Although she was new, she understands what the students go through & not everyone can get into to or understand ECON. Her tests are not too hard because she believes people shouldn't be discouraged from a grade to learn. She's willing to hear your opinion about things and adjust if need be. Very helpful, sweet, & funny. Take & you won't regret it.
Professor Johannsen is an amazing Professor. I was planning on taking Economics simply for a course requirement, but I have decided to double major in it. At the end of my mid-term, I told her "I love economics." She is a wonderful professor, is truly funny, and her exams are straightforward. Great Professor, I would take her for again!
I wish she taught Econ 1B. Very nice professor, received an A. Just be prepare to read chapters and study off the powerpoint!
She's so nice and helpful. Lectures are clear and homework is doable. Quizzes and tests are not that hard if you prepare carefully. Highly recommended!
Professor Johannsen is the best economics professor! She will help as much as she can if anyone is stuck on something or doesn't understand what's going on. She gives long lectures, but she makes them fun. Study off whatever is on the power point and you will have no issues with doing the homework or studying for an exam. Highly recommended!
I been at PCC for almost three years now and I never met another professor that cares so much for her students like she does. There's homework which you must do, if you don't you wont pass the class. STUDY!!! for the tests, midterm and final. Please buy the book, its a lot of help. I recommend taking her, you won't regret it.
Listens to her students. Does her best to explain stuff to students. Doesn't lose her patience. Lectures well. Quiz methods help retain information. I wish more classes were like this.
Although she needs to make her class more upbeat and structured, I still give her respect and managed to learn from her. She is super lenient with homework, gives extra credit and curves. She is always there to help and she's relatable since she is also a student. If she taught Econ 1B and had a 2-3 day class instead of 1, I would take her again.
She is really nice. The overall of the class is pretty easy, depends on how strong your understanding in econ. 4 quiz, 4 hw assignment, 1 mid term, 1 final, and 1 project. quiz is basically classwork. You dont have to do it, she will go over the answer before you turn in the quiz. She will let you discuss about the quiz with people around.
Chill professor, Just make sure you study before an exam
Professor Johannsen is an amazing professor. She is willing to help out as much as she can to understand the concepts and being able to apply them into the exams. She is also very relatable too! The overall class wasn't too hard and there are 2 exams, midterm and final. Make sure you do study the notes, read the textbook and do the HW!
Econ is always a hard subject no matter who you take it with. Class is difficult and lectures are hideously boring but Prof. Johannsen is kind and considerate. Be prepared to take some of the hardest quizzes and essays in your life if you're not an econ major.
Class consists only of lectures, which are her pretty much reading the book to you, so they're not helpful. Homework is only done online, so book is not required. She doesn't really know how to explain, but she is nice and grades fairly. 3 Tests and 3 pop quizzes make up 70% of your grade! But tests are straight forward if you study and do the HW.
Her class -- as another review stated -- consists of her reading the lecture off the smart board word for word. Which are posted to canvas from the get-go. Her exams are unbelievably lopsided; her grading criteria makes absolute no sense. Her HW assignments consists of a 1page current event essay (every week) + MYEconLab. Highly overrated.
I do love her class. She teaches economics well step by step. Thanks to her, I've decided to major in economics. She is always open to answer questions you may have and cares about every single of student. If you put effort, you would definitely get an A. I highly recommend her class!
She's just amazing, during this whole covid thing she has been making it easy for everyone to pass her class. Show up for the mandatory classes and you're fine. She made them very minimal. She is a very good in person professor and she posts many practice exams WITH THE ANSWERS and then did reviews just before the exam. Oh yeah she posts powerpoint
We were switched to online, so lectures were not required to attend, but recorded which were helpful. Some concepts are tougher, but if you attend lecture, study Powerpts, practice questions & practice exams, no reason not to do well. Offered EC & very lenient with current events this spring 2020 semester. She wants you to do well. Great professor.
Only had 3 exams and uses Proctorio for them. Gives practice exams and powerpoints but only helps half of the time at best. It's easy enough to pass, but way too difficult to earn an A. Overrated professor.
One of my favorite professors! Very interesting class, a lot of reading and hard tests. It is not an easy A, you will have to work for your grade.
This class will be very hard for you if you do not have an interest in economics. The work load was heavy, and I would suggest not taking it with a lot of other classes because you will fall behind on work. Prof Johannsen herself is kind and tries to help her students, but expects a lot. Not an easy A.
Most overrated professor. Doesnt finish grading when pass grading deadline.
Dr. Johannsen was a great and hard-working professor for the class. When I send a message, she always gives me a quick and kind response. Take her class!!! Highly recommended :))
MOST IMPORTANT: DON'T TAKE HER DURING AN ACCELERATED PERIOD (IE SUMMER OR WINTER). She's reusing the material she used for in person learning so her video "lectures" don't correlate with what you should be doing. She doesn't provide a complete syllabus so you should take note and write down all the due dates to stay ahead. Don't try messaging her
I took her for Fall 2020 Econ 1A, for an 8 week session. I really enjoyed her class, it was a lot of work, but it is clear she enjoys economics. She was very responsive any time I had an issue, which included a problem during an exam where I got kicked off Proctorio. She does offer EC. I am taking Econ 1B now with her for Spring.
This professor has hours of lecture on easy information, yet passes by the difficult material quickly (one example on a concept only). I'm an A student who has loved every single subject at PCC EXCEPT THIS DAMN CLASS. This professor does not know how to utilize time. HW questions are harder than examples in class and also completely unrelated to it
She's one of those professors that acts like she cares about the students and then never answers their emails about anything. She should take more time to go over examples (like concepts related to homework) instead of the other stuff that's self explanatory. I feel like everyone in our class is lost right now... she doesn't explain concepts well.
This class is seriously one of my favorite classes I've ever taken at PCC, my C grade was due to my own shortcomings. She always replied to my emails in a timely manner and was always flexible with assignments and grading. Not sure of the issues others had but I had an amazing experience with Professor Johannsen! I recommend her to everyone!
I took her for both 1A (8 wk class) and 1B (16 wk class) and found her to be responsive and reasonable. You can get up to 4% pts, overall, by completing both ec papers. She is flexible and will work with you if there is an issue. The weekly live sessions are very helpful. Not an easy A, but worth it.
It's a tough class to take. The units are easy but very time consuming, so the only time that you can see how well you know the material is the tests (of which there are only three). My biggest issue is that on the tests there are questions that you have never done any problems like, and so no matter how much I prepare I always go into it fearful.
Professor Johannsen was a really great teacher. I took her 1A class in the Fall and enjoyed it so much I decided to take her 1B class this spring. As long as you watch her lecture videos, skim the textbook and take notes you will do fine. Its a little time consuming, but extremely manageable. It really shows that she cares that her students do well
At first, I was worried about taking this class, however, the professor makes it very manageable. The sets of work per unit are similar so you can plan your work schedule accordingly. You can easily pass this class as long as you watch the lectures and read the textbook.
As long as you review the book along with her detailed lectures you will be able to pass this class. It is expected in college classes that you will have to work for your grade and this class is good preparation for transfer to a university. I was easily able to communicate with Professor Johannsen at her weekly office hours and learned a lot.
I loved this class and professor Johannsen! If you put in effort you'll do well. Her lectures are easy to understand and contain all you need to know for the exams, just take good notes. She makes class interesting and fun you can tell she's passionate about what she does. She genuinely cares about her students and wants to help you succeed!
She gives great feedback and help a lot when I was struggling in the class. Pay attention and do all your work and you will pass. RECOMMEND 100%
Economy is already a hard subject to grasp, so get ready to read the textbook and watch her lectures online - almost an hour long videos. You HAVE to write notes while watching them. The exams are open book and about 60% of your grade. So, study and practice math concepts. She cares for her students and has many office hours. Do the extra credits!
I nearly failed the first exam. My tip is to print out all the lecture notes and take notes from there. Free response in study guide is almost the same as exam. Read the predictably irrational because its waste of time to look for answers during exam. I didn't read the textbook. Its the same as lectures. Not easy, but also not hard class.
I took Professor Johannsen over the summer and her class was honestly so doable You do need to have time to watch her recorded lectures and take notes and you won't need the book she covers everything important Do the practice exam and use it during the exam it's almost the same thing Do good on exam it's hard to bring up grades after EXTRA CREDIT!
She explains ECON so well for those that are not well-versed in economics naturally. She focuses on the concepts rather than the math, which helps to do well on the actual math. Weekly quizzes and homework, which helps to study for exam. Online class is awesome, she understands life gets in the way and gives you a grace period to turn in work.
She's really sweet. Not sure why she isn't rated 5/5. Knows so much and is willing to help with anything. Work is incredibly manageable. Lectures are great and consist of all the information needed for homework and exams. Class is more theory based-does not have a lot of math.
I had an online experience with her. Honestly, you can just watch the lectures and you will do well on tests and quizzes. Homework is just graded on completion she does not nit-pick if they are right or wrong. BEST TEACHER! Extra credit. For Honors there is an extra credit paper that is not that hard as long as you connect ideas from the lectures.
her class was very straight forward and easy. Her study guides that she gives are just about the same questions that are on the actual test itself. She literally cuts straight to the point when asked a question which i really liked about her too. This is an actual good professor.
I really liked her class. I had a hard time finding an economics professor because the other one I took was a flat out abysmal. Prof. Johannsen was actually a very good teacher-- her lectures and test are closely related, the test are often based on what the book says, and she is a very good teacher
Professor Johannsen does pre-recorded lectures which makes studying material easier. The actual material is pretty dense and demands a comprehensive understanding of economics. You get multiple tries on quizzes but not on the tests. They are all open note so it is quite manageable if you take good notes.
If you understand the lesson, this class is an easy game. If u dont, you done. She is nice, have extra credits, 3 exams 60% total grade, no open-notes. Good luck!
ONLINE ASYNCH: Professor Johannsens' completely asynch course is very well structured. I took three other somewhat demanding courses while taking this econ class and found that it was often the least of my priorities. You can sort of work at your own pace and take notes and do the hw whenever you please before the two-week deadlines.
Professor Johannsen is inspirational. Her course is lecture-heavy, but she makes concepts easy to learn. Always willing to repeat information if students do not understand concepts. Her grading system makes it easy to get an A as long as you study.
Class revolves around lectures. Going to lectures is OPTIONAL. Exams is mandatory (every 2 weeks). Quizzes, case studies, and problem sets are done asynchronously through Canvas. Curriculum is carefully planned out. Caring and keeps everyone informed on what is expected in the class. Honors paper was litty. Extra credit opportunities as well
last semester, i said attd was optional. i was wrong. sowwy :( homework consists of problem sets and quizzes. tests r worth 60% of grade. plz study and read textbook even though its optional. plz attend all lectures. textbook is unnecessary to buy. u can find online for free. gives ec. honors project was fun :)
Baller econ professor. very understanding and accepts late work. tests are not too easy or hard as long as you study. honors paper is a lit way to connect concepts to the real world. grades leniently and criteria is clear. very organized as well. best econ professor you can take.
Lecture heavy, 3 test dictate 60% of grade. Test are not difficult as long as you review the course material before the day of test. Professor gives ec that is equivalent to 4% of grade, lenient on deadlines. Honor project is 10% of grade, but it is not difficult and good mark will be given as long as it is completed accordingly.
If u cant pass this class with an A, drop the school, u r too lazy
Easy A.
Professor Johannsen is very engaged with students and the material. She puts together a class that makes it easy for anyone to succeed. Do the readings, show up for lectures, and take advantage of her office hours if necessary. She is very available to students and wants you to succeed! Super kind, caring, and funny as both a person and proessor!
Overrated teacher. Grading criteria makes absolutely no sense on tests. Basically thinks that everybody is out to be dishonest, which creates an overall very weird vibe. If you have the chance GO WITH ANY OTHER ECON TEACHER and save your time. very much test heavy, do not even understand what the point of even having the other assignments are.
I took Econ01A with her and was able to pass the class with an A. However, for Econ01B, she has it out for every student to make sure their not cheating. Very understandable to make sure that students are not cheating, but, I noticed that students that were not cheating were getting marked for cheating but cheaters were not. She's not understanding
After taking her class, all the reviews and word of mouth were false. If you want to pass with an A, stay clear of this professor. Grading criteria is NOT clear. Your grade is basically based entirely on EXAMS and any other assignment will not help or adjust your grade. Does not respond to messages/emails quickly. Not lenient or sympathetic.
Best econ Prof at PCC! She is my favorite professor and I am switching my major to econ because of this class. You will lose points for cheating, but otherwise it's easy to get an A with the extra credit. Exams are 60% of the grade, but everything else is full credit if you turn it in.
just reads off a powerpoint. Waste of tuition money. My friend got C becos she said he cheat
not an easy class but prof johannsen is great. definitely take econ with her if you need the class
easy class but boring. her online class is harder and accuses people of cheating and grades harsher. my girlfriend got 98% on her BH class and I got an 86% on her regular online B class. accused me of cheating. Im smarter then girlfriend.
overrated! Seems that her AI detector grades the exams and not her! She is focused on catching and nothing else. Her lectures are not efficient for exam preparation, and you have to read the book and yet the book is not 100% enough. She provides few questions that are out of context and the answers in her pre- exam answer keys are not explained!
self-studying. lectures are not fully helpful. Covers easy subjects on her own lectures and asks much more difficult questions on Homeworks and Exams. Need to read the book and even use outside resources like khan academy. You need to spend a lot of time for this class and won't let you to focus on other courses. Would not recommend!
I took her Honors BH class. for some reason it was easy. i am assuming because it was in person. When I took her online econ A class, she wasn't helpful. kind of a dik when teaching online.
your grade for this class is determined by 3 tests, homework and quizzes do nothing to bring your grade up. she grades harshly on the exam and takes points off for no reason. i had an A the whole semester and got a B because I missed the last exam by a few points. i emailed her and asked to discuss with her and she never responded.
Johannsen is a discouraging presence in the classroom. Constant accusations of cheating create a hostile atmosphere. Instead of fostering engagement, she fails to connect with students. The lack of genuine interaction makes the learning experience dull. A regrettable choice for anyone and the course is test-heavy.
Really amazing Economics Professor! She is incredibly nice and very good at explaining concepts, and her class is very interactive. Her grading was a mix of tests, homework, and in class participation. Highly recommend
Professor Johannsen is amazing and you will definitely learn something from her class. Not an easy A, and you got to pay attention to lectures, read textbook, and do homework. If you do all of this, you should not have trouble in her class and will enjoy it quite a bit.
Don't concern yourself with the negative reviews, she's a great professor! Every week there's a discussion and she'll do a problem set w a quiz one week and a case study the next. She creates a schedule to tackle assignments throughout the week so follow that. Exams are MC and a bit challenging, but study ur notes and do ur best!
Honors class had very little homework and no late work penalty, but your grade highly depended on the 3 exams worth about 20% each. Material was mostly covered in lectures and participation is important for your grade. Overall great professor, but you will have to work for an A.
Before taking her I was a little nervous about the negative reviews, but throughout Spring 2024 she was a great/fun professor and seems to have improved over time. During class, she explains concepts as something that can be easily understood and applies humor to make it fun. Outside of class, she can be relatable and personal while giving advice.
I wish I could have taken her class in person but the online class wasn't bad. Lectures are very long to watch. She alternates quiz + problem set, and case study, plus the exams weren't as hard as I expected. I have to say, this class was very manageable because I would only study all the content a week before the exam and still passed with an A.
Lecture slides are condensed, so make sure to find other ways to grasp the content. Class discussion is considered in grading, so make sure to participate. Most of the grade is made up of 3 exams. Kind professor, though grading in the end was scuffed so no students knew their percentage... only the letter grade. Would still recommend though.
Three exam and a project. The way she made her class is in favor of the students. If you do all the HW/ quizzes which is easy to get 100% on cuz they have multiple attempts and if you do all the extra credit she offers then you need to average 83% on the exams to get an A. The extra credits is a separate optional assignment and it's easy!!!!!
You'll find a lot of success on exams and quizzes if you read up on the topics before she covers them in her lecture. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Class also has a discussion-based segment, but she legitimately just wants you to voice your opinion on the articles she assigns. Super chill overall and a great sense of humor!
She was pretty chill, the assignments were super easy. At first, I was worried about the reviews but she was an easy A for me. Not a lot of work, and her assignments are very straight forward.
discussions and homework every week. online office hours and replies quickly to emails
You have to participate in class discussions --- she marks down who is commenting and it is a big part of the grade. Tests are hard and there is option for retake
lectures are boring but helpful. one problem set, where full credit is always given, and one easy quiz per chapter. very lenient grader in general, but also with late work. participation is VERY important, don't skip class. three exams of medium difficulty, you'll do well if you study. opportunity to retake one for max 75%. she's very knowledgeable
Interesting lectures, easy to prepare for the very few tests. Very attainable A.
All lecture slides are posted on Canvas. Don't miss lecture though! The information only makes sense when you go to class. Use ChatGBT to study by asking it to quiz you on the material. You can also use ChatGBT to explain the slides that you have questions on by uploading screenshots. I studied 1-2 hours a day for about one week for each test :)
We were required to have discussions in the beginning of very class based on our readings which she kept track for grade. She gives EC for up to 4%, 3 exams and 6 quizzes. Prepared to the tests by reading the textbook (can be tedious but helpful),do the practice problems, practice tests. Her lectures slides helps a lot too.
great professor! super caring and very understanding. shes a procrastinates on grading which actually gives u some extra time to submit assignments w/o penalty, which she often jokes about exams are easy, lectures are engaging. if u have a lengthy schedule, i'd wait to take this class since the grading depends only on your exams
easy if you study for a bit before the tests and participate a lot. participation is worth quite a lot of points so make sure you get in enough points cause it can really tank your grade. extra credit is really easy at the end of the semester so just do it if you are thinking about it. i never paid attention in lecture and did well so you can too!
