She is very thorough when it comes to note taking. If you go to class you will have all the information you need for the test. Her tests are very fair, you need to do practice problems if you expect to do well. Discussions are helpful if you want it.
She made orgo a bearable class. Although she is very monotone and boring as long as you can find a way to pay attention and go to her office hours you will so fine! She is definately one of the easier organic chemistry professors at boston university- also shes super nervous and awkward
She is the most stuck-up and rude people that I have ever met. She does not reply to emails, she won't even look at you if you talk to her in person, and she ignores your questions and concerns. She also assumes you should know everything that is going on and judges you if you ask for help. She also comes off as mean and cold.
She's very organized with the way she lays out a topic. It's not exciting, but it's easy to learn the material. She sometimes make mistakes in problems she does in class. Office hours are helpful if you have questions on any of the types of problems. Practice tests/practice problems are super helpful &are really similar to her straightforward exams.
She is nice in lecture, yet very reserved and cold in person. Do not expect much help in office hours. You do need to go to lecture to fully understand the material (so you don't have to read the book). Having said that, she gives very straight forward exams that are the same format and material as the practice exam she gives out beforehand.
Makes some mistakes in class/on exam prep materials that can be frustrating. Otherwise, extremely clear and helpful. Office hours were DEFINITELY helpful, and exam prep materials were almost exactly like tests. Very straight-forward and doable if you attend class and study well. I sucked at CH101, but orgo wasn't bad at all.
Worst person ever. Never replies to emails. So stuck up and rude. She expects you to be perfect and know everything. She is not lenient with anything. Avoid her at all costs.
She has a tendency to rush through the material, so her students don't really have time to comprehend it and she expects you to know the basics because she breezes over them. She is helpful in the sense that she provides a lot of practice problems and practice exams, but she isn't great with email and the partial credit on her exams suck.
Honestly, I think she is one of the better orgo profs at BU. She's pretty clear in lecture and her tests are just like the 2 practice tests she puts up. Orgo is such a difficult class though, so if you want a good grade you really have to work for it and do lots of practice problems. Averages on her tests are in the 70s, so don't expect a scale.
Presents information in a logical way and explains concepts thoroughly, which means she sometimes is pressed for the time at the end of lecture. Tests are very similar to the practice tests, problems are not too difficult but there is little partial credit. One of the better organic chemistry professors.
Orgo will be hard regardless of what professor you have, but Loy made it easy to understand and follow. I actually thoroughly enjoyed Orgo and did so much better than in Gen Chem. She's so sweet and def go to OH, she'll love you. As long as you do the practice exams you'll be all set, and sapling and clicker questions are meant to help your grade.
The pre-lab lectures are not at all mandatory for the lab; she puts everything online, even the mechanisms she draws on the board. The lectures never take the full time though. The labs are not graded too harshly, and are very straightforward.
She is great for Pre-Lab, and her lectures are very straight-forward but they are long and boring. She explains the material well, but rushes with practice examples. Never went to office hours because she was very good at explaining the material in class. Her tests are easier than most organic chemistry professors at BU, so I highly recommend her.
Loy cares about the topics she teaches and really tries to help her class understand the material. Most Orgo classes are weed outs, but Loy actually helps your grade whether its curves or her easy clicker questions. Going to office hours definitely and make sure you do her review exams they are a lifesaver.
Easier than the other professors, I've heard, but the class is still a challenge. Willing to help in office hours, but awkward to talk to you. Notes in lecture are legible, but not organized well.
If I had to describe Loy in one word it would be fair. She is very clear about what material is going to be on the exam, and between her office hours, discussion, and TF's office hours, there are plenty of opportunities to get help if you need it. The tests are hard, but compared to chem 101102 they are a walk in the park!
Professor Loy was my favorite teacher!! She is so passionate about organic chemistry. She's all business during lecture and office hours, no joking around, which is actually a very important quality of an orgo teacher.
If you're premed and not really into chemistry, this is the class for you. She makes it digestible enough where an A actually seems possible, which is laudable on her part. If you like chemistry and actually want a depth of understanding on orgo, I wouldn't recommend this class. She stops at the bare bones of what you "need" to know.
She's can seem standoffish, but that's bc she's awkward. She can be condescending in office hours if you ask a question she expects you to know. She is pretty clear during lecture about exams, but I recommend not using the practice exams as a guide -- the only practice exam like the lecture exam was the first one. She'll help you if you ask.
Loy is an incredible teacher - even though she is awkward sometimes, she is very friendly and really wants everyone to do well. Lectures are extremely clear and Loy explains concepts very well. Discussion is very helpful. Practice exams were vital to my doing well in the class - shows what to focus on for studying and how she asks test questions.
Great lecturer and genuinely cares about students. She made me enjoy organic chem.
Loy is actually amazing. Her lectures are so good and you can tell she wants her students to pass. She is engaging even at 8am :) Best chem professor I've ever had. Tests are pretty hard but if you go to discussion and do the packets and practice exams you should be okay.
Dr. Loy was in charge of the lab sections of CH203. She tries to help students with clicker questions during pre-lab lecture, and the labs are on alternate weeks so you have plenty of time to prepare for them.
She's really caring about her students and actually likes what she does. If you go to lecture and review your notes, you will do well on the exam which are pretty easy.
Shes a nice person and really great professor.
Orgo is a tricky class, but Prof. Loy clearly cares a lot about her students and is more than willing to help you if you ask for it. Her lectures are usually pretty easy to follow, although they make a lot more sense if you read the textbook ahead of class! Tests are fair if you're willing to put in the work. Overall, would definitely recommend.
Professor Loy's made orgo easy to understand. Attending lectures is all you need to understand the material. Exams ranged from moderate to hard (the cumulative final!). Often, the material would fairly easy to understand but it is hard to do better than a little above average on the exams. Lots of out-of-class work necessary!
If you're going to take CH203, TAKE REBECCA LOY!!! She is the best!! She is very thorough and will make sure you understand what the heck shes talking about before she moves on. Shes willing to go at a pace thats best for everyone and is always available to help in OH also!! Im telling you, you want to take LOY
Loy is a pretty good professor, usually explains things very well. The only problem is the tests- they're hard, but not hard enough to get a nice curve. The average for the tests is set to 75%, so you have to work to get well above average if you want a good grade. If you're just looking to pass, take loy.
Loy is a very fair teacher and I enjoyed her a lot. Shes a nice person and shows that she cares about her students. Shell release old exams for you to practice and theyll be the exact format and similar questions for your exam. She clearly wants her students to do well and does her best to make it happen
Her class was extremely fair. She earnestly wants every student to do well. Her exams are literally exactly like the practice tests she puts up on Blackboard. First day of class, she mentioned that she would bump you up to the next grade if you were on the borderline, as long as you participate in 90% of TH and get at least half right. Loved her!
I LOVE Dr. Loy. I was super excited for Orgo, and she made the class so enjoyable. She is really funny and she really does care about her students, which makes it easy to be interested in the material she is teaching. She is always available for questions, and answers questions thoroughly in lecture as well. Loy is definitely the best 203 professor
She made organic chemistry easy somehow! If you have to take orgo, make sure you take it with Loy; she is an amazing lecturer, answers questions even when they don't deserve to be answered, and really cares about the learning and success of her students. Only downside is that she doesn't also teach 204!
You can tell she really cares about all of her students, and really wants them to do well. She gives plenty of practice for exams (previous exams, and homework every week), so as long as you are wiling to put the work in, you will do well in class. She explain topics really well, and if you don't get it during lecture just go to her office hours!
While it isn't too difficult to get an average grade in this class, you have to go above and beyond to succeed. The curve is generous, but exams are WAY harder than any material given beforehand.
I LOVE DR. LOY. People have the idea that working hard is not required in her class but it's orgo. She explains concepts well and gives so much practice for exams. As long as you work for it, you will do well!
D. Loy is amazing! She's really warm and supportive during lectures, and she provides SO much practice material, so you're never confused in regards to what's expected of you. She made organic chemistry interesting and understandable, which was an important factor in why I did well.
Dr. Loy is the best professor ever!!! Never want to take another professors class after taking hers.
Dr. Loy is the best, with that being said I can assure you that this professor comes from heaven. She put a great effort in making notes and hand writing them for us which are very clear. She makes hard materials easy to understand and her exam reflect the lecture and whether you pay attention or not. Orgo require studying & practice or you fail.
The only CH204 instructor who truly cares about her students. The lectures are amazing and the homework prepare you well for exams. No other professor is as helpful as her in OH. In all honesty, she puts in more time than some of the students in her class. It is a blessing that she taught 204 this year
Dr. Loy is a great professor and lab coordinator. She lectures to make sure students understand the concepts. She also uses TopHat to ask questions and take attendance. She provides really realistic practice exams to help students prepare. She is a great lab coordinator and makes sure everything from lab and lecture are clearly connected/understood
Dr. Loy is a phenomenal professor. She provides you with all the necessary materials to be successful: practice exams, homework, discussion quizzes, tophat questions. Orgo is hard and requires a lot of time and work, but she makes it interesting and enjoyable. She is really good at explaining topics in lecture. She is super helpful in office hours.
I got lucky enough to have Loy all year for orgo, and I can honestly say that her class is a prime example of the work you put in being reflected in your grade. She gives you all the resources you could possibly ask for; the only way to do poorly is to not use them all.
Very organized and caring. Take her if you want to learn well!! Super grateful that I had her for both semesters.
Whatever I write here won't do her justice. She is a gem the best ever. She inspired me to love Orgo to actually understand every bit of it. she gives us everything we need to succeed and she puts all her knowledge into us which is AMAZING. I would take her every semester if I had a chance to. I am so sad I won't be in her class again. LOVE DR LOY
Loys class for orgo is super clear so you know what to study. It gets a little tough near the end, but she has OH, multiple during study period and finals week to help out. Loys understandable material > rubios curve
Lectures are clear and succinct, always recorded on BlackBoard so attendance not mandatory. Practice tests difficulty mirror real test difficulty. Redo all homework, do previous years homeworks, and do all practice tests. Very helpful in office hours, clear explainer. Homeworks are easier than tests though, so practice test questions are valuable
Amazing, inspiring, brilliant professor. Dr. Loy is caring and genuinely wants students to do their best. Orgo is definitely not an easy subject, but Dr. Loy is great at teaching and she gives helpful, relevant homework and practice problems.
On a surface level, she seems to teach well and care for her students' success. However, when interacting with her in person, she is dismissive, unreasonable, and careless. It was a huge disappointment. My advice: listen to her teach, just don't interact with her personally.
Dr. Loy is possibly the best Orgo professor at BU. She is extremely good at teaching concepts that are otherwise difficult to understand and it's obvious she puts in a lot of work to run a successful class. Orgo is hard no matter who you take it with, but you're best shot at doing well in the class is taking it with her.
my grade is not really reflective of the resources/time loy puts into this class; she def explains topics well, but orgo is a very hard class. she also speeds through lectures at times (usu when she runs out of time towards the end); loy def has a lot on her plate, w all the labs/lec shes in charge of
Organic Chemistry 1 is a tough class period. Regardless of who's teaching, the class will be challenging. However, Dr. Loy teaches to the best of her ability. She explains everything well and always gives students a chance to ask questions at the end of class. She is the safest option out there. You won't regret taking her class for CH203.
Loy is a great orgo professor, she explains concepts well (in lecture and OH). Definitely the safest bet out of all of the orgo professors. I would say her only downside is that she tends to run out of time in her lectures (and prelabs), so she rushes through slides at the end.
This class in general is very heavy, and Loy gives lots of resources to do well in the class. I only regret not putting in more effort with practice problems and attending the 8am lectures. She's always available out of class. My advice is to just take advantage of every resource she gives you.
I took both orgo 1 &2 with her and loved the experience. She's an excellent lecturer, goes slowly and clearly on the materials, gives out a lot of helpful resources, and writes fair exams. She never does curve on grades or give out any forms of extra credits, so you really have to work hard to learn the materials to earn yourself a good grade.
Dr. Loy is a really cares about making sure her student do well. She is very helpful during office hours and doing in-class questions. The class is hard (which is expected for orgo) but she teaches the material effectively.
Professor Loy is a fantastic teacher. She walks you through concepts well but writing notes as she talks. All of her annotated slides are posted which really helps when reviewing a concept you may not understand the first time. She answers questions clearly, super nice. It is a hard class, but that is OCHEM. Pay attention and ask questions.
Had Loy for prelab section of orgo. She was really great and explained the labs clearly. Prelab lecture itself wasn't too helpful but her slides were great to help with lab assignments.
Professor Loy is truly the best professor I have had at BU. She is really nice and very good at explaining organic chemistry. I like her lecture style and it is extremely helpful that she gives us practice exams before each midterm. You will have to study for this class, but Professor Loy is very accessible outside of class.
Prof Loy is an amazing lecturer. She is available outside of class and knows what she is talking about. She has good tips when it comes to acid/base chemistry, mechanisms, or NMR to molecule so make sure to look out for those. Outside of class, she was pretty engaging in OH. Orgo is a hard class so be prepared to study and do a lot of homework.
Dr. Loy is a great lecturer and very available during lecture OH and lab OH if you need help with anything. She really wants to help students understand the material and does a good job explaining such a difficult topic. Grades fairly and seemed kind in every encounter I've had with her. Now in 204, I miss loy and courtney.
she made 204 so much more difficult than it should. impossible lab reports and insanely difficult exams with no curves. also kinda mean in oh. would not recommend
Shes such a sweet and wonderful professor. Very helpful outside of class with questions about lecture or lab. As long as you understand the material, youre given the exam formats beforehand so you know what to expect. (Disclaimer: took her class while LfA was a thing)
honestly she is so overrated. her lectures are the best out of all three professors in ch203 but she doesn't do any lectures for 204. she coordinates the lab and they suck. they do not accommodate students AT ALL and not helpful or caring at all. very dismissive and not as nice as u would think she is. good lectures not good as a person to go to
very condescending in oh. no accommodations. Extremely difficult class with no curve. prelab lectures suck too. she is overrated
Dr. Loy is a very good lecturer for the pre-lab section of orgo. She makes it very easy to learn and often explains new concepts better than the lecture. She is also easily accessible during office hours and is very caring of her students.
Dr. Loy is really awesome for the Orgo chem sequence. She provides tonnes of resources and shes also very accessible out side of class. She replies to emails very quickly too! Orgo chem is hard and you need to work for a good grade but you go to OH and use all the worksheets she provides you can get an A!
I love Dr. Loy. If you have the chance to take her I highly recommend. She goes speak fast but make sure to come to class prepared and you won't get lost. Definitely go to her test reviews as well, they help out so much. She makes orgo fun and understandable
Explains concepts well, both concise and including all the mechanisms you need for exams. She is to the point, and that's appreciated in a tough class like orgo.
Orgo is hard, but Dr. Loy explained concepts very well and gave students many materials to succeed. Her lectures are always the best out of any 204 professor. She's obviously enthusiastic about teaching and cares about her students. Pay attention in lecture and try not to skip, it will help you a ton when it comes to understanding the material.
Orgo 2 with Professor Loy was great this semester. I was intimidated after hearing how difficult CH204 was from previous students, but the way Dr. Loy taught the mechanisms and material this semester made the information easy to understand and keep up with. She explains concepts to the point and genuinely wants the best for her students.
I love professor Loy. She is really passionate about organic chemistry and explains everything extremely well. She is also super helpful during office hours. She is equally as good as Professor Courtney even though she isn't as hyped up as her. She is the reason I am doing so much better in Orgo than I was in Gen Chem.
Honestly, Dr. Loy is probably one of the best teachers for orgo you'll ever come across. She's the type of person who struggled with the common hardships most experience in the class, so she'll teach you the tricks she uses to do well on the exams. I found all of the tests very fair as well. They won't put anything on them that hasn't been covered.

Everyone says Courtney is the best but I loved Loy. She is very clear in lecture and will go over things repeatedly until students understand. Explains concepts really really well. She's super accessable outside of class and is very fast when responding to emails.
Loy is an amazing professor and extremely knowledgeable. Go to office hours!
Had her for Pre-lab for CH204 orgo II. Lecture is always clear and she is so helpful during her office hours. Such a kind person!
Dr. Loy is by far the best lecturer for CH204. She didn't teach lecture for 204 this semester, but I watched all of hers from the year before. She explains the concepts perfectly, provides students with everything they need for the exams, and she is very kind if you need to talk to her. Take her for CH204.
Loy is very amazing for the lab section. She sometimes teaches ahead of the lecture but she still explains us very well. The lab section is very interesting. For 212, we did a capstone project in a very inspirational branch of organic chemistry. I would recommend taking her again. I know that she is teaching both lectures and labs. So go ahead.
ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL!!!! I had the privilege of having Dr. Loy for CH203 lecture and 214 lab and she is AMAZING! I wish I could have also had her for 214 lecture! Her lectures are extremely clear and straight-to-the- point, and she thoughtfully answers questions. She is super accessible outside of class, and genuinely wants you to succeed.
You want this professor for organic chemistry. Fun, exciting, and caring. That's all there is to it.
Dr. Loy was awesome. Taught orgo so clearly and so well, and overall made it a much easier class than I anticipated. Super clear lectures, and she is very clear about what she will expect on homework and exams. Her offices hours are great as well, and she is always willing to help when you need it
Everyone who takes ochem is grateful for her (including those in different sections who just watch her recording). She teaches a very hard topic in a very palatable way. The course is hard, the exams are hard, but if you don't procrastinate, pay attention, and work hard, you can do very well. She is very kind and intelligent.
Dr. Loy is my favorite professor at BU, it's very clear that she is passionate about organic chemistry and that she knows a whole lot about it. Practice exams are a lot like the real thing, so there weren't any crazy curve balls. Very engaged in lecture and gives really detailed and helpful answers for any questions asked.
