semester working on the collection and only got a B-. I recommend getting the collection over with right away, it is very time consuming. The professor and TA were very nice.
Great professor! Very enthusiastic too. Always willing to help students. If you are taking bugs and people, I uploaded all of the study guides on quizlet. You're welcome. Overall a very interesting class.
Super easy gen. ed. Very cool professor. She's interested in her students and helpful. I passed this class with an A even though I didn't go after the first exam(though the information was much more interesting when I attended). The exams are the same as the reviews. Good luck!
Nice teacher. Class is my favorite this term. More interested now then when I started. The insect collection is difficult to do in the colder months of the year. Careful not to take in the winter. really enjoy learning about insects.
Nothing you studied for was on the test. Nothing matched. Nothing on the outlines was worth learning and filling out. Nothing was clear. It honestly was the worst class I have ever had.
If you're looking for an Easy A in order, this is NOT the class to take. The test are ridiculously hard, and never adhere to the study guide (and those are way too long, 100 questions of which 25 will be taken). Do all the extra credit if you have any hope of getting a decent grade. I do not recommend ENY1001 with Dr. Baldwin.
If you're look for an easy A, this is not the class. The tests require A LOT of studying and memorizing plus a ton of reading. You can afford to miss a class or two as long as you get the notes from someone; she puts a majority of the powerpoints online anyways. Whenever a test came i felt like i hadn't learned enough to be prepared for it.
She was very kind and helpful. It's a great 1001 level class but requires more work then expected ( not a bad thing but definitely something that should be taken under consideration). The class requires you to work hard to earn your grade.
This class was not an easy A. If you follow along with the notes (she hints at some questions on the test in class), and if you study quizlet sets.. you'll do perfectly fine. Compared to most classes I took my senior year of highschool, this was easy. I took this in summer.
This class was NOT easy. The study guides contain so much information, you don't know where to begin to study. While the Bugge Faire was easy and the paper wasn't so bad, the class itself is hard. We had to learn about the bugs parts, class, scientific name, and much more. I would recommend this class for someone who is REALLY interested in bugs.
Class was way too much work for a 2 credit class. Wasn't too difficult but just a lot of work filling out the study guides etc. Study for the class and you'll do fine. Baldwin is pretty accommodating.
Baldwin's fatal flaw: forgetting that about 1% of people in her class are Entomology majors. It's difficult, I won't lie. The tests are 50% study guide (straight from book), 50% lecture. DON'T BAIL, BECAUSE: Extra credit, pal. If you do it all, you're golden. I ended with over a 100% in the class. It's time consuming but totally do-able, promise.
Rebecca Baldwin is a very passionate and enthusiastic teacher. You will learn so much from her. Her tests are very hard but she gives so much extra credit that an A is still very possible to get. I would recommend this class to anyone who needs a Gen Ed biology credit or is interested in bugs.
The class was super easy. She offers like 100 points of extra credit and the class is only worth 300 points, go figure. Easy A as long as you come to class and watch her lectures. If you skip class like me you'll end up with a B+ or a B. Exams come from the study guide that she provides and her lecture powerpoints.
I took the class hoping for an easy A, but I was mistaken. I didn't read any of the assigned materials, and had to thoroughly study for the exams seeing as her wording of the questions are tricky. Dr. Baldwin is very passionate about the subject. Make sure you do all of the extra credit, it will save your grade!
Ms. Baldwin was not helpful to me. She barely responded to my emails and did not give me any help when I asked how to study for the tests. Lectures are crazy long and very boring, study guides were long and had too much information, so you did not know where to start studying. Tests were hard, multiple choice and hard short essays. Do not take!
Baldwin really knows her stuff. Tons of easy extra credit opportunities. You really have to study in order to get an A in this class, but the material is easy to comprehend. Was actually a very fun class.
This was absolutely the worst class I have ever taken. I emailed the professor for clarification on test questions and never received a response. The Teaching Assistant runs everything and she is an extremely technical, inflexible, and unhelpful. I have never received below a B at UF and I am struggling in this class and the lab.
you can see her syllabus online but there is a lot of work in this class so i reccommed you to take it only with another easy A class. The TA is what grades everything! and she gets annoyed after emailing her so many questions. Other than that its manageable to do test are open book
Be prepared to do a ton of work, for very little credit (3), & to spend a lot of money. Books and materials needed will run $250+, and that's renting, not buying. Research projects require an insane amount of work & references. Group projects rely on members participating and if they don't you suffer. Combined w/ Grad class & more Grad level work
Professor Baldwin is a beyond amazing teacher! She has so much passion in what she teaches, she makes every bug seem extremely interesting. She is very engaging and does all she can to teach the students, such as cooking bugs. There is a ton of extra credit, too!! To pass the tests just answer the questions on the study guide, & attend any reviews!
Absolutely unclear about assignments, has numerous TA's and both the prof and the TA's (legit like 10 of them) are still unable to respond to emails, which is pretty important in an online class. If you can take any other class besides this one do it! She's cute about bugs but the worst professor as far as being professional and helpful.
Very unprofessional. Doesn't respond to emails, the TA didn't even have her email working correctly until mid semester.
I'd pass on this class entirely. Way too much work for two credits. Three group projects?! A bit much. Also, the professor and TA offer little to no feedback. Hard to get in touch with either. The tests are hard and do not cover anything on lengthy study guides given. Really ridiculous and wastes a lot of time.
The class I took was excessively heavy in homework and spending time filling out study guides. Professor Baldwin is fantastic! She loves what she does and is so knowledgeable. I took this course online, she provides online lectures that she has recorded that also have transcripts. She's very helpful in office hours.
I thought I would enjoy this class, but I did not. Baldwin is hilarious and enthusiastic about the subject but her tests are impossible and her study guides do not align with the tests. I got my first bad college grade in this class. Would not take.
I love Dr Baldwin! She made the class so interesting. There are a lot of cool activities in class like eating bugs or on one day she brings in some bugs. There is a ton of extra credit. The tests are so easy if you do the study guide and the practice tests, and there are a ton of good quizlets for the class. I never even read the book but made As.
Dr. Baldwin is a very caring and passionate professor. She always came to class eager to teach. Her exams are heavily based upon the study guides she assigns and her class lectures. If you feel unsure about specific topics its best you try to learn them because they will most likely be on the exam. There is 3 exams and they are non-cumulative.
Dr. Baldwin is the BEST. She is very passionate and has fun activities to promote learning, as well as extra credit. I loved this class so much that I took a class from her again this semester. The exams aren't difficult as long as you take notes and read the textbook.
I took this class and the lab online. I think online is easier in person because you can use your notes for tests, which are hard. Be prepared to study and work for a good grade in this class if you take it in person. If you are online, take notes on the power point and "command F" during the tests. Baldwin is sweet and really loves the class.
Took this online. It was interesting, the professors obviously love their subject, but most of your grade pends on difficult exams and a group project that she grades tough/no one got 100%. So, if you don't have every member helping to double check your work and participate, you will pay dearly. Bonus, 5 points extra credit. I died a little.
She's a sweet person. the tests barely match the study guides except for maybe two questions. It's 3 exams and a group project that takes a lot of time and no one got 100% (even after asking her for feed back). I was only able to reach her once and she sometimes isn't at her office hours. The TA grades papers harshly. Avoid. Not worth it.
Professor Baldwin's class is by three exams, one group project, and lots of extra credit. Study hard for exams, do ALL of the extra credit, and put slightly above minimal effort into the project. First test is hardest, but each test is easier than the last. Read the book, go to study sessions, and grind on practice quizzes/TA study sessions.
Amazing Professor that really cares about her students. Bugs and People is very fun and I would love to take another class like it. Dr. Baldwin is one of my favorite professors at UF.
Professor Baldwin was one of the sweetest professors I have ever had. Also very passionate about bugs and her students. I always looked forward to attending her class. Exams are not extremely difficult as long as you answer the study guide questions she provides on canvas.
She really loves her subject and cares a lot about each of her students. She is always offering extra credit and doesn't want to fail you. The material requires a good amount of memorization but it's super interesting. Dr. Baldwin will make you excited with how excited she is about insects. This is a decently easy class, the lab is fun.
EASY bio credit that fufills GenEd reqs. Honestly don't really need to show up, except for Exam days, and for the Bug Fair Project. Exams often have like 5 Qs abt stuff she mentions like once during lecture, but she gives so much Extra Credit you can still get an A even if you don't get an A on any of the Exams. She's very knowledgeable and chill.
A very sweet lady who truly loves bugs. She gives tons of extra credit and lectures well. I would highly recommend reading the book, as several test questions come from the readings and are not mentioned in her lectures. The TA study sessions are very helpful as well; also all the tests are multiple choice so you dont have to spell out anything!
Professor Baldwin is extremely passionate about teaching. The material for Bugs and People is extremely easy to learn, the whole class is memorizing vocab and concepts. There are plenty of extra credit opportunities, the book is boring, the class is not.
Professor Baldwin is extremely passionate about teaching. The material for Bugs and People is extremely easy to learn, the whole class is memorizing vocab and concepts. There are plenty of extra credit opportunities, the book is boring, the class is not. The tests are based on a mixture of study guides and things briefly mentioned during lecture.
I highly recommend this course as a Biological Science Gen Ed or just as a GPA booster. Professor Baldwin is such a sweet lady and cares so much about her students. She made detailed study guides and held review sessions prior to every exam. You have to make sure to study and know the material well, but it is very doable. 10/10 recommend this class
I have had Dr. Baldwin for two entomology courses. ENY1001 was in person and ENY3005 was online. She is incredibly sweet, cares about each individual student and is passionate and knowledgeable about what she teaches. If you can take one of her courses, I highly recommend that you do so. She is an excellent resource in the entomology department.
Cant say much for the actual professor because Im pretty sure she made the TAs do everything. Anytime I emailed her I got a response from the TA and the TA graded all of our stuff. He was a super tough grader and gave horrible feedback. The prof should do a better job of screening and monitoring TAs if theyre basically running the class.
I found this class to be quite boring and the test were unnecessarily hard. READ the textbook in DETAIL for test. Her test are her hardest assignments. The lectures can be difficult to follow along with as far as notes go but her videos are interesting. Overall just an okay class. She is super enthusiastic about her students and bugs though!
Dr. Baldwin was the sweetest professor & actually made lectures interesting. As long as you use the study guide & Kahoot reviews, the exams are easy. There's also a lot of extra credit & the assignments/group project aren't hard at all. I'm really glad I took this class
In a time like this, most teachers are being very understanding of any unexpected situations but she was not. She barely answers to emails unless you email her multiple times and her TAs give little to no help at all. I would definitely try to avoid her class.
Dr. Baldwin is one of the nicest professors I have ever had. She really cares about her student a ton. The only complaint I have with this class is the test is very reading-based. Make sure to read every last detail or you will not get an A on the test. I received 3 B's on the test and still got an A in the class.
She pretty much doesn't answer emails. All of her TAs did her work. We had one instance of unprofessionalism this semester, where she joined the groupme and essentially accused us of academic dishonesty. Also it felt like she threatened us with a no-open-note final.
Dr. Baldwin is the best and ENY1001 is an amazing science course to take. I am not a science person, but really enjoyed and became fascinated with insects! Take this!
AMAZING teacher. Super nice and very knowledgeable of her material. As long as you stay tuned in the class and know he material, you'll be just fine. I highly recommend, coming from a student that put in the effort.
Dr. Baldwin is very nice and excited about her material. The class was not too difficult if you studied, but the exams could be a little tough at times. The group paper is a lot of work, but I think an overall valuable experience.
The material itself is very interesting for me but her lack of communication and professionalism made me hate the class. I would email her and the TAs about something 3 times and never get a response. Things would be due that we had never even discussed. Overall, I don't think she actually cares about her students and it's very apparent. Don't take
Dr. Baldwin is an amazing professor, and I am glad I heeded the advice of others by taking her class. The class is interesting even if your major is not related to entomology. She is super nice and tries to keep lecture interesting, she is understanding and moves things around when needed. Try to study early since exams are heavy chunk of grade
Somehow manages to push her religion into every class. I didn't expect to be lectured about my "bad" social lifestyle choices during class, I just wanted to learn about bugs. Talks about other students behind their back. One of the worst profs at UF.
I really enjoyed Bugs and People. It was a super easy class; no need to attend lectures and no need to read the textbook. Just follow her study guides provided for each exam and you will cruise by this class. It also fulfills you biology and international diversity prerequisites so you kill two birds with one stone.
I thoroughly enjoyed this class, even if my major has nothing to do with Entomology. The material was really interesting and actually more relevant than I thought it would be. I think the extra credit opportunities were amazing and all the students can tell you that Professor Baldwin and the TAs want us to succeed. Read the textbook for tests tho.
Dr. Baldwin is extremely passionate about entomology. She is enthusiastic and clearly wants to share her knowledge with her students. She sometimes will get distracted in class which causes us to fall behind, but it normally isn't a big deal. The class is easy but is heavily based off the textbook. Take advantage of the extra credit opportunities.
Take this class in person- her class isn't worth it online. Exams are worded tricky & based largely on the textbook (which cost me $50) and so much drone reading that u won't be able to memorize. Horrid, giant, annoying group project and writing assignments that barely affect your grades. Skip the stress and take the in-person version if you can.
Group project is significant weight and we received feedback a day before we were presenting. TA does all the work and feedback. Baldwin is nice and a great explainer but the course is so heavy for a 2 credit class. Requires textbook since exams are based on it. I didn't use the textbook and winged it with the powerpoints and got a B average.
Terrible way this class was set up. She expects everyone to be entomology majors.
The group project is awful, especially if you have group members that don't participate. Baldwin does not respond to emails whatsoever. Incredibly heavy class for 2 credits. Lab is better, but still difficult (and not graded by Baldwin.) Do not take unless you have a heavy science background and want to major in entomology. Worst mistake ever.
Definitely only take this class if you're an entomology major or absolutely love bugs. For the lab, you have to catch, kill, and curate 40+ insects. Honestly it was disturbing to me. So just know what you're getting in to!! Mostly graded on exams, which are fairly easy if you do the study guides. It is a ton of work for 2 credits. Lecture heavy.
I dropped this class my first day. I learned of an activity where we make mealworm crackers. I have a severe mealworm allergy. When I told her I couldn't participate because my throat swells near mealworms, she blew me off, saying I "wouldn't react." Also, she doesn't "*do* pronouns" and would rather "go with the flow." No idea what that means.
Dr. Baldwin is very caring and invested in the topics she discusses in the classroom. There are many extra credit opportunities. Grades consist of 4 quizzes, 3 exams, and one final project which are all very easy, creative, and fun. Review sessions contain most exam answers, class takes less than 5 hours a week. Easy A.
Awesome class, I would recommend it to anyone! Super fun and easy class with the most extra credit opportunities I have ever seen. The TA's are super awesome too and host a review before exams which were super helpful.
Dr. Baldwin is sweet and was pretty available for it being an online class. Expect the amount of work for a 3 credit class, not two. That being said I learned a lot and even though the group project was horrendous to coordinate, I would probably take this class again. Bugs!!!
Mispronounces technical words during lectures. Outdated lectures, broken links, and frequent typos in slides. Course work is tedious, poorly organized, and not at par with grade level. This professor might be better in person, but online, she's exhaustingly tedious. Killed my interest in the subject.
If you work full time, the lab requires a collection of 56 insects through 16 orders. This is probably easier for a student who is fully involved on campus to. Many videos were broken, teacher is overwhelmed by students so it is hard to reach by email. I think professor is good but this class is not suited to non-majors.
Such a fun class! Some of the content is nasty, but for the most part the exams and assignments are so easy. I never read the textbook and did pretty good on exams, but definitely would have done better if I did. Extra credit galore! Do it and you can have over a 100 easy even with B's on exams. Bugge Faire project is loosely graded and so fun.
I took this class over the summer and really enjoyed it! The extra credit assignments made the course really fun and interactive. I'm still not huge on bugs but the lectures were still entertaining. I skipped some lectures but still ended in an A for the class, do all of the extra credit!
Dr. Baldwin is extremely nice and incredibly well-versed on the subject of bugs. Taking this course helped me understand and become much more comfortable with arthropods. I used to have severe arachnophobia, but learning about arachnids and insects helped me overcome most of my fear, and I even pet Rosy (a tarantula) and Rex (a scorpion). :)
If you have a phobia of any bugs, do not take this class. If you need a bio credit without a lab, take it. It is easy if you go to class and it requires pretty minimal effort. Tons of extra credit is made available for every test. Low stress, super manageable workload.
Don't take ENY courses unless you WANT TO! You know what you're gonna get! Some of these reviews are a little strange. Professor Baldwin is always very excited about the content. Very kind and her lectures are awesome. Exams are open-note. Keep in mind instructions can be very unclear, and the group project, frankly, was as awful as you'd expect.
Does not care about her students. Says one thing in assignments, will grade you down even if you follow the guidelines and rubric because she doesn't update rubrics or put effort into reviewing material. Don't expect communication, she simply does not respond. At all. You will not get assignments graded until end of semester.
She's sweet, and she really does try to make the lectures engaging. I could have paid more attention in class, but this is one of the easiest science courses I've taken.
I got an A but it was a lot of work for a two credit class. The free response questions on exams are harshly graded. Baldwin includes her personal religious beliefs in the sections on evolution, which made me uncomfortable as this is a state institution and not a private Christian one. She is very lax about concerns over performance on the tests.
Very knowledgeable profes
Dr. Baldwin is an amazing professor who is so passionate about her subject. If you aren't already excited about bugs, you will be after taking her classes. She even helped me get over my fear of cockroaches. Although we get off track sometimes in lectures, I always feel prepared for the tests and confident in my abilities to do well in her class.
I'm a humanities major, but found class easy and engaging. I can appreciate the time invested into sharing internship/research opportunities within the department. Baldwin is clearly passionate, but we did get extremely behind on lectures. The TAs did a good job of covering what would be on the exams during review sessions, which made up for it.
Dr. Baldwin was a very enthusiastic professor which made the content more enjoyable. The TA's are very helpful and Dr. Koehler's jokes made the class bearable. The exams were really easy, but I'd recommend completing all the extra credit opportunities in case you perform bad in one exam. Overall, Dr. Baldwin is a great professor.
Dr. Baldwin is one of the most genuine, kind, and enthusiastic professors I've had. If you put the time in to filling out her study guides, you will absolutely succeed in the course. Collecting bugs is also super fun. It was like trying to complete a Pokedex for a grade. Grading was fair and expectations were well communicated, in my experience.
Professor Baldwin is a good professor but the TAs are what makes you successful in the course. They run the review sessions and do about half the lectures so reach out to them however you can for help and they will help. The class was formatted strictly with the syllabus, but during class we would go off on tangents and the TAs would cover the rest
Baldwin's enthusiasm for bugs is on full display. Course was quite educational and interesting (besides textbook) but also fast-paced. Group project can make or break your grade so be proactive. Extremely strict grading scale; 94% for an A and exams make up ~71% of grade. Just make sure you know what you're getting into.
Easy enough lab considering the significant EC opportunities and online quizzes, but there is no skirting around the immense time required for making your collection. Start as early as you can and DO NOT underestimate the labeling. I liked my TA (Mba) but he was sometimes iffy about answering questions.
take for bio international; dr. baldwin is very sweet but often gives lots of unnecessary info and doesn't finish lectures in time. the TA's host 2-hour review sessions 1-2 days before the exams to make up for this (GO TO THESE!!!). this class has LOTS of memorization. there are few assignments, so definitely study for exams and do ALL extra credit
Dr. Baldwin is a great professor who loves what she teaches. She is always available for help, and really cares about her students. The TAs are tough graders, and sometimes the class can seem a little overwhelming with the workload/projects all going on at the same time, but if you put the effort in, you will do fine, and you will retain it.
Dr Baldwin was a great professor, and I highly recommend taking it if you need the science credit. Her lectures are interesting, and the content of the course is nothing too hard. I took it in Summer B, so the exams were close together and combined multiple units, so the textbook would have a lot of pages to review per exam.
Fun class with an enthusiastic professor. The final is a group project but is more fun than it is difficult. Attendance started to feel unnecessary past a certain point as Dr. B is kind of a yapper and the lectures are abridged versions of the textbook readings. There are 3 exams that can be difficult if you don't study but there's lots of EC.
This class was fr so much fun. Dr. B is such a caring, passionate, engaging teacher and gives so many interactive class activities. There's a textbook (super cheap) but I never rly read much of it and still got high A's on all the exams, just make sure u watch the pre-exam TA review sessions bc they're CRUCIAL. The EC is easy and abundant.
Goat. Lectures are light and I didn't struggle after the first exam. Got an A and didn't go to a single lecture for any of the Exam 3 content.
I loved Dr. B so much! She makes the lectures so interesting and dynamic, that even though they aren't mandatory, I would still show up. I actually learned so many fun facts and info about bugs that I tell my family. I would seriously take this class again. The exams are exactly what is given in the review sessions, so make sure to attend them.
