GREAT! I love the readings, the topics, and the movies we watched. Coleman makes her class difficult, but college should not be easy. She prepares her student for upper division work.
Although I didn't like her she will improve your writing (only plus about it). She gives a lot of in class activities that count as points; so you must attend.Gives you last minute instruction the class before something is due.She is not friendly and doesn't care about her students. In my opinion she was a TERRIBLE professor.
English 101 is all about writing. This class is exactly that and critical thinking. Coleman is a hard grader. BUT! she is helpful. Good English teacher.
I didn't think I was going to like this class when I saw the very long, formal syllabus; but I ended up liking it very much. The syllabus keeps you on track--EVERYTHING is on it, and when she gives you a good mark it is like winning the lottery. She is a very hard grader, but she knows writing and will help you improve. Take her!
I learned a great deal about writing in Mrs. Coleman's English 101 and 103 classes. There were tons of writing assignments, and therefore a whole lot of feedback, and so I feel that I really grew as a writer under Mrs. Coleman's instruction.
I took her for 101 and 103. She was extremely tough but I learned a lot under her. She gives a ton of feedback and you will definitely grow as a writer. Since taking her I have not gotten lower than a 90% on any of my essays.
Great experience think I learned from this class
One of the best instructors at Msjc. Not a pushover and will set out clear guidlines for the work she expects, and then will provide great feedback on how to improve your work. I got a B overall due to not following the guidlines of one of the essays, but Coleman let me know what I did wrong and I got all A's on the rest of them.
She was amazing after you got over her intimidating specificity! She improved my writing skills, participation is really important! The class discussions are usually pretty interesting and you must take part in them!
Coleman really isn't a hard grader, she just has very specific guidelines. If you follow them you'll pass. She cares a lot about her students and if they learn. She expects a lot in terms of reading everything and participating. I learned a ton about writing in her class though.
I did not like this professor. Her office is located in the Library, but one can not go and ask her questions. If you do happen to interrupt her (not according to your syllabus) she will not hesitate to remind you of her office hours. I thought professors were there to help you.
She is readily available for any student with questions and offers very constructive feedback. Be prepared to put in some work. If you work, she will work for you.
Professor Coleman's English 103 class is incredibly difficult. The prompts require graduate level thinking. I felt unprepared coming in, and struggled to keep up throughout the semester. The expectations in Coleman's 103 are incomparably higher than 101. If you're not planning on going to grad school, don't waste your time with this class.
Coleman is great! She expects a lot from her students, but is very helpful. She will tell you exactly what is wrong with your paper, and gives you a second chance on doing some of them over again to improve them. She makes you think before writing, and helps you to improve your skills. Very interesting and interactive class.
Professor Coleman is a great English instructor, she gives plenty of feedback and is available to help you with essays. There is a ton of reading and homework due for every day there is class. Do not wait to read and participate in class discussions and you will do great.
I took Professor Coleman through an online course in the summer semester, so you can imagine the amount of work I had to complete in a short amount of time. However, Professor Coleman makes the work worthwhile. She will help you out in any way and responds quickly to emails. Her feedback on essays improve your writing greatly. Fantastic teacher.
I have had the pleasure of taking several of Professor Coleman's courses and I have thoroughly enjoyed each one. She gives clear feedback on every assignment and is always there for students that seek out her help. She is a great professor and I highly recommend her for students that want to improve their writing skills.
Mrs. Coleman provides detailed assignments and a syllabus that outlines the whole semester. It is easy to keep up with the work, since it is all organized on the schedule. She allows students to use one page of notes on both tests and quizzes, we were even allowed to use them on the midterm. Her feedback is detailed and extensive. Highly recommend
You're going to get out of this class whatever you put into it, and if she see's you care she will care.
Coleman is one of the best profs I've taken! She has really great, insightful lectures every class period. She offers really helpful feedback and is always available to clear anything up for you. There's a TON of reading, but she provides a clear schedule of when to have everything finished by. I would definitely take Coleman again!
Coleman was one of the best professors I had at MSJC. The readings were a bit tough for me at times, but the group discussions helped tremendously. Coleman notices if you're actually reading the content and are actively particpating in class. Also, she is always encouraging students to email her and visit her office hours.
I took her over the summer and really enjoyed her class. She assigns literature that is worth reading. She is not a tough grader when it comes to essays just follow directions exactly. The book we used once so i wish i didn't buy it. She does assign a lot of work for summer so be ready to focus. Would only recommend taking this one class for summer
Discussion board points don't reflect the amount of work put into the assignments that are attached. Follow her guidelines exactly and you will get a good grade. Blow it on your work in the beginning and there's not much you can do to help yourself. It is a lot of work crammed into a short term class.
Professor Coleman expects students to be motivated , active participants throughout the semester. Complete assignments and all reading before class. She is extremely approachable, educated, motivating, and genuinely wants students to succeed. I highly recommend taking her as a Professor. I have learned so much in her class.
Great Professor for Eng103! Professor Coleman is a tough grader, however she gives good feedback to follow. Dont miss class or else you would fall behind!
Phenomenal educator. Provides exceptional feedback. Professor Coleman's input is so helpful. She will push you to do your best. I feel well prepared for every college course after getting through this. If you have the opportunity, TAKE THIS CLASS. You won't regret it.
This is a wonderful professor. Definitely not an easy A, but you do enjoy her class and most of her assigned reading material. She sadly doesnt leave room for creativity in your papers (writing style, it needs to be in an exact format) but if you put in the effort shes worth it. Get like a 3 inch binder though! Overall great and understanding!
If you are taking this class to improve your writing skills I would recommend taking her class. If you are just looking for a class that is easy and just to get it over with this is not the class for you. It's challenging to have a A+ but its possible with hard work and dedication. Tips: follow her directions exactly, &don't miss any assignment.
I really enjoyed taking this teacher. Prof. Coleman provides clear grading criteria. The stories covered in class are interesting. Writing the essays shouldn't be too hard if you show up to class and take good notes. Make good use of the lectures and the example stories. 3 in class Essays and 3 written essays.
Absolutely enjoyed this class, Professor Coleman gives clear guidelines on what she expects of assignments. She's also pretty funny and an entertaining lecturer. The material in the class itself was pretty interesting, nothing was hard to read nor "boring". She usually has assignments due everyday though (although not hard) so don't miss class!
Very reasonable and understanding. Gives lots of short stories to read for homework; goes over the readings in class. Had about 5 major essays. Holds plenty of office hours.
My favorite professor ever. She is super nice and funny, assigns lots of reading but theyre interesting short stories. Bought 2 books: one reading book from like Barnes and Nobles and the other a school learning book from the book store. Creates a comfortable environment.
The feedback received by this instructor is vague to say the least. Apparently the quality of my work wasn't getting any better(according to her grading). She would often correct things that programs like Grammarly would state are correct(comma splice, etc). Feedback was arbitrary at best. Got a B+ due to getting nickle and dimed points.
Professor Coleman's summer online class was hard, but not undoable. She is very responsive to emails and posts alot of announcements as reminders. Her feedback was helpful, and she gave a chance to revise for credit.
Professor Coleman was a wee bit tough on grading, however it was to help, not discourage. I took her during summer so t'was a lot of work in a little time. But she gave great feedback and gives you a chance to revise your grade. Follow her instructions! Overall she was awesome!!
Prof. Coleman is very repetitive and if there is something you must learn she will repeat it enough times for you to learn it. Her directions for her essays are vague and hard to decipher and she changes a lot of things throughout until the due date. She assigns a lot of reading responses. Starts off mild then gets into heavier reading.
She is a good teacher. I personally didn't like that all we wrote about was controversial things we never wrote about anything else.
Coleman is a great professor. She goes above and beyond to help students learn to write. If you're lazy, this is not the class for you. She expects students to read the syllabus and schedule. She gives a schedule Day 1 of class and sticks to it all semester. She is the most specific teacher ever. Yes, she is hard, but not unreasonable.
Her online English class was well organized and she sends lots of reminders and responds quickly to emails. Feedback on the assignments was good but sometimes it took about two weeks to get it. She improved my writing. Readings were good. Too many papers though. I would take her again.
THIS IS A RECENT REVIEW!!!!! THIS IS BRAND NEW AS OF DECEMBER 2018 CLASS Rebecca Coleman is an amazing professor, she responds to emails so so quickly, she reviews our essays within a week, and she gives great feedback! She also gives us the opportunity to revise every essay we right! I RECOMMEND THIS CALSS TO EVERYONE!! WOULD TAKE HER AGAIN !!
Professor Coleman is amazing. She taught me how to write beautiful papers and shes down to earth. She takes her time to write her syllabus and gives you a set schedule on The readings and what is due. I took her for 92-101-103. I wish I can take her every semester. Shes an inspiration
Colemans the type you love or hate. She's hard but helpful. I got a B and usually get As and I am not mad about it. She expects a lot but gives a lot too. I wrote 5 papers. Got A and Bs on them but got a B because I didn't do the homework. I would have probably got a C otherwise. She's cool. I recommend her. Nice and smart.
She really makes you work for your grade. She is a tough grader, but does allow you to redue an essay and keeps the better score. She does provide very good feedback which helps you due better on the next essay. There is alot of reading to do. She is really into Philosophy and most her essays were on a philosopher.
It's a lot of refer to the book or refer to this link when you dont understand and will continue saying this even if you aren't understanding. If she were to try to better explain to the students that weren't understanding from the book or web links then shed be a great professor to take.
I took Professor Coleman online and thought it was a good class. She has video lectures, handouts, the book, and links that helped me learn the material. I also attended her virtual office hours. Which really helped. The course is really well organized and the feedback is good but there is sometimes so mcuh that it is hard to take it all in.
Really quick responses too emails. Gave lots of extra credit. But the class has a lot of reading. Don't take her online if you aren't okay with reading.
I was in her class for an honors course about censorship. She's clear when lecturing and makes it easier to understand. She clearly cares about her students and provides good feedback. She usually responds to emails/canvas messages within the same day or the next. She grades assignments quickly too. I wish I could have her for all my classes.
I had to fight hard for a B in this class. She is very direct and seems almost mean in her comments but then you realize it is because every assignment is related to the next assignment so she tells you what to fix to help your grade. Use her comments and resources to improve, read her announcements. Use the revisions.
Coleman is the best. Very nice and helpful. I had her for two classes, English 101 and 103. Both were really well organized and reasonable. Most readings are linked online, so a book is not used much. Lots of reading and writing, but she is fair and let's students revise some essays. Do the work and apply her feedback, and you'll be good.
She tends to speed through lectures. Her class relies on reading the books assignment because you get quizzes based on the chapters that were assignment. When it comes to her essays, she is very picky and a bit harsh when it comes to grading. Other than that she gives really helpful feedback.
Coleman is the only professor I had who held summer Zoom sessions for the class to learn the material. The material is not easy but the Zoom meetings really help make it clearer. The class has no textbook. Just online readings, which are mostly interesting. I loved her class. Learned a lot about myself and writing.
Professor Coleman wasnt my fav in the beginning. She was a tough grader. But, I soon learned her constructive criticism was to help us move into the next assignment! Only 4 essays. Word count range of 600-1,300. Simple! She makes you work for your grade! I highly recommend you take this teacher! You wont regret it! Shes an inspiration to people!
Professor Coleman's online English 101 has a good pace. It is a lot of reading, but the work is spread out well. The course is organized, she responds to emails fast and her feedback is helpful. Grading is not the fastest but she gives comments so it is expected. Check all her announcements. she leaves alot of tips and videos in them.
Coleman is the best prof i had. She has really high expectations but let's you revise and offers extra credit. Very fair overall, def will make you a better writer. I get As on my papers in other classes now. Highly recommend. Just do the work, revise, and do extra credit and you can pass.
To get the most out of this course, participation in all activities is beneficial. She is the best teacher I ever had. Not an easy A but in good way.
Professor Coleman's literature class was awesome. Lots of reading but only 3 exams and discussions, one paper. Very straight forward grading and instructions. Lots of reminders and communication. Good online class.
Dr. Coleman is an inspiring educator. She is challenging but in a way that makes sense since it is critical thinking after all. I liked that she gives feedback on papers. I don't like so many discussion boards but they were good preparation for papers. Overall, great teacher and nice person.
Coleman's 103 class was hard because she really expects you to cite everything and use quotes right. I learned how to write college papers in her course. I liked her feedback. Its direct and says exactly what needs to be fixed and how to fix it. I read everything cuz I wanted an A and my skills are not great. You have to read to get it. Good prof.
Fair amount of reading but par for the course as far as upper div Lit goes. Coleman is extra passionate which makes sometimes dry/inaccessible course content more bearable. Discussions are thought provoking and interesting. She grades fairly and has a likable personality.
Coleman is a great English professor. Eng 103 had 4 papers, discussions, and a lot of easy assignments that help develop ideas for the paper. Lots of reading but it is mostly interesting. Very reasonable about late work. I wouldn't say she is an easy A because it requires a lot reading and writing but she is fair and clear about her expectations.
Professor Coleman communicates perfectly through the online setting. She sends out frequent and clear reminders about due dates, responds to emails, grades fairly and gives great feedback, as well as a revision opportunity. She also gives the class extensions if she is behind on grading.
Coleman doesn't mess around, she takes her job seriously. She is helpful and flexible within reason but not easy. She responds to emails quickly but grades slowly because she gives a lot of detailed feedback. She loves literature and philosophy. You will learn from her. Do the work, read the instructions, and apply her comments. Highly recommend.
Coleman's class was super easy for me. She gives templates and samples for every assignment so it is hard to fail. All you have to do is follow directions and read a lot to earn an A. Nothing is that hard to read or write. Every assignment gets feedback too, and she tells you exactly what to fix. With extra credit, I had over 100% in the class.
Not an easy A, but definitely learn a lot.
Professor gives feedback the first two times than you are on your own. Lots of lengthy assignments be ready to read 5-10 page articles, stories etc. If English is not your strong suit do not take this class. Class would probably be better in person.
Professor Coleman is taking her job seriously and is clear on her expectations. She gives good feedback and is fast in answering emails. Most assignments are from online reading so you don't have to pay for textbook. This is not an easy A class, however, if you FOLLOW EVERY INSTRUCTION she gives, you will be fine. She's def a good professor.
Coleman does not play around with English 103. Dedicate a lot of time to perfecting your craft. I took the summer class for 6 weeks and I can tell you 3 essays in a week was baffling to me. I still did it and passed but time management is key here. This is a big challenge one can take on, and I promise you can succeed just like I once did!
Professor Coleman class is very easy to take since it most of the time is just one discussion board per week but does require a lot of sit down time and she tends to be a tough grader and real stickler when it comes to essays and making sure they are perfectly citated.
Good.
I felt this professor does a good job at teaching the course. This isn't a course for people looking for credits. She's critical with her grading, which is good. It helps people get prepared for more advanced college work. If you want to learn valuable concepts, go for it. If you just want to coast by in college, don't bother.
She's a tough grader and the feedback is incredibly detailed. However, all criticism is meaningful and will help you develop stronger writing skills. She is passionate about the material and will reward genuine effort to engage with it. Additionally, she is very communicative and will help you out as much as possible. 10/10, would take again.
Not that bad of a class. After you get past the first 2 weeks, the class is mainly discussion boards and working on your essays. As long as you apply the feedback and look at the sample A essay she gives you, you can easily get a B minimum. I suggest to start or plan essays as soon as the time comes as they're lengthy in requirement (1-1.2k words).
As someone who thoroughly enjoys English classes, this class was one of the first I've struggled in. Though her class wasn't necessarily "hard", the assignments are lengthy and reduces my motivation. But I wholeheartedly believe if you put in the effort, you can earn an "A". Readings are relatively short and essay topics are interesting!
Professor Coleman is a great english teacher and I highly recommend taking her. homework activities here and there and 3 essays, in class essay, and finals in class essay in total. She explains the work great and she is nice and funny! She is specific towards certain things so make sure you pay attention to the little things.
Professor Coleman is a very caring instructor, but she is very strict and particular when grading. If you have the time and ability to dedicate to her class along with utilizing her office hours for clearer feedback, you can learn so much from her. However, if you have a heavy life and school load, it's a tough one, even if you do well in English.
Conducts very engaging lectures and motivates students to participate. A total of 4 papers with the last one being an in-class timed essay. Papers are usually around 5-6 pages. Somewhat strict when it comes to grading but gives incredible and detailed feedback, showing that she really cares. Take her and you will become a better writer. Great!!
Very interesting Lectures and was left with a new mindset from them. A fair amount of writing but it's to be expected from an English Class. A lot of discussion posts and expected to participate in those. I'd recommend this class to anyone interested in the course.
Terrible communication, can't even understand her course! This one I will be dropping . She gives bad grades when the work is done
She grades terribly, theirs evidence that she does not read the papers submitted as there is multiple instances of her criticizing me not saying or explaining certain things and then it is mentioned in the next sentence over. She does not display the patience needed to be a professor and multiple of her submission comments displaying “attitude”.
This was my favorite class this semester. I took a short term class so there was a lot of work in only 8 weeks. I met with Professor 3 times on Zoom, and that helped a lot. I enjoyed the materials and the organization of the class.
Absolutely would not recommend this Professor to anybody. Tough grader, as if everybody is a scholar writer. When giving feedback, throws in attitude. Grades harshly on the final timed essay (as if we knew what we were going to be writing on). Avoid at all cost!
I will start off saying that just because this class is difficult does not make the professor horrible to take AT ALL. I took her 8 week course, and this professor's curriculum IS challenging. She is responsive, kind, caring, and she improved my reasoning in every capacity. She loves her teaching and I believe she wants the best out of everyone.
She's an extremely tough grader, i understand this is a level above english 101 but she leaves comments that are very stupid to be honest. It's a heavy workload for an 8 week and you need to watch 90% of her videos that she made or else you won't get credit. I don't recommend this professor
Had like 2 essays a week wax discussion reply was 900 words
Critical thinking requires a person to objectively challenge the way they think, and this along with reading and writing skills are what you will learn in Coleman class. She teaches reason and logic; if you're looking for a "tell me your feelings" course, she's not the one for you. She clearly cares and puts in the work, and she expects you to too.
Overall a great professor, lots of work though, but as long as you stay on top of the workload it should be an enjoyable time in class.
Fantastic class! I really enjoyed the experience, and it drastically improved my writing skills!
Professor Coleman is such a great professor. Although I initially was hesitant about this course since it is very discussion and participation heavy, I really grew to enjoy this class and this interesting discussions we had. I highly recommend taking her!
ENG-101 is a college composition class, and it helped me a lot. Prof. Coleman teaches well and makes sure that students are writing the essays correctly, giving good feedback. Some units contain less reading, some contain a lot of reading. Great class and great professor.
This professor was great! Yes her class and the topics discussed were hard and left me confused at times, but she does a great job in giving constructive and critical feedback. All papers I turned in she left plenty of feedback that guided me to become a better writer. I do recommend taking her if you look to improve your grammar and writing.
Great professor, but beware, there is a lot of reading. She grades very nicely and leaves good feedback for improvement in the future. She responds to emails quickly if you have questions and wants the best for her students.
This professor only accept links in a certain way and if you do not you early a 0 which I get but I have a certain online application that doesn not allowed me to do so so I had to drop and much reading and writing too much for an english class. If you do not have a life then this would be for you
This course will set you up with the fundamentals needed to write college-level English papers. Do not expect to coast through this class, and do not treat it like it's going to be easy. Mrs. Coleman is very approachable, respectable, respectful, and genuinely cares about seeing you succeed. I will gladly take another of her classes next semester.
Had to get back on Zoloft to get through the course. Crazy strict policies, makes you over-prep for exams only to ask irrelevant questions on 4 out of the 30 readings, weekly discussion boards are essentially 2 page essays, most weekly readings 20+ pages. Doesn't matter if you have anything else in your life going on. Do not take her classes.
Hybrid class w 1 hr meeting each week & the rest in Canvas. About 30 pages reading a week; five 250w. discussion boards; 2 three-page papers; 2 open-note exams; and participation. Slides posted after class and gave a study guide for exams. Fun lecturer and available in office hours. Class wasn't hard, just required coming to class and reading.
Coleman makes you excessively read and take notes on the readings only for the notes to be pointless. Worst teacher to take if you're coming straight from high school. Grades super late and is very nitpicky with the MLA format you have to follow in papers. Topics we covered felt more of a government class than an English 101.
Class is hard but really interesting and leaves you with a different mindset on rhetoric and freedom, Coleman's theme. Very caring and authentic instructor. Learned a lot in her class about writing. Very passionate. No homework but had to read & take notes on readings for the papers- 4 of them. No busy work. Challenging but good. Taking her again.
In my experience, Professor Coleman's class was very challenging but I appreciated it because it pushed me to improve. Whenever I emailed her about a question, she would reply almost immediately. She would provide paper copies and post online, so everything was accessible. She also gave me an extension for my final, which I really appreciated.
Passionate professor. Not the easiest A, just show you care and you will do great. Participation is expected as well as attendance. 4 essays, 1 in class timed essay and 3 typed essays discussing current political issues based on numerous readings. If you're looking to improve your writing skills and challenge yourself, I recommend this class.
