She's horrible at teaching. Very unfair and unclear. She should be band from teaching. Theres really no point to attend classes, because she teaches nothing anyways, but if you dont attend she will fail you. She's one of those band-nerds ditz teachers.
class is boring and pointless, but tests are super easy and there is little home or class work. she is friendly and tries to be funny/interesting.
easy class to pass. test are easy, its like your in high school again. but shes boring.....
All 16 of us passed . I think nearly everyone with an A. Tests are hard but account for only a minimal part of whole grade. I think she's a good teacher, has exeprience and a Phd. Nice person as well as understanding.
Easy but real boring. She is pretty pointless but if you do the work and study a little you'll pass the class no problem.
Well considering I've taken two classes with her, I must like her. I like her because she has her favorites - me being one of them. Get on her good side and you'll be helped out, other then that you might be screwed.I won't lie, it would be boring a lot
I like this class. She tends to lag on but otherwise she is very informative. The tests are pretty hard if you don't study. The lectures can also be a bit boring at times.
She's a nice lady but talks alot of nonsense She usually confuses herself because she tries to make everything sound all sophisticated If you want to pass the class you have to read and go to class Tests are fill in the blank based on her lectures and multiple choice based on the text-3 Observations
shes a nice lady, but not very helpful. she doesnt teach from the text. her tests are mostly on the text and 2/6 of is on her lecture.Theres no quizzes, but there is 3 observation papers. It's fairly easy if you read the text and remember the little details about it.
ok she is a nice woman, has her PHD but her lectures are almost pointless. have not much to do w/ the book and the exams are all from the book, you have to do all the reading on your own. she can get kinda boring..the exams are not too easy, in my class many kept failing the exams!!
goes off topic but easy notes and test
Boring class, boring teacher.
i enjoyed this class! but you do have to do the work. just read. if you read and the book, and you're not annoying, you'll pass. the tests are are fill in the blank, and if you do the reading like a good student, you'll pass. and do the papers. i got 100% and a 94%... pretty easy. she's cool.
damn man...if you dont like to read dont be in this class
This lady is on another planet. She stares at the back wall of the room allot and talks very slow and has some sort of twitch. she is nice though. and gives xtra credit
She lags on getting assignments and tests back to us. It's really bad. But she is easy and her tests are straight forward. She is a little wierd, but you'll get past that after the first week.
Boringest woman on earth. plays favorites to those in the class that actually have children. there are better professors. don't settle for the worst
Hardest tests I've ever encountered. I got a D on just about every test, despite studying the behemoth of a book. She covers almost nothing from the book and what she does talk about in class is about 25% of the tests (usually written portion). Boring class, I hated the group work. Not easy at all.
Hard tests, boring lectures. she sucks at lectures, they are almost useless, 80% of her test is on the book which she does not lecture from. IF you like to read and do all the work yourself then take this class, do not expect the teacher to guide you to an A
Take her if you love boring lectures and reading the book on your own...I did get an A in that class...but then expect extremely hard work before you can get an A from her....
She sucks

yes there is a lot of reading and is not a fun class , she is a hard teacher but if you can handle the stress then you have it made.
dude she talks to much. she is easy but boring as hell. she talks about her kids to much.
not a bad teacher. most students laugh at her, not with her. im a poor student, so that is why im doing terrible. her lectures arent one to look forward too.
she is a good teacher, but you must do all the reading she assigns. she doesnt lecture from the book and her hw is super easy.
Worst I've had!Lectures don't make sense & doesn't talk about the book, yet the tests are based on it.Is not open to students opinions & acts superior to students.Tests aren't that hard, but don't make sense. You won't learn much from this class & it's boring. She thinks the students are the prob., but it's really her.I got an A, but I don't recomend!
she sucks
shes okay. never looks at the students always at the walls and gets off track alot. if you want to pass her class you have to read the book and take lots of notes
shes nice and HOT!!!!!!!!!
I took her SOC 1 class way back in Fall 2001. It was her first semester teaching and she was very easy. We watched a film, I didn't read the book, took decenet notes, and got a B in the class (missed about 7 days too). Oh yeah, she's not really hot anymore, cause she's older, but she was probably really hot when she was younger.
you HAVE TO read the book. otherwise...pretty okay class. you do articles once a week, 1 group pres, 1 oral pres. Very easy going and understanding if you miss class. JUST LET HER KNOW WHY...
She was really nice but pretty flakey. She never looked at the students when she talked...always at the wall. Hard to keep up with her during lectures cuz she would stop talking in the middle of her sentence and start talking about something else. Easy class tho.
She is nice. many films in the class. Tons of opportunities for ECREDIT. 3 papers based on observations, super easy. Tests are pretty easy i got a B in the class and never read the book once. Add a comment everyonce in a while and she will love you. Super sweet teacher. very helpfull. in fact i am taking her again for Soc 2. recomend her a lot.
she was nice and approachable. her lectures are pretty off the wall, she just writes words and incomplete sentences all over the board in all different directions that in no way go together or make any sense. you have to just listen well and make your own notes out of what she says. tests are straight from the book so if you read then they're easy.
She seems to be very distant at first, but once you get to know her she's a very warm-hearted person. She brings a lot of discussion to class.
All the above are true. She is a little flakey but she is like a mentor to me. She truly believes in her students if you take her more than once she makes you feel special and singles you out as a huge asset and recource when talking to the "new" class. It's cool though, not embarssing. She is awesome overall!!
she is understanding and helpful with attempting to finish her class with at least a B.

Very easy, as long as you're willing to do the work, which really isn't that hard. She can be very boring and a bit of a snob, but she's alright. Can't say I learned a whole lot from her, so for that reason I don't recommend her too highly, but if soc., is not your thing, than she might be the teacher for you. And she's kinda politically correct.
Dr. Hatch is a really nice professor and is very willing to help.
she is a nice teacher but not really nice when you state your opinion...a little boring...no boring!!! You must read!
she is the same with the last six years, so read the rest of the reviews. my rating is like her lecture. we all do random talking!!
In the 6 honors classes, this is the worst and most difficult. Sometimes irrespondsible and a hypocrite. 80% of class time are useless, she just do random talking. Lazy, do not have the exact grade for us after final. Just hate her class, learnt nothing cuz of her bad teaching, does not teach main concept. Write random words, useless. NOT RECOMMAND.
I had Dr. Hatch and i enjoyed her class. Her exams are kinda hard. She made us write two essays. Good teacher for sociology!
Seriously, the people complaining about her notes are morons. It is not her job to take your notes. She is extremley knowledgeable, savvy in sociology. A very nice lady. Tests are tricky, ask what needs to be known beforehand. Do all the reading, and you should get an A. Take her, she is truly great.
She?s one of the good ones.
A+ professor who actually motivates students to create their own product and develop their own individuality. People who do not "recommand" her must be incredibly mentally dull.
For those of you saying you learned anything from this professor you should test yourself and see if you honestly did. Im going to be brutally honest, this class is a joke. Easy A? Yes. Learned anything? No. Expect to teach yourself all the material. If thats what you are looking for, then by all means be my guest.
I really enjoyed her class. Make sure to read your textbook. She really motivates her students, in my opinion. I recommend her.
Read. Seriously. That's all you need to do to get an A. Professor Hatch is just the best. She cares a lot and she's so easy to talk to. We talk about sociological factors in reality a lot so lecture is interesting. Take it!
the homework she assigns seems to really just be for the sake of giving you hw. but she is one of the best professors. lots of reading. lots of discussions. helpful. nice. as for whether or not you'll learn anything in this class, it's up to you. the haters don't seem to understand that you're supposed to get out of it what you put in.
I took the class to get an easy "A"...and I got an easy "A". There is some effort you must exert- tests, for example. Other than that, the class is incredibly easy. Class wasn't very exciting, but at the same time, neither were my classmates. It's mostly just regurgitating the textbook. She puts people on blast without knowing. It's funny/awkward.
You are expected to read the entire length of the textbook and the reader. It's not a difficult read, plus its interesting. Her lectures are interesting because she enables you to apply the sociological principles in real life. She's really nice too!
Would be better if she had not have lied at the beginning of the semester. "This will be your only writing assignment all semester." It is about to pass 5 now. (And no not 1 paragrapher's... 2 have been 6-8 and one to be assigned tomorrow will be 6 or so and one already assigned is 6-8. Just do not lie. Plain and simple.
She is a great professor but very hard to be in her class. She tells you to read the book and study off of it but in the exams the questions are SUPER HARD!!! =[ ...
She doesn't teach at all. There will be no learning the material here, but you will learn about current events. You will have a lot of discussion groups and you will have a lot of outside activities from extra credits. Tests are EXTREMELY hard.
Though she's REALLY nice, her lectures are INCREDIBLY erratic. She starts to say one thing and then says something else, so it's really hard to keep up and figure out what she's trying to say. Test questions are worded weird, plenty of writing assignments. Good luck; you'll do a lot of learning on your own.
Creates socially awkward situations by putting students on blast about how they're better than everyone, doing worse than they should, ill, etc. wo really noticing. The difficulty of her tests do not match the ease of the class itself, and she grades relatively easy when it comes to writing assignments. Easy class, but not easy enough to be worth it
Very easy A in the class, but lectures are very tangential
A really great professor. Incredibly knowledgeable and very helpful. Loved the class and her as a person.
There is a myth around the Mt. SAC Honors program that Hatch is a 'good' professor. Wrong. Her class lacked organization, lacked definition, and lacked substance. Hatch, herself, is a nice person and I would never say different. Tests were hard, but mainly because she was even harder to follow. Just work hard and persevere. Got an A anyway.
All bad! This lady is very unorganized and loses herself in her own lectures. Very dingy. I couldn't take it any longer, so I dropped the class after the 4th week. However, if you're looking for an easy class to pass with little effort, this is a good class for you. CAUTION: if you want to learn, try another professor.
Hatch is a bad teacher. She drones on and on, but never gets to the point. She contradicts herself quite often, and disinterests a lot of the students from focusing in class. Her exams are very hard to pass. Make sure to buy textbooks because she requires a lot of reading. If you want a great sociology teacher, look for Yoon.
She is a very nice and sweet lady. Her exams are super hard but I like her lectures a lot (although sometimes she forgets what she wants to say). You need to read the books by yourself because they are gonna be on the exams! The weekly homework is article review and there is a final research project(research outline, poster, presentation). Offer EC
Hatch is a bad teacher. She drones on and on, but never gets to the point. She contradicts herself quite often, and disinterests a lot of the students from focusing in class. Her exams are very hard to pass. Make sure to buy textbooks because she requires a lot of reading. Don't take her class. If you want a great sociology teacher, look for Yoon.
Hatch is a pretty good professor. Those who did not get a B in the class are complete idiots. She does not teach well, so it requires you to teach yourself, which isn't so bad because the textbook information is somewhat interesting. Never miss the class before an exam because she tells you what will be on it. I recommend her! I got an A.
I didn't need to take this class but I thought it would be an easy A. She really make you work and she can be very unclear sometimes. Read the book, attend class and don't get on her bad side.
The class requires A LOT OF reading. Weekly exams during Winter time. Prof Hatch is caring and nice, but also unclear about what she said but all you need to know is on the textbook. Remember to attend the class before exam as she will give you hints about the essay questions. Work hard and you will get an "A". At least I do ;)
She is SO frustrating. Class is easy, but the effort required to deal with her on a weekly basis is not worth it. Don't take her unless you have to, and if you do, you'll basically have to teach yourself the material.
Dr. Hatch is an extremely nice professor. I love the fact that she tries and genuinely cares about her students. She doesn't lecture on the book though, and that's where most of the questions on the test are from! So make sure you read the books and the readings. She's very helpful! Love her!
Had her for Soc 5H and 14H for one semester. True that her lectures deviate from the information in the exams, but it's really not bad if you just study straight from the book. Exams have multiple choice and one or two mini-essays. Beware though she marks off huge points for non-attendance. I got A's in both, and she is really understanding & nice.
She seems sweet enough, but she's rather awkward and her lectures aren't usually centered around the book which is what she uses for tests and she goes off on a lot of tangents. I recommend just reading the book since her lectures aren't really helpful. The class is pretty boring, but if you read and do the essays you should pass. Tests are hard.
She is a nice lady but i want to get up and teach for her. She needs to spit out what she wants to say, be clearer and give examples. Plus she is very very boring. I hate going to her class. The reading i dnt mind but class discutions i want to leave because she dont know how o have discussions.
She's pretty random at times and her lectures do drag on and on. The quizzes and tests will be easy as long as you read the book! Two major essays, a cemetery one and one on older people and their aging experience(DO THIS ONE ASAP! DON'T PUT IT OFF!) If you have ANY questions just go talk to her, she is always willing to help. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
I really really enjoyed her class! You gotta be engaging and interactive in class discussions in order for the class to be fun and enjoyable. Tons of reading so don't fall behind. Tests include multiple choice and short essays questions; they're easy if you read and study. Definitely recommend this class :).
She was really unclear on her instructions and digressed in class. I did not know when she was discussing about class material and when she was not.
Cares about her students. She was the best teacher, very thorough, easy going. Be prepared to read.
She is super approachable, as long as she sees you are trying then you will receive a good grade. There is lots of reading and she is super flexible on deadlines. Everything I learned in this class was very interesting and the class went by fast.
Really nice lady who loves sociology and her students. But she is not very clear sometimes. By that I mean that she gives very broad questions that left our class wondering exactly what she was asking. However, if you ask for clarification she will clarify. Altogether, for the winter semester: 1 research paper, a lot of reading, and 5 exams.
She is a really good professor. She really cares about her students and is always willing to help her students. She is somewhat lenient with the homework. She will allow you to turn it in later if you just say why you couldn't turn it in. She gives a study guide for the exams if you ask for it.
She is one of the worst professor's I've ever taken. 3 weeks into the class and I still didn't learn anything about the class sadly i had to drop it with a W but its better than failing. She didn't teach much, shes the type of professor that makes you learn by reading the whole book so yep not as awesome as I expected.
Worst professor ever. DO NOT TAKE HER. She will cut you off while you're talking. She doesn't have any agenda and rambles on about random topics. You basically have to teach yourself everything. Everything is very vague. TALKS VERY SLOW. FORGETS HER WORDS AND TRAIN OF THOUGHT VERY OFTEN. She talks about herself a lot.
Pros: SUPER easy grader, study guide, don't need to show up that often, some EC Cons: boring class/lecture (some materials are interesting, but the way she talks about them is not), not that great of a teacher, kinda confusing and not clear
Honestly Professor Hatch isn't that bad. Her class is boring though, and she goes off tangent A LOT. I usually leave the class thinking "Wtf did we even talk about". But her class is easy if you just read the material on the study guide. She is actually really, really nice if you go to her office hours and ask her for help! I ended up with a 97%.
People here are being too harsh, sure she seems to be lost sometimes but it doesnt really affect the class too much. She gets her point across and is a lovely woman. She is very easy to talk to and is cheery so the class so it makes class enjoyable. It is honestly an easy A if you invest some time in the class and she loves group discussions.
She is a nice person but that doesn't make a good professor. She grades really easy so you will get an A if you study. But the real challenge is to pay attention because she doesn't really have a point when she lectures and gets lost in her own words. You will learn nothing from the class but learn how to self teach by reading the book.
At first, didn't really like this class but I am glad I did not drop the class like some people did because it turned out to be a very fun class that I enjoyed going to! I took both Soc 1H &Soc 5H during the same semester. No quizzes, only tests. Typed assignments & one research paper. Soc 5H was very fun 10/10 would take again. I love Prof. Hatch!
The worst professor I've ever had at Mt. SAC. If you can find any other professor, I'd suggest you do that to save yourself some trouble. I can see that she is a nice lady but teaching wise, she was horrible.
Be prepared to teach yourself. Learn the terms that are covered in each section of the book and you're set for the semester. Very knowledgeable, but has poor execution. A plethora of extra credit is given. which helps tremendously. Other students asked in person if I recommended this professor and understood why my answer was no after one week.
She gives out easy As. Doesn't teach or give useful lectures. If you go to class be prepared to hear stories and topics that don't relate to the section of the textbook you're on. She loses her train of thought A LOT. No useful feedback/comments on essays or exams. Has an attitude that can kind of be discouraging. Feels like she gives 0 effort.
She is a nice lady, but her grading criteria is not specific. It is hard to figure out what she wants sometimes. She has articles due every week which is basically finding an article and writing a 3 paragraph response. There are 3 exams and they are fairly difficult. STUDY YOUR NOTES, NOT BOOK. She gives study guide, but it doesn't always help.
Honestly Prof. Hatch is an easy professor. I took her for 3 honors sociology classes during the same semester and got A's in all three. Lectures are not too helpful for the exams, but as long as you read the sections (with the study guide in hand), you will do good on the exams. The final is not cumulative and she offers extra credit frequently.
Expect to read the textbook for exams, and also participate in discussions. There is one big research paper that you will focus on for the semester so she may grade harshly at first (I got a C on a first draft) but its mainly just to make you work harder. She grades easier on the actual paper. Just read and turn in you work on time & you'l do great
Dr. Hatch really cares about her students and is very understanding. Pay attention during lectures, take good notes, and review the study guide.
Professor Hatch is a wonderful person but she doesn't teach that much in her course. A few exams but a lot of articles that you will have to do for her class that are worth points.
