She wears ONLY matching sweater-sets. Weird. Class is like a girls' club, and the exam is out in left field. Constantly talks about her sister; I think she has some issues to resolve there. Thoroughly know your material. Memorizing text/lecture/slides is not enough. Her powerpoint slides are useless. You can't study from them; they don't cue well.
Rebecca is a very touchy-feely person, so she really does not think critically or rationally, and is thus driven too much by emotion. She needs to think more, and put her personal feelings aside.
Really this course is all about relationships. Rebecca's exams are different, aome of the written questions didn't seem to have answers that corresponded to the material. Paper assignment was interesting and easy, see the TA if you have trouble. Otherwise the course was weighted in the end, so everyone did better than expected. Interesting course
Rebecca is an interesting character. Not that bad, but not that good either. She is a bit controlling, but she does try to understand people.

Being in her class is like being in an Oprah audience...too touchy feely!!!

This class is strictly about relationships. The text was very easy to read, almost like a novel. The other required readings (articles) are not too bad, you only need to get the general idea. The exams are not about memorization but UNDERSTANDING the material.. overall a great and enjoyable course... better than evolutionary psyc imho.
Rebecca is very narrow minded, and she gets upset when students express opinions that are different from her own opinions.
Rebecca's exams are really unfair because many of the questions depend on subjective opinion rather than objective facts. There could be more than one answer to many of her questions, and there is no "best" answer. Even if you memorized everything, you could still do poorly on her exams if your opinions are different than hers.
She teaches the course well, but her exams are poorly written and don't make logic sense. I mean, you could memorize the book, and still do poorly, or maybe not study at all, and still pass if you are lucky. Also, she was very hostile towards me when I went to ask her for help.
huh. I was actually impressed at how WELL written the exams were. She is very organized and really knows her stuff. She's current with what's happening in the field and teaches the material in a simple and clear way. Everything's pretty straightforward and interesting too.
Dr. Cobb lives with her cat (a bonafide love expert!) Perhaps she now has a human love interest - highly doubt it. She seems to have a cynical outlook on relationships. She also appears to hide behind her PhD status. Passive-aggressive comes to mind. Save your money! Listen to conventional wisdom. Nothing surprising emerges from her classes.
She was passive aggressive. She snappssssssss @ students @ office hrz. Her lecz r boring & dry.
Well, I actually really enjoyed this class. This prof is awesome, her lectures were organized and interesting - NOT boring at all! If you find her lecures boring, then perhaps you are in the wrong class. Her exams were VERY FAIR. Anyone who complains about her exams clearly didn't study enough.
Not impressed. Not impressed at all. I knew that material thru and thru, and that final exam was RIDICULOUS. she wanted us to reference studies? the questions were so specific that not even she could have aced that. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!
Very interesting class, very helpful and clear in lectures. Tests were a bit hard. Paper was fairly easy if you followed her instructions and recommendations. Overrall great prof!
Good teaching ability, but tests were a little hard. Kind of picky questions
She seems nice and timid at first but she is actually very strict, and picky.
The lecture material is easy to understand and pretty interesting, but the exams are a little more difficult, and nit-picky especially considering she doesn't go into a lot of depth in class. Make sure you do the readings and answer questions according to what her opinion would be.
Lectures are digitized, so you can listen to them at home if you decide not to go to class. Her lecture style is clear, interesting, and easy to follow. She presents the material well, and explains concepts thoroughly. Her movie essay assignment is a little repetitive and boring to write, but if you follow instructions you'll do fine.
I agree with everyone else. I have never taken a test where I needed to memorize every study done and who conducted it. Tests were impossible to do well (even if you memorized) and there was more than one right answer. Papers were hard and boring. I was interested in this class before I took it but I found Rebecca very uninviting and strict.
I took Close Relationships from her last semester and had a fantastic time! She is a very soft-spoken professor with a great deal of knowledge in her field. She's got a great attitude and explains the subjects very well.
I really enjoyed the course, Dr.Cobb is obviously an expert in her field and it shows. She is a great lecturer, very well-organized. Her comments on weekly papers could be a bit harsh, but it's encouraging that she actually reads the papers and thinks about them, and her comments make you a better writer. Would recommend.
interesting class. attendance required because of iclicker participation, but other than that it's 2 exams & a paper. paper is based on a movie- extremely easy & quite fun to do! exams are difficult. mc & sa, which is marked hard! make sure to study lecture & textbook
I found the textbook way more interesting than the course itself. The lectures were lengthy, material covered within them very repetitious and boring. I found the multiple choice questions on the exams very confusing and choices very ambiguous, so knowing the real answers didn't seem to help much. The term paper was fairly easy.
Knows her stuff and is able to teach it okay, at best, but she is pretentious, rude and not very personable. For someone who studies relationships, you think she would be a little better with her interpersonal skills.
I really enjoyed the content of this course but found the prof very unapproachable. She seemed unhappy to talk to the students although I know that's not how she hoped to come across. Questions were encouraged in class, but I think most people were afraid to speak up!
I think it's really unfair to say she is not personable. Just because she does not confirm the warm stereotype for female professor does not mean she doesn't care about her students. A male professor who deals with students professionally would not have received such comment. she is very approachable and willing to help her students.
i don't think she is not personable. when i took her class, she asked me twice if my paper is going okay. just because she deals with student very professionally doesn't mean she isn't caring
She's great. She responds to emails really quickly, is very understanding, fair, and professional. She really cares about the subject she teaches and really puts extra effort into making sure that student are engaged. This class is really worth it. Just make sure to do your reading before class.
Rebecca is great; she's very helpful and tries to give as much information and help, when asked a question. She likes to get to know students, even in 100 people lecture. The MC of exams are a bit harder, they're more application questions rather than memorizing theories or numbers. Definitely suggest taking a class with her.
Very accessible. Class does cover research, but not extensive that it becomes overwhelming. Very organized lecturer and definitely to get a good grasp of material is to read the textbook. Fair tests, need to read carefully to the multiple choice questions as they can get tricky. Fun interactive class, but you need to put in some work.
The prof did a very bad job in grading. She is very strict grader and her own research contradict itself. Even though she teaches close relationship, she does not have one herself. I HATE THIS PROF. Too much generalization
Very insensitive professor, she is all business. Will dock you for being sick with a note or for having family emergencies. Not a very inclusive professor. All her studies focus on heterosexual, upper-middle class white people. Also a very tough marker. Take this class if you are prepared to bust your butt.
Probably the worst class/prof I have had. Test were not even on her lectures, it was instead based on random uncovered things from the test. So read the textbook, but wait! You MUST attend the useless lectures because of participation (10%). The paper helps boost your grade. But the test are difficult.
She is a very good teacher. Don't listen to the comments below. Her class isn't all that hard as long as you put work into it like any other kind of class you take. She gives hints in lectures of what will be on the test. Focus on the big points in the lecture and are highlighted in the textbook. Uni life involves work, you just gotta work hard.
She's a nice lady but she gets frustrated easily and comes across passive aggressive at times.
I took this class as an elective thinking that it would be easy. The exams are SO SUBJECTIVE!!!!! Regardless of whether or not I studied I would do bad on exams. The only easy thing about this class was the paper - which was actually reasonably marked. Thank god it got scaled (because her averages are so bad!!!!)
She doesnt seem to understand anything about theory. You have to listen to her yatter on about useless stats which dont make sense. Also she kept talking about how female victimization isnt real, I found that to be offensive.
She doesnt support her students. I emailed her looking for support, seeking guidance when I was having a difficult time and was brushed aside. She does not care for student success, only her own image.
The course material is really interesting, but the course is poorly organized. The prof does not respond to emails. Some of the online lectures on canvas just stopped intermittently while playing (No sound suddenly, I guess she made a mistake when she was recording her lecture). Lecture slides are pretty vague and difficult to study for exams.
As a third year student, I must say this is the worst course I've taken. I am not somebody to bash a prof, but this one is hard to ignore. I would not recommend this prof at all. The sound quality is not good on lecture videos, she is not clear on many concepts and the exam questions are not well designed based on the videos/readings.
One of my least favourite classes I've taken at SFU. The course consisted of confusing lectures followed by exams that were based on minuscule details. I would not take a course with this prof again.
This is the worst course I have taken at SFU. Her lectures are long, boring, and confusing. Her tests are very hard and focus on the most specific and irrelevant details which makes studying nearly impossible. She is way too picky with marking. It seems like she assumes that her course is the only thing that matters. TERRIBLE PROF.
Course was interesting but the exams are ridiculous, you can fully know every concept and theory but if you don't know the names of who did a certain study off a random page of the textbook you're screwed. Instead of questioning on concepts she questions on random small things that were barely talked about.
The exams are almost impossible to do well on. They ask you questions about information that was mentioned in a random sentence in the textbook that doesn't at all draw on concepts of the course. The time limit for the exam is also ridiculous as it gives you no time to even think about the answer as the questions take forever to read themselves.
When I took it online, there were several videos posted by her. However it seems that the TA was the one handling the course 99% of the time. I personally didn't like the online version because it was very disengaging. Can't really say much about Prof Cobb though because she wasn't there at all.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS! The sound in the lecture videos constantly cuts out and is very disengaging. You can know the material and concepts front to back but if you don't memorize random facts that she mentioned once that have nothing to do with knowing the material then you're not likely to do well on the exams.
Rebecca's class was good. I don't understand the uproar; I didn't find her course that hard. The level of difficulty was avg compared to other courses. Her exams, especially the short answer really helps you practice applying the material to real-life situations. If you stay on top of your readings, take good notes, and don't cram - you will be ok.
As mentioned in other comments, this is not quite a hard course but the prof has no idea how to teach properly. Lectures are broken and make few contributions to the comprehension of the material. I mean you can have a pass grade on it if you are interested in the topic otherwise avoid.
Avoid at any cost. All the information from the lectures is so uncleared since she had no idea how to teach everything to you. Take it, and you waste credits for P grade.
The course is not that hard, but yea, the prof had no idea how to deliver all the knowledge to her students. Broken lectures, no slides provided and everything sound ambiguous. The exam is full of applications and confusing and ends up with a 56% average. AVOID.
The worst class ive ever taken at SFU, and coming from a 5th year student that says a lot. The most confusing exams, don't let the course name fool you into thinking this will be a good course. Prof also is super confusing, perhaps this is her first time teaching, not sure.
Worst professor I have ever taken a class with and that's coming from a fourth year Dean's List student. Her midterm/final are impossible and draw on specific, unrelated concepts. She gives you one hour for a midterm with highly specific questions. You won't get to finish. If you see any good reviews of her and her class, she wrote it herself LOL
The online class was terrible. Everything in the exams was worded weirdly, and it was done INTENTIONAL. It's almost like the prof doesn't want us to apply our knowledge, but to solve riddles. You have to remember all the minor details of videos/textbooks/readings/lectures and do all that in 1 hour. Also, TA's are unreachable before/during exams.
Horrible. It's 2021, lecture recordings shouldn't be so low quality. You essentially teach yourself everything and she shows you videos of Friends while rambling about nothing. 2 midterms, a final, and a final paper you need to peer review. Exams are a crapshoot, she asks about random studies mentioned in class for 5 seconds. Seriously, avoid!!
Midterms in this class test you on specific studies she barely mentions. Super detailed questions, with super tricky answers that seem designed to mess you up. The lecture videos are formatted differently, and very low quality that sometimes the audio just cuts out. Do not take this class or any class with Rebecca for that matter.
Most of the time she won't question you about the things she says in lecture, but will pick one irrelevant study in a 45 page chapter and ask you about their results. Easily the worst exams I've ever taken, they're nearly impossible to study for unless you've got a photographic memory. Avoid her class if you can, it's a miserable experience.
Exam questions are based on specific results of random studies she doesn't mention. There was zero communication or interaction from the proof, and the TA knew nothing. It's hard to be self-directed/teach yourself when half of the video lectures do not work. Terrible.
I strongly disliked this course. There was no communication between the course supervisor, TA, and students. I studied very hard for every exam and then nearly cried because I would do poorly anyways. The only reason I am not below 60% is because of the paper and participation mark. Exam questions are very very difficult.
I took this class online and was eager about the content, which was rather interesting however I highly disliked the course overall. The exam structure was terrible, barely enough time to complete it and the questions are very specific and trivial. The course structure overall online is not ideal.
Unideal class structure. The exams are timed to be completed in an hour. The questions are mercilessly specific. The quality of the lectures are not good. She goes over so many points and expects you to memorize specific details of readings and studies. You barely have time to think that long. Very inaccessible for asking for help.
Do no take this course to ruin your GPA (if you care for it). Buy books and learn thr course contents by yourself. The time limit for each exam is insufficient. The professor presents different contradictory findings in lecture and then ask super specific questions. Sometimes the questions are out of materials and assign long readings too.
Interesting material but poor execution! I'm sure Becky is a nice person, but she did not care about the course. Video audio cuts off almost every week but nothing is done about it. Exams included old questions on material we weren't assigned to review. Exam questions are quite hard, specific, and wordy, and the 1 hr limit is tight! DON'T TAKE IT!
I took this class because I thought the content was going to be interesting! Some stuff was interesting to learn but the Professor really does not care about how well her students do and learning in general. Honestly, it was SUPER disappointing after enjoying some aspects of this class from psyc 260 and do not recommend it to anyone. AVOID IT!
You have no interaction with the prof. Test are about recall, because it's 90% MC, and you have roughly 1 minute a mark. Questions are WORDY. You will get questions that weren't in lecture or readings. Video audio is all over the place and contains dead links. Course has interesting material, but evaluation is done extremely poorly. Do not take.
I'll sum it up. Do not take this course. The quality of exams is by far the lowest that i have seen. Complete recall from textbook and requires you to reference studies in an exam? Exams are horribly designed and unless you have a perfect recall, do not take this course.
Literally worst professor + course I've had. She clearly doesn't care about her students at all and whole course sets students up for failure. MCQ exams don't even test your knowledge of the material- only on things like whether you can remember a random study in the book. It's a shame that such interesting course material is executed so horribly.
The course is interesting and easy but the professor is not. she tries her level best to create questions and scenarios in her exams that make it impossible for students (guessing game), questions aren't found in the textbook, lecture videos or readings. if you do not want psychological trauma and PTSD please avoid the class at all costs. esp Cobb
This class isn't as bad as the reviews make it seem. I found the midterms super fair and easy and there's a lot of free marks in the quizzes. But the final was absolutely ridiculous. Very wordy and tested on concepts that weren't in course material. Overall, I wouldn't avoid Dr. Cobb just because of the bad reviews, just be prepared to work hard.
1) The questions from exams don't even test the knowledge from the course, they are ridiculously hard even when you study. 2) This prof is not accommodating at all if you are taking it online. If you have technical issues that interfere she simply responds it was your fault to begin with and does not allow any room to make up.
Lecture materials are very disorganized. Exams are extremely hard especially because it doesn't draw from the current lecture materials. The movie paper assignment instruction is disorganized. She reuses the same lecture videos every semester and doesn't even revise it. I should've used the elective grade system for this course! AVOID AT ALL COST!
The prof is not the main contact but the TA is also unresponsive to emails and doesn't put a lot of effort in caring about students. Lecture videos are a bit messy it seems to be reused for several semesters, no lecture slides, midterm questions are hard and some not course related. Movie paper assignment unclear and confusing.
you can study hard but the exams don't even test your understanding of the main concepts. The lectures don't work well and you can tell its recycled. She says things like "that graph" "this text here" but there is no pointer and just a picture with scribbles on it so you don't even know what she is referring to! low effort slides.
Do not take this course unless you desperately need to, at least with Cobb. The lectures and readings were not integrated well, and the midterms and final were so far removed from the material we learned in class. Study the questions she gives for the practice assessments! That's the only solid advice I can give for this course.
I've taken this course twice now and cant get more than a D because of how difficult the exams are. So many of the questions are not even course related and it's impossible to get good marks in the exams. Would not recommend it.
super average experience and lectures were the worst thing ever. 12% free for just doing Quiz's (no limits) and 6% for peer review. Those helped a lot. it's manageable, but if you have other choices, i'd go for those. But if you don't, it's not too bad. Do the work, and make notes on ALL the readings (I suggest splitting with classmates).
Questions and information about the exams and assignment came from the TA and the only time you hear from Cobb is when you watch the pre-recorded lectures. The exams focuses on applying the material and understanding the readings. They are an hour long and has MC and short answers, but the MC take so long to read. It's time consuming and hard work.
this class was more so boring than hard. The lectures are not engaging at all. You don't hear from the prof at all. The paper is so dumb with the pointless peer review process. The exams are also very hard the avg for the first mid-term was 60%. Focus on what she says during the lecture and remember important studies.
The exams are hard in that she expects you to apply the material and not just memorize, but it's not anywhere as bad as people make it out to be. Distance ed format isn't ideal if you like a lot of engagement with your prof, but if you're more of a self-directed learner, it's fine. Focus on key findings from studies and overarching concepts/themes
This professor was unclear of what she wanted. Lectures were obviously recorded awhile back and barely helped for what was actually on the exam. Exams involved you to input information that was barely mentioned throughout the course. Very hard to contact her so the TA is your best bet for anything.
Don't take this course with her. The guidelines for the tests and the paper were all unclear and confusing. For her tests, she questions you on a random line in the book that she did not even mention in her lectures. The paper instructions were unclear, and I didn't know if I was integrating the materials into the paper in the right way
Really unclear about what's going to be on the tests. Random information that wasn't even mentioned in lectures was on the tests. Paper was all over the place without clarification on how to integrate material.
The format of this course was easy, no final or midterm, but the module quizzes and assignments were almost impossible to do well on. Quiz questions reference one obscure thing from the textbook. Grading criteria was super confusing, and the TA marked super hard. Wouldn't take again.
Rebecca and her TA did a great job in organizing the intersession summer course. As long as you luck out with a great group, you'll do fine. Some marking for individual assignments werent clear - resulting in a low grade, however the group project and easy weekly quizzes make up for it. Definitely recommend !!
A fabulous and engaging professor. Fair.
Be ready to read a lot! The instructions are so unclear that I went to office hour 3-4 times over 1 assignment because they never could give clear instructions. They never go over the assignment they assume you understand it just by reading it. Weekly Group Assignments based of the readings/ lectures, weekly quizzes, peer evaluations per week
Awful proof easy class really easy, but the prof is horrible gives terrible guidance for assignments and when asked about what shes expecting she wants something to wow her and it's like worth 5% and she'll give 4.75 or some ridiculous number and now explain why its not full marks Without using derogatory language i'd just say she is not pleasant
Interesting course content. Grading criteria was not clear, the TAs and teacher were not on the same page for the marking or what they wanted to see for the assignments. I took this class in intercession, and it was so much reading, video watching, and note taking. Quizzes were pretty easy, I got a good group, and my TA marked decently. GPA booster
The course was not organized, grading criteria were unclear at all especially for group assignments, I feel TAs were strict and they all had different expectations. Hoped to get a better grade because the content itself is easy, i'd recommend to take it with Yuthika
She is not a great professor, very strict and does NOT teach just makes you go to break out rooms
The instructions and communication from the teaching team are most unclear. They'll butcher your assignment and deduct marks based on personal preference. The rubric is just eye candy.Avoid taking this course with her, you'll gain nothing but a sorry grade.Hands down the most unfriendly and nitpicky markers I've dealt with in years.NOT A GPA BOOSTER.
The midterm and final were tough, with answer concepts so similar and applicable it was hard to choose. She isn't accommodating and blames students for issues, even tech-related. Lecture slides aren't posted, and exams test tiny details she mentions in lecture. Avoid if possible.
I had 0 issues with Dr. Cobb. The course was online though. I found that what she taught and assigned, was applicable to the quizzes/tests, so as long as I studied, I would get a decent grade. I never enjoyed being assigned super long podcasts to listen to though. They unfortunately were testable material too.
Lectures were delivered through short videos and were easy to follow! Readings were assigned each week as well which appeared on the midterms and finals. Dr. Cobb always was down to have a conversation and help the students learn!
