Very fair and nice prof.
She is a great teacher. Made a class like organinc chemistry seem clear and easier. Very understandable and always trying to help the students.
Braslau in a few words: "I love arrow-pushing." Rebecca specifically states on her syllabus "do not even ask to make special appointments," etc. Be prepared to know every mechanism in detail. On a nicer note: she made a book w/ old e
She is tough and requires a lot from students. She is definitely the hardest professor for O-Chem. She is also not willing to help out students individually.
Rebecca is very unapproachable and her expectations of students are unattainable. She refuses to make appointments with individual students and will write you an evaluation even if you withdraw from the course. Think twice before enrolling.
Her lectures move fast, but they are interesting and she expects you to know mechanisms she covers in lecture for the tests. This class is extremely demanding no matter which professor you have, and I thought she did a pretty good job teaching it.
Rebecca is not very flexable because of her other responsibilities. She DOES do group review sessions(not many attend)and tells you straight up what she expects of you. Her lectures are fast but easy to follow. Her corney jokes and t-shirts lighten up the mood a bit too. A worthwile class.
Rebecca did an awesome job in clarifying the mechanisms. Her tests were fair, shes concise in her lectures, and very helpful in her office hours. Great problem solving sessions. Never once fell asleep in her class. Rebecca is an awesome professor! Know your arrow pushing!
How can I say do not get sick. She makes up mechanisms ans even if you do them right from another book she marks them wrong. She was confusing and to be honest not very good. Then again I did not like her teaching style, it was very hard for me
Terrible. She seemed bitter that she was teaching 108B (o-chem for bio majors) and insisted on teaching it like 112B. If you're not a Chem major, avoid her! She is no help at all and unapproachable to say the least.
Very challenging yet helpful. Very hard topic but she was a very good teacher. She expects alot about of her students. You will not be able to BS your way thru her classes
she is a great teacher! all you have to do is pay attention, take notes, look over her previous tests and the class should be a snap!
WOW where to begin. Rebeca is known for being a difficult teacher, but i think she's just plain crazy. One would have to be inorder to be obssed with "arrow pushing" as she is. Her lectures are chill but her test are beyind difficult. Over 1/2 of my class failed with her because test. be prepared to know arrow pushing mechanisms backwards and forewards when taking any if her classes
Rebecca's advanced o-chem lab has been the best class I've taken here at UCSC so far. I am a senior.
She is obsessed with arrow-pushing mechanisms, however the course is boring...no actual learning/understanding. If you want to actually understand and really enjoy O-Chem and how it works, take the course from Prof. Singaram (great guy and excellent teacher).
Rebecca is a good prof, fast paced and challenging. Plan on spending lots of time studying for her tests. I learned a lot and got a good grade, but put in tons of effort. Her purple shirts lighten up this heavy subject.
This is one of the best professor's I've ever had. She blatantly tells you what she wants you to know. It's a lot of work but you learn a ton, and you don't forget it. The exams are fair and the grading is lax. Great class!
Although, this was a very very hard and challenging class and alot of studying is required, I learned a lot from Rebecca. She loves what she does, she's a pretty fair grader and she's helpful, especially one on one. The arrow-pushing wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. Study and you'll do well
great teacher. loves chemistry. boring subject, but her passion can be inspiring. her exams are formulaic, look at old exams. know the mechanisms, they are on every exam. go to lecture she will test on information that is not in the book, but she points it out when she does. also it is helpful to read the chapters before lecture. know arrow pushing
Rebecca was a very fair professor. Just go to lectures and review sessions. Try to attend her office hours because thats where her true personality comes out. Her tests are NOT tricky at all. Everything is straight forward. Just study, thats it.
Pro: all midterms nice, fluid, easy, just a walk in the park to get an A on them. Con: do not be fooled. WASTE ZERO TIME on the final. It is...too.......long (despite the questions being......E...Z...).
I took this class in 2008, she a fair grader, may seem unfriendly at first (slightly looks down on u), anyway study her notes, review sesssions are helpful, study NMR and radicals like crazy (her favorites), go to her office hours its totally a do-able class, but do hw, dont get behind seriously!!!
Rebecca is an amazing professor! Not only is she an amazing lecturer, but she SINCERELY cares about all of her students and their progress. Class is HARD, but that's ochem. Her midterms however, are extremely straight foward- study old ones thoroughly and you'll do fine. Go to her OH- she likes to see students come in and show an interest.
She won't schedule appointments. Otherwise, she is a great professor. Clear and straightforward. Holds reviews before all tests, and provides 3 or more tests from previous years for each one. You know what to expect. She doesn't agree with some mechanisms in the book/teaches her own so go to class or you'll lose points on tests for wrong mechanisms
She's really helpful, she tries to make everything as straightforward as possible. She can go a little fast over somethings but if you ask her one on one she'll make it clear. She doesn't schedule appointments which suck, but other than that she's a pretty great professor. She sounds like Ellen DeGeneres by the way.
Orgo isn't easy and 108A moves too fast so it's no walk in the park. Braslau is straightforward with her midterms but the final was ridiculously tough. Mandatory sections and homework with corrections was a bit annoying but I think overall pretty helpful. Posting her lectures online was great as well.
Great professor, very enthusiastic, but definitely a tough grader. She does put forth the effort to hold extra office hours and problem solving sessions before the tests which were extremely helpful. You must keep on pace with the course because she moves very quickly and by the time you understand the material, she's already onto another chapter.
Very clear with the material, even if you have no background in organic chemistry. First midterm was extremely easy, but final was ridiculously difficult. Many students failed her class because of it and could not move on to 108B. Great professor if you want to learn, but horrible at writing exams.
amazing teacher. she's clear, focused, and makes sure you get the material. she makes herself available and really wants you to succeed. ended up changing my major to chem. shes makes it so interesting that its easy. definitely recommend rebecca.
Great professor. She really wants her students to do well! She is very approachable and teaches very well. Print out her lecture blanks, it really helps to pay more attention in class. Study your reactions! and be prepared to work hard!
Too easy, really straight forward. Her teaching style definitely changed after her first year of teaching ochem. Gave us a really hard practice final, but a cake final. Most people finished her exams within 45 mins to an hour. Highly recommended
Thought OChem would be hard? Definitely not with Braslau. She teaches amazing and concise, shes great. And honestly the tests were very easy. HIGHLY recommend
Very clear on answering questions, but notes she writes are hard to understand if you don't look over it along with the book. READ the book, it will help further understand the material, but go to lecture to know exactly what she wants you to learn. Failed the first midterm because i didn't go to pre-exam session (out of town). go to pre-examsess.!
HIGHLY RECOMMEND! Dr. Braslau is an amazing professor! Make sure you attend all her classes and her office hours! I promise you if you do that, you will definitely do well in her class! She use to have a reputation of failing almost her whole class, but that's bs. If you obviously put in the effort, you will absolutely get the grade you want! :)
Great professor! She explained everything clearly. Make sure you attend her lectures. I never went to her office hours or read the textbook but I did well with lecture notes and discussion sections.
Braslau is a great teacher with healthy expectations. Doing well in this class is not difficult if one puts in the time to learn the relatively simple concepts. Some concepts were taught relatively unclearly but overall very nice experience!
She is a fan of arrow- pushing, but for me, I don't like her style. Her tests are hard and more than half of the class are gonna fail the class because she doesn't curve. I got an A in 108A Ochem but I am very stuck with her style right now. I need to study extremely hard to pass the class.
honestly an amazing professor. She has blank pdf of each chapter that you can print out and write all over, which makes class so much easier. She posts plenty of practice midterms and even offers a review session before each midterm and final. As long as you study the lecture notes the class isn't too bad. hw mandatory!
Avoid taking a course with this professor if you can. She is absolutely the worst organic chemistry professor at this school. Sure, she makes lectures seem relatively easy. And then you get the exams and 70% of the class is failing. Literally failing. She has subjective grading where nothing is the same for each person's exam and refuses to change.
Watch the webcast! She goes a little fast in lecture so it gets overwhelming and confusing but if you watch the video, pause or rewind it to make sure you have ALL the arrow pushing written down! She is HUGE on mechanisms, but that's what ochem is about! Yeah she doesn't curve, her averages are low, but ochem is hard so practice practice practice!
Does not curve with F average. Chem108B Spring 2015- Ask anyone in the class.
Final was very hard, and if she sticks to her policy about not curving, a LOT of people are going to fail. I wish she was clearer on what we needed to study!
Braslau is an awesome teacher who actually wants her students to learn and master Organic Chemistry. At first, I was really worried that I couldn't get an A in her class because I've been getting high B's, but I still got an A in the end. She says she won't curve, but she is still pretty generous with grading. If she's teaching, definitely take her
This class is not easy. You have to put in the work for the grade. Most people say she's unreasonable, but she's not going to just give you the grade that you want. Study, go to section, do the HW and you'll be fine. She says she doesn't curve but she does. I got a 94 on the first midterm, 89 on the second and ended up with an A+ in the class.
She is an AMAZING professor. A lot of mechanism but that is basically her exam. Lectures are a bit rushed but if you attend the problem solving sessions you have a better understanding of what she is looking for on her exams. Curve or no curve, she will not just give you the grade. You must dedicate a lot of time to her class.
If she's teaching, run. As far as you can and do not take this class with her. She will make you want to rip your hair out from how bad of a professor she is. I don't even want to call her a professor because she can't teach and she refuses to be available to students for appointments to talk about their exams or other stuff. RUN.
Bad lecturer, but provides necessary information in writing for tests. Class would have been average had it not been for her very bad attitude. She was antagonistic towards students and highly inflexible.
Excelling in 8a was a result to my hardwork and understanding of the material. never have I felt more defeated by a subject I actually enjoy. She drains the love for ochem out of you forsure. I put in more work and bare scored above the class average of a D. Of course you have students that do well, but im not lockng myself up and not showering
Covers way too much content and doesn't spend the time to thoroughly explain everything.
I regret not waiting until next quarter to take 8B. She really takes any love/tolerance you have of organic chemistry away because she expects you to know WAY TOO MANY mechanisms that other professors don't expect and she does not care for her students/remains inflexible. Our class average was a D all quarter which really just reflects her.
Struggled in her class w/ her quick-pace & expectation of knowing mechanisms & arrow-pushing (doesn't redraw mechanisms). Has an unsympathetic & antagonistic view on students scoring below average. Problem-solving sessions are inefficient despite the 4 hours available, doesn't curve exams (95% of grade), has mandatory HW (only 5% of grade). RUN.
She's the queen of reaction mechanisms! Lots of memorization. I recommend making your own study guide and studying at least 2 weeks before an exam. She moves at a very fast pace but is willing to clarify your questions. The exams are both multiple-choice and free response questions. Go to office hours and problem-solving sessions
She is the textbook definition of a research professor, she knows what shes talking about but cannot teach it. Would constantly rush through lecture with bad attitude, and did not tolerate in-class questions. Her notes and handwriting are dysfunctional to say the least. I wish I had taken the bad reviews more seriously before taking this class.
Shes really not as bad as everyone says she is. Im super bad at o chem & definitely struggled but I was still able to pass the class. Keep a running list of all mechanisms and go over them even if theres no test coming up. It wasnt impossible she even forgave low midterm scores for those who did well on the final.
Awful professor who failed half the class. she comes every few years. if you see her name, RUN. I highly recommend you NOT take it this quarter. she tests you on things no other 8B professor cares about, and she doesnt care about you. Good luck if you have her. you are basically going to teach yourself because she skips a lot
If you can, take a different professor. However, if you take Braslau, make sure to spend the time to memorize mechanisms ASAP. I'm not kidding! The course-load will sneak up on you. Befriend your TA and go to the review sessions!! Don't expect to do well without putting in a serious amount of time.
Great professor and tested a lot of material that was helpful and relevant towards organic chemistry than other professors who teach this course. All of the material was interesting and she expects a lot from us as well as herself. She even hosts practice problem events before exams where she covers ALL the material that could be on a test. 10/10
Not a great professor, very heavy on mechanism memorization
It is worth it waiting out a quarter of chem 8B and NOT taking it with Braslau. Her in-class notes are insanely complicated which leads to a lot of confusion and mistakes. If you do not want to study chem every day for hours on end in the winter, do NOT take her. You will not do well if you don't go to class and slave your life away to her course.
She deserves her reputation as one of the worst professors at UCSC. I strongly advise taking OChem with a different professor. The large homework assignments are irrelevant to her class, as she regularly disagrees with the textbook. So, what you will see in exam is very different from the homework. Also very mechanism heavy, SO MUCH memorization.
Do not take this professor. I have honestly never met someone who could destroy my interest in a subject so thoroughly. I remember very little of the material since all you have to do is memorize what she teaches. I honestly question the relevancy of her material and her homework is very different than her lectures, at times they are contradictory!
Rebecca's amazing. Some people don't like her because they blame the difficulty of OChem on her but she really tries to make it "as simple as humanly possible" as she says. You can tell she's really passionate about it when she lectures, and she prepares lecture blanks for you so you dont get overwhelmed trying to draw everything during lecture.
I understand that she teaches a difficult subject and that might skew our perception of her. But she doesn't seem to care about her students at all, and she does not make herself available in a way that a professor should, extremely prideful. My advice is to wait on taking Ochem until you get a professor that actually cares about their students.
I am pretty sure she takes enjoyment out of failed students. she still haunts my nightmares. Went into the final with a solid B and received a final grade of a D. Half of my class didnt pass. dont take her. And if you do ask if what chip she has on her shoulder I would love to know. She wasted class time talking about her research....
DO NOT EVER TAKE BRASLAU. Even if costs you an extra quarter, please do not take her if you care about your grade. She was never clear about what she was teaching and the TAs grade super-hard. RUN!!!!!
Genuinely don't understand why Rebecca has such a horrible RMP grade!! Obviously it's a tough subject, but her lectures are super clear and she's really helpful in office hours, so if you put in the work and know the mechanisms you can get an A. Don't avoid 8B just because she's teaching it!!!
she's the literally reason why you should avoid chem 8b!! Skip a quarter and take chem 8b with another professor. Your life will be easier trust me
If you want to learn about ochem, take this professor. Her lectures are very detailed and specific and make things click from 8A. Makes very clear what to expect on tests, nothing new that wasnt in the lectures or the problem solving session. Doesnt tolerate cheating, but very kind professor who is willing to answer questions and is very helpful.
Great professor, the tests are simple if you do her homework, go to her office hours, and do the problem-solving session she does the weekend before each exam. If you make excuses and procrastinate, you will not do well. Stay on top of your work and asks questions and you will succeed, she wants nothing but the best for you. Great professor!!!
Hard teacher!! Don't take her.
This class kind of killed my interest for ochem and is not at all conducive to learning. Homework is required through wiley plus which is an awful program and makes homework take 3 or 4 times as long. Get ready to drill mechanisms endlessly. All in all I find reading the textbook is almost always a better use of of my time than watching the lecture
I absolutely adore this professor. She's wonderful, dry since of humor and very straight forward on what she expects you to do on tests. I was worried to take her class due to the review on here. Here's the thing, you can't memorize organic chemistry. If you go into this class with a strong grasp on 8A and put in the work, you'll do great. <3
I wish I listened to other people when they warned me to not take her class. I got an A in Chem 8A but I'm struggling in this class so much. The homework only worth 5% while the rest of the 95% is on midterms and final. This class wanna make me pull all of my hairs out. Also, she doesn't curve.
I feel like most people here are grading the subject not the prof because ochem sucks and is really hard for most students but the professor is actually really good and it's obvious that she cares. As long as you fully understand her practice exams you will be fine for her real exam.
Dont take her. She makes students feel as though her reviews are because of lazy students. But coming from a student who worked incredibly hard and did extremely well on all other exams, she made the final synthesis problems difficult and made that component worth 25% of total final exam. This exam was worth 40% of total grade. Dont taker her!!
Do yourself a favor and do not take her!! Take the other OChem professor who is respected and actually cares about his students.
She really wants you to pass, so she hosts problem-solving sessions and she has lecture blanks for you to follow along so that you're not ALWAYS trying to catch up. Unfortunately, my performance on her exams started to decline throughout the quarter due to me simultaneously taking BioChem but she's definitely a good professor.
IT ISN'T AS BAD AS YOU THINK. You need to be willing to put in the work required and study smart. First, build a great foundation in chem 8a. Second, know the lecture notes like the back of your hand. STUDY, redo mechs, practice with old exams. DO THE PRE EXAM PROBLEM-SOLVING WRKS. Braslau is a fantastic, enthusiastic prof. YOU CAN DO IT
Professor Braslau is incredible. I admit, her reviews on rmp almost scared me out of her class, but I am so glad I took it. She explains everything very clearly and has very clear expectations. Tests were not bad since I did all the homework and went to all of her problem solving sessions (worth it!). Very helpful and understanding of her students!
Professor Braslau wants you to pass! If you pay attention to her lectures that she makes lecture blanks for you will do well in the class. She holds many office hours and holds review sessions before each exam that have most of the material covered. She is a great professor.
Just dont, shes nice but take it with another professor. She wouldnt proctor tests but then would accuse people of cheating and fail them, by the way this happened to about half the class. Her lectures werent helpful and personally didnt like the way she taught. She also assigned hw that would take about 4 hours/ assignment :(
She's insane!
Took back in winter 2021 :) Very well structured lectures and slides. Homework on wiley plus but was basically from the textbook. Exams were un-proctored and very fair in my opinion. She is very sweet and wants you to actually understand the content.
Falsely accused me of cheating on a test I failed when the majority of the class passed. Then lied to me about a false covid policy saying I wouldn't get in trouble if I just admitted it. Do yourself a favor don't take anything with her even if you have to rework your schedule.
I loved taking organic chemistry with Braslau. The class had 2 midterms and a final, with homework. Yes, exams were 92% of our grade, but the tests were very straightforward and fair. Everything on the exams was covered in lectures, and she shares her exams from previous years. You get out what you put in in this class. Highly recommend!
Professor Braslau wants you to pass the class and gives plenty of opportunities to get help ranging from her weekly office hours and problem solving sections before the exams. If I hadn't gone to her office hours religiously, I wouldn't have passed the class at all. Take advantage of the support provided to you from the teaching team and professor.
I would advise students to not take this professor. She does not want to see students succeed in her class especially with her grading distribution and treatment. During finals week, she purposely inputs final grades early into the registrar before uploading final scores on Gradescope. She gives false hope that improvement is everything inherclass.
Insists we go to review even though it doesn't go things on the test. Has made students cry before. Doesn't like it when students ask her questions alone in review- they must be in a group. More than half the class failed out, she doesn't care. People are currently trying to get her removed. Grades are determined by how much she likes you. AVOID.
Horrible teacher does not care about her students at all. Avoid at all costs if possible.
Amazing! Not enough characters to say how awesome she is. So many opportunities to get help, really clear, amazing lectures (I never once needed to read the textbook!), etc. This class is a lot and requires time and dedication, but it isn't hard because she makes it easy!! Go to office hours and the practice sessions!
Organic chemistry is intimidating in itself and the reviews on here and on reddit made this class seem like hell but Braslau was my favorite ochem professor. Really good lecture slides, easy homework, and fair exams. Highly recommend
Honestly, proudest A of my life. Amazing professor. Made me love organic chemistry.
definitely made ochem 2 a lot easier than it should be. amazing professor, if you go to all her problem solving sessions, you will do well on her tests. She is one of the best professors I've ever had, she is very accessible during her problem solving sessions. she made me love ochem more than I thought I would
I did not do well in this class but that is on me. Prof Braslau is a great lecturer and makes things make sense. I recommend going to all OH and problem sessions and ask for help if you don't understand. She is really sweet and makes ochem fun.
This class is extremely difficult, but the way Braslau approaches the material is amazing. She is a brilliant and funny teacher who always seems extremely prepared. Grades were always completed within one to two days. Hard class but she makes it a little easier!
Her lectures all felt well-planned and it was apparent that she has been fine-tuning them for years to make sure she gets the big concepts across clearly and efficiently. She doesn't curve but the tests are achievable and the majority of the class got above 70% in raw scores.
Braslau is an incredible professor. The class is very tough, but did you expect it not to be? This is organic chemistry. She provides every past exam and hosts a problem solving session every Sunday before an exam, which literally has all the material you need to pass the exam. If you're on top of your stuff, you'll pass. its also 87% exams btw.
This class was hard but doable if you used the resources given. The tests made up a large portion of grades, and some of the questions were meant to trick you. Knowing the practice midterms is very important as there are too many mechanisms to know and you do need to concentrate on some specifically.
She was mad chill lwk wanted to KMS switched my major to chem after tho. She cool
I loved this class and I loved her as a professor. It definitely wasn't an easy class but as long as you studied and went to her office hours, the tests weren't that bad. Highly recommend going to her test prep sessions as she'll usually go over stuff that will be on the test. literally changed my major to biochem after this class
She had good lectures and was clear on what she wanted you to know. Her pre-exam study sessions were super helpful. Her tests were hard but they were fairly similar to the practice tests so it made studying easier. Her lecture notes were helpful. It is still organic chemistry so it wasn't easy but it wasn't impossible because she did a good job.
While slightly intimidating, her class is honestly very straight forward. Everything that you see in lectures is exactly what she'll put on exams (no surprises). Before each exam she holds review session with a practice test, try to go to these if you can. She focuses on mechanisms and arrow pushing, so be ready for that as well!!
She told my class in 2023 that she was teaching the best she ever had, yet every test had a 50-55% average, and she wouldn't curve.
Organic chem can be brutal, but Prof. Braslau makes it manageable. Attend the review sessions - they're crucial for success. unstuck study was a great study tool alongside the practice tests. Overall, a challenging but rewarding class.
